FatherCrowewasanexemplary priest,acharmingpersonality,agreat sportsman,andtheleadingspiritin manyRockleydistrictmovements.He wasonly35yearsold,beingordained in1913,afterabrilliantscholasticcareer.Hewasoneofthemostbrilliantstudentsandathletesofhistime atSt.Joseph's,Hunter'sHill,whereas captainofthefirsteleven,heledhis teamtovictoryinalongseriesofsuccesses.Hewasthenafirst-classwicketkeeper,forwhomcriticsprophesied abrilliantfuture.

Stillinanebulouscondition,andstillagitatingthepublicmindinIre- landandEngland(thoughtheBritishColonialOfficewillnotadmitthatit islosinganysleepoverthematter),theIrishboundaryquestioncontinues toprovidehardnutstobecrackedsomehow,andperhapsunpleasantlyfor manyhot-headedandalsothick-headedagitators.Theappointmentofa TransvaaljudgeasPresidentoftheBoundaryCommissionissuggestiveofa definitemovebeingmadethismonthornexttoendthetensionbetween NorthernandSouthernIrelandcreatedbythevexedquestionofboundary rights.Thefuturepeaceofthecountryrestsuponajustandequitableset- tlement,andiftheTransvaalJudgecanremovetheIrishPerilhewillbe worthyofthebestthanksofIrishpeopleathomeandabroad,but-wewill leaveitatthatandhopeforthebest.
CablesfurnishpeopleinthiscountrywholooktoBritainforlightandlead- ing,andwhoswearbythewisdomoftheImperialLegislature,withmuch foodforthought.ThechaoticstateofpartypoliticsinBritainispainfully emphasisedbytheabsurdattitudeoftheLiberalsin,forcingtheGovernment intohumiliatingpositions,andagainrushingtoextricatetheMinistryfrom anabsolutedefeat.ThetimeisnotremotewhentheDominionswillbe forcedtoreconsidertheirpositioninregardtotheMotherland,andwhenthe latterwillbecompelledtocallforththeirbestintelligencetohelpthe statesmenofBritaininthedirectionofImperialaffairs.Thefoolish'squab- blingforascendancywhichmarksthecontestsbetweentheConservatives andtheLiberals,andbetweenthelatterandLabourfortheTreasurybets ches,notonlyembarrassesthepubliclifeofthenation,butisadistinct menacetoBritishprestigeabroad.ThesenseoftheLabourGovernmentis notallowedtomanifestitselfonlybythewhimsicalwishesoftheLib. erals,anditseemstheyaremerelyplayingwiththeLabourGovernmentas thecatdoeswithacapturedmouse.Suchmiserablepoliticaljugglingitwas thatbroughtabouttheadventofFacisminItaly. o TheoilscandalsandtheKu-KluxKlandominatethePresidentialtournayinAmerica.UsuallytheelectionofanAmericanPresidentfurnishes excitingfeatures,butnotformanyyearshastheAmericancitizenhada morepurpletimethanjustnowwhenallthevenom,spleenandmadnessof opposingpoliticsinviciousgripsarestrugglingoneagainsttheotherlike maggotsinafilthyvasetogetabovetheother.Maskedpatriotism,oozing sectarianism,slander,andmortalsinsyelpsorsnortsattheheelsofthetwo greatparties,DemocratsandRepublicans,andboth,whilstprofessingtheir dislikeanddisgustofKu-Kluxism,areafraidtoopenlydenounceit.So muchforthesacrednessofthatDeclarationofIndependenceuponwhich thelltertiesofAmericancitizenshiprests.
nurFederalGovernment,whenitisnotthumbingaccountsforEurspeanjoyrides,seemstohavescrupleswhenitiscalledupontorecognise otherclaims.WeallrememberhowgallantlyitsexpertsduringtheRinder- pesttroublemetthesituationanddestroyedthefortunesofmanyofour strugglingcitizens.NowthisgallantandgenerousGovernment,whichdoes notscrupletospendlargesumsofthepublicmoneyontripstoTimbuctoo anr!elsewhereon"affairsofState,"refusestoindemnifyherffsmoninthis State,andothers,who.throughthecampaignaaginstrinderpestsufferedruin-
ouslosses.Itisourbusiness,theFederalauthoritiestellus,and,whilstit pincheseverycopperofrevenueitmaygatherfromus,itplainlytellsusWe mustpayforitsnastywork.Well.ifthecitizensofthisStatetakethisin- dignitylyingdown,theydeservealltheygetofalikecharacterfromthe FederalGovernment.
Finebitofnewsinthecables.TheIrishFreeStateandTurkeyareat peacewitheachother,andtheDail,withoutadivision,ratifiedtheLausanne. Treaty.Wehaven'treadthatKemilPashahasembracedanauthentic IrishFreeStateAmbassadorsofar.NorhavewereadthattheDailhaspsotestedagainsttheforcedclosingoftheChristianschoolsbytheAngora Government.WhenaChristian\StateandaMoslemStatecanbeatpeace onaquestiohthatvitallyconcernsthewelfareoftheMoslem'sChristiansti'o jects,thereisroomforspeculationastowhatisbehindsuchfraternising. SteelytheTurkisnottakingreligiousinstructionfromtheIrishFreeState. Thatwouldbeawonderfuladvanceinmodernprogress.
.4 America'sMenace JustnowtheDemocraticPartyinAmericaareholdingaConventionto selectacandidatetorunagainstPresidentCoolidgeforthePresidencyuf America.Itisinterestingandilluminatingtheamountofenergyandpas- sionatefeelingimportedintothedeliberationsoftheConvention,andhow certainpoliticalinterestsandprejudicesswaythefollowersoftherespec tivecandidatesforselection.Agreatpoliticalpartyintheselectionof theplanksofitsplatformhasbeencontrolledbyanorganisationwhichopenlydeclaresitselftheenemyofavastbodyofAmericancitizenship,andthe opponentofthoseprinciplesofindividualfreedomwhicharewritteninto thathistoricDeclarationofIndependencewhichloyalAmericansproudly boastastheircharteroffreedom,anduponwhichtheConstitutionofthe Republicrests.Aluridlightisthrownuponthepoliticalscreen,andmasked andsheetedadventurersprojectthemselvesuponthecanvasandplaysuch fantasticpartsinthecontroversythatonewonderswhetherLibertyisreally authenticintheAmericanConstitution,thatitissupportedbylaw,and thatithasthefullweightofallthepowersofGovernmenttosupportandto assistit,andthatitissomethingmorethananabstractideal.Inthe strifeandstruggleoftheconflictforascendancy,politicalpartieschoseplat formsthatarelikelytoconformtopublicdesireandarebestforthepublic good.Inthearrangingofthe50ormoreplankssubmittedtotheDems craticConvention,theewasonewhichwasoflittlepoliticalsignificance,bat .ehichraisedastormofangryprotestwhenitwassuggested.Itseemed tohaveletlooseapackofhowlingjackals,andpassionswererousedtoan extraordinarypitchofexcitement,somuchsothatthemanagersoftheCooventiondecidednottodiscussitinthepresenceofcrowdedgalleriesthrough fearofriotsandpossiblebloodshed.IIerewegetapurpleindicationofhow sinisteristheinfluenceofthatviciousorganisationwhichtindercoverof Americanpatriotismposturesastheguardian.ofAmericanFreedom.TheKu KluxKlanappearsuponthestageofAmericanpoliticsasanimperiousdi... tatorandtheexponentofanewbrandofAmericanism.Itsprogrammeis notorious.ItspolicyisopposedtotheprinciplesofWashington,Jefferson. Lincoln,andthemastermenwhohaveshapedAmericanjurisprudence.It isareversionofthespiritoftheAmericanConstitution,whichaccordstothehumblestAmericancitizenthesamerightsandprivilegeswhichisa:cordedtothePresident.ItisthenegationofthetoleranceoftheUnmortas. framersoftheGreatCharterofAmericanLiberty,becauseitimpudently. audaciously,andarrogantlyassumestoitselftherighttoreclassifytheAmeri- canpeopleandtoimposealimittocitizenuchipundertheStarsandStripes. "Allmenareequal,"itrepudiatesasanon.essential.anditwouldeliminate itfromtheConstitution.Theseself-dabbed100-percentersareattempting tocreateintheRepublicaprivilegedcasteandnewstandardsofeducatistt whichwouldchangethecurrentofAmericantoleranceandthecourse Americanprogress.
UntilalittlewhileagotheKlansmenwereregardedbyAmericanstar_ menasharmlessmasqueradersofnopoliticalinfluence.Divisionsandjealousiesweresupposedtohavedisruptedtheorganisation,butthesecret_hasleak edout,thattheKlanisagreatermenacethanwasimagined,andtheDemocratsarenotblindtoitsinfluenceasanopponent.Itisafraidtoopenly defyitsopposition:itmeanlyhopes,whilstdeclaringitsfidelitytotheAmeiS- candemocracy,togetitssupportinthefightforthePresidency.Eventhe sturdyWilliamJenningsBryanisnotreadytochallengetheenemywithir. theirgates;hesays,"WeshouldrighttheRepublicanPartyandnotth Klan,"andpresumablyhecourtsthesupportoftheKlan.Iletolerates.: astheDemocratstolerateitforpurposesofpoliticalexpediency.Byone votemorethanhalftheparty,itwouldseem,areopposedtonamingthi- treacherousorganisationinitsplatformfromfearofspoilingthechance thepartyattheelections.Forthewhilethisintolerantorganisation,with itsflamingcrosses,itsmidnightraids,anditsmischievousinterference publicaffairswillcontinuetoprosecuteitsdetestablemethodsofintimida tionanditsdisgustingintolerance
Ontheotherhandthereisshownthat,howeverevenlydividedthebe mocratsareonawhatafterallismerelyaquestionofpolicy,thevotingfor Governor-Smith,whoisaCatholiccandidateisnotcloudedbynauseousand ignoblebigotry.Itseemstobeafaircontestbetweenthetwoprincipal figuresinthecontestforselection.AndthoughforthemomenttheKlans. menmaysucceedinbrowbeatingtheDemocrats,itishardtobringoneself tobelievethattheopen,impartialmindofAmericanDemocracywillsur- rendertotheprejudiceandwickedintoleranceofanorganisationthatwilt stopatnothingtoachieveitsun-Americanobjective.Organisations.,evenas individuals,canrunamok,andforalongwhilepast,theKuKluxKlanhas beenafflictedbyamentaldiseasewhichshouldcauseittocomeunderthe closestobservationoftheauthoritieswhoseprovinceitistotestthementallyunhingedandthedesperationofdesperadoes.Thismadorganisationha., setitselfupinbusinessasaregeneratorofAmericancitizenship.Itaims atamendingtheConstitution;itisfeverishlyattemptingtogetastrong pullonAmericanpolitics,andithopestostemtheprogressoftheCatholic ChurchinAmerica.ByforceandviolenceitmenacesAmericancitizens,and bytheexerciseofoutrageousintimidationandintoleranceithascontr.* tocreateanatmosphereoffearandsuspicioninnearlyeveryStateof Union.OstensiblyitaimsatpromotingAmericanideals,butitsoneobject istoblocktheprogressoftheCatholicChurchintheUnitedStates.That wethinkisaforlornhope.TheKnowNothingmenacefailedtoachievethat object,andinitsdayitwasnotlessviciousanddangeronsthanitssuccessor theK.K.K.ItisstrangethatwithallthefreedomofAmerica.Catholics havehadtocontendwithsomeseriousdisabilities,yet,withal,inthelastIin- dredyearstheyhaveincreasedfromatotalofabout240,000inapopulation ofnineandahalfmillionsin1820(ornotquiteoneinevery37oftheAmeri- canpeople),tomorethan.20millionsinapopulationof105millionsin1928, ornearlyoneinfive.Suchprogressinthefaceofmanyuglyattemptsbyintolerantorganisations'tohamperandharrassitsenergies,whilstannoyingto itsenemies,ismostencouragingtoitsleaders,andanevidenceofitsmai worthasacolonitingagent.Allthingshumanhaveanending,andKu Marin.'willendignominiously.Nothingverybadlastsverylong.
