Archbishop Hoban High School

Built on a promise to empower the heart and mind, Archbishop Hoban High School provides an education grounded in faith, service and innovation. With an inclusive, family-oriented environment, you will receive an education that turns the smallest spark of passion into a lifetime of thriving, anywhere.

THE MISSION

We are a Catholic High School in the Holy Cross tradition. We celebrate our diversity, value each person, and welcome one another with the hospitality of Christ.

As a family of learners, anchored in gospel values, we empower each other to grow spiritually, develop intellectually and reach out in service to others.

Within an innovative and orderly learning environment, we are committed to challenging each student in both heart and mind to be a compassionate individual, a lifelong learner and a responsible steward of God's creation.

“The quality which defines the students of a Holy Cross education heritage is the training of the hearts as well as the minds."

Reliance on Divine Providence. Excellence. Cultivation of the Heart as Well as The Mind. Inclusiveness. Discipline. Option for the Poor. Hope. Family. Integrity. Zeal.

Hoban

Holy Cross Values

Hoban is sponsored by the Brothers of Holy Cross, the first order of teaching brothers established in the United States. The Holy Cross educational tradition in this country dates from the founding of the University of Notre Dame in 1842.

“Academic

centers are the pinnacle of student-directed learning. With the added workload and time commitment comes a level of autonomy in their learning that is not typical in high school classroom settings.”

SIGNATURE ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

ACADEMIC SUCCESS CENTER

The Academic Success Center (ASC) is an integral resource within Hoban, offering essential support services to a wide range of students. As a comprehensive center, the ASC provides executive functioning assistance, subject-specific tutoring and intervention services.

Subject tutoring is available to all Hoban students, with flexible options to schedule sessions before or after school or during study hall, through the ASC app on their school-issued iPad. Additionally, the Center is staffed by dedicated intervention specialists who provide targeted support for students participating in the Jon Peterson Scholarship Program. The ASC also manages accommodated testing for students with IEP or accommodation plans, ensuring that all learners have the tools they need to succeed academically.

ACADEMIC CENTERS

Hoban offers five academic centers to provide students with specialized learning. Academic centers are open to students during junior and senior year and provide opportunities to explore topics of interest and examine ideas and concepts. Each center includes a culminating presentation or project in which students present new knowledge or a synthesis of current information. Students can choose to explore topics in the following areas:

Sustainability

International Politics

Exercise Science

Fine Arts

Independent Research in Social Studies

VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS

The new CREATE Studios houses Hoban’s 16 visual art courses offered to students of all skill levels. Year after year, students produce outstanding works of art that are recognized locally, regionally and nationally. With the addition of CREATE Studios, students receive hands-on instruction in a state-of-the-art facility that allows them to explore the arts and express themselves as growing artists with arms-length access to professionals.

Hoban’s theatre and music program enriches the cultural experience of all students. The theatre program performs two theatre productions each year–the fall play and spring musical.

Choir and steel drum band are elective course options for students of all musical experience. Beginning, intermediate and advanced steel drum classes ensure any student is able to participate and learn correct performance technique.

ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Hoban runs on a block schedule in which students have all seven periods on Monday (Silver Days), periods one through four on Tuesdays and Thursdays (Blue Days) and periods five through seven on Wednesdays and Fridays (Gold Days). This schedule allows for an enrichment period on Gold Days. Enrichment is typically divided into two smaller blocks to allow all students to participate in dynamic experiences that support academic growth and social and emotional wellness.

During the first part of enrichment, all students and educators in the building engage in an academic-focused period to allow for meetings between students and teachers for academic support, completion of makeup assignments or simply use it as a built-in study hall. During the second part of the block, Hoban's educators plan various activities based on student feedback and teachers' passions and interests. The activities range from card games, guitar club, cooking lessons, kickball, crocheting and everything in between. This time can also be used for meeting times for our student-centered clubs and organizations to alleviate the scheduling conflicts of before and after-school activities. Enrichment provides students with the opportunity to spend time with peers and Holy Cross educators, take a mental break from rigorous coursework and learn new hobbies and activities.

“The concept of play is often lost in today’s society. I believe these non-traditional activities have strengthened the students’ academic achievements. We have to have balance in our life, and I believe students will be stronger in the next class after having time to decompress.”

Currently, Hoban partners with Walsh University, Kent State University, the University of Mount Union and Stark State College.

Hoban welcomes a diverse community of learners who are ready to ignite their future. Each student enters with unique abilities, gifts and challenges to overcome. As Holy Cross educators, we help each student light their path, pursue it with blazing zeal and stay true to who they are.

FAITH FORMATION

Campus Ministry provides faith formation and support to students of all religious backgrounds as a way to nurture and fuel their faith beyond the classroom setting.

Students can become involved in Campus Ministry by joining a leadership team to help plan various faith-based activities. The Office of Campus Ministry and Mission Effectiveness serves three major functions—liturgy, retreats and Christian service—to complement the theology curriculum.

The Courage to Serve.

Christian service empowers students to be faithful to our Holy Cross tradition, which calls us to “have the competence to see and the courage to act.”

RETREATS AND DAYS OF REFLECTION

Campus Ministry and the theology department offer retreat programs for all grade levels.

Retreats offer students a break from the stress and noise of the world. Prayer, community and fun are blended throughout the day for an engaging and meaningful spiritual experience. to help students create an experience that is true to them. In addition to the required annual class days of reflection, optional retreats are available.

Spes Unica Retreats

Offered three times a year, these optional, student-led weekend retreats are offered to juniors and seniors and are some of the most important and meaningful activities Hoban students experience.

Holy

Cross Conference for Student Leaders

The Holy Cross Conference for Student Leaders at Holy Cross College, Notre Dame, IN., is an opportunity for students to learn about our Holy Cross history, meet students from other Holy Cross schools and take time to pray and reflect.

LITURGY

As a Catholic high school, the entire school family gathers for Mass at key times of the year.

Morning Mass is celebrated every week and is open to all students and Holy Cross educators. Prayer services are held throughout the year. Students are encouraged to be involved in Christian Ministry by serving as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and leading the school in daily prayer.

Christian service empowers students to be faithful to our Holy Cross tradition, which calls us to “have the competence to see and the courage to act.”

CHRISTIAN SERVICE

Hoban offers a multitude of service opportunities, facilitating effortless engagement in community oriented activities for those looking to contribute and give back, including:

THE Courage

TO FORGE YOUR

Future.

“Hoban has helped me branch out and meet amazing people and has allowed me to work on personal growth with exceptional teachers who spark my curiosity. I have learned countless life lessons outside of the classroom through their mentorship. Hoban’s Holy Cross educators’ kindness, empathy and generosity have helped shape me. I appreciate the opportunities and community surrounding me. "

As One. ON THIS ROCK WE STAND

The Hoban community beautifully embodies Northern Ohio. For students concerned about not knowing many people, they quickly discover they are not alone. Our school culture thrives on diversity and the fusion of different backgrounds. Here, students are encouraged to embrace their true selves, learn from each other and grow into the person God calls them to be.
