Deema Abouelenein Architecture Student

Architecture is not just a form of art, it is having an image or a vision that is combined between science and art and integrating all skills to create something that deserves people to stop and look at the beauty and the challenging facade. This Course is allowing me to make my dream come true, by learning new strategies and new techniques that allow me to create something that could be un ique to me and to others.

Architecture is one of the most challenginng majors in my opinion. It allows you to dream big yet be able to learn techniques and design methods that could allow to make these dreams a reality. My interest for Architecture has grown ever since I was in High School. I remember watching architecture documentaries and real state shows where they bought houses, renovated them and sold them later. I also spent so much time looking at interior homes and unique exterior facades that made me want to know how can a person create such unique buildings. Architecture is so challenging as there is always new technologies, new construction methods and new applications that allow any talented architect to expand and to develop new skills and creating something that is unique and challenging. Storybook

The thing that makes an Archihtect more uniquw and powerful than another, is that all architects are given the tools to use and to develop to create something majistic, but here comes the true talent and skills that are merged with the technologies that allow a skilled architect to create something worth the hype. My vision is to create something that adds to a certain place and to the people, a building that speaks for itself.

Phase 1

Materials: - Gypsum - Water - Cup - Towel

Human Hands

Steps: - Mixed the gypsum with water - Placed the mixture in the gloves - Tied the gloves together and placed it on a flipped bowl to take its shape.

Classical Vase Steps: - Mixed the gypsum with water - Placed the fabric in the mixture - Placed the fabric over a cup and began to shape it

Storybook

9

In this project submission, we were asked to experiement with gypsum and come up with an object that is well put together and that has a stable ratio between the gypsum and water and that would not break. In this experiement it was a trial and error sort of experience where we had to try any material desired and come up with ways to create an object that is structurally stable. I experiemented with gloves and with a piece of cloth. My first sample which is with the cloth was a successful expirement since the cloth and the gypsum were stable and dried well and the ratio was fine so i had a stable, successful model. However, The cup under the cloth was stuck to the cloth so i couldn’t disconnect them from each other. My second sample which is with the gloves was not a successful trail since the fingers cracked and this was due to the fact that that the ratio of the mixture wasn’t well. I intended on creating a model that was held by the fingers but it couldn’t stand still.

Phase 2

Materials: - Gypsum - Water - Cups - Foil Steps: - Mixed the Gypsum with Water and added colors, then added the foil in the mixture. - Placed 2 cups then placed the foil shits on top of the cup, trying to create solid and void structure. - After I left it to dry, I began to see where it was able to hold itself in place or not.

In this phase, I was developing from last time and i wanted to expirement with new materials. I began to think of a structure that is supported on ends and other parts that are flying. The flying part is supported with two cups that have different heights and different radiuses. I created extrusions and intrusions that were created by crumbling the foil into different shapes. The problem that came in the way was that the foil became too weak and the structure was weak due to the use of material.

Storybook

11

Phase 3

Steps: - Mixed the Gypsum with Water. Cut shapes in the fabric then added the fabric into the mixture. - Placed 3 cups (different radiuses) in the desired way and placed the fabric on top of it. Added more gypsum in areas for better structure. - Using my fingers, I began to extrude sides and to shape the structure randomly, leaving places resting on a surface and other parts flying. - After I left it to dry, I removed the cups and checked that the structure was stable and firm.

Materials: - Gypsum - Water - Cups - Cloth

14

Phase 2 Evolution of Snakes: Over the years, snakes evolved into many shapes and sizes with many different colors, depending on the living environments.

Site ( SSE Pathway): The location of the site is infront of the SSE hallway. This hallway is near the SU market and is the main entrance to the SSE building. This hallway breaks down into many hallways which make it one of the most uniqye hallways yet the busiest hallway in the university. SSE building is in the center of the university and this hallway is one of the most known hallways in AUC. This project is to create a structure that is 3x2x2 meters set to be placed in the center of the SSE hallway.

15 Concept: A passage way that has an intense structural system that allows people to see the technology behind SSE. This project has two surfaces, one of them is inspired by the snake’s skin texture and the other surface is the structure that carries everything together.

Steps: - 3 curves - Rebuilt each curve - Loft on rhino to check that the curve is fine - Deleted the loft to create it on grasshopper - Setting the radius for the pipe - Offsets

Phase 1: Double Skin Facades: Affordness

High Cost (Construction)

Facade Protection

Comfortable Environment

In this project, the objective is to explore and parametrically generate a prototype for a building façade skin that takes into consideration issues of environmental comfort, spatial relations and human aspects using a passive approach.

ARCH 473/3522 - Fall 2021

Deema Abouelenein

18 Site Analysis: - The main facade has glass facades - Orientations: S,W,SW - No self shading elements - Self exposed building

Easy Solutions: Noise insulation since the building is in one of the most busiest streets in New Cairo. Vegetation for air quality improvements. Facades that improves privacy.

Wind is not blocked due to the empty parking area behind the building.

Environmental Analysis:

Wind from N (Primary) Wind from NW (Secondary)

Required self shading, natural ventilation, dehumidifications

Hottest facades: SE to W (very high temperature)

Due to the high sun exposure, we can conclude that there is a high solar radiation as well i the southern facade, whihc will cause the building to have high temperatures inside the building which will lead to a non-friendly working environment. This will also result in high costs of air conditioning Storybook

19 Conceptual Idea: A pattern that will change along with the sun’s angles and orientations. Patterns with openings in them will differ according to the amount of sun there is. The openings would be bigger in places that receive less sunligh and would be smaller in places that receive a vast amount of sunlight. South: - High sun angle

The grey curved line represents the extrusions and intrusions that will happen in the facade.

Intrusions: -S Extrusions: -W

West: -Lower sun angle

Desired Design: - Triangular parametric shapes with small openings in S (horizontally) - Triangular parametric shapes with big openings in W (vertically)
