It gives me a great pleasure to welcome you to the College of Architecture and Design. The College of Architecture and Design is a new addition to the reputable colleges at Prince Sultan University. Although the college is established recently, the interior design program was established in 2003 under the College of Women back then. The Architecture program was established in 2011 under the College of Engineering. Due to the growth in number of students and staff, the College of Architecture and Design is established to house the current and future programs.

The Architecture and Design has distinguished faculty members recruited to deliver state of the art and contemporary subject and cutting edge technologies. The diverse faculty members in the college bring different and wide prospective to architecture and design fields.

The curriculum of Architecture and Interior Design programs consists of 138 credits hours and awarding the Bachelor of Science degree in their respected field.

As part of PSU commitments to “Excellence in Higher Education”, the curriculum of the college’s programs were design in accordance to the international standard and benchmarked to hallmark universities. The university is committed to internationalize the program and allow students to enroll in study abroad program to enhance student experience.

PSU has equipped the college with state of the art computer and fabrication labs to promote the student journey throughout their studies. Due to the nature of the architecture and design programs, the university has established the Fabrication Laboratory (Fab Lab) in which students develop hands on training in model making. Students are trained to design and 3D printing for their study need.

PSU is focus on increasing the exposure of its students and participate in local and international competitions The college pays great interest in serving the community as part of its mission. College’s programs participate with the community by conducting scientific research and applied projects. Community activities aim in serving the public with solutions that meet their ambitions and desire. As part of continuous life learning, the college invites prominent academics and practitioners to deliver public presentations and hold specialized workshops. Final exam committees are usually include practitioners from the field to have their evaluation and input regarding the design projects.

DEAN'S MESSAGE

The Architectural program at PSU was established in 2011 and got the NCAAA full accreditation until 2027. Currently, the program is undergoing a major review that will allow us to complete the process for the NAAB International Certificate. At PSU we estimate academic excellence and the diversity within our community. Faculty, staff and students are coming from more than twelve different nationalities. The learning process is enriched by engaging with people of diverse cultures.

Today the dimension of any environmental issue — rapid urbanization; infrastructural systems; the disparity of resources; climatic conditions; material performance; etc — requires solutions that have to be local and global, pragmatic yet evocative. If we want a better present, we have to discover the moment where tradition turns into innovation.

The program is fully committed to supporting the Saudi Vision 2030 and the UN sustainable goals. The Architecture program at PSU offers a solid preparation based on the combination of disciplines — architecture, urban planning, technology, history and theory, digital fabrication applied in our studio-based courses. Students enrolled in the Architecture BSC can benefit from a variety of facilities among which the Fabrication Lab can offer the latest technology in terms of digital fabrication and model making.

Moreover, students are involved in several formative activities in and out of the classroom: field trips, lectures, workshops, community service, students clubs.

Arch students benefit from a seven-month internship and, in the majority of cases, they receive a job offer at the end of the training period.

We educate future citizens not only architects.

PROGRAM VISION The CAD program prepares the students to contribute significantly and creatively to the profession of architecture and the advancement of the community, culture, and environment.

PROGRAM MISSION The mission of the Architectural Engineering Program at PSU is to provide our students with high quality education that meets international standards. This is achieved through enriching their knowledge, motivating them to researchoriented lifelong learning, enhancing their critical thinking, and applying modern technologies in their courses. Our team of qualified faculty aims at preparing students to lead a successful career in the professional field, encouraging them to create Architectural Engineering that develops their environment and community, and boosting up their social responsibility, involvement of sustainable designing, and building for the future.

MULUCIRRUC MARGORP

The Department of Architecture offers a comprehensive program that fosters creativity, innovation, informed problems-solving skills and cultivation of human needs as individuals and community. This is achieved in parallel to incorporating cultural and traditional considerations in the curriculum.

The program requires 4 years in addition to the foundation year: PYP. It includes a 7-month professional training as a CO-OP program to prepare our students for the professional practice inside and outside KSA. As our students develop autonomous lifelong learning competencies, they are supported to develop their personal and professional capabilities as well as their responsibility to improve their communities.

Our learning outcomes are accomplished by a group of highly qualified faculty members with a rich variety of academic backgrounds.

Our graduates are prepared to serve as qualified professionals and leaders in the fields of Architecture, Urban Design, Landscape Design, Graphic Presentation, Software Application as well as Model-Making. They are also prepared to pursue their graduate studies in Architecture or related fields.

The College of Architecture and Design takes into account the needs of the local community for university-educated professional architects.

PROGRAM CURRICULUM Additionally, the program has completed the NCAAA national accreditation process and is going for international accreditation. The program joined the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) in 2019 and is working to have the international certification under the umbrella of the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) requirements.

Starting from January 2020 arch students can enrich their study plan with an Interior Design minor. The Architecture Program graduates have the necessary professional skills to embark on successful careers in the industry and/or pursue higher education in Architecture and related disciplines.

Credits: 3(1,0,5) The course introduces the basic principles of order using 2D and 3D compositions of basic design elements. Space explorations through movement and circulation are established. Additional emphases are given to color theory, textures and tones. Class assignments are based on abstract concepts while acquainting students with different media and presentation techniques.

PRESSURE PASSAGE The passage symbolizes one's journey throughout a life full of success and achievements with its ups and downs.

Step by step walking by its obstacles and crossing its risks while, being pressured to give up and never try again. The passage's confinement stage is articulated to be risky and unstable.

It consists of an uneven stairs with different hight and width. Also, to add more risks or obstacles to one's journey, there are unlimited random sticks hanging down from the ceiling as swords waiting to hunt down one's conference, strength and faith.

However, the release stages are meant to be less risky with an empty space on the top. They stand for the stations of one's journey in life when achieving one goal and just before they go through another journey of achieving a new aim or dream.

This design identifies the strength that will take in order to come over the obstacles and challenges in life.

Once a person enters and goes up the first staircase, the feeling of confinement hits them up, because it begins with very long sticks, just like every other first step in life.

Also, the more this person goes up and reaches to the 7th staircase, the sticks decrease in size, and the first release phase out of two is reached. Once they reach the 12th case, the second confinement is reached, and it keeps on repeating for one more release, and ends in confinement at the top of the stairs, and then it goes on and on with every step to a successful life journey

The Ney is a wooden and Wind instrument. It is one of the ancient instruments that human made from jungle reeds.

I was inspired by the idea of depth in the Ney Flute instrument to create a building to be linearly arranged in addition to the height of the building's ceiling.

This depth makes the Visitor feel great. The building consists of two parts.

The large part is for the public, the small part is for visitors‘ service.

WU WO TEA PAVILION Project Description: The structural system was created based on one column and four balanced beams. Linear wide depth stairs to enter the space with symmetrical connected rectangular that has two seats for four people and kitchen bar behind the door decoration.

The linear entrance finished with Chinese ornamented door to show the identity of the pavilion and sperate the guest area from the workers area.

Ceiling structure is to make it more stable, simple and structure to add shelter.

The pavilion should conned the land with a relatively deep water body to help the body reach the balanced temperature and for the ear to hear water movement and for the eye to enjoy the view to reach the perfect balanced state while drinking tea.

Concept: Wu Wo is a name of a Chinese tea festival, and the concept was derived of the meaning of (Wu Wo): effort less action and the concept behind it is that the state of perfect and balanced knowledge of the reality of the situation, perfect efficaciousness and the realization of a perfect economy of energy.

Linearity and symmetry are used to create the balance appearance and experience.

The design for this structure emerged from the need to create a space that serves to celebrate artists and their work by functioning as a display gallery and the general public with a space to relax, recreate and enjoy.

The structure was designed to capture the interest of an observer by the repetition of forms that are the dimensional transformation of a single parent form integrating balance and harmony while creating a variation and drama due to different heights and distance employed between each solid; thereby creating unity.

The location of the pavilion allows for a design that capitalizes on the pleasant weather and natural lighting to create a user experience that is innovative and dynamic.

The space has provision for a shaded seating spaces, viewing platforms, restrooms and benches. The presence of greenery bestows a sense of refreshment and peace while the main form itself represents innovation and integrity paying homage to time and evolution.

The design considered human scale, ADA standards, inclusive design, circulation and lighting to create a unique and worthwhile experience filled meaningful moments for users with the widest possible range of ideas and capacities

FLOATING YOGA

Floating yoga, is an increasingly popular fitness activity. As with regular yoga, floating yoga utilizes the principles of balance, strength, flexibility, and meditation by taking the practice of yoga beyond the mat, which then engage the senses with all of the elements, and challenge the stability to grow and strengthen, and bringing the body into true balance and alignment. This could be taken by exercising and moving on the water, which is 10 times harder and unparalleled by anything on land.

Thich Thien emphasize on letting the mind flow like water. The practice of floating yoga allows guests to embrace the benefit of yoga communing with nature in a fresh and engaging way, while also participating in an invigorating and unique workout by constantly finding balance on the moving water.

The idea behind the building that it makes a person feels that he/she is floating above water. It either as a stand-up paddleboard yoga on the water or a glass cabinet that the water runs underneath. The cabinet is fully transparent in which it allows the yogi to experience all the surrounding views, and be engaged with the nature that circle him/her. As Tadao Ando once said “I don’t believe architecture has to speak too much. It should remain silent and let nature in the guise of sunlight and wind.”

This workshop aims to analyzing some successful contemporary projects which express the adaptation with the Islamic Architecture concepts, environmental treatments and Islamic ornaments in creative contemporary way using modern technology. To emphasize the importance of achieving compatibility with environmental conditions to develop a new Architectural Language based on combining Islamic architecture and contemporary architecture in creative forms.

Our present and future mainly derive from our past, which is why studying yesterday’s heritage helps build a stronger present and brighter future. In this regard, our Arab countries are rich with monuments, architectural heritage and ancient buildings that are priceless and reveal true history. The presence of these treasures in our land necessitates the cooperation of individuals, organizations and educational institutions to maintain the heritage and revive an interest in the buildings. This is of great significance to preserve our historical and cultural identity, which distinguishes the Arab World regionally and internationally.

Outdoors require less light intensity compared to indoors, emphasizing a theatrical appeal, and less focused on task illumination.

Before designing, considerations should be kept in mind. These involve aesthetics, mood lighting, technical, economic, and conservation aspects.

UNESCO guidelines and recommendations should also be put into an account.

Nour Aloush, an alumni from Architecture program at PSU in 2019. She started her career with I Design Architecture Company as a junior architect, aiming to gain a professional career background from real life experience.

Tala Hadhrawi, a young Saudi woman passionate about the realization of vision 2030 and is always on the lookout for the next great project. Tala graduated from PSU with a bachelor degree of Science in Architecture and is currently working with RCU as an Urban Planning and Design Analyst.

The last session in 2021 Spring semester, was held for the students, almuni and whoever is interested to pursue their masters degree Italy. POLIMI is among the top 20 universites in QS Ranking. and they have a MsC Program in English.

Fab lab is a place for anyone to make anything by using our digital design tools, 3D printers, laser cutting, and other advanced technology. It was established to keep pace with the latest techniques of contemporary crafts and modeling. Along with an effort to contribute to the Kingdom’s Vision 2030. In its essence, it revolves around transforming ideas into reality. Where all planning, designing, production, and manufacturing are done in one safe place. The lab provides the perfect environment for creativity and discovery to transform the ideas of our ambitious generation into a tangible reality.

The laboratory has been prepared to ensure the safety of students by providing sufficient space for their comfort and for the requirements of their projects under natural light and excellent ventilation. Each student is allowed to use the lab after passing an introductory workshop on lab services, usage rules, and safety regulations. To ensure the health and safety of the students, all technicians running the lab have been trained in evacuation drills and first aid systems. The lab is divided into 4 zones that differ in their functions and the required degree of safety. It starts with the area n. 3 and ends with the area n. 0, as it is the most demanding area for user control and where strict safety measures are in place.

The lab provides easy-to-use handcraft tools as well as more complex devices. The more complex the device becomes, the more courses are available to explain the device and its programs to assist the completion of student projects. The lab management is in constant contact with the teaching staff to cover the objectives of the practical lessons. The lab also provides consultations to choose the most appropriate device, for those who want to create models, that can achieve the desired result while maintaining the highest of quality standards. This includes choosing the right material and introducing students to the different types of materials and their properties.

Fab Lab participated in and organized many activities and competitions at the university. This stems from Prince Sultan University's keenness to encourage students to broaden their horizons and refine their craft skills. And more to come, God willing.
