WHY ARCC PROGRAMS?

For 36 years ARCC has offered extraordinary travel programs for teenagers with the mission of providing unique, life-changing educational experiences in places rarely visited and seldom experienced. We are extremely proud of the lasting impact that ARCC students have had on the people and the communities they encounter across the globe. ARCC sets the standard for delivering quality, fulfilling and enriching programs for our participants.

UNIQUE SERVICE LEARNING EXPERIENCES

ARCC is committed to delivering unique service projects that resonate deep within the communities we visit. ARCC students engage in intimate, authentic encounters with the people, cultures, and lands they visit while giving back in a meaningful way.

RICH EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING

Education is an essential part of the ARCC experience. Lessons throughout the program may be academic, in the form of program-specific curriculum, or may be experiential, delivered through immersion in new ideas and situations.

EXCEPTIONAL PROGRAM LEADERS

ARCC Leaders are exceptional individuals of extraordinary character and experience. Selected from many hundreds of applicants, ARCC Leaders are enthusiastic about serving others, and most importantly, helping our young adults thrive.

IMPECCABLE SAFETY RECORD

Our safety record is simply unmatched. We believe strongly in being proactive about the safety of our students. Every one of our leaders is required to go through an intensive 80-hour medical training ensuring they can create a safe environment for all students and act appropriately in the case of emergency.

ARCC BY THE NUMBERS:

ARCC leaders are outstanding individuals who inspire, motivate, mentor and set a positive example that lasts far beyond the summer’s end.

EXCEPTIONAL LEADERSHIP

With well over a 50% return rate, ARCC leaders range from 21–32 years old and have extensive experience in team leading, adventure travel, experiential education, service, and language. Each program is led by one male and one female leader. In addition to these leaders, we also enlist professional outfitters for our adventure activities such as rafting, surfing, and SCUBA diving.

EXTREMELY SELECTIVE HIRING PROCESS

ARCC’s outstanding reputation in the industry brings us hundreds of staff applications each year. We take careful steps to ensure we hire leaders with extraordinary character and experience. New leaders participate in a multi-stage interview/hiring process; this process includes a detailed application, multiple reference checks and multiple in-depth interviews. In addition, all leaders pass rigorous background checks in order to work for ARCC.

EXTENSIVE TRAINING CURRICULUM

Every ARCC leader has training in emergency wilderness medicine and all of our leaders are WFR certified (80 hours) or EMTs (120 hours). In addition to the multitude of experiences our leaders bring to ARCC, all leaders, new and returning are required to attend our eight-day intensive staff training focusing on trip safety, group dynamics, logistics, leadership, communications, protocols, and emergency procedures making them some of the most well-rounded leaders in the industry.

SPOTLIGHT PROJECT: NAWAISOMO VILLAGE

For almost 20 years, ARCC students have ventured into the heart of stunning Beqa Island, comprised of nine unique villages and known as the ‘Island of Firewalkers.’ Here villagers live in this tropical paradise as they have for centuries, existing off the land and the bounty of the sea. Each year our projects are directed by the Nawaisomo Village Chief, where we have installed community generators—providing light to the village for the very first time, built the elementary school, constructed homes for village elderly, taught English at the local primary school and taught classes at the local high school. ARCC is a treasured friend and partner to the Nawaisomo Village and each year our group is welcomed back with a huge village feast and celebration.

“In our daughter’s words, it was the ‘best experience of her life.’ Living with the family and working in the village was so important and meaningful to her. She was inspired by the leaders and connected with the entire group.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:

• Surf the Famous Waves of Bali’s Beautiful Bukit Peninsula

• Discover Wild Orangutans in the Pristine Rainforest of Northern Sumatra

• Explore the Vibrant and Spiritual City of Ubud and its Famous Monkey Forest

• Assist East Bali Communities to Improve Village Infrastructure

• Work with an Orangutan NGO to Restore Lifesaving Orangutan Habitat

Experience the most diverse archipelago on Earth, while soaking in the unique cultures of Bali and the pristine nature of Sumatra. Our adventure starts by exploring the jungle hamlet of Bukit Lawang and trekking into the rainforest to glimpse orangutans in their natural habitat. After viewing endangered orangutans amongst the trees we travel to our spotlight project where we work to help restore important habitat and create life-saving “green corridors” for wildlife. After our unbelievable adventures in Sumatra, we head to the spiritual island of Bali, the “Island of Gods.” Making our way through lush rice fields we arrive at our beautiful eco-camp in East Bali where we work with local villagers to improve important village infrastructure and learn about Balinese culture. Next, we explore the cobblestoned streets, ancient temples, and colorful markets of Ubud before making our way to the beautiful coastline for the chance to surf Bali’s famous waves. Our adventure comes to a close with a delicious final feast as we watch the sun set behind Bali’s rugged cliffs and then disappear into the sea.

SPOTLIGHT PROJECT: ORANGUTAN HABITAT RESTORATION

Considered critically endangered and on the brink of extinction, Sumatran Orangutans were once widespread throughout the forests of Asia. Due to clear-cutting, illegal trade, and habitat destruction, wild orangutans are now found in only two locations in the world. Following our trek in search of wild orangutans, we work with biologists from our Orangutan NGO partner to help restore what were once illegal palm oil plantations to healthy orangutan habitats. Through the collection of wild seedlings, work in a tree nursery, checking camera traps, and replanting important native species we help ensure the survival of the Sumatran Orangutan for future generations.

“ARCC truly does something incredible. Their way of incorporating so many inspiring activities in a single amount of time is awesome. You truly find yourself in a way you would never expect.”

Despite efforts to reduce homelessness in San Francisco, the numbers of those living on the street continue to be staggeringly high. We work to better the health and wellbeing of this underserved population by partnering with several local nonprofit organizations serving this community. We prepare and serve meals, organize donations and simply chat with patrons to learn their story. Through this outreach, we make life a bit more comfortable and gain perspective and knowledge of hardships so different from our own. Using our new skills we then create, plan and implement our own homeless outreach. Our eye-opening work in these neighborhoods allow us to bring this project home and implement it in our own communities.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:

• Build and Enhance Habitats for Rescued Wildlife at a Locally Run Animal Refuge

• Whitewater Raft through the Pacuare River’s Lush Rainforest

• Protect Sea Turtles and Their Caribbean Coastal Habitat

• Hike Alongside a Volcano and Soak in Tranquil Natural Hot Springs

• Zipline Through the Vibrant Jungle Canopy

Costa Rica Wildlife Conservation was designed for those with the biggest hearts ready to leave their mark on communities and aid wildlife in need. Live and work in places that bring together two distinct service projects for the quintessential Costa Rica service learning experience. Work on the remotely peaceful Caribbean beaches protecting sea turtle nesting areas and see if you can spot hatchlings make their way to the sea. Raft the rolling rapids of the Pacuare River and zipline through the vibrant green jungle. For our spotlight project, learn about animal trafficking and other threats to wildlife as we work alongside Costa Ricans, building much-needed infrastructure for animals who have been rescued from living as an exotic pet. Explore a nearby national park as we hike alongside a volcano and soak in volcanically heated hot springs.

SPOTLIGHT PROJECT: WILDLIFE HABITAT ENHANCEMENT

In Costa Rica, 25% of the country is protected land, where animals roam free. Despite this abundance of land, there are still animals that are captured year after year, trafficked, and used as exotic pets. We immerse ourselves working in a local wildlife refuge, where animals are rescued from their lives as pets, rehabilitated from injury and, if possible, released back into the wild. Here we help improve and build a new much needed habitat enclosure, prepare food and structural toys for the animals, and clean and lend a hand wherever we can. We get to know our new animal friends—macaws, kinkajous and monkeys, among many others, who all call this refuge in the jungle their home.

“Nick came home and said this program had changed him in so many ways—we are delighted. They made real connections with the local people and community and this made it so different from the other programs out there.”

SPOTLIGHT PROJECT: ELDERLY OUTREACH

Even in Cuba’s socialist society, some of the elderly need a helping hand. Our Cuba: Making History Spotlight Project focuses on preparing and delivering food to this marginalized community of people unable to adequately feed themselves. Working with our in-country partner, ARCC students come together to purchase and prepare meals in a local kitchen. Then, using a form of transportation unique to Cuba—the horse and buggy—we deliver these meals to the homes of the elderly who cannot afford meals or can no longer cook for themselves. This heart-warming project gives us an unusual glimpse into lives previously unseen by outsiders and creates a connection between participants that bridges decades, cultures and nationalities.

Appreciate the bounty of Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands through the eyes of those who call it home.

SPOTLIGHT PROJECT: QUITUGO DEVELOPMENT

In rural communities in the Andean highlands of Ecuador, most family homes have dirt and mud floors and lack any type of hard flooring. In addition to being uncomfortable, cold and wet, this living environment poses health risks, especially for young children, and can lead to a host of preventable diseases. Dirt floors are impossible to clean and become an even greater health risk during the rainy season when the floors turn to mud and standing water pools in low areas. For our spotlight project, we work alongside local families to install concrete floors in their homes, transforming their lives and providing them with a clean and healthy living environment.

“Marin had an amazing experience and found the adventure portion to be fun and exciting and the service portion to be meaningful. She loved her leaders and the other students on her trip.”

SPOTLIGHT PROJECT: PROTECT THE BAY

Take action for the ocean by growing and transplanting living coral, and helping to restore vital habitat for marine mammals, fish and sea turtles. As the number of visitors to Hawaii steadily increases, educating newcomers on reef etiquette and the rich ecosystems surrounding the island is critical to the survival of sensitive ocean-dwelling animals. Work alongside scientists and educators to become a certified “ReefTeacher,” collecting water-quality and environmental data to monitor the bay’s health. Through volunteer-driven educational projects, partner with a local grassroots organization to ensure the bay remains a healthy and welcoming place for residents, visitors, and sea creatures alike.

In the rugged Indian Himalayas, at altitudes as high as 17,000 feet, a staggering 963 schools are struggling to provide adequate schooling for rural communities. We work with an incredible local organization that is seeking to stop the flow of families to far away cities in search of better schools and a better education. We travel to these remote village schools through some of the world’s most spectacular landscapes crossing stunning green meadows, following fast-flowing mountain streams, and encountering herds of yak along the way. Once there, we become a much-desired resource for the teachers in these isolated communities, providing enriched learning and a unique connection to an outside world rarely glimpsed by their students. In addition to active classroom tutoring, we refurbish classrooms and build playgrounds for these remote high-altitude schools.

Cross these amazing countries by overland vehicle, experiencing Tanzania and Kenya like a local. The charm and wild nature of your East African expedition will remain within you forever.

SPOTLIGHT PROJECT: BUILDING SOLAR POWER SYSTEMS

Throughout most of rural Kenya, the majority of homes lack electricity. This leaves only daylight hours for homework, productive activities and other means of earning income. Kerosene lanterns are sometimes used, but they are too expensive for many families and burn toxic fumes in the home. Our spotlight project partners with a Masai village and introduces this essential utility—electricity—to enrich the lives of its residents through the construction and installation of solar power systems in family homes. Working side by side with villagers to build and install solar panels and batteries, we are there when grateful families see their homes illuminated with electric light for the very first time. Though a simple system, this installation creates a healthier, safer, and more productive future for Kenyans.

Experience daily life in traditional Peruvian communities and make new friends working together side-by-side. Discover Peru’s many hidden wonders on this unique journey back in time.

SPOTLIGHT PROJECT: GREENHOUSE CONSTRUCTION

Food sovereignty is the right to have access to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound methods. This year we have been given a unique opportunity to learn about sustainable agriculture by building a greenhouse that will expand the local community’s access to diverse, nutritional food sources. The diverse foods grown in the greenhouse will be shared by local families and supplement school lunches, which currently include little fresh fruits or vegetables. By providing nutritious meal options, students are more likely to attend their classes and families live healthier lives. Due to the high altitude of the Sacred Valley, citrus and strawberries can’t be grown without a greenhouse, which will add additional sources of nutrition to the families’ diets. This project allows us unique access to work alongside a rural Peruvian community very different from ours at home.

The after-effects of its use have severely impacted both U.S. servicemen and up to three million Vietnamese people, including the children and grandchildren of those originally impacted during the war. On the Southeast Asia program, our students volunteer and tutor with an inspiring organization that supports a village comprised solely of those impacted by Agent Orange. The work done by our students during this section is equally empowering to both those volunteering and to those receiving such special attention from ARCC students.

“Holly came back with such historical perspective on the countries she visited. She is appreciative of how little these people have and how happy they can be. She also enjoyed being away from her phone more than anything. I think she came back with a sense of selflessness.”

Explore rainforest hillsides in Chiang Mai, the bustling city of Bangkok, and island life on the Southern Peninsula. Soak up the sun on the pristine white-sand beaches, boat through karst peaks along the Andaman shores looking for elusive sea cows, and earn your PADI SCUBA certification diving amongst the abundant and colorful flora and fauna. Our extraordinary adventure allows us to be fully immersed in the many diverse sides of Thailand and experience this wonderful country through the eyes of locals and large mammals.

SPOTLIGHT PROJECT: HARMONY IN THE HUMAN-ELEPHANT CONFLICT

Thailand’s elephant population has decreased significantly—from as many as 100,000 a century ago to under 4,000 today. Adult elephants consume 200 to 600 pounds of food every day and up to 50 gallons of water, so it’s no wonder that these gentle giants aren’t so gentle on farmland, which has largely replaced their natural habitat. To provide farmers with alternatives to using harmful deterrents on elephants, we build dams and salt licks on a national reserve where elephants can go to get necessary water and nutrients without being shooed by angry farmers. We also plant trees for food and habitat, chat with local farmers and conservationists, and stay on private land that has been given to wild elephants as a safe corridor where they are able to roam freely through, accessing the river between two farms. We’ll keep a watch out for these wild elephants, and we’ll spend plenty of time up close and personal with elephants too, visiting sanctuaries in Kanchanaburi and Chiang Mai provinces.

“Pietra was deeply influenced by local ecological issues, religious values, cultural differences based on religion, and of course the need to save elephants from ever being ridden again. All while enjoying local foods, markets, and of course the people.”

SPOTLIGHT PROJECT: VILLAGE HILL TRIBE COMMUNITY

SCHOOL

Surrounded by the lush jungles and rice paddies of Northern Thailand, we head into a rural hill tribe village where young students get very little exposure to native English-speakers. During our time in this welcoming community, we teach English to eager and energetic primary-school aged children through one-on-one sessions and fun, interactive songs and games. We then lend a helping hand on various infrastructure projects to improve the local school and community center. Our time in this beautiful village is unforgettable as we explore, work, and share laughs with our local students.

“Anyone who is looking for an eye opening cultural experience should choose Thailand. Thai culture is so welcoming and caring. The amount of love I felt during the hill tribe service was unforgettable. You don’t get to feel that very often.”

SPOTLIGHT PROJECT: PROJECT CLEAN WATER

Despite an abundance of water in Cambodia, access to clean water sources for rural communities is very limited. Due to a lack of developed infrastructure, nearly half of the Cambodian population consumes water that is unsafe to drink, and the results are devastating to public health. The focus project of our Vietnam and Cambodia service program is to construct bio-sand water filters and install these filters into homes of rural community members. Once installed, the water filters provide safe drinking water for each family for up to 40 years and reduce the prevalence of waterborne diseases in these rural communities.

“Vietnam and Cambodia opened my eyes to the global community around me and made me excited about [using my life] to improve the quality of other people’s lives.”

ARCC’S EXPECTATIONS:

While there is no experience necessary to participate in an ARCC program, there are some critical attributes that we expect of all ARCC participants. We expect students to maintain high standards of personal behavior. A successful ARCC program requires participants to have a positive and unselfish attitude on the trip as well as an open mind and flexibility. ARCC programs are ‘hard work-hard play.’ We hope everyone will actively commit to all the program’s activities, as teamwork is often required for the experience to be successful. ARCC does not tolerate the possession or use of tobacco products, illegal drugs or alcohol. Any student

found possessing or engaging in one of these activities will be sent home immediately at their own expense and without refund. We take great pride in creating the best possible program itineraries. The descriptions of the programs provided in this catalog and on our website represent our plans as we make them. However certain aspects of the program or itinerary may not happen exactly as described. Service projects can change based on the needs of the communities, schools, non-profits, NGOs and other organizations. To get the most out of an ARCC experience, participants need to be flexible and open to changes.
