PROJECT THESIS - COLOURS PROJECT: ARCHITECTURAL SERVICE DEPARTMENT 17060 N.T. MINOR WORKS

LOCATION: TAP MUN NEW FISHERMAN'S VILLAGE, TAP MUN HA WAI AND TAP MUN PIER PUBLIC TOILETS

The projects are about refurbishment of different public toilets in Tap Mun. The project are aiming to bring blue and pink, iconic colour for male and female into the public toilet, creating a more wide colour range using different materials and textures to the old, rusty public toilets. The refurbishment projects also bring new toilet compartments and facilities into the existing toilets which all needs to comply with the current BFA and Food and Environmental Hygiene Department standard of toilets.

INSTRUMENT OF THE COMMONS Blue and Pink are the most iconic colours to identify male and female. These two colours create a strong signage for male and female toilet without any indications. Using the different material and colour can create a strong contrast and refreshing feeling.

TAP MUN PUBLIC TOILET - SCHEMATIC DESIGN The general toilet layout is based on the existing building, and refurbishment is to comply with its structure and current standard. The plan shows the design of the male and female toilet. The plan and section show the user of different material choices that proposed to use in the public restrooms. The colours used in the proposal are in harmony with the external.

These three public toilets have the same design language and colour, allowing people to recognise the bathroom from far distance where there are a lot of visitors during the weekends.

TAP MUN PIER TENDER DRAWING In the tender drawings for the Tap Mun Pier public toilet, it shows different informations for the contractor to refurbish for this specific toilet, for example, site location, plan and section, finishes schedule, etc.

REFURBISHMENT WORK Along with public toilet projects, there are different types of refurbishment works to do. For example, this project is to add three new flag pole and resurface of the podium area in the building. The drawings show the contractor the site location, proposed layout plan and typical details required to refurbish on-site.

PROJECT THESIS - PLAY AND WAIT The project is an exploration of the ideas of joyful and time. It aims to change the Lace house into a residential building into a waiting area for the coach passenger in Pool Valley Coach Station, allowing people to spend joyful time while waiting for the bus.

The project is to combine the temporary and co-temporary structure into one building structures Platforms in the building change in a different period for different circulations to create freshness of the playground.

The building provides three primary purposes: Waiting Room, Playground & Accommodation.

COMMON OF JOYFUL This collage shows different joys that I want to show in my building design. I want to bring a more playful time when waiting for the coach in the Pool Valley. The common of joyful should be free to the public. Joy of the building design brings nothing like in a cinema or a theme park, but more like a playground that brings people to gather around and spread the joyfulness.

PROGRAMMES This drawing shows different programmes inside the building. It contains 11 other spaces which all connect by the grid structure. Each zona has its areas inside the building; for example, there is a cafe for people to wait for the coach, and the accommodation pods allow people to rest before the coach arrives.

The plan and section show different steel structure columns that hold up the wooden cube in the building. It also shows different circulations inside the cube building.

PERSPECTIVE VIEWS Each perspective view shows how different spaces are connected with the grids. The building uses the density of the grid to create a separation between other rooms. It also establishes a connection with the surrounding. The screen is denser when privacy is needed. When its looser, people can see through the grid pattern to the whole building. The density also controls different lightings in different spaces. The cubes can create various programmes on the site based on its flexibility.

This section shows the practical (left) and pleasure (right) zones. On the left, there are the Indoor & Outdoor Waiting Room and Storage Room. On the right, there are the cafe and the viewing platform.

Light can pass through the glass roof and reach the cafe directly, whereas the storage room is only partial lighten to create a different atmosphere.

This section shows two zones that connect. On the left, there are the coach station and the waiting platform. On the right, there are Floor 1.0 playground, Floor 1.8 Shortcut and the Floor 3.2 Maze. Different zones connect as one under the grid structure. People can see different floors in different view angles.

FINAL SECTION MODEL This section model shows part of the staircase, waiting room, storage room and coach station. The model also shows the ground foundation, structure and facade. The coach station, waiting room and storage room are all connected and link by a staircase. The functions of all spaces on this site are all practical for the people who travel by coach.

TECHNOLOGY Using the design project to develop the knowledge and understanding of how to make good and valid technical choices in the future architectural design practice. THE GRID | COACH STATION | SECTION (TECHNOLOGY) This section cut through seven different areas in the coach station "Grid". It shows different materials and constructions for various purposes. The primary structure of this building is the wooden grid structures which are supported by the steel box truss frames. All the spaces in this building are a semi-outdoor area which is sheltered by the glass roof, except the Cafe, which has a different level of insulation. This building aims to provide a joyful and playful experience inside the building.

03 - THE COMMONS - TIME & SPACE

COURSE: DESIGN: STUDIO PROJECT (YEAR 3)

PROJECT THESIS - TEMPORARY SPACE

LOCATION: BRIGHTON, EAST SUSSEX, UNITED KINGDOM

The project is set in the Valley Garden in Brighton, UK. It aims to establish a temporary pavilion for people to use.

TUTOR: GRAHAM PERRING, ANDREW PAINE

The project is using a grid system design where it is easy to assemble and to disassemble on site.

The pavilion is set for people three programmes: Exhibition, isolation and sitting. These three different programmes can connect seamlessly with the architectural language.

SITE LOCATION The site is in the intersection in Old Steine. The movement in there are the most interesting and busiest in town. The vehicles and people are two different forms but have huge relationship between them. Different objects can illustrate the relationship of different movement. To understand the site, I had studied the site history and movement and link them together with an instrument and pavilion.

BETWEEN THE LINE TIME - MOVEMENT - CITY RHYTHMS ( ECONOMIC ) Time changes everything. Tram was a popular choice of traveling in Brighton in the 1900s. However, the lack of flexibility of the tram service which needs a railway to run, buses have taken over in Brighton during the 1930s. Buses can travel far more distance in Brighton as most of the landscape are uphill. In this drawing, I explore the relationship of bus and tram routes around in the Valley Garden, exploring the relationship of present and future. Even time changes, the importance of Valley Garden has not changed. The movement of vehicles and human are still surrounding in Valley Garden. It is the busiest area in the town. The movement around the Valley Garden connects each part of the city of Brighton, creates bonding. Different parts of the Valley Garden show different movements and spatial experiences.

Model - Movement Model is used to study how different movement overlap in the intersection with time. Different colours of string represent the vehicle and pedestrian movement.

The Red zones are where people walk-in foot the most.

The Green zones are the greenery area of Valley Garden.

The Yellow zone is where the most traffic conjunction occurs, where it is in Old Steine.

BRIEF 01A: FRAGILE RELATIONSHIPS Timeline Sectional Landscape Study (Past & Present) Space and time have a fragile but direct relationship with each other. When time passes, spaces change. In the Old Steine Cafe, space changed throughout different periods. The shelter was used as a tram station and public toilet, and it is now converted into a cafe in the Victoria Garden. You cannot see the time changes but experience the time itself through spaces. In this section drawing, you can see the changes in time and uses in term of movement and occupants. The left and right is the past and present, respectively. The movement in the cafe changes in a different timeline. Colour in this drawing create contrast in the past and present timeline.

INSTRUMENT OF THE COMMONS

Axonometric View

An instrument allows the user to experience the space through different feelings. The design is based on the design system of Bernard Tschumi. The 3D grid covers the area where the movements of people and cars are. It designs around the change of movement in the intersection. There are also LED light embedded to the frame to create a traffic system and an art installation itself.

The traffic system is a time and space object where people can feel in different aspects, in person and in vehicular point of view.

PAVILION - MODULAR COMPONENTS The modular pavilion allows people to experience time and space. There are three different spaces for people to interact with the space, the Photo Gallery, the isolated space and the public space. Each module can be in the individual component where they separate on the ground. The individual layout creates common spaces in between those modules. Each module can also be combined into one component. Space are connected, and movement join within each box. The boxes can be connected to create a bigger common space.

MODEL - TRANSFORMATION These three models show how individual modular boxes can be transformed into a combined unit that facilitates people. Different programmes join together to create one big unique plan and gather other people to use the space. The model allows us to experience the room on a smaller scale to see everything through the grid. People can observe each movement in the pavilion with the grid.

04 - CINQUE PORT COURSE: DESIGN: STUDIO PROJECT 4 (YEAR 2)

RYE - MOMENT Rye is a small medieval town. It is located in Rother district, East Sussex. The cobbled street along with narrow passages reveal the fabric of the town among with preserved Medieval, Tudor and Georgian buildings. For centuries, Rye perched on a hill at the estuary of the River Rother. Architecture in Rye contains different materials and textures .

PROJECT THESIS - GREENERY The project introduces a whole new greenhouse for the town, Rye, re-framing Rye to create a contemporary greenery leisure area. It is an attempt to change Rye while keeping the existing radically.

The project sets in a fictional scenario where Rye is in the centre of a megacity. Rye is converted into the central park for the megacity.

The greenhouse is part of the park where it is the primary connection between Rye and the megacity across the river. The building is also connected to the fictional train station.

LION STREET SURVEY VIDEO

This nineteen-seconds video is compressed from a minute video. It shows the movement and architecture of Lion Street from St Mary Church to the old Grammar school. The movement of people and car in this video are drawn in my final Sequence drawing. Each picture represents each frame per second of the compressed video.

To understand the architecture of Rye, I picked the Lion Street in Rye to study the texture and movement in this site survey. The roads are patched with different textures, including pebble stone, brick and gravel. In the plan, you can only see the existing building that I can observed from outside where the dark grey area is the semi-private space that is hidden for my eye sight. The movement of cars and people are represented by light grey. It corresponds to the one minute Lion Street video, from the St Mary Church to the Old Grammar School.

Area

CHANGE - MEGACITY in the future, Rye changes itself into a preserved historical area for tourism. It is a central park of a megacity. The city expands around Rye and creates different networks and zones; residential, industrial and commercial. Different infrastructures are built into the city, like the train station, park and stadium. As more people flows into the city, beaches form around Rye, creating a very popular tourist attraction.

Technology - Stairs The project include a sector of a stairs that comply with current BFA standard. It shows plan, section & 3D view of a stair in the greenhouse. The stairs shows how it comply with the BFA standard by showing dimensions and details.

SPACES To separate the megacity with the historical town, Rye, a greenhouse is proposed in this project.

The proposed site connects with a fictional high-speed railway station, and the greenhouse allows people to relax in it. The Eden Project positively inspires the greenhouse in Cornwall, UK. There are a lot of programmes inside the large conservatory, for example, the cafe, book store and the tropical house. The whole greenhouse acts as a bridge to connect the new and the old with greenery.

SECTION The large hand-drawn perspective section shows different programmes inside the greenhouse.

Each programme uses different lighting to create other effects in each area. The temperature in each room is all uniform as the whole climate is controlled under one extensive system. The sectional model shows how the whole greenhouse embedded to the site landscape.
