Directors’ Welcome

Welcome to the 23rd Annual Orchestra Benefit Dinner and Concert! There have been many wonderful experiences in the past twenty-some years of this event, and every year has been special in a unique way. There have been so many memorable performances by our student ensembles and combined orchestra finales. We have enjoyed classical music, clapped with a variety of hoedowns, and been moved listening to “When You Wish upon a Star.” Tonight, we present the Arcadia High School Orchestra edition of the Grammy Awards!

In this program are the names of the parents who work so hard and give of their personal time and effort for the students of our orchestra program. A special word of thanks to our Chairpersons Angela Hui, Felice Kwan, and Nana Shen, and the crew of parent volunteers whose hard work and dedication to the orchestra students become obvious as all their planning becomes reality tonight. Thank you also to our Music Club President, Eric Shen, our VP of Orchestra, Shirley Chen, and the members of the Arcadia Music Club for their endless support and efforts to bring instrumental music to more than 800 students at Arcadia High School. Thank you also to our team of music directors at Arcadia High School and the middle schools: Kevin Sherrill, Seth Murphy, Stephen Pu, Mike Danielson, Jeff Grable, and Karl Morton for their never-ending encouragement and support. Finally, thanks to our Board of Education of the Arcadia Unified School District and High School Administration and Staff for their continuing commitment to arts and music education, which, at Arcadia, is unique and cherished by the teachers and students. Parents, grandparents, friends, alumni, neighbors, and all other supporters of the AHS Orchestra Program: you are the greatest. Thank You!!! And of course tonight could not be possible without our fantastic students. Orchestra students: THANK YOU for your patience, understanding, determination and hard work to be your very best. You have all worked extremely hard in preparation for tonight’s performance, and we all look forward to hearing your beautiful music. And now the reason why we are all here: Sit back and enjoy the student ensembles, guest artist Bill Cantos, and our own 290-member Arcadia High School Orchestra as we present the “Arcadia High School Music Awards” Tom Forbes and Pin Chen Orchestra Directors 1

Dr. Richard W. Cordano Principal, Arcadia High School 1965 – 1985 Dr. Richard Cordano was a gifted educator, leader, trusted friend and mentor to hundreds of students, teachers and administrators who were fortunate to have been with him during his almost 40 years in public education. Known affectionately as “Dr. Cee,” Dr. Cordano had one of the longest tenures of a public school leader in California. Dr. Cordano has been recognized over the years for developing the “Arcadian Way,” of dealing with students, parents and the community which created great affection and loyalty to Arcadia High School. One of his highest priorities was building the School’s choral music, orchestra and nationally recognized band programs. Arcadia’s sister city in Australia heard about its outstanding reputation and asked the band to play in one of its major parades. In addition to traveling abroad, Dr. Cordano used his influence as a long time member to persuade the Tournament of Roses to invite “his school” to participate in the New Year’s Day parade. Since the 1970s, Arcadia has taken part in many Tournament of Roses parades. The campus enjoyed a growth spurt during Dr. Cordano’s over 20 years. He oversaw the building of an Olympic-size swimming pool, library and the enlargement of the cafeteria and north gym. He would have been immensely proud of the music program today that has reached unparalleled success due to the outstanding support from the parents, excellent teachers and gifted students. Written by Debbi Cordano, Dr. Cee’s loving daughter. Having very close ties with the City of Arcadia for many years, she now resides in the neighboring City of Pasadena. Dr. Richard Cordano passed away at age 94 and a half years young on February 23th, 2016.

32

Dr. Richard W. Cordano – An Appreciation I am a product of Arcadia High School (Class of 1969) and Dr. Richard Cordano was my principal. While my high school career was hardly remarkable, throughout the subsequent years Dr. Cordano treated me with kindness and respect as a fellow Apache. But that is the way he treated everyone. Known affectingly as “Dr. C” by his former teachers and students, Dr. Cordano was 94 years young when he died, leaving a legacy of integrity, charm, and the highest level of professionalism. Born in Los Angeles, Dr. Cordano spent all of his schooling in the Los Angeles Unified School District. This tenure in public education marked a turning point in his life as he would return to education first as a teacher and later as an administrator. Marrying Dolly, Dr. Cordano’s wife, was one of the greatest joys of his life. His marriage was a true partnership lasting 49 years. Dr. Cordano was a proud World War II veteran, having served his country as a Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy. Aboard the USS Capricornus AKA 57, he was in every major battle in the Pacific. From this experience, he gained superb leadership and people skills, expertise that would serve him well in his professional life. Throughout his career, he maintained contact with his shipmates, returning to annual reunions sponsored by the USS Capricornus Association. Using the GI Bill, Dr. Cordano first went to Pasadena City College and then transferred to his beloved USC where he earned his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees. He began his career as a teacher in the Pasadena Unified School District and then transferred to the Arcadia Unified School District as principal of Arcadia High School from 1963 to 1985, one of the longest tenures of a public school leader in California. That tenure at Arcadia High was legendary serving as a visionary education leader, supportive colleague, and caring mentor for thousands of Apache students including me. At Arcadia High, Dr. Cordano oversaw many significant construction projects such as the building of the library, an Olympic size swimming pool, and enlargement of the cafeteria and north gym. He was masterful in developing the “Arcadian Way” of dealing with students, parents, and the community, which created great affection and loyalty to the high school. He gave the teachers the freedom to run their classrooms in the way that they felt had the most impact on the students.

33

He also started many traditions that earned national recognition and still exist today. Dr. Cordano and a member of the Arcadia Tribune staff started a 5K run (now sponsored by Santa Anita Park) that raised proceeds for the first all-weather track. That, in turn, helped create the nationally known Arcadia Invitational Track Meet which brings athletes together from all over the United States.

Dr. Cordano also served as president of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Section for two terms during a transitionary period when girl’s athletics were being phased in at public schools. Perhaps Dr. Cordano’s most significant impact on the Arcadia High School curriculum was the initiation of quarter classes as opposed to the more traditional semester courses. For its time, this was a large step forward in providing students with more choices in their high school academic experience. Dr. Cordano was always proud of the high percentages of students who continued on to higher education. Arcadia High School was well known among colleges and universities throughout the nation for sending academically well prepared students. He also placed a high priority in building choral music, orchestra, and the nationally-recognized band, programs. His passion was making sure that Arcadia High students had the right training and opportunities in academics, the arts, and athletics to pursue whatever dreams they had for a future career. After retiring as principal, Dr. Cordano worked 12 years as a district manager of the California State Lottery. He also served many years as an active member of the Arcadia Beautiful Commission. To celebrate Dr. Cordano's legacy as an outstanding principal, friend, and colleague, his former teachers and students made a substantial donation to the Arcadia Performing Arts Center to name a rehearsal room in Dr. Cordano's honor. We all miss Dr. Cordano, but his positive impact as an innovative and caring educator lives on at Arcadia High School and throughout our community.

Sincerely, Gary A. Kovacic Former Mayor, City of Arcadia Arcadia High School (Class of 1969) Gary Kovacic recently completed 18 years on the Arcadia City Council including six terms as mayor. He is a life-long resident of Arcadia and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1969. His current community activities include CEO/President of the Arcadia Performing Arts Foundation, Vice-President of Foothill Unity Center, and a volunteer coach of the award-winning Arcadia High School Constitution Team. He is a practicing attorney with an office in Pasadena.

My Tribute to Dr. Cordano Dr. Richard Cordano was my High School Principal for the 3 years I attended Arcadia High School from 1974 to 1977. I was a refugee from the Los Angeles Unified School District and judging from being one of only four Asian students in my sophmore class, I did indeed feel like a refugee during my first day on campus. But quite to my surprise, the atmosphere at Arcadia High School was quite welcoming and I attribute this to the leadership of Dr. Cordano. He was a very impressive man who dressed impeccably and was known widely by the student body as a friendly advocate for everyone on campus, except maybe for that Mr. Silverstein guy who preyed on my naivetĂŠ and almost had me convinced that Dr. Cordano and Ricardo Montalban were the same person. Two and a half decades later, I had a chance to reconnect with Dr. Cordano through his daughter Debbie, who worked in the Foundation Office at Methodist Hospital. He remarkably believed I had accomplished enough in my life to deserve an invitation to speak at an Arcadia High School Teachers Alumni luncheon so I went. It was fun sharing stories with the teachers I grew up with. I shared the little known fact that Dr. Cordano and I attended the same Castelar elementary school in Los Angeles Chinatown. Of course the curriculum differed for the two of us - he learned how to shoot craps there and I learned how to evade gangsters. Good times shared with a very good man. Many successful Apaches owe a great debt of gratitude to our Principal Richard Cordano. Dr. Andrew Lee is currently a primary physician now practicing in Arcadia. He is former Chief of Staff with the Methodist Hospital, and currently serving on various boards volunteering his time and expertise in medical fields through the hospital.

Dr. Cee was often being mistaken to be the movie star, Recardo Montalban, leading star of Fantasy Island years back at the time.

My Tribute to Dr. Cordano I am very fortunate to have been both a student and colleague of Dr. C. During my time as a student at Arcadia High School, I looked to Dr. C as a great role model. As our principal, he displayed his care and love for the students, faculty, and community. He was a true educator wanting the students of Arcadia to be well rounds with academics, sports and the arts. He could be seen at most school functions cheering on his beloved Apaches. He always put the students and faculty first. My experience with Dr. C changed when I was hired to teach Music in Arcadia. I was able to see how truly proud he was of the AHS staff. I was fortunate to hear him speak to different organizations and as he talked about the students, he would also brag about the faculty and staff that he had the pleasure to lead. During a typical day at Arcadia HS, one would often hear from across the quad, “Hello Dr. C.” He would then acknowledge you with a wave and a big smile. In 1982, Dr. Cordano traveled with the Apache Marching Band to Australia. He was so proud, I think he had a smile on his face every single minute during our travels through Australia. Dr. Cordano continued to support Arcadia High School and the music Program after he retired. He would host an annual luncheon for AHS retired teachers and staff. At the luncheon, he would honor recently retired staff members and reminisce with everyone about the great times at Arcadia High School.

The Orchestra Room is honored to have one of our practice rooms dedicated to the memory Dr. Richard Cordano. We refer to it as the “Cordano Room” and I have told the story of Dr. C to all my classes about his great love for every single student past and present. I like to tell my students he is cheering for them even today. We all miss Dr. C, but I get to think about him every day as teach at the greatest school around. Sincerely, Thomas J. Forbes Arcadia High School, Class of 1975 Arcadia High School Orchestra Director 1989-present
