Arbor Times Q4 2024

Page 1

Pride

Coming to work every day, it is sometimes easy to lose perspective. It’s easy to simply move from one meeting or task to the next, and it’s easy to get caught up in this problem or that problem. It’s easy to lose track of how far we have come in such a short amount of time.

And then things happen, and you step back and see the bigger picture.

In early-September, the Utility Arborists Association held its annual Trees & Utilities Conference in Fort Worth, Texas. Thirty of our leaders attended the event. Both Xylem and Kendall sponsored the event and exhibited on the trade show floor. And we hosted a private rodeo for over 200 customers. The feedback from our customers was wonderful. For the first time, it really felt that Xylem Kendall was on the big stage, and you could see our competitors take notice.

And before the dust from the rodeo could settle, storm season kicked into high gear. As Hurricane Helene made its way inland, we mobilized more than 2,000 team members (1,200 of them off system) from around the country to hit the ground running and help our utility partners get the lights back on for millions of Americans. And as soon as Helene restoration started to wind down, Milton came ashore, and the vast majority of these coworkers were right back at it.

Never have we brought so many team members to bear in response to storms. No longer do I feel as if we are on the big stage…I know we are. And never have I been prouder than I am today of what we have achieved together.

We all share this success.

In the months to come, we are continuing with additional acquisitions. We are continuing to build our support capabilities to ensure our crews in the field have everything they need. We are continuing to impress our customers with our commitment to excellence. It’s our time on the big stage, and I am so happy that we are on this journey together.

Let’s finish 2024 strong, and let’s prepare for an even better 2025!

With much pride, Randolph

Open Enrollment Starts November 4

Our Annual Open Enrollment period is quickly approaching! This is the time of year when you can add or drop coverage or make changes to your current benefits, which goes into effect January 1, 2025.

We continue to offer a robust benefit package that gives you several options, including the following:

Three medical plans

Two dental plans

Two vision plans

Short & Long Term Disability

Voluntary Life Insurance

Other ancillary benefits

For current employees, it is important to note that this is the ONLY time you can add, drop, or change benefits throughout the year, unless you have a new Life Event. Getting married or having a baby qualifies as a Life Event. Gaining or losing coverage elsewhere also counts as a Life Event. For example, you might decide to use your spouse’s insurance coverage instead of your own.

We always recommend you participate in Open Enrollment so you can see how your benefits and/or costs might change and to make new elections if you want. However, if you do not participate, all benefits that you elected in 2024 that are still available in 2025 will automatically carry over to the new year.

Changes for 2025

It is important to note, if you have the Anthem HSA 6500 PPO plan with a Healthcare Savings Account (HSA) and are making a weekly contribution, you must participate in Open Enrollment to make a new election for 2025, or your HSA contribution will go to zero.

To streamline our benefits, we have condensed the Accident, Critical Illness, and Hospital Indemnity plans. If you are enrolled in one of these plans currently, you will be automatically mapped to the option that is continuing in 2025, unless you actively choose otherwise.

Due to low enrollment and/or utilization, we have discontinued Legal, Identity Theft, and Pet Insurance in 2025. Not to worry! If you are currently enrolled in one of these benefits, you can continue it directly through the carrier. Be sure to check your email in the coming weeks for more information.

You will receive specific instruction on how to participate in Open Enrollment, as well as rates, plan details, and more. Please read all of your emails and texts so you don’t miss any important information.

If you have questions about Open Enrollment, you can reach out to Benefits by calling 1-877-949-1113 or by emailing benefits@xylemtree.com or benefits@wakendall.com.

The Future of Learning: Leveraging AI to Develop Training Videos

One of our Guiding Principles is Employee Success. We help promote your success through continuous learning. Whether you watch the daily tailgate training or click a Tree Academy “how to” segment - these videos are an important part of your professional development.

We work with Reelist, based in Norfolk, VA, to develop our informative short-form videos. The company's platform uses AI (artificial intelligence) to create avatars, which we can then easily script and edit to produce training videos. That’s right, you’re watching avatars of real-life Xylem Kendall employees!

How it Works

Team members are recorded and filmed in a professional studio, which ensures consistent imaging and sound quality for all videos.

First, the participant’s voice is recorded while reading a short message. This is what enables the AI technology to generate what the avatars are saying in the likeness of the employee’s own voice. Then, the person is filmed in front of a “green screen” while reading about 120 sentences aloud. This process captures the participants’ natural head and hand motions.

Using software from Colossyan, we write a script and assign that content to one of 26 custom staff avatars. The software generates the video, which we can then edit and update as needed.

By leveraging AI technology, we reduce both production time and costs, enabling us to quickly develop and distribute quality videos to the entire workforce. Also, the Avatars never make bloopers –they always get their lines right on the first take!

¡Feliz Mes de la Herencia Hispana!

As we reflect on Hispanic Heritage Month, which occurs September 15-October 15, we thank all of our Hispanic employees for their contributions to our success. You are integral to our workforce and we appreciate your dedication to our core values of Trust, Transparency, Respect, and Unity. We understand that there are varying and diverse Hispanic cultures, traditions, identities, and experiences and we appreciate Liz, Martín, and Awilda for sharing their perspective on Hispanic Heritage and what it means to them.

Liz Dueñas, Talent Acquisition

Hispanic Heritage month is special to me as a Mexican-American because we celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day September 15 and 16. It’s a big two days where we come together with family and friends, sharing traditional dishes, enjoying music, and singing and dancing together.

It’s great to be able to represent our flag no matter where we are. I've been part of a local celebration and flag parade, where we “flashed the flags” of Latin American countries here in the state of Virginia. It was also an opportunity for people to learn

about the services offered by local Hispanic business owners. It was very fulfilling and refreshing to celebrate together as if we were home.

For me, Hispanic Heritage Month is a reminder to embrace my culture, which is strongly based in family. We trust in family and I treat my job and everyone on my team as part of my family. We really look out for each other and help each other out. Even though we might speak a different language, we are hard workers and take a lot of pride in the work we do every day.

This month is a chance to reflect on our culture, our families, and where we are from. It’s also a time to reflect on the blessing to be bilingual and work in the US. Although it’s Hispanic Heritage Month, our team celebrates our different cultures every day, especially with food, whether it’s from Cuba, Mexico, or El Salvador. Even though we all speak Spanish, we have different dialects and it’s great to get together to talk about these things and the contributions we make!

Protect Yourself from Grinches This Holiday Season! Navigating

Cybersecurity Threats over the Holidays

As the holiday season approaches, the spirit of giving fills the air. Be Warned! This time of year also brings a surge in cybersecurity threats!

Cybergrinches are known to exploit the holidays, making it crucial for all of us to vigilant about potential risks, particularly phishing attacks and credit card scams.

Phishing Attacks

Phishing tricks people into revealing sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords, or credit card numbers. This is typically done through deceptive emails, messages, or websites that appear legitimate.

During the upcoming months, you might receive emails related to gift orders, charity donations, or holiday travel. These emails often come from seemingly trustworthy sources, making it easy for you to overlook warning signs, such as:

• Fake Shipping Notifications: Emails claiming that a package is on the way, prompting users to click on malicious website links.

• Holiday Discounts and Promotions: Deals that are too good to be true, encouraging you to enter personal information.

• Charity Scams: Messages soliciting donations for fake charities.

• Suspicious Senders: Check email addresses carefully! Criminals often use addresses that seem legitimate but contain small discrepancies.

• Generic Greetings: Phishing emails that use generic greetings like "Dear Customer."

• Urgency and Fear Tactics: Emails that create a sense of urgency, prompting quick action.

• Poor Grammar and Spelling: Many phishing attempts contain grammar errors or awkward phrasing.

Credit Card Scams

With an increase in online shopping during the holidays, there is a spike in credit card scams, such as fradulent websites, phishing emails from financial institutions, and skimming, where criminals use devices at the point-of-sale to capture card information.

To safeguard against credit card scams, consider the following:

• Use Secure Websites: Ensure that the website URL starts with "https://" before entering any payment information.

• Use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): If a website supports MFA, make sure you are using it! MFA substantially increases the security of your account.

• Monitor Financial Statements: Regularly check bank and credit card statements for unauthorized transactions.

• Limit Personal Information Sharing: Be cautious about sharing credit card information over the phone or through email, especially with

To stay safe from cybersecurity threats year round, employees should adopt the following best practices:

1. Educate Yourself: Attend cybersecurity training sessions to stay updated on the latest threats and defensive strategies.

2. Report Suspicious Activity: Report any suspicious emails or messages to IT immediately.

3. Use Strong, Unique Passwords: Implement strong passwords and consider using a password manager to keep track of them.

4. Enable Two-Factor Authentication: Wherever possible, enable twofactor authentication to add an extra layer of security to accounts.

5. Be Cautious with Public Wi-Fi: Avoid conducting sensitive transactions over public Wi-Fi networks, which can be easily intercepted.

Protect Your Eyes with Prescription Safety Glasses

If you wear prescription eyeglasses, you can get a FREE pair of standard Prescription Safety Glasses or Over-the-Glasses (OTG) safety wear courtesy of Xylem Kendall!

We require the use of safety glasses with side protection for all jobs to shield your eyes from impact hazards like branches or wood chips as well as dust, dirt, and chemicals.

Employees who need prescription glasses are required to wear safety glasses. Through our Safety Eyewear Program, you have a choice of wearing OTG safety glasses or prescription safety glasses. Your area Safety Specialist can provide OTGs, which easily fit over your eyeglasses.

Your second choice is to wear prescription safety glasses.

Tree Felling Safety in TN

If you’d like to order a free pair of prescription safety glasses, just take the following steps:

1. Email or call Kim Phillips, Safety Logistics Coordinator, with your request. She will send you a completed authorization form.

2. Take the form AND your current eyeglass prescription to a participating eyewear vendor, usually LensCrafters or Target. Kim will help you find the most convenient location.

3. At the store, you’ll get fitted for a standard pair of single vision or bifocal safety glasses at no cost to you.

Trifocals, progressive lenses, and optional add-ons, such as polarization or anti-reflective coating incur additional fees paid by the employee. Pricing information is included on the authorization form.

It is critically important that crew members wear the proper eye protection as eye injuries can be severe, painful, and permanent. If you need to wear prescription glasses, we encourage you to take advantage of the free Safety Eyewear Program.

Safety Specialists Tyler Blankenship, Josh Woods, Kyle Farris, and Trainer James Wendt conducted comprehensive tree felling safety training in August for BrightRidge, a TN-based utility customer. More than 50 linemen, managers, and the BrightRidge Chief Operating Officer Rob Arnold participated.

In a Facebook post, Arnold commented, “I personally want to give my appreciation to Kendall and the team for coming to do this training! The training was well received by our crews and appreciated by many!

We appreciate your commitment to safety of not only your own employees but ours as well. Tree cutting is one of the most dangerous jobs in the utility business and we thank you for providing your experts to make us better!”

In Their Own

Above and Beyond!

“I just wanted to let you know how impressed I am with your company. I live in Berkeley County, SC in Bonneau. Your company came by and trimmed trees...not only did they clean up; they made sure to get extra limbs that were stuck in the bush and trimmed off branches that were left hanging. I think they did a great job and went above and beyond what I would expect.”

Thank you to the crew members: General Foreperson Joshua Floyd,  Climbers Joey Garrett and Billy Williamson, and Foreperson Johnny Williamson.

Two Happy Customers in James Island, SC

From Greg K: The tree crew came to our street today. They were very curious and worked out a plan that did the job and made our trees look great. They cleaned everything up. What a great group of guys you have working for you. Jairo Samayoa made the job a success and his guys were absolutely great and worked safely. I was a safety manager for 25 years and he and his crew were top notch.

From Trent K: Your crews have been working diligently over the last month doing line clearances in our area. Today is the morning after storm Helene passed through and I fully believe because of your crews and company we didn’t lose power in the storm. Thank you for proactively pruning the trees and keeping my family safe and comfortable.

P.S. My kids love to watch the crews work and at the end of the day as they leave, my kids wave and pump their arms to get a horn honk!

Own Words

Short and Sweet

I live on County Line Road in Hebron, Indiana. Your tree trimmers working for NIPSCO did a beautiful job along my property. Thank you! Please tell the crew!

Region 4 Travel Crew: Climbers Luis Bruno, Jorge Sanchez, Juan Hernandez, Homero Gomez, Jose Hernandez, and William Vasquez; General Foreperson Oscar Hernandez; and Trainer Sean Motte.

Kudos from Both DEMCO and its Customer

A utility customer sent the following email to DEMCO:

“I live in Wakefield, West Feliciana. The employees trimming trees have done an (excellent job) trimming and cleaning up in our area, including highway 61. They have been courteous and helpful when every time I have had to pass. Please express my thanks to those responsible. We also have had excellent service with power outages. All is greatly appreciated.”

A DEMCO representative forwarded the message to Eder Maldonado, General Foreperson and Supervisor Stephen Authement, with praise for the crew, stating:

“I know you guys have a thankless job sometimes, so we want to pass this along to show you that members are often watching you work… Any experience they have with you is an experience they have with DEMCO. That said, it means a lot to us to know that you are taking care of our rights of way and serving our members in a respectful, impactful manner.

Keep up the good work!”

Thank you to the outstanding crew – Forepersons Arturo Galan and Jaime Lugo Montalvo, and Aerial Lift Trimmer Samuel Ocegueda.

Really Professional and Very Respectful

“It’s my pleasure to pass along a commendation of the work done by Sam Hazelgreen (Foreperson) and his crew (Aerial LIft Trimmers David Duncan and Hunter Gerstman) for the tree work they did for Cobb EMC. I called in an order for a dead pine tree near the line, and Sam came out to the house and pointed out that another pine-beetle tree was actually more vulnerable than the first one. I hadn’t even noticed that one was dead.

It took them two days to get both trees, but they did it and you can’t even tell they were here. They were really professional and very respectful. They worked hard, but they just gave me the impression that they LOVED what they were doing. All of them are a credit to Kendall and to Cobb EMC.”

Storm Restoration Still Underway

Xylem Kendall is incredibly proud of the hundreds of crew members who assisted in restoration efforts across multiple states in the aftermath of Hurricanes Debby, Francine, Helene, and Milton.

With more than 2,000 members of our workforce deployed, our company’s response for Hurricanes Helene and Milton were our largest mobilization efforts to date. We are still actively working in a couple of states to help restore utility service due to those devastating storms.

Both local and travel crews have done an outstanding job clearing downed trees and limbs, often under hazardous conditions, to bring normalcy to the millions of people affected.

Every offense needs a great defense -- and we certainly have strong players that can tackle any problem, epecially emergency response logistics! Our operational teams, including Central Office, Fleet Services, Human Resources, and Safety work tirelessly to ensure our field crews have the resources and manpower needed to do their jobs safely and effectively while on storm response.

Equally important are the Finance and Payroll staff, including Contract Specialists. These team members verify that our billing and compensation practices are accurate, which becomes more complex when crews travel to assist in storm recovery efforts.

We thank ALL employees and commend your hard work and dedication to support our utility clients and their customers during these challenging times. Even more so, we appreciate how well you uphold our core values to support one another.

CDL Program is a Win-Win

Q&A with Tim Haynes, CDL Training Coordinator

Q: Why did the company start the CDL training program and who developed it?

A: It began as an initiative to increase the number of qualified drivers needed to get the job done. I developed our program. I have a background in CDL training and safety as an instructor for a school in North Carolina. The program is approved by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Organization, which means it meets both federal and state requirements.

Q: How does it work?

A: The first step is to take the two-day CDL class. We offer classes in all states that we have crews. Trainers include me, Brian Presley, and David Waldrup. Materials are available in English and Spanish.

Once the driver passes the class, they go to their local DMV to take a knowledge test and air brake test to get a CDL permit.

The next step is to study the pre-trip manual and prepare for the DMV skills test by working with one of our 75 CDL field instructors. They help ensure the driver has mastered things like backing maneuvers and air brakes.

For more information about the CDL program or upcoming classes, contact Tim Haynes at thaynes@xylemtree.com.

As a DMV CDL examiner, I conduct the DMV skills test in Hamlet, North Carolina. In most cases, the employee travels to Hamlet for the skills test (at no cost to the employee). However, sometimes the drivers will test at their state DMV to get their license instead.

After passing, the driver goes to the local DMV, which will verify the driver’s test status via its Commercial Skills Test Information Management System. DMV will then issue the CDL directly to the driver.

Q: Who is eligible?

A: The program is open to anyone in the field.

Q: Is the program successful?

A: Yes, it's been very successful. Typically, a school-based CDL program would take 4-6 weeks and cost upwards of $6,000 per person. Our program is streamlined and much less expensive.

We’ve held 40 classes since the program started for more than 300 crew members. To date, 97 employees obtained the CDL.

What’s great about the program is there’s no cost to take the class, get the permit, or get the license – the company pays all of those fees.
