Commander’s Desk In this issue of The Arbor, you’ll be able to catch up on what your friends in other chapters across the country have been up to and perhaps it will inspire you to expand your circle of friends and join them at an upcoming event. As your Grand Commander, I try to visit each chapter every year or two to get to know the great people who are the Brotherhood of the Knights of the Vine and to work with and encourage those in leadership.

It’s always exciting to be able to report to you when we see chapters growing and I’m pleased to be able to share that our chapter in Arizona is being reinvigorated and that the North Carolina chapter continues with its rebuilding. Trish and I had the opportunity to travel to North Carolina and meet with Jeff Price, Lisa Tillis and Ron and Margy Natalie last October and offer support and suggestions on their efforts. You’ll find an article from both of these chapters in the following pages.

Also in October, in conjunction with the Grand Council Meeting, I was in Monterey to attend the Monterey Peninsula Chapter’s Pier Party at Pebble Beach. It was great to see so many friends and to have 6 commanders (not pictured Ernie Grossman) and other national officers from all over the country come together for this premier event. Gathering with the Austin Chapter for a Fall evening dinner cruise on Lady Bird Lake was another perfect opportunity to see what makes us so strong … it’s definitely the passionate people we call friends.

I had the honor in February to attend the Tennessee Assemblage and raise Bob Bennett to Chapter Commander. He follows Tom Webb who continues to serve as our national Grand Administrative Officer.

Looking ahead we have our annual meeting hosted this year by the Lake Tahoe Region Chapter from May 2 – 5 and, beyond that, is the first ever FICB International Wine Tasting and Rating Challenge planned and hosted by our Finland Chapter. About 100 attendees are expected and it is sure to be memorable. We hope to see many of you there!

Each issue of The Arbor features a story in a Q & A style that gives an opportunity to get to know some of our Supreme Knights and Supreme Ladies. In this issue, writer Master Lady Nan McCreary has captured the essence of dedication and determination of Supreme Knight and Supreme Lady Ed and Susan Auler who are the founders of Fall Creek Winery in the Texas Hill Country and who were among those who founded our Austin KOV Chapter. I know you’ll enjoy getting to know them.

Grand Assemblage Ceremony

The Grand Assemblage Ceremony of the KOV Finland Chapter was this year held in historic Restaurant Laterna next to the central square of Tampere on a beautiful and sunny Saturday. The Ladies, Knights and guests were seated in the Jugend Hall to follow the ceremony which was also honored by international guests from Wine Brotherhoods of South Korea, Madeira and Estonia.

The ceremony was opened by Master Commander Arttu Kalli. The first festivity was led by Supreme Knight Timo Jokinen who appointed Mr. Matti Malkamaki as the Master of the Guard. The ceremony was then continued by the Assemblage Ceremony during which all candidates passed their specific tasks and questions. Total of six new candidates were welcomed to join our brotherhood.

The celebrations were followed by a delicious Scandinavian 5-course dinner accompanied by perfectly matching wines from around the world. The event was also made even better by lively music performances before the international guests gave their greetings. After the formal celebrations, the guests continued to a more relaxed after party at the new wine bistro, Winebridge.

TRADITIONAL SUMMER PICNIC IN TAMPERE The weather could not have been better for the traditional summer picnic of the KOV Finland chapter. The location has been the same already for years on Nasi Park in Tampere. Ladies and Knights lined up to bring their favorite wines to share. In total we were treated with thirty bottles of delicious wines from around the world. We even sampled a rare Japanese red wine.

This year our Master Scribe Sami Jokinen and Gentle Lady Patricia Kuukasjärvi hosted the gastronomic delicacies. We were spoilt with a mouth-watering BBQ feast of slow cooked delicious brisket, ribs, cheeses and salads. The tremendous dinner in the park ended with Sami’s and Patricia’s specialty – sweet fresh strawberry cream cake.

Nasi Park in Tampere made for the perfect backdrop for the delicious BBQ buffet where thirty bottles of wine were also brought to the the wine buffet for everyone to enjoy!

North Carolina Chaper

Moving Forward The re-energized North Carolina Chapter of the Knights of the Vine has made significant strides in recent months and is moving forward with new and innovative ideas designed to attract new members and retain existing members.

Master Commander Jeff Price and Chapter Secretary/Treasurer Lisa Tillis were invited to attend the Seventh Annual Southeastern United Grape and Wine Symposium held at North Carolina’s Surry Community College on November 7. The NC KOV was an official Educational Sponsor of the event and the Chapter used this occasion to distribute information about the KOV to attendees at the Symposium. The Chapter also delivered a $500.00 scholarship award to Eric Krans, a very deserving student who is enrolled in the enology/viticulture program at the College.

The Chapter decided to honor one of its founding members, Dr. Charles W. Averre, by naming the scholarship award after him. Dr. Averre, a retired plant pathologist from NC State University, devoted much of his work as a college professor and research scientist to assist vineyard owners in North Carolina to improve the growing of wine grapes in the state.

Several members and prospective members of the Chapter attended the North Carolina Fine Wines Gala held at the Millennium Center in Winston-Salem on February 16. The 2019 North Carolina Fine Wines Awards Gala is now in its third year and has become known as North

Carolina’s premiere wine dinner. The occasion served as the platform for the announcement of the vineyards and wines that make up the 2019 NC Fine Wines Showcase!

These are the top 12 wines as selected by Advanced Sommeliers from the Court of Master Sommeliers. All of the wines are the dry European styled wines that can be found on wine menus around the world. The event also serves as a celebration of North Carolina’s $2 billion wine industry and why the Yadkin Valley AVA was voted one of the 10 best regions in the country for wine. After a reception that featured the best of North Carolina wines, guests were treated to a delicious sixcourse dinner, with each course carefully paired with a fine North Carolina wine.

In the coming months, the Chapter has plans to host wine tastings and other great events. The Chapter is moving forward!

In Memoriam

Dr. Charles W. Averre, III, 86, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, February 9, 2019. Born on June 6, 1932, Charles was a Professor of Plant Pathology at NC State University from 1968 – 1995 when he retired as Professor Emeritus. Charles was instrumental in the research that led to the revival of North Carolina’s wine grape industry and was a founding member of the North Carolina Chapter of the Brotherhood of the Knights of the Vine. Charles held the rank of Master Knight, bestowed upon him by The Brotherhood in recognition of his service.

His passion for education and mentorship was evident in his actions that included a generous donation to the NC Chapter of the Knights of the Vine’s Scholarship Fund (now called the Dr. Charles W. Averre III Scholarship), to support programs in Viticulture and Enology at the State’s various universities and community colleges. Dr. Averre’s donation to the NC KOV Scholarship Fund will ensure the long-term financial viability of the fund.

Lake Tahoe

Intimate Assemblage at Tahoe Donner Sunday, October 14, 2018, a beautiful, clear, crisp fall day, ushered in the 18th annual Lake Tahoe Region Assemblage. Seventy members, guests, and inductees gathered at the intimate and lovely Lodge at Tahoe Donner, Truckee, California.

We were greeted by Master Commander Ernest Grossman and his lovely wife, Master Lady and Master Secretary Margaret Lewicki.

The evening began with “Milly” Champagne, Grand Cru, Brut Reserve which was the perfect accompaniment to Belgian endive with grapes, Point Reyes Blue Cheese and candied pecans as well as the assorted delicious crostini.

Chik Brenneman, Master Commander of the Chancellery Chapter, joined the Grand Processional as did Master Commander Emeritus Roland Medel of the San Francisco Chapter. Our Master Heralder, Larry Axelrod initiated the proceedings. Master Commander Ernest Grossman declared the Assemblage open—the signal for the festivities to begin. He also welcomed special guests from the Chancellery Chapter: Polly Brenneman, Charge d’Affaires; Suzanne Oppergard, Master Vice Commander; and Stan Oppergard, Master of Ceremonies.

course of petite filet with Port Wine Demi, scalloped potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Remarkably, each two inch thick filet was served virtually simultaneously to 70 people and each steak was cooked to medium rare perfection. Yes, Chef Orlady did tell us his secret…..

Finally, dessert was berry cobbler accompanied by Gunther’s (from Sacramento for those of you who aren’t familiar with this long time delicious purveyor of home made ice cream) cinnamon ice cream. To top this off, Madeira-Bual,10 year oak cask aged, Cossart Gordon was the perfect accompaniment.

Knight Hank Lewis, Treasurer, announced that we were not only solvent, but also that the Lake Tahoe Chapter is making a $1,500 contribution to the UC Davis Department of Viticulture and Enology; a gift that Chik Brenneman graciously accepted.

Ernest Grossman introduced Roland Medel, who recently relocated to Lake Tahoe with his wife, Bonnie, and welcomed him to serve on our Cadre. Ernie also introduced and welcomed to the Cadre Gentle Lady Veronica Kaufman, who recently was unable to say “no” to Ernie in accepting the position of Scribe.

Six candidates for induction to the Lake Tahoe Chapter were introduced by their sponsors and, of course, were subject to the rigorous tests required by the Knights of the Vine. These new members are: Joyce Grunauer, introduced by Master Lady Margaret Lewicki; Lew Madden, welcomed by Gary Boxeth; Dale Kuehne introduced by Knight Jim Leidigh; Joe Phillips welcomed by Gentle Lady Susan Horst; Doug Van Howd introduced

by Claire and Dave Christensen and, finally, Sharon Parsons—enologist and wine expert with a blog that is comprehensive and informative—was introduced by Master Lady, Stephanie Harris. We don’t have enough pages in The Arbor to review the incredibly distinguished and interesting careers and contributions all our new Knights and Gentle Ladies bring to our fortunate Lake Tahoe Chapter.

The grand feast was beautifully prepared by Executive Chef, Lew Orlady. The first course, grilled chipotle and honey glazed prawns with arugula, tomato, avocado and cilantro lime vinaigrette was perfectly paired with a 2015 Adega de Moncao Alvarinho. The 2016 Les Abeille de Colombo Côtes du Rhone complemented the second

In Memoriam We lost two gracious, gentle souls this past year.

Judy Henry, who, with Ray, started as members of Chancellery, and moved to our Chapter many years ago; and Jim Moore, who retained his membership in the Monterey Chapter, but encouraged his lovely wife, Renate, to join our Chapter. He often said that he had the best of both worlds.

Amazingly, both were passionate members yet neither drank alcohol. They loved the camaraderie.

So we open a bottle of Ariel and toast to our good fortune for having known them.

Master Commander Ernie Grossman and his lovely wife, Gentle Lady Margaret Lewicki chose Sunday, December 9 for their annual Ecumenical KOV Holiday Brunch. As usual, snow was on the ground but Ernie’s remarkable weather karma produced a lovely, sunny day for his and Margaret’s 80+ guests to gather at their beautiful home in Truckee.

The test to determine whether our new inductees could distinguish between water and wine was brief as it was clear by then that they could indeed tell what was Prosecco and what was water!

And so it was as we came to a close for the year with wishes for all of a Happy Chanukah/Hannukah/Hanukkah and a very Merry Christmas along with Lake Tahoe Chapter’s best wishes for a Healthy, Happy, and wine filled 2019!

KOV members and friends came from not only Truckee and environs, but also Incline Village and Reno, Nevada as well as Sacramento, Auburn, and Roseville, California. The Grossman home was decorated for both Chanukah (pick your spelling!) as well as Christmas. Our Maître de Cuisine, Dr. Mai Nguyen, orchestrated the incredibly delicious offerings we have come to look forward to. With the help of Master Lady Stephanie Harris’ organizational skills and Knight Richard Mackler’s home prepared corned beef as well as plentiful Prosecco and Sangria, preparations went off without a hitch.

In addition to ham and baked succulent salmon, corned beef and smoked white fish, latkes were prepared before our eyes and better than any that can be tasted anywhere, Mai and her team provided homemade hummus and an assortment of hors d’oeuvres as well as roasted vegetables and many other goodies. New this year, irresistible to this author, were the homemade cheese blintzes made with homemade crêpes.

The KOV contingent was also treated to the induction of three new members who had been unable to attend the annual Assemblage; Dr. Jerry Flanzer, Dr. Lee Freeman (both of whom have,

Nation’s Capital

“In nothing have the habits of the palate more decisive influence than in our relish of wines.” ~ Thomas Jefferson, 1818 The Nation’s Capital Chapter of the Knights of the Vine honors Thomas Jefferson in the fall each year as our third President and the first person to plant vineyards in the United States of America - right here in the Commonwealth of Virginia, at his home in Monticello.

We held our annual Thomas Jefferson Dinner at the Field and Main Restaurant in Marshall, Virginia. Joining us at the celebration were Mr. Jim Law and Ms. Shari Avenius of Linden Vineyards. Jim Law is a Master of Terroir and has been making world class Virginia wines for over 30 years. Shari Avenius is the general manager of Linden Vineyards and the owner and winegrower of Avenius Vineyard. Master Heralder Walt Rachele and Forever First Guest Pat Valas have been collecting Linden wines for nearly as long and opened their cellars for an All-Linden dinner. This generosity convinced Jim to join us for the evening and speak about his wines. Jim Law was “pleasantly pleased to be able to taste all three of the 2009s side by side.”

The owner of the Field and Main, Neil Wavra and the Master Chef Anthony Nelson both graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York in 2004. They provide farm to table cuisine with the emphasis on showcasing produce and wine from the local farmers and vintners of Virginia. Neil is certified by the Court of Master Sommeliers and is the recipient of the Commanderie de Bordeaux Wine Scholarship, the Kopf Foundation Wine Excellence Scholarship and is a real friend to the vineyards of Virginia with his extensive selection of Virginia wines.

The evening started with a toast of a 2017 Rosé, a great wine reminiscent of picnics or al fresco dining. It was an ideal time to reacquaint with old friends and meet some new ones. The first course was a scallop crudo with persimmon vinegar paired with a grateful and generous 2016 Sauvignon Blanc. Next was a hearth toasted squash with feta served with a beautifully sculpted 2016 Viognier. It was utterly fresh and delicious. The third course was an absolutely decadent sautéed duck breast with baby red and fingerling potatoes paired with two different wines; a lovely 2009 (Bordeaux style) Boisseau featuring Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot and a 2009 Hardscrabble Red (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc). The next course was an equally impressive Virginia Ruby Veal New York Strip with fire roasted beets served with a 2009 Avenius Red (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot). To finish the evening, Chef Anthony treated us to a vanilla cake with persimmon puree served with a 2016 Late Harvest Petit Manseng, demi-sec style.

The food and wine were exceptional as was the venue and the embellishments of the Knights and Gentle Ladies of the Nation’s Capital Chapter. The gala was a huge success as we celebrate another year appreciating the gastronomy and terroir of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the home of Thomas Jefferson. continued >>>

In Memoriam Gordon Murchie The National Office is saddened to report the passing of Supreme Knight Gordon Murchie on March 16, 2019.

Gordon joined the Nation’s Capital Chapter of The Brotherhood of the Knights of the Vine in 1991.

In 1998, he was elevated to the prestigious rank of Supreme Knight. Gordon is survived by his wife of 63 years, Master Lady Anita Murchie, and their children Scott Murchie and Tia Murchie-Beyma.

Gordon was featured in The Arbor magazine last year in an article written by Nan McCreary. Below is an excerpt from this article that describes his connections and contributions to with wine industry.

From 1989 to 2008, he served continuously as president of the Virginia-based Vinifera Wine Growers Association, which was one of the first wine trade associations on the east coast, and from 1999 to August 2005, he also served as executive director of the VirGordon Murchie, Supreme Knight of the Brotherhood ginia Wineries Association. SUMMER PARTY

As guests gathered at the bars and tasted some of the wine offerings, they began comparing their summer trips, children’s college plans and the upcoming University of Texas football season. In fact, a stellar homefield game with the University of Southern California was slated for two days after the party and many armchair quarterbacks offered their opinions about the Longhorns’ revitalized running game. Their abilities to evaluate on-field talent and plot explosive plays grew more prescient and insightful as the wine glasses were emptied.

Soon, the elaborate food buffet was served in the kitchen and guests filled their plates and sought out places to sit and enjoy their food. Many old friendships were rekindled, and new ones bloomed during the dinner.

Halfway through the festivities, Master Commander Jerry Gatlin clinked a glass and the crowd hushed as he presented party hosts William and Cecilia with an engraved decanter to express the group’s thanks for allowing the knights and gentle ladies to attend an event in their home.

All too soon, it was time to go home— and as guests waited for valets to bring their cars around, one enthusiastic soul exclaimed, ‘Per Vitem, Ad Vitam!”

Austin

On September 12, chapter members and guests of the Knights of the Vine Austin Chapter gathered at the gorgeous lakeside home of Dr. William Deaton and Cecilia Neuhaus Deaton to celebrate the end of summer and the start of the fall social season. Located on Island Cove, an exclusive gated community alongside Lake Austin, the home was a magnificent setting for the party. It was a balmy and clear night featuring “Chamber of Commerce” weather and many of the partygoers ambled into the backyard to marvel at the hosts’ private canal-like waterway.

Fall Party at Mount Bonnell Estate On the post-election night of Wednesday, November 7, the Austin chapter of Knights of the Vine hosted a party in a stunningly modern home in the Mount Bonnell neighborhood.

The spacious, airy, white-walled, multi-story home rightfully received many compliments as the crowd of Knights and Gentle Ladies roamed freely around all the rooms, marveling at the design and layout. A number of large modern paintings were displayed on the walls, making a striking backdrop for the happy crowd’s sampling of fine wines from the chapter’s cellar.

With the timing of the party on the day after the midterm elections, commentary was rampant and as the wine continued to flow, the insights were soon rivaling those being presented on any major network. Several prospective Knights and Gentle Ladies were in the crowd and they joined in on the conversations with gusto. The weather held for the event and it was a crystal clear Texas night as the partygoers headed for their cars.

As one couple drove off, they said goodbye with a hearty “Per Vitem, Ad Vitam!”

FALL BOAT PARTY ON

LADY BIRD LAKE

The weather gods looked with favor upon the Austin Knights of the Vine on Sunday, October 14. Although rains had been forecast for the Hill Country and Austin, the skies were clear as 59 KOV members and guests climbed aboard the Lone Star Riverboat for their evening cruise. The temperature was perfect as the paddle-wheeler pulled away from the dock and soon the partygoers were falling into conversational groups.

The topics of conversation were varied and as the wine flowed, the animation of the crowd increased.

One hoped-for treat as the boat neared the Congress Avenue Bridge was a nocturnal flight of Mexican Free-Tailed Bats, but unfortunately the night-flyers decided not to make an appearance. However, that didn’t dampen spirits as partygoers heaped their plates with spicy and flavorful goodies from the delicious Mexican food buffet catered

by PoK-e-Jo’s. The skyline of Austin was gorgeous as the boat floated past it, and some of the downtown dwellers in the party’s crowd were kept busy naming buildings.

Special guests at the event were Grand Commander Buddy and Trish Hagner, who had driven in from Houston to attend the party. They couldn’t resist the chance to enjoy the lake cruise and visit with their Austin friends.

All too soon, the vessel pulled into the dock and it was time to disembark -- and as Knights and Gentle Ladies were saying their goodbyes, one enthusiastic soul exclaimed, “Per Vitem, Ad Vitam!”

As the 2017 wildfires engulfed the vineyards of Northern California, the loss of life and property was paramount. The fires killed 43, destroyed thousands of homes and buildings, including five wineries, and scorched more than 100,000 acres before being totally contained. But, behind these grim statistics, was yet another troubling aftermath of the fires: the loss of grapes — and ultimately wine — because of smoke taint.

Smoke taint is rather complex, but understanding its effects is important to winemakers and consumers alike.

Smoke taint occurs when volatile phenols in wildfire smoke permeate the skin of the grape. Once absorbed, the unpleasant aromas associated with smoke rapidly bond with the sugar inside to form molecules called glycosides. Initially this process renders the phenols no longer volatile, which means you cannot smell or taste the smokiness. However, later during processing, as natural enzymes and acids in juice and wine break apart the glycosides, the phenols become volatile again, and are noticeable and release the smokiness back into the wine. The flavors may be described as “smoky,” “bacon,” “campfire” and “ashtray.”

Smoke taint can result with as little as 30 minutes of exposure. Grapes are most susceptible after veraison (color change for red grapes) to harvest. Because the compounds penetrate the skin, the contamination simply cannot be washed off. Experts are divided on whether certain varietals are more susceptible to smoke taint than others. Some claim that varieties with thicker skins (such as Cabernet Sauvignon) are more resistant, but others have disputed that claim. The good news is that there is no evidence that smoke taint stays in the vines to carry phenols over into the next year.

And, fortunately, there are no health hazards associated with wines affected by smoke taint.

While the damage from smoke taint in the 2017 fires could have been worse — more than 90 percent of the grapes had already been harvested when the fires erupted — it was a wake-up call to winemakers in the area, especially with climate change and the increasingly dry conditions that can cause fast-spreading fires. “This is all new to us this year and it has transformed the wine industry in California,” Tom Eddy, owner of Tom Eddy Winery in Napa and KOV Master Knight, told the Arbor Magazine. “In California, we really only had one major wildfire event previously that caused problems and that was in 2008. At that time, we as winemakers were somewhat naïve and thought, ‘Well, it’s just an act of God and it happens,’ but we didn’t do much about it. We tried to remove it later when we discovered it.

Some winemakers threw it away, some tried to blend it out, which they could do to some extent, and some just made it and bottled it and called it Barbeque Red.” Eddy, whose winery was at the epicenter of the Tubbs Fire, lost 80 percent of his 2017 wine, representing a $2.5 million loss.

According to Eddy, now everybody is aware of smoke taint and how it can damage the finished product.

Researchers at top enology programs in the U.S., including those at University of California at Davis and Washington State University, are investigating ways to evaluate the risk of smoke taint. Research institutions or private companies also offer services to winemakers where they can test for levels of volatile phenols in grapes and wine. Winemakers, too, are experimenting with processes such as reverse osmosis or fining and filtering to remove volatile phenols, but these processes all compromise the quality of the wine.

One of the big issues, Eddy said, is how smoke taint is affecting insurance underwriting in the wine industry.

this first-hand. “Right now, the industry is in turmoil in dealing with insurance claims,” he stated. “Because smoke taint has never been an issue, policies are not specific. If smoke ruined the grapes in the field, then that’s not wine; it’s a crop and will be covered by crop insurance, if the winery has it. If wineries file a claim for wine that was picked before the fire and lose the juice while it’s sitting in tanks in the winery, then that’s another matter. It’s very difficult for insurance companies to come up with a black and white scale on the degree of smoke taint because it’s so subjective.”

Clearly, the California wildfires of 2017 — and more in 2018 — are changing the wine industry. Everyone

from scientists to winery owners to insurance companies is addressing smoke taint, how to prepare for it, and how to compensate for it, both financially and in the winemaking process. Despite these problems, Eddy believes the impact is minimal for the consumer. “Only a tiny, tiny percentage of wines were impacted in terms of quality, and those that were significantly damaged were thrown away. Contrary to a lot of the publicity, Napa and Sonoma counties did not burn up.” In fact, said Eddy, 2017 was a very good vintage, with even temperatures, a long season, riper fruit, and better flavors and color development. “If you drink 2017 Napa Cab three years from now,” he said, “you will never smell smoke. It was a great vintage.”

KOSSAROSA The Mississippi Chapter’s summer event was A Taste of Italy held in August. The Kossarosa Lake House of Master Commander Tom Kossen and his wife, Master Secretary, Connie Kossen, was the perfect setting for a wonderful evening filled with Italian foods and wine.

Guests were welcomed with an Aperol Spritz, a favorite of Italians for hot summer afternoons. Other wines enjoyed were Parva Res 2017, Vitas Chardonnay, 2014, Villa Giada “Suri” Barbera d’Asti, 2016 and Poggio al Tuffo Toxcana Rompicolla, 2015. Food, prepared by different area restaurants included a traditional lasagna and bowtie pasta alfredo with shrimp.

us with a beautiful, sunny, 80-degree Mississippi afternoon! Hosted by Janet and Curtis Whittington in their plantation-style home, Woodbine, guests were greeted on the veranda with a Sparkling Wine, a French Rosé

by Veuve du Vernay, followed by a wonderful Buena Vista Chardonnay. It was really too pretty to go inside! Christmas carols, beautiful decorations, and a delicious display of fine foods prepared by different members brought us into the home which was filled with beautiful antiques. Red wines poured included a Cabernet Sauvignon by Earthquake from the Michael David Winery and the Old Vine Zinfandel “Cigar” from the Consentino Winery in Lodi. In what has become a tradition for the Mississippi Chapter, for our last tasting of the year, we enjoyed wines new to the Mississippi Catalogue. It was a great afternoon!

The second half of 2018 rocked merrily along for the Gulf Coast Chapter with two exciting first-time events and an outstanding Christmas party to finish the year strong.

In August, Club 875 at Biloxi’s elegant Beau Rivage Resort & Casino was the setting for a wine tasting hosted

by Master Sommelier Will Costello of Bien Nacido and Solomon Hills Estate Vineyards. Wines served included Solomon Hills Chardonnay and Pinot Noir; and Bien Nacido Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah. We enjoyed hor d’ourves that complimented each flight of wine served and had a chance to learn more about the wines from the vineyard’s Master Sommelier himself.

September brought a lovely late summer evening cruise as members and guests boarded the Betsy Ann Paddleboat, one of America’s last remaining true sternwheel paddleboats. A two hour sunset cruise off shore on the Mississippi Gulf Coast gave members and guests time to socialize, eat and enjoy some great wines that were brought by members for this BYOW cruise.

“We had a nice breeze, gorgeous sunset, delicious food and wine .. and a chance to talk with new potential members about why they should join this great brotherhood,” said our Master Commander John Boothby.

And he was certainly right!

Ending the year with a fun Christmas party is always a treat. Held at the beautiful Ocean Springs home of Knight Lauren Timmons and his lady Gwendolyn, it was really special this year. Members showed up in their festive Christmas attire that made for some fun conversation at this festive party as we recounted the year’s events and made plans for another great year ahead.

“We’re not only savoring wines and learning about them, but creating memories each time we come together,” Boothby said. “2019 will be just as memorable as we add new members and experience some different venues for events.” We can hardly wait!

MEMBERS IN THE NEWS GET TO KNOW KNIGHT TOM HOBDAY We would like to introduce you to Knight Tom Hobday. One of the most active people in bettering our Tahoe/Truckee community. Tom has had a most singular honor bestowed upon him. Because of his prior work on behalf of the UC Davis Medical Center and his current affiliation with the Tahoe Forest Hospital and in particular the creation of the state of the art cancer center, Tom is responsible for the Davis-Tahoe Forest Medical Partnership known as the Rural Center of Excellence for the Truckee based hospital. As a result, the Gene Upshaw Memorial Tahoe Forest Cancer Center created and funded the very prestigious Tom Hobday Medical Lectureship. We couldn’t be more proud.

Tennessee

Holidays & Happy times in

After a long, hot southern summer, the Tennessee chapter gathered in late September at the home of Knight Bob Schubert and his lady Marilyn to celebrate the beginning of fall, cooler temperatures, and wine. A trip to the Mediterranean was the theme as members and guests brought Mediterranean inspired dishes and wines of the region. Wines from Spain, France, Italy (including Sicily), Turkey, Lebanon, Israel and Greece were tasted and thoroughly enjoyed!

The delicious dishes also represented many of those countries. Bob Schubert, a chemist by profession, gave our wine education

talk on the chemistry of wine, describing the chemical reactions that turn grapes into our favorite beverage. He recommended a book, Understanding Wine Chemistry, for all to read.

The chapter reconvened in early December at the home of Master Commander Tom and Gentle Lady Beth Webb for the annual Christmas party, with a jeroboam of 2005 Eagles Trace Cabernet Sauvignon being the highlight of the evening. Knight Robert Meyer brought the jeroboam, which was supplemented with two smaller bottles of the same vintage, to accompany the beef bourguignon and festive holiday dishes brought by members. And of course, many other good wines were tasted during the evening with the appetizers. All agreed that the best way to start the holiday season is to enjoy good wine with good food with good friends, the best part of belonging to Knights of the Vine!

The Houston Chapter is fortunate, as are other chapters, to have great members who participate in our activities with ideas for events, venues, offers to host the group, on occasion provide wine from their personal cellars, donate to our fundraising efforts and, of course, attend those well-planned gatherings on a regular basis. As we hear it said, we suffer from an embarrassment of riches of many kinds. What we are richest in is friendship!

With approximately ten events each year (more if you also count the Ladies of the Knight), it can be a challenge to keep it interesting. Some events are traditions and repeated every year while others are reserved for every few years to keep them fresh. Speaking of fresh, we are always looking for new opportunities to learn about and enjoy the one thing that is always central to our coming together …. WINE!

We draw our inspiration from the community around us and the offerings that we see; and we borrow great ideas from other chapters that we read about here in The Arbor or learn about as we travel to visit other chapters.

The options are so many!

Within the last year or so, we’ve had the chance to “tag on” to wine dinners at the Houston Petroleum Club which is on the 35th floor of a downtown Houston building with floor to ceiling windows. The lights of the city and the views to the horizon make any meal a real treat. On July 27, members attended The Wine Innovator’s Dinner. The menu and wines were selected to reflect on different wines and wine methods throughout the world and, in this case, featured South Africa, Argentina, USA, New Zealand and Australia. No one left disappointed!

Our chapter holds its annual business meeting each August and, in recent years, has gone to a full pot luck dinner with wines pulled from our KOV cellar (leftovers from other events during the prior year) which are set out for members and guests to serve themselves and take to the dinner tables. The dinner is held in a wine warehouse so while Houston summer temperatures may be in the high 90s, we are enjoying BBQ and Country Music at The Redneck 65 degrees. It is curious how, with absolutely no coordination, the food options always work out perfectly; just the right number of appetizers, salads, entrees, sides and desserts. The display is amazing! Officers are elected for the next year and chapter finances are reviewed. This year, we had the bonus of being able to actually present our check in the amount of $12,500 to Miguel Cabrera, Director of Development for the University of Houston’s Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management. A number of years ago, we established a KOV Endowment there for LEFT Leigh Ann Manz BBQ-ing the BRATZ RIGHT Raymond scholarships and that endowment is now approaching McKaskle enjoying Wine-toberfest with Leigh Ann & Wolfgang Manz $100,000 with the help of matching funds from the Hilton Foundation.

In September we had a Fun (Not Fancy) Wine Dinner at the Redneck Country Club. Yes, it is a real place and we dusted off our boots and hats; not too much of a stretch for these Texans! The live country music made the salad, brisket, chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans with bacon and pecan pie taste all the better with our Ricardo Santos El Malbec and Mandolin Chardonnay. Before leaving, it was unanimous, we WILL do this again! It was just too much fun!

As the temperatures started to cool in Houston, we gathered on November 8 at the home of Knight and Gentle Lady Lawrence and Terry Estes to enjoy wine from Childress Vineyards in North Carolina and to learn about the history of winemaking in that area. We greatly enjoyed Three White, 2014 Viognier Reserve, 2014 Meritage Reserve, 2015 Malbec, 2014 Petit Verdot and 2015 Cab Franc all while feasting on a wonderful table of foods lovingly prepared for us by our hostess Terry.

Come December you will find us at the home of Knight Lee Slataper and his lady Laura for our Holiday Buffet Wine Dinner! We tried some years ago to give them a break and move the December event and there was such an outcry from everyone that we were “forced” to gently persuade Lee and Laura that it looked like they had become the “permanent” hosts for this annual event. Their generosity is legendary and so it was that the tradition has continued for, lo, these many years! This year our food was catered by Café Benedicte and our wines were from South America. Our Ladies of the Knight also got together twice in the second half of 2018; the first occasion was hosted by Gentle Lady Tyri Centanni at her beautiful home at the end of October so, naturally, the ladies were encouraged to ad-“DRESS” their fears and almost everyone showed up in costume and bringing goodies that were definitely creative as well as tasty. The names of the wines all tied back to the thought of goblins and witches. A special treat was having Tyri entertain us with her guitar playing and beautiful voice. In December, we returned for the third year in a row to the home of Coach Wade and Laurie Phillips, hosted by Master Ladies Nan McCreary and Trish Hagner. As we gathered on a Monday night with a Super Bowl trophy as the table’s centerpiece (Super Bowl 50 winning Broncos!), while the ladies enjoyed holiday themed wines, a number of the husbands (who normally do not come to the ladies’ events) were upstairs in the theatre watching Monday night football and pigging out on barbeque!

While making new friends we all set about to discover our favorite wines as the smell of BBQ wafted over the pier. Some of the wines making an appearance this year included: Chock Rock; Comanche Cellars; Dawn’s Dream and Windy Oaks, making its first appearance at the party treating us to their very special Pinot’s, this member’s favorite of the day. When the time came to plate our lunch, we had choices of Caesar and Pasta salads by cadre member and Chef Wendy Brodie and steaks and salmon hot off our cadres’ grill.

The annual Pier Party was another sell out this year as we welcomed several members from the Chancellery, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area and Lake Tahoe Region chapters. Knights and Gentle Ladies enjoyed comradery and feasting at the historic Pebble Beach Club Pier with welcome appetizers of grilled sausage prepared by cadre members/grill masters Jack Galante, Dominic Van Nes and Phil Arnold; escargot, sautéed shrimp, and a country style pate on crostini with dijon mustard and cornichon prepared by Chef Didier Duterte and Sommelier Coleen Mani of Bistro Moulin; a generous cheese plate with Humboldt Fog goat, St Augr blue, and an aged Manchego presented by Cadre member and Chef Wendy Brodie.

Dessert was made by A Sweet Affair with a large selection to balance out the day. Music was of the dancing variety and there was no shortage of dancers this year. Many new friends were made as we wound down another great year.

First Fridays, our new monthly meet up opportunity at local tasting rooms, started strong with members getting together in 2018 at Dawn’s Dream, Manzoni, Comanche Cellars and Windy Oaks. With so many great wineries in our area, this should prove to be just the beginning of a new tradition. ~ Kristine Deaton 32

Annual Assemblage We convened for our 2018 Assemblage at the Los Laureles Lodge on a sunny September late afternoon.

This Carmel Valley outdoor venue provided a beautiful setting for the induction of our new members. The members and guests mingled with a reception of passed hors d’oeuvres accompanied by a Domaine Chandon, Etoile Brute. We had the pleasure of inducting eight vibrant new members. Our newest Gentle Ladies, Teresa Alberts, Sue Neale-May, and Young Seon Myong were joined by Knights, Mark Diorio, Cary Mrozowski, Warren Nishimoto, David Stewart and Merv Sutton.

They passed the test of the wine, knelt before the Commander and at the gentle application of the sword joined into our Brotherhood. As evening fell we enjoyed an al fresco dinner consisting of an Insalata Caprese served with our member Eric Wente’s selected wine; the 2016 Wente Riva Ranch, Chardonnay. This was followed by a Filet Mignon paired with Supreme Knight Jack Galante’s 2014 Cabernet. A Bernardus 2015 Soberanes Vineyard, Pinot Noir capped off the evening paired with a Chocolate Mousse Cake. Dancing ensued, wine was consumed, stories were told, and the new members, taken into the fold.

Ed & Susan Auler KOV Supreme Knight and Supreme Lady Ed and Susan Auler of the Austin, Texas Chapter, known as “The First Family of Texas Wine,” are true legends in the history of grape-growing in the state. In 1975, inspired by an extensive trip to the wine regions of France, they founded Fall Creek Vineyards near Lake Buchanan. At the time, it was only one of three commercial vineyards in the state, and the only vineyard in the Texas Hill Country. With a vision of producing world-class wines, the Aulers reached out to experts in the wine industry, including U.C. Davis professors, California and French winemakers, and André Tchelistcheff, America’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker, who became the initial consultant to Fall Creek Vineyards.

For 40-plus years, the Aulers have worked diligently to create a viable wine industry in Texas, and to disprove the naysayers who claimed it was not possible to grow quality Vitis vinifera grapes in the state. With over four decades of experimenting and trial-by-error grape-growing, they have learned to produce terroirdriven wines that win countless accolades and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with world-class wines from around the globe. Most recently, the Aulers received an “Outstanding American Wine” recognition from James Suckling, who awarded 90-plus scores to five Fall Creek Vineyards wines: Chardonnay, Tempranillo, Syrah, Mourvèdre and a GSM. Besides producing award-winning wines, the Aulers have played a key role in promoting the wines of Texas. Susan, who was recognized by “Wines & Vines”

magazine as one of the top 50 people in the wine world, founded the Texas Hill Country Wine & Food Festival in 1986. The festival continues to this day under a different name, the Austin Food & Wine Festival, and attracts thousands of visitors annually from around the world. Ed has been president of the Texas Wine and Grape Growers Association, Director of the American Vintners Association and Chairman of the Associated Wineries of Texas. As a practicing attorney, he used his legal expertise to create the “Texas Hill Country” Appellation, which was certified by Federal law in 1990.

Fall Creek Vineyards sources 100 percent of its grapes from several estate and farmer-owned vineyards around Texas. Each vineyard site has a distinct terroir that is reflected in carefully-crafted wines. Fall Creek offers tours and tastings at two locations: The Fall Creek Vineyards and Winery at Tow, adjacent to the Auler family ranch on the northwest corner of Lake Buchanan; and Fall Creek Vineyards in Driftwood, 25 minutes from downtown Austin. TA: You were pioneers in this industry. How did you know what to plant?

The Arbor (TA): Ed and Susan, tell us how you got started in the wine business.

SUSAN AULER (SA): It was the last thing we ever thought we’d be doing. Right after Ed received his law degree from the University of Texas, Ed’s father turned his ranch over to him to operate. The ranch had been in the family for four generations (our sons are the fifth). In 1973, we went to France to look at new breeds of cattle and while we were there, we decided to take some time to see the major wine regions. We had a phenomenal time. When we were driving across the South of France, I remember Ed saying, “Geographically, this looks just like the Hill Country. I wonder if anyone’s thought about growing grapes in Texas.”

ED AULER (EA): I jokingly tell people that what got this started was low cattle prices. In fact, the bottom fell out of the cattle market in the early 70s, so I figured I needed to add another crop to make the ranch profitable. When we were in Europe, I saw similarities between some of the wine regions and our area, so I decided to do some research. I learned that the Spaniards had grown grapes in the El Paso Valley along the Rio Grande 100 years before introducing vineyards in California. The vineyards thrived here, and while most wine was sacramental, there was some commerce along the Santa Fe Trail. Fearing competition, the King of Spain banned wine production in the New World.

When we started Fall Creek Vineyards, we reopened a chapter of Texas history, as with a few exceptions, no one had really tried growing vineyards where they were originally established. Had that continued, who knows what kind of a wine-producing state we’d be today.

Now we’re adding our part to it.

SA: Texas A&M helped us with our knowledge. We started with a small test plot of a quarter of an acre and grew 13 varieties, just to see what would happen.

We were very bullish on the Hill Country because of the varieties of soil composition and land masses, and we could see fabulous opportunities for grape-growing where rivers had cut through the area and created different microclimates with unique terroir. By 1980, we had gone from a quarter of an acre to two and a half acres and then to five acres and then to seven and a half acres. During this time, the California wine industry had begun to explode so we turned to the experts there and decided to plant Vitis vinifera grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. A wine writer tasted our Third Leaf Cabernet and thought it was so good that he suggested we take it to André Tchelistcheff and let him taste it.

André’s first comment was, in a heavy Russian accent, “Plant more.” André got us on the right track early on and consulted with us the last years of his life.

EA: André Tchelistcheff encouraged us to go with Vitis vinifera grapes. We had a lot of naysayers tell us what we could and couldn’t do, but we just kept planting more and experimenting with different varieties. Some say it’s too hot here, but we learned that Vitis vinifera was born in the Middle East— where Iran, Iraq and Turkey come together – and the temperatures there are the same as they are here. The idea that it’s too hot here is a myth. Grapes have a heat-shock gene and can adapt to brutally hot temperatures, even hotter than here. If they’re grown in a cool climate, that gene doesn’t kick in and the grapes will be ruined by a heat wave.

TA: You have won many accolades for your wines.

How do you explain your success?

SA: It’s all about the dirt, the terroir. We’ve had over four decades of experimenting, and we’ve planted different grapes in different soils, so we know what works and what doesn’t. If a variety is doing well, we leave it alone. We’ve been producing Chardonnay for 30 years, 20 to 25 years in the same vineyard. All our wines are 100 percent terroir-driven. You have to listen to the land.

my celebrity chefs.” We had our first festival in 1986, which was a big success, and the next year I invited the press. They all came and had a good time and wrote headlines referencing food, and of course wine. After two or three years of this, Ed attached the headlines to the AVA application as evidence that we were a known viticultural area and that’s all we needed. The AVA was granted in 1990.

EA: We’ve learned to plant the right variety in the right place and use the right winemaking techniques.

I like to use an analogy of the wildcatters who came to Texas looking for oil in the early 1900s: what if they’d picked up and gone home after drilling a few dry holes, concluding that there was no oil in Texas? That would have been one of the most colossal financial mistakes of all times. The analogy is not perfect, but it’s similar.

When Texas started producing wines, there were only a handful who tried Vitis vinifera, and if they didn’t get good results, they’d tell everyone you couldn’t grow vinifera here. It’s a shame, because they just didn’t plant in the right place or they didn’t vinify it correctly.

EA: Yes, Susan solved our AVA challenge by creating the Hill Country Wine & Food Festival. Texas is growing grapes in three major regions, and I realized that if we were going to be a player in the wine world, we needed to set ourselves apart. Our area is geologically unique, with lots of uplifts and erosions that subsequentially created hills, valleys and different soils. TA: Susan, you are credited with helping put Austin on the national culinary map when you founded the Hill Country Wine & Food Festival. What inspired you to start the event?

SA: When we were traveling in France, we realized that wine regions — be it Bordeaux, Burgundy or the Loire — were very important, and that success was based on the reputation of that region. I told Ed that we needed to get the Hill Country designated as an AVA. When we looked at the legal work, we learned that we had to prove the Hill Country was a definite geographic area, which we could do, and that it had a specific climate, which we could also do. But what we could not prove was that it was a known viticultural area. About that time, there was a growing food movement called “Southwest Cuisine” and some great Texas chefs were traveling to shows in California and New York to make a name for themselves. These chefs learned about our wines and invited us to go to the shows with them so we could serve Texas wine with Texas cuisine. We did this for a few years and finally, I said “Let’s turn the spotlight on Texas. I’ll create a festival and you’ll be

top of the hill might not work at the bottom. We have some incredible sites here, and the AVA calls attention to those sites.

TA: You have seen the Texas wine industry grow from three wineries in 1975 to over 400 today.

What changes have you seen and what do you see happening in the future?

SA: We have seen quite a proliferation of wineries and I think it’s great. The quality is improving for some wineries that have been around for a while, and those who are bringing in good, experienced winemakers. I see more winemakers coming to Texas from California.

As for us, we’re not as hands-on as we used to be, but we work very closely with our staff and our winemaker Sergio Cuadra, who has been with us for six years. Ed and Sergio and Scott Roberts, owner of

one of our sources, Salt Lick Vineyards, are always experimenting. We’re now growing Grenache Blanc and Carignan, and this year we’re going to release a sparkling wine from the Lenoir (Black Spanish) grape, which is native to Texas. As Sergio says, “Every grape is on the table.” It’s just a matter of having the right terroir and giving it a try.

EA: I think the Texas industry has great potential, but I don’t think everyone has quite realized it yet. Some wineries are making world-class wines, and I think more will as time goes on.

At Fall Creek, we have a whole horizon ahead of us. By planting the right varieties in the right place, and using the right winemaking techniques, we can do just about what anyone else can do. Tweaking the winemaking can make vast differences. So can oak aging: we’re getting incredible results with the new oak barrels that are on the market today. The opportunities are

endless, and we’re happy to be a part of it. We’re doing everything we can to help put Fall Creek Vineyards in Texas on the world map.

TA: One last question: What is your favorite food and wine pairing?

TA: Tell us a little about your involvement in KOV.

SA: Now that’s a hard one. I have so many, but right now it’s probably roasted lamb with rosemary and garlic paired with a Fall Creek Vineyards Tempranillo.

SA: We got together with some friends and started the Austin Chapter in 1999. We have over 100 members, and we’re one of the largest chapters in the country now. I think it’s a great organization. It gives us a platform for showcasing American wines, and so many good things happen over a glass of wine. KOV is a magnet that draws people together for good times and good friendships.

EA: I always tell people that my favorite wine is the one I’m drinking! Some wines are blessed with being very versatile, and some are very food specific. I’d say my favorite pairing is a charred rib-eye steak, cooked medium-rare in the center, paired with a Tempranillo.

I’d take that all day long.

EA: KOV helps spread the word about wine. We have a lot of good people in our chapter who are very knowledgeable about wine, and we all do our share to promote wines from California, and Texas, as well as elsewhere.

TA: Thank you so much for your interest in KOV and for sharing your history with us. Your story is truly inspirational.

SA: Thank you. It’s been a great adventure and we’ve met a lot of wonderful people around the world. We’ve loved every minute of it.

A Taste of

You could say Alexander the Great started it. Inspired by the International Federation of Wine Brotherhoods experience in Macedonia, Vice Commander Janet Hamilton decided to bring Macedonia home to our chapter members. With the help of a couple of Macedonian friends we met on the trip, we located a Macedonian cafe in Los Angeles. Lucky for us, the Aroma Café offered catering. We searched far and wide for Macedonian wines and found a large wine merchant who was featuring Macedonian wines that month. Timing is everything.

On August 5, Vice Commander Janet Hamilton opened her beautiful home and garden in La Cañada to share “A Taste of Macedonia.” About 35 members gathered in the evening to enjoy a selection of appetizers—Mezza Platters of cold meats with Kajmak, a soft “fresh” goat cheese and Ajvar, a condiment/spread made of slow-cooked red peppers, onions and sometimes eggplant. Baskets of warm pita were abundant. We also enjoyed two kinds of Burek, filo pastry filled with spinach or cheese while we sipped a Jordanov Rkiciteli Tikves Macedonia.

Dinner began with Shopska Salad: freshly chopped cucumbers, tomatoes, red onion, bell pepper and feta lightly dressed with a simple vinaigrette. The chef had told us that this was never made in advance…that’s what made it so fresh-tasting.

The main course was Cevapi (beef kebabs), but also kebabs of chicken and lamb. These were served with Grilled Summer Vegetables and a crisp Cabbage Salad. Both the kebabs and vegetables were grilled as we watched and enjoyed the appetizers. Perfect entertainment and appetite enhancer! A Macedon Cabernet Franc was the ideal choice for the grilled meats.

Desserts were sized so that everyone had a chance to sample both the Baklava Comm. Emeritus Neill Foster and the traditional Tufahija, walnut-stuffed apples stewed in sugar water. We lingered long after dinner, enjoying the evening air.

Opening the Holiday Season

at the Peninsula Hotel, Beverly Hills

It’s a tradition, our gathering in the Verandah Room, and every year brings a fresh surprise from Chef David Codney. This year we held our holiday event on November 30th so we’d have all of December to talk about it.

While we gathered, we sipped Billecart-Salmon Brut Sous Bois Champagne. Passed hors d’oeuvres included Mini Tostada with Queso Fresco, Black Bean Puree and Cilantro; Jumbo Shrimp Tempura with Preserved Mushroom and Ponzu; and Peking Duck Pot Stickers with a Papaya-Cilantro Relish.

We came to table as Ted Nicholson, harpist, played seasonal favorites. Our first course was a salad of Grilled Pears with Mizuna, Gorgonzola Cheese, dressed with a Cranberry Vinaigrette. The Walt 2016 Chardonnay Sonoma Coast Sonoma County was the perfect accompaniment.

Next, Seared Crab Cakes, Crispy Sweet Potatoes, and Coconut Lime Aioli was set before us and a Dolin Malibu Estate Vineyards 2013 Chardonnay Malibu Newton Canyon, was poured. Another perfect pairing. Our main course, Seared Barramundi, Black Garlic, Roasted Hen of the Woods Mushrooms, and Salsify Goat Cheese Gratin was served with a Gevrey - Chambertin 2015 Du Bourgogne Appellation Gevrey-Chambertin Controlee.

Finishing this delectable holiday feast was a Banana Bread Pudding, Rice Tuile, Bourbon Caramel, with Fresh Cream Chantilly. December arrived the next morning, but we’d had a head start celebrating.

is the new Phoenix

The Arizona Chapter has been napping for a period of time however, rising from the ashes, it has awakened refreshed and ready to meet the challenges of a new day! In the last several years there has been little activity within the chapter. A small, closely-knit group of friends and acquaintances have been keeping the spirit of the Brotherhood alive and have managed to put together a few special events with the help of others in surrounding areas.

The Cadre realized that in order to keep going and to survive, the group needed outside influencers who could not only create interest, but would be able to create a strong and robust group of likeminded members who could sustain growth and interest. Fellow members, Rick and Andrea Canchola, reached out to Tony Ray Baker and Darren Jones, Realtors and marketers, specializing in the revitalization of Tucson. Together they created a plan whereby within a few short months, we are enjoying a rebirth.

The theme for February’s event was Hollywood! with tastings by the Sand Reckoner Wine Tasting Room.

The food was an amazing pairing to the wines offered and whereas recent events had about 10 members in attendance, this event was well attended by 28 mostly new members. Darren and Tony Ray commented, “Events need to have a purpose and a direction.

We have new directions to discover and it’s too early to consider limitations.”

Annual Rate the Reds

Orange County

Competition is evident everywhere in our culture. A contest without a winner holds little interest for even the most casual observer. We care not for the last place finisher who earns a chuckle nor even the fourth place contender who rates just a smile. For those of us in the Orange County Knights of the Vine, we eagerly anticipate the annual competition event aptly named “Rate the Reds” with our characteristic enthusiasm. No, this is not to compare Putin with Castro (not that version of Reds).

This is about tasting and evaluating 6 different red wines!

Not just another reason to gather together for merriment, this exercise is a properly sanctioned educational experience as well. Our master sommelier, Bill Losee, carefully selected 6 varietals for us to sample. He has developed a criteria of 6 factors with which to judge the character of the wines he has selected. Color, clarity, taste, finish, nose and several others. The afternoon begins with an assortment of chilled white wines and a lighter Pinot Noir especially with the warm sun on this, a classic September afternoon in Southern California. A few appetizers make their appearance and are delightfully savored to accompany the beverages. And then the stage is set for the announcement of the rules of engagement.

The identity of the wines is carefully concealed as the bottles with their labels are sequestered in brown paper bags. Bill will announce the entries only as #1 or #2, etc. We then begin to sample the offerings, consult our grading sheet, and record our assessments. A grade of 2 is excellent, 1 very good, 0 somewhat fair (negative number weightings are not permitted because this, of course, would reflect poorly on our selection committee’s offerings). We then total the score for each wine. The rating cards are then collected and scrutinized carefully by an

impartial audit group. After all was tasted and tallied, the over all winner was Prisoner 2016, Napa Valley with a tie for second between Renegade 2018 Paso Robles and Tannat Reserve, 2016, Lodi, Producer Sobon.

To avoid any raucous behavior, the results were released via email 5 business days after the event had concluded.

Some of our more ambitious members will use these results, then review their notes and place the more highly ranked entries on their “To Buy” list. This not only enhances their enjoyment of the beverage but also sharpens their oenology acumen. Several of our members use the information in preparation for next year’s “Rate the Reds. Meanwhile, the rest of us simply smile and instead of saying “wait for next year!” but, rather, wait until next month when we will gather together again to revel in the friendship and conviviality of our little band of brothers and sisters. Or, more properly, Knights and Gentle Ladies.

QUATTRO CAFFÉ On Oct 2nd we gathered at Quattro Cafe in South Coast Plaza for the Knights of the Vine 2nd Annual Cooking Class Dinner. Over 40 were hosted by General Manager Executive Chef Domenico Grillo for a wonderful 4 course meal. Two of our group assisted Domenico with preparing each course and then we all enjoyed each course prepared by the Quattro staff. Some very interesting wines started flowing as soon as we arrived and continued right through dessert. Did I mention that Domenico is quite the entertainer as we joined him in singing Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin songs between courses. We cannot wait until May for this year’s cooking class dinner!

The Christmas Gathering Christmas is a time when most abandon our commitment to diet and, instead, drink and indulge in the culinary delights served up by our members so that our waistlines will undoubtedly expand from even the smallest portions on our plate. This year was no different as we met at the home of Knight John and Dianne Artim on December 2 to sample a wide variety of wonderful creations from our members’ kitchens. The wines offered were equally diverse and abundant. From appetizers to dessert, we rejoiced at our good fortune of friendship to be members of the Orange County Knights of the Vine.

As mentioned, members each bring a dish to share with all. Members then vote on each dish, with the top 3 vote getters receiving a prize in order of the vote total.

Following dinner, the real fun begins as members draw numbers to open decorated, concealed wine bottles.

Participants can steal a bottle from each other one time and then that bottle is frozen and belongs to that person.

Everyone goes home with a smile and a wine different from what they brought!

A surprise visit from Santa Claus made our evening all the more festive as many sat on his knee to make their Christmas wishes known.

NEWPORT HARBOR CRUISE We mariners know that, at sea, letters of a vessel have significance. For example, HMS means His Majesty’s Ship (or Her Majesty’s Ship). USS means United States Ship and SV means Sailing Vessel.

This abbreviation is followed by the vessel’s name.

Consider the USS Constitution also known as “Old Ironsides”, the oldest (1774) commissioned warship in the US Navy. But I digress. In August 2018, we were treated to a voyage aboard the DV LOTS OF LOVE skipped by Knight Bill Losee. The DV stands for Duffy Vessel which is a 12 passenger vessel powered by electricity. The skipper of the LOTS OF LOVE Knight John Moreiko, and Bill, navigated the often treacherous shoals of Newport Beach Harbor with considerable skill that only comes with years of experience under the most trying conditions. We, the crew, hardly noticed because we were constantly drinking the marvelous wines brought on board for the afternoon sojourn, along with the delicious hors d’oeuvres that were served up to the convivial fellowship of the crew. This was an afternoon which we plan to replicate for many years to come. With wishes to all for “fair winds”.

As a warm August moon arose over Sonoma Valley’s Buena Vista Winery, Knights and Gentle Ladies stepped back in time to wine, dine and delight in the fun and frivolity of Shakespeare Under the Stars, an annual event KOV members look forward to attending each fall.

This year’s affair featured the Avalon Players of Sonoma and their comedic interpretation of Two Gentlemen of Verona. Set on the Courtyard in front of the restored Barrel Room, guests noshed on picnic-style fare and sipped a lovely selection of Buena Vista wines as the talented troupe kept everyone in good spirits.

The event was hosted in collaboration between San Francisco Bay Area and Tahoe Chapters and we were thrilled with the large turnout of fellow revelers representing Monterey, Lodi and Chancellery chapters, along with their guests (and potential new members!).

Holiday Celebration

By Fran Benavidez Just in time for the holidays, San Francisco Bay Area Knights of the Vine and guests met up for an afternoon gathering at the lovely Brisbane home of Andi and Scooter Blacklock.

The beautiful Blacklock home is nestled high in the hills overlooking the Bay, and the interior was festively decorated to put everyone in the Christmas spirit! On the patio, a roaring fire pit provided a toasty setting to enjoy our wines paired with ocean views and the ocKristine Deaton & Isaac casional sprinkling rain.

Benavidez Wine selections for the afternoon ranged from Zinfandel, Grenache, Petite Syrah and Syrah blends, produced by Paso Robles’ Guyomar Winery to Napa Valley’s red blend from Raymond Vineyards. Cento Osteria of San Francisco provided a buffet-style selection of delicious charcuterie, pizza, pasta and roasted chicken and decadent chocolate desserts.

Master Commander Pat Pingitore warmly welcomed and thanked everyone for attending the impromptu gathering, and in the spirit of the holidays, he and Gentle Lady Linda Pingitore raffled a beautiful gift basket full of wine and delights.

Joining in the holiday celebration was extra special since it gave us the chance to spend the afternoon with Andi and Scooter’s charming family. We also enjoyed meeting a few KOV members who live in the San Francisco area and beyond, such as Monterey Chapter’s Master Scribe, Kristine Deaton, who was traveling northward and decided to stop in and meet everyone; a wonderful surprise!

Truly, one of the numerous perks of being a part of this wonderful organization is having the freedom to attend all events held by other chapters near and far. Through Knights of The Vine, my husband and Knight, Isaac Benavidez, and I have made many new friends, enjoyed new wine experiences and often raise our glasses in appreciation for our fellow Knights and Gentle Ladies.

Napa Valley Country Club Harvest Celebration Andi Blacklock, Fran Benavidez, Giselle McKellar & Heather Browning

On October 12, our group was extended an invitation to attend the Napa Valley Country Club to participate in their Annual Fall Harvest Wine Reception.

Many of our members attended and were feted by a wonderful display of food at various food stations. As usual, the food was excellent. Many local wineries, including Master Knight Paul Maroon, poured their wines, most of which were good to very good. All in all, the event was a steal at a price of $50 each.

FICB International Congress ~ REPORT The Annual FICB meeting was held in Paris January 25 and 26. The detailed proceedings can be found on the FICB website (www. winebrotherhoods.org) but the highlights that might be of interest to you are the following.

Membership: Since Alan Bryden became President a few years ago, the number of dues paying Brotherhoods has risen from 36 to 55!

Recent additions include one of the most ancient French Brotherhoods, the St Andiu de la Galiniero, dating back to the 12th Century, and Braille’s de Lalande de Pomerol from Bordeaux. Brotherhoods also now include one from Estonia, an additional Serbian Brotherhood and KOV’s new South Korean Chapter. The Renaud Society Brotherhood (made up of medical professionals dedicated to research the health benefits of wine) was also admitted. An application from Trento in the Italian Alto Adige region has been received and soon will be formally accepted. Among the plans for this year include increased efforts to recruit additional prestigious French Brotherhoods (Alsace, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Chablis), as well as the Rioja in Spain.

Diploma of Honor: The FICB is always looking to award more Diplomas and is open for nominations of individuals who have contributed significantly to the International World of Wine. Prominent KOV recipients include Alan Shoup of our Washington State Chapter, Jean-Charles Boisset and Gina Gallo of the San Francisco/Bay Area Chapter. The complete list of recipients is available on the FICB website. If you know of anyone in your Chapter who may be deserving, please forward that nomination to me and I will pass it on to the FICB. Finances: The FICB is in great financial shape.

Last year’s budget ran a small surplus and 2019 is forecasted to be a small deficit since it is a non-

Congress year as royalties make up a significant part of the revenue. Overall the reserves are at approximately 21,000 €. Again details are available on the FICB website. Bottom line: no increase in dues for 2019!

New Projects The Board approved a project with the University of Burgundy to refine and validate the Lexicon of Wine terms now available on the website in 5 languages. The project would make the lexicon more dynamic (allows look up in any of the 5 languages) and eventually make it available in a mobile app. The benefits include a validated reference from a university known for its gastronomic and oenophilic background, provide a useful portable tool for members, and perhaps allow future revenue from advertising.

International Events: 1. The Macedonian Congress was deemed a huge success from the attendees’ point of view; save for the missed opportunity for more attendees. Some of the local organizers were financially hurt by the attendance of just 112 as opposed to the 135-150 expected. They were applauded for their excellent organization and the unforgettable experiences they provided those of us who were there.

2. International Wine Challenge in Helsinki, Finland is scheduled for June 6-9, 2019 with 89 registrants from 10 countries. The rules of the Wine Challenge are published on the website and a handsome trophy medal has been ordered for the winners in each of the Amateur and Professional categories. Any country or region wishing to have their wines judged during the event must have at least one attendee from their Brotherhood in attendance and must send their wines before May 1, 2019. Shipping instructions are available for those wishing to do so.

While the details are not yet fully known for this program, it is expected that participants will enjoy a similar program to the Congress in the LangheRoero during the truffle season.

3. Congress 2020 in Alba Italy: The final details of the Italian Congress in Alba, Italy June 4-7, 2020 and the Extension to Turin June 8-9 were presented. The Congress looks wonderful, however, we are faced with a big dilemma of space restriction to 180 International attendees and an initial allocation of 40 places to KOV! Space limitation is due to the small venues for lunches and dinners in the small villages of Alba and its surrounding towns. A space allocation formula by Brotherhood was developed by the FICB Board (I did personally participate) and a pre-registration by each Brotherhood will be conducted carefully to allow fairness. Past Congress attendance (of last 3 Congresses) was considered by FICB in the allocation. Final non-refundable payment in full by attendees will be due September 1, 2019 and travel insurance is strongly encouraged. We expect, but cannot guarantee, that additional spaces will be made available in a second round with the second allocation distributed on the same pro-rata formula. Rest assured that the historical contribution of the KOV USA was recognized in the pro-rated allocation based on the previous 3 years attendance, but as noted above, there are now 55 Brotherhoods and they must be afforded the opportunity to attend. Registration cannot be attempted without a code (per person and nontransferable) that will be given out through our national office. If interested, you must contact the national office and complete a form that will be considered by the Grand Council. KOV will maintain a “waiting list” and while we wish we had more spaces allocated, we do have the most of any brotherhood in the world. On another note, the FICB, recognizing that many who wish to go to the Congress cannot be accommodated due to venue limitations, is working with the Italian Brotherhood on an FICB sponsored wine discovery tour in the fall of 2020 for 40 to 50 participants.

4. International Wine Challenge #2 - June 2021: The new Chapter in Hong Kong has offered to develop a proposal for the next Wine Challenge.

An Extension to Macau (also a new Brotherhood) would be included. Details to come but apparently these Brotherhoods’ “raison d’être” is blind tasting, so the FICB is confident they will propose a wonderful event.

5. International Wine Discovery Tour: this is a new category and hasn’t been done yet, but is designed to highlight a specific region with a small (50 maximum) group. The Brotherhood in Slovenia has offered to put together the inaugural Wine Discovery Tour with a presentation due at the next FICB meeting in February 2020.

6. Congress 2022 in Oporto, Portugal is slated for June 21-25, 2022 with Extension to Lisbon and surroundings from June 26-27, 2022. Additional details were shared by the organizers of this Congress. However, the cost was higher than average (1760€/person) and the timing of the Congress to coincide with the feast of St John the Baptist was a likely contributing factor. This swells the population of Oporto by an additional 1 million people making hotels more expensive and getting around more difficult. Although a wonderful experience (ask anyone who was there in 1998!), the Board asked them to consider moving the dates to obtain more favorable rates from hotels. On a positive note, there would be no capacity issues for this Congress with 300 or more attendees possible.

The FICB reminded everyone to submit interesting articles, or events of note to them for publication on their website.

Next FICB meeting scheduled for February 21-22, 2020.
