Commander’s Desk

With the New Year comes a time to reflect on what has come before. This issue of The Arbor allows us to appreciate and acknowledge all of the great times and great wines that are a vital part of our Brotherhood, but even more is the great fellowship that we get to share. As a volunteer organization, it is no small feat that so much happens within our Chapters and I want to thank all those who work so diligently to make it so! Since becoming Grand Commander, I have been able to attend events in Tucson, Napa, Sacramento, Biloxi, Monterey and Los Angeles and I already have plans to get to more events in the upcoming months. The commanders, cadres and the national officers must be in place and working together; however, it is the members … those Knights and Gentle Ladies who share their time and their talent and their ideas for great events … that is the glue that makes our Brotherhood special and something we can be proud of.

You’ll read about the progress being made on the 2016 FICB in the following pages. Registration is expected to open in mid-July and space will be limited so I encourage you to make plans to get registered for this “must attend” event as soon as registration does open. To be notified directly, the National office must have a good email address for you. Drop us a note with that information and any other feedback you would like to give us at kov-office@kov.org.

For just the second time in our history, our National Meeting (also called the Delegates Meeting) will be held outside of California; this year in Houston, Texas April 24 – 26. All members in good standing are welcome and encouraged to attend. I have it on good authority that Houston is planning to roll out the red carpet and is looking forward to welcoming you!

What a great future we have ahead of us. I look forward to seeing you in my travels and encourage you to get to events at your chapter as well as other chapters so you can share in the many and varied experiences we have to offer.

Kick Off Party at

Austin Woman’s Club

On Tuesday, January 13, the knights and gentle ladies of the Austin Chapter of the Knights of the Vine assembled for their 2015 Kick Off Party at the historic Chateau Bellevue, home of the Austin Woman’s Club. Rose Betty Williams, Master de Partis, made elaborate plans for the event. The Chapter’s newly-named Master Commander, Jerry Gatlin, and his wife Susan did a fine job of presiding over the gathering.

Guests enjoyed wine selections such as a G.H. Mumm Cordon Rouge Brut which, according to one review, was “Svelte and well-knit, with a minerally underpinning of smoke and chalk notes, and hints of lemon meringue pie and glazed apricot riding the creamy mousse. Bright and lively.” It was rated 90 by Wine Spectator. Other wine selections included a 2012 Joseph Phelps Chardonnay Freestone Vineyard Sonoma rated 94 by Robert Parker; a 2013 Belle Glos Pinot Noir Clark & Telephone from Santa Maria Valley, which earned a 90 rating from Wine Spectator; and a 2010 Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley, which rated a 96 from Wine Spectator.

Harvey Kronberg, publisher and editor of The Quorum Report, an important Texas political publication, was overheard discussing his views on the upcoming legislative session. Renowned Texas winemakers Susan and Ed Auler were seen conversing with Jan Burrow and other friends of theirs.

Everyone present agreed that the event was a delightful way to begin the New Year and many festive toasts were raised. Commander Gatlin said that a schedule of other fun events is planned for the rest of 2015.

L’Ecole Culinaire Following last year’s cooking class experience, the Tennessee Chapter returned to L’Ecole Culinaire in Memphis for another fun evening of culinary instruction. The group assembled at L’Ecole, armed with wines from Argentina, to experience the cuisine of that country. Chef Spencer McMillin, assisted by the culinary students, led the group and divided us into teams in the preparation of our dinner. First and foremost was a lesson in knife skills. All participants were taught how to correctly dice onions and tomatoes without removing parts of fingers—very important! Each team proceeded to prepare an Ensalada de Tomatoes and Onions, Grilled Trout, Spinach and Cheese Tamales, and the grand finale, Crepes with Dulce de Leche.

The competition mounted as teams checked on each other’s progress on the various courses and, in particular, the expertise of corn husk wrapping of the tamales. The Dulce de Leche sauce was the last competition, as teams compared the color and thickness of each sauce. Of course, all this fun and camaraderie was enhanced by the Argentine wines that were brought to complement the evening, especially during the dinner preparation. Following the seated dinner in the L’Ecole dining room, the group praised Chef McMillin and his students for their instruction. We hope that the cooking school becomes an annual affair for the Tennessee chapter.

On December 5, the chapter gathered for dinner at the home of Mas ter Commander Tom Webb to commemorate the 81st anniversar y of the repeal of prohibition.

Inspired by Karmere Temperance Tart, made by winemaker and KOV member Dawn Martella of the Chancellery Chapter, members were asked to bring a wine from a winery that stayed in operation during prohibition and was still operating today. We toasted those winemakers who survived those dark, awful years of our nation’s history. Members and guests discussed the wines that they brought and Tucker Larkin entertained us with his “medicinal” bottle of our beloved Tennessee whiskey, Jack Daniels. Surely, many have been cured of a multitude of illnesses with a swig or two of “Jack.” The evening was enjoyed by every member of our chapter, our first 100% event!!!

toEurope Twenty eight Knights and Gentle Ladies went to Reno August 23rd and were dealt a series of winning hands at the Total Wine & More retailer. The dealer was the store’s in-house Sommelier, Shannon DeDora, who took us through nine varietals of European wines, The double down on all the wines was the complementary foods for each wine prepared by our resident Maitresse de Cuisine, Dr. Mai Nguyen.

Ms. DeDora started appropriately with a Georges Vesselle Grand Brut, Champagne, appropriate since the FICB Congress was just held in Champagne and some attendees were still relishing the tastes that lingered from that event. Mai accented that taste with an eggplant with fig and crème fraiche. It was a decadent, delicious and delightful match.

So it went as the hands were dealt from Italy, Spain, France and Portugal. A delicious Ch. Du Pope Blanc was served with prosciutto and nectarine. That combination was blessed as was chicken liver pate with truffle oil that accompanied the Valserrano Gran Reserva Rioja. Play was slowed at the introduction of

a Ch. La Pointe Pomeral, Bordeaux, which highlighted a presentation of chicken skewers in a bourbon marinade and plum glaze. It was difficult to rate that combination against the Ch. Brane Cantenac Margaux paired with steak and grilled zucchini.

Throughout the evening Shannon gave full backgrounds and analysis of the wines that were offered. She included historic notes and projections of the future of these wines and their brethren. “Total Wine & More” had all the tasted wines available for purchase. Once we were completely satiated, the finale was a 10-year old Tawny Port, accompanied by dark chocolate bark with almonds and salt. Our hosts and their representatives, as well as Dr. Mai Nguyen, made everyone a winner.

LAKE TAHOE’S FOURTEENTH ANNUAL ASSEMBLAGE The Maitre de Cuisine at the Granlibakken Resort at Tahoe, Chef Ron Eber, is so accomplished and sought after that it’s no wonder that we had a absolutely full house for our annual Fall Assemblage. Because Granlibakken caters primarily to major conferences, too few locals get the opportunity to savor this iconic Chef. But for us, he opened up his dining room and there was no disappointment there.

HOLIDAY PARTY It is hard to believe that the annual Holiday event could get any better, but our Maitresse de Cuisine, Gentle Lady, Dr. Mai Nguyen, never ceases to surprise. Added to her freshly prepared potato latkes was a sweet and sour beef brisket. Pair that together with poached maple salmon, applewood smoked glazed ham, noodle kugel, a half dozen salads, and a bourbon puff dessert. It’s no wonder almost one hundred of the faithful showed up!

A Brief History of the Origin of the Toast

Traditionally, on New Year’s Eve or other special occasions, we raise our glasses and toast one another with words like Cheers, Chin Chin, Skål, or Santé. We all know that this ritual is an expression of honor or good will, but do we know its origin? The answer to this may surprise some of you.

According to early records, it all started with the Greeks, who would offer “libations” to honor the Gods, as well as each other.

In Homer’s Odyssey, written in 800 B.C., Ulysses drinks to the health of Achilles. Across the Mediterranean, in the Roman Empire, the Senate passed a law that all must honor the Emperor Augustus with a toast at every meal. The Romans often dropped pieces of burned bread (called “tostus,” Latin for roasted or parched) into bad wine to reduce the acidity and disguise the flavor, which explains the origin of the word “toast” in today’s food and drink vocabulary.

Theories differ on whether clinking glasses during toasts originated in those earliest days, or whether that custom arrived on the scene later. Some historians suggest that the Greeks—living in an age when poisoning was commonplace—clinked glasses together so each drink would spill over into the other, which would certainly discourage the host from contaminating the libations.

Others believe that “clinking” began in the Christian era to scare off evil spirits with a bell-like sound. Many wine aficionados today adhere to the legend that clinking glasses engages all five senses, making the act of drinking more enjoyable.

All we can say for certain is that toasting to one’s health had crossed the Atlantic into England by the 400s. The first recorded toast there occurred at a feast between British King Vortigern and his Saxon Allies, led by Hengist, around 450 A.D. Hengist’s beautiful daughter, Renwein (Rowena), offered a goblet of spiced wine to the king and the words “Louerd King, waes hael!” (Lord King, be of health). The king was so impressed that he immediately proposed marriage. Rowena’s “waes hael” eventually became today’s wassail, a mulled or spiced wine served in a large bowl, traditionally at Christmas time.

Toasting became increasingly popular during the 17th and 18th centuries, especially in the British Isles. In fact, it grew so popular that it led to excessive drinking and merriment. Friends toasted each other and, when the occasion ran out of guests to toast, they toasted absent friends, which extended the period of indulgence, often as long as eight to ten hours. Drinking games and toasting competitions were also common, with many designed to impress the ladies. Young men, for example,

would often stab themselves in the arm, then mix the blood with their wine when toasting a woman to prove his loyalty. Shakespeare refers to this bizarre toasting ritual in The Merchant of Venice, when the King of Morocco talks of stabbing himself and then laments: I stabbed my arm to drink her health, The more fool I, the more fool I. It was during this time—a rowdy time, no doubt—that the position of “toastmaster” came into being. In Henry Fielding’s Tom Jones, published in 1749, the author speaks of a toastmaster, whose duties were to propose and announce toasts. More than likely, the toastmaster was actually a sort of “party referee” who made sure that everyone got a fair chance and equal opportunity to offer toasts —while staying sober and offending nobody.

Eventually, these excessive practices—and the drunkenness that inevitably ensued—lead to anti-toasting clubs and movements. As a result, toasting developed into a more social and civilized pursuit rather than one focused purely on drinking alcohol. Around this time, several books were published to introduce proper toasting decorum into the culture. One of these, The Toastmasters Guide by T. Hughes, published in London in 1806, included short, witty toasts appropriate for just about any occasion. Among the examples are: The rose of pleasure without the thorn.

Mirth, wine and love.

May the works of our nights never fear the daylight.

Old wine and young women.

Prudence and temperance with claret and champagne.

Love without fear, and life without care.

A generous heart and a miser’s fortune.

May we live in pleasure and die out of debt.

Toasting reached the United States during the Revolutionary War, where it quickly caught on in the spirit of a new republic. During the war, toasts were directed at the adversary: To the enemies of our country! May they have cobweb breeches, a porcupine saddle, a hard-trotting horse, and an eternal journey.

After the war, it was customary to celebrate official dinners or other events with thirteen toasts, one for each

state. According to A Brief History of Raised Glasses by Paul Dickson, for many years the thirteen toasts were obligatory at local Fourth of July celebrations, with each toast followed by an artillery salute, three cheers from the crowd and a song. Dickson reports that toasting in the U.S. was enriched by the skill of some of America’s early leaders, especially Benjamin Franklin. His most famous toast was one he delivered at Versailles while American’s emissary to France. On this occasion, the toasting was led by the British ambassador, who said, “George the Third, who, like the sun in its meridian, spreads a luster throughout and enlightens the world.”

The next toast came from the French minister, who said, “The illustrious Louis the Sixteenth, who, like the moon, sheds his mild and benevolent rays on and influences the globe.” Franklin finished the round with “George Washington, commander of the American armies, who, like Joshua of old, commanded the sun and the moon to stand still, and both obeyed.” For the great orator, this was a slam dunk, indeed.

Today, centuries later, drinking and toasting are synonymous with celebrations to honor the importance of the event—and the company. Each country has its own tradition, many going back thousands of years. Here are just a few: France The standard toast in France is “santé” (to your health). According to tradition, those toasting must maintain eye contact as they clink glasses, and toast everyone in the group without crossing arms. The superstitious claim that if you fail to follow the rules, you will have seven years of bad sex.

Spain A typical toast in Spain is “Salud,” which means “good health.” In parts of Catalonia, men toast their buddies with “Salut I força al canut,” which means “health and strength to your ‘pipe.’”

Denmark In Denmark, toasting is a rather formal affair. Guests may never toast their hosts— or anyone older or more senior in rank—until they have been toasted first. It’s also considered impolite to taste your drink until the host has said “Skål,” pronounced “Skoal” (from Nordic skāl, which is used for raising a toast and also means bowl).

Ukraine Everyone at the table is expected to propose at least one toast, with the host making the first toast. They say ‘budmo!’ which translates into ‘we’ll live forever!’ and

everyone else gives a gutteral “hey!’ This “hey” is repeated two or three times before anyone actually drinks.

China The host offers the first toast, saying, “Gan bei,” meaning “bottoms up,” or “Kai pay,” meaning “drain your glass.” Toasting continues throughout the meal. It’s considered proper to drink the whole contents of the glass as a sign of respect, while looking at the person you are drinking with. It’s also a sign of respect to touch the other person’s glass below the rim. After the first toast and touching of the glasses, glasses are tapped on the table for the following toasts.

South Africa The Zulu variant on “Cheers!” just means “Cheers!” but the phrase used is quite unique: it’s Oogy wawa.

Mexico Customarily, only men give toasts. The common toast is Salud! (for health). The most senior host or visitor usually initiates a toast. Here are two interesting old Mexican toasts: With glass in hand... do the following: • Arriba... lift glass up • Abajo... lower glass down • Al centro... place glass to center and click glasses • Adentro... means liquid goes inside you... drink Another Old Mexican Toast: • Salude ... health • Amor... love • Riquezas... wealth • Y TIEMPO para gozarlos... and TIME to enjoy them all America In America, it’s customary to toast the guest of honor, who in turn reciprocates by giving a toast of thanks.

The simplest toasts involve little more than raising a glass and saying “Cheers.” The word “Cheers,” by the way, comes from the Latin word for face or countenance. By the 18th century, it had come to mean gladness and was first recorded as a shout of encouragement or support.)

Clearly, toasting is a universal language that has evolved over centuries and centuries. But since the beginnings, it has always been about good health, good will and good friends. Sometimes it’s even about the drink itself, especially if it’s extraordinary! So, the next time you open a bottle of bubbly—or any other celebratory “libation”— think back to those ancient Greeks and Romans who created this festive ritual, with or without the poison, and give thanks…with a toast, of course ~ Cheers!!

Thomas Jefferson Nation’s Capital

Harvest Dinner

On November 8, twenty-six members and guests of the Nation’s Capital Chapter of the Brotherhood of the Knights of the Vine gathered to celebrate the black-tie Thomas Jefferson Harvest Dinner, in honor of the third President of the United States, an early advocate of fine wines in America, and a venturous explorer of different foods for the American people.

The venue was the Bistro Cacao, an exquisite restaurant in a converted old townhouse on Massachusetts Avenue, on the northeast side of Capitol Hill.

Owner-chef Kemal Deger is of Turkish decent, but trained in classical French cuisine. Within a few minutes of meeting him, we realized he was the type of chef we seek for such dinners – imaginative and willing to challenge our palates and especially challenge our ability to find appropriate wines, particularly for the double-pairings, which our members so enjoy.

Chef Deger’s proposed menu did not disappoint.

The menu required that those who select the wines employ their secret weapon – the owners of Schneider’s of Capitol Hill, who are the largest dealer in fine wine in the city, and less than a block from the restaurant. The pairing of the culinary skills of the chef with the knowledge of the wine merchants made the choice among the recommendations a delightful experience, and a challenging one.

Those privileged to attend, gathered to enjoy an assortment of Champagnes and Sparkling Wines. Of course, a few of our remaining bottles of 1990 A.R Lenobel were available for those who enjoy distinctive Champagne that is fully mature, but most do not.

The Pan-Seared Scallops served with Apricot stuffed with Goat Cheese and Mango Pomegranate Champagne Sauce went beautifully with the Heimberger Gewürztraminer Vieilles Vignes, 2011. The Gewürztraminer gave a bit more intensity to balance the goat cheese than Riesling, which would often be chosen for scallops.

The perfectly cooked (lightly done) Roasted Duck Breast with Celery Root and Carrots Puree and GingerCherry Sauce was beautifully accompanied by the Pali Pinot Noir, Summit, 2011, from the Santa Rita Hills, Santa Barbara County, California. The medium-full bodied Pinot, with notes of dark berry fruits, cherry and spice balanced the Ginger-Cherry sauce, a favorite accompaniment with duck for some. Too often ginger is considered a category killer for wine, and must be taken moderately.

The Pistachio Crusted Sea Bass with braised Endives and Raspberry Thyme Sauce was perfectly done and beautifully sauced. It was accompanied by the first doublepairing of the evening, a Cooper Vineyards Estate Chardonnay, 2013 (unoaked) and Morgon Domaine des Souchons, Les Climats, 2012. For those who prefer oldworld style wines, Cooper Vineyards is an exceptional producer in the rapidly-growing Virginia wine industry.

The unoaked Chardonnay was a French-style classic, similar to white wines from northern Burgundy. At this point, we needed the intermezzo of Lemon Sorbet, during which we continued to enjoy the wines previously served. All this to get ready for the big boys.

The first big boy was Grilled Venison served with Asparagus, Shiitake Mushrooms and Lamb Juice Shallot Sauce. The wines were Raspail-Ay Gigondas, 2010 and Chevalier Crozes Hermitage “Voleysses” 2012. Even those of us in the East realize that a number of wine producers in California, especially those in the foothills of Sierra Nevada Mountains, such as Amador County, have been calling themselves the Rhône Rangers, planting the classic grapes of Rhône, France. These grapes include Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre (GSM).

In this double-pairing, we may have been a bit too clever.

The Raspail-Ay Gigondas is excellent with 80% Grenache and the rest mostly Syrah with a touch of Mourvedre.

Chevalier Crozes Hermitage “Voleysses” 2012 is Grenache and Syrah, excellent, but perhaps not quite as complex.

The subtle differences in the wines may have been missed by many enjoying the wonderful dinner.

The second big boy was Buffalo Tenderloins served with Roquefort Cheese Potato Gratin, French Green Beans and Port Wine Sauce. The buffalo (bison) tenderloins were accompanied by Callejo Reserva, 2006, (old vines) and Cooper Vineyards Norton Reserve, 2012. Many wine experts assert Norton is a native-American grape, first found in Virginia. Is it a spontaneous hybrid of a native-American vine with a European vine? Who knows? We don’t know what those early settlers did.

Prior to the dreaded Prohibition, Norton was one of the most popular wine grapes in the US and won many international prizes. The grape produces a rich red, full-bodied wine and is doing well in Virginia, Missouri, and, now, California.

We finished this grand dinner in a manner that Thomas Jefferson may approve – an individual apple tart – stunning. According to the well-respected Brooklyn Botanic Garden, a compendium of apples published by the US Department of Agriculture in 1905 listed 17,000 apple names. Allowing for overlap of different names, Americans grew about 14,000 varieties in the 19th century.

Apparently, the only apple native to America is the sour, crab apple. Poor to eat, it made good hard cider. Colonists tried to import trees, seeds, and cuttings; some of which were given to Thomas Jefferson.

Herein lies an interesting part of the story: “Seeds from fruit trees often produce haphazard results. Apple seeds, in particular, are notoriously variable, yielding seedlings, or pippins, that often bear only a glancing resemblance to the parent tree. This tendency, known to botanists as heterozygosity….” Wine grapes may have heterozygosity. Not only are cuttings from the proper variety important to establishing a vineyard, but also cuttings from the proper clone.

But what to have with Apple Tart? The dish immediately calls for Sauternes. Under proper conditions, Sémillon, the other great white grape of Bordeaux, produces a wine of unusual complexity with a touch of sweetness counterbalanced by acidity. Château d’Yquem is the most prized of these Sauternes; but market demand has driven its cost to prohibitive levels. According to legend, a neighboring first growth producer, Château Guiraud, has vineyards that touch those of Château d’Yquem.

Rich, full bodied, with deep color and great noble rot, the 2003 Château Guiraud is at its plateau of maturity.

A perfect accompaniment for an apple tart. Heterozygosity? Who knows?

Thus, we finished a grand Thomas Jefferson Harvest Dinner in a splendid manner, which he may have experienced in his journeys throughout France.

OCTOBERFEST EVENT

Our September event was held in the backyard at the beautiful home of Janet Hamilton. Although the calendar said September 27, this was, in fact, our new October Fest Event. The house was beautifully decorated with as many October Fest items as Janet could find to add flavor to this evening. With casual dress and the addition of German wine and beer, we were off to a great start for a celebration! The wines served were German Sparking Wine Schloss Bieberich, Ueich Lagguth Riesling Hessi (white wine), Cleebr Pinot Noir and Trollinger Red, Dr Beck Sweet Red, and a variety of German Beers! The dinner was catered by Gourmet a GoGo, and we started with hors d’oeuves of baked Camembert with red currant sauce, lentil soup, potato pancakes served with Black Forest ham and sauerkraut.

Our dinner carried the October Fest theme with Weisswurst, Bratwurst, Knackwurst, red cabbage, sauerkraut, German potato salad, Rouladen (beef ), fresh baked German breads and apple strudel.

We returned to the elegant Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills to celebrate the holidays with a black tie dinner for our December 7th event. We began with Potel-Prieux Extra Brut Champagne for the reception. How fortunate we were as this excellent Champagne has limited distribution in France! It was quite enjoyable with the hors d’oeuvres of marinated artichoke, black truffle and tomato relish on rosemary bread and the watermelon gazpacho with pickled onion and cilantro. Passed appetizers, during the reception, also included Peking duck pot stickers with papaya-cilantro relish. As we entered the dining room, we were struck by how lovely the room was with the tables beautifully decorated with lovely flowers.

To begin, we dined on roasted beet and arugula salad with oranges, candied walnuts and sherry vinaigrette which was paired with a 2013 Pinot Gris, Estate, Illahe Vineyards. Next came sautéed scallops with butternut squash, white corn and haricot verts with whole grain mustard served with a 2012 Belondrade y Lurton, Rueda, Spain. For the main course, the chef prepared grilled Barramundi with roasted tomatoes, quinoa basil and fennel confit with saffron sauce and assorted breads, rolls and sweet butter. The wine with our main course was a 2012 Pinot Noir, Mill Creek, Peter Paul. The meal concluded with a strawberry layer mousse with almond strudel, strawberry ice cream and a 2011 Ice Wine, Selaks, New Zealand as well as an offering of Peninsula Blend of coffee and tea. Many thanks to our Event Chairman Master Vice Commander Janet Hamilton for not only a lovely event, but also for the holiday gift each person received! What a most pleasant surprise we received at the arrival of carolers who sang holiday songs to us and also for the band so we could dance.

Needless to say, the holiday spirit was with us!

Reception and Authentic Italian Dinner

The group moved on to a dinner with Italian wines at Vincitorio’s Italian Restaurant in Tempe, which is one of the few restaurants in the Phoenix area that offers authentic Italian food. The authenticity starts with the pedigree of Mario Vincitorio himself. He was born and raised in the ancient hilltop town of Rignano (renyahno) in Southern Italy, and he has been in the restaurant business since coming to America over 20 years ago.

Mario and Ginger set out to create a dining experience that transports their guests to Italy the moment they enter…and they have succeeded beautifully. Phoenix Magazine has named Vincitorio’s ‘The Best Neighborhood Italian Restaurant.’ Our dinner was served in the Enoteca Wine Bar, a private dining room. It was warm and intimate and our Brotherhood thoroughly enjoyed the charming atmosphere of this setting.

And of course, we thoroughly enjoyed the food, starting with a sample of five different appetizers; Calamari Fritti, Garlic Knots, Prosciutto Wrapped Asparagus, Antipasto Italiano, and Romano Flatbread. The appetizers were served with three Italian wines, one from Veneto, one from Sargena, and one from Adige. Our next offering was the Ravioli de Zucca (butternut squash) which is the pasta specialty of the house. It was served with a Montepulciano from Abruzzi. Understandably, this dinner won great applause from everyone.

We moved on with soups and salads and Veal and Chicken Marsala as our main course, served with a wonderful red Italian wine from Veneto. We completed the evening with the dessert specialty of the house, Tiramisu, served with a Moscato Prosecco from Piemonte. The pedigree of the authentic Italian restaurant, the warm ambience, the unforgettable food and perfectly complemented wines, paired with the beautiful piano music of Billy Ward equaled a most successful and awesome evening for the Arizona Chapter of the Brotherhood of the Knights of the Vine. Much thanks to Georgiann Jensen and Nancy Minor for coordinating a beautiful and memorable evening.

The Arizona Chapter met in Tempe, Arizona on Saturday, November 1. We began with a reception held at the home of Master Herald, Georgiann Jensen and her husband, Andrew Jensen. We enjoyed five homemade hors d’oeuvres with Italian Proseccos and Italian Pinot Grigios. Everyone enjoyed the homemade offerings orchestrated by Georgiann and Gentle Lady Nancy Minor which included chicken liver mousse with pumpernickel bread slices and cornichons, stuffed autumn mushrooms, pickled quail eggs with baby red beets, fresh jumbo shrimp with spicy sauce, and chicken salad on Belgium endive leaves. Good fellowship ensued, along with a detailed and enthusiastic discussion of future wine events for the Arizona Chapter.

ARIZONA CHAPTER On Saturday, September 20, 2014, the Arizona Chapter of the Brotherhood of the Knights of the Vine met in grand style for a black-tie event at Hacienda del Sol, Resort, nestled in the Catalina Foothills in Tucson.

The agenda for the evening was the induction of new members, Miki and Craig Jackson, Debra Imus and Debra Hendrix.

We were very pleased to welcome our Grand Commander Buddy Hagner and his wife who flew in from Houston to sunny Tucson. I met Buddy and Trish at the airport gate and escorted them to their hotel where we met with the Chapter Cadre for a bit of camaraderie, to review the evening’s events and, of course, to enjoy a glass of what else, but wine! It has been a long while since we were graced by a Grand Commander at an Assemblage so it was a welcome addition to our event.

country and being planned in the future. The Grand Commander then elevated Bill Oates to the position of Chapter Commander with the proper amount of ceremony before turning the enthronement of new members over to Commander Oates.

New members Miki and Craig Jackson own and operate a professional health and fitness business. They travel often to the Pacific Northwest to enjoy the best of Oregon and Washington State Pinot Noirs and other fine wines from the area where they were raised. Miki and Craig’s wine knowledge is displayed in their extensive wine bar and collection in their new home located at the edge of the Catalina Mountains bordering the north part of Tucson. Any closer to the mountains from their driveway and you will need climbing gear! Both love wine and sharing their new wine discoveries with friends and family. This wonderful and sincere couple is a welcome addition to our chapter.

Debra Imus, fondly known as Debbie, is married to Knight Gary Imus. They share a huge wine cellar, hidden off their kitchen through a private entrance. To Debbie’s surprise, she was given the gift of membership by her husband and the look on her face as she heard her name called to be knighted was priceless.

Although stunned after hearing her name called, Debbie proudly, and with a big smile, made her way to Chapter Commander Bill Oates to be inducted. Debbie was clearly pleased to become a Gentle Lady and part of the

This home is off the grid, with stupendous views of the mountains, and was constructed with many recycled materials. Debra Hendrix was also surprised when she heard her name called for induction into our chapter. I know Debra as she – like me - works for American Airlines in Tucson. I see Deb each time I commute to Dallas from Tucson and always look forward to her smile, sense of humor and her love of wine.

Because of her appreciation of wine, I introduced Debra to our Chapter Commander, and now the two of them spend quality time enjoying wine and each other’s company.

It is quite satisfying to introduce two fine people to each other who share a mutual love of wine. Deb relishes time away from work and there is no better way to enjoy quality time than with a fellow wine enthusiast.

The evening concluded after enjoying a four-course meal, with hand selected wines by Mr. Eb Wilkinson, our resident wine expert and Chapter Master Ambassador. A delightful evening was had by all!

Grand Assemblage

On 18 October 2014, the Gulf Coast Chapter held its 13th Assemblage. We returned again to Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. We had a good turnout for the occasion with about 24 people in attendance.

Along with the induction of new members by Master Commander Morris Strickland and the Cadre, several members were raised within the ranks. First was Gentle Lady Arlene Wall who was elevated to Master Councilor followed by former Master Commander of the Low Country Chapter (Georgia), Janice Hall, who came to us by way of the Monterey Peninsula Chapter. She was welcomed into our Chapter and elevated to Master Photographer. We are especially glad to have her available to document our events! Those of us who had been doing this … including this author … truly appreciate her talent and willingness to assume this position!

The new inductees that we had were as follows: BG (Ret) Richard Moss, who did nicely in the testing of the waters and the wines, and came through with flying colors!

Next to be inducted, by way of Keesler Air Force Base, was Christopher Skully, whose wife, Susan Aiola-Skully,

is a Colonel and stationed there. Chris has a consulting firm in Washington, D.C. Following Chris was Michael Sunderman, who, along with his wife, Mary, publishes a local monthly magazine about the people of the coastal area of Mississippi. Great reading!

Last but by no means least, was the induction of BG Patrick Higby, Commander of the 81st Training Wing at Keesler, as an honorary member, since military people don’t usually stay at one facility for a lengthy time.

On 13 December, our Chapter held its annual Christmas party at the Strickland home with 32 members and guests attending. As in the past we asked everyone to bring dry and canned goods for a homeless shelter soup kitchen that we contribute to every year. All those in attendance enjoyed the great camaraderie as well as the abundance of good food, and of course, great wine.

Every family was given a small loaf of pumpkin bread to take home and enjoy. Thanks to everyone’s generosity, and in the spirit of the season, we had a couple of hundred pounds to donate to this most worthy need in our

community. Morris Strickland was pleased to be able to make the delivery to the shelter the following week.

Our next Assemblage will be April 11. It is being moved to the spring rather than the fall in an effort to avoid the conflicts that seem to confront us. You see, fall is football and football in the South is very important to the folks around here!

Wines of

America1 Part

“For the glory of the vines and wines of America, I proclaim thee Knight of our Order.�

These are the words spoken when each of us were knighted.

But, just what do they mean?

The vines and wines of America...

North America is blessed to have more indigenous species of grape vines than any other continent.

In fact, when the Vikings were first exploring the Northeastern coasts, they found such prolific vines growing there, they named the land Vineland.

Although unconfirmed, Sir Walter Raleigh reported seeing full barrels of what was thought to be local wines being loaded onto ships during his exploratory visits in the late 1500s to the established Spanish ports of today’s Florida. And it has been documented that the French Huguenots, who had settled there, were making wine from the indigenous Muscadine vines in 1564 around the area now known as Jacksonville, Florida.

When the British began their exploration of the continent, one of their underlying missions was to source out grapes and supply the Mother Country with the wine they had begun to enjoy, but were no longer able to obtain from their opponents during the many warring years. The first documented wine made in an English settlement was in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1609 -- about twenty gallons made from hedge vines. However, the European palate did not favor these wines made from indigenous vines. Therefore, the first European vines arrived in the colonies in 1611, along with French and Italian immigrants to tend the vines.

Vitis vinifera did not fare well in the colonies at that time because of the harsh winters, humidity, various fungal diseases, and most of all from the then unknown phylloxera louse.

However, from these attempts at growing vinifera, there were some natural hybridizations of varieties.

Among them, the Alexander grape (discovered by James Alexander, the gardener of William Penn’s son) growing in Philadelphia soon rose to the top in popularity, and began to be widely planted. The first commercial vineyard and winery in the United States was established in 1793 by Pierre Legaux outside of Philadelphia. Other commercial vineyards were established in many states and planted predominantly with the Alexander grape.

Still looking for better wines, there were continual hybridization experiments trying to develop the perfect grape varieties for the New World. In 1816, the Isabella varietal was first introduced and the Catawba in 1823. These became the dominant grapes for the growing wine industry of the time and were planted in all of the states as well as what would become California and in Europe. The Catawba grape became the dominant grape, and was widely planted in New York and Ohio, where it was mostly made into America’s first “Champagne”.

Small vineyards and wineries proliferated, as did grapevine nurserymen, hybridizers, and viticultural authors. By 1859, there were 1,627,000 gallons of wine made in the 39 states; 35% in Ohio and 15% in California, which made Ohio the largest wine producing state prior to the Civil War.

The mid-19th century was the golden age in eastern viticulture, especially with the new varietal discoveries. Among the new varietals were the Dutchess and Delaware, and the Norton/Cynthiana for red wines.

A seedling first isolated in 1843 in Concord, Massachusetts was further developed and made its debut as the Concord at the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, becoming the ‘best overall grape variety’ in 1865.

In 1870, a Prohibitionist dentist, Dr. Thomas Welch, introduced his “Unfermented Wine.” More and more Concord was then planted to support this new demand, and this grape and its flavors have evolved to become ubiquitous to grape flavorings from juices, jams, jellies, soda pop, gum, lip gloss, candy, etc.

The Golden Eagle Winery on Middle Bass Island in Lake Erie was the largest winery in the United States in 1871, producing over 500,000 gallons. In 1873, a Great Western Champagne from New York became the first American “Champagne” to win a gold medal in Europe when it was placed in a competition at the Vienna Exposition. This competition also awarded a gold medal to an American wine made from Norton, which verified the grape as one of the best in the world. Also in the 1870s, Virginia Dare was introduced. This wine was named after the first English child born in the colonies and was a blend of Scuppernong, Concord and other neutral juices. This became the most popular wine in the United States from the turn of the 20th century until Prohibition, ultimately producing ten million gallons annually from wineries located in six eastern states.

During the late 19th century, California began to flourish and began producing a flood of low-priced wines that competed with the eastern market, weakening the demand for local wines. Also, at this time the Prohibition movement was beginning to grow in the Southern states and many counties were beginning to vote “dry.” Thus many of the fledgling vineyards and wineries were put out of business and began to disappear.

Ratification of the 18th Amendment on January 29, 1919 (effective one year after ratification) in effect ended the wine industry in the United States. Only a few large wineries survived by converting to grape juice processing or the production of legal wines used in religious services or medicinal tonics, but for the most part, the wine boom was over.

How did the wine industry recover after Prohibition ended? Well, the rest of the story will be told in the next issue of The Arbor.

San Francisco Assemblage

at Buena Vista Winery

The San Francisco Chapter enjoyed a number of KOV and FICB related events during the latter half of 2014 and hosted its first solo Assemblage in five years!

We held our Assemblage in late September at the beautiful and historic Buena Vista Winery in Sonoma.

We inducted one new Knight, two Gentle Ladies, two Master Knights and one Supreme Knight. This was with the support of the many national officers in attendance including our Grand Commander Buddy Hagner, and his wife Trish, Carol and Don Bade, Executive Director and Grand Treasurer, respectively, and Peter Bosco, the Provost General of the Northwestern United States.

The evening was memorable for many reasons, one of which was the attendance of the newly elected President of the FICB, Alan Bryden and his lovely wife Laurence, both visiting from Paris who had traveled to meet with the 2016 FICB Congress Organizing Committee and visit potential sites. Alan was inducted as a Master Knight of our order.

Mark Randol, from the DC area originally and kindly referred to us by Ken Haapala’s chapter in the Nation’s Capital, was inducted as a Knight. He was subjected to the cruel test of the “Water and Wine” and performed admirably.

We proudly inducted Heather Browning and Jill Pingitore as Gentle Ladies. Both are already veteran Congress attendees. They were blindfolded and forced to endure the test of the “Wine Method”. Again, these candidates were able to pass their tests and enter our Brotherhood.

Paul Maroon, a vintner and owner of Maroon Vineyards in Napa, was inducted as a Master Knight of our order and happily participated in the “Test of the Wine Varietal” by correctly identifying the wine in his glass! We are already looking forward to sharing his Maroon Wines in the near future at a Vintner Dinner.

Last but not least, we were privileged to induct JeanCharles Boisset as a Supreme Knight. Jean-Charles is not only the owner of Buena Vista Winery, but is also the President of Boisset, La Famille des Grands Vins, France’s third largest wine group and largest producer in Burgundy. Decanter magazine has recognized JeanCharles as #24 among its “Power List” of the most influential people in the world of wine. He also owns Raymond Vineyards in Napa and DeLoach Vineyards in Russian River Valley among others in the US. Jean-Charles personally led guests through the Buena Vista tasting room, sharing some of the history of the oldest premium winery in California, founded by Count Haraszthy in 1857.

After the ceremony, we moved to the Cave Room, and were treated to a fabulous dinner paired with the Buena Vista wines, carefully chosen

by Jean-Charles himself. Music by a jazz combo played in the background. As if the star power wasn’t already high enough, Jean-Charles’ wife, Gina Gallo, granddaughter of Julio Gallo and wine maker of the Premium Gallo wines, joined us for dinner, having just escaped the vineyards (this was, after all, in the middle of harvest season!). What a privilege to have the opportunity to get to know these generous people and to be able to share our love of wine with others who share the same passion.

Our Chapter is excited to have five new members to induct at our next Assemblage which is already being planned. We extend an invitation to all to make plans now to attend on November 7, 2015 when we gather for our Assemblage at the exquisite Raymond Vineyards in Napa Valley.

HOL IDAY SOIReE To close out the year, Gentle Lady Andi Pingitore and Knight Scooter Blacklock hosted us at their lovely home in Noe Valley, overlooking the lower San Francisco Bay. With holiday decorations in the background, we enjoyed a blind tasting of a Sonoma Cabernet and a Napa Cabernet against a South African Cabernet, which was hand crafted by Supreme Lady Zelma Long. A California Grenache was added to the mix for fun. It was not an easy task to discern the origins, but everyone enjoyed the exercise and was surprised to find the answers.

There are rumors that this may become an annual end of season happening!

Houston

IT’S HAPPENING IN HOUSTON! The temperatures in August may be hot in Houston, but when the Houston Chapter gathered for its Annual Business Meeting and Wine Dinner, it was in a nice 65degree wine warehouse. Who would think coats would be in style that time of year? Forty-nine members gathered to review all the events of the past year and make plans for the future, all the while enjoying the “leftovers” of wine from the KOV cellar. Wines were served familystyle on the table, and the members brought appetizers, salads, entrées or desserts to share. It was an amazing array of food offerings and it was obvious that some talented “chefs” had created these masterpieces which were beautiful and, more importantly, delicious!

On September 24, we went to Luigi’s Cucina Italiana to dine on a four-course Italian dinner of Antipasto, Rigatoni ai Pesto (rigatoni pasta with pesto sauce, served with grilled lamb sausage), Cotoletta alla Milanese (sautéed, breaded veal chop with Marsala porcini mushrooms over risotto) and Dolci (sinfully delicious dessert). These courses were paired with Villa Trasqua wines which included 2011 “Traluna” Toscana; 2008 “Fanatico” Chi-

anti Classico Reserva; 2010 “Evoluto” Chianti Classico; and 2007 “Nerento” Chianti Classico Reserva. Gordon Palmateer and Jarett Gollaway, who represent these delicious Tuscan wines, were with us for the evening to share tasting notes with the 34 Knights, Gentle Ladies and guests who were present.

The following month, it was time to hope for a little Fall weather and we were fortunate enough to find it! Gathering at the lovely home of Knight and Gentle Lady Jim and Merrilyn Skelton on October 24, 50 members and guests tasted wines by Napa winemaker, Brian Graham. These wines included his 9.19 wines, which are a homage to his daughter’s birthday, with an etched bottle that features angel wings wrapped around the bottle. We enjoyed 2012 White Blend “Deux Blancs”; 2012 Chardonnay “El Dorado”; 2012 Chardonnay “Suisun Valley”; 2012 Chardonnay “Sonoma Coast” RRV; and 2011 Pinot Noir “Sonoma Coast” RRV, plus the Brick Angel 2010 Red Blend “Littlefoot” out of Napa.

Everyone brought small bites to share and the table was laden with fabulous food options!

Can wine be scary? Well, the Houston Ladies of the Knight decided to find out when they got together at the home of Gentle Lady Jan Johnson on October 26. Most of the ladies arrived in costume and with scary treats in tow. It took some great shopping to come up with these “season-appropriate” wines which, when paired with the creatively-designed treats, led us to determined that the only tricks would be how to tell those who couldn’t make it what a great time they missed! The Ladies may take their wine seriously, but they never take themselves too seriously.

The Holiday Season found us, once again, at the beautifully-decorated and ready-for-the- holidays home of Knight Lee Slataper and his Lady, Laura. With Commander Buddy Hagner and Gentle Lady Michelle Wise pouring an array of wines in the “summer kitchen” (with heaters going!), and a holiday feast in the dining room, there was plenty of room for the 50 Knights, Gentle Ladies and guests to spread out.

The South African wines and South African-inspired menu was a hit. A sampling of the menu included Bobotie with Mrs. Ball’s Chutney and African Yellow Rice as well as boiled shrimp, meatballs, spinach hand pies, cheeses and a variety of desserts. The seven wines offered during the evening were 2014 Iona Sauvignon Blanc (Elgin); 2013 Rietvallei “Unoaked” Chardonnay (Robertson); 2013 Mr. P Pinot Noir (Elgin); 2012 Ridgeback “SGMV” Red Blend (Paarl); 2012 Ridgeback “Journey” Red Blend (Paarl); 2012 Ridgeback Cabernet Franc (Paarl); and the 2013 Rietvallei Red Muscadel (Robertson).

Next up for Houston will be the 2015 Assemblage Weekend to be held at the Royal Sonesta Hotel January 24 – 26 with winemaker Andrew Jones and other dignitaries! It is definitely something to be looking forward to in the New Year and Houston welcomes all Knights and Gentle Ladies and their guests from across the land to be with us for that, and all of our special events!

Assemblage in Tampere Vinoteque

The 2014 ceremony was hosted by the Tampere section of the Brotherhood. The ceremony is always exciting especially for the candidates to be knighted, and this was evident also this time even if the event took place in the pleasant environment of Tampere Vinoteque. The tradition dictates that the candidates must not drink any wine before the ceremony is completed, even if the knights and guests are served wine generously.

There were in total 38 candidates, knights and their guests. The interest to join in the brotherhood has been growing in the recent years. This time the candidates were Ms. Niina Mets채l채, Mr. Seppo Hannikainen, Mr. Arttu Kalli, Mr. Timo Martikainen, Mr. Jussi Okkonen, Mr. Niilo Oksa, Mr. Jarmo Piilola, and Mr. Olavi Vanninen. All of them passed the demanding tasks and wine-related questions asked. We inducted our second Gentle Lady, and seven new Knights.

The songs and music for the evening were performed by remarkable gentlemen Vesa Penttil채 and Teppo Karell. They led the participants, the officers in front, from Tampere Vinoteque to Restaurant Tiiliholvi, a couple of hundred meters away. Even though the way was not long when walking on the street, troubadours playing in front, the officers wearing their special garment, and the rest of the people in tuxedos and dresses clearly drew attention from the accidental encounters with people of different ages. Young people playing guitar and talking in groups were especially pleased to see this special occasion.

The quality of the dinner matched the rest of the evening excellently, including special dishes and matching wine. After the dinner was finished around 10 PM, the evening continued again in Tampere Vinoteque where people could taste more wine, even some beer from

a local microbrewery, and time passed quickly. Commander Emeritus Timo Jokinen found special treats for the fittest knights who still could have another tasting at 1 AM. The wines tasted included New Beginnings, a wine produced in a grape growing project initiated

by Nelson Mandela. Another special wine was one that Timo himself had mixed last year in Tuscany, based on Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This wine, labeled as a wine from Zonin family winery, will be on sale this spring, but only in South-East Asia. As a whole, the evening was a great success, one of the best during the existence of KOV Finland.

FICB International Congress ~ UPDATE The FICB held its annual meetings in Paris January 30-31, 2015. I attended all three meetings as a member of the Board, Administrative Council and a presenter at the General Assembly on behalf of the KOV and other US Brotherhoods. What follows is a summary of the proceedings.

This was the first meeting presided over by Alan Bryden who assumed the role of President in June 2014 following the Congress in Reims. He introduced his new Secretary General, Laurence Guillon of Geneva and Alan Huet as the new Treasurer, replacing Anky Colaris of the Netherlands who remains on the Administrative Council. Some of you may have had the opportunity to meet Alan Huet as one of the principle organizers of the 2014 Reims Congress hosted by the Conseil des Echanson. These are two very capable individuals who will support Alan’s presidency greatly.

As is customary, Alan presented his “State of the FICB” report. He praised the organizers of the Reims Congress for a very successful event whose budget broke even and provided the FICB with approximately 2280 Euros in royalties. Alan pointed out his desire to make the FICB web page more relevant and interesting. It has already been updated with much of what I am reporting to you in this article. However, he lamented the lack of “hits” per day and would like to see that increased to attract more Associate members who may be willing to pay dues to expose their businesses to all of the Brotherhood membership. Check out the latest news at www.winebrotherhoods.org. It is also imperative that the member Brotherhoods keep their own pages current and relevant since the FICB page has direct links to the member entities. There is a move afoot to have the pages linked to Facebook and other appropriate social media.

Alan announced the addition of two new Brotherhoods, and, regretfully the loss of three. Therefore, no growth has occurred in 2014. Alan has spoken to at least three new Brotherhoods from Romania, Moldova and one in Paris, who have all indicated some interest in membership. Alan has been communicating with some of the more prestigious French Brotherhoods such as La Jorade de St Emillion and La Confrerie St Etienne of Alsace as well as some South American wine enterprises who are not familiar with the concept of Brotherhoods. A challenge has been issued to the vice presidents of each country to recruit one new brotherhood in lieu of increasing annual dues.

Speaking of dues, the 2014 Budget of the FICB was positive 1510 Euros, thanks in large part to the royalties received from the Congress in Reims. The 2015 Budget is likely to be negative without increased recruitment of Brotherhoods or some cost cutting (which is difficult given the bare bones expense budget currently in place of only 6500 Euros). Alan has vowed to work on this for the rest of 2015 as well the recruitment of larger corporate sponsors in an effort to improve the financial status of the FICB. The General Assembly wholeheartedly endorsed and approved a new International Charter of Wine Brotherhoods that outlines very nicely the Mission and Vision of the FICB and its membership. The Charter can be seen on the FICB Web page.

A new Certificate of Membership was introduced. This will be sent annually to each dues paying member for display in their office.

Also introduced was a new Certificate of Honor to be bestowed upon individuals who have contributed significantly to the success of the FICB and who have

helped to spread information on the love of wine. The first certificates were given to Claude Josse, Monique Josse, Claude Ruffini, Manual Duran, retiring past vice president for Spain, and Karl Recer, retiring Slovenian vice president. Additional certificates were bestowed on Jean Paul de Bernis, one of the outgoing France vice presidents as well as Jean Emile Provost of France who is retiring and being replaced by a handpicked successor for northern France, Paul Dalon, whom many of you will meet in June 2016 in the US. Pictures of the recipients can be seen on the FICB web site.

There was some discussion on finding a new sash or epaulette that could be worn by the vice presidents of the FICB at Congress processions, signifying their position. These would be designed to be worn over the vice president’s own Brotherhood apparel. More information will follow on this topic.

I then proceeded to update everyone on the preparations for the 2016 Congress in Napa/Sonoma. The presentation was well-received and enthusiastically supported by all present. I pointed out that for the Congress to be a success; the KOV needs at least 50-75 attendees from outside the US. A formal Specification Agreement has been signed and agreed to by Alan Bryden on behalf of the FICB and Buddy Hagner for the KOV. We are on our way. Look for an update with more detail elsewhere in this issue of THE ARBOR. Finally, a brief presentation was made by Ilija Malinkovski, the Macedonia Ambassador to the Netherlands, formally requesting permission to organize and present a program at next year’s meeting for Congress 2018 in Macedonia. The General Assembly approved the request and looks forward to details.

Next year’s meeting is scheduled for January 29-30, 2016. It should be noted that any member in good standing of a participating Brotherhood of the FICB is entitled to attend the General Assembly meeting, which is always followed by a wonderful luncheon and wines from various participating countries. Paris is a most interesting city at any time of the year and the lines at museums are much shorter and hotels and flights are cheaper in winter! I would like to encourage you to consider attending.

KOV TO HOST 2016 CONGRESS Following the KOV national meeting’s “mandate to pursue” on May 3, 2014, the 2016 Congress Organizing Committee has been hard at work, developing plausible scenarios and seeking sites for hosting an International Congress in Napa/Sonoma in June 2016.

Trish and Buddy Hagner, Don Bade, Morris Strickland and Pat Pingitore have been meeting telephonically on a monthly basis, visiting and interviewing venues, event organizers, hotels, vintners associations, possible sponsors, etc., as well as hosting Alan and Laurence Bryden last September for five days when we were able to review, with them, some of our findings.

We now have a formally signed document, called the “Specification,” between Grand Commander Buddy Hagner, on behalf of the KOV, and Alan Bryden, as President of the FICB. This document outlines the basic requirements of a Congress and is the guiding document for the Organizing Committee. As in previous Congresses, certain elements are essential. The Congress will open with a Academic Session and will also include a Wines of the World Event, a procession and Mass and, of course, meals and wine tastings.

To date we have been very successful on a number of fronts. The Congress will take place June 8-12, 2016 and the extension follows, June 12-14, 2016. All participants will be staying at either the Hyatt Vineyard Creek or Courtyard by Marriott, which are located side by side near downtown Santa Rosa, California. Both the Congress and extension will emanate from the same hotels.

The contracts are currently being finalized.

All registrations will be coordinated by Destination Southwest, who will manage the registration website, review contracts, and assist registrants (as will the Hyatt Concierge) in finding agents to provide transfers from airports, extended stays, side trips, etc. The contract with Destination Southwest has been signed and they are actively engaged reviewing our potential venue contracts.

The registration process will be via a page on the KOV. org website, which is being designed with the help of Chris Bosco, our web master. The registration should be open by mid-July 2015. Restrictions may be placed on total numbers initially to allow an International presence. Due to venue capacities, registration will be limited, unfortunately, to 200-225 persons.

As plans develop, updates will be made on the KOV website. We encourage all members to provide the KOV National Office (kov-office@kov.org) with a current email address so members can be notified of information and updates regarding the 2016 Congress.

We are happy to announce that a contract for the first day’s Academic Session, an appellation tasting and luncheon have been finalized with the Culinary Institute of America in St. Helena. The CIA’s historic Barrel Room will be the perfect location to begin what is sure to be an exciting time as our Brotherhood hosts the World.

Gourmet food and fine wine descended upon Macchia Winery as Lodi Knights of the Vine joined in collaboration with the Lodi Amateur Vintners Association (LAVA) to stage their inaugural 2014 Harvest Moon Homage, held in September.

Touted as a Food and Wine Social Event, the affair brought together the culinary talents of KOV chefs-dujour whose dishes were paired with wines crafted and selected by LAVA participants. Attendance rose to 140 as members and guests of both organizations strolled, sipped and sampled their way about the grounds of the iconic Lodi winery.

In all, 17 tables featured gourmet bites that were served alongside hand crafted wines. Among many, there were mouthwatering creations like Rootbeer Ribs with Zininfused BBQ Sauce paired with Zinfandel, Beet Risotto with Seared Scallops and dill sauce served alongside Irongate Field Blend, Pork Tenderloin on Baguette with grilled pineapple and sweet-sour Chipotle served with Barbera, Avocado & Tomato Spread with Shrimp Topping on a Crostini paired with White Verdot and a Viognier, and Salted Pretzel Caramel Chocolates paired with Petite Syrah, just to name a few.

A portion of the event’s proceedings were donated toward scholarships in conjunction with Ironstone Foundation, presided over by Gentle Lady Gail Kautz. She was presented with a check for $1,500.

“All in all, it was a great event and we will do more events with LAVA,” according to Sandy Tudor.

Lodi Assemblage & Enthronement Dinner When it comes to pairing a festive Fall evening with friends, food and fine wine, no one does it with more style and delicious flavors than the Lodi Chapter of the Brotherhood of the Knights of the Vine!

On October 18th, Lodi members and invited guests gathered at Woodbridge Golf & Country Club for their Fall Assemblage & Enthronement Dinner where attendees were greeted with a glass of Harmony Wyneland’s California Sparkling Wine and passed hors d’oeuvres.

Guitarist Bill Russell performed a variety of original smooth jazz melodies that paired superbly with the chatty atmosphere as old friends mingled with new members. And in his usual style, Master Commander John Tudor was busy working the room with a big smile and making sure the glasses were always full!

Presiding over the 2014 Enthronement Ceremony were Master Commander Tudor and Supreme Knight Bradley Alderson. “Knights of the Vine is about enjoying wine, enjoying food and enjoying company!” declared Alderson to rousing applause.

In all, five new members were brought into the chapter: Knights George Lerner, Jr., Gary Daniel, Jeremy Lenser, Frank Haversack III, and Gentle Lady Angelina Gervasi.

Over the years, Ms. Gervasi has skillfully photographed events for the Lodi Chapter and her photos have often appeared on the covers of The Arbor.

Following the enthronement, guests were welcomed by the General Manager of Woodbridge Golf & Country Club, Ernest M. Micelli, who was presented with a spe-

Micelli then introduced Executive Chef Gerbi Didier, who described the evening’s four-course gourmet dinner menu and wine pairings, which included Roasted Tomato and Garlic Beef Consume, Shrimp Stuffed Sole with a Champagne buerre blanc over grilled Brocolini (paired with Harney Lane 2013 Albarino), Herb Roasted Beef Tenderloin over Celery Root Mashed Potatoes and a Chanterelle Mushroom Demi (Klinker Brick 2012 Farrah Syrah), and Frisee and Arugula Salad with roasted Pears accompanied

by Camembert and candied pecans. For dessert, guests enjoyed Crème Brulee served with fresh berries with a lovely Sobermesa produced by St. Jorge Winery.

As always, the evening was a tasteful success and all were pleased with the delicious pairing of the wines with the meal. To that end, it was Chef Didier who concluded, “It’s totally about the people and place that make the perfect pairing.”

Palm Desert Escape & Knighting Ceremony The image of a desert calls to mind a parched land devoid of life-sustaining vegetation. That may be true of the Sahara, the Negev, or the Gobi, but it certainly is not what the visitor to Palm Desert, California would behold. Here, in the very same vicinity where Frank, Dean and Sammy would pal around decades ago, the vegetation is lush and the visual images breathtaking.

OC Havin’ Fun with The Eagles and Beatles in Concert The vast majority of the Orange County Chapter of the Knights of the Vine clan grew up in the sixties. (If you recall the sixties with clarity, you really were not there, the saying goes). So we have fond memories of bell bottom pants and tie-dyed shirts and the music of that era. Not surprisingly, when the tickets to The Eagles concert at the Mission San Juan Capistrano in July 2014 were announced, we were first in the queue to shell out the cash to get those front row seats. Actually, we did not sit in the front row seats, but at a civilized round table where we could share our gourmet pot luck and the band was not really The Eagles but rather what has become known as a tribute band. The wine was real, however, and we were treated to a number of our group’s favorite varietals, compelling evidence that our wine palate has been refined over the years. We danced late into the night and departed for home still exuding our enthusiasm for these ballads of our youth, as well as the very best product of world class vineyards.

Talk of a Beatles reunion invariably resounds from time to time as devotees of the 1964 British invasion nostalgically recall. On stage at our reprise of the Mission San Juan Capistrano concert hall in August 2014, we were challenged to distinguish the musical production of the tribute band members to the game-changing music of the original Fab Four.

It was, alas, no reunion of the British quartet that revolutionized music, but it was yet another reunion of the Orange County Knights of the Vine!

As we have done a number of times past, laden with carts groaning under the weight of our culinary delights, we made our way to the dining area where we could feast and savor the natural creations of carefully cultivated vineyards of the finest varietals.

And, by the way, the music was pretty good after all.

We mariners know that, at sea, letters of a vessel have significance. For example, HMS means His Majesty’s Ship (or Her Majesty’s Ship). USS means United States Ship and SV means Sailing Vessel. This abbreviation is followed by the vessel’s name. Consider the USS Constitution also known as “Old Ironsides,” the oldest (1774) commissioned warship in the US Navy. But I digress. In August 2014, we were treated to a voyage aboard the DV LOTS OF LOVE an unknown DV vessel skippered by Knight Bill Losee. The DV stands for Duffy Vessel which, as you may know, is a 12-passenger vessel powered by electricity. The skipper of the LOTS OF LOVE Knight John Moreiko , replete with parrot on shoulder and Bill, ably navigated the often treacherous shoals of the Newport Beach harbor with considerable skill that only comes with years of experience under the most trying conditions.

We, the crew, hardly noticed because we were constantly marveling at the wines brought on board for the afternoon sojourn. Coupled with the delicious hors d’oeuvres that were served and the convivial fellowship of the crew, this was an afternoon which we plan to replicate this year and many years to come.

The Orange County Chapter of the Knights of the Vine accepts very seriously its responsibility for the evaluation of wines, with which many in the region eagerly anticipate its pronouncements. Rivaling the 1976 Judgment of Paris in impact, our Master of the Cellar, Bill Losee guided us expertly in the grading of the wines brought, which were, Sextant Zinfandel Wheelhouse 2011, Tobin James 2012 Zinfandel “Ballistic,” 2011 Moss Roxx “Ancient Vines,” Oak Ridge Old Vine 2011, Bogle “Old Vine Zinfandel” 2012, and Seghesio “Old Vine Zinfandel” 2012, Sonoma County. The surprise winner was Moss Roxx Zinfandel. All had characteristics that challenged our palate and offered wondrous flavors!

The 15th Annual RATE THE REDS TASTING was held at the elegant lakeside home of Jim and Sue Grether on September 27, 2014. Dedicated members Barb Losee, and Jon and Mary Greer provided an array of wonderful dishes complimenting these extraordinary wines which were paired to enhance the intensity and enjoyment of the wines presented.

Unlike the infamous Odette Kahn, the French wine judge who demanded her ballot be rescinded after the blind tasting results were announced (which, as history records, offered compelling evidence that a surprising number of our California wines were superior to those of the French), no such uproar was noted at the Grethers as we “rated our reds” and shared our observations with our KOV brethren.

We continued our traditional Pier Party held at Stillwater Cove in Pebble Beach which was a huge success with a “sold out” crowd of 120 people attending. We enjoyed music by Alligator, oysters on the half shell, salmon on thin sliced bread, appetizers provided by Chef Didier Dutertre, BBQ steak and sausages, salads and desserts by Chef Wendy Brodie, plus a variety of wines from our KOV cellar. It was a fabulous afternoon.

A WIKED AFFAIR featuring Spanish Tapas and Wines was presented by the owner of Monduka in Carmel. Finger foods were accompanied by six different wines culminating with a main course of live fire paella cooked on the patio by Chef Brandon Miller.

The event was entertaining and educational to which we say “Salud”!

Monterey

Our chapter continues to hold popular educational events for smaller groups under the acronym WIKED Affairs which stands for Wine, Information, Knowledge, Education, and Discovery. A cooking demonstration by KOV Member Didier Dutertre showed us how to prepare steamed seafood, eggplant parmigiana and coq au vin. KOV member Chef Wendy Brodie prepared beef tenderloin with pepper coffee sauce and goat cheese, and cheese cake. All the food items were prepared in sufficient quantity to feed all 30+ attendees and were paired with appropriate wines. The event was held at Chef Wendy’s home.

The Monterey, California Chapter of KOV is proud to announce the formal establishment of the annual Steve Pessagno Memorial Scholarship at California State Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo.

The scholarship was awarded for the first time in Fall 2014. The award is for $3,000 per year and will be awarded to one or split between two junior or senior students in the University’s undergraduate Wine and Viticulture Department. Located in the heart of California’s coastal wine regions, this department uniquely integrates three fundamental components of the modern wine industry, a curriculum emphasizing the inherent connectivity between wine grape growing in the vineyard, wine making in the in the winery, and wine selling in the market place. The Monterey Chapter is proud of this partnership to support students and help develop future leaders of the industry.

MEMBERS IN MONTEREY CHAPTER

On Saturday February 14th the Salinas Valley River Road wineries had their annual Passport event. It was the first public appearance of the Wines of Monterey County quilt that our chapter is raffling for the Steven L. Pessagno Memorial Scholarship Fund. We will be displaying the quilt and selling raffle tickets at various tasting rooms and wine events throughout the summer. The drawing for the winner will occur at our annual Pier Party at Stillwater Cove in October.

AUSTIN CHAPTER

The much-anticipated new Fall Creek Vineyards at Driftwood location opened this year, 2015, in celebration of the 40th year since Ed and Susan Auler planted their first experimental vineyard in the Texas Hill Country at Tow. Located on FM 1826, Driftwood, Texas, the winery sits directly across the road from the legendary Salt Lick BBQ and Salt Lick Vineyards; which is home to a significant portion of grapes destined to be Fall Creek Vineyards wine.

The Aulers have become known as the, “First Family of Texas Wines”.

This second FCV Driftwood location features an elegant Hill Country estate on 17 beautiful, rolling acres adjacent to Onion Creek and is well-situated to become a tasting destination for both wine collectors and locals alike. New vineyard plantings will begin Spring, 2015, and Director of Winemaking, Sergio Cuadra, anticipates excellent crops from the well-drained land underlain with limestone.

Driftwood itself is rapidly becoming a food and beverage mecca in its own right, with a growing number of wineries, breweries, distilleries and restaurants.

It is a mere 25 minute drive from Austin, yet feels like a peaceful country getaway.

Delicious small plates

by Austin’s highly acclaimed Chef David Garrido, are offered Wednesday through Sunday, and the newly-renovated tasting room carries gift items and artisanal foods. With its lush acreage and picturesque estate, the winery is a perfectly suited venue to host weddings, private dinners and select events.

The tasting room has a wide selection of Fall Creek wines for tasting and purchase by the glass, bottle or case. As a special feature, several single-vineyard designation wines from the new “Terroir Reflections Series” are showcased.

This series, created by FCV Director of Winemaking, Sergio Cuadra, made its debut with the release of the 2013 FALL Creek Vineyards Chardonnay, Certenberg Vineyard, Texas Hill Country and the 2012 FALL CREEK Vineyards Tempranillo, Salt Lick Vineyards, Texas Hill Country.

THE NEWS LODI CHAPTER

A Tribute to the Troops - John Kautz, a Supreme Knight in the Lodi (CA) Chapter, and his family recently received approval to erect a 7-foot-tall bronze statue at Micke Grove Park in Lodi. The statue is meant to honor all veterans. “Our servicemen simply do not get the recognition for the sacrifices they’ve endured,” John said. The statue will be mounted on a 13-ton stone and is planned to be located on a small hill that park patrons will be able to see from their cars as they drive along a roundabout at the entrance of the park. A large United States flag will be placed in front of the statue.

A brick wall will surround the statue and be engraved with the names of fallen soldiers, including John’s brother and uncle, both of whom were killed during World War II. He said his family has always wanted to do something in their honor in Lodi, but has never had the opportunity to do so; a statue at Micke Grove Park would provide that opportunity.

In addition, the Kautz family will pave a new disabled parking lot across the street from the park entryway, giving disabled veterans the opportunity to approach the statue as well as providing 100 percent of the funding to include additional tables, benches and barbecue pits for park patrons.

John hopes to have the statue in place in time to be unveiled at a Memorial Day event at the park this May. The Lodi News-Sentinel ran a recently front page article on Mark Chandler, a Supreme Knight in the Lodi (CA) Chapter, who serves on the Lodi City Council and was recently elected Vice Mayor. The article highlighted his focus on tourism, business and the Amgen Tour which is the greatest tourism opportunity Lodi has ever had. Mark is a fourth generation resident of San Joaquin County and a seventh-generation Californian having lived in Lodi since 1991. Until 2011, Mark was the Winegrape Commission executive director.

India Adams

You’ve heard of ghost writers, but what about ghost singers? India Adams is a not-so-secret singer now, but you can bet she was sworn to secrecy when she sang for Joan Crawford in the Technicolor musical “Torch Song” and for Cyd Charisse in “The Band Wagon.” Secrecy was a stipulation of India’s contract with MGM studios.

And she’s still singing. She’s headlined at LA’s famed Catalina Bar and Grill on Sunset Boulevard to packed rooms as recently as 2013. These days she’s in rehearsal for a cabaret/theatre show with Annette Warren (who sang for Ava Gardner in “Show Boat”). And later this month she’ll be filming a small part in a new movie.

India, who grew up in LA, has been singing her whole life. “’It is the only thing I wanted to be,’ Adams says.”

Here’s more of that quote from an article in the LA Times, 1/14/11: “’I started singing in clubs when I was in high school. I had a friend in school who had a little three-piece band and he said if I went out with him one night, he would let me sing. I sang and the boss offered me a job but he could only afford to have me for two nights. I said, “If I didn’t charge him for the other two nights, could I work there. He said, ‘alright.’ Then I just started working clubs in town.”

India Adams is simply an inspiration and proof that doing what you love will keep you engaged for a lifetime.

And that’s where MGM found her. She’s sung in New York nightclubs, Radio City Music Hall and the Latin Quarter’ in musical shows such as “Can-Can,” “The Most Happy Fella” and “Silk Stockings,” and in London, where she was the featured singer on many BBC shows. She appeared in cabaret throughout England and Scotland and the Continent, and was the stand-by for Ginger Rogers in “Mame” at London’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Speaking of royal, she’s done that too. She was part of a televised Royal Command Performance and also sang on Atlantic crossings of that other queen, the QE2. There are multiple appearances, commercials, and clubs throughout the UK, Europe and Scandinavia and three recorded cd’s in addition to a BBC documentary about ghost singers.

The Mississippi Chapter held its Christmas Wine Tasting in Jackson’s Fairview Inn located in the historic Belhaven District. Knights and Gentle Ladies, dressed in their holiday finery, gathered to enjoy each other’s company and taste some very good wine. The evening began with the Roederer Estate Brut as Commander Norman Harris welcomed members and gave a special welcome to our newest Knight, Thad McLaurin.

The wine tasting continued with Bogle Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, Chateau St. Jean Chardonnay, as well as Beringer RSV and Monticello Chardonnay. Members paired these wines with Petite Crab Cakes with Old Bay Remoulade, Chicken Kabobs, and boiled Gulf Shrimp with Creole Sauce. Later Monitcello Pinot Noir and Cabernet were served along with Talbott Pinot Noir Caymus and Trefethen Cabernet Sauvignon. These wines went exceedingly well with the Pork Sliders with Creole Honey Mustard, grilled New Zealand Lamb Chops Lollipops, and Herb Crusted Beef Tenderloin sandwiches with Horseradish Cream. Assorted cheese and fruit and Petit Fours were enjoyed as the evening came to a close with everyone wishing each other a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
