Nature Calls

WE’VE ALL SPENT A GREAT DEAL OF TIME in our houses these past few

months. Maybe too much. For some folks, sheltering in place meant cleaning out closets, organizing drawers, and decluttering basement storage areas. For others, it was a steady drip of online shopping, Kindle reloads, and Netflix sessions. We all found our various ways to cope under the restrictions necessitated by the coronavirus pandemic. With the advent of summer, we can finally step outside and enjoy freedom in nature again. Activities such as biking, hiking, swimming, kayaking, and patio lounging are welcome diversions as we learn how to re-navigate our communities and attempt to adjust back into some semblance of normalcy in our daily lives. Our two featured residential projects, starting on pages 26 and 38, include lakefront views, a personal pond, and a poolside oasis to beckon growing broods of children outdoors. Both sets of homeowners were very deliberate in their planning of dedicated zones for family recreation while maximizing the scenic vistas their properties yield. Writers Emily Udell and Amy Lynch share their impressions of these impressive dwellings built for fun as much as style and function. I’m personally grateful for my garden right now. My overloaded landscape beds not only surround my lawn with pops of color and texture, but they also provide an array of materials for my at-home florist experiments—one such arrangement is shown above. My hydrangeas and yarrow aren’t quite in full bloom yet, but they are represented graphically in “Gardening A to Z,” a guide by Desiree Brandon-Gouveia (p. 20). The lineup in this issue motivates me to keep refining and accenting my exterior spaces. I hope it gives you some inspiration, too.

HINKING ABOUT AGING

in place? If so, you’re not alone. According to AARP, more than three-quarters of U.S. adults over age 50 want to remain in their current homes for as long as possible. A key consideration to staying in your house permanently is accessibility, especially if you or a family member has mobility issues. It is easier to create an accommodating environment if you build from scratch, but there are also many things

you can do to transform and modify an existing structure. Accessible homes aren’t just for older generations and empty nesters. They are becoming more mainstream—not just for convenience and ease, but also for added flexibility in the event that an injury, illness, or handicap restricts a family member’s ability to get around. “It’s becoming more of a focus for all of us, even the younger generations,” says Dawn Wattles, design director for Cabinetry Ideas. “When we get home, we want everything at point of use, easily accessible and uncomplicated.”

Maximized mobility IF YOU’RE BUILDING A HOUSE in which

you intend to stay indefinitely, you can include many design elements that will make life easier for you today as well as in the future. A single-story ranch layout or a floor plan that situates all the main living areas and amenities on one level is the most practical option for accessible living. No stairs to climb is a big plus for everyone as they age. If you have grown children and grandchildren who come for overnight or multi-day visits, consider a multiple-level home with a master suite on the main and extra bedrooms on the upper or lower floors. Doorways, hallways, and aisleways should be oversized to accommodate a wheelchair or walker, should those become necessary down the road. An open floor plan not only makes the dwelling feel more spacious and inviting, it is also practical. It reduces the number of corridors, maximizing efficiency and navigability. “Square footage is expensive, so we want to spend it in the spaces that are most utilized,” says architect Greg Cradick with Wedgewood Building Company. “It’s just a smarter design.”

Smart start PROGRAMMING THE LATEST home technol-

ogy can facilitate ease and convenience throughout residences. Controlling lighting, blinds and draperies, security, and other household features from a single device or app simplifies life.

“Everyone wants a smart home now,” says Jessica Marhoefer, design consultant with Wedgewood. “Those are the biggest things we see as far as home technology.” Cradick has seen an increase in the number of people requesting elevators in the last few years. Even if a car isn’t needed immediately, space can be reserved and future-proofed, which involves building a recessed pit in the lower level and creating stackable closets with removable floors that can easily be transformed into an elevator when the time comes for installation. One layout factor that can make a big difference to homeowners on a daily basis is more efficient access to the home from the garage. Planning a straight path to the door from the family vehicle can reduce obstacles and the potential for falls. Wedgewood typically elevates the garage slab to minimize the number of steps the owner has to take, making treads deeper or creating landings, as well as adding guardrails and handrails. “This works well for all home designs, not just for accessible homes, because it improves traffic flow,” Cradick says. He also suggests decreasing the number of steps to the front porch. In fact, Jackson’s Grant in Carmel includes a section that imposes a step limit. “Doing some pre-planning now will allow you to live in your home for a longer period of time,” Cradick says.

Cooking up convenience BECAUSE THE KITCHEN is typically the

center of activity in a home, making cookware, pantry items, dishes, and utensils easy to access should be a priority. Under-counter drawers rather than baseboard cabinets are recommended to hold everything from pots and pans to glassware. Pull-down shelves in abovecounter cabinets also reduce the amount of stretching and reaching to grab everything needed for cooking and food prep. “The trend of open shelving is also very popular right now,” says designer Gene Abel with Kitchens by Design. “That’s a plus because you don’t have to open a cabinet door, and everything’s visible.” The under-counter drawer idea has caught on in the world of appliances as well. Microwaves situated below the

work surface are much safer than traditional over-the-stove models. You can also select lower refrigerators and freezers with drawers. French-door ovens are convenient, providing better access in tight spaces, plus there’s no heavy drop-down door to maneuver around. “Less of a door swing might also make them easier for some people to use,” Abel says. Wattles mentions an induction cooktop as a safety feature. “There’s no open flame and no lingering heat on the cooktop,” she says. “Plus, it comes up to heat very quickly.” A floating cooktop allows access for those who are wheelchair bound. Wattles also suggests elevating the dishwasher to a “higher, easier-to-reach zone” for a person in a wheelchair. “That lower rack is hard for everyone, let alone a person with restrictions,” she says. The convertible sink base is a design feature that lets you prepare for the possibility of you or a family member being wheelchair-bound. It looks like a typical sink base, but when it’s needed, a portion of it can be easily removed to create under-sink space. In that eventuality, you’ll also need a new sink. According to Jennifer Barneclo, sales consultant with Economy Plumbing, wheelchair-accessible sinks should be no deeper than 6 1/2 inches. 16

IM HOME | 2020

You’ll also want to pay attention to the type of cabinet hardware and faucets you select. Even such a small detail goes a long way toward making the home more user friendly. “Typically, a handle—as opposed to a knob—is a better option,” Wattles says. “The pinch that’s required to use a knob is a lot more difficult than putting your hand into a handle, especially for arthritic hands.” Faucets with levers are also easier to work than knobs. There are batteryoperated, touch-sensitive faucets; handwave faucets; and even hands-free, voicecontrolled fixtures. Any of these options would be great for someone with arthritis or disabilities. “So much of designing for aging in place or people with disabilities is thinking about the small details that can make life easier,” Abel says, “like putting a push-button pneumatic switch in the countertop to turn on the garbage disposal rather than having to reach for a switch on the wall. Little things like that can help.”

Lavatory matters “THIS IS A FUN TIME to help people with

their bath design,” Barneclo says. “Ten or 15 years ago, the accessible bathroom

would look completely different than it does today.” With so many available options and selections for bathroom design, you won’t have to worry about it looking institutional. Your bathroom can be beautiful and modern with added convenience features. One item you may have to forego is a freestanding tub. “They are very popular, but not very accessible,” Barneclo says. “Sometimes the trends aren’t always the best thing for accessibility.” A humble grab bar can have a huge impact on safety. You’ll need to have supports installed in the wall first, then you can hang bars immediately or wait until you need them. Today’s grab bars are both functional and decorative, and they come in finishes ranging from champagne bronze to black so you can match them to your other accessories. Updating an existing space can be challenging, but there are some fairly simple things you can do to increase comfort and ease of use. For instance, replace a standard-sized toilet with a universal or comfort-height model with a seat height of 17–19 inches. Sinks are getting taller, too—around 34 inches, the maximum height for wheelchair accessibility—so people don’t have to bend over. And, hard-to-operate faucets are being replaced with lever handles or

or a permanent drop-down type might be a better choice. Cabinetry is generally kept to a minimum and may be wall-mounted. As in the kitchen, drawer storage is preferred. Abel suggests looking for drawers and vanities with built-in electrical outlets. “That’s not just for someone aging in place,” he says. “That’s for everyone. No one wants cords hanging all over the countertops.”

A spacious, curbless shower with no threshold and a long, attached seat offers attractive accessibility.

Solid footings

battery-operated, touch-controlled faucets and movement-controlled models. “That trend has been around for a while, but it’s gaining in popularity, especially for people with disabilities or who are aging in place,” Barneclo says. If you’re remodeling, you may have the option to widen the entryways to the bathroom, but, chances are, the bathroom will not be spacious enough according to today’s standards. “Bathrooms require more square footage than in the past to make them accessible and easy to navigate,” Cradick says. That extra space allows people using walkers or wheelchairs to safely maneuver, but everyone can benefit from the ease of movement more generously sized 18

IM HOME | 2020

bathrooms offer. Larger bathrooms can accommodate a more capacious shower, which is a real plus if mobility is an issue. A curbless shower, flush with the bathroom floor, with a 36-inch door—or no door at all—is ideal for entering and exiting easily. A frameless, sliding door on a track is another good option. “There’s no swing to get in your way with a sliding-glass door,” Abel says. Another big question is seating. A built-in permanent shower seat is convenient, durable, and aesthetically pleasing. But it takes up space. If you think you might need a wheelchair or walker to access the shower at some point, a fixed seat could turn into an obstacle. In that case, a smaller, freestanding seat

SLIP RESISTANCE is an important factor to consider when selecting flooring. Be aware that some finishes are better than others in that respect. Also, some flooring is naturally quieter than others. But if you fall in love with a surface that isn’t soundproof, rest assured that there are workarounds to minimize noise and improve acoustics. If you must have carpeting, choose a low, tight pile rather than shag or plush style. A low pile is much easier to maneuver and less likely to catch and snag. One of the best options for home flooring is porcelain tile. “It’s super durable, it’s going to wear like iron, and it’s going to clean up like a dream,” says Kelly Cheslyn, vice president of Architectural Brick & Tile. “And there’s an infinite choice of selections.” You can get a porcelain tile that looks like wood planks or natural stone, and you can select among different textures and designs. For a look that’s practical, yet aesthetically pleasing, Cheslyn suggests using a smooth, but textured, large-format tile with fewer grout joints. A high-quality luxury vinyl should also hold up well—even with wheelchair traffic. In fact, luxury vinyl is often used in retirement homes. “These are easy to install, and they promote a very smooth finish throughout the entire floor,” Cheslyn says. Engineered hardwood flooring is another good choice for fluid durability underfoot. Select a wood with a high Janka rating (hardness scale) such as maple, hickory, and many types of exotic hardwoods. “Then, it becomes all about the finish,” Cheslyn says. “You don’t want the hardwood to scratch or dent.” She suggests consulting a flooring professional to ensure you select a durable, long-lasting topcoat.

Gardening A to Z An alphabetical guide to plants, processes, supplies, and resources to beautify and enhance your home and yard. BY DESIREE BRANDON-GOUVEIA

Asclepias Asclepias is the scientific name for milkweed plants, with around 115 varieties across the United States. About 15 species are native to Indiana, including marsh milkweed and butterfly weed. These are required plants for the life cycle of monarch butterflies.

Bulbs Envious of your neighbor’s flowering bulbs? You, too, can add these colorful blooms to your landscape. According to Jesse Beck, grounds programs manager at IUPUI, the key is knowing when to sow. “With tulips and daffodils, you plant them in the fall or winter. Summer bulbs, like elephant ears and gladiolus, you will want to plant in spring,” he advises. If the bulbs feel soft when you’re planting, that’s a bad sign. “They may be rotten,” Beck adds. “Also, read the packaging, as it will give you an idea of how deep to plant the bulb—though it isn’t the end of the world if the bulb isn’t at the right depth.” Pro tip: If you plan to plant many bulbs, there’s a drill bit that will help you dig holes faster.

20

IM HOME | 2020

Containers Part of the fun of spring planting is choosing the containers you might want for your plants. The size of the vessel matters— a larger pot increases the likelihood of a plant’s survival. A sizable planter achieves two goals simultaneously: It helps retain moisture and gives you a greater margin of error with watering and fertilizers.

Deadheading Deadheading is the removal of dying flowers from a plant. It helps the plant focus more energy on subsequent blossoms. To do it properly, pinch just under the dead flower head but above the next healthy set of leaves. Deadheading can feel tiresome, but it has its rewards. Try it to see a second show of blooms this season.

Echinacea Also known as coneflower, echinacea is a popular flowering perennial that prefers a sunny spot in your garden. There are many colorful varieties from which to choose, and they are known to attract butterflies and bees.

Hydrangea Popular garden additions, hydrangea shrubs have showy flowers and attractive foliage. Smooth and big leaf hydrangea are familiar varieties in Central Indiana.

Invasive Invasive plants are non-native and can harm the environment or displace other species. Many are sold commercially, so choose your plants carefully. To find out whether a variety falls into this category, consult the list on the Indiana Invasive Species Council’s website at entm.purdue.edu/iisc.

Japanese garden Fairy gardens If whimsy is your fancy, a fairy garden is a great addition. “You can create one by using small pieces as if a tiny fairy lived there,” says Dan Baker, a gardener with the Indianapolis Zoo and White River Gardens. “Typical in fairy gardens are colorful mushrooms, tiny plants like sedums, and materials that create a natural-looking house, like a log.” Build this diminutive world in a container indoors or carefully selected spot outside.

Japanese gardening techniques can be used to evoke tranquility in an outdoor space. Basics include selecting plants for every season, choosing species that are complementary and harmonious in color, and adding rock or water features.

Ground cover Scattering traditional grass seed is not the only way to build your lawn. Ground-cover plants are low-growing and spread to blanket a large area. They can help with erosion, and some varieties grow in shady areas. Pro tip: Plant ground cover in spring—with regular spacing for maximum coverage—and choose a noninvasive species.

Kohlrabi A member of the cabbage family, kohlrabi is known for its stem bulb that tastes like a mild turnip. It thrives in cool weather, so plant this vegetable for a spring or fall harvest and sow directly into the soil.

“It might be useful to do a very late, heavy watering of outdoor overwintering plants to help create a buffer when the ground begins to freeze.” LOWELL ROLSKY, PROCARE HORTICULTURAL SERVICES

Loam

Pollinators

Loam is a type of soil composed of almost equal parts sand and silt, with a lesser amount of clay. It’s an ideal garden base because it allows water to flow through the roots slowly enough to be absorbed, but quickly enough that they won’t become waterlogged. To determine whether your soil is loamy, grab a handful and squeeze. Loamy earth should form a soft ball that crumbles when you press a finger into it.

When choosing plants, it’s a good idea to consider native pollinators. Various birds and insects rely on the plants they find in their habitats. Why do pollinators matter? They are vital to the reproduction process in many of the plants we consume as food, which impacts one out of every three bites we take. To learn more about creating a pollinatorfriendly garden, visit millionpollinatorgardens.org.

Mulch The word mulch refers to any material that can be spread over soil to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Popular organic types include wood chips and shredded tree bark.

Quercus Quercus is a scientific group that encompasses oak trees. Indiana’s native varieties include Bur, Overcup, and White. Oaks have thick bark that protects against forest fires and are naturally resistant to fungi and insects.

Nasturtium An easy-to-grow annual, nasturtium is best known for its peppery, edible leaves and flowers. Adding nasturtiums as garnish is a great way to elevate your summer salads with colorful, gourmet flair.

Overwintering Gardeners have a few options to preserve and protect plants during the cold season. For many people, overwintering means bringing sensitive varieties indoors. While that is important, another type of overwintering refers to outdoor plants. Lowell Rolsky, owner of ProCare Horticultural Services, offers some insight. “Overwintering is also when people use extra soil or mulch to build up the area around cold-sensitive plant roots to help protect against freezing,” he says. The excess material is later removed at the close of winter. Rolsky provides another important tip: “It might be useful to do a very late, heavy watering of outdoor overwintering plants to help create a buffer when the ground begins to freeze.” 22

Rain barrel Rain barrels are used to capture water from your roof and store it for later use. They attach to downspouts as an easy means to conserve water. Barrels cost $75–$160 from garden centers and specialty shops.

Succulents Succulents are great additions to any indoor space, but it’s a myth that they don’t need as much care as other plants. Choose a container with good drainage and use sandy soil so the plant roots don’t drown. Place them in sunny areas with at least six hours of light a day. Rotate them frequently, and water them when the soil is bone dry.

Tulip poplar tree In 1931, the tulip poplar became Indiana’s state tree. Fun fact: It’s not part of the poplar family; it’s related to the magnolia tree.

Wild ginger Wild ginger is a flowering groundcover plant native to Indiana. “If you need ground cover for shaded areas, wild ginger is perfect,” says Fritz Nerding, Garfield Park & Conservatory manager. “It also supports native insects who need the nectar. Little flies and native bees that don’t build a hive are having a hard time, so any time you can plant something that is native, it’s good for the environment.”

Xylem This word might elicit grade-school science memories. Xylem is one of the most important parts of a plant. With its sidekick phloem, it works to circulate water and nutrients from the roots up to the leaves and back down again.

Yarrow

Upright gardening

Yarrow is said to be native to Europe and Asia, though some might contend it was based in the U.S. Regardless of origin, it is a low-maintenance perennial. “It does not need rich soil. It needs empty soil and sun, so it’s pretty adapted to finding areas that are rockier and drier,” says Nerding. The flower is traditionally white but also comes in a variety of colors. Expect blooms in mid-June.

An upright garden allows you to use vertical space to grow plants instead of spreading them laterally across the ground. “You can grow a lot of plants in a trellis garden—cucumbers, squash, and snap peas,” IUPUI’s Beck says. “Indeterminate tomatoes are good for upright gardens. You can tie a string to the end of the plant, and as it grows you can tighten the string to keep it upright.” There are plenty of options, from gutters to hanging shoe organizers, for even the smallest vertical spaces.

Variegated Variegated refers to a plant with leaves or flowers that are two-toned in certain areas. They are rare in nature but popular in the garden, as they add color, pattern, and texture. Popular variegated plant options include hostas, boxwoods, and ornamental grasses.

Zone Have you ever wondered which plants will survive the ever-changing climate of Indiana? The United States Department of Agriculture has taken away much of the guesswork. The hardiness map defines each region of the country and assigns numbers from 1 to 13 based on temperature patterns. When buying plants and seeds, check for the zone number on the packaging. Most of Indianapolis is zone 6a, but you can search by zip code on the USDA website: planthardiness.ars.usda.gov.

ucked back behind the bustling commercial corridors along Keystone Avenue and 86th Street lies an oasis of lakeside living on the north side of Indianapolis. Lake Clearwater serves as the focal point of a one-of-a-kind, custom-built home with stunning waterfront views in Nantucket Bay,

a hidden enclave that most residents would probably prefer to keep under wraps. “No one knows this lake is here—it’s our little secret,” says Julie Turner, who settled in the community with her husband, Richard. “We’re blessed to live here.” Houses ring the approximately 64-acre lake near 79th Street and Dean Road, making it a sought-after spot for empty nesters and retirees. Most of the homes were built in the 1980s and ’90s. Only boats with electric or no motors—such as small pontoons—are allowed on the water, and most people enjoy the lake in kayaks. “It’s very peaceful,” adds Turner. From foundation to finishing touches, the Turners’ home was fashioned as a gathering place for family with features like a distinctive upstairs bunk room for their grandchildren and a lower-level entertainment area that opens onto a charming backyard patio perched above the shore.

CUSTOM QUARTERS WHEN THE TURNERS first purchased their Nantucket Bay property, they planned to remodel the existing house, but eventually opted to tear it down and construct a new residence from scratch. After some negotiation with the neighborhood association, the Turners were given permission to rebuild on the lakeside site, using essentially the same footprint as the previous structure. The project came to fruition nearly five years after the couple began discussions with

Indianapolis-based Gradison Design Build about the possibility of building their home. “Any time we get a chance to work on a project that has water, it usually means it’s going to be a fun project,” says Joe Gradison, co-owner of Gradison Design Build. The Gradisons collaborated with Gary Nance of Carmel’s Gary Nance Design on the architectural plan. Together, the team navigated some technical challenges to make the Turners’ dream home a reality. “There were a lot of design restrictions by the neighborhood association

we had to deal with, but the final outcome of this amazing city lakefront home illustrates it was worth it,” says Nance. The spacious abode comprises a 3,000-square-foot main level, with 1,400 square feet on the upper level and 1,400 more finished in the lower level. A ground-floor master bedroom connects to a luxurious bath and closet, as well as an exterior patio overlooking the lake. The second-story guest area includes a bedroom, in addition to a bunkhouse that sleeps eight, a playroom, and a bathroom outfitted for visits from the couple’s grandchildren.

The open, neutral kitchen showcases millwork by Nathan Alan Fine Cabinetry and Design, countertops from Stone Artisans, and backsplash finishes from Louisville Tile.

The lower level is all about entertainment, featuring a home theater, a bathroom affectionately called “the bathhouse” for guests playing on the lake, storage for kayaks and floaties, a large potting station for plants, and a kitchen and sitting area that opens onto the back deck. “I personally think it’s absolutely awesome,” says Gradison. “I get excited every time I go in it—the big glass and views to the water create something unique.”

WINDOW TO THE WATER THE SCENERY SURROUNDING the

property played a central role in all decision-making about construction, design, and decor. First and foremost was incorporating a wall of windows from a Bloomington-based dealer of Western Window Systems and Kenny Glass located in Columbus and Seymour. “It was all about the glass working back to a vision,” Gradison says. “The windows make the house. If you just put regular windows in this house, it wouldn’t look the same.” The vast, floor-to-ceiling panels that bedeck the back of the house frame the stunning lake scene. In the main living area, luxurious, neutral-toned sofas and a cognac-colored leather chair flank the vast fireplace made from Eldorado stone that resembles limestone complemented by steel from Indy’s Centerline Studio. A tall, vertical display of firewood alongside the hearth is intersected by the mantel. Within the open-concept space on the first floor, paned glass provides

a visual separation between the TV room and dining area to distinguish the spaces in an unimposing way. “The objective was to have an open plan to maximize the views yet still have segregated living area,” Nance explains. “This resulted in lowering what we call the family media area. This also allows unobstructed views of the lake from the kitchen area.” Wooden beams that cross the ceiling in the main living space create eyecatching appeal. Fred Fuller of Fuller Architectural Hardwoods in Daleville designed, measured, and cut all the wood featured in the house—including the overhead beams. A counter with stools overlooking the living area separates the other side of the den from the kitchen, featuring a uniquely textured countertop and capacious custom cabinets by Indianapolis-based Nathan Alan Fine Cabinetry and Design. Behind the kitchen and tucked off the hallway leading from the entry is a small study and a powder room with a unique wood vanity. At the end of the hall, paddles from the jon boat Julie’s grandfather once kept on the

Ohio River offer a personal touch that conveys the nautical theme. Inside the adjacent office, her husband’s collection of World War II-era guns are mounted on wood platforms to create a one-of-a-kind display.

The media area provides a semi-isolated spot to watch TV, sit in front of the fireplace, or read with ready access to the kitchen.

DIY DESIGN THE INTERIOR OF THE HOME resembles

the work of a practiced designer with its elegant, polished, and harmonious look and aesthetic flow from room to room. In addition to working with the builders, Turner decorated the entire interior herself, sourcing materials, finishes, and furniture using her keen, self-trained eye. “I like to do it,” she says. “It’s a reprieve from the medical services industry.” She wasn’t entirely a solo act, however. Turner’s daughter consulted in the design and planning of the home. “Having worked with many interior designers around the country, I think they created a professional look in

34

coordinating fabrics, color, and correct scale of furniture,” says Nance. In their day-to-day lives, Julie and Richard work alongside their three children at a successful business they founded. Turner loves her time at the office with family, but she also has a knack for interior decorating and relishes the challenge of finding exactly the right items for her space. Turner curated the home’s furniture and decor from a variety of retailers, including familiar and accessible brands like Wayfair, Crate and Barrel, Target, Homegoods, Cost Plus World Market, and Macy’s. She seems to enjoy revealing her sources to curious visitors on a tour. The result of these efforts is an extremely cohesive and high-end ambiance. For inspiration, the couple

wanted to draw from California coastal style, reflecting the atmosphere of a place they like to visit. “It’s very Pacific Coast, very natural,” Turner says. “We didn’t want to detract from the view of the lake.” The decorating scheme incorporates an understated color palette with raw textures to support—rather than compete with—the spectacular vistas afforded by the oversized windows overlooking the water. The decor features largely neutral and nature-based colors throughout the home. Turner purposely steered away from traditional and clichéd lakeside decor. “We didn’t want to be navy-blue nautical,” she says. Beiges, creams, browns, and stone hues complement textured woods and fabrics to create a soothing vibe.

Natural materials create an organic air throughout the house. Mushroom wood mounted to the walls in the master bedroom and adjoining bath sets off the sleek custom nightstands and vanity. For the hallway powder room, the Turners selected a freeform wood slab from Live Edge Design in Canada to serve as a pedestal beneath the vessel sink.

Not only did Turner aim to put the views center stage, but she also wanted to infuse the space with touches reminiscent of the outdoors. “We wanted to make all the elements of the house look like the elements outside,” she says. The bed in the master suite is flanked by walls covered in mushroom wood, a rare type of cured, reclaimed timber that exudes texture and character. To contrast, Julie had an upholstered headboard from Macy’s recovered locally by Louis Munoz to suit her decorating scheme and custom tops for matching nightstands fabricated by Nathan Alan Fine Cabinetry and Design. “I like the juxtaposition,” Turner says of the elegant and rustic elements in the bedroom suite. Mushroom wood also appears behind the linear vanity in the connected master bath, which leads to a walk-in closet and dressing room.

FAMILY FUNCTIONAL IN ADDITION TO THE VIEWS and natural elements, togetherness is an influential force in the home. “I grew up in the country, and my husband grew up in Danville,” Turner says. Richard and Julie moved to Indianapolis when their oldest son decided to attend Park Tudor. Every detail is designed to make the home a haven for the couple’s three children and six grandchildren. Turner’s parents live conveniently across the lake, part of what drew the couple to the area. She says she knew she had found her dream property the minute she stepped onto the lot and into the house. “I walked in at 8 a.m. and saw the view,” she says. “By 5 p.m., other offers were coming in.” Fortunately, the Turners’ bid was accepted, and eventually they began talking with the Gradisons about a total custom build. “One of the things I had written down was ‘family-driven,’” Gradison recalls of the planning stages of the project. “This was all about the grandkids. This was about bringing the family together. As much as this project [was situated in] an

empty-nester neighborhood, it was driven by a family-focused couple.” During the summer and fall seasons, the Turners open the French doors to the porcelain tile patio with a fire pit. Little ones can drift in and out, while parents and grandparents grill, enjoy the views of the lake, and play a ring-toss game that’s affixed to the overhang. They also tune the television to sports games. Family movie nights are hosted in the adjacent home theater, where midcentury modern-inspired chairs are clustered in pairs around metal drum tables facing a flat screen. The screen is mounted on a barnwood tile wall by Louisville Tile in Fishers. Personal

“It lowers your blood pressure when you see the lake. We like having a gathering place.” touches include a homey bench with two bear carvings that was given to Julie by Richard and throw blankets hung from metal boat cleats. Also on the bottom floor is an area the family calls “the bath house” where guests can freshen up before or after lake activities. Tidy shelves hold baskets—each stenciled with a grandchild’s name—to store suntan lotion, swimsuits, and other personal sundries for their visits. A shower features durable outdoor siding as a clever solution for a wet indoor area. A funky black-and-white portrait of a racoon decorates a toilet room, which has a rustic bucket for storing extra toilet paper. Storage for kayaks, floaties, and other gear for water activities, as well as accoutrements for gardening, rounds off the lower level. Patchwork tile and pine paneling line the walls of the entertainment space. Guests can settle in to watch movies or sidle up to the bar area for refreshments. 36

TOP: The serene guest bedroom features calming shades of blue in the textiles and artwork. BOTTOM: The grandkids can nestle in individual bunks, but still peek in on each other through porthole-style windows.

SWEET RETREATS THE STAIRCASE FROM THE ENTRY foyer up to the second-story guest quarters features black rolled steel from Centerline Studio, which was also involved in the construction of the fireplace on the main floor. A cozy upstairs bedroom incorporates a bit more color than the rest of the house and includes a blue paisley comforter and plaid pillows on the bed, along with stepladders from Cost Plus World Market innovatively used as nightstands. A rocking chair from Brown County offers another sentimental touch. The second-floor playroom has its own inflatable bounce house and carpet in an upbeat striped pattern. This fun-filled indoor recreation space is dwarfed only by the crown jewel of the upstairs: a custom eight-bed bunkhouse. The bunks include linens customized by Danville quilter and seamstress Beth Archer to resemble sleeping bags that zip off the mattresses for easy laundering. Each bed area also has a video screen, light, and porthole so the grandchildren can escape to the comfort of their own semi-private retreats within the communal space. The adjacent shared bathroom is adorned with fish decorations “swimming” along the walls, their eyes made from decorative knobs from Hobby Lobby that Turner selected and affixed herself. What makes the couple the most happy about their picturesque lakeside dwelling is when the whole family assembles on a perfectweather day, enjoying the water and each other’s company. “It lowers your blood pressure when you see the lake,” Turner says. “We like having a gathering place.”

A Tipton farmhouse merges functional features and ample entertainment space for a growing family with a little whimsy and a touch of glam.

R RYAN AND ANDREA CAMPBELL, OWNERS

of Total Seed Production, harvest more than corn and soybeans on their 40-acre Tipton County spread. They are cultivating a family. Ryan represents the fourth generation in the farming business, giving him plenty of experience and familiarity with wideopen spaces. High-school sweethearts, Ryan and Andrea bought their acreage from Ryan’s father when they married 10 years ago. An existing house on the property was part of the package, and it wound up serving as the Campbells’ home for several years until they decided to construct their new residence on a plot of land directly across the county road. Both brought up in farming communities, Ryan and Andrea harbor an affinity for fresh air and lots of room to move around. With children on their minds, they wanted a home that could accommodate a growing family. All told, the new house took three years to come to fruition when the Campbells finally moved in just before Christmas in December 2016, following 19 months of construction. “The extended build time was mainly just due to the fact that we kept changing our minds so much,” Andrea Campbell laughs. “The project got too big at one point, so we scaled it back, and then later we made it bigger again.”

From the initiation of the project, the Campbells treated the whole team like family, eschewing formal introductions in lieu of more personal interaction. “To get to know us, Ryan and Andrea invited us over for dinner,” Colin Hoss recalls. “It was a refreshing way to connect that gets lost in today’s fast-paced world. Their availability to be on site and discuss ideas was an integral part of our ability to create the home they wanted, and their hospitality on a daily basis was something really special.” Finding the perfect spot to place the structure was the first challenge, and one that proved trickier than anticipated.

The great room includes rusticchic elements like planked cedar woodwork and birdcage-style pendant lighting.

“Those vistas just seem to go on forever; you can literally see for miles. We knew we wanted to maintain and celebrate that.” —Gary Nance, Gary Nance Design

Planning stages THE CAMPBELLS ENVISIONED a stylish yet functional modern country estate featuring warm wood trims and interesting textures throughout. They ran their ideas by good friends Robert and Shanna Haecker, owners of Zionsville-based TRIPhase Technologies, who urged the couple to contact Carmel architectural designer Gary Nance. In turn, they were referred to Colin and Steve Hoss, builders with Hoss Homes. Hilari Goris also came on board to offer input on the interior design, decor, and finishes after Andrea reached out to her, impressed by the designer’s work she’d seen in a Home-A-Rama showcase property. The two quickly bonded when they discovered similarities in their own individual styles and tastes.

40

IM HOME | 2020

“This was not like designing a house in town or in an established subdivision,” Nance recalls. “At first, we didn’t know exactly where we were going to put the house. That property is so vast and we had so many great options, we were really spoiled for choice.” At one point, the team considered renovating the original house, or even tearing it down completely to rebuild in the same spot next to the barn. Eventually, everyone agreed on a brand-new site to provide a fresh beginning for Ryan, Andrea, and their young sons. With unobstructed panoramic views of farmland in every direction, installing tall windows—and lots of them— throughout the home was a given. “We knew we wanted to keep the lines of sight open in all directions,” Nance says. “Those vistas just seem to go on forever; you can literally see for miles. We knew we wanted to maintain and celebrate that.”

Grand entrance THE HOME’S EAST-FACING ENTRY allows inhabitants to drink in the morning sun and creates a stunning first impression for approaching visitors with a bold, blue Cape Cod–style facade that marries shingles and stone—not something you tend to see every day in rural Indiana farm country. “Our goal was to create a country house with a sophisticated city feel that will still look good 30, 50, and 80 years from now, without defaulting to the overused contemporary farmhouse style you tend to see everywhere these days,” Nance says. The handsome foyer sets the tone for the rooms beyond with a step-up entry; a long, wood bench inside the front doors; a tall ceiling with crisscrossed wood beams (a pattern echoed in the tiled floor below and in the twin entry doors); and a white chest of drawers custom built by Brothers Furniture Design in Lawrence. Barn-style wood doors from Noblesville’s D&D Mouldings and Millwork on the fronts of the coat closets speak to a classed-up touch of terroir. “The entry needed to make a strong statement as soon as you walk in the door,” Goris says. “I love how all the elements in there turned out, and how they all work together.” “Hilari really gave me the confidence I needed to make decisions,” Campbell adds. “The floors, the tile, the furniture, the upholstery—she was always able to nudge me in the right directions.”

X marks the spot in the spacious entryway, which displays a glittering chandelier, wooden bench, family portraits, and a dresser that sits in the recess between the two coat closets. The X-shaped pattern is repeated throughout the house, including in the cabinet doors, wine rack, and stools in the bar area.

Great rooms DOWN THE HALLWAY to the left from the foyer, the home blossoms into a sizeable open-concept gathering room and kitchen, a much-desired departure from the Campbells’ previous residence. Framed by a catwalk staircase on the second floor, the great room holds enough cozy sectional seating for the entire family to kick back and relax in front of a soaring, two-story wall that accommodates a television and a tiled fireplace brought to life by J&B Interior Trim. Cedar wood beams on the ceiling were antiqued to resemble authentically aged timber logs, minus the weight, and a wet bar at the back of the room provides the Campbells with additional incentive to entertain. “We created rooms that they could comfortably live in throughout the house, but Andrea does like some of the nicer, upscale finishes and a little bit of glamour,” Goris says. “Our aim was to blend those two ideas using a lot of textural elements and materials like wood, marble, and metal.”

In spite of the oversized, square corner breakfast nook and a separate formal dining space with an elegant green ceiling treatment, Campbell says the family tends to congregate at the kitchen island under bulbous glass Ferguson light fixtures for homework, meals, and lunchbox prep. To match the rest of the kitchen countertops, the island highlights a white marbled Delicatus granite surface sourced from Marble Uniques in Tipton. 44

IM HOME | 2020

“It’s really hard to find white granite; most tend to have a cream tint,” Campbell says. “I found this before we ever even broke ground on the house and bought five slabs of it.” With large families on both sides of the tree, the Campbells wanted permanent space to seat at least 20 guests without having to schlep out and store extra tables and chairs. “Ryan’s immediate family is 22 people, and mine is 14,” Campbell

explains. “We love to entertain and host Thanksgiving dinners, Christmas, and other get-togethers, so we need a lot of seating.” Two full sinks and two dishwashers make for quick cleanup after parties and family shindigs. The shiny, blacktiled backsplash behind the stove accents the Frigidaire refrigerator and freezer, both gussied up with studded trim to coordinate with the custom hood over the cooktop. Chris Sorensen

created and installed all of the whitewashed custom cabinetry in the kitchen and the built-ins in the great room. “The carpentry work across the home afforded us many opportunities to customize every detail to Ryan and Andrea’s liking,” Hoss says. “For this reason, we believe it’s one of the most distinctive attributes of the house.”

Space for everyone OFF THE KITCHEN , an indoor/outdoor living area encompasses seating, a fireplace, a television, and a wood-burning grill and flows seamlessly out to the resort-style pool area. When a need for more soil to backfill the home presented itself, Hoss took the opportunity to dig a pond with a dock for kayaking and additional family water recreation. Back inside, a dedicated craft room for the Campbells’ three sons stokes young imaginations with a long desktop, shelves, and drawers stocked with creative supplies. However, it’s easy to see how the views through the west-facing windows to a tempting swing set in the backyard might prove distracting. “The layout of this home was a top priority. Andrea and Ryan wanted every member of the family to feel like they have their own spaces to use and enjoy,” Goris says. In the front of the home, an airy mudroom provides a large decompression area leading in from the garage after bike rides, farm work, and ATV adventures. Each member of the family has a designated storage locker. Andrea’s decision to install an extra one for guests was rather prescient. The Campbells are expecting their fourth child, another boy, this summer. “The home is so big, we strove to make each space feel intimate with its own distinctive touches, whether that’s art, wallpaper, or cabinets,” Goris says. “Every corner of this house holds something unique. The biggest challenge for me was finding the right trims, textures, items, and details to go in all of those different spaces.”

Ups and downs PERHAPS THE MOST distinctive feature of the residence is a playground-worthy tunnel slide that connects the second floor to the main-level mudroom and continues down to the basement. This was a touch of whimsy the Campbells requested early in the planning process. “At first, everyone thought we were kidding,” Campbell admits. “I’d seen something like it on MTV Cribs a long time ago, and I thought it was so cool!” The installation turned out to be a lot more work than anticipated. “We found and ordered the materials online, but the company sent the wrong pieces, so that was a hurdle we had to deal with,” Campbell says. “It was worth it, though. The boys use the slide constantly, and it’s big enough for adults, too.” “The challenge of figuring out those exact dimensions and all the turns presented some real brainteasers,” Hoss explains. “In the end, it turned out fantastic.” Upstairs, the master suite in the south half of the residence allows Ryan and Andrea privacy while still keeping them on the same plane with their brood at the opposite end of the house, a deviation from the expected mainlevel-master floor plan. The sunny master bath with its double-sink vanity and indulgent, white-tiled soaking tub looks out over more of those spacious farmland views. The thoughtful design of the second story takes the entire family’s schedule into consideration. “Ryan works in the agriculture industry, and he has to wake up very early,” Nance says. “We laid out the bathroom and the closets in such a way that he could get up and get dressed in the morning without disturbing Andrea.” In addition to a vast walk-through closet, Andrea has her own dressing area and a makeup table that can be concealed by pulling a pocket door shut. Second-floor laundry facilities just off the master simplify the washing process without having to drag baskets of clothes up and down the stairs. No small feat with three—soon to be four—boys under age 10 in the family. Even with so much attractive living space already in place to use and enjoy, Campbell says the house is still a work

in progress. She’s constantly changing out wall coverings and art to keep things fresh. And the Campbells plan to eventually convert open space in an upstairs corner into a guest room and storage area. Still, they couldn’t be happier with the work completed thus far. “This is the perfect house and the perfect property for the Campbells to grow and mature with their family,” Nance notes. “It’s definitely our forever home,” Campbell smiles. 2020 | IM HOME
