CALL’s service to others is made possible by you: our sponsors and donors. Your commitment to our organization is so appreciated. Your support tonight allows our mission to continue. Just this past year CALL has supported:

September 10, 2022

• Catholic Cemeteries and Mortuaries of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, which each day embrace the corporal work of mercy of burying our beloved deceased with dignity and grace while attending to families in grief.

We are celebrating the 10th Annual Angel Awards Gala, our annual fundraiser of the Catholic Association of Latino Leaders here in Los Angeles. These sisters and brothers in Faith share a common vision: the active and ongoing presence of the Latino Community in the life of our Church manifested in service to one another. How proud I am to be associated with this elite group who prefer to call attention not to themselves but to others serving in the Lord’s vineyard.

• The Missionary Sisters of Charity in Lynwood, who faithfully serve God’s people in a quiet and loving way inspired by their foundress, St. Teresa of Calcutta.

• Tuition assistance at San Antonio, Dolores Mission, Ss. Peter and Paul, and Notre Dame Academy.

Helping the faithful plan their Catholic burial and accompanying them through the process of celebrating the life of their beloved family member is what Catholic Cemeteries and Mortuaries do.

.

Rooted in daily prayer as a staff, they cared for families in grief during a time of suffering and uncertainty. But their efforts did not stop with the patrons. The staff recognized how challenging these times were for the rest of the team, and routinely made sure to take care of one another through game nights, daily prayer, coffee breaks, and so much more. Their staff truly embodies how a Christian community should care for one another.

Catholic Cemeteries & Mortuaries in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles are an institution in our communities with a legacy of faith and service. Their staff are angels in our midst

Each year, across eleven cemeteries and six mortuaries, a team of nearly 500 people helps over 16,000 families navigate some of the most challenging days of their lives. The team, led by its Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Douglas Farruggia, provides a service of care, guidance, and good counsel as they serve families when a loved one has passed away.

pandemic, the team members at Catholic Cemeteries & Mortuaries were essential workers: they responded to a 40% increase in Catholic burials. Their pastoral response to ever-changing regulations at the county, state, and federal levels was defined by faith, care, and kindness.

The relationship with the family and Catholic Cemeteries continues with important community events that celebrate the lives of those who have passed: Masses during Memorial Day and All Souls Day, as well as rosaries observed on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are central to the community’s identity. Through these and similar events, our Catholic families create legacies and give life to their Duringcemeteries.theCoronavirus

Missionaries of Charity in Lynwood RELIGIOUS AWARD

Established in the presence of Mother Teresa and joined by then-Archbishop Roger Mahony, the Missionaries of Charity opened their doors in Lynwood on June 12, 1989. Their first mission was to start a home to serve women in crisis pregnancies and young mothers with infants. With no questions asked, the Sisters lovingly share their convent and provide a safe refuge for as many as eight mothers and their children.

For the past three decades their service has expanded to include an active street ministry preparing meals for the homeless and families, regular visits to nursing homes and door-to-door canvassing of the neighborhood. Their mission is to find the person or the family most in need and learn their names, establish a relationship, and become a regular presence in their lives. In the parish, the Sisters offer a catechetical program for the children, run a summer camp, and prepare civilly married couples to celebrate the Sacrament of Marriage. They are assisted by volunteers (some of them former residents who experienced firsthand the Sisters’ care) and have established a corps of Lay Missionaries.

For the last two years, home visits intensified as residents were hit by the pandemic. Each day the Sisters prepare gallons of a special Indian tea, a remedy known for healing and strength, and deliver the tea to the doors of people affected by the virus.

The community of eight Sisters in Lynwood – ages 25 to 80 – manifest God’s love in all they do. Their convent is indeed a center of activity but at the same time it’s a sanctuary of simple care – with no televisions, no computers, no mobile phones, no internet. The heart of their convent is the Chapel where the Sisters, following the example of St. Teresa of Calcutta, are deeply united with the suffering Jesus on the Cross. Their relationship with the Crucified Christ compels them to seek and serve the poorest of the poor.

Our Religious Angel Award is presented to the Missionaries of Charity. The Religious honoree, each year selected by Archbishop Gomez, is recognized for outstanding service to the Local Church. For the past 33 years, the Missionaries of Charity faithfully and quietly serve all who they meet. Located at St. Emydius Parish in Lynwood, the Sisters’ convent is a bustling center of activity offering loving service. Their presence in and around the parish and the community of Lynwood exemplifies the charisma of their Foundress, St. Teresa of Calcutta, to dedicate one’s self in total service to the poor.

Archbishop Gomez’s Episcopal motto is: “Let us go forth with confidence to the throne of Grace,” adopted from the New Testament’s Letter to the Hebrews (4:16). This motto expresses his joyful hope and Christian faith that all men and women may find mercy and salvation through the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

joining us for our 10th Annual Angel Awards Gala. Because of your generosity we have made an impact in our local community, serving those most in need through Catholic education. Now more than ever, our ongoing assistance to these children through young adults is vital.

The Catholic Association of Latino Leaders (CALL) is at the crux of an important moment in our Church and country. Hispanics that identify as Catholic represent the largest, youngest, and fastest, growing group in the United States. However, the fastest leaving the Catholic Church are also Hispanics.
