THE ARAI DIFFERENCE: DEDICATED TO PROTECTION ‘’To ensure that riders can rely on a certain level of protection, mandatory helmet standards have been introduced. These offer the minimum requirements to which helmets have to comply in order to be legally used on public roads. But under real world circumstances however, there is no limit whatsoever to the severity of a single impact or even multiple impacts. Real world circumstances are simply much more demanding than any test lab can simulate. At Arai we ride bikes ourselves.

THE DIFFERENCE OF ARAI

Long before helmets were available in Japan, Hirotake Arai showed his skills on a motorcycle.

THE DIFFERENCE OF ARAI

5

THE DIFFERENCE OF ARAI The design and development of helmets is inspired by the knowledge that they will protect the rider’s head. However, it is difficult to predict the probable impact energy of a crash, the direction of the force onto the helmet, or objects the helmet may collide with. So, the design and development against such unpredictable facts is difficult as there is no perfect solution to cover all possibilities. Helmet protection is often talked about in reference to safety standards. Some companies new to the industry, and even some that have been around

Each of these improvements might not do much by themselves, but we have learned that the combination of these improvements can create a big difference. That’s why we put a tremendous amount of effort into accumulating such improvements through careful observation and feedback from our riders over a long period of time and continue to do so.

An excellent example of Arai’s vision on protection and safety is the development of the PSS, the Pro Shade System. A clever drop-down sun visor, combined with well known, wide vision Max Vision visor with integrated Pinlock inlay lens. It is the all-weather solution against

LD SYSTEM Impact energy can be discharged if the head can keep moving. The basic structure of the human head can be roughly divided into three components; scalp, skull and brain. The role of a motorcycle helmet is to minimize and manage impacts to the brain. Laboratory impact test standards vary

Snell Test line

somewhat, but generally all define shock absorption levels. Those levels are tested by dropping a helmet, with a steel head form inside, from a predetermined height onto a steel anvil. The G meters within the head form measure the G forces sustained in these drop impacts to verify the impact absorption performance. Standards such as Snell set the test criteria quite high to obtain certification approval. Under impact the helmet acts as a buffer, the outer shell displaces the energy and the inner liner absorbs the energy as it crushes, slowing the impact speed. The examination of the impact energy management performance of the standard is very different from an actual accident which occurs in an unpredictable and severe environment.

The kinetic energy of a moving object increases in proportion to the square of the speed. Therefore, a street rider, traveling at the legal limit, can carry up to more than 10 times the amount of kinetic energy as compared to the drop test speed. No helmet, regardless of brand or design, can be expected to manage such energies.

Keep smoother and rounder within the test area. Therefore, Arai believes that Glancing off performance would be important to divert energies by keeping the head moving. For potential impacts with energies above those of the standards, and even above what a helmet might be able to deal with directly, Arai has always tried to make helmets rounder, smoother and stronger throughout its long history. However, even at Arai there are limitations to how round and smooth a helmet can be due to the restrictions of a single pivot shield mechanism. The geometry of current shield systems require a high pivot position. This high pivot point falls within the test area of the standard, across the test boundary lines at the left and right temple area. The shield is attached to the helmet with a mounting / pivot mechanism. To maintain a smooth flush transition from shield shell, the shell area where mechanism attaches must

/ to this have

some depression or recess. The current shield systems, with some portion of the mechanism within the test area, prevent the shell from maintaining a smooth and contiguous curved surface.

VAS is a completely new shield system with a mechanism invented with the sole purpose of minimizing this intrusion into the test area, allowing the shell along the test line at the temples to be made smoother. The new smoother shape is the next generation that aims to further improve on the original mission. Through decades of experience with real world road and track scenarios, Arai has developed a helmet compiled of detail upon detail that work together and improve the protective capacity of the helmet.

REBEL

DARE TO BE DIFFERENT

REBEL FEATURES

There is a strong tendency within the motorcycle community towards simpler, more affordable bikes, without sacrificing anything towards styling or performance.

This has created a whole new segment of often-naked bikes with an unmistakable “street fighter” touch to them. The Arai “Rebel” helmet is the perfect companion

for this new bike segment. Based on the much praised fit and comfort of the Quantum, the Rebel adds an aggressively styled chin piece to this concept.

Ventilation One-piece rear exhaust extracts hot, damp air from the helmets interior and improves aerodynamics. Side exhausts create a low pressure behind the rear vent?? for better hot air extraction, reduced wind noise and prevent buffeting at speed. Brow vents that guide fresh air to the forehead area.

ARAI FEATURES

ARAI FEATURES Five times inspected

Washable interior

Handmade

All-day comfort

Each Arai helmet goes through five separate quality-control depart ments: after the shell is made, after painting and graphic completion, after assembly and two in-process inspections.

The premium quality interior of any Arai helmet can be easily cleaned, in place, with mild soap and lukewarm water

It can take up to five years for our experts to earn the right to create an Arai shell. Each shell can take up to 27 steps and to build one Arai helmet will take about 18 man-hours.

All-day comfort with the Arai interior fit and shape together with the finest liner materials and the extensive ventilation system. And thanks to the perfect balance and weight distribution of the helmet, you hardly notice you are wearing an Arai.

Penetration tested

Double-D ring device

Smooth shape, better protection

Hard outer shell, soft inner shell

All Arai helmets are penetration tested, although not required by European helmet standards. The Arai penetration test is performed with a 3kg test cone that strikes from a height of 3m on the helmet.

The flat and D-shaped rings fit smooth against the chin. No moving parts, no corrosion problems and just pulling the tab is enough to loosen the fastener.

The smooth outer shell of Arai helmets is designed to glide without unnecessary resistance. You don’t want to decelerate your helmet more than necessary. That’s why all Arai vents and ducts are designed to break off during an impact.

Arai uses a very hard outer shell to spread impact forces and a soft inner shell to absorb remaining energy. The multiple-density EPS inner shell is made using a unique technology of combining three to five densities in various areas as a single component.

Organic shape

5-year limited warranty

Different outer shells

Arai In-house test

The organic shape of an Arai outer shell offers a more natural appearance, seals better and conforms more to the head’s natural shape for improved comfort, fit and to help minimize wind turbulence.

All Arai helmets are warranted against defects in materials and workmanship, and are serviceable only for the properly fitted first user for 5 years from date of first use, but no more than 7 years from date of manufacture.

Unlike many other manufacturers Arai provides one size outer shell for each two-helmet sizes for most models. Together with different shaped outer shells for different models it is almost impossible to find the fit you are looking for.

This Arai helmet is designed to meet the stringent Arai In-house standard requirements, in addition to mandatory standards such as ECE 22-05 and voluntary standards such as SNELL M2010.

Important Notice: Arai reserves the right to change models, specifications, colours, designs and sizes without prior notice. No rights may be obtained from this brochure. Please note that printed colours are never completely true to actual colours. Helmet colours shown are as accurate as possible, and are subject to limitations of the printing process. ADDITIONAL SIZES

65

ADDITIONAL SIZES AVAILABLE IN PLAIN COLOURS Arai provides one size outer shell for each two helmet sizes for most models, adding up to five outer shell sizes within limited models, as compared to others who may struggle to reach only three shell sizes. The advantage of using many outer shell sizes is that the inner liner and exterior shell can maintain a closer proportion to the head size inside, rather than padding out an

outer shell that is too large for its actual size, avoiding the need to “over-pad” a large shell for a small head or “thin-out” the inner liner of a smaller shell for a large head. In both cases the result is a helmet that is not in proportion with the rider, offering a curious sight. Arai also offers extreme sizes as small as XXXS (Astro- Light) to as large as XXXL (Quantum-ST PRO) offering

a perfect fitting helmet for almost any head size, in addition to the many adjustable interior parts. And when even these different sizes are not sufficient, Arai is able to have the helmet individually modified to special requests by our craftsmen for a complete custom fit. The models in our additional size range are available in plain colours.

Shell Construction CFC

Shell Construction PB-CLC

Carbon Fibre Composite Exclusive technology developed internally by Arai for the GP-6RC F-1 helmet utilizes carbon fibre found in the latest generation of commercial airlines, and is bonded with Arai´s proprietary resins and is reinforced with a band of incredibly super fibre belt specifically oriented to disperse energy loads laterally across the shell surface. In the forehead area, this band increases shell strength without adding thickness or weight, and allows the use of a thinner EPS liner which greatly enhances the upward field of view – especially appreciated in a full racing tuck!

Peripherally Belted Complex Laminate Construction Arai’s proprietary (super fibre belt) Peripheral Belt, borrowed from our F-1 technology, greatly increases shell strength and flexibility while maintaining low weight and a lower centre of gravity. Positioned across the top of the eye port, this band contributes to the use of a thinner EPS liner which greatly enhances the upward field of view. A specially designed “mechanically expanded fibre mat”, sandwiched between the inner and outer layers of Arai’s proprietary Super Fibre Laminates, is used to reinforce and bond these two Super Fibre layers without adding significant weight to the helmet.

3

Free Flow System (FFS)

Creates airflow under the helmet that reduces wind noise and turbulence while increasing the exhaust of hot air.

Peripherally Belted Structural Net Composite Arai´s proprietary (super fibre belt) Peripheral Belt, borrowed from our F-1 technology, maximizes shell strength and flexibility while maintaining low weight. Positioned across the top of the eye port, this band allows the use of a thinner EPS liner which greatly enhances the upward field of view – especially appreciated in a full racing tuck! The Structural Net Composite adds a physical bond to the resin bond of the many layers of fibres and reinforcing materials within the shell.

Shell Construction SCLC Super Complex Laminate Construction The latest aerospace fibres, with 30% more strength in extension & bending resistance than standard fiberglass comprises the majority of the SCLC shell. While considerably more expensive than most fiberglass (and in fact more than many Carbon Fibre materials), this “Super Fibre” provides incredible flexibility and strength, which maximizes shell integrity. A specially designed “mechanically expanded fibre mat,” sandwiched between the inner and outer layers of Arai´s proprietary Super Fibre Laminates, is used to reinforce and bond these two Super Fibre layers without adding significant weight to the helmet.

Eyeport air channel

Enhanced air exhaust from the eye port area, pulled through dedicated air channel to side ducts, improving efficiency and reducing noise.

Front Ventilation 5

Center Top Vent

The new Top Vent provides 11% more airflow than the previous Vent. The new bigger switch makes opening and closing easier. The new Top Vent has three positions; closed, half open and fully open to adjust the airflow and prevent water intrusion when fully closed.

Shell Construction PB-SNC2

4

8

Brow vents

Fresh air can enter directly to the forehead area without the need for holes in this critical area of the shell and impact absorbing liner. For specific models the ventilation is extended to the temple area.

Shell Construction SFL Special Fibre Laminate Strict quality controlled construction using special fibre layers, crowded with fibres right to the shell surfaces and bonded with special resins formulated by Arai, to disperse impact energy over the widest possible area – the shell’s main job – through strength, structural integrity and impact flexibility.

6

Dual intake

Designed for increased airflow and lower noise level, guiding fresh, cool air into the interior.

9

Three-position chin vent

Three-position chin vent helps in demisting the visor and offering fresh, cool air to the rider.

2

Variable Axis System (VAS) With VAS, the visor mounting position is lowered, yielding an average of an additional 24mm across both temple areas, in pursuit of the ideal smoother shape that increases the ability of glancing off energy. As a result, this has made it possible for more of the shell to be smoother along and above the test line of the Snell standard.

Virtual Axis Track

7

Diffuser system

The new diffusers are 20mm longer and straightened for improved aerodynamics, working together with the Air Wing to improve stability. Compared to the previous diffusers, the efficiency of the intake scoops of the new diffusers has increased by 19%. The new air intake vents not only have more adjustability with three positions; closed, half open and fully open but also help to improve sealing that decreases wind noise and water intrusion.

10

Inner chin (bar) vent shutter

Open and close the chin bar vents from the inside to prevent debris coming into the helmet in dusty riding conditions.

67

FEATURES

Rear Ventilation 11

Neck exhaust vent

To enhance hot-air extraction from the interior. Increases the ventilation effect at the lower part of the helmet.

12

One-piece rear exhaust

Extracts more hot air from the helmets interior and improves aerodynamics.

18

Patented Air Wing® adjustable

MotoGP tested and designed to greatly reduce drag, turbulence and buffeting resulting in more comfort and additional top-speed. It improves stability of the helmet at high speeds or when braking hard and reduces noise. Depending on the model the Air Wing is adjustable in five different angles of attack positions to suit every riding position.

Visor 19 14

13

Removable threepiece rear exhaust

Rear exhaust

Twin exhaust vents on the rear, which circulate more cooling air throughout the helmet’s interior and extract hot air.

VAS Max Vision Visor with De-Mist option

VAS MAX Vision shield is standard to provide better visibility in all seasons and for all types of riding. Comes standard with Clear anti-fog Pinlock insert to be installed as needed.

Creates a tremendous amount of venturi vacuum at the rear. Can be easily removed (for cleaning) or replacement.

15

Side exhausts

Produce low pressure behind the rear vent for better hot air extraction. Integrated in the shell for better aerodynamics, reduce wind noise and prevent buffeting at speed. Inside, a small foam dam helps to absorb and diminish excessive noise, without reducing ventilation performance.

MX-V

22

20

SAI Wider Peripheral Vision Visor

Super AdSis “I” visor offers one of the widest peripheral vision in the business for better performance. Shaping along the upper edge of the shell offer a smooth transition between shield and shell.

PRO Shade System

Arai answer to the problem of sun glare and visor fogging. The PSS offers an efficient combination of an easy to flip up, lockable sun peak, the Max Vision visor and the efficient Pinlock inlay lens. PSS offers protection against sun glare, without effecting the integrity and strength of the helmet shell which could be caused by build-in sun visors. Available for both VAS and SAI visor system.

TOUR-X4

Aerodynamics 16

Chin Spoiler

Helps minimize wind noise and also aids with the extraction of hot air from the face area. Provides additional deflection of road debris away from neck. Depending on the model the Chin Spoiler is retractable.

17

Chin Bar Spoiler

As the “naked” bikes offer a more upright seating position and hardly any wind protection, the chin piece of the Rebel and the pull down chin spoiler are designed to guide the wind around the neck and to improve the aerodynamic, enhancing the wind cheating properties of the helmet.

23

Pinlock insert lens included

Effectively prevents misting and fogging of the visor, even under extreme wet and damp conditions. May be cleaned and changed easily.

21

SAI Max Vision Visor

The anti-fog insert lens is positioned in an original SAI Arai cavity shield, offering the widest peripheral vision in the business. The size of the insert lens can be increased to the maximum without disturbing edges. Improves your view on the road.

Interior 24

Antimicrobial Liner

New exclusive liner with antimicrobial stays fresher between cleanings.

25

28

Facial Contour System (FCS)

To offer an even better snug fit and enhancing the comfort to the lower jaw, the Facial Contour System (FCS) works with a foam spring support in the cheek pad that compresses and rebounds, providing the necessary support without excessive pressure.

29

5mm ’’Peel Away’’ Ear cups/Cheek pads

Giving even more ability to craft the perfect fit and comfort, the cheek pads now feature a 5 mm peel away layer for added room if needed.

Allows easier access to an injured rider. By pulling the orange tabs integrated in the pads, the cheek pads slide out. Making helmet removal easier for trained medical personnel and rescuers. Minimising the risk of additional injury.

34

Chin Curtain

Attached to the bottom of the helmet, the new chin curtain helps to further accentuate the Egg-shape form. The curtain simultaneously blocks air intrusion from turbulent air below and increases negative pressure to enhance the exhaust function of FFS by drawing more air from the mouth area. The improved airflow reduces noise even further.

33

Breath guard

Works in conjunction with the dualpivot® chin vent to better direct fresh air to the inside surface of the shield while at the same time directing hot breath down and away from the inside surface of the shield.

35

Dirt removal

The elongated and rounded peak helps protect the rider from mud or other objects. The flow-through vent ducts and removable rear vent cowls also allow you to remove dirt easily.

Replaceable Interior

Build in communication systems are popular, but the problem is often that the room for a speaker is limited or just not present, causing unpleasant pressure points. The speaker pockets, offering room for mounting speakers without effecting comfort or fit. (Speaker not included).

5mm ’’Peel Away’’ Temple pad

Arai´s peel-away temple crown pads give the option of 5 mm more interior width* if needed.

Approval 36

ECE 22-05

The most common helmet certification internationally, required by over 50 countries worldwide.

31

37

SNELL M2010/2015

The American SNELL Memorial Foundation is an independent organisation, SNELL M2010 is their latest new, more shock-absorbent standard.
