THE ARAI DIFFERENCE: DEDICATED TO PROTECTION ‘’To ensure that riders can rely on a certain level of protection, mandatory helmet standards have been introduced. These offer the minimum requirements to which helmets have to comply in order to be legally used on public roads. But under real world circumstances however, there is no limit whatsoever to the severity of a single impact or even multiple impacts. Real world circumstances are simply much more demanding than any test lab can simulate. At Arai we ride bikes ourselves. Therefore real world protection is what really matters to us. And we are not afraid to work out and test some pretty revolutionary helmet designs. But at the end of the day none proved to offer the level of protection we demand. We learned some remarkable facts during these extensive tests: individual

parts that could be improved for better real world performance. Only a single improved part will not make a significant difference however. But when you gradually improve all components, the final result will be more than just the sum of the improved parts. Then you are able to create a helmet that performs under real world

conditions instead of just in the test lab. Our long history has taught us to understand helmets. And how to make them perform as good as only an Arai can. That is where Arai makes the difference.’’ M. Arai President

What is the primary function of a helmet? Many believe it is to absorb impact energy, which is understandable considering that the long standing focus of helmet standards is impact absorption. However, while certainly important, attention should not be limited only to impact absorption. In official standards the force, angle and impact position of test impact forces are clearly defined and specified. But these impacts take place under controlled laboratory conditions, and are limited by the size restrictions of functional helmet design. What if a helmet is faced with severe impacts in the real world? Even helmets that pass the highest impact absorption standards in the world have limits. To help cope with these limits, another helmet feature has to work together with these impact absorption properties. We are talking about the capacity of a helmet to glance-off obstacles and to slide across uneven surfaces, to minimize the chance of being caught by

REAL PROTECTION AGAINST REAL WORLD IMPACTS WHY 'GLANCING OFF' HELMET PROPERTIES MAKE THE DIFFERENCE obstacles. We refer to this attribute as “glancing off”. Physics teaches us that kinetic energy increases in proportion to the square of speed (simply put, the faster you go the more energy you carry). Therefore impacts in real world accidents can carry energy levels that are well above established standards. This suggests why “glancing off” is so important in the real world. In fact, Arai’s long history of studying numerous incidents has led to a simple observation: “The higher the energy, the higher the need for glancing off objects”. This in turn results in the conclusion that “glancing off” can

allow for better “impact absorption” capacity of a helmet. ”The more energy you can avoid sending into the helmet, the more absorption capacity the helmet has in reserve”. The minimum official “impact absorption” capacity of helmets are set by the established international standards such as ECE or DOT. However, there is practically no standard defined or enforced to insure any level of “glancing off” properties. The capacity of a helmet to ‘’glance off’’ an object is therefore completely dependent on the manufacturer. Arai believes this “glancing off” factor brings about a big difference in

protective characteristics in real world circumstances. Strange as it may sound, this fundamental functioning of a helmet needs to start with an evaluation of the nature of the manufacturer. Just four questions are enough to get a better idea about a manufacturer’s point of view in this respect: 1 ) I s the manufacturer aware of this “glancing off impacts” helmet function? Note: This function is not stated in, or demanded by official standards. 2)H as the manufacturer learned, from its own experience, what is

Answering these questions clarifies why Arai remains exclusive with this crucial ‘’glancing off impacts’’ function, that offers real protection against real world impacts.

What is

Glancing Off? It is the ability of a helmet to Glance Off objects to avoid sending energy directly into the helmet and instead disperse as much energy as possible without stopping in an actual accident. Arai believes that the ability to glance off energy, without stopping, is one of the most important performance characteristics of a helmet in real world scenarios. A helmet should not just comply with acknowledged laboratory test standards, it should exceed in circumstances and situations outside the criteria of those acknowledged standards. Arai believes that the R75 shape concept for our shell construction, which mandates a rounder, smoother shell enhances the ability of the helmet to both disperse and distribute impact energy . Arai has continually improved the “Glancing off” performance by learning from real scenarios through our long history. The new RX-7V ‘’VAS’’ (Variable Axis System) is the latest development in our pursuit of better helmet performance. Compared with the shell of the RX-7 GP, the smoother area around the temple was increased by an average of 24mm because of the shell modification on the VAS model. Having a larger, smoother shell over a wider area increases the ability to divert more energy.

VAS SHIELD SYSTEM Impact energy can be discharged if the head can keep moving. The basic structure of the human head can be roughly divided into three components; scalp, skull and brain. The role of a motorcycle helmet is to minimize and manage impacts to the brain. Laboratory impact test standards vary somewhat, but generally all define shock absorption levels. Those levels are tested by dropping a helmet, with a steel head form inside, from a predetermined height onto a steel anvil. The G meters

of brand or design, can be expected to manage such energies. Keep smoother and rounder within the test area. Therefore, Arai believes that �Glancing off� performance would be important to divert energies by keeping the head moving. For potential impacts with energies above those of the standards, and even above what a helmet might be able to deal with directly, Arai has always tried to make helmets rounder, smoother and stronger throughout its long history. However, even at Arai there are limitations to how round and smooth a helmet can be due to the restrictions of a single pivot shield mechanism. The geometry of current shield systems require a high pivot position. This high pivot point falls within the test area of the standard, across the test boundary lines at the left and right temple area. The shield is attached to the helmet

Standards such as Snell set the test criteria quite high to obtain certification approval. Under impact the helmet acts as a buffer, the outer shell displaces the energy and the inner liner absorbs the energy as it crushes, slowing the impact speed. The examination of the impact energy management performance of the standard is very different from an actual accident which occurs in an unpredictable and severe environment. The kinetic energy of a moving object increases in proportion to the square of the speed. Therefore, a street rider, traveling at the legal limit, can carry up to more than 10 times the amount of kinetic energy as compared to the drop test speed. No helmet, regardless

with a mounting/pivot mechanism. To maintain a smooth/flush transition from shield to shell, the shell area where this mechanism attaches must have some depression or recess. The current shield systems, with some portion of the mechanism within the test area, prevent the shell from maintaining a smooth and contiguous curved surface. VAS is a completely new shield system with a mechanism invented with the sole purpose of minimizing this intrusion into the test area, allowing the shell along the test line at the temples to be made smoother. The new smoother shape is the next generation that aims to further improve on the original mission. Through decades of experience with real world road and track scenarios, Arai has developed a helmet compiled of detail upon detail that work together and improve the protective capacity of the helmet.

An excellent example of Arai’s vision on protection and safety is the development of the PSS, the Pro Shade System. A clever drop-down sun visor, combined with well known, wide vision Max Vision visor with integrated Pinlock inlay lens. It is the all-weather solution against sun glare, fogging and misting. The sun visor flips up and down with a flick of the hand and is fixed in position. A much asked question is however, why Arai did not use a built in sun visor. There are three good reasons not to use a built in sun visor:

1. No reduction in thickness of the EPS inner shell is needed. When the visor is built-in, the space for it is created by making the EPS liner thinner 2. No influence on the integrity of the outer shell caused by the air space needed for a build in visor and the lack of bonding between the outer shell and the inner EPS liner. 3. No operating mechanism needed. The operating system will also need space reducing the EPS liner even

further. Furthermore it often contains metal parts within the EPS liner that could be dangerous in case of impacts. Pro Shade System – down position How does the PSS functions when riding? In the down position the visor functions as an effective sun visor. No more changing shields when the sun goes down, so there is no need to carry additional shields, and fast switching between sun visor and the clear visor function is especially handy when riding into a tunnel or gallery. The PSS system is a complete package consisting of the sun peak, Max Vision visor and Pinlock inlay anti-fog lens. This is the real all-weather solution for riding under all weather conditions offering protection against glare and fogging alike. The PSS system has been tested extensively in the wind tunnel and under real world conditions on European roads and under European weather conditions. During these tests it showed that the PSS didn’t increase wind noise and caused no buffeting of the helmet, even at high speeds. Pro Shade System – locked peak But the clever PSS system offers ad-

ditional advantages, no internal visor can deliver. With the visor in the up position it functions as a peak. The locking mechanism will keep the peak in position. Glare from high sun is filtered out. (Image 1)

Image 2 Compare it with sun visor in a car, only the PSS functions much faster. Just a dip of the head is all that is needed. No need to take a hand off the handlebars to operate a lever or button. The riders view is not blocked by a full sun visor, the clear part offers a clear view on the road ahead. PSS takes away the glare, not the view on the road and other traffic. An additional advantage the Arai PSS offers, that no ordinary internal drop down design can, is that in the up position it even works at night by effectively blocking the glare from overhead street lights.

ADDITIONAL SIZES AVAILABLE IN PLAIN COLOURS Arai provides one size outer shell for each two helmet sizes for most models, adding up to five outer shell sizes within limited models, as compared to others who may struggle to reach only three shell sizes. The advantage of using many outer shell sizes is that the inner liner and exterior shell can maintain a closer proportion to the head size inside, rather than padding out an outer shell that is too large for its actual size, avoiding the need to “over-pad” a large shell for a small head or “thinout” the inner liner of a smaller shell for a large head. In both cases the result is a helmet that is not in proportion with the

rider, offering a curious sight. Arai also offers extreme sizes as small as XXXS (Astro- Light) to as large as XXXL (QuantumST PRO) offering a perfect fitting helmet for almost any head size, in addition to the many adjustable interior parts. And when even these different sizes are not sufficient, Arai is able to have the helmet individually modified to special requests by our craftsmen for a complete custom fit. The models in our additional size range are available in plain colours.

Exclusive technology developed internally by Arai for the GP-6RC F-1 helmet utilizes carbon fibre found in the latest generation of commercial airlines, and is bonded with Arai´s proprietary resins and is reinforced with a band of incredibly super fibre belt specifically oriented to disperse energy loads laterally across the shell surface. In the forehead area, this band increases shell strength without adding thickness or weight, and allows the use of a thinner EPS liner which greatly enhances the upward field of view – especially appreciated in a full racing tuck! Peripherally Belted Structural Net Composite

Arai´s proprietary (super fibre belt) Peripheral Belt, borrowed from our F-1 technology, maximizes shell strength and flexibility while maintaining low weight. Positioned across the top of the eye port, this band allows the use of a thinner EPS liner which greatly enhances the upward field of view – especially appreciated in a full racing tuck! The Structural Net Composite adds a physical bond to the resin bond of the many layers of fibres and reinforcing materials within the shell.

Super Complex Laminate Construction

The latest aerospace fibres, with 30% more strength in extension & bending resistance than standard fiberglass comprises the majority of the SCLC shell. While considerably more expensive than most fiberglass (and in fact more than many Carbon Fibre materials), this “Super Fibre” provides incredible flexibility and strength, which maximizes shell integrity. A specially designed “mechanically expanded fibre mat,” sandwiched between the inner and outer layers of Arai´s proprietary Super Fibre Laminates, is used to reinforce and bond these two Super Fibre layers without adding significant weight to the helmet.
