From Arabian racing’s biggest event, the Qatar World Cup on Prix de

l’Arc de Triomphe day, to the President of the UAE Cup at Santa Anita on the

Breeders' Cup weekend, Arabian horses enjoyed the kind of visibility in 2013 only dreamt of just a few short years ago. Of course, we have sponsors to thank for that — big prizes bring visibility for the sport and for our breed. Generous Arabian racing aficionados in Qatar, the UAE, Oman, the U.S., and wherever Arabian racing is enjoyed, have made it possible for Arabian horses to step onto some of the world’s most famous racetracks alongside their Thoroughbred descendants, in front of huge crowds and television audiences. But the real work of helping Arabian racing flourish takes place on a more intimate level, one horseman to another. As one of our interview subjects in this issue said, “When I want to encourage someone to invest in Arabians, I say, come with me, touch the

Mushrae and Tabarak Share the #1 Spot by Steve Andersen

F

rom the Middle East to western Europe, Mushrae (Munjiz x Djezika by Dormane) and Tabarak (Nizam x Altesse d’Aroco by Manganate) were the dominant

Arabian racehorses of 2013.

Mushrae (Munjiz x Djezika by Dormane), winning the Group 1 Qatar Arabian Trophy for threeyear-old colts at Saint-Cloud on October 5, 2012.

They were so brilliant in so many key races that they ended up sharing the title of best Arabian racehorse outside of the U.S. determined by the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing’s Pattern Race and Handicapper Committee. The announcement was made in late January by committee chairman Graham Wolcroft. After analyzing the race records and performances of the world’s leading runners, the committee decided that Mushrae and Tabarak were worthy of a top rating of 126. The rating indicates the number of pounds horses would be assigned to carry in a hypothetical race, based on their past performances. Therefore a horse rated 126 would carry two pounds more than a horse rated at 124. This rating is similar to yearend lists published annually for Thoroughbreds in the U.S. and Europe. Through the year, Mushrae and Tabarak met twice, each finishing in front of the other once. At other times of the year, they won major stakes in Qatar, England, and France. Tabarak had the busiest year, winning four of six starts in Qatar, England, and France for HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani’s Umm Qarn Farm and trainer Alban de Mieulle. Tabarak, a five-year-old in 2013, essentially had two seasons — three races in the winter in Qatar, and three races in the late summer and autumn in England and France. 50 ▪ ARABIAN RACING YEARBOOK ▪ WORLD

Tabarak started the year with a win in a race named for his owner, the Group 3 Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani Cup at Doha on January 16. The race was over 1,850 meters on turf and Tabarak beat a field that included Rathowan, who was second in the 2012 Qatar Arabian World Cup the preceding October at Longchamp Racecourse in Paris. Rathowan was second to Tabarak in the Sheikh Abdullah Cup. Tabarak and Rathowan met two more times in early 2013, with Tabarak prevailing in each race. The second meeting was the Group 2 Heir Apparent Trophy at Doha on February 7. Run over 2,000 meters on turf, Tabarak won by three-quarters of a length over Aziz ASF, who like Rathowan is owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani. The Heir Apparent was a prep race for the leading race on the Qatar calendar — the Group 1 Emir’s Sword on February 28, worth approximately $570,000. Run over 2,400 meters on turf, the race was the championship for the winter circuit in Qatar. Tabarak’s performance lived up to expectations in the Emir’s Sword. Ridden by top French jockey Olivier Peslier, Tabarak rallied from the back of the field of 12 to win by a length over Rathowan. The Emir’s Sword was Tabarak’s first win over 2,400 meters. “This race was very important for us and Tabarak did not disappoint us here,” de Mieulle said at the time. “We knew he was a good horse, but since he was running this distance for the first time, we were a little anxious. He showed a good kick in the finish and won well.”

De Mieulle said after that race that Tabarak would be rested through the spring of 2013. The team held to that plan. Tabarak reappeared in the Group 1 Doha Cup at Deauville, France, on August 10, a race known in the past as the Prix Manganate. By the time that Tabarak was back in action, Mushrae had formed a winning streak of his own. Owned by HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nayhan and trained by Jean-Pierre Totain, Mushrae entered the 2013 season with a lofty reputation. His 2012 season was highlighted by a win in the Qatar Arabian Trophy for three-year-olds at Saint-Cloud Racecourse in Paris in the days before the Qatar Arabian World Cup that year. Mushrae started his 2013 season with a win in the Group 2 Prix CarthageHannibal at Toulouse, France, on April 19. The Group 2 race for older horses is run over 2,000 meters on turf and Mushrae proved to be a standout, winning by 21/2 lengths over Vulcain du Clos in a field of nine. Mushrae went back into his age group for the Derby des Pur-Sang Arabes, sponsored by Al Shahania Stud, at Chantilly, on June 16. The race was limited to four-year-olds and was run over 2,000 meters on turf. Once again, Mushrae was the dominant runner, winning by 21/2 lengths over Al Mahdod. Mushrae and Tabarak were part of a field of six in the Doha Cup, which is run over 2,000 meters on turf and is a key prep for the Qatar Arabian World Cup in October. While Mushrae and Tabarak each brought a winning streak to the Doha Cup, they were beaten. Umm Qarn’s Muntasar, third behind Mushrae in the Derby des Pur-Sang Arabes, was the winner, prevailing by 13/4 lengths over Tabarak. Mushrae was third, 31/4 lengths behind Muntasar, who had won the Group 1 Qatar International Trophy over a mile in Doha in February. Tabarak rebounded from that loss to earn a piece of Arabian racing history. He made his next start in the Qatar Equestrian and Racing Club Harwood International Stakes at Doncaster, England, on September 14. The race was run on the same program as the St. Leger, a marathon Thoroughbred race for three-year-olds over 1,600 meters on turf that was first run in 1776. 51 ▪ ARABIAN RACING YEARBOOK ▪ WORLD

The St. Leger is the third leg of the English Triple Crown. The presence of the Harwood International Stakes was the first time that an Arabian race had been run on a Triple Crown program. The field for the Arabian race reflected the quality of racing for the day. The $247,000 race was run over a mile and drew 18 runners. Tabarak, ridden by Peslier, was the 5-4 favorite, and ran to his odds. He raced in the middle of the field for the first half-mile, took the lead with a furlong remaining and won by 11/4 lengths over Djet Taouy. That led to the Qatar Arabian World Cup. In recent years, the Qatar Arabian World Cup has become the big race goal for top-class Arabians in Europe. With a purse of $945,000, the prize money entices the best. In 2013, the race drew 14 runners, including the eight-year-old Areez, the 2011 winner; and the five-year-old Mkeefa, the 2012 winner. But it was Mushrae, one of four four-year-olds in the field who prevailed. Ridden by another top French jockey, Christophe Soumillon, Mushrae stalked rival Muntasar through the stretch, took the lead late and won the race over 2,000 meters on turf by a neck. “We really had a great race,” Soumillon said. Mushrae really did have a great year in 2013. So did Tabarak, who was only fifth in the Qatar Arabian World Cup. But Tabarak’s dominance of the Qatar winter season, and historic win at Doncaster in September left him equal to Mushrae in the 2013 racing season. or more than 20 years, JeanPierre de Gaste has been at the forefront of French Arabian

racing. He is the former president of AFAC, the Arabian racing organizing body in France (Association Française du Cheval Arabe de Course) and founded the IFAHR’s Pattern Race and Handicapping Committee, which has helped to

How did you become involved in Arabian racing? Where were you, and what was the race, or horse, that made you decide that Arabian racing would be part of your life?

I came from the Thoroughbred world and didn’t have any experience in Arabian racing. But, in the early 90s, I met H.H.Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan from Abu Dhabi, who wanted to start a racing stable and breeding operation in France. I knew very little about Arabian racing then, but the best trainer in Arabian horses in those years, Jean-Pierre Totain, was a great help. We succeeded in becoming, within one year, from 1994 and on, leading owner on behalf of Al Asayl Stables in France and Europe, with champion horses such as Darike, Magic de Piboul, the first horse trained outside U.A.E. to win the Dubai Kahayla Classic, Dorwan du Cayrou, Elios de Carrere, and Vanissa du Loup — the only horse that ever defeated the champion Unchainedd Melody. Those five horses have won an equivalent of eleven Gr.1 PA races.

unify Arabian racing in Europe and the Middle East. That committee developed a year-end international ranking of Arabians that provides a better understanding of global racing for all observers. He spoke with Arabian Horse World in early February about his background in Arabian racing and thoughts on the future of the sport.

With your involvement in AFAC, sponsorship in Arabian racing has grown substantially in recent years; what has been the key to that success?

The first sponsorship I secured was back in 1994 when the UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation sponsored the French Derby in Chantilly, with two Arabian races on the card. At that time, to run two Arabian races on the French Derby day was considered nearly scandalous by the Thoroughbred community. Some major trainers complained that the track was damaged needlessly by such horses comparable to ponies. The sponsorship of the French Derby day ended in 2000 with the decision to move the two Arabian races to Deauville. Now the U.A.E. is sponsoring a Gr.1 PA race in Saint Cloud during the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud day. At that time I was not yet president of AFAC; I became president of AFAC in 2005 and it was in 2008 that I initiated the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe’s sponsorship between France Galop and Qatar. I created IFAHR’s Pattern Race and Handicapper Committee in 2005, with the goal of structuring Group races within Europe and Middle East. After years of hard work, we published the first-ever international rankings for purebred Arabian racehorses. That was a vital achievement in order to gain worldwide recognition for Arabian racing. Overall, Arabian racing has grown in France in the last 20 years. Have attitudes changed about Arabian racehorses in France over the years?

At the very beginning, the Thoroughbred community in France was strongly against Arabian racing. Although Anglo-Arab races are commonly accepted on all the racecourses in the provinces in France, it took years of lobbying to achieve the full acceptance of Arabian races on the major racecourses in Paris. But I always believed that Arabian racing would be the best introduction to bring major investors from the Middle East to Thoroughbred racing, knowing how deeply horses are integrated into their culture. Since several major investors from Qatar got involved in Thoroughbred racing, Arabian races are obviously welcomed, not only on every racecourse in Paris, but in the world. The most important aspect is that it is considered a professional activity. 54 ▪ ARABIAN RACING YEARBOOK ▪ WORLD

with the first edition of the Qatar World Cup on the day of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. The sponsoring of the Arc’s day has been another major step that has erased all the prejudices against Arabian racing from the Thoroughbred world. What is your favorite racecourse? Any outside of France on your short list?

Is it possible for Arabian racing to grow to the same extent in other countries, such as the United States?

Yes, but with the help of sponsors, as well as greater professionalism in the Arabian racing discipline. We have been working on the integration of U.S. Arabian Graded Stakes within IFAHR’s Pattern Race Committee. This could give a complete new dimension to Arabian racing in the U.S. There should also be a constructive racing program coordinated between the major racecourses running Arabian races with attractive prize money which would enable horses to race in several states. The Sheikh Mansoor Festival as well as the Emirates Equestian Federation are very much involved, each focused on a particular target. Such sponsors help owners, trainers, and breeders not to give up on Arabian racing, which has endured a very difficult situation for several years. Thanks to the work of U.S. Arabian racing representatives such as Kathy Smoke, Susan Meyers, Deborah Mihalof Kirshner, Denise Gault, and many others, Arabian racing in the U.S. still does exist. Arabian racing has become more of a global sport, largely through Middle Eastern benefactors. Was this something that you envisioned?

As I mentioned earlier, it has been a long obstacle course, where lobbying followed struggles. Indeed, it is mainly thanks to the support of the Equestrian and Racing Federation of the U.A.E. that Arabian racing has spread among the major European countries of racing. As a consultant for the Federation, I have been closely involved in the negotiations with every European country since the early 90s, to introduce professional Arabian racing. France, which had a long history of Arabian racing, has been the most receptive, and England has been the most reluctant. I remember numerous meetings in London with the Arabian and Thoroughbred racing authorities, to try to convince the Chairman of the Stewards of the Arab Horse Society, to accept professional jockeys and starting gates. Still to this day, Arabian racing is considered as an amateur sport in England, and Arabian races are not completely included on the race card of the day during Thoroughbred meeting. However, the whole picture of Arabian racing has changed dramatically from 2008, 55 ▪ ARABIAN RACING YEARBOOK ▪ WORLD

Of course Longchamp; I am a true Frenchman! And, outside France, my favorite is Santa Anita. I enjoy so much its atmosphere of racing. What do you most admire about Arabian horses and/or Arabian racing?

About Arabian horses, their cheerfulness and their endurance. I am a great fan of hunting, and I always ride an Arabian horse on the hunts. About Arabian racing, there is still a lot to create, and this is what fascinates me. Do you have a favorite Arabian racehorse or breeding horse?

Yes, the mare Kiss de Ghazal that I own in partnership with a friend from Saudi Arabia, who won for us seven Group PA races, including three Group 1 PA, and has been rated the best three-year-old filly, and the best four-year-old filly of her year. She is now a broodmare at my farm in Normandy, in foal to General (Amer x Al Hanoof by Manganate). What was the most memorable Arabian race you ever saw?

The Dubai Kahayla Classic won by Magic de Piboul in 2001 — the only time in my life when I have been screaming during the finish of a race. And, the U.K. Arabian Derby in Ascot, won by Kiss de Ghazal in 2011. She was cantering in front of the best colts of her generation.

Deborah Kirshner-Cre Run by Steve Andersen and Denise Hearst You have been involved with Arabian racing for 30 years. What are you most proud of as Arabian breeders? As owners of Arabian racehorses?

As breeders, we are very proud to see that those of us breeding for racing have bred some very nice individuals. They have not only been successful on the track but also have gone on to excel in other disciplines, like endurance, reining, and sport horse. As owners, we are very proud to see Arabian horses recognized at global racing venues, viewed by thousands of horse fans for the first time. Where were you, and what was the race, or horse, that made you decide that Arabian racing would be part of your life?

The great Flaming Tron Ku was the first horse that got us into racing. Our partnership in his ownership with the Courtelis family was enjoyed for many years, as we watched this magnificent animal set or equal eight track records. We enjoyed racing with show people like Bob and Sharon Magness, Neil and Barbara Chur, Arnold and Audrey Fisher, and Buzz and Jackie Brauninger. We each took turns winning and often knew why our horse didn’t win on a particular day. You also knew why your friends’ horse was the best horse that day and so you were happy for them. We would celebrate their victories, unlike in the show world where much criticism takes place after the winner is pinned. If you could see any Arabian horse from the past or present, who would it be, and why?

Oh, one is hard to choose, but if only one, I would like to see the Darley Arabian. Why? To see what true Arabian type was back then, and to experience his personality.

It goes without saying that Royal Atheena is the best mare we have ever bred, She still holds the title in leading monies earned in the female category in the U.S. Atheena has a daughter, Royal Richess, whom we own in partnership and who is presently at Sam Houston Race Park for the running of the Texas Yellow Rose. She looks just like her mother and we can only hope she runs like her as well. In Awe, another Monarch daughter is the dam of Thess Is Awesome by Dahess. He is the 2013 leading three-year-old in the country and up for a Darley Award in his age group. Having been in this for some time we are fortunate to have amassed a wonderful broodmare band that we are outcrossing to international bloodlines like Dahess (Awaad x Al Jazi), who is available in the U.S. We are all so fortunate to have the ability to breed to these wonderful stallions that weren’t available to us in prior years. As for sires to be admired, *Wiking (Etap x Wilma) has proven to be a very successful sire and broodmare sire in the U.S., as has Sam Tiki (*Sambor x Kyla Tiki), proving how strong the Polish bloodlines are. It’s great when others realize that your horse is an Arabian, and even better to see the surprise and admiration on their faces when we tell them they are Arabian racehorses. What were your favorite moments in Arabian racing in 2013? THE moment in all your years of racing?

Our favorite moment in Arabian racing in 2013 — and probably ever — was seeing Arabian horses run at Santa Anita Race Park on the Breeders’ Cup day card. This was something Alan thought he would never see and something I had always dreamed of. It put Arabian horse racing on the map.

Last year he placed second in the Grade 1 President of the UAE Cup race at Churchill Downs on Stephen Foster Day. We would love to race him on the turf, maybe 2014. What is your favorite racetrack in the country? The world?

Our favorite racetrack in the U.S. would probably be Del Mar; and in the world, Meydan in Dubai, where the Dubai Kahayla Classic is run on the richest day of Thoroughbred horse racing in the world. Longchamp in Paris is also a beautiful track, but that is closed this year for renovations, with racing going to Chantilly. That is also a beautiful course so there won’t be any disappointment this year when the Qatar Arabian World Cup is run there for the first time. What has changed in the last five years is the sponsorship of races in the U.S. by foreign sponsors. This year’s Darley Awards are sponsored by HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan and will be held in conjunction with the HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Darley Awards at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on April 4. Everyone is welcome; formal attire is required. For more information, go to the Arabian Racing Cup website at www.arabianracingcup.com.

the French Bloodstock Agency, a company that buys and sells horses on a worldwide scale. Arabian racehorses are very much a part of that operation. Deroubaix has been active in Arabian racing in Europe and the Middle East as a bloodstock adviser and a consultant to the national Jockey Clubs in Jean-Pierre Deroubaix of the French Bloodstock Agency.

several countries. He recently spoke with Arabian Horse World about his start in Arabian racing, and the buying and selling of racing and breeding prospects and the future of Arabian racing.

How long have you been an Arabian bloodstock agent, and how did you become involved with Arabians?

I’ve traveled to the Gulf countries annually since 1990 and I live in France, where we have a lot of races for Arabian horses. It was logical to try to enter into the market of buying/selling Arabian racehorses for potential customers from the Gulf countries, where most of the races, in those times, were exclusively for Arab horses. The local racing authorities introduced me to local owners and trainers and I also offered my services as consultant/adviser in anything related to horse activities. I developed good contacts by selling equipment, and gradually I was introduced to local sheikhs who asked me to find architects to build racetracks, stables, training centers, and vet clinics, and to find trainers, jockeys, veterinary surgeons, and farriers. In fact, I sold “services” and equipment before selling horses. I was lucky to meet Mr. Ali Khamis al Jafleh, the first manager of the Dubai Racing Club, who introduced me to the Maktoum family in Dubai, as well as members of Qatar’s ruling family, the Al Thanis. The same in Bahrain, where I met with a local French trainer, training for the son of the Emir, and in Oman, where I met with the commander of the Royal Cavalry of Oman, Brigadier Abdi Al Shahwarzi. I sold horses to them and invited them to visit me in France. It took time and a lot of trips, every year, to earn the confidence of the different local royal families but I was lucky enough to succeed and I can say, proudly, that I know nearly all of them. From October to May, I am in the Middle East nearly every month, attending to the best races of Oman, Qatar, Dubai. Then, due to the weather conditions, they stop local races and their best horses travel to Europe. As I work also for clients in Russia and former Soviet republics, it is convenient because the weather is too bad in winter in those countries, so I can combine both activities. I also travel very often to Turkey, where I have advised the

local Jockey Club for more than 20 years. As you can see, I am lucky to be able to meet with many different “bloodlines” of Arab horses and to understand better the quality of each. Who knows, for instance, that there are daily races for Arabian horses in Turkey? Tell us about your bloodstock operation. What percentage of your work is devoted to Arabian racing stock?

I must say than in the last five years, Arabians have comprised nearly 50 percent of my business. I am lucky to work for the best owners from Qatar and proud to be the agent of the Royal Cavalry of Oman. I sell them horses and equipment, find specialists for them (vet, trainers, farriers) and give advice to the local Racing Authorities or to private owners on all aspects of the horse industry (construction, breeding, training, rules of racing, organization of events, etc.).

enough for the customers from the Gulf countries. When I want to encourage someone to invest in Arabian horses, I don’t use theory! I tell them to come with me, to touch the horses, to talk to them, to look at them. Arabian horses are more beautiful and more clever than any other breed of horse. They are just the best. How does a bloodstock agent gain the trust of a new investor?

How do you encourage people to invest in Arabian racehorses?

First of all, the agent is not the “payer,” but only at the service of the customer. The only one who will pay will be the “buyer”! The first step is to know each other: human relations, and mutual understanding. It means a lot of travel, a lot of meetings, a lot of patience (often due to different cultures, education, religion, food, habits, ways of life) — all those things are a priority, in my opinion. If you “push” too much, your new potential client will not be confident. The second crucial point is to understand the demand, what the customer wants to buy. Do they want horses to make money with (buying, breeding, racing, selling), or horses just for fun, or for their beauty? Does the new investor want to win the Qatar World Cup or only to have fun with his friends and family? Don’t be afraid to speak about budget, commissions, who pays what and when. Prepare clear mutual agreements, contracts, explain the purchase procedure (vet check, X-rays, etc.), and so forth. Offer a business plan to your new customer and he will be more confident.

I don’t need to convince Gulf country residents to invest in Arabian racehorses, they love them; but I try to convince them to purchase better quality and to find new blood from other countries (Russia, Turkey, the U.S). As for the French owners, I try to convince the local breeders to breed with better mares and better stallions, to produce horses good

How do you handle a situation when you do business with both a buyer and a seller?

Arabian racing seems to be gaining a greater acceptance in France. How do you think racing will do in the future?

I don’t think Arabian races in France are gaining greater acceptance, they are gaining “visibility” because of the sponsors. We are lucky to have good Arabian racehorses, purchased by residents of Qatar, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Iraq, etc., and they keep them in training in France, or from May to October they bring their best horses to participate in the best European Arabian races. They want strong competition and good media coverage, so they sponsor those races. In France, we have always mixed Arabian races with English Thoroughbred races. If you go to Toulouse, for instance, you can see on one racetrack on the same day, flat races for Arabian horses, English Thoroughbred races, hurdle or steeplechase races for Thoroughbreds, Anglos (a mixture of Arabian and Thoroughbred), or non-Thoroughbred horses, together with races for trotters. These are our roots, “provincial” races. Arabian horses are part of our racing and betting systems. The French jockey Club, France Galop, was clever enough to include Arabian races on the big event days like the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe weekend, or the Prix de Diane day (sometimes referred to as the French Oaks). In the U.K. (GB), I was always shocked to see that the Arabian races in July in Newmarket, for instance, sponsored by the Maktoum family or the Abu Dhabi ruling family, ran before the Thoroughbred races, or after! Without betting and without even being published in the racecard of the day as a race! They were not publicized in the English newspapers like the Racing Post or others, and were nonexistent in the betting shops.

59 ▪ ARABIAN RACING YEARBOOK ▪ WORLD

Transparency is vital, meaning that both parties must know who pays me and how much. Sometimes the seller will pay for my commission (if he asked me to find a customer for his horse for sale), sometimes the purchaser will pay for my commission (because he asked me to find a good horse for him), sometimes I ask both parties to pay 50/50 of my commission because they found a mutual agreement under my guidance. What accomplishments in Arabian racing are you most proud of?

I love people. I love to travel around the world. I am very proud to have purchased Arabian horses, winners of Group 1 races, for very important individuals like HM Sultan Qaboos of Oman, HH Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani from Qatar, but I am also very proud to have been an important actor in the global visibility of Arabian races, helping racing authorities from France, Qatar, Oman, Turkey, and Dubai to create or to improve very important races for Arabians. Perhaps the agreement between France Galop and the Qatar Racing Club will remain my best memory. What do you admire most about Arabians?

They are beautiful, clever, friendly. What trends do you see emerging in Arabian racing bloodlines?

In France we had Manganate (Dormane, etc.). Now we see, everywhere in the statistics, Amer from Qatar (and his sons). In the past, each country had Arabian horses whose pedigrees reflected their local bloodlines. Now it is easier to ship stallions or to import/export frozen semen. In Europe, it is easy to import semen from the U.S. or the Gulf countries and, in the last couple of years, we also have had access to bloodlines from Russia, Iraq, Poland, and Saudi Arabia. In my opinion, the future will come from the Turkish bloodlines. As I mentioned, the number of races is very important in Turkey (there are daily races), and thus the number of race-bred Arabian mares and stallions is great. The Jockey Club of Turkey and the local private owners are allowed to stand Arabian stallions to compete with the TIGEM (Turkish General Directorate of Agricultural Enterprises) stallions. The only problem is that the Turkish races are closed to foreign competition (except a few international races) and it is nearly impossible to export frozen semen to Turkey, or to import semen, or stallions, from Turkey. But one day or another, it will happen and Turkish bloodlines will become very influential. Do you have a favorite racetrack?

For Arabian races, I prefer small racetracks like Doha, and Abu Dhabi, but I must say that Longchamp, on the day of the Arc, is my favorite racetrack to watch the Qatar Arabian World Cup, then Dubai Meydan on the day of the Dubai World Cup to watch the Dubai Kahayla Classic.

60 ▪ ARABIAN RACING YEARBOOK ▪ WORLD

Five years from now, what will you be doing in Arabian racing?

I want to be a part of the globalization. I want to see Arabian races in every country of Europe. More races in the U.S., in South America, in Australia, and even in Asia. I want to see a real cooperation between the Gulf countries, I mean a championship with easy travel conditions (same veterinary legislation, customs regulations, etc.) among those countries, I want to see Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Iraq, be part of it one day. And I want to see more horses from Russia and Turkey participating in international races. We will succeed, the sponsors exist: (Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Dubai, Oman), they have a lot of motivation and enough money. I hope that the jockey clubs of the world will be more open to Arabian horses, and will have a better understanding of Arabian owners and their horses, plus their money, and realize that there is a possibility to expand the number of Arabian horses … which means more owners, trainers, money, employment, and entertainment. If you could have dinner with anyone involved with Arabian racing, past or present, who would it be and why?

Mr. Martial Boisseuil, the manager for HH Sheikh Mansoor from Abu Dhabi. Martial is an “encyclopedia,” he knows everything about Arabian horses, bloodlines, the results of the races from all around the world; he has an amazing memory and can describe the conformation of a horse but also tell you if the family had good feet or not, was anxious, nervous, or crazy, tall or smallish, sprinters or stayers. On top of it, he is always happy and funny!

hen *Sambor arrived in the United States in 1969, his advance publicity came through the accomplishments of his sire and dam. His dam *Sabellina won the Polish Derby and the Oaks. *Sambor’s sire Czort established an enviable race record in Poland, winning 13 of his 19 starts. *Sabellina and Czort were considered the best and most successful racehorses in Poland, post-World War II. Mr. Leon Rubin of Sir William Farm at Hillsdale, New York, visited Poland in 1968, offered Zenon Lipowicz a job at the farm, and asked Zenon to select several Polish racehorses to bring to the United States. Both Mr. Rubin and Zenon chose carefully. Zenon’s career included training horses for steeplechasing and training Arabians for racing, beginning in 1958 at the Sopot track on the Baltic Sea. *Sabellina was one of his most successful students. Zenon chose *Sambor, *Sabellina’s 1965 son sired by Czort. Zenon had high praise for *Sambor: “He had excellent conformation and a nervous system made of iron. He was extremely powerful and yet so gentle that small children could safely sleep in his stall.” For Mr. Rubin’s second racehorse, Zenon chose *Algorab (then at Janow Podlaski), and he escorted the two to their new home — first by rail from Warsaw to Paris, then by Air France jet to New York City. At Sir William, the travelers were joined by Jolanta, Zenon’s wife, and they were all soon off to Turf Paradise in Phoenix, Arizona, where *Sambor was scheduled to race. There, *Sambor showed little interest in running and the track bettors had little confidence in him. But the *Sambor will came through. In his first race, he passed all the other horses, was leading at the halfway point, and won by 15 lengths. “There was dead silence in the grandstands,” Zenon remembered, “and very few people ran to the windows to collect their win money. But Yola and I were very happy — *Sambor’s first victory in the United States and my first success as a trainer in my new country.” After that win, *Sambor moved on to Oklahoma City (the site of the 1971 Nationals), where races were scheduled. There he became the National Championship Racehorse and later was inducted to the Racing Hall of Fame. With all that glory, *Sambor was retired from racing, and went home to Sir William Farm where Bill Bohl started his show training. He won park and English pleasure classes, and was moved along to the breeding barn. Mr. and Mrs. Rubin bred *Sambor for 68 of his lifetime total of 323 foals, according to Arabdatasource. The *Sambor winning habits were passed on to his get, and he is credited with founding the most productive racing bloodline in the United States. His son Sam Tiki is a Darley Champion and member of the Racing Hall of Fame, with a record of 4/21(10-4-3)6-6, $100,989. He has sired 217 foals, many excelling in both racing and endurance, including 2005 Darley Champion FourYear-Old Dixies Delight. Another example is the *Sambor son, Samtyr (x *Tryncza), bred by the Rubins and owned throughout his career by Sam Harrison. He was National Champion Racehorse, breaking four track records, and had a lifetime record of 2/14 (11-2-1). He sired 265 purebred offspring including over 30 stakes winners. Other of *Sambor’s stakes-winning progeny include Samcherie and CR Samborsta. In October 1984 *Sambor began his retirement years in the care of Martha Dean Thurmon, an ardent fan and breeder of 30 *Sambor foals, at her September II Farm in Florida. Zenon and Yola visited him there, and Zenon remembered: “*Sambor recognized us. He followed Yola like a dog and put his head on her shoulder.” *Sambor enjoyed three years at September II Farm and died in November 1987, a lasting hero of the Arabian racing world. 61 b ARABIAN RACING YEARBOOK b WORLD

breeding with Arabian Horse World. As chief steward of the Darley Award, what changes have you seen in the Darley Awards in recent years?

After the economic meltdown of 2008, new life was breathed into the ARC when the HH Sheikh Mansoor Global Arabian Horse Racing Festival joined us as partners, sponsoring our 25th Silver Anniversary Darley Awards in 2012. Along with the traditional Darley Awards for U.S. Champions, the HH Sheikha Fatima Ladies Darley Awards, honoring the international women in Arabian racing, was established. This partnership is now coming up on its third event together, which will be held in Hollywood, California, April 4 and 5. Another important development happened in 2013 when the Stewards voted to increase the Darley Awards Voting Academy by a 35 percent increase in the members voting for the champions. This allows an increased cross-section of the Arabian racing community to be heard. The event will be in Hollywood, California, this year. What unique attributes does that venue provide?

The location in Hollywood at the Dolby Theater brings instant worldwide attention and focus on Arabian horses. It’s about Arabian racing but the breed itself will benefit from this incredible exposure.

What are your hopes and expectations for the 2014 racing season in the United States?

My biggest hope is that breeding increases in 2014. With the increased demand for Arabian racehorses to fill the racing venues, as well as the strong market for top race-bred Arabians, both here and abroad, we need “inventory” to fill the demands. My highest expectation for 2014 is to see the exciting crop of three- and four-year-olds debut. The next star, the next champion is always a thrill to discover. In your 25 years of involvement in the sport, you have seen Arabian racing grow from a grassroots sport, recede, and, in recent years, expand to be showcased at major venues. What do you see as potential avenues for growth?

Always a potential, if not an absolute necessity, is the grassroots movement. We can’t ignore this important aspect of our industry. But specifically targeted, quality racehorse auctions are, without question, the most important avenue for growth. Racehorse auctions bring together breeders, trainers, buyers, and bloodstock agents, creating a unique energy that fuels the industry. It is the benchmark of the racing industry, as proven by the all important Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse auctions. The U.S. must have an Arabian racehorse auction if we are to meet the demands of growth. In terms of your personal involvement in racing, what are you the most proud of?

My 25-plus years of unwavering dedication to our racing industry, my unending love of the Arabian horse, and the close friends I’ve made over the many years. Looking back at the 2013 season, what were your favorite moments? How about the highlight in all your years in Arabian racing?

Seeing Arabians racing at Santa Anita was truly my dream come true and could likely be the highlight of all my years in Arabian racing, as well. You have an extensive background in Arabian racing bloodlines. What are the current trends in breeding, and what changes have occurred that either alarmed or encouraged you?

Perhaps a bit of an alarm almost two decades ago, but now the French influence through their sire lines is completely integrated into the U.S. racing programs, and we are well into our third generation of this successful cross. Now, our Arabian racehorses have gained the respect they deserve on the world’s racing circuit, and the demand for U.S.-bred Arabians has increased dramatically around the world.

As a promoter, what steps can anyone involved in racing take to get more people active in the sport?

Introducing a newcomer to an Arabian horse is always a great way to start. It’s hard to deny the spell a beautiful Arab can have over a person. A trip to the track for the races and meeting owners and trainers, watching the gallops in the morning, and a visit to the breeding farm are all surefire ways to spark an interest in a newcomer. Once they’re “hooked,” give them support and let them know you are there to help and answer any questions anytime. You were at Santa Anita in November, what were your thoughts that weekend as Arabians competed on Breeders’ Cup weekend?

Surreal, emotional, proud, and thrilled. I could go on, but enough said…. What’s your favorite racetrack in the country? The world?

Santa Anita for its importance, Los Alamitos for its fond memories, Longchamp for its elegance, San Isidro Hippodrome for its ultimate “horse heaven,” Happy Valley for its unbelievable energy, Keeneland for its “country class,” and Delaware Park for its beautiful saddling paddock, so many more…. What do you admire most about Arabians?

Beauty, heart, personality, brains, history, endurance, and the breed’s ability to survive under any and all circumstances.

The veteran So Big Is Better (Burning Sand x WW Mirror Image by ZT Ali Baba) was part of those stakes, finishing behind Valiant Boy at Churchill Downs and Delaware Park. At the time, it seemed as if the rankings were definitive between the two. By the end of the year, the story had changed. So Big Is Better, the champion older male of 2012, made Arabian racing history in the final months of 2013, leaving an argument for him to be considered the top older male of the year. Choosing between them was not an easy task for the voters entrusted to select the 2013 Horse of the Year, and older male of the year titles. Unfortunately, the two horses will not meet again. So Big Is Better ended 2013 with a win in the President of the United Arab Emirates Cup at Santa Anita on November 1, but emerged from the race with an injury that ended his racing career. Valiant Boy, who races for Guy Neivens and trainer Ron Martino, was sidelined with a hind leg injury last July, but is scheduled to race in 2014. His brief campaign left race goers wanting more. 64 ▪ ARABIAN RACING YEARBOOK ▪ WORLD

Valiant Boy began his career in France, and won the Bob Magness Derby and Texas Arabian Derby in 2012, his first full year of racing in the United States. For his 2013 campaign, Martino chose an allowance at Delaware Park in late May as a starting point. Valiant Boy won the one-mile race by a cozy two lengths. Arabians raced at Churchill Downs for the $103,695 President of the United Arab Emirates Cup on June 15, a race that brought together runners from throughout the nation. Valiant Boy was the 6-5 favorite based on his reputation and ran to expectations. He drew away from seven rivals to win by five lengths. “Running at Churchill is always a major thrill,” Martino said earlier this year. “It could have been an allowance race and it would still rate right up at the top.” The Churchill Downs win scared off much of Valiant Boy’s competition for the $30,000 Valour Farm/MoKee Arabians Stakes at Delaware Park on July 6. Valiant Boy had just four rivals and was the heavy favorite. He won by five lengths — again. Valiant Boy ran 11/16 miles in 1:54.84, a track record at Delaware Park for Arabians. “Anytime you set a track record, that makes it pretty special,” Martino said. Valiant Boy emerged from the Valour Farms Arabian Stakes with an injured hind ankle, Martino said. The setback did not require surgery, but resulted in a lengthy rest.

The Front-runner in Racing and Endurance Coverage On October 4 at nearby SaintCloud Racecourse, Loraa (Mawood x Aleefa by Kesberoy) won her first stakes in the $135,000 Qatar Arabian Trophy for three-year-old fillies. The same day, Chaddad (Mared Al Sahra x Nisaee by Dormane) won the first race of his career in the $135,000 Qatar Arabian Trophy for three-year-old colts. When racing shifted to Longchamp for the weekend, one of the major stakes on the October 5 program was the $205,000 Qatar Arabian Trophy for four-year-old fillies. Samima (Dahess x Oleya du Loup by Kerbella) won the most prestigious race of her career in a stakes that trainer Karin Van Den Bos had as a goal for the entire season.

hen the famous French jockey guided Mushrae (Munjiz x Djezika by Dormane) into the stretch of the $945,000 Qatar Arabian World Cup at Longchamp Racecourse on October 6, Soumillon was where he wanted to be — following Muntasar (Majd Al Arab x Danie du Cassou by Dahr). Muntasar was the star runner in Qatar earlier in the year, winning the Group 1 Qatar International Trophy; and in France over the summer, winning the Group 1 Doha Cup at Deauville.

A week after the race, it was unclear whether Mushrae would be sent to Abu Dhabi for the winter, or would remain in France to prepare for the 2014 season. “He was perfect after the race,” said Martial Boisseuil, racing manager for Sheikh Mansour. “He won more than 500,000 euros this year. He’s a very good horse. He has the potential to be a good breeding stallion in the future.” The Qatar Arabian World Cup was run on the same program as the $6.4 million Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Europe’s top race for older Thoroughbreds. The Arabian World Cup drew a field of 14 that included Areej, the winner of the 2011 race; Mkeefa and Rathowan, who were first and second

Thrilling Finish at Longchamp

Stay close to Muntasar, Soumillon thought, and Mushrae will have every chance. Muntasar took the lead with 300 meters to go in the race over 1¼ miles, but he did not hold the lead for long. Mushrae, who raced behind the leaders for the first mile, moved alongside Muntasar with a quarter-mile to go and fought with that rival to the line to win Europe’s top race for Arabians by a neck. It was a thrilling finish in a race that brought together many of Europe’s top Arabian runners. For Soumillon, it was job well done. “We really had a great race,” he said. “I chose to follow (Muntasar) and we managed to adjust in the last few meters.” Mushrae, who races for Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi, capped a remarkable year with his win. It was a remarkable weekend for Arabian racing in the City of Lights. The Group 1 Qatar Arabian World Cup was the fourth and final major stakes for Arabians in Paris on the first weekend of October.

Christophe Soumillon had his target.

The four-year-old Mushrae has risen through the ranks over the last 18 months with success from the start. His career trek made the victory at Longchamp easy to expect. In 2012, Mushrae won the Qatar Arabian Trophy for three-year-olds at Saint-Cloud, solidifying his position as one of the best of his generation. Mushrae’s 2013 season began on the same note, with wins in the Group 2 Prix Carthage-Hannibal at Toulouse in April, and the $195,000 Al Shahania Stud Derby des pur-sang Arabes at Chantilly in June. His only loss of the year was a third to Muntasar in the Group 1 Doha Cup. That setback helps explain Soumillon’s mind-set as the Qatar Arabian World Cup unfolded.
