y any measure, *Simeon Shai was a king among stallions. Yet what set him apart was not something marked on any judges card or counted in the breeding shed. It was his soul that spoke through his dark, luminous eyes, and his heart that gave whatever you asked. He was like the desert horse of old: a treasured companion living quietly among his people but ready at any moment to show strength, brilliance, and courage. His story is well-known. Foaled in 1984, the son and grandson of horses imported from the U.S. and Babolna Stud in Hungary to Australia by Marion Richmond. He captivated international judge Bruce Clark, who partnered with Gerry Alexander and Ron and Joyce Palelek to bring him to the U.S. in 1989. A triumphant sweep of Scottsdale, Canadian and U.S. Nationals, and Paris in 1991 — the only stallion ever to take all four titles in the same year. Success as a sire on every bloodline. A long-lived ambassador for the breed, who showed off for visitors at every opportunity. His show wins celebrated his type, structure, and athleticism. But it was his temperament that is always mentioned by the people who lived with him and who have his get and grandget. “He had good, straight legs and was very athletic, with good movement. He also had a wonderful, kind temperament, which is a must for the ‘user friendly’ Arabian,” says Marion Richmond.
Bruce Clark recalls the first time he saw Shai. “As I stood in front of one of the stalls, a bay stallion, tied at the back wall, flung his head around and looked straight at me, and I was smitten,” says Clark. “I just couldn’t get Shai out of my mind. Months later, when he arrived in California, he was as cool as if he’d just come from down the street, rather than having spent about 24 hours in flight and 36 hours in quarantine (without exercise), and experienced a complete change of climate — about 108 degrees in Sydney and 18 degrees here. “Outside the showring he acted like a family horse, and that was his real and true nature,” Clark adds. “He could be a beautiful and charismatic halter stallion one moment, but the very next second, he’d be a lamb. He was just wonderful to be around.” In early 1990 Jean Freiday was hired to train and condition the stallion. “We rode about 15 miles every other day through the sand dunes near here, and he really enjoyed it,” she recalls. “He was a tough horse and really hung in there with all the cross-country riding, the schooling sessions, the shows, and everything that went with it. He had the character and personality to carry it off. And he was sound. We didn’t have to just ‘make it’ through the shows. He handled it beautifully, both mentally and physically.” “Jean Zabriskie and I have been involved with Shai and his get for twenty-four years. How amazing is that?” says Gerry Alexander. “He had the most wonderful character and passed

forward his quality, personality, and athleticism ... he will be missed. However, I am thankful for so many years with this horse and treasure the people he brought into our lives.” “I saw Shai for the first time at the 1991 Scottsdale show,” says Christie Metz. “Shai entered the showring with his tail carried like a fountain of ebony silk, his coat gleaming in the sunshine and, at times, he seemed to dance in place. So perfect was his outline as he posed for the judges that he appeared as a dark bronze sculpture. Although he spent his last 12 years with us, the impression he made that day will stay with me forever; I know there is a permanent etching of Shai on my heart.” Ron Palelek adds, “At home, inhand or under saddle, he was absolutely fearless. He’d walk up to anything he didn’t understand, size it up, figure out
what it was. Shying was not a part of his makeup. He was Mr. Cool, super intelligent. He had a style of his own, always with the charisma that just booms out at people.” For several years, Shai split each breeding season between Bruce and Gerry’s BruMarBa Arabian Stud in California and the Paleleks’ Vantage Point Farm in Washington. The laid-back stallion took the travel in stride. In 2001, Shai went to the Metzes’ farm in Florida to give breeders in the east easier access, and he then came west in 2003 to their new Silver Maple Farm in California. At Silver Maple, “he was always an absolute ham with a crowd of admirers,” says Christie. “He would get very big when he saw people waiting to see him. It seemed as if he grew six inches taller.” His foals gained a following among trainers and owners. Says Christie, 100 ▪ PYRAMID ▪ WORLD
“People clamored for ‘Shai babies’ because they were so willing and bonded so readily to their human. Trainers would call and plead, ‘can you send me all of your Shai babies?’” Those Shai foals made their marks in both halter and performance, at every level, and at both AHA shows and the Egyptian Event. More than 25 percent of his foals have show wins — a phenomenal record considering that fewer than 10 percent of Arabians are ever shown. His 11 sons and daughters that have U.S., Canadian, Youth, or Sport Horse National wins excelled in trail, western pleasure, sport horse, dressage, and sidesaddle, in addition to halter. At the Egyptian Event, 53 get have wins, also in both halter and performance. During the 12 years Shai was with Christie and Henry Metz, he continued to breed mares of all bloodlines around

the world. Christie continues, “We learned by living with Shai what it means to be around a legend and how the treasure and measure of this stallion is defined. He passed forward to his foals his very special physical and personality traits. They all have a harmony and balance of structure, exotic beauty paired with athleticism. The Metzes have bred three generations that will carry his legacy forward. More than 40 get, grandget, and great-grandget have graced the pastures at Silver Maple Farm. Shai’s first influence there comes through his daughter Shaia (x Bint Zlabiya). The Metzes showed Shaia to Egyptian Event Supreme Champion Mare, Canadian National Reserve Champion Mare, and U.S. Top Ten Mare in 1995. Ten years later Henry showed Shaia’s granddaughter, Om El Shadream (Dreamcatcher SMF

championship in amateur and an open championship in large competitive classes. Shai’s intelligence and temperament were passed on to my Shaide.” That same temperament continued into the next generation. Two sons of Evening Shaide, Eclipse SA (x La Catrina) and Sundown SA (x PG Beau Lady), earned their Legion of Supreme Honor and Legion of Supreme Merit from their successes both in halter and performance (principally dressage and sport horse). Shai left 469 purebred get and more than 1,250 grandget found all over the world. In just the U.S., 120 sons and daughters have show wins. More sons and daughters are found in Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Namibia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Spain. Many of those are with amateur riders and handlers who have succeeded in every discipline. Looking forward, Shai’s influence will be found in descendants, successful competitors, and beloved companions of the “live in your tent” Arabian who charmed the crowds and stole our hearts.

Having been the caretakers of this great champion and influential sire, the loss of *Simeon Shai must leave Christie and Henry with an emptiness that cannot be filled. Our hearts go out to them. *Simeon Shai’s passing reminds me of how blessed we are to have his son, Aggie Shai. This majestic stallion has captured my heart.
