Future.

I think “future” is the one word that would define my focus since becoming manager of Al Shaqab’s breeding and show department in 2009.

A

t Al Shaqab we are breeders who show horses. Establishing a strategy to manage the show program was quite easy: the horses and their happiness, their welfare, would be our highest priorities when selecting which horses to take to the show and how many shows to take them to. But

this decision actually comes after placing the horse into a training and conditioning program. Our program is good for the horses — I want them to learn, to have basic training, and to be put to work. A horse that can longe properly, swim, and behave accordingly in the hot walker and on the treadmill is an educated horse, ultimately an intelligent horse and this intelligence serves them when they travel long distances or encounter unusual circumstances. We evaluate the horses throughout the training and conditioning process and ask the many talented trainers located around the world who show Al Shaqab’s horses, to implement this same philosophy. If the horses are happy, receptive, willing to show, then please show them.

Of course, once a horse is selected to be shown many factors contribute to accomplishing the ultimate goal, a championship, and this excludes the possibility of injury. We hope the horses never have to suffer an injury but it can happen, during exercise or travel, for example. Simply, we are guided by the horses when pursuing their show careers and I believe this simple strategy has been the foundation for our show success, in some cases record-breaking success, during the past four years.

Breeding is another matter! It is true that we aim to breed 100 foals each year. That said, I firmly believe that the breeder producing one foal has the potential to breed a horse of better conformation and higher quality than the breeder who produces 100 foals. I’m always looking to the future. Our primary stallions, Al Adeed, Gazal, and Marwan are established, they are well represented in the breeding program and we maintain a significant supply of frozen semen. Now we need to determine their successors. Before I go on, one might think that Al Shaqab will not breed another stallion to equal, let alone surpass, Marwan’s breeding

and showing accomplishments, but that is no reason not to try. To obtain results somewhere even close to our goals, to accomplish the future we dream of, we must aim high and for this reason I am trying to increase our chances and that is why we try to produce 100 foals each year.

One hundred foals make for a competitive breeding environment. The breeding horses are under constant evaluation, our primary consideration is, are the horses consistently reproducing their most desirable characteristics and have they proven capable of producing quality? Both questions are considered with equal merit and we don’t discriminate against any bloodline, even with the straight Egyptian program.

The question is all that matters: is the horse capable of reproducing to our specifications? With the broad array of bloodlines represented in the Al Shaqab herd, coupled with extensive travel to breeders around the world we have a growing database of the consistent reproduction of characteristics and quality. Every breeding decision is based on knowledge of the standard of excellence and in collaboration with my team. Every thought, observation, and opinion is considered, and any member of my staff is welcome to make a contribution. Making breeding decisions is an ongoing process and has proven to be the most significant subject in bonding us as a team. Sometimes these discussions can become quite passionate and on more than one occasion we’ve talked late into the night only to return the next morning to pick up where we left off. We never tire of this discussion. It is the fuel for our goals, for our hopes, for our dreams of the future.

But please remember, this strategy is utilized in an attempt to accomplish our goals. Showing and breeding in particular are highly personal matters and it is absolutely not my intention to dictate our opinions, theories, and ideas to anyone.

ome of those goals have already manifested in accomplishments even greater than we dreamt. Fadi Al Shaqab (Besson Carol x Abha Myra by Marwan Al Shaqab) started this chain of events with a successful 2010 show season that

culminated with the title of Reserve World Champion Colt, a moment of elation that has now been surpassed with the arrival of his foals. For Al Shaqab the 2013 colt Falah Al Shaqab (Fadi Al Shaqab x Joseph Just Emotion by WH Justice) and the 2013 filly Farida Al Shaqab (Fadi Al Shaqab x Aleysha Al Nasser by Gazal Al Shaqab) are among the best of all the foals born this season. And Fadi has bred with note for many others.

Magnolia Apal and Disputa FA have both produced promising foals for Athbah Stud.

And we are honored that Haras Aratinga of Brazil, Haras Mayed of Argentina, Al Zobair Stud of the UAE, Al Naif Stud and Al Nasser Stud in Qatar have chosen Fadi, along with many other dedicated breeders who tell us they appreciate Fadi for his almost perfect conformation and movement, his refined bone and ideal temperament.

ahil Al Shaqab (Marwan Al Shaqab x OFW Mishaahl) followed Fadi’s success in 2011. Like Fadi, Kahil captured a number of important titles throughout his season and ultimately that of 2011 unanimous Gold World Champion Colt at the Salon du Cheval after winning his class with a staggering eight points above

the second-place competitor. And while this was a breathtaking triumph, we had already attained an insight into Kahil’s siring ability. Six foals were born in 2011 and it was their presentation at the WAHO Conference that year that convinced Dr. Marek Trela, Director of Janów Podlaski Polish State Stud, to lease Kahil for the 2012 and 2013 breeding seasons. During Kahil’s time in Poland both Janów and Michalow utilized him as did some of the private breeders. This lease was a valuable opportunity for Kahil, one we could not have afforded him alone and we will be forever grateful to Dr. Trela for this opportunity. By all reports Kahil has proven to be a successful sire in Poland, consistently stamping his offspring with his look and quality. For Al Shaqab, those 2011 foals have begun their show careers. His eldest son, Ghalib Al Shaqab (Kahil Al Shaqab x Gazala Al Shaqab by Gazal Al Shaqab), and eldest daughter, Zenat Al Shaqab (Kahil Al Shaqab x ZT Maghan by AB Magnum) were both named 2012 Qatar National Champion Foals and 2013 Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Arabian Horse Festival Gold Champion Yearling Colt and Filly. This was followed by Kahlah Al Shaqab (Kahil Al Shaqab x Aleysha Al Nasser by Gazal Al Shaqab) being named 2013 West Coast Cup Silver Champion Yearling Filly and Minwah (Kahil Al Shaqab x LC Primavera by Padrons Psyche), bred by myself and owned by Aljassimya Stud, Qatar, being awarded Menton Yearling Gold Champion Filly, both at their first shows! And 2013 has presented us with two spectacular fillies, Al Anood Al Shaqab from Miss El Power JQ and Shaikha Al Shaqab from Shalimar Prestige.

hey say lightning doesn’t strike in the same place twice, but 2012 saw the show debut of Wadee Al Shaqab (Marwan Al Shaqab x OFW Mishaahl), Kahil’s full brother. Wadee also enjoyed a successful show season and earned the title of Gold World Champion

Colt! To the best of my knowledge this was the first time full brothers have been named World Champion in successive years. Wadee began his breeding career this year. Having received breeding inquiries from all around the world we are delighted that mares are confirmed in foal

At Al Shaqab we have 10 mares in foal and are especially grateful to Dubai Stud, UAE, on their acquisition of a multiple breeding package that will afford Wadee an outstanding opportunity to demonstrate his ability to consistently reproduce his most desirable characteristics and quality with their extensive collection of wellbred mares.

And it would seem that lightning can strike three times. In another amazing event for this overachieving family, OFW Mishaahl has delivered a third full sibling to Kahil and Wadee this year — a colt of equal merit.

e began to further spread our wings across the Americas in 2010. Negma Al Shaqab (Safir x Kajora) was named Reserve Champion Senior Mare at the Arabian Breeders World Cup in Las Vegas and at the U.S. Nationals along with Champion Mare and

Supreme Female at the Egyptian Event. The straight Egyptian stallion Farhoud Al Shaqab (Al Adeed Al Shaqab x Johara Al Shaqab) accompanied Negma to the Egyptian Event, his second show after winning Reserve Champion at the 2009 Egyptian Event Europe, to earn the title of Egyptian Event Champion Colt and Supreme Male at just two years of age. Farhoud quickly settled into a breeding career and has emerged a leading sire among all the stallions at Al Shaqab.

His eldest daughter, Layali Al Shaqab (x QR Annah Ferrari), was named 2012 Egyptian Event Champion Filly at her first exhibition while a group of two- and three-year-olds are poised to make their mark. Farhoud is just five years of age and his 2012 sons Areeb Al Shaqab (x Sondous Al Shaqab by Ashhal Al Rayyan) and Thaiar Al Shaqab (x Thiba Al Shaqab by Hadban Al Shaqab) have already been identified as potential straight Egyptian successors. And Farhoud’s 2013 foal crop has presented us with a highly promising bay colt from Pilar (Fawor x Pipi), and an utterly mesmerizing chestnut filly from Olivia Rose JCA (Brandon Bey JCA x Fforever Rose).

he year 2010 also saw the lease of Faraa Al Shaqab (Marwan Al Shaqab x GW Natorious Star) to Joaquin and Fernando de Santibañes of Haras Mayed, Argentina. Faraa traveled in December and bred during the 2011 and 2012 seasons. This lease was one of the first and most important breeding decisions we have

made. We traveled to Haras Mayed in 2009 and were awestruck by their extensive group of high quality, wellconformed Magnum Psyche daughters. They had developed a group of successful breeding families, very much in the tradition of our philosophy at Al Shaqab. To our complete delight Joaquin and Fernando agreed to work with us, and the foals, in our opinion, are nothing less than remarkable. They made all the breeding decisions and under their stewardship Faraa was given an extraordinary opportunity to test his siring ability. Today we are the proud owners of three Haras Mayed-bred Faraa daughters, JJ Farabella (x JJ Bella Rose by Magnum Psyche), JJ Domyla (x JJ Dominique by Magnum Psyche), and JJ Joyriana (x Joyeuse NY by RSC Carhif ). We have very high expectations of the 2012 colt JJ Aphajair (x JJ Afartiti by Magnum Psyche) and consider JJ Argentina (x Diva Girl by Versace) to be among the best horses we have ever seen.

ur stallion leasing program has evolved over the past two years. Our priority has always been the proven stallions, Al Adeed, Gazal, and Marwan, and this

limited the opportunities we could afford the junior stallions.

Jadaan Al Shaqab (Ashhal Al Rayyan x Torfa Al Shaqab by Al Adeed Al Shaqab) was leased to Jenny and Peter Pond of Forest Hill Stud, Australia, in 2011. Jadaan is a straight Egyptian and

in my mind that Jadaan will make a significant contribution over the long term. At Forest Hill Jadaan bred both straight Egyptian and non-straight mares of varied pedigrees. The Jadaan foals consistently represented quality, correct conformation, substance, athleticism, and extreme type. Of course, like all the breeders we seek to work with, Jenny and Peter’s mares are of the highest quality and represent uniformity of type. ader Al Shaqab (WN Star Of Antigua x Aliaa Al Shaqab) was leased to Lone Husted of Husted Arabians in Denmark, in 2012. Nader was 2012 Tulip Cup Champion, Vilhelmsborg Champion, Ströhen Champion, and Elran Cup Silver Champion. To be honest, if Nader’s second foal crop had been born

before his departure to Denmark, he would not have been leased. The first foal crop ultimately consisted of two, a nice colt and a filly we liked, Mammona Al Shaqab, who had the honorary distinction of being offered in our Qatari Support Program. The second crop of seven foals made a significant impression. Of these seven, two are among the finest Al Shaqab-bred foals born in 2013. Sfwan Al Shaqab (x Rahaf Al Shaqab, a full sister to Marwan), is a grey colt who, like his sire, will be slow to mature. However, I am confident that in time Sfwan will make his mark. Ghazl Al Shaqab (x Gazala Al Shaqab by Gazal Al Shaqab) is an elegant bay filly born for the showring! By our calculation one great foal in ten is the mark of a good breeding stallion — Nader sired two from seven, plus his pedigree is free of Gazal and Al Adeed. This makes him very valuable to us. We look forward to his return at the end of 2014 and his future contribution to Al Shaqab. But for now we wish Lone and her clients all the happiness and success they dream of with their Nader foals. It has been gratifying to see how much Lone cares for Nader. Her attention to his every need is commendable — everything we try to foster at Al Shaqab.

ashir Al Shaqab (Marwan Al Shaqab x SWF Valencia) was leased to Wendy Delvalle and Adrianus Kuijf of Forelock’s Arabians in Holland. We’ve always appreciated Bashir for his strong conformation, unstoppable show style attitude, and his dam.

With her consistent production, SWF Valencia has established a family at Al Shaqab. She is among our leading broodmares and is represented by four daughters in the program.

Bashir was popular with private breeders in Qatar and Saudi Arabia and we are impressed by the promising foals already on the ground. Although he arrived at Forelock’s Arabians late in the season he bred a good number of mares in Europe and we are anxious to see his contribution there.

r. Jody Cruz visited us earlier this year and I asked if we could further extend our collaboration. Jody has become our friend, he travels with us frequently, and we admire his breeding program. To my delight

Jody inquired after Lebinon Al Shaqab (Alidaar x Lamia Al Shaqab by Ansata Hejazi), a straight Egyptian colt and the last son of Alidaar. His reasoning was simple and convincing: having inspected Lebinon privately prior to our discussion Jody had concluded that Lebinon possessed the desirable conformation, length of leg, athleticism, pigment, head type, and large black eyes — all the traits we both value highly and are looking to, to strengthen and to elevate our straight Egyptian breeding programs. Jody expects that Lebinon could further perpetuate these valuable characteristics, already well-established at Rancho Bulakenyo, while also incorporating so many of the old and important horses in Lebinon’s beautiful pedigree. This is an exciting opportunity and with semen now frozen for worldwide export Lebinon will stand at Rancho Bulakenyo beginning in January 2014.

he 2012 U.S. Egyptian Event was a momentous occasion for our longestablished straight Egyptian and Egyptian-related breeding programs. Layali Al Shaqab was named Gold Champion Filly, Ghasham Al Shaqab was named

Gold Champion Colt, Hooria Al Shaqab was named Gold Champion Mare, and Hadban Al Shaqab (Ashhal Al Rayyan x Sundar Alisayyah) was named unanimous Gold Champion Stallion and Highest-Scoring Horse. We share Hadban’s title with his lessee Dr. Jody Cruz of Rancho Bulakenyo, in California. Jody has one of the best straight Egyptian breeding programs in the world. His mares have excellent pedigrees, they’re tall, correct, well pigmented, athletic, long necked and all have big

black eyes. Jody is a talented breeder, and Hadban, with his own ideal conformation has been a perfect inclusion in the Rancho Bulakenyo program. His first Rancho Bulakenyo bred foal, Beyond Imagination RB (x Justmyimagination by *Orashan), was World Class Reserve Champion Yearling Filly at her first and only show to date, the 2013 Egyptian Event, and we are smitten with Binte Romanaa MH (x Romanaa Maara MH by El Halimaar), another outstanding 2012 straight Egyptian filly. Hadban followed his Egyptian Event success with Region 2 unanimous Champion and U.S. National Reserve Champion Stallion Eight Years and Older. We’re told Hadban is the first straight Egyptian stallion in eighteen years to earn a U.S. Nationals halter title. Jody has a large contingent of clients based around the world, all of whom have bred their best mares and we are most grateful for their support of Hadban. Our collaboration with Jody has been completely fulfilling and Hadban’s lease to Rancho Bulakenyo has been extended until the end of the 2015 breeding season.

oaquin de Santibañes introduced us to Lady Gina Pelham and we had the privilege of visiting Haras La Catalina at Gina’s magnificent estancia in Argentina. We spent nearly two days with Gina and I cannot tell you how much we enjoyed our visit and how grateful we are for the

introduction. Our mutual respect has led to the lease of Marsal Al Shaqab (Marwan Al Shaqab x Miss El Power JQ). As an individual, Marsal is among our most promising sons of Marwan, representing the best conformation of his sire and dam. Miss El Power JQ is an accomplished show horse having been named Brazilian National Champion, Menton Champion, Dubai Gold Cup Champion, among other prestigious awards, and she has, with the production of just three foals, exhibited that she is capable of consistently reproducing her most desirable characteristics and quality. I expect Miss El Power JQ will establish a prominent family at Al Shaqab and we are looking to Marsal to perpetuate Miss El Power JQ throughout the program. Marsal will breed a number of Al Shaqab mares via frozen semen in 2014 and stand with Haras La Catalina until 2015.

mir Al Shaqab (Gazal Al Shaqab x Amira Madrona) would be the leader among our list of emerging stallions. And with just two foal crops on the ground we already have a most promising son, Sultan Al Shaqab (x Abha

Al Shaqab). Amir has been shown sparingly to date having won Championships at Wels, the Qatar Nationals as a colt and stallion, and Qatar International Reserve as a colt, while Sultan was named Menton Yearling Champion at his first show. He was just nine months of age! Amir has sired ten foals to date. Typically his offspring exhibit his strong conformation, long level croup, length of leg, and athleticism.

Amir is a high-quality individual and we intend to give him and Sultan more significant breeding and showing opportunities in the future.

ariq Al Shaqab (Al Adeed Al Shaqab x Wahayeb Al Shaqab) is among our most significant emerging straight Egyptian sons of Al Adeed. He was awarded Gold Champion at the

2013 Qatar International Straight Egyptian and Berlin Cup shows and will begin his breeding career next season. As a grandson of Johara Al Shaqab, our most accomplished straight Egyptian breeding mare, the dam of international champions Farhoud Al Shaqab and Amwaj Al Shaqab and granddam of Sultan Al Zobara (Gazal Al Shaqab x Inra Al Shaqab [Wahag Al Shaqab x Johara Al Shaqab]), the 2012 Gold World Champion Yearling Colt, we have already selected a good number of straight Egyptian and non-straight mares for Bariq. We have high expectations for Bariq as a breeding horse and are confident he will live up to those expectations.

ast but certainly not least is Hariry Al Shaqab (Marwan Al Shaqab x White Silkk). From the perspective of conformation, type, and quality, we believe Hariry places equally among our most accomplished stallions. As an individual he meets our highest criteria. Certainly,

his features make him unique, perhaps one of those rare individuals who equates to greater than the sum of his parents. As a show horse Hariry was awarded the most significant North American titles: 2012 Scottsdale unanimous Champion, and U.S. National Champion Colt, and most recently, 2013 unanimous U.S. National Champion Colt. As a sire Hariry has just two foals to date, a colt and filly and both exhibit Hariry’s ideal conformation and high quality. Truthfully, I am very enthusiastic about Hariry, and actually, we expect he holds one of the main keys to our future.

f course, none of this would be possible without the dedication and support of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Chairman of Al Shaqab’s Board, our staff and partners, and the resources that built

this state-of-the-art facility. However, resources alone cannot result in breeding and showing accomplishments, but rather it is the correct management of our resources and the hard work of my team and our partners, along with defined goals and strategies to implement those goals. These are the most significant factors contributing to what was defined as an ideal future in 2009, and remains so today.
