“T

ried and true” Texan simplicity is the best way to describe Kim Morgan Arabians. For over forty years, Kim has served her clients faithfully, earning APAHA (Arabian Professional & Amateur Horseman’s Association) Female Halter Trainer of the Year Award eight times and inducted in the APAHA Hall of Fame. As Kim explains, “My business has been built upon my clients’ trust in me and my commitment to them. If I can demonstrate loyalty and integrity, I feel I will get that in return.”

A key factor that keeps clients walking through the door of her training facility in Pilot Point, Texas, is that her halter horses have an uncanny willingness of going on to do great things in the performance world. For Kim, this has always been a priority. “I think it is really

important that the halter horse have athleticism,” explains Kim. “Especially in this day and age, a horse has a greater value if it possesses the ability to excel in performance, making it more financially viable for the owners. I think a lot of times people think a horse that does halter will be unruly and you will never be able to ride them at a high level.

Well, we have had a lot of success with taking horses in halter training and then having them go on to be successful under saddle.”

An early star of Kim’s program that showed this dual ability was superstar Musknitsa (*Muscat x *Prokaznitza by Arax). The chestnut mare was a multiple national winning halter mare as well as a champion in English pleasure. Others that excel under saddle are Canadian National Champion Gelding and AAOTH Taz Attack (Sanbara Tsali x VS

Great Ball Afire, Got the Blues, Great Expectation, Justa Preview, Juust One Look, Tuborg, and Bella Azh Naborr. Most recently, WS Center Stage has multiple national titles including Canadian National Reserve Champion Half-Arabian English Pleasure. She also will be competing in halter in Tulsa.

Another aspect of Kim’s training program that has always made her stand out is her great work with amateurs. The spotlight this year is on Patti Meier’s efforts, and is a great example of Kim’s program. “There is a lot more to Patti than just her ability to handle a horse,” comments Kim. “She is a great breeder, she is a great friend, always bringing new interest to the Arabian, and is the first one to roll up her sleeves and get to work. Those are qualities that you just don’t see all the time.”

In 2009 Patti won the Region 9 AOTH Championship with the mare MM La Bonita (EF Kid Curry x HM Shatala). Patti and MM La Bonita came back for an encore performance this year, again winning the Mare Championship AOTH. Moreover, MM La Bonita’s colt bred by Patti, MM Zhivago, won the Region 9 Two-Year-Old Colt Championship and will be headed to Nationals this year with Kim in the two-year-old colt class.

Of course, nothing at Kim Morgan Arabians happens without the great staff that has been assembled. It is especially essential when Kim is travelling to the numerous shows. Her husband Jim plays a key role. He is a large animal vet and NRHA Non-Pro competitor. The day-to-day operations fall to Jose Rodriguez, the ranch foreman who lives on site with his wife Alejandra, son Anthony, and daughter Kaylei. Jose has many gifts and his attention to detail keeps the ranch running smoothly. Deanna Eells takes care of all the administrative aspects, a huge task in and of itself, and Cindy Tores does the conditioning. Marsha Adamson comes from an Arabian racing background and helps in an advisory capacity.

Of course, extra staff is needed for an event as big as U.S. Nationals and joining the Kim Morgan Arabians team this year is Erika Studer, Sarah Colbert, Rogelio Arellano, Melissa Lawson, Phillip Wolfe, and Jesus Rodriguez. “We have had a lot of successes over the course of the show season and the group of horses that we are bringing to Tulsa this year are spectacular,” exclaims Kim. “I consider myself very blessed to be able to work with these horses and their owners.”
