For over 50 years, Arabian Horse World has presented annual recaps of Arabian registrations and transfers of ownership, providing a snapshot of the comparative vigor of our breed activity. Here are the numbers from 2017. The good news is, there was an uptick in purebred registrations and transfers of ownership, although the number of unique breeders fell by 825. We also have a new leading sire of foals registered in 2017: *Al Ayal AA (Al Ayad x The Vision HG) with 56 foals, followed by Afires Heir (Afire Bey V x Brassmis) with 44, and *Baha AA (Al Ayad x Baraaqa AA), with 34. Both *Al Ayal AA and *Baha AA are straight Egyptians bred by Ariela Arabians in Israel and are by the same sire. The last time a straight Egyptian stallion topped a Stud Book was 32 years ago when Shaikh Al Badi (*Morafic x *Bint

Maisa El Saghira) was the leading sire of Volume 58. “When the news came that *Al Ayal AA was the leading sire of registered foals in Studbook Volume 89 and that it was 32 years ago when a straight Egyptian stallion last managed to do that (Shaikh Al Badi), I was honestly not surprised,” says Aljassimya manager Bart Van Buggenhout, “as I knew the number of breedings we used. *Al Ayal AA has been an obvious choice for us but also for the few outside breeders who used him, believing in his consistency of overall quality get. No sire that I have known and worked with has had that level of consistency. *Al Ayal AA will prove to be paramount for the Aljassimya Farm breeding program in the years to come. Yes, he has sired champions, something most sires will do when large numbers of mares are bred. But above all, he sired a wonderful collection of potential

We extend our thanks to the Arabian Horse Association and Jenelle Fleming, Business Systems Analyst, and Debbie Fuentes, Senior Director of Registry Services, for providing material for this feature. *This block of registration numbers was not used for any horses in the 2016 registry year (Volume 88), but was assigned to horses for the 2017 registry year.
