ome events remind us why we fell in love with the Arabian horse. The Arabian Breeders World Cup show in Las Vegas is one such event. This year marks the 12th year of the competition. The show is opulent. At times, it lends the feel of a Broadway show with dramatic lighting, booming music, nervewracking moments of anticipation before scores are announced, and close-up opportunities to view the horses. The prizes are equally dramatic with beautiful, colorful saddles donated by the King of Morocco, Arabian horse busts, golden stirrups, and more. At the heart of the glitz and glamour are extremely high quality horses from breeding programs around the world competing for prizes. The beauty and excitement of the Arabian

horse is reflected in every detail and truly immerse the viewer in the community that surrounds our breed.

The stalls are situated on a single, more intimate floor underneath the hotel, which brings an unusual closeness between competitors and exhibitors alike. The opportunity for the people associated with the horses to forge new relationships is uniquely promoted by the venue’s setup. The Arabian Horse Breeders World Cup is a showcase competition for purebred Arabian breeding classes, conducted in the European style using the World Cup Scoring System, similar to the All Nation’s Cup in Aachen, Germany, and the World Championships at the Salon du Cheval in Paris, France. The show emphasizes a more natural way of showing the horses so that their true Arabian spirit shines. The show features international judges, a mix of the best from America, Europe, South Africa, and South America, with the goal of achieving the highest possible standards of judging.

The Board of Directors for the Arabian Horse Breeders Alliance, in developing this show, wanted to create an equal playing field for all competitors. All elements of the competition reflect this effort. From the judge selection, to the unique score card developed for this show, to the presentation process, all elements are geared towards cultivating a fair and fun competition. Larry Jerome, a board member of AHBA, summarizes the efforts to promote a fair show environment this way: “It is designed to be a breeder’s show, with an emphasis on a complete, balanced horse that phenotypically emulates the qualities of the classic Arabian horse. Although, it is not a copy of the European and Middle Eastern shows, there are certainly strong similarities. Judging by the scorecard and the comparative system both come into play. We also have an eightjudge panel. Therefore multiple opinions are rendered, which should help eliminate personal prejudice towards certain horses and handlers. These judges also represent an international flavor, as they are coming from around the world to participate.”

This show continues to draw breeders, exhibitors, and spectators from around the world. Each year, the classes grow, and the exhibitors attending grows with the participation. It is not just the open competitions that draw competitors, the amateur division also grows in numbers each year. There are prize money programs developed by the board to provide opportunities for exhibitors to participate with their own horses for large prize pots, but the draw definitely extends beyond just the opportunity to compete. everyone people coming back to Vegas: “The show’s intimate nature, quality of horses, and passion of the breeders and owners represented keeps everyone invigorated and excited. The venue is unique. There is a closeness and strong opportunity for all to interact. Everything is convenient and accessible.”

The show is constantly seeking input from exhibitors, owners, trainers, and spectators to further improve the experience for all involved. This is a show in constant evolution, looking to deliver the best competitive halter experience possible on the world stage. Few shows reflect the same fervor and passion year after year, making the Arabian Breeders World Cup an event you will not want to miss. As Larry says, “I would encourage anyone who loves horses to attend any show. You can always learn. As someone who enjoys all disciplines, I enjoy the World Cup as it provides a more intimate opportunity to view horses, as well as an opportunity to meet international breeders and evaluate your own breeding program and that of other successful individuals.
