The Future of Jaipur

Among the many festivities during Scottsdale week, one night in particular seemed to stand out for its elegance and restraint. It was not a sales event per se, but rather a welcome party for a handsome young stallion from Brazil, a son of one of the most beautiful mares in the world. Beneath a starry black sky and twinkling lights, 90 or so guests gathered at Greg Knowles’s Arabian Expressions. The convivial group, hosted by Frank Hennessey and the Jaipur Initiative, sipped caipirinhas and nibbled hors d’oeuvres … while some of us visited with *Jaipur El Perseus (Perseus El Jamaal x Jullye El Ludjin) in his stall, admiring his classic, old world beauty and gentlemanly disposition.

Jaipur was later shown at liberty, as were two of his get, the strapping twoyear-old colt Byzantium o (x Clio Belize) and Royal Arabians’ yearling filly Royal Pershephone (x Siennamon). Just the three of them … a tantalizing showing of lovely horses that gave everyone lots to talk about during the candlelit dinner that followed.

“There are a lot of pretty horses out there today, but Jaipur’s pedigree and that dam line make him unique and valuable in today’s contemporary Arabian scene,” says Greg Knowles.

“We saw Jaipur at Hennesseys’ and agreed with Frank that it was time for a collective effort to bring this really nice horse to prominence.

Frank came to me because of the success I’ve had with the Jamaal horses like Magic Dream (Ali Jamaal x The Dreamspinner) and Jiuliusz De Wiec (Debowiec x Jiullya El Jamaal). He believes I have a feel for them, and that I could market Jaipur most effectively. We thought that having a special evening, a select guest list, and a low-key showing would be a fitting way to introduce Jaipur to the Arabian community.”

The fact that Jaipur is in the U.S. at all is credit to the keen eye and exquisite taste of Arabian breeder Kirk Bardole of oOne LLC, in Miami Beach, Florida, and of course, his close friendship with famed Brazilian breeder Lenita Perroy.

One autumn morning in 2009, deep in the lush countryside near Campinas, Brazil, Kirk was sipping coffee with Lenita at her Haras Meia Lua farm. “One by one beautiful foals and their dams were paraded by as Lenita and I talked about pedigrees and which horses and farms we would see while I was in Brazil,” says Kirk. “One foal caught my eye and our conversation tilted. A beautiful bay with four matching socks and a stunning face danced beside a rather plain recipient mare. I asked Lenita who the beautiful ‘filly’ was (with the soft Bambi-like face it had to be a filly, I thought). Much to my surprise, Lenita said that it was a colt sired by her reigning star, the black Perseus El Jamaal.

She asked me if I liked the colt and I blurted out, ‘Of course I do! Who wouldn’t?’ He was extremely tall for a colt of just a few weeks of age, and carried himself with an air of confidence. His head was short, topped with perfect ears, huge eyes, and a tiny muzzle. I then asked who he was out of. Lenita’s eyes sparkled and she answered, Jullye of course! This colt was the son of the ethereal beauty, Jullye El Ludjin. He was truly his mother’s son.

“I was still speechless as we got organized to visit other farms. Later, I asked Lenita what the colt’s name was, and she said he was not yet named. All I could think about was this beautiful, nameless colt. For the rest of the week, I started each day by visiting him in his pasture with the other mares and foals. And every day, in our daily discussions of the horses we had seen, our conversations always returned to the colt. Finally Lenita asked me if I George Z, Greg Knowles & Frank Hennessey would like to have him; I said that I didn’t think it could be possible. A son of THE Jullye El Ludjin? Impossible.

She just smiled and said, ‘We will make it work.’ I knew at that moment that the colt would somehow, someday be part of oOne. At the end of the week, while making my last visit to see the nameless one, I asked Lenita if we could name him Jaipur in homage to the exotic pink city of India; a name fitting his powerful Jaipur as a foal beauty and stature.

It was agreed—he was now *Jaipur El Perseus, he was three weeks old, and he was mine.”

“He was, from his first day, destined to be a breeding stallion,” says Lenita. “I usually don’t want our colts to be sold very young—he was only two months old at the time, but I said yes to my friend Kirk.

Jaipur kept his good looks and was weaned, and became a tall elegant yearling much admired by visitors,” continues Lenita.

“His beauty is the heritage of all the horses in his pedigree. His sire line sequence is spectacular: Perseus, Ali Jamaal, Ruminaja Ali, Shaikh Al Badi, *Morafic, Nazeer and his dam Jullye El Ludjin is known as one of the most beautiful mares of our time, and founded one of the most important mare families at Haras Meia Lua. With all these wonderful genes, we expect that Jaipur will reproduce the image of his ancestors and himself.”

Jaipur spent the first year of his life growing up in Brazil at the farm of Kirk’s friend Fabio Amorosino. The idea was to allow him to have a stress-free youth away from the limelight in preparation for his eventual move to his new home in the U.S. Few people knew of his existence, but word had already escaped about “the beautiful son of Jullye.” The oOne mares were already in residence at Hennessey Arabians in Florida under the watchful eye of George Z, so the choice for Jaipur’s home was an easy one. “The farm is truly a heaven for horses,” says Kirk. “But Frank Hennessey has always said that the farm was a ladies only breeding farm (i.e., no stallions).

“I approached Frank with hesitation and told him that not only did oOne now have a stallion, but would it be possible for him to take up residence with Frank at his farm. Frank generously agreed that the next chapter of the story would continue at Hennessey Arabians, so at the end of his yearling year Jaipur was en route to Florida.

A few months ago under Frank’s guidance, the draft of a new partnership, The Jaipur Initiative, was written, and plans to take Jaipur to the next level began to take shape ... thus the unveiling in February.
