Dear Breeders and Lovers of the Arabian horse, Welcome to our traditional rendezvous with Arabian Horse Magazine.

At the height of the breeding and show season 2019, breeders from all over the world are having the chance to present their horses to international spectators and receive decorations. The Menton issue comes out is in a very interesting and animated part of the year. The numbers of entries with the plethora of horse events in Europe, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the U.A.E., and the U.S.A. have exceeded all expectations in 2019. There has been a big number of members of the world Arabian community, whether breeders, handlers, trainers, amateur, open riders or simply loyal visitors, moving around the globe to join in the most popular shows of the season: the 16th International Arabian Horses Championship in Dubai and the Prague-Inter Cup in Czech Republic. So far, Arabian Horse Magazine crew has not missed one single date on the ‘Italian Show Tour 2019�. We flew down to Palermo, up to Milan and down again to Pietrasanta. Having so many breeders par t icip at ing actively in the shows is a very positive d e v e l opm e nt for our Magazine as well as for the whole international Arabian horse community w h o s e m e m b e r s are having ever-growing opportunities to meet each other, exchange ideas, and gain valuable insights for their breeding program. For this edition, I had the chance to interview breeder Kathrin Hampe Klingebiel from EOS Arabians, Germany; handler Sandro Pihna from Brazil; judge Rashid Al Ali from the United Arab Emirates; painter Allan Banford from the UK; photographer Hamid Shokouhi from Iran, and Riding couple Manfred and Heike Hain from Germany. Each of them, each in their own way, is involved with the Arabian horse for different purposes and ends; but all share one common denominator, the love and devotion for this sacred animal. Following the success of previous editions, once again for Menton 2019 - a returns by public demand to the Art of Photography, a magnificent picture gallery showing a few glimpses of exciting shots made by Renato Sorvilo, Stewart Vesty, Christian Slawik, Silwya Ilenda and Henrike Hormann. I also managed to interview Polish model Weronika Bolchmaier. It was very nice to speak to her and hear her captivating family story. Her grandmother’s family tree traces back

to the aristocratic line of Pawlowicz family, who owned horses for many years. For the Fashion Hub, designer Tonya Pesch from Kansas presented her business company Nokota.Style and her fantastic outfits collections. Riding is where she found her passion for fashion. You will find out more details about Tonya Pesch and her horsey creations in the special section covering this project. Interesting and of great cultural thickness two more written contributions focusing on the history but conveying the magic that has always been surrounding the Arabian horse and the Oriental world where he was born. A well-researched, clear and thorough presentation about the famous Egyptian broodmare El Dahma and the Obeya Family written by Domenico Tocchi for the Straight Egyptian section. To finish up with a beautiful work about the Orientalist Art by William Richardot de Choisey.

Mainly born in Western Europe as an artistic movement around the 18th century, Orientalism and its magnitude can still be admired today thanks to the pictorial engagement of many international artists.

Arabian Horse Magazine is always very keen on introducing new people and initiatives intended to promote and celebrate the Arabian horse.

So, our special thank you go first and foremost to all contributors as without them this 2019 Menton edition could not be so beautiful and complete; to all of those who remained loyal to us and to the horses; but also to whom, even in hard times, spare no pains to invest time, money and enthusiasm to get prepared to meet in the various shows. Our special thank you also applies to the judges, the organizing teams and the many assistants. Thank you so much to all the sponsors; due to their generosity these wonderful and dignified shows are made possible at all. Beauty and performance should not be mutually exclusive.

The Arabian horse is sensitive, powerful and noble; may it find an equivalent breeder, owner or lover. For the year 2019, we will strive for a harmonious togetherness and would like to wish the exhibitors good success, all visitors interesting and long lasting impressions and deeply hope that you will enjoy the noble Arabian horse! industry. Born one year before Alihandro won the unanimous

World Junior Stallion Gold Championship at Paris, Mansour, in fact, comes from Alihandro’s very first foal crop. He also differs from many of his younger half-siblings in that he is not quite a

sired by the Spanish stallion GG Samir out of a Naborr daughter, making WN Star of Antigua three-quarters Polish and one-quarter Spanish; quite an unusual combination.

EKS Phateena’s dam Phaeddra is, as has already been noted, a

daughter of Marwan Al Shaqab, making her a paternal half-sister to EKS Alihandro. However, more outcross blood comes in through

her dam, Patrina de Parys. Patrina, one of the Elkasun foundation mares that came from Michael Byatt’s farm, is a daughter of Parys

de Jamaal, a son of the great Brazilian sire Ali Jamaal, who combines Egyptian and old Crabbet-American lines. Parys de Jamaal’s dam FF

Pavielle brings in additional Polish blood through her sire Gdansk, as well as old American linebred Skowronek blood. Patrina de Parys’s dam Palitrina is straight Russian, a daughter of the Menes, one of

the greatest breeding stallions ever to come from Tersk, out of Palitra

by Salon, bringing in the best old Russian bloodlines with all their

performance potential. The dam line continues down to the Crabbet mare Star of the Hills, one of the most important foundation mares of the Russian Tersk Stud, who in turn traced back to the Hamdani

Simri family of Abbas Pasha’s stud in Egypt. This family has been particularly notable at Tersk for producing outstanding champions and sires. Among the great stallions to emerge from this dam line are such legends of the breed as Palas, Plakat, Pesniar, Ponomarev, and

Balaton. Theirs are very big footsteps to follow in. But EKS Mansour, with his blend of the very best bloodlines of the past and the present, brings with him all the best requirements for taking his rightful place in their midst. And he is ready to make his move.

Beauty is a relative concept as Shakespeare says, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” But this Arabian filly really has something to be loved and appreciated by everybody.

“She is truly a gift from Heaven” add her owners Mr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed Sharif Al Baidhaei and Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim, respectively Chairman and Executive Director of Al Jawaher Stud. How not to give reason to it? With her beautiful

face, correct limbs and super trot, Fam Donatella put up an exceptional show at the recent Milan International B Show 2019. She blew out the board of judges with a flawless performance dancing towards the Gold together with handler Mr. Paolo Capecci. There is every reason to believe that this pretty filly will be capable of flying even higher than that. Fam Donatella does have the very best qualities of both sire and dam to become a real star horse.

H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance, on Thursday officially inaugurated the 16th Dubai International Arabian Horse Championship, DIAHC, the 15th Dubai International Horse Fair, DIHF, and simultaneous events running at the Dubai World Trade Centre, DWTC, until 23rd March. As two of the region’s most important Arabian equine platforms, the co-located events gathered a host of global and regional equine industry players across every professional and recreational segment, from stable and horse owners, breeders, professionals and veterinarians, to service and care providers, specialist product providers, leisure riders and everyday horse enthusiasts.

The show started on Thursday 21st, 2019 at 11:00 Asia/Muscat (08:00 - Europe/ Rome) and ended on Saturday 23rd, 2018 at 21:00 Asia/Muscat (18:00 Europe/Rome) with the Final Championship Classes. The finest Purebred Arabian horses participated in this unique worldwide competition and were contending for an incredible Prize Money of USD 4.000.000.

The DIAHC hosted also halter and ridden classes and a showcase for the endurance/ racehorses that are so central to Middle Eastern equine life.

The Higher Organizing Committee was composed by: Mr. Ziad Abdullah Galadari, Chairman; Mr. Sultan Mohammed Khalifa, Board Member; Mr. Essam Abdalla al Hameeri, Board Member; Mr. Abdulrahman Obaid Belshawareb, Board Member; Mr. Mohammed Al Tawheedi, Board Member. General Secretary, Mr. Qusai Obaidalla.

As many as ten judges were called to manage a competition that appeared compelling just by reading the program. They were, in order: Mr. Cedes Bakker (Netherlands); Mr. Graham Smith (Australia); Mr. Francesco Santoro (Italy); Mr. Richard Pihlstrom (France); Mr. Ferdinand Huemer (Austria); Mrs. Irina Stigler (Russia); Mrs. Martine Van Hee (Belgium); Mrs. Michaela Weidner (Germany); Mr. Greg Gallun (United States) and Mr. Luiz Rocco (Brazil). Members of the Disciplinary Commission were: Dr. Sujeet Bhaskar Suryawanshi (United Arab Emirates); Dr. Abdel Wahab ben Ali Amira (United Arab Emirates); Mr. Kais Ben Hadi Quelhazi (United Arab Emirates); Dr. Umer Raza Gill (United Arab Emirates) and Mr. Jean Marc Dubois (France).

The Ring-master appointed for this 16th edition was Mr. Jean-Bernard Kupaj (France). Appointed speakers were: Ms. Amna Suroor and Mr. Abdulla Rashid both from the United Arab Emirates. The Final Championships took place on Saturday at 3:00 pm. From the Royal gallery and the guest stands, the view of the horses was amazing. The final results are given below.

CONCLUSION The 16th Dubai International Arabian Horse Championship was very much one of high quality with some amazing horses being presented for judging. We thank the Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and Sheikh Hamdan, for their on-going support and patronage of the Dubai International Arabian Horse Championship & Fair.

The Organization and hospitality during the show was very much appreciated also by us on AHM Team, by judges and show officials alike.

Special thanks to Christiane Chazel and Dominik Briot in this regard. Heartfelt thank you also to the official show photographers Mr. Morhaf Assaf and Wr. Pawloski, and to our collaborator Antonio De Martino who took the pictures for us. Everyone had fun and we think we all loved the experience of sharing this time together and most importantly the thrill of celebrating world class horses. The appointment is renewed for next year 2020 with other super star champions!

Horse Championship – Champion Yearling Fillies. Next, the bay D Fareedah (2018) (Fa El Rasheem x DF Faaiqs Farida). After her, it was the turn of the bay D Shu’Alah (2018) (Fa El Rasheem x FT Shaella); she was Silver Champion at Ajman 2019- Yearling Fillies Championship.

With the foals safely back in the stables, it was time for another section of wonderful young fillies from different top producing mares. This second part of the presentation started with the bay D Layrat (2017) (Fa El Rasheem x Lumiar Bint Balzac) followed by the grey D Ghaliah (2017) (Fa El Rasheem x D Aghadir) and the grey D Rannanah (2017) a champion daughter of D Khattaf (2013) (Royal Colours × D Jowan) and out of the aristocratic mare Jumilla (2007) (Thee Apprentice by Versace x Artemis by Borneo). At her young age, D Rannanah boasts a show- record to relish as she was Gold Champion at Ajman 2018 –Yearling Fillies Championship; Bronze Champion at Menton 2018 – Yearling Fillies Championship; Silver Champion at Elran Cup 2018- Champion Yearling Fillies; Silver Champion at Chantilly 2018 – AHO World Cup – Yearling Fillies Championship and, early this year, she was 1st at Sharjah Internationl 2019 – Fillies 2 Years Old. D Rannanah is a great example of Dubai Arabian Horse Stud breeding programme and it will be interesting to watch her progress. As a special guest-horse, there came an International champion filly coming

from the United States, the beautiful Exxaltress (2016)(Excalibur EA x Vesperra) bred and owned by Orrion Farms. In cooperation with Dubai Stud, Exxaltress competed in the 2019 Dubai International Championship last March. This supergirl is now in Europe and, always under the supervision of Dubai Stud, she will be contending in major competitions across the Old Continent.

With most of the breeding programme to date looked at, it was now time for the presentation of some of the most remarkable broodmares at Dubai Stud.

The six-years-old mare Elle Flamenca (2013) (Ajman Moniscione x Allamara MA), offered us a stunning performance of beauty and class. This precious dam has a proven track record in enhancing this breeding programme. The presentation went on with the mare D Afaf (2013) (Frasera Mashar x Esa Arieanna Express). She was Gold Champion at Straight Egyptian Event and UAE Bred - where she was also nominated Best Straight Egyptian of 2014 in the Yearling Fillies category, followed by the mare D Nawal (2012) (Royal Colours x D Noor) that was Silver Champion at Ajman 2017 - Mares Championship and Silver Champion at Wels 2016 - International Senior Mares Championship. Right after her, the mare AV Dohassai (2007) (Massai IBN Marenga x AV Dolimha).

lian Nationals - Mares Championship; Bronze Champion at Milan 2017 - Mares Championship - and Bronze Champion at Bergamo 2016 - Senior Mares Championship.

A nice group of colts followed in the arena. Our attention was caught by the showy attitude and nice trotting of the grey yearling colt D Meftah (2018) (FA El Rasheem x D Shahla) and the bay colt D Shuja’a (2016 ) (Gazal Al Shaqab X Ft Shaella). When young stallion D Seraj (2015) (FA EL Rasheem x Ladi Veronika) entered the presentation area at the same cadenced pace of his sire FA El Raheem our hearts just went out to them! It was a special thrill for us to see this father-son team performing in the same arena. In the past few years, D Seraj ¬ has certainly done very well in putting the Dubai Stud name on the map, collecting striking victories across Europe and the Middle East. He was: Gold Champion at Paris 2018 - Junior Colts Championship; Silver Champion at Dubai 2018 - Junior Colts Championship; Gold Champion at Paris 2016 - Yearling Colts Championship; Gold Champion at Menton 2016 - Yearling Colts Championship; Gold

Champion at Dubai 2016 - Yearling Colts Championship and Gold Champion at Ajman 2016 - Yearling Colts Championship, and he is also now proving his worth as a sire. The final part of the presentation featured in two ‘giants’ of the breed. First to step into the presentation area was legendary QR Marc (2005) (Marwan Al Shaqab x Swete Dreams) under he lead of handler Paolo Capecci, followed by the now sixteen-years old World Platinum Royal Colours (2003) (True Colours x Xtreme). Still a force to be reckoned with, Royal Colours blew us with an exhilarating ‘mini-show’ by sparing no charm to flatter the public.

After lunch, we could share our emotions and thoughts with all the members of the Dubai Stud team. After this lovely break, we took a look inside of the Stables, which was an ‘outing’ by itself. There is simply one single place in the world where you can see all these extraordinary Arabian horses at once. This place is called Dubai Arabian Horse Stud. And we all look forward to seeing which surprise Dubai Stud will have for us in 2020!

LaMelo Ball once said that “history is dependent on the new generation to write a new chapter.” The rich and pure ancestral history of the beloved Arabian horse has been preserved and carried forth by breeders around the world. From the treasured broodmares to those that only gave birth to one superstar foal, and from the stallions that gave rise to a global empire to the ones that created a dynasty in their own ‘backyards’, each of these horses have worked together to continually lay a foundation for the new generation. A generation that now needs to take centre stage and bring their existence to light in the industry.

n this series, we would like to introduce young, up and coming stallions from around the world that have the potential to become super sires and ultimately add a new dynamic to your breeding program. The first stallion hails all the way from the beautiful, picturesque Spanish island, Mallorca and his name is BV Unik.

BV Unik (Shanghai EA x Flavia) is a breathtakingly beautiful, five year old, grey stallion that was bred and is owned by Bautista Vich Stud.

The family have been breeding and loving the Arabian horse since 1991. They have been one

he second stallion that we would like to introduce in our new series entitled “The New Generation Comes Forth” is a brilliant bay, two-year-old colt that was born and bred in the historic South American country, Uruguay. Haash OSB was bred and is owned by Olivia Strauch. Olivia is the farm manager of the coveted Estancia Las Rosas in Uruguay.

Haash OSB (Dominic M x Partyssima OS) was leased by the esteemed breeder and knowledgeable judge, Chirstine Jamar of the world famous Jadem Arabians and is currently residing at her farm in Belgium. There are multiple factors as to why Christine chose this young colt to stand at her predominantly Polish Arabian farm but of the most important is his

National Champion, DA Valentino, who brings with him another cross to Versace.

Rosa La Valentina’s dam, Van El Rose is a

phenomenal pedigree.

Haash OSB is sired by the uber-gorgeous Brazilian National Champion as well as sire of Brazilian National and International Champions, Dominic M (Da Vinici FM x Rosa La Valentina).

Dominic M’s pedigree is a glorious combination of the who’s who in the Arabian industry.

His sire, Da Vinci FM is a two-time U.S. National Reserve Champion Stallion as well as a direct son of the legendary Versace.

Dominic M’s dam, Rosa La Valentina, is sired by the industry icon and six-time U.S.

Reserve Brazilian National Champion and a direct daughter Ryad El Jamaal.

Haash OSB’s dam, Pastyssima OSB (Sir Fames HBV x Party El Jamaal), was also bred by Olivia and she is a combination of two of Brazil’s most superlative breeding programs, Haras Boa Vista and Haras Meia Lua. Her sire, Sir Fames HBV is a Brazilian Reserve National Champion and it is through his sire that we find a third (the other two coming from the double Versace in Dominic M) and final cross to the U.S. National Champion Stallion, Fame VF. Even though quite far back in his pedigree, the presence of U.S. National Champions Ali Jamaal, Ruminaja Ali, Almaden, Padrons Psyche and Muscat have all placed Haash OSB in a prime position to take command over

show rings, but more importantly, breeding barns around the world.

It was at the 2019 Tulip Cup, held in Holland, that Haash OSB made his first live appearance in Europe. Crowds were intrigued by what they saw and the masses began to gather. Head trainer and handler at Jadem Arabians, Frederik Van Sas says the following about Haash OSB: “Haash OSB has a great, correct body and topline. His face is short and his eyes are well placed and very beautiful, it is actually very hard to find such, huge black eyes in our industry today. He is also a great mover and I’m sure he will be able to pass on that charisma to his foals. Overall, he is a stallion with new blood who has a lot to offer to breeders.”

In an industry where mainstream has become the norm, new blood and new potential will always be welcomed with open arms. Haash OSB has everything it takes to charter a new path for breeders and Christine says it perfectly: “I think he can offer breeders in Europe and worldwide a different pedigree with blood that is not often used. nce we got to the ‘Parco della Favorita’ we were warmly welcomed by Antonio Culcasi as the official organizer of the 10th annual edition of the Palermo Arabian Horses Cup. We also met the incredible New Monte Erice Equestrian team. Then, we walked across this huge property that stretches for almost 400 hectares at the foot of the Pellegrino Mountain. Inside of the park, we visited the Palazzina Cinese, an exotic-style house of hunting of King Ferdinando IV of Borbons, and the eighteenth-century Villa Valguarnera di Niscemi, headquarters of current Mayor of Palermo, Leoluca Orlando who was there as the official sponsor of the event together with Salvatore Orlando, President of the Palermo Municipal Council. Saturday 6th April, the show began in the steeplechase field named ‘Giuseppe Di Matteo’ inside of the Park.

na volta arrivati al ‘Parco della Favorita’ siamo stati calorosamente accolti da Antonio Culcasi, organizzatore ufficiale della Palermo Arabian Horses Cup, giunta quest’anno alla sua X edizione. Con lui c’era l’incredibile Nuovo Centro Equestre Monte Erice. Siamo così andati alla scoperta di questa spettacolare proprietà che si estende per quasi 400 ettari di terreno alle falde del ‘Monte Pellegrino’. All’interno del parco, abbiamo visitato la Palazzina Cinese, una residenza di caccia in stile esotico del Re Ferdinando IV di Borbone, e la settecentesca Villa Valguarnera di Niscemi, oggi sede legale del Sindaco di Palermo Leoluca Orlando, Sponsor ufficiale della manifestazione insieme al Presidente del Consiglio Comunale di Palermo, Salvatore Orlando. A wonderful spring appointment thoroughly devoted to the immortality of the Arabian horse. The beauty, elegance, stamina and irresistible charisma of this creature so close to our hearts were celebrated in Palermo, at ‘Parco Della Favorita’, in a breathtaking landscape which only could be worth a show like this. And that, it could only be born - and made possible - thanks to the joint effort and extensive mobilization of institutions and people. Un meraviglioso weekend di primavera dedicato interamente all’immortalità del cavallo arabo.

La bellezza, l’eleganza, la potenza e il carisma irresistibile di questa ‘creatura’ così vicina ai nostri cuori sono stati celebrati lì, a Palermo, al ‘Parco della Favorita’, in un paesaggio naturale mozzafiato, degna cornice di uno spettacolo di tale portata. E, che, soltanto, poteva nascere – ed è stato reso possibile - grazie allo sforzo congiunto e al coinvolgimento capillare di istituzioni e persone. Eccezionale il lavoro svolto da tutti.

“Judging horse shows is very different than showing and while all judges should have extensive showing background, judging is a totally different skill that requires its own kind of preparation beyond that of showing a horse.”

Hello Rashid, to set the scene with our readers, give us some background to you and your family please.

My name is Rashid Al Ali. I am 44 years old, I am married and I have four children. Mine is a relatively small family as Emirati families have usually more kids. We still have a three- generation family in my house though. I consider myself as being a small breeder who has a limited number of mares which I have chosen very carefully. I am proud to be a small breeder since, from my humble point of view, a small breeder is more focused on selecting the right stallions for their mares as they better now their mares. I’m not exaggerating if I say that I know every single trait of each mare on my farm, their habits of eating, or even if one of them is happy, depressed and so on… A small breeder is always more focused and he or she can breed better horses.

As they say, ‘Small farmers can grow better potatoes’. I have borrowed this saying from my friend Ferdinand Huemer, a well-known breeder, judge, composer and businessman.

When did you start getting interested in the purebred Arabian horse?

It all began with watching a video of Gazal Al Shaqab. I went crazy about him and I was enchanted by the beauty of this creature. Ever since then, I got very curious about knowing everything about Arabian horses, starting from the minute I woke up to the minute I closed my eyes to sleep. Not only that, but also in my dreams and daydreams. Because of that passion, I became an author for Al Assalah Arabian Horse Magazine. I used to take care of a section called ‘Story of horses’, focusing on different stallions and bloodlines to let the readers know their history and the best traits that they added to the mares.

Who was the first Arabian horse you laid your eyes on? What are your favorite bloodlines?

In modern Arabian horses shows, no one can deny the fact that Gazal Al Shaqab has a great influence on the breed as a whole and I would raise my hat to the Polish State Studs which utilize him in the best way.

Moving on to my favorite bloodlines, I’m always honest with myself and hate to be biased towards certain bloodlines or certain stallions as I believe in the good quality of Arabian horses no matter what. I love Egyptian horse refinement, Polish horse movement and

charisma, and Russian horse conformation and I love the horses that represent the best features of each bloodline.

Yet, I’m obsessed with certain horses that I believe that having them in my herd of mares is of high importance such like Ali Jamaal, Bask and Gazal and there is one mare that I’m crazy about called The Vison HG. I have introduced her blood in my breeding program last season through one of her sons.

When did you become a judge? What specific preparation did you get?

I became a judge in 2015, I went through a written and practical exam and several judging sessions.

What do you feel has been your most rewarding experience as a judge?

Being a judge has given me a great opportunity to travel abroad and see different horses from different bloodlines as well as to note the influence of certain stallions which enhanced my experience as a breeder. One more beautiful thing of being a judge is getting to know different judges who have a broad experience as breeders, sitting with them and chatting about horses, pedigrees, bloodlines and having their thought about the methodology of breeding, their thought about blending breeds and finding out whether they are in favor or against inbreeding, linebreeding etc. I could spend a whole night talking about Arabian horses.

What horse or horses have you judged that have left the greatest impression on you?

Some horses just take your breath away once they enter the show ring. Any good quality horse just makes me feel happy and makes my day. I personally like to judge Mares Classes and I’m very obsessed with how feminine they are. The ones that I will never forget judging are D Shihannah (FA El Rasheem x D Shahla) and Toflah Al Zobair (SMA Magic One x Emozione Al Ventura). These are the kind of horses that stick in my memory and can’t be forgotten. I can’t wait to see them as adult mares.

What are, in your opinion, the strengths of the breed and how do you tackle the concepts of ‘beauty’ and ‘functional correctness’?

In the Arabian horse industry, we have different thoughts and different schools that have different arguments about this and the contradiction is infinite about it. The Arabian horse is first and foremost a riding horse hence, he must be functional above all; there can be no compromise on the conformation and functionality. After making sure that the horse is functional, we look at desirable traits of beauty like refinement and attitude.

I think that we should pay more attention to good bodies and good legs as the breed is in desperate need to out-breed soft bodies and bad legs.

that rebreed these traits through introducing a prize for the best legs and the best body of the show, not only the best head!

Which particular skills are necessary to become an accountable judge?

I believe that any judge must have certain qualities in order to be a good judge. First of all, a judge has to have a good eye to evaluate horses in a couple of minutes; a judge needs to practice judging a lot in order to have a good eye and he has to be gifted with that particular good eye as I know many old breeders who

cann o t evaluate their own horses. Secondly, a judge must know the horse parts and mechanism, the reasons behind each conformation quality like the mechanism behind good movement or why a good neck set is of great importance and so on.

Last but not least, a judge should come from one of the many riding disciplines as this helps him/her a lot in appreciating good horse conformation quality.

There are many Arabian breeders-owners that constantly point to the political nature of today’s shows. Do you feel it is a direct conflict of interest to allow show organizers to be also judges? If so,

do you believe that active show organizers should not be allowed to judge?

In any competition there is a winner and there is a looser. If you ask any looser you can hardly ever find someone who admits that there is a certain reason related to him that made him loose.

Yet, I’m not saying here that the horse show industry is 100% a fair game, but we as breeders should all focus more on how to develop the quality of our horses and bring them to shows in their best conditions, also making sure that we have the best handler who can take the best out of our horse.

And yes, active organizers shouldn’t be allowed to judge. At the end of the day, any horse owner knows the judges panel before the show, so if he is confident that there will be a conflict of interests in that show he can always withdraw his horse.

Rashid, you judged at ‘Forlì C International Show’ in September 2018. How did it go?

First of all, this was my first time in Italy and I was amazed by the beauty of the place. It was my first time to see those grapes fields on the way to Forlì. Another thing that really touched me was how friendly the people were and I enjoyed the hospitality of Italian people.

It was a great experience! Speaking about Forlì C International show, it was a very well organized one and I saw many good quality horses that I can still remember. The atmosphere was amazing along with other interesting activities that went on all along the show.

Do you feel with the politics and the high cost of showing in rated shows that many Arabian owners should consider Open Shows?

Do you see this as a viable alternative to promoting the versatility of the breed?

Unfortunately, the Arabian horse industry is not in its best conditions. As breeders and organizers, we should all think about alternative approaches to promote the breed. One of these approaches is considering Open Shows or introducing Arabian horses in riding classes in other disciplines.

There have been many complaints about trainers abusing horses. Some of them have also been punished for drugging a horse or for cosmetic alterations on necks, in addition to eye tattooing.

Do you feel these are isolated incidents or do you feel they may be more widespread?

So far, I haven’t come across any particular incident where the horse was severely abused. And if you compare horse shows with other horse competitions this is nothing.

Yet, any abuse must be punished and this is why there are Disciplinary Commissioners in any show and there have been cases where the horse was disqualified and\or some handlers had penalties.

If you were empowered to effect change in the Arabian World, how would you go about it?

The industry of Arabian horse has some pillars: breeders or owners, organizers and judges.

I will start with the judges. Judges should pay more attention to good bodies and legs and be more confident with scoring good legs and body higher while giving lower scores for bad legs. In so doing, breeders will gradually pay more attention to breed good quality horses.

Owners. They should have a good eye, they should study their horses more and their vision should be reflected on the horses.

A breeding program is a lifetime process, so each breeder should have his own breeding program that represents how he defines the best Arabian horse quality from his perspective. So, for example, if I would like to introduce better legs in my breeding program, I should add a stallion from X breeding program; or if I want to improve the movement in my breeding program, I should acquire a mare from Y breeding program. This is a crucial role that needs to be played by breeders.

Organizers. As they actually run the industry, they should pay more attention to certain qualities and introduce new prizes for legs and body to encourage the breeder to focus more on those traits, so to give them an idea of who are the best stallions that are strong in these areas.

Do you feel like leaving a message to the readers of this interview or to those who are willing to get to know you better?

The secret recipe for any success is passion.

Unless you are passionate, you will never breed a good horse, but you can always buy one! Thank you Arabian Horse Magazine for giving me this great opportunity.

A

shared deep love for the Arabian horse has often acted like a catalyst in the creation of ‘couples’ within the international Arabian horse community. A perfect example of this, it’s the couple formed by Mr. Manfred and Mrs. Heike Hain from Germany. They agreed to let me interview them and find out more about their relationship and never ending passion for Straight Egyptian Arabian horses…

Manfred and I met in 1993. I was 30 years old at the time and he was slightly older than me. Manfred wanted to marry me immediately, but we had to wait for another 7 years.

The most important requirements for a good and long-term relationship is, above all, the love

you have for one another, which includes mutual understanding and tolerance as well as faith in it.

Our love for horses began in childhood, but we first saw Arabian horses in the Zoological Garden in Rostock, Germany. Manfred was studying veterinary medicine there. These Arabian horses came from Polish lines and I was one of the riders. One day a very beautiful brown colt was born. I told Manfred about it and I could not believe it… a few months later I got the little one as a present for my birthday.

Well, who can say no?!We bought a young mare of the same age and let them grow up together in a friendly environment. In 1995 our son Christian was also born - what a luck!

In 1996 we looked for and restored an old farmhouse.

At that time, we had already visited some shows and

‘dreamt’ of a flea-bitten Arabian mare. There were 2 mares. Talia Halima (Ruminaja Ali x Charm of Halima) had won Manfred’s heart and we were able to purchase her at Arminta Farm. I fell in love with Montasar daughter Khediva Rodaniyah. So the first two Egyptian mares moved in with us. This was rather random; we had been looking for horses on many farms but these two mares were going to be the ones.

Few years later we were able to acquire Mathea M. from the famous Madheen strain and these 3 mares became the founding mares at ‘Amoun Egyptian Arabians’.

Starting a farm with all the daily work on it, then building your own family horse breeding, requires a lot of diligence and passion.

Everyone knows the ‘ups’ and ‘downs’ when living with horses. Every new born foal that is born healthy brings a lot of joy but unexpected problems may Amoun Jamilah, 5. generation always arise.

Mastering all this together with Manfred while enjoying the little things has strengthened our relationship. We can rely on each other and would never leave our family horses with no care.

In 2005, Manfred focused on shows for the first time. As a veterinarian, he was fascinated by the peculiarity of the Arabian horse and he always wanted to learn more about it. This works best with a large number of different horses, just like on the shows.

When judging at some events, Manfred stays away from the crowd, he only has eyes for the horses. If they are much too shaved or greased, he can get very annoyed.

Introducing horses to a show is primarily intended to introduce a particular horse, breeder or farm.

This is exactly the kind of approach adopted by the ‘Egyptian Event Europe’. Members of the “Pyramid Society Europe” e.V. are first and foremost devoted to preserve and lead Egyptian bloodlines within Arabian horse breeding as a whole. We want to be at our event to highlight the peculiarities of these bloodlines. The Egyptian Arabian horse is bred in Europe by families and he is being used by them as a riding horse or for breeding purposes. There is a special relationship between the two and, in many cases, a great value is placed on preserving the authenticity of the breed and its uniqueness.

We want to introduce these fantastic creatures, with their beauty and kindness, to friends and strangers, and infect them with our enthusiasm. We invite you all to come and visit this year’s “Egyptian Event Europe” on 10th and 11th August 2019 at “Schloss Löwenstein” near Frankfurt!

rossed by the ‘Naviglio Grande’, the Commune of Vermezzo is located at 119 meters above the sea level and 20 kilometers away from Milan.

In this quiet and picturesque location, breeders and members of the Arabian Horse international community gathered on the weekend between 27th28th April at the new equestrian facility - the MVR Pala Show Jumpers Asd. owned by Mrs. Barbara Morali & Company to participate in the ‘Milan International B - Arabian Horse Show’ 2019. The Contest was governed by the E.C.A.H.O. rules, it was affiliated with A.N.I.C.A. and hosted an international panel of six judges composed by: Pittaluga Marco (Italy); Schibler Renata (Switzerland); Nagham Aldabbous Sehaim (Kuwait); Philstrom Richard (France); Luiz Rocco (Brazil) and Gaber Medhat (Egypt). Members of the Disciplinary Committee were: Fazeli Farhang (Iran); Manerba Alberto (Italy) and Teobaldelli Gian Paolo (Italy). Impeccable in his role of Ringmaster: Ludi Ivo (Italy). Official speaker: Eric Blaak (The Netherlands). The music was played by Filippi Coccetta Gianluca (Italy). Also present at the show, the cameras of ArabianEssence that filmed the show via Livestream. The participating categories were all captivating. The Final Championships entertained the audience on the edge of their seat throughout the show until the best champions of each category were awarded. The final results are set out below.

FUTURITY CHAMPIONSHIP The Futurity Championship took place on Sunday morning, starting at 10.00am. As for the Female Category, first place on the podium was won by the little bay filly Sg Werena (Onassis Di Mar x Sg Wera) bred and owned by Groane Stables. As for the Males Category, first place was grabbed by the promising chestnut colt Spartacuss (Ajman Moniscione x Janeira) bred and owned by Nicoletta Bossalini.

CONCLUSION We will definitely remember them as two sensational days those we spent in Vermezzo, in the province of Milan, on the occasion of the third stop on the 2019 Italian Show Tour. Undisputed protagonists, our beloved Arabian horses many of whom managed to arouse the curiosity and a discreet interest of renowned breeders and experts in the sector. The feed-back from the participants was overall unanimous and very positive, therefore, this fourth edition passed with flying colors.

During a short interview, the event’s organizer, Claudio Mazza, said: “This year we have worked even harder than last year, and in different possible ways, so to ensure that

CONLUSIONE Le ricorderemo senza dubbio come due giornate sensazionali quelle trascorse a Vermezzo, in provincia di Milano, in occasione della terza tappa dello Show Tour Italiano 2019. Protagonisti indiscutibili dell’evento di morfologia di Categoria B-Internazionale alcuni tra cavalli arabi più belli del momento, molti dei quali sono riusciti a suscitare la curiosità e un discreto interesse di rinomati allevatori ed esperti del settore. Il feedback dei partecipanti nel complesso è stato unanime e molto positivo, dunque, questa quarta edizione, è stata promossa a pieni voti. Durante una breve intervista, l’organizzatore dell’evento, Claudio Mazza, ha dichiarato: “Quest’anno abbiamo lavorato ancora più sodo dell’anno scorso, e in diversi modi possibili, al

Horse training is a tough profession for a man or a woman. But Sandro Pinha, one of top-class Arabian horse trainers from Brazil is undaunted. His love for horses is always overwhelming. He decided to spend 24 hours with the most elegant of animals in the world, the Arabian Horse.

Sandro now lives in Arizona, he trains and looks after many horses belonging to various owners.

Sandro, to set the scene for our readers, who are you? How did this passion you have for the Purebred Arabian horse begin? And to what extent has this love you have acquired for the Arabian horse affected your life?

I guess the answer to this question depends on who you are asking it, but you are asking me. I am still the same little boy in love with horses that is still extremely excited to get up every morning and go to the barn. I was fortunate enough to grow up with Arabian horses at Haras Capim Fino in Brazil, one of the best breeders of Arabian horses in that country.

Besides yourself, is there anyone else in your family that loves horses? Or are you the only ‘case of Arabitis ‘in this respect?

Yes, my father used to train and show horses when I was growing up. I guess it runs in the family.

Have you got your own Training Centre? If so, how did it all start? What was your main thought behind it and what made you believe it was going to be a successful Training Centre?

Yes, I have. My partner Gil Valdez and I own Arabians International in Scottsdale, AZ. When I first moved to America I had the pleasure of working for several years with a couple of great farms. Then I felt like it was time for me to start my own training centre and create my own identity and style.

Who was your mentor in this project?

I have several great people that supported me

from the beginning.

What’s your daily routine at the Training Centre?

I don’t have a daily routine. Every day is something different from lunging horses, schooling horses, cleaning and pulling weeds. We do everything together. My least favourite thing…office work.

What do the words ‘training/handling’ mean to you?

Training is the day to day basic work getting the horse ready for a competition. A handler can just be someone that merely catches the lead of the horse at shows.

Is there any particular symbiosis between a trainer/handler and his horses?

Absolutely, no one knows his horse better than his trainer.

Of all the horses you have been training, which is the one you had to bear a greater commitment with? All of them.

Who/What got you into morphology competitions? Do you remember your first show?

Is there any victory you feel particular close to?

As I grew up I always admired a great halter horse. My dream was to become a trainer/handler.

Do the most deserving horses in terms of today’s standards really win?

Yes, I truly believe that most times the best horse wins.

What differences can you spot

between today’s Arabian horses and those in the past?

The quality of the horses bred around the world today has raised the bar and continues to do so.

How important are the Fairs of Arabian horses?

It is extremely important that we need to continue to educate our breeders and newcomers in the horse business.

What advice would you give to those who want to become a handler of Arabian horses?

The best advice I can give them is to never lose focus of your passion and respect for the horses. Winning a trophy is not everything.

What are your future plans?

Continue to live the dream.

Renato Sorvillo, Stewart Vesty, Christiane Slawik, Edyta Troyanska, Sylwya Ilenda and Henrike Hormann’s photographic research gravitates towards the Arabian horse, a dimension in which the horse does not only appear as a noble creature, as a bearer of shared cultural values and meanings; but in the relationship between his being physical, his action and his spiritual dimension.

Photography is the tool they can better control to bring to light the inner dimension of the Arabian horse. It does not replicate reality but produces new knowledge. In this process they are only a means, they try to minimize or even cancel their presence as much as possible, because they know that their judgment is limited when compared to any form of artistic expression.

Mares and foals would regularly gather to drink, but in the 19 years I travelled there, they never were as perfectly beautiful as these four grey mares from Michałów. I titled the image ‘Sisters’ and it will always be one of my favorites.”

Successful photographers often become idols of new generations. It’s always interesting to see them in life, to take a glance behind the scenes, and hear their unique stories on how they got into photography. That’s the aim of the interview with photographer Hamid Shokouhi specialist in Arabian horses.

Iran, Ardabil. My home town is nearby Azerbaijan country and we speak Azeri, not Farsi. I’ve been married for 4 years and I don’t have any kid for now. I have two brothers and I’m the oldest one. My younger brother is a physician, and the youngest one is in the army now. I studied English Literature at University, and I’ve been teaching English for about 10 years.

Who is Hamid Shokouhi? Tell us about yourself, where you are from and your family.

My real name is Mousarreza Shokouhi and Hamid is my nick name. I’m 30 years old. Married and I live in north west of

Can you talk a little about your formative years as a photographer? Have you been trained, and if so from what institution? Or are you self taught?

I started to photograph four years ago when I got married. My father gave me a

camera “Nikon D5300” as a wedding gift. I got really thrilled and shocked by that. I didn’t know anything about camera and taking photos. What is ISO? What is Speed shutter? Nothing! I started to learn through YouTube which is blocked in my country… I haven’t participated in any photography classes. I am a self-taught. For two years I have been photographing anything like nature, birds, portraits, weddings and so on.

Two years ago, my uncle called me and asked if I’m interested to photograph his Kurdish bred horse in a local horse show in my hometown.

This show changed my life! And I started to photograph horses. We have a lot of horse shows in different breeds and at the beginning I started to communicate with the organizers of the show, and I managed to photograph in National Horse shows. Horses have covered layer by layer of my

life. Step by step, horse owners got to know me and I eventually became one of the Equestrian Federation of Iran’s photographers. I tried really hard, and I keep trying harder than before. If you let me do it, I can talk for hours about my passion for horses and horse photography.

Is there someone special who has encouraged your work as a photographer? If yes tell us about this person and how they have influenced your career path?

I know a lot of good horse photographers in the world and I love the work of all of them. But three people in particular have blown my mind. First, Stuart Vesty.

His style is magnificent. He really knows what comes through Arabian horses. The second one is Hussain

Taskin. A Turkish photographer. He combines the essence of feeling with horse and nature and the last one is Katarzyna Okrzesic. She is takes photos of any horse breeds. And her job, I can say, is ineffable.

What is your favorite brand of Camera and why?

My favorite brand of camera is what I’m using. I have Canon 5D mark iv. And I love it. If I can buy any other high brands they will be my favorite, then. Lol. I love what I have, and this is the important thing I guess.

What is your favorite subject to photograph? Why? Horses. Any kinds and breeds of horses! I love them, I adore them. All of them are beautiful and they talk to me through their eyes. But my most favorite one is

How would you describe your photography style?

I like to combine art, nature, architecture, history and horse together. To find a reasonable conclusion. And maybe a masterpiece.

When you travel, what do you take with you?

My Camera and my old Laptop come first.

Which is your favorite ‘Arabian’ destination to travel to?

For Arabian horse photography, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, Brazil, USA, and absolutely European countries.

What is one cool fact you can tell us about yourself?

I started last year to photograph Arabian horses, and now the most famous Arabian horse magazine is interviewing me now! Isn’t it cool? Lol. But it won’t make me to be arrogant for sure. I try my best to be well known in the world for a short time. You have my word.

Do you have any upcoming exhibitions or collaborations?

I’d really like to have. Especially in foreign countries so to show my own country’s horses, Asil breeds, ArabianPersian breed. Now I’m concentrating on my work and I hope to have good pictures to show.

What are your hopes and dreams or future goals, where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?

I like to think of myself as one of the three best Arabian horse photographers in the world. I have faith in my efforts. Inshaallah!

Hello Tonya. Just to set the scene with our readers, will you please give me some background to you, your family and education?

I grew up in the small town of Richmond, Kansas. I fell in love with horses at a young age and spent most of my summers at horse camps riding. Riding is where I found my passion for fashion. I started designing show shirts for myself.

I gained my formal experience at Stephen’s College in Columbia, MO. I graduated with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Fashion Design and Product Development. My collection RideLikeAGirl was presented in front of a panel of judges and my professors at Stephens College, and I was presented the award for Best Collection: Most Marketable.

My design inspiration comes from my lifestyle. As an avid Outdoors Woman, formally trained Equestrian, and adventurous traveller, I bring my passion for those things to my designs.

What sparked your interest in fashion?

I’ve always been creative. I learned how to sew at a young age making my own clothing to be different from others. My first fashion show is what really sparked my interest for fashion. I loved showing off my collection and having people love it as much as I did and asking to buy my clothing.

When was Nokota.Style created? What was the main thought behind it?

Nokota.Style was founded in 2015 My brand Nokota, is portrayed in my logo which is a digitized format of my original hand painted horse. Nokota is a bold and free to roam. The circle that encompasses her is representative of a clock. She is running free of time and physical restraint. I designed the brand logo during my time at Stephens College.

My main thought behind Nokota is to make ready to wear clothing that women love. My garments are tailored to fit any size and custom made to order to make women full empowered and love what they are wearing.

How would you define your fashion style?

The best designs come from a life well-lived. My fashion interest reflects my love of riding horses and travel. I’m inspired by the Western lifestyle and the feel of being a free spirited gypsy soul. I have always created one-of-akind items for personal use, because most of what I see in my mind I am not able to find in the world of current fashion.

How has your work evolved since you began your own label?

Each year I set goals for my brand. I’ve been traveling more to show off my designs. I also have more than one label under my brand now. Nokota.Style is a designer price point for more of my fancy garments/ runway pieces.

Then I have my ready to wear collection called Nokota. This collection is more affordable price point and pieces that mix and match well to wear for every day.

Have your outfits become more appealing to people as a result?

Each fashion show I do, I get a more of a following and people know or have heard of my brand. More people are buying my garments and I see them tagging me on social media, which is always an amazing feeling. I love being able to meet new people and making new connections.

Are there any types of clothing that you like/avoid wearing in particular?

I like to keep my design creative open. I thought I would never do men’s wear but just recently I sketched up some men’s designs and going to be adding to the next collection. The same went for Children’s wear but I just finished my collection for the children’s line and it was a great turn out. As I have mentioned before, I like to keep my creative window open, but I never see my brand designing active wear, as I don’t feel active wear would fit into my designs for image I want for my brand.

How is your work received internationally?

This is one of my goals I’m working on. I would to see it go internationally soon. I have a following on social media and that’s so far is how people are able to see my designs.

How do influences from outside of Kansas find their way into your work?

I started traveling more for fashion shows to show off my designs. Traveling is a big part of my designs as well, I’m inspired by different city’s/ states/ country’s. I’m always designing new collections and promoting myself to get my name out more and more each day. Facebook and Instagram are my way to promoting my brand.

What are you fascinated by at the moment and how does it feed into your work?

I love working with leather because no piece is the same. Each garment comes out different having its own why of style. My favorite trim is fringe. I cut my own fringe out of leather and design jackets/ pants/shorts with fringe detail. Fringe is such a fun detail as it has so much movement for a garment. I make leather fringe belts, which is a fun statement piece and a big seller for Nokota. I took leather design classes in college and found my interest and stuck with it for my theme through my brand Nokota.

What is the biggest lesson that you have learned since you started your company?

The biggest lesson I have learned is making sure I have enough garments ready to sell a day of the show, people like to buy right away from a show, they want the piece to go home with them. Also having a strong running website is key to good sales.

What advice would you give to young fashion designers? You can never start

designing early enough. Each show I do, I come up with more ideas and more details for pieces. Start sketch and designing early.

What would you like to achieve before the end of the year?

My dream is to start a boutique on wheels, so get a vintage trailer and travel with my designs ready to sell. I’m saving up for a trailer now and going to demo it to my style.

Are you superstitious or do you have any rules you live by?

No, I am not really. I do believe everything happens for a reason and good luck does come if you work towards your dreams. Hard work plays off.

Yes, I believe one has to run free to truly find oneself. This doesn’t mean you have to be lost but you need to explore and experience what life has for us.

Who is Weronika Bolchajmer? Please tell us about yourself, where you are from and your family.

I am of Polish origin and was born in Warsaw, the capital city of Poland. My grandmother’s family tree traces back to the aristocratic line of Pawlowicz family, who owned horses for many years. My great grandparents and grandparents were artists and scientists: my grandfather was professor of Agricultural Sciences, he was a man of merit. Nature and beauty is in our blood. I really am happy and proud to have such roots, to live in Poland, a beautiful land inhabited by very friendly people, with delicious food and many historic places. We have everything one needs to live a good life: untouched nature, clean water, mountains and lakes, woods and seaside. I spent my early childhood growing up in a strong, supportive family, riding horses all summer and skiing in the winter. Once I finished school, travelling became my passion.

I have seen many amazing places and discovered in each country something exceptional and special. Travelling is what makes me feel alive, because I cannot stand still. I love to breathe the air of different places.

How and when were you discovered as a model?

Did you always want to pursue modelling?

It’s funny, as modelling seems to have been my destiny since my early childhood. I got my first job at the age of 5 or 6. I remember it very well, as it was a photoshoot for school products. Further along, in primary school, I had some other accidental offers for sessions for commercials, and from beauty contests.

I was still very young and I did not have an official parent model agency.

At 17 years of age, I was approached on the street by the owner of one of the best agencies in Poland. She saw me in the city centre while I was waiting for a bus with my friends and she gave me her card.

My family was against my working professionally as a model.

They had always put premium on education. I studied in private schools. I pursued Culture Studies and I studied in the Academy of Fine Arts. Finally, I was awarded a degree in Economy.

After some time, during a fashion event, I again received an offer from another face-hunter. I was 20 years old. I decided to sign a contract with the agency. Firstly, modelling was just an idea of work to get some pocket money, but very quickly it turned into my passion.

My life started to be very busy. I became a mother and always had other duties, so I could not travel for longer modelling contracts. Anyhow, modelling was always beside me. Of course, being a model is a state of mind, living a healthy lifestyle and doing the everyday routine to take care about yourself in the special way required in the fashion world.

That is why I always try to do my best, to be prepared, so that whenever my phone rings with a new offer, I am ready to take on a new job!

If you had to say–what three things make a great model?

In my opinion, in order to be a great model you need to be self-confident and know your value. Each time you go to a casting, you hear so many comments and judgments about your looks and appearance that sometimes it may hurt - especially when you are a sensitive person. You just need to remember who you are and feel good in your body and take care of yourself in a holistic way. You work with your body, but you must remember that your mind and the way you think and feel is very important - and it shows. This is what makes you glow from the inside. Never compare yourself with others, because you need to be unique. It’s a tough

business with a lot of competition, so you need to be strong-minded and fully focused on your tasks. The second important thing, in my opinion, are communication skills and being flexible, quick-thinking, always giving 100 %. Intelligence and being smart helps a lot. Sometimes it’s a harsh work, although it may seem to be easy. In my opinion, a positive mind-set and the faith in your abilities is the third most important factor. I believe that you become what you think of yourself.

What have been your favourite experiences modelling so far?

I have many great memories.

I loved to do fashion shows, because there was always some adrenaline in it. I usually opened or closed the show, which was very exciting for me. I have more fantastic memories from my travel to Moscow. I made a TV commercial in Russia together with my daughter. I went for a trip with my 10-month old baby, which was quite a wild and amazing experience. People were so friendly, and the city impressive.

I felt so small, as if I drowned in the concrete jungle, surrounded by all the wide streets and communist buildings. Another memorable moment was from a photo session in Spain.

We were shooting in the Spanish island, Tenerife. It is a marvellous place with beautiful

Are there any designers that you really like to wear? How would you describe your style?

My style is very casual. As an everyday outfit, I wear ripped jeans and sweaters or T-shirts. Comfort is very important to me.

My favourite colours are black and white.

In my opinion, the key to looking really classy and elegant is following the principle of “less is more”. I love simplicity.

I put a lot of weight on details and quality. For me, the most important elements of great fashion are high quality fabrics and a good cut.

Jewellery, shoes and bags make the outfit. I love Italian fashion designers.

landscapes and magical views. The work was a lot of fun and full or adventures. Once, our shooting team, while searching for great venues for the setting, broke in to a banana plantation.

Another time, on the last day of the shoot, we were looking for a location and found a beautiful house. It was a private place, and seemed to be abandoned, but it was not. When we started to work, we suddenly got attacked by the owner of this house, who was inside. He came out with a huge dog. They both looked very dangerous. We started explaining and apologizing, but would not to listen. We had to run away and I got injured. It was really like in a movie and such adventures you will remember all your life.

What do you like to do when you’re not modelling in your time off ?

There are many things I love to do in my spare time. I love nature and animals, I love to paint, read books, practice sports, go to the gym and sauna, visit art galleries and museums, go to parks for a walk with my dog, meet friends and spend time with my daughter. It is a very long list and it fills my day. Apart from these activities, there is one more that also occupies a lot of time in my life. It is my Instagram blog, Veronikalexandra. It is also part of my work and part of the modelling job. Nowadays, being a model requires having an account on Instagram. Much pressure is put on it, so I have started to run an account as well. It brings me many opportunities to cooperate with brands, photographers etc.

Actually, it consumes a lot of time and attention on my part, but I enjoy it very much.

Between modelling and Arabian horses‌ Tell us when you first met an Arabian horse and how you felt about it.

Horses have been present in my life since I was a little girl, around 4 years old.

It was in the summertime, we were on holidays and I saw a riding school. I asked my mom if I could go for a lesson. Since that time I craved for horses. I hooked all my family into riding, so they started to do it as well. My mother still does dressage. I always spent my childhood summers in horse-riding camps.

My routine was riding twice a week for many years. Once I had a serious accident, when I fell from a horse so hard that I had to spent the whole summer holidays in a hospital because of this severe injury.

However, it did not stop me from continuing riding. My dream was to own a horse.

A few years later, I met my partner who introduced me to the Arabian horse world.

I fell in love with him and with Arabian horses. I think they are amazing, mystical and beautiful animals with a long history and traditions. I feel a special bond with horses. They are strong and fragile, sensitive and savage at the same time. They are definitely my favourite animals.

Do you own Arabian horses yourself? What kind of relationship do you have with horses?

I find my bond with horses very strong and special. This is the love which started when I was a little girl. I have read all the books and encyclopaedias about horses.

I used to paint pictures of horses and I knew the anatomy of a horse body, the names of the bones, muscles, etc. I simply love everything about horses, even the way they smell.

My biggest dream at that time was to own a horse. When I got pregnant I got my first Arabian horse. I was very happy that my first horse was of the Arabian breed.

She was very quiet and kind character and everyone liked her. Me and my horse were expecting a baby so it bonded us even more. In my opinion horses are very intelligent and intuitive animals. I believe that you can communicate with them on a different level, that they can read your feelings and maybe even thoughts. They are a big part of my life and I really appreciate it.

Have you ever been to Arabian horses beauty competitions? If so, tell us which International Arabian Horses Show is your favourite one. (Pride of Poland, Menton, Dubai?)

I have been travelling to many Arabian horses beauty competitions in Europe and the Middle East for many years.

I attended many shows in the UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah), Egypt, Kuwait, Iran, Qatar, France (Paris, Menton, Chantilly) and Austria (Wels) and many other places.

It is hard to choose one, because each event has something extraordinary and unique to it. Menton is an amazing event, certainly because of the location, just on the Cote d’Azur and the show is almost on the beach. I don’t have to explain how beautiful and picturesque this region is. It is so close to Monte Carlo, where the atmosphere is unmatched.

Also Paris is one of my favourite shows, because I love AHM | 234

this city. The presentation is made with big splendour, always taking place around December, so the city is nicely decorated with Christmas lights, you can eat marrons in the street, or go shopping. Definitely, it has its special charm. The Pride of Poland is a National Championship and a great horse auction in the historic place of Janow Podlaski, one of the oldest Arabian Horse farms around the world. The event takes place in the summertime, located not on the seaside or in another famous city. It is located in a remote, less popular region, in the East of Poland, but this has its own flair and taste. There is no distraction and everyone is focused on the horses, in a very good mood, excited about the auction, waiting 3 days for who will make a bid, etc. There are people from all over the world, from so many countries, gathering especially for this event. I witnessed the moment when Pepita was sold for the record amount. It was exciting like a race and

a show together. Therefore, I think the Pride of Poland is my favourite event.

Lastly, what’s something you want less of in your life?

What about more of….?

Life can be complicated sometimes. In its worse part, it is stressful and difficult. We are now living in the world full of evil, injustice, stress, rush, greed, envy, fear, false relations, hunger, suffering… I would like to have it less in my life and in our world. I have learned from my experience to make my circle of friends very small and to make a selection of people who I let in, the things which I listen to, or read or watch.

We are in this world just for a while. If only we realized that all of us should live in a different way and enjoy the life, we would be happier. There is nothing better you can do. I think I am a very lucky person and that I’ve got

everything I need and wish - love, family, friends, horses, passion. I am very grateful for the life I have. The only things I would like to have more are time and health! The time to fulfil all my dreams, to travel more and to help others. My big dream is to go to South American countries and visit Mexico. Since my childhood I have been waiting for the moment to fly there, explore the history, see the warm smiles of people living there. Also, I wish I would have more time to involve myself in projects and organizations which help the environment, people and children in need to make this world a better place. I hope one day I will reach my goal.

Among the most persistent themes of painting, the harem was often the source of erotic phantasies released by unknown countries, a theme widely exploited by Jean Leon Gerome.

The many artists we introduced here were all

fascinated by their traveling as it led them to countless and rich discoveries that later we could admire in their works.

These represent scenes of life in the neighboring countries depicting a human environment where horses played an important role according to a tradition that sometimes portrayed an Orient between reality and imagination.

In this first dossier on Oriental art in painting, there is a perhaps real attempt to offer graphic representations by the work of some famous artists, each with domestic scenes, landscapes, animals or other subjects. Although rooted in past centuries, oriental arts continue to fascinate us.

A

llan Banford is a Colombian born British artist known for his abstracts paintings and digital art series. We met at his studio in Happy Valley, Hong Kong where he combines technology and art. Allan describes himself as “creative on perpetual evolution.” In terms of influences, Allan creates from day by day life experiences and complex mental sketch visualizations of time and space although his natural talent is for painting and technology.

His first love was music, in fact, he just released a new album featuring a compilation of 40 tracks from his electronic productions “Allan Banford by Allan Banford.” As an artist, Allan always tries to find the visual impacts that make us feel something, balancing classical art practices and technology.

In terms of process, Allan doesn’t begin with traditional pen and paper sketches, he works the concepts directly on his favourite surface, wood panels from experiences decrypted with 3 colours; for his digital series Allan has created an algorithm that decodes single or group characters into mathematically perfect abstract artworks.

series. I’m the only artist from a family or lawyers and dentists. When I was very little I used to draw everywhere but when I realize that I could do that on canvas and keep it forever everything changed.

I literally painted on top of most of the paintings in my house, very abstract pieces of landscapes and flowers. I was doing it for fun just to understand how a painting could express different feelings.

Some of them got better with my additions and everything was fine until I painted on top of my mum’s graduation portrait and that was the end of that experiment.

Can you talk a little about your formative years as an artist? Have you been trained, and if so from what institution?

Or are you self taught?

I was very keen on Photoshop and Illustrator before I went to study advertising but the fact that I was learning from books and ideologies of other people didn’t satisfy my expectations so I decided to learn how to write and produce “Music” to be able to give a voice to my creativity. It was great to manage to create my first song and even more to be signed by one of the best Independent Record Labels at the time. The music gave me the foundation to understand how to materialize what it was going through my head. After a few years producing and playing music around the world, I decided to go back to my roots to rediscover

painting. I have a Master of Fine Arts from the College of Art in Sussex and a Bachelor in Fine Arts from the West Sussex College of Art and Design, United Kingdom.

Is there someone special who has encouraged your work an artist, if yes tell us about this person and how they have influenced your path as an artist?

There is not a specific person who encouraged my work as an artist, it has been a constant transition for creative periods in my life. The evolution from music producer to art has given me a new understanding about how to express myself graphically and how to communicate with audiences in a way that my message is clear and personal.

How did you first get into painting?

My artistic journey starts with music. I was highly influenced by South American rhythms where music and dance are a fundamental part of the culture. Despite the fact that I study advertising and art history, I’m a self-taught artist, every single bit of information has been crucial to developing my own style, constant self-education has been my secret.

I get into painting properly thanks to the Summer Exhibition 2014 in London UK, where I featured the art series Perspective Scenarios including the artworks “The Lonely Star”, “Challenger” and “Silver- moon.” This event was the open door of my career.

What is your favorite subject to paint? Why? My work is classified into four series. Retrospective Series, which portraits most of my abstract and figurative mix media work on canvas and wood

panels. Calligraphy Series, dedicated to capturing the essence and symbolism of different languages merge with abstract surrealistic environments.

Equine Series, purely devoted to make more efficient the versatility, character, and strength of the horses, and Amekura Series for digital art.

The best subjects I like to paint are horses and abstract portraits. I find it very interesting how every single individual concludes their own interpretation of my artworks purely by observation. Despite the fact that the figurative elements are tangible, the abstraction always creates very personal meanings.

How would you describe your painting style?

I most identify with abstract surrealism, after an investigation that lasted over two years about the personal life and characters as individuals from the artists that influenced me. I managed to develop a style that is deeply connected with my personality which reflects how I interpret reality and my subconscious graphically.

Which painters do you most often use for reference? Why? The painters I use as a reference are: William Turner, Francis Bacon, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, On Kawara, Gerhard Richter to mention a few. What I like about them is how they manage to blend the light into their environments alongside the colour.

Every single one has a unique way to interpret light: Turner as a nostalgic touch that brings us to that moment in the afternoon where the day is about to finish but not quite yet, Bacon when the light bearly touches his subjects protected by glass cubes, Pollock as the matrix for his colossal eruptions of colors, Rothko with his emotion, On Kawara with his precision and Richter with his spontaneity are definitely my main references.

What is your favorite genre of music to listen to while painting?

I like to listen to Deep House and sometimes Classical music. Thanks to my background as an electronic music producer and record label owner, I have a vast variety of tracks to choose from by mainly EDM (Electronic Dance Music) is my genre of choice.

Why did you decide to move from London to Hong Kong?

I came to Hong Kong in 2016 for Art-Basel and since then I knew that Hong Kong was going to be the door for Asia for my work. I started my My main medium is acrylic, I like the versatility of the element, how quickly it dries. But I tent to use mix media and diversify with unconventional elements like wax, hair, Chinese ink, and tape.

With regards to surfaces, wood is my element, the organic texture and character give the painting an individuality that is hard to perceive from stretched canvas but for some series, the canvas is good as well. My creative process starts with what I feel. I limit myself to three or six colors, always multiples of three, Nicola Tesla’s theory of 369 keys to the universe, then I outline the key elements of the composition and most important the referent points for the eyes to track. For this I use the golden radio theory, then all set; I start with a full background plain color layer without crossing the subject lines for figurative artworks or rhythmical spread for pure abstract. Then I identify the light reflections of volume and mark them quite strongly as they give the dimensional effect to my multilayered works, then I enhance the subject lines and focal points with the opposite color from the spectrum depending on which is the dominant one and finally and best part, varnish. I really like this part because means closure, commitment, realization, Eureka, CREATION! All in one day, I hardly ever work in a painting further than a day for the overall concept but then I spend a lot of time about the minor details, framing, archiving, signing, etc.

I wonder how it would it be if I followed that route but I’m very happy with my decision.

If you could meet any artist who is no longer living, who would it be and why?

This is a very good question because part of my research to become an artist was about the personal lives of many artists. It would be very difficult to narrow that meeting to only one, but Caravaggio would be interesting not because of his art, which is marvellous, but more for the sense of adventure that he portraits as individual.

When you travel, what do you take with you?

I am a minimalistic traveler, I don’t like to carry stuff so I have a special jacket for travelling which accommodates everything that I need: wallet, passport, phone, headphones charger, and power battery. Also a small suitcase with two or three outfits depending on how long my trip is going to be. I never carry any sketchbook or art related instruments.

Which is your favorite ‘Arabian’ destination to travel to?

I am completely and utterly fascinated about the Middle East, especially thanks to the success of my equine series! My favorite destinations are Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Manama. These cities are amazing, fast growing, challenging, architecturally beautiful and hungry of culture and innovation. I was considering to move to Dubai first, but the representation offered by Hong Kong came first and I am really looking forward to doing my first show in the Middle East later this year.

They say if you could be anything but an artist, don’t be an artist. What career are you neglecting right now by being a full time painter?

I was supposed to be a doctor, my mum is a dentist and she would always encourage me to follow this path but as soon I was able to express myself with music and now with art I was hooked! Sometimes

Words by Sonja Smaldone From Saturday 11th to Sunday 12th May 2019, ‘Arte del Cavallo’, the International B morphology show held in Marina di Pietrasanta, had first of all the purpose of projecting and bringing Versilia back to its being a ‘Land of horses’. In the places where Italian poet Gabriele D’Annunzio loved to ride, this prestigious international event has recorded - as per tradition - the presence of hundreds of splendid specimens, authentic purebred Arabians from all over the world accompanied by their handlers, and over the years it has carved out its own place of honour among the most important competitions. As a part of the two-day event dedicated to the equestrian world, around a hundred Arabian specimens arrived in Versiliana from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Qatar and Dubai, as well as from half of Europe.

Among the most anticipated owners, Italian singer and tenor Andrea Bocelli together with his wife Veronica.

Despite his imminent departure for England where he will be singing on the occasion of Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday, Bocelli did not miss out the appointment in Versiliana.

Among the participant breeders who watched the entire competition from the ‘parterre de roi’, it is worth pointing out the attendance of the Minister of Transport of Saudi Arabia, the General

Nei luoghi in cui Gabriele D’Annunzio amava cavalcare, la prestigiosa kermesse internazionale che nel corso degli anni si è ritagliata un posto d’onore tra le manifestazioni più importanti, ha registrato, com’è sua tradizione, la presenza di centinaia splendidi esemplari, autentici campioni provenienti da ogni parte del mondo accompagnati dai loro handler. Nell’ambito della due giorni dedicata al cavallo e al mondo equestre, sono giunti infatti in Versiliana un centinaio di esemplari da Kuwait, Arabia Saudita, Israele, Qatar e Dubai, oltre che da mezza Europa. Tra i proprietari più attesi Andrea Bocelli accompagnato dalla moglie Veronica che, nonostante l’imminente partenza per l’Inghilterra dove canterà in occasione dei festeggiamenti per i 90 anni della regina Elisabetta, non ha mancato l’appuntamento in Versiliana.

Da segnalare la presenza, tra i proprietari delle scuderie che hanno seguito tutta la competizione nel parterre de roi, il Ministro dei Trasporti dell’Arabia Saudita, il General Manager della Famiglia Regale Saudita, ereditieri, nobili ed appassionati di tutto il mondo. This suggestive equestrian demonstration was conceived and promoted by the Municipality of Pietrasanta and Versiliana Foundation as a part of ‘Start-Great Events project’, under the patronage of the Region of Tuscany and the Province of Lucca, and it bore the signature of Luciano Borzonasca for the technical and organisational part in cooperation with Echao (European Conference of Arab Horse Organization) and Anica (Italian National Association of the Arabian Horse).

The quality of the participant horses was outstanding; for two days they challenged each other in beauty and carriage in front of an international jury composed of: Annaratone Ferraroni Maria (Italy); Aeschbacher Urs (Switzerland); Norden Anna (Sweden) and Gozdzialski Lucas (Poland). In his role of Ringmaster: Moschini Cristian (Italy); with the rank of Disciplinary Commissioners: Teobaldelli Gian Paolo (Italy), Raso Barbara (Italy) and Ceccaroni Roberto (Italy). The final championships took place on two fantastic days, also thanks to nice weather conditions and gave the following results: FINAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Yearling Fillies Championship Gold medal winner FAREEDA AL MAR (RFI FARID x MONNA ROSE CHANDRA) bred and owned by Alessandro Marino.

Silver medal winner MARAJJA TMA (MARAJJ x PS JUBILEE) bred by Tm Arabians and owned by Prisco Antonio.

CONCLUSION The nineteenth edition of ‘Arte Del Cavallo’ crowned the already award-winning Gold medal junior filly Ghalliba Al Shaqab, the filly owned by Emir of Qatar, Sheik Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, as the most beautiful horse of the international competition. This super filly, a daughter by multi-champion Hadidy Al Shaqab, won the “Best in Show” award under the admired gaze of over 2 thousand spectators.

The Organizing Committee and the Office of Tourism and Sports of the Municipality of Pietrasanta directed by Luciano Borzonasca for the technical part, spared no efforts to ensure the perfect success of the show, combining the grace and beauty of the Arabian horse with the mesmerising atmosphere of the

CONCLUSIONE La diciannovesima edizione dell’Arte del Cavallo ha incoronato come cavallo più bello della kermesse internazionale Ghalliba Al Shaqab, la giovane puledra di proprietà dell’Emiro del Qatar, lo Sceicco Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani. Questa super puledra, una figlia del campione Hadidy Al Shaqab, ha vinto il titolo di “Best in Show”, sotto lo sguardo ammirato di oltre 2mila spettatori.

Il Comitato Organizzativo e l’Ufficio del Turismo e dello Sport del Comune di Pietrasanta diretto, per la parte tecnica da Luciano Borzonasca, hanno fatto di tutto per assicurare una perfetta riuscita dello spettacolo, coniugando la grazia e la bellezza del cavallo arabo alle affascinanti atmosfere del Parco della Versiliana.

Like every year ‘Arte del Cavallo’ presented itself with an author’s manifesto that for this edition was signed by Pablo Atchugarry; the Uruguayan artist will also be the protagonist of the summer exhibition from 8th June to 29th September called “The Evolution of a Dream”, an initiative of the Municipality of Pietrasanta, the Versiliana Foundation and S.T. Art in cooperation with Contini Gallery in Venice. The winner of the morphological competition was awarded a work by Italian artist Marzio Cialdi, who also exhibited his own sculpture in Versiliana on the occasion of the festival. In addition to the International-B Show, ‘Arte del Cavallo’ offered a weekend market display of handicrafts and typical local products, an entire area focused on horse culture with performances by the Spanish Haute Ecole, demonstrations by master blacksmiths and much else. An opportunity not to be missed out to learn all the secrets of the Arabian horse, the distinctive features of this elegant and noble breed which has always fascinated human beings, not only enthusiasts but also the less experienced public, children and families or simply onlookers. Il vincitore del concorso morfologico è stato premiato con un’opera dell’artista Marzio Cialdi, il quale ha esposto in Versiliana anche una propria scultura in occasione della kermesse. Oltre al concorso morfologico “International B Show” l’’Arte del Cavallo ha proposto nel week-end una mostra mercato di artigianato e prodotti tipici, un’area incentrata sulla cultura del cavallo con esibizioni di Alta Scuola spagnola, dimostrazioni di maestri maniscalchi e tanto altro. Un’ occasione assolutamente da non perdere per conoscere tutti i segreti del cavallo arabo, le caratteristiche distintive di questa elegante e nobile razza, che affascina da sempre non solo gli appassionati ma anche il pubblico meno esperto, bambini e famiglie e semplici curiosi. l Dahma is the mare who generated her Dahmah Shahwaniyah strain in Egypt.

El Dahma was born in 1879 and was one of the first purchases made by the important breeding farm belonging to Ali Bey Pasha Sherif who, in turn, gave her to Khedivé Mohammed Tewfik Pasha, father of Khedivé Abbas Pasha Hilmi II, owner of Kubba Stables. One year before the death of Viceroy, at Khedivé Mohammed Tewfik Pasha’s, El Dahma foaled the mare Nadra El Kebira (1891) by Nader El Kebir, maternal grand-dam of the celebrated Farida (11.4.1921) who, being the daughter of Saklawi II, had 37.5% of El Dahma’s blood.

In 1894, at Khedivé Abbas Pasha Hilmi II’s, El Dahma foaled the foundation mare of the other important

Dahmah Shahwaniyah family in El Zahraa, Obeya by Koheilan El Mesenneh, who was followed by Gazza (1895) by Saklawi I; the latest addition to the family was the grey stallion Saklawi II (1896) who was sired

by Saklawi I, namely, Nazeer’s great-grandsire from his paternal line.

In El Zaahra, Obeya was one of the first horses purchased by RAS on 6th January 1914. She died on 12th November 1919 leaving a large family with top quality subjects. A grand-daughter of Obeya was Sabah 26.8.1920-1936 (Mabrouk Manial x Bint Obeya), dam of the stallion El Fagr (27.6.1033) by Mansour, who AHM | 274

was presented to His Royal Highness Abdulla of Jordan in 1940. Sabah was the mare who produced the largest number of descendants among the daughters of Obeya, with remarkable subjects who would be crucial not only to the selection in El Zahraa but in the entire world. The Sabah line produced well both in terms of stallions and mares. The precious characteristics of these subjects referred to solid bodies and averagely well-shaped necks, excellent balance with good rumps and high tail carriage, strong limbs with good bones and very good gaits on the whole.

Compared to the Farida line, they tended to have slightly longer heads and sometimes were taller. Saba’s great genetic value was confirmed by being the granddam of Sheikh El Arab 17.1.1933 (Mansour x Bint Sabah), the best conveyor ever produced by RAS with a

magnificent Arabian type. He was a highly respected stallion and was selected by General Tibor Pettko Von Szandtner. Sabah was also the grand-dam of the three foundation mares that further developed this family and whose extremely valuable subjects have been carried forward into present time: Layla, Bint Bint Sabah and Bukra.

Layla 5.6.1929 (Ibn Rabdan x Bint Sabah), dam of the great Sid Abouhom (2.3.1936-1963) by El Deree, grand-dam of Emam 27.12.1945 (Balance x Komeira), an outstanding stallion at Hamdan Stables

and Kamar 1.3.1953 (Nazeer x Komeira), dam of Hagir (14.3.1957) by El Sareei, as well as of Hakima (20.11.1970) by Fayek, who produced well at El Zahraa and respectively dams of the EAO stallions Akhtal 5.3.1968 (Amrulla x Hagir) and Hakeem 9.11.1974 (Mourad x Hakima).

Kamar was also the dam of Kahramana (15.10.1966)

by Anter, who in 1968 became one of the top mares at Gleannloch Farms, Spring (Houston), Texas. Last but not least, we shall mention the great Tamria 15.10.1967 (Tuhotmos x Kamar), which in 1968 went to Hungary to build the famous Tamria line at Babolna Stud. Kamar also produced three important stallions at El Zahraa: Wahag (3.9.1964) by Anter, Shadwan (28.3.1972)

by Shaarawi and Al Aneed (13.8.1975) by Alaa El Din. Bint Bint Sabah 19.5.1930 (Baiyad x Bint Sabah), was purchased in 1932 by Henry B. Babson from Chicago for his breeding farm in Grand Detour, Illinois, USA, where she was called Bint Bint Sabbah and built her important family that would spread out on a global scale. Sons of Bint Bint Sabbah were also the excellent stallions Fabah (1950) by Fadl 17.6.193012.9.1963 (Ibn Rabdan x Mahroussa) and his full brother Fasaab (1948), who won in Park English Pleasure, Formal Combination, Pleasure Driving, besides winning first place in Halter classes. Among the many daughters of Bint Bint Sabbah I shall also mention those she had by the stallion Fadl as they have carried forward their progeny to this day: Fadahma (1936), Fasaana (1937), Habba (1945), Faaba (1949), Fa-Abba (1951), Fa-Habba (26.4.1947), dam of the great Falima (22.7.1965-16.6.1988) by Ansata Ibn Halima 17.9.1958-17.9.1981 (Nazeer x Halima), foundation mare of the Nile family at Ansata Arabian Stud .

In conclusion, I shall mention Fay-Sabbah 1 9 3 8

(Fay-El-Dine x Bint Bint Sabbah), dam of the black mare Serrasab (1959) by Fa Serr 1947 (Fadl x Bint Serra I), who in turn is the maternal grand-dam of Fa Halima 1970 (Ansata Ibn Halima x Sabrah by Fabah), Winner of the 1980 titles US National Champion Mare & Canadian National Reserve Champion Mare.

From this family came also two daughters of Ansata Sabiha 1968 (Ansata Ibn Halima x Sabrah by Fabah), Glorieta Saafrana (1982) by Ansata Abu Nazeer, Futurity Champion Mare, and Glorieta Shahlana (1981)

by Ansata Shah Zaman, Scottsdale Top Ten Mare, 03 Futurity Champion Mare, Grand Champion A-Class and full sister of Ansata Shah Zam (28.2.1974), Winner of the National Futurity Champion and US Top Ten Stallion titles.

Bukra 22.3.1942 (Shahloul x Bint Sabah), was a beautiful, classy mare with Saqlawiyah type although she came from the Dahmah strain. She was considered the leading mare at Stud by General Tibor Pettko Von Szandtner, director of El Zaahra. At EAO, Bukra was bred several times to the stallion Nazeer, with whom she conceived the best foals. The promising but unfortunate Ibn Bukra (5.5.1958) was to be among them. While engaged in the racing season with the name of Yeslam, getting excellent results among other things, Ibn Bukra died of colic in 1962; ahead of him, there had been born Ghazal 11.8.1953-30.5.1972 (Nazeer x Bukra), imported in

West Germany in 1955 by Prince Von Knyphausen, owner of Lutetsburg Stud. However, the greatness of this stallion, who would affect the Arabian Straight

Egyptian Horse world selection, has already been considered. Another full brother of Ghazal, Ghazal I (31.1.1956) was given to the Government of Yemen.

With Nazeer, Bukra produced two broodmares that spread their blood across the world, namely, Bint Bukra (19.1.1957) and Ansata Bint Bukra (Husnia) (23.8.1959-21.10.1981). The latter was purchased by Donald L. and Judith Forbis on July 8th 1965 who, at the time, lived in Chickasha, Oklahoma.

Bint Bukra was really precious to El Zahraa and managed to perpetuate her bloodline consistently.

Among her descendants, through her daughter Nagwa (16.10.1961) by Sameh 4.4.1945 (El Moez x Sameera), we may find the stallion Fikri 5.6.1970 (Ramses Fayek x Nadeema by Amrulla), who in 1973 went to Holland at Smaroel Arabians owned by the Smarius family, and the mare Menha 10.1.1974 (Mohawed x Nagwa), who in 1975 was purchased by Dr. W. Georg Olms and eventually brought to Hamasa GestĂźt,

in Germany. The other daughter of Bint Bukra, Fanar (11.3.1965) by Nasralla (Shahriar) 20.3.1956 (Balance x Sehr), was purchased in 1966 by the great Egyptian breeder Madam Wegdan El Barbary in order to deve-

lop her Shams El Asil Stud.

Bint Bukra was also the dam of important stallions such like: El Moutawakil (22.3.1964) by Sameh, and Zahi (15.4.1970) by Ibn Hafiza 24.8.1959 (Sameh x Hafiza), who worked well at El Zahraa.

Ansata Bint Bukra (Husnia) was perhaps the most important broodmare at Ansata Arabian Stud and built the largest branch of the Sabah line in America.

Her exquisite type was appreciated at an international level and by everyone who went to visit her. With her progeny she almost filled to the brim all the Arabian Straight Egyptian Horse farms across the world.

When Ansata Bint Bukra arrived in Chickasha, Oklahoma, in the U.S.A. she was in foal to the stallion Sameh and there she gave birth to Ansata Bint Misr on April 5th, 1966. She was going to be one of the most important broodmares at Ansata Arabian Stud until she died on January 15th, 1991.

Ansata Bint Misr produced 12 foals; the females were all remarkable broodmares and all left an important progeny, either mares or stallions, so it is advisable to remember them: Ansata Damietta 7.4.1971 (Ansa-

ta Shah Zaman x Ansata Bint Misr); Ansata Delilah 10.4.1972 (Ansata Shah Zaman x Ansata Bint Misr); Ansata Aya Halima 9.11.1980 (Ansata Ibn Halima x Ansata Bint Misr); Ansata Misriya 19.4.1986 (Jamil x Ansata Bint Misr). Unfortunately, Ansata Alexandria 22.9. 1979 (Ansata Ibn Halima x Ansata Bint Misr) died when she was just over a month old on November 1st, 1979.

Ansata El Sherif (5.4.1967) by Ansata Ibn Halima, was the second son of Ansata Bint Bukra. A superb stallion that was sold to Clarence and Daisy Hardin, Santa Ynez, California. From the late seventies to the mid-eighties, this stallion would be successfully used also at Bentwood Farms, Waco, Texas, where he left a valued progeny. Other excellent stallions, always out of Ansata Bint Bukra, added to Ansata El Sherif: Ansata El Naseri (7.4.1969) by Ansata Ibn Sudan 1.7.1965-9.3.1987 (Ansata Ibn Halima x Ansata Bint Mabrouka), who was sold to Willis H. Flick & Imogene P. Flick from Glenglade Arabians, Miami, Florida;

Ansata Abu Jamal (19.2.1979) by Ansata Abu Sudan 20.1.1974 (Ansata Ibn Sudan x Ansata Bintmisuna), who was sold to Ed and Dorothy Cole, Williston, North Dakota. Unfortunately, he produced only a few foals. The last one was Ansata Ibn Bukra (20.2.1980)

by Ansata Abu Sudan, who was sold to Count Federico Zichy-Tissen, in Argentina.

Ansata Rhodora (29.3.1968) by Ansata Ibn Halima, was the second daughter of Ansata Bint Bukra.

She was followed by other females: Ansata Sherifa (12.4.1970) by Ansata Ibn Halima, who was sold to Jarrell McCracken from Bentwood Farms, Waco, Texas; Ansata Rosetta (6.4.1971) by Ansata Shah Zaman 28.1.1968-23.1.1985 (Morafic x Ansata Bint Mabrouka); Ansata Bint Sudan (16.2.1973) by Ansata Ibn Sudan; Ansata Regina (19.4.1974) by Ansata El Wazir 23.1.1971 (Tuhotmos x Ansata Bint Sameh). This was the first of the sisters who were born at the new headquarters of Ansata Arabian Stud, located in Lufkin in East Texas; the last born was Ansata Shahrazada (1.7.1975) by Ansata Shah Zaman, who unfortunately died less than a year after her birth on 18.6.1976.

These were all mares who left a remarkable progeny.

I will not go further into details, but I cannot help talking about Ansata Rosetta. This grey mare with an excellent temperament, elegant and full of grace was particularly important for being the dam of the stallions Ansata Omar Halim (25.4.1979-1994) and his full brother Ansata Halim Shah (28.4.1980-Sep.1994)

by Ansata Ibn Halima. In addition to that, Ansata Rosetta left a large female family through her daughters Ansata Ghazala (19.4.1976) by Ansata Ibn Sudan, and Ansata Prima Rose (13.4.1986) by Jamil 3.7.1975 -1986 (Madkour I x Hanan).

Ansata Omar Halim was sold to Lyle & Virginia Bertsch from Zahara Arabian Stud, Fort Wayne, Indiana. In 1993 he was bought by Vera and Peter Stoessel-Vocka from Veruska Arabians, who owned their breeding farms both in Switzerland and in Spain.

In 1994, he was exported to Belgium where he died straight after his arrival. Ansata Omar Halim left an excellent progeny. Among his sons I would like to re-

Zandai Aqir was a successful stallion. He also produced the mare Tejeda (Techeda) (1998) out of Egyptian Rabia 1990 (Ruminaja Ali x Bint Sahrah), who was Champion Mare at the Spanish National Championships in 2000 and 2003.

Tejeda’s full brother, Ramino (20.5.1999), won several European Championships in 2006, including the European Championship in Moorsele, Belgium and was Reserve Champion Stallion at the Erlan Cup A-Show held at the Rullingen Castle, in Belgium. In 2008, the daughter of Zandai Aqir, Aqir El Milan (2005) out of V.A. Elwera 6.2.1997 (Ansata Sinan x Wasoona Bint Kaisoon), won the 3 year-old fillies class at the Egyptian Event Europe and the Frankfurt Egyptian Classic in Frankfurt, Germany. And the list could go on.

Ansata Halim Shah was born on April 28th, 1980 at Ansata Arabian Stud, when the stable was located in

While the staff was carrying out the daily tasks in the barns, Ansata Rosetta was about to give birth.

At that very moment some songs were being played on the radio and could be heard via the stable’s speakers: Shining Star, Fame, Celebration, Once in a Lifetime. They all seemed to divine the future of the foal.

After keeping everyone in suspense, Ansata Rosetta gave birth to a healthy and lively grey colt who caused a general astonishment, managing to get himself in the middle of everything from the very first day.

It was not long before they could see in the colt the qualities the Forbis hoped he inherited from his parents and grandparents: the elegance, the grace and the spirit of his dam, Ansata Rosetta; the beauty, the balance and the kindness of his sire, Ansata Ibn Halima; the extraordinary overall refinement and fine bone structure of his maternal grand-dam, Ansata Bint Bukra; the extreme pride and personality of his maternal grandsire, Ansata Shah Zaman. All features that he inherited from the parents of Morafic and his

full sister Ansata Bint Mabrouka.

This colt had an inborn noble attitude and his royal demeanour was exalted by a high- soft tail carriage.

A potentially exceptional horse ought to have a memorable and significant name, so Donald and Judith Forbis looked for a name that suited him perfectly and decided to call him Ansata Halim Shah: Halim (Kind) from his sire, Ansata Ibn Halima and Shah (King) from his maternal grandsire, Ansata Shah Zaman.

Even as a yearling, Ansata Halim Shah was a very refined and elegant colt. His big, soulful black eyes were constantly inspecting everything around him and he would not miss a trick. He was particularly intelligent and kind, but rather haughty and, with that twinkle in his eyes, he could look very mischievous. To get attention, he would nibble at you, but he would never bite or deliberately hurt anyone. It was his way of saying: “Hey, look at me, I’m special”!

In 1981 the Forbis sold their farm in Lufkin, Texas, and moved the horses to their new ranch in Mena,

Arkansas. A paradise of natural beauty located at the bottom of the Ouachita Mountains.

When Ansata Halim Shah arrived in his new stable, he was a spirited young colt and jumped off the van instinctively. He had lots of quality and was aware of it. He was a young classy horse whose demeanour and attitude reflected an ethereal beauty that would be disclosed to the entire world soon thereafter.

In 1983 Ansata Halim Shah was taken to the Egyptian Event organized by the Pyramid Society, in Lexington, Kentucky, where, under the lead of his handler Richard Sanders, wowed the audience with his beauty.

After a long journey full of unexpected events Ansata Halim Shah and his handler Richard Sanders, even-

At the age of three, he also participated in the Futurity Stallions Class at the National Arabian Horse Show of Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. At that time, Classes were huge and very competitive. Ansata Halim Shah had to compete against 60 stallions, but mana-

tually arrived at the competition. The victory at the American Nationals had earned Ansata Halim Shah a lot of fame so much so that upon his arrival he found a welcoming journalist committee and many fans waiting for him.

When Ansata Halim Shah and Richard Sanders arrived in Port du Versailles, the place where the historic Salon du Cheval used to take place, they found Mizan Taj Halim 1977 (Ansata Ibn Halima x HH April Love), a beautiful deep bay Egyptian Related stallion who in 1980 had been Canadian National Champion Futurity Stallion. He was also from the USA and was presented by the Midwest Training Stables.

The show was a compelling one, with a passionate French crowd and spectators from all over the world.

When the championship ended, there were two sons of Ansata Ibn Halima among the winners: Mizan Taj Halim was proclaimed World Champion Stallion, while Ansata Halim Shah was crowned Reserve World Champion Junior Stallion and he was the only hor-

ged to win the title of U.S. Top Ten Futurity Stallions, grabbing the attention of breeders and enthusiasts from all over the world.

Whoever has watched him cannot but remember his unique beauty, his classic Arabian style, his exquisite, finely dished head, and his beautiful, large, liquid black eyes.

After the Nationals in November 1983, it was decided to have Ansata Halim Shah compete at the World Championship. It was organized a trip to bring the horse, who was in perfect conditions for the show, to the Salon du Cheval in Paris, France.

nenhof Stud owned by Dr. Hans Joachim Nagel, near Bremen, where he stood as a breeding stallion for 18 months. Not only was he used to impregnate local broodmares, he was also bred to selected broodmares from Babolna State Stud in Hungary, as well as to broodmares from the German State Stud of Marbach and from other private farms. Ansata Halim Shah had such a positive impact so to virtually change the German Arabian Horse breeding. Ever since then, any Egyptian horse who does not carry his blood has been placed on a lower level.

his Arabian charisma, Ansata Halim Shah showed himself to the public as a horse of unparalleled beauty and outstanding quality, with an exotic head, big black eyes and a balanced body; thin white skin, dry in his type and elegant. He was not a tall horse, but he had an extraordinary balance and movement so much so that he looked like a giant. He was simply a true Arabian horse.

During this period, Ansata Arabian Stud was constantly receiving guests from all over the world and, one day, young Sheikh Abdul Aziz Bin Khaled Al-Thani from the Al-Thani family, Governor of Qatar, also turned up. Sheikh Abdul Aziz had a sharp eye, he did not miss a thing and knew exactly what he wanted.

Aware of Sheikh Abdul Aziz’s expertise in pedigrees and his ability to take the Arabian world to new heights in the Arabian horse breeding, the Forbis in 1990 sold him the U.S. Top Five Futurity Mare Ansata Splendora 17.2.1986 (Jamil x Ansata Sabrina) and the filly Ansata Majesta 9.3.1989 (Ansata Halim Shah x Ansata Malika). The latter was a daughter of Ansata

When Ansata Halim Shah came back to America, he went through a month-long quarantine in Kentuchy before returning to his stud in Mena, Arkansas.

Breeders just loved Ansata Halim Shah. In the 1980s, until the early nineties, he was exhibited in the Hall of Stallions at the Egyptian Event, organized every year in Lexington, Kentucky, by the Pyramid Society. With

Halim Shah who would become the crown jewel of the new Stud and winner of many titles: 1991 Champion Filly Qatar International Show, 1996 Reserve Senior Champion Mare Qatar International Show, 1997 & 1999 Senior Champion Mare Qatar International Show, 2000 Champion Mare Liberty Qatar National Show. In addition to having produced precious daughters, Ansata Majesta was also the dam of Asshal Al Rayyan (13.11.1996-15.8.2015) by Safir 14.4.1991 (Salaa El Dine x Aisha), one of the greatest stallions of modern age, and the grand-dam of 2002 World Champion Filly Johara Al Naif 2001-2007 (Ansata Shalim x Al Johara). Ansata Majesta also came from the El Dahma family. She was a true Queen and lit the torch that brought the flame of Ansata Halim Shah throughout the Arabian world.

Meanwhile, His Highness the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani sensed that the time had come for Renaissance and was determined to restore the cultural tradition of his ancestors in breeding Arabian horses with excellent blood.

To build his farm, the Emir chose the region of Al

Shaqab, where Qatar had fought a bloody battle for its independence. Al Shaqab was also the name of the stable, in honour of the brave horses and warriors who had struggled against the Ottomans in 1893.

The founding Father of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Jassim Bin Mohammed Al-Thani (Qatar 1825 - Lusail, Qatar 17.7.1913), who ruled from 1878 until the day of his death, chose the Dahman Shahwan strain just like Viceroy of Egypt Abbas Pasha Hilmi I (18481854) had done before for his Stud.

As a matter of fact, the first Dahmah Shahwaniya mare mentioned in Abbas Pasha’s famous manuscript also came from Qatar.

His Highness the Emir of Qatar wanted the corner stallion of Al Shaqab to be a Dahman Shahwan one so, in 1993, in the U.S.A. he bought Sabiell 1990 (Nabiel x AK El Sanaa), himself too from the El Dahma strain.

In 1993 he had just been crowned Supreme Champion Stallion at the Egyptian event in Lexington, Ken-

tucky. Few months later at the World Championship of the Salon du Cheval in Paris, Sabiell was acclaimed 1993 World Reserve Junior Champion Stallion, the first of many world titles to be collected by Al Shaqab in the future.

One day in 1993, a beautiful white mare caught the attention of His Highness Emir Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani. The latter was struck by her extraordinary beauty. This mare was Ansata Majesta, who became famous after winning the Qatar National Championship. So, after he had been collecting information from Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Thani and his brother, Sheikh Abdullah Bin Khalid Al-Thani, His Highness Emir Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani decided to purchase other subjects from Ansata Arabian Stud that would be also included in the Al Shaqab Stud breeding program.

In January 1994 Ansata Halim Shah was sold to His Highness Emir Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani along with some important mares. Then, the stallion returned to his ancestral homeland where the Dahmah Shahwaniya strain had been highly appreciated since the birth of the State.

tar had been a quiet one. As soon as he got off at the airport, the stallion was taken to Al Shaqab Stables in Doha and, shortly after, the selected group of Dahmah Shahwanieh mares also arrived: Ansata Binthalima 25.9.1981 (Ansata Bint Halima x Ansata Delilah), Ansata Sudarra 21.9.1982 (Ansata Abu Sudan x Ansata Delilah), Ansata Deborah 2.5.1984 (Ansata Halim Shah x Ansata Delilah), Ansata Aliha 9.6.1984 (Jamil x Ansata Regina), Ansata Prima Rose 13.04.1985 (Jamil x Ansata Rosetta) and the filly Ansata Malaha 24.03.1993 (Ansata Halim Shah x Ansata Malika).

In addition to these descendants of the mare El Dahma, there was also the Saklawiah Jedraniyah Ansata Narjisa 9.9.1984-1994 (Ansata Ibn Sudan x JKB Bint Nehaya), who died shortly after her arrival in Qatar.

It looked like Ansata Halim Shah and his harem could live together and be happy, but this did not happen.

As fate would have it, Ansata Halim Shah had a serious accident and died at age 14 shortly after his arrival in Qatar, in September 1994. Fortunately, the stal-

lion had impregnated several mares who gave birth to beautiful fillies, and also to a son who would become

famous. This was Al Adeed Al Shaqab.

As a stallion, Ansata Halim Shah was unbeatable.

When he arrived in Germany at the age 3, he had already left his indelible mark. According to statistical data on 20 years of German licensing, an Arabian stallion could produce, in all his life, only one or two children who were allowed to stud work.

On the contrary, Ansata Halim Shah - in just 18 months of his short period in Germany - produced nine stallions that were all approved for stud work. Four of them were serving at Marbach State Stud-farm, under the direction of Dr. Wolfgang Cranz.

As a stallion endowed with a rare ability to produce excellent males and females, Ansata Halim Shah generated colts and fillies that became famous in different disciplines. Their progeny also included National and International champions.

According to Dr. Hans Joachim Nagel, Ansata Halim Shah changed the face of the breed at Katherinenhof

Stud, producing from colored to grey horses and gave it a new look, thereby creating a group of beautiful

grey mares and also the grey stallion Salaa El Dine (28.6.1985 -28.5.2006) by Hanan 20.9.1967 (Alaa El Din x Mona), one of the pillars of the world’s Straight Egyptian selection.

Among the Egyptian horse breeders in Germany who used Ansata Halim Shah as a breeding stallion, there was also Cornelia Tauschke from El Thayeba Stud.

Today when you look at El Thayeba’s horse collection, you can see Ansata Halim Shah in every individual.

In Germany, Ansata Halim Shah produced all children of outstanding quality. I will not list all of them all. However I cannot help emphasize the importance that Salaa El Dine has played in the selection of the last decades.

Another subject that we shall remember is Aisha (9.5.1985) out of Ghazala 28.4.1973-Nov.1993 (Ghazal x Hanan). A broodmare bred by Dr. Hans J. Nagel from Katharinenhof Stud and sold to Al Rayyan Farm, Doha, Qatar, after she had produced some children in Germany: Safir (14.4.1991) by Salaa El Dine, an excellent stallion and sire of the great Ashhal Al Rayyan.

Aisha is also the dam of Darine Al Rayyan (2002) by Ashhal Al Rayyan, who won: 2015 Qatar National

Gold Medal Mare; 2015 Egyptian Event Europe Silver Medal Mare and 2016 Qatar International Straight Egyptian Silver Medal Mare.

Another champion was Maysoun 25.4.1985-Jan. 2010 (Ansata Halim Shah x Maysouna), owned by Karin and Günter Maiworm from Maiworm Arabians, in Balviera, Germany, and Winner of the WAHO Trophy in 2007. He too was an important breeding stallion. As a matter of fact, he has highly impacted on the selection of Straight Egyptians around the world.

El Thay Ibn Halim Shah 13.4.1985 (Ansata Halim Shah x Mahameh by Ibrahim), from El Thayeba Stud, Germany, also from El Dahma’s family, who was Premium Colt at the Stallion Licensing in 1987; excellent stallion at performance test in flat racing; Asil Cup Senior Champion Stallion, National Champion Stallion of Germany and sire of many International champions.

El Thay Mansour 8.2.1986 (Ansata Halim Shah x El Thay Maheera by Nizam), who was Elite stallion and

Winner in both performance and halter.

Kamla II 1985 (Ansata Halim Shah x Mona III by Hadban Enzahi), who built a large family and became the most important breeding stallion at El Thayeba Stud in Germany.

Ibn Bint Inas 22.4.1985 (Ansata Halim Shah x Bint Inas by Gassir), born on the Hungarian State Studfarm of Babolna, which placed second at the German Licensing of 1990.

Nil Tahar 1.12.1984-Feb.2018 (Ansata Halim Shah x Tiffaha by Jamil), bred by Franziska & Urs Aeschbacher from Nile Arabians, Switzerland, who in 1995 was sold to Arlette & Ernst Studer from Studer Arabians, Bonnac, France. There, she also produced the handsome stallion AS Tahnoon (04.07.2000) by Icham 6.3.1993 (Sindibad x Ameera). Nil Tahar won many titles: Junior Champion Mare, in Bern in 1986; National Champion Mare, in Frauenfeld in 1986; International Junior Champion Mare, in Frauenfeld in 1987. Moreover, she got second place at the Paris

World Championship in 1987 and second place, in Baden-Baden, Germany in 1989.

In conclusion, I want to mention the beautiful Tamria II 24.7.1985 (Ansata Halim Shah x 211 Zohair), who comes from the family of Obeya through Layla. And the list could go on.

When in 1985 Halim Shah, returned to his Stud, in Mena, Arkansas, but also everywhere in the U.S.A., he produced plenty of subjects of stunning quality. In order not to bore the readers, I will only mention: - Ansata Hejazi (8.5.1992-Oct.2015) out of Ansata Sudarra 21.9.1982-24.7.1995 (Ansata Abu Sudan x Ansata Delilah), perhaps the most important son of Ansata Halim Shah. Purchased in 1999 by Mohammed Jasim Al Marzouq from Ajmal Arabian Stud, Safat, Kuwait, he was going to be the Head stallion.

In the U.S., before leaving for Kuwait, this great mover had been crowned as: Reserve Supreme Champion at the Arkansas Victory Challenge Show of 1995; Reserve Supreme Champion, Champion Extended Futurity, 3 years-old World Champion Class Stallion and

Top Five in Liberty Class at the 1995 Egyptian event.

Among the many important sons of Ansata Hejazi I cannot help mentioning: Ansata Selman 18.9.1999 (Ansata Hejazi x G Shafaria); Ansata Safeer 16.2.1996 (Ansata Hejazi x Ansata Samsara) and his full brother Ansata Al Murtajiz (14.2.1997); Ansata Malik Shah 22.2.1999 (Ansata Hejazi x Ansata Malaka) and his full brother Ajmal Al Kout (2004); Ajmal Moneera 2006 (Ansata Hejazi x Hamasa Massuda) and Ajmal Fhedaa 2007 (Ansata Hejazi x Classic Farida).

- Ansata Sekhmet (26.5.1989), full sister of Ansata Selket, who in 1997 was sold to HRH Prince Khalid SK Al Saud and exported to Saudia Arabia, where she would sadly die upon arrival. Luckily enough, she has left us a good production, including the handsome stallion Ansata Sirius (23.8.1996) by Ansata Iemhotep.

- Ansata Bint Aliha (23.3.1991) by Ansata Aliha 9.6.1984 (Jamil x Ansata Regina), purchased in 1994

by Vera and Peter Stossel-Vocka from Veruska Arabians, Spain and Switzerland. She was Reserve Champion Mare in Wels, in Austria and Champion Mare in Tilburg, Holland.

- Ansata Malaha (24.3.1993) (Ansata Halim Shah x Ansata Malika). Again I quote her to underline her

exceptional importance. As a matter of fact, after she had arrived at Al Shaqab Stud, in 1994, Ansata Malaha was crowned Middle East Champion Filly and, in 1999, was Qatar National Reserve Senior Champion Mare.

In the short period he had been living in Qatar, Ansata Halim Shah produced other beautiful children.

Among the females, I would like to remember: the Abeyyah, RN Sultana (1995-2009) out of Ameena 1983 (Jamil x Ken Amal), bred by Al Rayyan Farm, and Aliah Al Shaqab (13.3.1995) out of Imperial Im Pharida 1986 (Ansata Imperial x Imperial Phanadah), from the family of Layla. She was Champion Filly at Qatar International Show in 1998, Qatar National Reserve Champion Filly in 1999 and Reserve Champion Filly at Qatar International Show in 2001.

Among the boys who were born at that time, I would like to mention: Thaqib Al Nasser 1995 (Ansata Halim Shah x Imperial Madanah), also from the family of El Dahma, himself a National Champion Stallions of Qatar, who was exported to Australia by Saba Arabians. In conclusion, I would like to remember: Al Adeed Al Shaqab 13.4.1995-4.11.2018 (Ansata Halim Shah x

Sundar Alisayyah by Ruminaja Ali), that I have mentioned earlier in this paper. Also thanks to the superlative organization of Al Shaqab Stud, this stallion became an International champion: 1997 Qatar National Champion Colt, 1999 Middle East Champion Stallion, 2000 Qatar National Champion Stallion, 2001 Champion Stallion Qatar International Show, 2002 All Nations Cup Champion Stallion and 2003 World Champion Stallion. Al Adeed Al Shaqab has bred females of the hi-

ghest type. Unfortunately, he has not been able to reach his sire’s level because he has produced only a few males of stunning quality thanks to their dams who were all first-rate broodmares.

Ansata Halim Shah has come into many people’s life, leaving each person a precious memory of his remarkable virtues.

Interviewing breeders is something we do often here so I wanted to spice things up with an interview of an influential German Arabian Horse breeder.

Who is Kathrin Hampe Klingebiel? Please share with us a short background of you and your Farm.

I will always remember the moment I saw my first Arabian horse as it was yesterday. A teacher in the little village where I was born owned an Arabian mare. Laika was her name.

The minute I laid eyes on that horse as a five-years-old kid I was mesmerized. The way she moved, the way she carried her tail… The gentle big eyes. So special to me. Whenever the lady came back from a hack I was waiting for her and begged her to sit on the horse for the last 50 meters until she reached her barn. I will never forget how this horse took care of me as a little child.

I always loved to ride and I still love all horses. But it was simple and clear as can be: if one day I will be lucky enough to have my own horse it will be an Arabian horse.

What have been the bloodlines you have been focusing on, and why did you choose them? Has this focus changed over the years?

When I was a young child the Arabian horses which influenced my taste and defined the ideal Arabian for me, for sure were El Shaklan and Ruminaja Ali. Icons of the breed till today. When years later I searched for my first own horse, I fell in love with Ali Jamaal and his offspring – again Ruminaja Ali blood in it. For me they possess a certain “look” which I still adore and so, most of my breeding program, is built on these lines. As the Ali Jamaals sometimes are a bit shy when showing we added some Russian/Polish blood to add that splash of “vavavoom”.

Tell us key moments that stand out in the early phases of your breeding agenda. How have your breeding goals transformed over the years?

For sure there are key moments in the show ring and a lot more key moments at home.

In the show ring it was for me when the first foal I ever bred, EA Arjen el Marwetyn, won Gold Champion at his first show (Tulip Cup 2014) and continued to be successful in the ring at every stage of his age. I am proud that I bred a horse which continues to develop so well. And is getting better and better with time.

In the barn there are so many moments which make me happy and content. Seeing the foals born, the horses growing up and most of all feeding time in the evening which is so peaceful. Seeing that my horses are happy and are horses who like people and are good to live with. Experience and living with my horses on that close day-to-day basis is for sure the biggest pleasure for me.

What, in your opinion really defines a ‘breeder’?

Breeding is a lot about knowledge, experience, patience and also about some luck. A breeder always does “the work” – of knowing his horses well, knowing about pedigrees and never stops being curious and learning. A key sentence is for sure: know your mares!

A person who does these days common “trial and error” combinations / breeding en masse with embryo transfer I personally do not consider a breeder at all but a mass factory.

I hope I am able to breed overall good horses with consistency. That for sure takes time and effort, needs passion, stamina and I question myself an awful a lot before I make a breeding decision. Constant learning is key for me. In breeding I do not follow a fashion but I like to make decisions for the future. Long term goals we can say.

Do you have any tips on how people can go about locating good, quality Arabian horses breeders?

What questions or measures would you say to take to weed out a bad breeder?

Take your time looking around and see and experience the kind of Arabian which suits the vision of your perfect Arabian horse. Meet people, listen and learn. Ask questions. There should be no rush.

I found that most breeders are happy to share their knowledge and most of all: make your homework and learn as much and as fast as you can what makes a good horse which is able to function and work. Nobody will do that job for you. And with all respect to the modern trend, there is a lot more of horse behind a pretty face and that part has to be correte to be able to function well for years.

Describe an average day living with your Arabian horses.

For me it is a childhood dream come true, no doubt.

But all in all, I would describe my barn as a normal working breeding farm. Since last year we are also home of a trainer who has boxes with us, which added a bit of a new dimension to it and for sure is interesting. Personally I like being very involved in every aspect of the operation, from everything horsey to the farm itself.

The winters are more calm whereas spring and summer are defined by foaling and breeding and show season. And it still is every single bit exciting as it was in the beginning.

I like to be close to my horses and know them well.

As I personally do not come from a horse background but studied Business and Economics at University, learning all the relevant things of running a farm and breeding and dealing with horses in every matter and situation took me a while and I for sure give it a lot of heart and soul. And I will never lose the drive to learn more and be better.

As a breeder, how do you feel about the showing environment? Do you think that changes should be made to support and praise breeders more?

I still like to show my horses and to compete and see where I stand with my breeding program. But for sure the whole environment of showing becomes tougher every year. Horse world sometimes reminds me of the art world – both are unregulated markets which are often open for a lot of non correct behaviour in any aspect.

Events get bigger and often are very professionally done. Horses seem to travel worldwide for shows.

But from what I can see, is, that less and less real breeders like to show. The amount of money you need to invest in a trainer and transport to shows and entry fees and and and, is high. And often even at smaller shows you suddenly compete against some big name owner, likely from Middle East. That is not very rewarding. For sure many have wonderful horses but it would be helpful if they do not attend every European show so that the European breeders get more of their own stage to show their horses again. For me personally I like the Chantilly Breeders Cup a lot. It is

good to compete and see where one is standing and being able to compare the own horses against others for sure. Also the newer European (only) shows like in StrĂśhen are a good development I think. But we all must find a way to put the focus back on the European breeders.

Can you single out key successes with specific reference to the ones that perhaps better define your breeding Farm?

In this case I would not use a show event or show success to define that.

I consider as a success that every year I breed better horses all in all than in the previous year. That is not defined by a show success of every horse but by the overall quality of the horse. Also I am not averse to using stallions which are not big names if I am convinced by them. So far we had very good results with these choices.

Any regrets with your breeding programme since the last show?

No, absolutely not. I personally do not breed “for

show”purposes. If my horses are rewarded at a show, I am very grateful and happy and proud of course but, most of all, it is my goal to breed an overall very good horse which has quality in his body and mind.

Do you think that dedicated breeding programmes still have a place in the industry nowadays?

These breeding programs in my opinion are the backbone, core, heart and soul of this “industry”. If we lose these breeders, then what is left?

We need people with a passion for the horses itself and not only with the passion to take a trophy home and get their picture taken.

A lot of animal activists would argue that horses are often subjected to ill-treatment during their training or even at shows. Any thoughts?

This is for sure a topic we all should keep an eye on like in every horse sport.

As an owner, I of course have the well being of my horse as a priority. Personally I regularly visit my horses in training to see how they are and to chat with the trainers how things go. And I am not resi-

stant to advice. I assume strongly that ill-treatment exists but I can honestly say that I never had a horse coming home worse or different then when I did send it to a European trainer. But also I am not the kind of owner who pressures a trainer to win under any circumstances. In the European shows, I think our DCs do a solid job. And also most of our trainers. There are negative exceptions for sure and these have to be punished and effectively, no matter who the owner or handler of a horse is.

Any goals for the next year?

Simply said: Onwards and upwards! Every year I will aim to breed better, learn more and progress.
