was back in the spotlight on 21st February 2020 after being sold for a staggering $585,000.00 at 4th Annual Marquise Auction taking place during the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show.

At same auction, one more breeding from Dominic M was successfully sold for the amount of 21.500$. Two great achievements that hold Dominic M responsible for more international championships accolades than any other sire in the modern era.

DUBAI ISSUE 2020 Dear Readers and Lovers of the Arabian horse, Behind the Arabian horse there is a boundless world of free time, sport, competition, love for a companion that every day teaches us about passionate living, constant learning and confrontation with an energy that is unknown to other breeds. The year that we have just left behind confirmed the dynamism of this scenario which, despite the economic crisis, still moves forward an important industry for all of us in this community.

At very heart of this edition is our 2020 Show Tour in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia that took us back into the genuine land of the Arabian horse. At the beginning of the local showseason, we took part in the 2020 Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Arabian Horse Festival held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, then we were invited to the 1st Al Shiraa’a Arabian Horse Show in Abu Dhabi, following which we joined in the 22nd Abu Dhabi International Arabian Horse Championship where we met breeders, friends and made new acquaintances. It was a beautiful and constructive experience that made us learn even more about local studs and breeding programs, which were all very interesting.

Also in this issue, you will come across pages about some of the best contemporary representatives of the breed: Dominic M celebrating the most recent successes of his children in the United Arab Emirates, but also in Brazil;

SG Labib who is continuing his successful sire career at Capecci Training Centre, Italy; last but not least, the beautiful horse collection standing at Elegantika Training Center, Italy, and the selection carried out at Knocke Arabians, Belgium. The cultural content of the Magazine was mainly provided by William Richardot de Chosey with a short essay on Monte Carlo World Arabian Horses Circus Festival last January in the Principality of Monaco, and a very nice article on Arabian horses and International movies.

We had the chance to interview many personalities of the sector and prominent individuals in the industry such as: judge Dhari Al Mejem from Kuwait; breeder dr. Nils Ismer from Germany; handler Nicolas Frere from Belgium; DC Fahrang Fazeli from Iran; stable manager at Bait Al Arab (Kuwait) Mr. Jonas Salzmann from Germany; painter Rafał Wa l e n d o w s k i from Poland; riding model Lucie Prsalova from Czechoslovakia; Mr. Francesco La Punzina and Ms. Francesca from Sicily as the Riding Couple of this edition. Inside the international Arabian horse community there are many different ways of pursuing and implementing the commitment to the Arabian breed, but, these different ways all share a common denominator: a deep love for the Arabian horse that continues to keep us together and comes back to us as a healing therapy by itself. Such a therapy springs from your heart and it is fuelled by your passion.

There you need no treating physician…but your Arabian horse.

Hamid Shokouh, Dana Russo and Paola Drera’s photographic research gravitates towards the Arabian horse, a dimension in which the horse does not only appear as a noble creature, as a bearer of shared cultural values and meanings; but in the relationship between his being physical, his action and his spiritual dimension.

Photography is the tool they can better control to bring to light the inner dimension of the Arabian horse. It does not replicate reality but produces new knowledge. In this process they are only a means, they try to minimize or even cancel their presence as much as possible, because they know that their judgment is limited when compared to any form of artistic expression.

THE BRAZILIAN BEAUTY BAVIERA HVP

Baviera HVP (Marwan Al Shaqab x HB Bessolea) was born in 2012 in Brazil. Bred by Nelson de Oliviera Prata Pinto Moreira, Brazil, is currently owned by Aria Prestige Holdings LLC and is on lease to Mr. Ahmad Abdulaziz Al Babtain of Abhaa Arabians, Kuwait. Baviera HVP is considered a vision of perfection. Her parents have blessed her with the very best. Baviera HVP gained stardom very early in life and it was evident that she was going to be considered a queen of the ring. It was at the 2016 Brazilian Nationals that Baviera HVP made her name known. In the United States, with her main man, Andrew Sellman at her side, she took on all the major shows in the U.S. in 2018. When Ahmad Abdulaziz Al Babtain of Abhaa saw Baviera HVP, he knew that he had to have her under his banner. He knew that she would be a perfect fit as well as the perfect candidate to campaign throughout Europe. Once the lease was signed, Baviera HVP made her way to Italy where she

would reside and be trained and shown by professional horseman and lover of the Arabian horse, Paolo Capecci. Baviera HVP made her European debut on the sun kissed sands in the French Riviera at the Mediterranean and Arab Countries Arabian Horse Championships.

Paolo showed her to perfection and she was crowned Silver Champion Senior Mare and both her supporters and the teams at Abhaa Arabians and Capecci Training Centre were elated. With Paolo Capecci at her side and the full support and love of the Abhaa Arabians, Capecci Training Centre, Sahara Scottsdale and Aria Arabians teams behind her, Baviera HVP was bound to blossom on European soil. At the Salon du Cheval World Championships in Paris 2019, Baviera HVP was named the most beautiful mare in the world, Gold Medal Senior Mare. She dazzled crowds and judges, taking her name and the of name Abhaa Arabians to the Olympus of the Arabian breed.

ocated in Ströhen, Germany, Gestüt Ismer is one of the most famous and successful private breeding programs in Europe dedicated to international quality production. In the stable of Ismer Stud you can find World, European, and National Show Champions and first class riding horses. Countless victories throughout Europe on international shows, tournaments and races have proved that the breeding goal is maintained to the maximum extent. I had the honour to interview Dr. Nils right after the 2020 edition of PSAIAHF in Saudi Arabia last January, he was very pleased to walk me through the main stages of his lifetime activity as a breeder and spokesman of the Arabian horse.

Let’s start from the very beginning.

Please, i nt r o d u c e yourself to our readers.

Give us some background to you, your family and education.

My name is Dr. Nils Ismer and I was born at Ismer Stud and Tierpark Ströhen. My family has been breeding Arabian horses since 1959, and, today, we have about 200 Arabians at the stud. After finishing my veterinary studies, I was working four years at the Veterinary Clinic in Lüsche to improve my veterinary skills, especially in reproduction. In 2007, I took over the farm of my father and since then I have been running it with my wife and my two children.

What made you prefer the Arabian breed to all the other breeds? And how long have you been breeding it?

I had no chance to escape! Born in one of the biggest Arabian stud farms in Europe leaves certainly a life-long impression. The captivating beauty, the versatility and the very unique character of the Arabian horse caught me already at a very young age. I first showed one of my father’s mares in Aachen when I was only 10 years old. That left a deep mark on me. The overwhelming feeling, when you walk through the meadows with new born foals is irreplaceable.

What does the word ‘breeding’ mean to you?

What specific qualities or skills do you need to become a good breeder?

Breeding m e a n s creation.

You need to have a vision of “ y o u r ” horse and should not just follow icons. Combined with a strong passion and rare talent of being critical to your own program, you can achieve a lot. No horse is perfect; no combination is predictable! That keeps the game fascinating. On the other hand, it helps a lot if you do have a clear picture of the ancestors of your breeding horses.

When was Gestüt Ismer created? What’s your philosophy Dr. Ismer?

Ismer Stud was founded in 1959 by our late grandfather Rolf Ismer, who was born in Silesia, Poland. He

married our Grandmother Annemarie, who was in charge of the beautiful farm, which was run by her family since more than 700 years. The idea of my grandfather and my father was to breed a functional Arabian horse with high type and correct structure. The unique beauty should never conceal the importance of performance, health and strengths. By combining bloodlines from the Polish programs with bloodlines from Weil and Egyptian pedigrees, we have tried to improve our own stock year by year, following a consequent selection.

Rideability and performance are the basics for a balanced and well- structured horse, which must be the basement for perfect beauty.

Which bloodlines are mostly bred at your Studfarm?

Our first mares came from Griesbach stud and belong to some of the most famous bloodlines of the Weil Marbach breeding.

Later, my father imported many horses from Janow Podlaski and Michalow and added Egyptian stallions to the program.

Based on these, we try to add useful genetic material to our breeding every year.

Lately, we have used Pallaton K, Ascot DD and Poseidon OS, which all three left a remarkable progeny. Besides that, we keep running a small straight Egyptian program based on the major impression of the Hadban Enzahi son Madkour I and a strong influence of Hanan and Sabah, both mares from Dr. Hans Nagel.

Who is/are the most important breeding stallion(s) at Gestüt Ismer at the moment?

Why? Ascot DD, because he is combining a unique pedigree with fantastic offspring, especially concerning beauty and movements. But also Pallaton K gives us great opportunities, Arabian Horse Show at Ismer Stud as he is a fantastic horse and producer and has neither WH Justice nor Gazal Al Shaqab blood, which I am afraid you cannot find very often anymore these days!

Which of your mares are you mainly using to improve or evolve your breeding program?

Currently we are using mares by WH Justice son Altis, by Gazal Al Shaqab son Gazwan Al Nasser, by Excalibur son El Mariachi and by QR Marc son IS Exxpu. The most outstanding mares at the moment are IS Et Tu by IS Exxpu, IS Wimea and IS Ella Nora by El Mariachi.

How do you tackle the concepts of ‘beauty’ and ‘functional correctness’ in our modern day Arabians?

It is actually a very important question, as our breed is losing the functionality part of it by misusing our show system. Many winning horses at big shows are not very functional anymore and have lost the ability to move in a powerful and balanced way. By using stallions and also selecting mares with strong movement skills, we are trying to keep these major important aspects in our breeding program.

Good examples are some of the stallions we are currently using such as: Altis, El Mariachi, Pallaton K and Ascot DD!

Where did your passion for morphology competitions arise from? Please, outline some of the most important victories in the show environment so far.

Well, showing a class-winning mare with ten years of age at the European Championships set a dangerous seed! This was the beautiful Mashoura by Madkour I - Shiwa in 1986. In 1989 her full-sister Madoura won Reserve European Champion in Fontainebleau! Lately, it was the Reserve European Champion Title of IS Exxpu, which was bred in the seventh generation in Ströhen!

What is it you’d like to still experiment at this stage of your breeding career in the Arabian horse industry?

I am still waiting - and hoping - for my first own bred World Champion! But the big challenge for the future will be to find an exceptional stallion with outcrossed bloodlines like HL El Ganador for example. I hope that our breeding society will be brave enough to walk on alternative ways. Otherwise, we are locking ourselves in the trap of inbreeding.

What are the objectives you would like your breeding program to reach in the future?

Right now we already breed the horses I wish for. IS Et Tu is such an example. She is feminine and elegant, correct but breathtaking! I only hope that we can do this more often and still keep a good variety of dam-lines.

When and why was Tierpark Ströhen created? What’s the main thought behind it?

It was founded also in 1959 just like the Stud-farm. In the beginning it was a combination of business concept and “living your dream”. My grandfather was an animal crazy person and just got tired of so many people visiting him and watching all his lovely animals, but not paying for it. Over the years, Tierpark has become more and more professional and it is following the main responsibilities of every professional Zoo, which is: education, species protection and recreation for the people. We always try to bring our visitors very close to the animals, especially the children, and try to teach them also the importance of species protection and biological facts. Right this year, we are starting a program to support the endangered species in our Zoo, but also in the region. Besides that, we are running programs where you can have unique experiences with wild animals like the elephants for instance, and at the same time you are part of their entertainment!

Dr. Ismer, will you please leave a final message to the readers of AHM? Let us start a discussion about our breeding! Is it wise to produce 10 Embryos of the same mare in one year? Is it clever to provide semen of stallions worldwide and keep many potential stallions out of the business? Are we helping the breed by using only two sire-lines in the show-breeding?

We should be open for new thoughts, even though they may reduce our options in one way, they may open new doors in the other way.

Interviewing DC’s is something we do not often do, so I wanted to bring to light and underline the constituent parts of this profession by talking to Mr. Farhang Fazeli from Iran. He was very pleased to walk me through the main aspects of his personal experience as a Disciplinary Commissioner inside of the Arabian Horse show industry.

Who is Farhang Fazeli? Please share with us some background to you and your family.

I was born in a horsey-family. My father is still a Veterinary practitioner, so I have been with horses since I was a teenager. After I finished university, I started breeding Arabian horses seriously, actually I was the first person after Islamic Revolution in Iran, in 1979, who concentrated on breeding and promoting a new generation of the Arabian horse. As you might know, Iran is one of the oldest countries in the world with Arabian horses, but, what I was looking for it was new bloodlines and new breeding programs. My daughter Neela is a big fan of Arabian horses although she is only 7, but, we talk a lot

about this beautiful creature so I hope she will continue what I have done and I still do for my native country.

Farhang, when did you meet an Arabian horse for the first time?

The journey with a new generation - or let’s say a new type of Arabian horses - started in Poland in 2005-2006. I could visit private breeders and state-studs for my very first time, and I got simply hypnotized by the stunning quality and beauty of their horses. Ever since that time, I have been travelling to Poland every year and I still have many good friends which makes Poland like a second home to me.

When and why did you start this profession as a DC? That’s a nice question! I was sitting in a restaurant with Tomasz Tarczynski, who is still one of my best friends, talking about horses on the way to visit Sylvatica Arabians. At some point, Tomasz came up with an idea and said to me out of the blue: “Let’s try to become ECAHO officials, I will maybe start as a Judge and you as a Disciplinary Commissioner”. After many years, he has become an A-list judge, for sure one of the best, while I am an A-list Disciplinary Commissioner. Pity that Tomasz didn’t come up with the idea of being on the list of Forbes top 100 billionaires in the world!

What is the core of your work? What does a DC exactly do during an Arabian Horse show competition?

I believe many people still underestimate the job and jurisdiction of DCs at shows. The main responsibility is to work for the welfare of the participating horses; the second one, it is to ensure a very fair com-

petition for all the exhibitors. As matter of fact, the job of a DC starts before the show and finishes after the show, it is not as easy as it looks.

During a show if everything goes wrong, it’s the job of DCs to take care of it. So, as a DC, I have to stay sharp from the beginning until the end of the show, making sure that everything is under control and that the rules of Blue Book are being applied in details. All sorts of complaints are made to DCs during a show and, sometimes, in less than a second, I am required to decide what to do to solve the issue.

If any, which is one of the most frequent complaints that you can hear about the disciplinary process at shows?

“Don’t interrupt my horse presentation!”. This is what my DC collegues and I commonly hear at shows…Of course, it is never our intention to interrupt some handlers, but, sometimes, we have to!

In your opinion what really defines a good and reliable DC? 6. I believe honesty comes first, then you have to have some natural ability to serve as a manager but, even more than that, you got to have personality! When you appear in a showground, you should forget about all the friendships. The Blue Book is the only friend during a show! Being a manager with an ability to handle multiple tasks is also important as sometimes, in some shows, you can also be required to assist as an accountant, as a speaker, as an organizing team member, as a show officer, and so forth‌ A lot of animal activists would argue that horses are often subjected to ill-treatment at shows. Any thoughts?

In general, this is NOT the case, but, there are many cases with evidence that the answer is YES unfortunately! This is more likely to happen among unprofessional handlers whom are trying to be like the famous handlers without knowing the basics of the horses.

Any specific goals for the next year?

For the year 2020, I am going to organize an event in Tehran to promote Arabian horses. This will be some time in May, after which I am looking forward to being on the National list of judges to get more experience about horses in general.

Fahrang, anything else you want to add and say to our readers?

Please read the Blue Book at least once. If you are an exhibitor, this will be very helpful both for you as a handler and for us as DC’s in order to have a better cooperation at shows. Finally, all of you are more than welcome to come and visit my Farm in Tehran. You will have a very pleasant and unforgettable stay. I promise!

lthough the true origins of Falconry are still unknown, everyone agrees that it must be recognized as one of the oldest hunting methods as well as an activity that is still relevant today.

No doubt the term falconry stems from the use of hawks, which are the fastest birds in the world. It is a name that applies to flight hunting as it was originally adopted in the vast desert regions of central Asian countries by nomadic populations and hunters with the mastery of the use of raptors such as: Falco cherrug, Falco rusticolus, Falco biarnicus, Falco peregrinus, This activity would later develop in the European countries following the taming of the Arabian horse, a crucial companion of the man, but also in the Middle East due to the many caravans that would cross those countries.

The use of prey birds was strictly related to getting food easily, and it was practised by men wanting to free themselves from harvesting.

Such an unsophisticated hunting activity quickly developed among populations operating into the nature world, often living in topographies and climates of territories hosting animal species suitable for hunting.

In the history books, one must have seen the drapery of Bayeux dating back to the 10th century representing an astonishing scene of falconry: William the Conqueror with a hawk in his hand receives Harold, which proves the importance of the practice at the time.

During the Crusades, High Dignitary Knights in Europe discovered an ancestral practice of this

extraordinary hunting activity. In this continuity, the Holy King Louis IX ordered, in 1248, his portrait with a hawk in his hand.

Another no less famous King, Charles V, gave special attention to the writing of the Book of ‘Roy Modus’, a historical Bible on Falconry that has long been an important reference book.

Falconry was considered as an emblem of nobility in many European Royal Courts, it attracted the attention of several monarchs who would rival different specimens of birds of prey, particularly the hawks as they would represent the form of inaccessible beauty. It was in the Flanders, precisely in the small village of Arendonk, from the 10th to the 18th century, where one could buy the most beautiful birds for European courses.

In Belgium, the Falconry Club of Loo was very dynamic; until 1853 it was placed under the eminent protection of King William III of the Netherlands.

From most ancient times to the present day, falconry has always been and it must remain an Art, a sum of all knowledge, an essential element for any artistic expression with a tradition possessing its own codes and its own techniques for hunting. In the modern era, from the 18th to the 19th century, the appearance and the use of the rifle, which allowed for faster hunting, did eclipse the practise of falconry for a while, yet, it would never completely disappear.

In the framework of different practices and uses of falconry, high flying kept being practised in two ways: top- flight or visual flight, both performed on rather

flat areas, with clear sky and the use of the gyrfalcon, also known as Falco Rusticolus.

It should be noted that top-flight still remains the most sophisticated performance in flight-hunting insofar as it requires a very focused action on the part of the falconer, this sort of hunting being especially oriented towards the feathered game like the partridge, the pheasant without forgetting the waterfowl.

As far as low-flight is concerned, it can be practiced either in the undergrowth or in the plain, which allows hawks to hunt game animals or even rabbits, deer or small boars, but also small feathered animals, placed on the falconer’s point, the bird of prey waits for its moment, when the falconer frees it to stalk its prey in the space over it, the bird will be on its favourite ground.

As opposed to collective imagination, at no time in history has falconry been the exclusive preserve of Middle Eastern

countries, it was largely practiced also in Europe in countries where hawks managed to adapt to indoor or rugged terrains, just as much as in desert regions.

All countries where falconry has long been a traditional practise have always been aware of their task of protecting and taking this discipline to the next step in an ever-changing world.

So, in 1969 two organizations were set up: The Fund of Intervention for the Raptors (FIR) and the International Falconry Association (IAF) later, in 1976, it was held the first World Falconry Conference in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, which managed to gather nearly eighty countries, was myself able to follow the debates.

Falconry is part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and it must be considered as an Art, all falconers, each with their own cultural background, have a developed sense of ethics about their specialty and great respect for birds.

We must bear in mind that anyone wishing to get the title of ‘Falconer’ will have to go through years of apprenticeship, France always remains the cradle of European falconry with its own language that stays unique in the world for its great diversity.

The title of Master Falconer is a rarity to obtain. French falconer Bernard Bailly is one of those who made it as his knowledge is impressive, but, like all scholars, he quite often remains locked in his own Art. It is necessary to know how to

communicate and transmit signals as he himself would profit from it.

In the modern era some valuable progress has been made in falconry, this can be seen in the quality of bird feed, in the use of telemetry that enormously reduces the loss of a bird, as well as in a more accurate veterinary care; yet, it is rather sad to note that some professionals in veterinary medicine are still behind in this specific sector, they are more like practitioners for common animals.

Very beautiful and well-equipped facilities for veterinary care have been installed at great costs in today’s Gulf countries, contrary to what happens in Europe where the means are not the same. It is no secret that in the United Arab Emirates local lobbies have long been involved in this activity and its traditions are no longer the preserve of Bedouin tribes, but they are subject to the influence of wealthy local dignitaries.

countries hold Moroccan falconers’ great knowledge in high esteem as they are maintaining a high tradition related to men and to their faithful purebred Arabian Asil horses.

At a cultural level, hawks have always captivated artists over the centuries, and have inspired them in their sculptures as well as in their paintings. Among those artists, we shall mention: Philippe de Champaigne, Giotto, Pisanello, Gozzoli, Holbein, Oudry, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Henri Rousseau, Eugene Fromentin, Utamaro and many others whose works are exhibited at the most famous museums in the world.

The passion for falconry is a ‘wealth’ to be treasured by all those people who love the Divine that shines through these Masters of the Wind.

For instance, bustard hunting with the hawks takes now place in off-roads cars that have replaced the horses who once offered a view of rare beauty.

The origins of hawk hunting cannot be ascribed to the countries of the Middle East. As a matter of fact, in the Kingdom of Morocco, more precisely in El Jadida in the province of Doukkala where falconry is ageless, the Ouled Frej Lekouassem Tribe brings together the most valuable scholars of falconry that can be found across the world. They continue to live close to their birds, which bear the respectful name of ‘at-tayr al hur’, that is, free bird.

Although in their advanced age, these protagonists have the concern to transmit their history along with this cultural heritage, set deep inside of themselves.

Each year, the finesse of their Art is disclosed to the amateurs at the Grand Moussem Moulay Abdallah where such a universal heritage is presented in its true dimension, but, it is also proposed in falconry initiation workshops, most Gulf

ometimes the choice of doing a satisfying and remunerative job may look like a dream, a challenge or a commitment that in some cases can be risky, have a lucky star or be fortunate enough.

The case of 50 years-old Bernard Bailly, born in the historical and cultural Region of Berry, France, in a happy family, did reflect his future orientation at the end of the school period that was necessary to build himself intellectually.

His story began at the age of 12 when, already captivated by the animal world, he posed for a photo in the company of a seated horse, his dog and a falcon in his hand. From there the design of a career began to loom.

Provided with reasonable skills in horseback riding, one day on a horse ride, Bailly collected from the ground a buzzard that had fallen from the nest, he kept the bird with him because he wanted to breed it, he was also going to train it by doing appropriate readings so to avoid too many mistakes that any beginner like him at the time could make when trying to do it right.

Driven by curiosity, young Bernard Bailly went in search of technical and practical information among falconers who practiced in the hexagon. Later, a more serious involvement in understanding what was happening in the birds of prey industry led him to take into account a job in relation to his ideas.

At the age of 15, with the support of his parents, he bought his first falcon in Germany. As the bird of prey had already been trained by that time, Bailly was then able to practice flight-hunting inside the entire family property, yet, this did not prevent him from completing his classic studies well be-

fore accomplishing his compulsory military service at the time.

Since he did not like to stay idle, Bailly settled down as an agricultural operator and built a rabbit farm, an activity that he chose not by chance, but to keep himself close to the horse, and be able to learn more and more about the Art of falconry that he had previously discovered.

In order to understand more rapidly his personal journey, as he was going through all the basic steps required, Bailly decided to improve his ability to detain raptors, given that this kind of activity was codified by the administration.

His professional career in the area of birds of prey was further consolidated by the following jobs he got in Provins, at the Zoo de la Flèche, and that one at the Zoo d’AmnÊville where he set up an entire bird show by himself.

Currently working at the National Domain of Chambord, Bernard Bailly shows the public all his knowledge on falconry, we must not ignore that his possession of the title of Master Falconer is of huge importance for the Domain.

His deepest desire is now to join in the Arts belonging to mankind, horseback riding and falconry as they all represent values of an ancestral heritage.

However, it will be necessary for him to pass his knowledge and recommendations onto selected pupils with no restraints, which is something quite hard when one is a renowned Master, but, with the passing of time, this becomes an obligation to take action and give back what one has once received from the others.

Travelling around Italy, Europe and the world to celebrate the beauty, the charisma and the versatility of the Arabian Horse is now routine work for Arabian Vibe Srls and his staff of professionals.

In Italy, we are used to following and organizing the most important events on the Italian Show Tour 2019, affiliated to Anica and Ecaho, and conceived by Gianluca Martino. But, most of all, from this year on, we have managed to earn a living space in the framework of a very important showcase like Fieracavalli Verona 2019, given the rich calendar of collateral events that this Fair brings about every year.

This centenary historical event is no longer just a Fair, but a real tradition with the horse at its heart. A catalyst of interests for all horse enthusiasts, particularly, for all the people who recognize themselves in a new way of conceiving life through horses, between sport, leisure, environment and adventure. A unique parterre in Italy, but also in Europe, where amateurs and professionals in the sector meet and get to know each other.

A history and a strong brand that this year was further enhanced by a top class actor in the automotive world such as Volkswagen, main sponsor of Fieracavalli 2019 along with many other partners such as Banco BPM and Cattolica Assicurazioni.

The big news of the 2019 edition can be summed up in two words: ethics and sustainability, both social and environmental. They represent the two cornerstones of Fieracavalli Academy, which is a multidisciplinary project with the aim of spreading an increasingly respectful animal welfare driven culture. The work of the Academy started from afar as an initiative of Veronafiere. Unlike other fairs promoting products such as wine, marble or construction machines, here they proudly host living beings that are also faithful companions in sport, in slow tourism, in everyday life and even in people’s rehab thanks to hippo-therapy.

Fieracavalli Academy is divided into 5 different sectors, each with specific purposes and under the coordination of experts in the field: sport, horse protection, tourism, western and social riding. A final note about the other ‘spirit’ of Fieracavalli: the business. 750 companies from 25 countries joined in the Fair, for a total of 25 thousand net square meters only for the exhibitors. All the most important Made in Italy and international brands of items for horse riding and horse care equipment were there: from stables to clothing, from supplement to veterinary products.

Viaggiare per l’Italia, l’Europa e il mondo intero al fine di celebrare la bellezza, il carisma e la versatilità del Cavallo Arabo è ormai un’attività di routine per Arabian Vibe Srls e il suo staff di professionisti. In Italia, ci siamo abituati a seguire e ad organizzare gli appuntamenti più importanti di morfologia dell’Italian Show Tour 2019, affiliato Anica ed Ecaho, e ideato da Gianluca Martino. Ma, soprattutto, a partire da quest’anno, ci è stato affidato l’incarico di organizzare il Salone del Cavallo Arabo all’interno della prestigiosissima 121° Fieracavalli Verona.

Una storia ed un brand forte a cui quest’anno ha deciso di legarsi un primissimo attore nel panorama dell’automotive come Volkswagen, main sponsor di Fieracavalli 2019, insieme ai tanti altri partner come Banco BPM e Cattolica Assicurazioni.

La grande novità dell’edizione 2019 è racchiusa in due parole: etica e sostenibilità, sia sociale che ambientale.

Un’ ultima annotazione riguarda l’altra anima di Fieracavalli: quella commerciale.

Presenti in fiera 750 aziende da 25 nazioni, per un totale di 25mila metri quadrati espositivi netti. Tutti i più importanti marchi made in Italy e internazionali di articoli e attrezzature per l’equitazione e la cura del cavallo: dalle scuderie, all’abbigliamento, fino a mangimi e prodotti di veterinaria.

highly anticipated Arabian Horse Show - Fieracavalli Verona 2019 ending in overwhelming success, showered with honours and praise; particularly for insiders, it proved to be a much-needed and enjoyable event.

The historical Pavilion 2 at FieraCavalli Verona witnessed the alternation, in the elegant ring, of top quality Arabian horses coming from the most celebrated breeding farms.

In addition to the International Championships, the Egyptian Event, itself an international event, was held along with the Females and Males 2019 Futurity Championships, reserved for the sole European citizens and powered by the European Breeders Trust Association with a prize-pool of Euro 5.000, followed by an Amateur competition, sponsored by Aljassimya Stud from Qatar and reserved for non-professional handlers.

Dulcis in fundo, the Finals of the Italian Show Tour reserved for Arabian horses born and bred in Italy, and a wonderful presentation of stallions complemented with horse selling initiatives and a breeding clinic.

Therefore, we are talking about an impressive’ machine’ that put in place a great deal of activities related to the equestrian world in only four days, with international breeders, world-famed characters including high-profile judges, handlers, investors and representatives of important families from the Middle East.

A mighty ‘machine’, starting from the very location, the romantic city of Verona. We checked on stands and famous brands. Each team some more and some less, of course – built and decorated its own promotional booth to the smallest detail according to thematic areas, with

Verona 2019 - denominato “Arabian Dream” e conclusosi con notevole successo, raccogliendo onori ed elogi. E, per gli addetti ai lavori, l’evento si è già inserito tra gli appuntamenti fissi e imprescindibili del settore.

Lo storico Padiglione 2 di Fieracavalli Verona ha visto alternarsi, sull’accogliente ring predisposto per l’occasione, cavalli purosangue Arabi di alto livello provenienti dalle più blasonate scuderie. Oltre ai Campionati Internazionali, si sono svolti, l’Egyptian Event, anch’esso internazionale; il Campionato Futurity Femmine e Maschi nati nel 2019, riservato ai soli cittadini Europei e sponsorizzato dall’Associazione European Breeders Trust con un montepremi di Euro 5.000 e, infine, una prova Amatori, dove gareggiavano handlers non professionisti, sponsorizzata da Aljassimya Stud dal Qatar.

Dulcis in fundo, si è svolta la Finalissima dell’Italian Show Tour, dove concorrevano cavalli Purosangue Arabi Anica, nati ed allevati in Italia, ed infine una presentazione di stalloni insieme ad iniziative di vendita di cavalli ed un breeding clinic.

Stiamo parlando, dunque, di una ‘macchina’ incredibile che ha racchiuso in una quattro giorni tantissime attività legate al mondo equestre, aziende espositrici e visitatori internazionali, personalità di fama internazionale tra cui giudici di alto profilo, handlers, investitori e rappresentanti di importanti famiglie provenienti dal Medio Oriente. Una ‘macchina’ imponente, a partire dalla location, la romantica città di Verona, passando per stand e brand presenti. Spazi curati e personalizzati nei minimi dettagli da ciascuna scuderia– chi più e chi meno, naturalmente, - aree tematiche e momenti di entertainment per il pubblico presente a nostro avviso incredibili.

Three exclusive evenings with rides, dressage shows, free shows with music, dance, equestrian theatre and lots of good food thanks to the presence of the ‘Assunta Madre’ Restaurant inside the Fair, directed by internationally renowned Chef Franco Bloisi. For all those who, like us, were personally involved in organizing and managing the various morphology competitions, it was a dream that turned into reality ending with unexpected success. We had a great panel of judges in a super mix of international and national. Therefore, glory to: Dr. Vet. STALLIONS PARADE: The Show reached its climax when we saw each of the stallions entering the ring at a majestic, manly pace; announced by the galvanizing voice of Mr. Erik Blaak, all together put up a sensational parade with even greater vigour as they came to a circular close. An extraordinary vision of beauty that stood up in front of the judges for some time and catalyzed the interest of experts in the sector and the public audience. The value of these stallions is immeasurable; it embodies and permeates everything, Present and Future of the entire Italian breeding industry. INTERVIEWED BY SONJA SMALDONE Judging Arabian horses’ conformation takes practice, but anyone who has spent time around these beautiful creatures can learn to do it. Judges usually look for a combination of balance, structure, muscling, gait, and breedspecific features. For the 2020 Dubai edition, I had the honour to interview Mr. Dhari Al Mejhem from Kuwait. He was pleased to walk me through the main aspects of his professional experience in judging Arabian horses.

Hello, Mr. Dhari. Just to set the scene with our readers, give us some background to you, to your family and education please.

My name is Dhari Abdul Mohsin Al-mejhem from Kuwait. I was born on March 3rd 1990, I am the youngest of four siblings, and I graduated from Kuwait University in 2011 with a Degree in Finance.

When did you start getting interested in the purebred Arabian horse?

I first started visiting horse farms with one of my brothers in 1997, I was only 7 years old at the time. As I grew older, I took my passion for Arabian horses more seriously and I literally fell in love with the breed.

When did you become a Judge? What specific preparation did you get?

In 2015, Bait Al Arab - Kuwait State Stud - organized a judging course in which I participated. I was one of the few who passed the course successfully and I got my Degree as a National Judge.

What do you feel has been your most rewarding experience as a judge?

My most rewarding experience as a judge is my participation in Arabian Horse shows all around the world where I have been able to share my thoughts and experience on different breeding programs through my judging at show.

What horse or horses have you judged that have left the greatest impression on you?

In every show I judge, there have always been some interesting and special horses.

I have always spotted some “favorites”, but, at the end of the day, different horses can represent a certain “type” that I like.

What are, in your opinion, the strengths of the breed and how do you tackle the concepts of ‘beauty’ and ‘functional correctness’?

This is a very important question. As a judge you always have to have a certain formula in mind whereby you combine beauty with correctness of the breed. At the same time, lots of aspects in a horse that are considered as beautiful are actually correct.

Which particular skills are necessary to become an accountable judge?

The ability to rank the classes in a show.

Express your thoughts in the marks you give by increasing the range of your marks.

Choosing your good marks based on the positive aspects of the horse, whilst choosing your worst marks based on the negative aspects of the horse.

Combining beauty and correctness when deciding the champion.

At least in Europe there have been many complaints about handlers/ trainers abusing horses. Do you feel these are isolated incidents or do you feel they may be more widespread?

These are isolated incidents of course. Our industry has a lot of professional handlers that are true horsemen.

Do you think that the Arabian World has been a bit in a downtrend lately? Many blame the decline on politics and the cost of showing.

What are your feelings?

In my opinion to enhance the Arabian horse world, we shall concentrate more on National shows to boost breeding programs. Only through good breeding programs, we get good show horses.

If you were empowered to effect change in the Arabian World, how would you go about it?

It is a beautiful world, what we need to do is be creative and innovative with new, sensible ideas as we go.

Do you feel like leaving a message to the readers of this interview or to those who are willing to get to know you better?

I would like to thank you very much for this interview. As I always say, “Love the horse first, everything comes after. And, if you would ever want to be an Arabian horse judge, always keep in mind that only by judging for the well-being of the Arabian horse, you will be able to influence the future of a beautiful breed�.

Prince Sultan Arabian Horse Festival is a celebration of the Arabian Horse and it has been put into operation to uphold and develop the equestrian disciplines in which this extraordinary animal competes. This quality and horse lover ‘paradise’ is held under the patronage of His Royal Highness, Prince Khaled Bin Sultan Bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud. His stud farm is one of the best equipped in the whole of the Gulf area. Stretching over more than 400 hectares, Al Khalediah Stables (AKS), have a fully equipped internal equine clinic in which the experienced and well trained staff has obtained a considerable number of medical successes, ranging from reproduction to embryo management methods.

This state-of-the-art hospital with highly specialized staff is also available to breeders. Prince Khaled’s contagious passion for the Arabian horse has led to the organization of PSAIAHF also this year, it opened its doors from 23rd to 25th January 2020 in the headquarters of His Highness’s farms in Tebrak city, west of Riyadh. Organized by Makshaff Services Ltd, the Festival managed to capture the interest of all the experts and specialists of the breeding industry who all gathered to witness a very well-organized show with a significant attendance of spectators.

CONCLUSION: The 2020 PSAIAHF definitely lived up to the expectations and was truly beyond belief. We would like to congratulate and praise the Organization, Makshaff Services Ltd. led by Event manager Mr. Salah Al Ali (Saudi Arabia) and his assistant /operation manager Mr. Hakim Abdul Subhan (Saudi Arabia) who worked hard on this beautiful event. The Saudi TV made a live broadcast of the show, which was attention-grabbing right until the end of the Final Championship. Also this year the show could be seen live-stream thanks to the presence of Arabian Essence’s staff of professionals; while journalists could do very good thanks to a fully operational modern media center. The Festival was a true gala for Arabian horse enthusiasts – an international event on a grand scale. So, heartfelt thank you to the participating breeders, the appointed judges, the handlers, the disciplinary commissioners, the ringmasters, the photographers along with the many Sponsors that actually supported this impressive show-machine. Exactly, what do you do at Athbah Stud in Riyadh, Qatar?

I’m currently managing all the horses at Athbah Stud in Saudi Arabia. From the paddock horses to the mares-barn and the show-barn to prepare the horses for the competitions. Always together with my fantastic colleagues from Athbah Stud.

You used to be a groom at famous Schoukens Training Center in Maldegem, Belgium. Tell us a bit more about this experience. How relevant has it been to your professional career advancement as a handler?

This was an amazing experience for me. I learned everything I have known till today. While I was working at Schoukens Training Center, I had plenty of important business opportunities. As working for Athbah Stud from Saudi Arabia for the past 8 years.

How and why Danisa Training Centre came about? What’s the main thought behind it?

It was time for me to take up a new challenge in my life. So I decided to start a business with my mother and my girlfriend. At the end of the day, isn’t there a big challenge working together with two ladies and myself being the only man?! (laughter) Which show have you been to as a Handler most recently?

Share with us most exciting moments…

Every show involves big excitement. As on every show you can actually see and realize that all the hard work and effort you put in the training gets rewarded in the end… I have had a lot of exciting moments in my show career. But, the most thrilling one was when I showed Gabel Athbah (Eks Alihandro x Meqbilat Athbah) in Paris at the World Championships 2018. He was crowned World Champion Bronze Junior Colt there!

How important are the Fairs of Arabian horses?

Fairs are very important. To keep the breeding sector alive and to always attract new people!

How and where do you see yourself in ten years?

Still enjoying good health and being able to do what I do the day of today, i.e. working with Arabian horses!

ver since H.H. Sheikha Fatima Bint Hazza Bin Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan opened her eyes to the world, the love for the Arabian horse has been an indispensable part of her and her very first horse was an Arabian.

In mid-February this year she launched and kindly patronised the first edition of the Al Shira’aa Arabian Horse Show which took place from 11th to 14th February at “Al Forsan International Sports Resort” in Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi, UAE. Organized by Al Shiraa Team the Championships witnessed the very best of purebred Arabians from around the world competing for a mind-blowing prizemoney of AED 6.000.000.

Interviewed by Sonja Smaldone A Stable manager oversees the proper care of horses, supervises employees, and maintains buildings and grounds. They may work in many facets of the equine industry. Showing, racing, breeding, and boarding operations generally have a Stable manager to handle the care of the horses and management of employees. For the Dubai issue 2020, I had the honour to interview Mr. Jonas Salzmann from Germany. He was pleased to walk me through the main aspects of his profession as a manager at famous Al Bait Arab state-stud in Kuwait.

Hello Mr. Jonas Salzmann. Just to set the scene with our readers, will you please give us some background to you, your family and education?

I was born in a small city in the North of Germany into a family of horse enthusiasts. Since my childhood I have always been around horses and spent all my free time taking riding lessons in the local riding school and with the horses of my family. After my graduation, it was clear for me that I want to work with horses and not just to spend time with them as a hobby.

When and where did you first meet an Arabian horse? Who was he/she?

I have always been around different breeds of horses, from ponies to warmbloods but it was my cousin who introduced me to Arabian horses when she started to purchase some Straight Egyptian Arabian

horses. My very first own Arabian horse was the Straight Egyptian gelding Sashaan (Machmut x Sabrina IV by Madokur I) whom I got as a weanling in 1996 and who still lives with my family in Germany.

Tell us about early stages of your career inside of the Arabian horse industry.

After I finished with my education, I wanted to learn more about Arabian horses, so I spent some time at Johanna Ullstrom’s Training Center in Belgium to learn more about the training and conditioning of horses. Afterwards, I gained more experience working for some other farms, both in Europe and the Middle East.

When and how did you become stable manager at Bait Al Arab?

In early 2013, I went to Kuwait for the first time and got in contact with Bait Al Arab – Kuwait State stud. Later that year I was offered a job and happily accepted. Finally, in November 2013 I moved to Kuwait and started working for Bait Al Arab. In the meantime, I also became an ECAHO-National judge and started my judging career. I was very privileged to have judged many shows in various different countries, including several countries in Europe, the Middle East as well as Australia within the past years.

What’s Bait Al Arab’s vision and mission in the Arabian horse world industry?

Bait Al Arab is the State Stud of Kuwait and is operating under its General Manager and Assistant Undersecretary of the Amiri Diwan, Sheikha Sarah Fahad Al Sabah. In 2020 Bait Al Arab celebrates its 40th anniversary.

Bait Al Arab has its own Straight Egyptian breeding program to preserve and maintain different strains and families and supports private farms by offering selected breeding stallions. We also run an educational program, including various subjects, such as culture and heritage of the Arabian horse, horse management, judging, handling and veterinary medicine through lectures and exhibitions. Bait Al Arab also organizes and supports National and International Arabian horse shows and manages the records of Purebred Arabian horses in Kuwait through its registry office.

Which bloodlines are mostly bred at Bait Al Arab? Do they own a special collection of mares and stallions?

Bait Al Arab breeds Straight Egyptian Arabian horses with excellent representatives from different strains and families, such as the Dahman Shahwan, Obeyyan, Saqlawieh, Hadban & Koheilan strain. At the moment we have four breeding stallions at stud of which the young home bred Marwan Elkuwait (Ajmal Al Kout x Mesk Elkuwait

by Ansata Hejazi) produced some outstanding foals in his first breeding seasons and will sure make a name for himself as a sire of significance in the Straight Egyptian breeding of today.

How has Bait Al Arab breeding program evolved in the past 5 years? Tell us about most important offspring at stud.

In the past years, Bait Al Arab has used several high-quality stallions to breed to their mares in order to improve the quality of the breeding stock. Stallions like El Thay Khemal Pasha, Ajmal Al Kout, Ajmal Ashhal and Al Adeed Al Shaqab as well as Bait Al Arabs own stallions Ansata Sheikh Halim, Waseem Elkuwait, Marwan Elkuwait and Ghazal Elkuwait produced some outstanding foals which are kept to continue and to secure the Bait Al Arab breeding program.

What are your primary responsibilities and duties as a stable manager in a normal week?

The primary responsibilities of a stable manager are to ensure the proper care of the horses, including the feeding, grooming, training. Supervising the grooms, dealing with suppliers of horse food, hay and any needed material and equipment, discussing latest issues or breeding with the veterinarian as well as organizing visits and presentations for our guests.

Managing the stables of Bait Al Arab with professional standards is more than simply mucking stalls feeding I suppose... What are your priorities for presenting your stables to clients or outside visitors?

Bait Al Arab is hosting many visits and organizes several horse presentations each year. To present the stables in

the best possible way, one must make sure that the facilities, such as stables and paddocks are spotless, the horses in a good condition and well cleaned, groomed and trained. The horses and grooms should trust each other so the presentation of the horses will go in a smooth and quiet manner. Obviously, all the team must work well together to ensure a horse presentation which runs in a great way.

How do you orient a new stable employee who does not have advanced horse skills?

We don’t see hiring a new stable employee without advanced horse skills as a disadvantage for us. From the very first day, the new stable employee will be introduced to our horses and his new duties and will be guided by one of our senior employees. We are very keen on having our employees handling all horses in a soft and respectful manner. The most important thing is that the new employee learns the “horse language” so he can spot easily when a horse is not feeling well or if something is wrong.

What becomes your priority when an important show is approaching?

We don’t usually compete with our horses at shows but when we have important horse presentations for guests, the biggest priority, as always is the team spirit. Only with an excellent team, where everyone knows what to do in the right moment, you can achieve great results.

Jonas, what would you like to achieve by the end of this year?

I hope that we will have another successful year in Bait Al Arab with healthy horses and outstanding new foals. Also, I hope that I will achieve continuing with my judging career this year.

How and where do you see yourself in ten years?

I hope in ten years from now I will still find myself working with Arabian Horses both as a Stable manager as well as ECAHO judge.

Held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nayan, the B- International Championship was governed by the EAHS Rules and Regulations established by the Emirates Arabian Horse Society that for the technical part could rely on the expertise of Show manager Mr. Mohamed Ahmed Al Harbi.

CONCLUSION: The 22nd edition of Abu Dhabi International Arabian Horse Championship was rich and thrilling from every point of view, starting from the large number of high quality horses entered, the beauty of the facility hosting this lovely four-day event, the generous prize money and excellent job done by the Organizers from the Emirates Arabian Horse Society.

Congratulations to the speakers Mrs. Nabila Al Ali and Mr. Abdallah Albarmaki who managed the competitions with a flawless power of speech both in English and Arabic.

I was born in a small town about four hour-drive to East of Prague in the Czech Republic. As a model, I was discovered through a competition that I won in Prague, and that was called “The Elite Look of the Year”.

I moved to Milan, Italy, when I was 15 years old with a contract from Elite Models and I ended up living there for about six years. At the same time, I was travelling to other countries for fashion shoots and red carpet. At age 21, I moved to America and started modeling in New York City and Miami but still travelling to Europe for work.

Today, I live on my Ranch in Palm Beach, Florida, with my own 16 horses, my 3 dogs, a cat and a marmoset monkey called Chi Chi.

I am a huge animal lover and I volunteer with a couple of Animal Charities, but, mainly with a Charity called “Fashion Tails” that uses Celebrities and Models to do photo shoots with Fashion photographers; the aim being to raise money and rescue animals, help them find new homes and create more awareness.

My first experience with horses was in Italy where a good friend of mine had a couple horses that we would go visit and ride.

It was then that I learnt to ride and I got crazy about horses. I would go riding whenever my job would allow me to do it and I wasn’t travelling either. I especially loved to groom the horses and do their manes, even if I didn’t ride that day. Italy is such an amazingly

beautiful place and I got spoiled being able to ride in such landscapes.

Unfortunately, when I moved to America I did not get to ride for a while since I had no horses and lived in big cities with little opportunities to be around horses. It was while I lived in

Miami Beach that I met my current partner who always wanted to have Arabians. I was not so familiar with Arabians but, the first time I met one, I knew they were the only horse for me. So about 6 years ago, my partner and I bought our first horse a very exotic chestnut flaxen Straight

Egyptian filly by Ashtar Dark Ali and a Dalul grand-daughter. We bred her that year to a black True Colours son and she gave us an incredible colt who is now our lead junior stallion and the reason why I love breeding so much. Within two ye-

ars we had acquired six new horses and had four babies. I can say that was when I really knew I was addicted to Arabians.

One of the horses we bought was a young Gazal Al Shaqab son by a daughter of Mostly Padron who took us to our first Halter Event at Region 12 with Ted Carson.

My colt took Reserve Champion in a very large and strong 2-year old class and he eventually

qualified for the US Nationals. It was during this period that I began to ride again and a friend of mine started to teach me how to break my own horses to ride. I am very handson with the Ranch and horses when I am not away for work, and have birthed all my own foals. I ride about 3-4 times a week now, and recently started a local horse riding business with two other ladies. We take people out to the Florida National Parks and Forests and have riding adventures in groups of ten riders!

For the Dubai issue 2020, I had the chance to interview Mr. Federico Lapunzina and his girlfriend Ms. Federica Calistro from Sicily, Italy. They have known each other since 2009. Federico’s massive involvement in Arabian horses takes him to the United Arab Emirates for six-months a year as he works for different Studs down there. He is now in Dubai and his girlfriend constantly goes find him in the genuine homeland of the Arabian horse.

But, I soon realized that she had nothing to do with that. One day, I found Federico right outside my house. I had completely ignored him on the si-te for quite a while.

Hello Federico. Hello Federica. How are you? How and when did you first meet exactly?

What are in your opinion the key elements for a good and long-term relationship today?

Hi Sonja! We are fine thank you.

Federica: We met about 10 years ago, in February 2009. We were so young! I was 15 and Federico 19.

Federico: Actually, we first met by pure chance. I noticed Federica during a Carnival parade, I didn’t know anything about her, neither who she was nor what her name or age was. But, I soon liked her and wanted to get to know her. We live in different to-wns, both very small so it was not difficult to reach her out.

Federico, when and how did you ask Federica to be your girlfriend?

Federico: It has never been there an express request from my side. It all happe-ned spontaneously. I wanted to meet her as I realised that my interest in her was quite strong. We have built our relationship day by day, doing everything with calm and enjoying every single moment. Our relationship has kept growing over-time. At some point, we must have mutually felt that that something was turning in-to a special and much deeper feeling.

Federica, what was your first reaction?

Federica: My first reaction? Well, in one word I just could not believe it! I remem-ber that one day, as I got home from school, I went on a famous social network and found a AHM | 254

We have always thought that trust, mutual respect, honesty and dialogue are the fundamentals of whatever relationship, and such must be never taken for granted if you want that relationship to be a solid and long-lasting one. Especially when two people are brought to face distance as in our case. We now see each other very little and we are forced to cope with time and distance constraints, but, we believe that di-stance got us stronger and brought us even closer in some ways, maybe because the foundation of our relationship is truly solid and sincere.

Federico, we would like to know everything about your lifetime involvement with horses. How did it all start?

My mother and my father always tell me I have been fascinated by horses since I was a kid. Other children would stop in front of toy stores and wanted some; me, I would want to go to the countryside spending hours and hours watching the horses. They would just enthralled me and still do. One of my first gifts was a horse, my first horse: Phryda. She was my adventure mate and my strength in endurance races. With her, I started a journey that brought me even closer to the world of horses, with all the commitment it required. I would look after her, I would take care of her, and, I would train her for first competitions. I have shared most of my childhood and adolescence

with her. Phryda passed away few years ago, and for me, as well as for my family, it was a great loss. Gradually, I started approaching the world of Arabian horses, first as a spectator, then as a protagonist. I also bought my first Arabian horse, a small stallion named Said. Then a mare, Adisha who bore little Jamila.

I got interested in breeding and wanted to train my horses by myself for the small shows that were organized nearby my house. Initially, I did it at an amateur level then at a professional one. This was when my great passion turned out to be my lifetime job.

Federica, to what extent has Federico’s passion for Arabian horses influenced your life? Do you like Arabian horses yourself? Why?

To be honest with you, I had never been interested in horses before I met Federico.

But, I could not say I fully know Federico if I did not know his passion for horses. It is something visceral, overwhelming, spontaneous.

I always get fascinated when I see Federico en-

gage with a horse. The love and dedication he has for these animals is truly special. He is a real horseman, determined and tenacious. I am very sensitive to this. I have become myself a lover of the Arabian horses, it is impossible not to love them, they are so beautiful, expressive, charismatic, elegant. Today, I try to reach out to Federico whenever and wherever it is possible. I strongly believe that sharing things with your ‘other half ’ is very important and I always try to support him, espe-cially before any show or competition he must go to.

Federico, tell us something about most memorable victories and champion horses at beauty competitions.

I started presenting horses in my beautiful country, Sicily.

In 2017, I took part in the show of San Vito Lo Capo where the mare Lady Elisir won gold medal, while Pha-vez (by Imperia) took second place in her class and was crowned silver medal in the final championship.

2018 is a year that I cherish very much because it was full of victories: at Palermo Shi-rhai show, a beautiful black filly won her class and grabbed bronze medal in the final

championship; at Roccalumera show, the mare Kore (by Ashiraf) won gold medal while Shakira De Jeanpaul got silver medal. The beauty and charisma of these two mares encouraged me and their respective owners to participate in the Italian Cham-pionships in Cattolica. This was a great experience as we got top-five with Kore (by Ashiraf), while getting second place with Shakira de Jeanpul.

2019 was unique, full of emotion and satisfaction. At Ambelia show, the Sicilian mare Farah PC got gold medal, while AT Aphrodite was crowned bronze medal winner. After many shows in Europe, and for some years now, I have moved to the United Arab Emirates. My first show on the Arabian circuit was a crucial test for me. I used to cooperate with Aljoharah Stud at the time. In the Straight Egyptians International Championship, the stallion Nasser Fana, son of multi-champion Al Adeed Al Shaqab, won his class getting the highest score and gold medal in the final championship. La-ter, at Abu Dhabi National Championship, I presented a 2-year-old daughter of ES Harir who won gold medal; and the 3-year-old filly Rak Pharida who also won gold medal. The show season in the Emirates is quite long, shows come one after the other in rapid succession, and work gets franzy. However, having the opportunity to work

in the genuine homeland of the purebred Arabian is my biggest luck ever as well as a continuous opportunity for personal growth and professional advancement.

Federica, what do usually do when you are in the United Arab Emirates?

I try to catch up with him whenever I can.

What do I do when I go there? Well, I try to spend with him as much time as possible, we do most things together to recaptu-re all the moments in which we are far apart. I go to work with him, I support him du-ring the shows because I am well aware that it is very important for Federico to see a familiar face in the public; staying away from all the people he loves for many months must be so hard for him. We usually take a lot of pictures when we are together in the United Arab Emirates. We like discovering new things and visiting new places. After all, how not to be curious about and electrocuted by the grandeur and beauty of Du-bai? It is a city that never ceases to amaze me.

Would you like to have any children in the future? Will you educate them to love and respect horses?

We would love to have children. Inshallah, as Arabs say. We will certainly educate them to love and respect animals in general, and, as far as horses are concerned, we believe that it will be almost impossible that our children may not love them. They will breathe the ‘love’for horses. It is inside of the family.

How and where do you see yourselves in ten years?

We still have no ideas about the place though… Whether in Italy or in the United Arab Emirates, what we really hope is to be together as a family.

Federico and Federica, will you please leave one last message for our readers?

An aphorism says that the basis for effective communication between man and horse rests upon trust, respect and connection. Only when these three elements come together, the maximum understanding is fully pursued. Such an aphorism is not so far from describing what the relationship between a man and a woman is. Trust, respect and always be there for the ‘other half ’ is essential. After all, this is the true essence of our relationship.

Whatever his breed, the horse is increasingly closer to man in many rural occupations as well as in various under saddle exercises or pleasure activities whether they are sports-related or not; it is also necessary to highlight his many dispositions for which the horse has long been engaged in the movie industry, in as much epic genre as historical period drama or fiction.

Within that cultural sector everyone can remember the epic historical piece ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ directed by David Lean (1962), which offers - in its own way - a glimpse into the history of Arab peoples in the nineteenth century, at a time when the Bedouin desert tribes were sharing out the territories of the Arabian Peninsula. Or even, the frantic film ‘Or Noir’ directed by Jean Jacques Annaud (2011), which evokes the thorny conflict over oil in the 1930s; in the same vein, we find the ‘Prince of the De-

sert’ directed by Alexandre Dzerdg, (2011) and the ‘Kingdom of Heaven’ directed and produced

by Ridley Scott (2005) with its breath-taking and intense scenes from battles during the Crusades of the 12th century; without forgetting ‘The Oracle’ directed by Philippe Stölz (2016), which tells the story of an English young man, Rob Cole, going to Persia to study with famous Avicenne, the “Prince of Scholars”.

Last but not least, the Egyptian movie ‘Al Mohager’ - The Emigrant – (1995) directed by Youssef Chahine, loosely based on the story of the Biblical Joseph, and ‘Aladdin’ directed by Guy Ritchie (2019), itself based on the eponymous tale from One Thousand and One Nights; all of these Directors, each in his own way, have worked out amazing equestrian images for their movies.

of this particular activity, quite often with robust and very strong horses like Arabians or half- Arabians carrying the distinctive mark of their breed. Those equines are extremely good at fulfilling the many requirements of historical film production, in fact, it is necessary to rely upon experienced professionals who can help artists with horses ready to perform scenes that sometimes may be difficult, but, useful for a realistic historical reconstruction.

Among the greatest professional entertainers in Europe, it is necessary to talk about some of them who are not afraid to take risks for creating breath-taking living images, whereby they manage to surprise and thrill an audience that often has not clue of all the hard work behind it.

With its cavalry consisting of fifty horses, PegaseProd Team has been involved in many films and TV series for more than twenty years; since 2014, the team has installed in Salbris in Sologne (north-central France), yet, not too far from Paris that brings together many Agents.

The weather conditions in this region do encourage the reception of trainees who can attend highly formative stunt double training courses as it has been the case of famous actors such as: Nicole Kidman, Jamie Dorman, Jason Schwartzman, Mads Mikelsen, Bruno, who all have gone there to get the necessary equestrian preparation. Therefore, the place manages to attract many professions that revolve around this particular sector.

In horseback riding, all great riders honour their art with precise and delicate technical gestures. Women are active and stables are very comfortable at ‘Parc Equestre de l’Alméria’, a certain amount of finesse springs from Mrs. Christel Lièvre-Sanabra who is an accomplished aerial stunts horsewoman and highly experienced

classic dresseuse; she could effortlessly be first on many podiums according to experts, but, she is shy and prefers not to participate in shows.

At ‘Parc Equestre de l’Alméria’ shows open to visitors during the winter season; they are extremely accurate and stay true to each represented story like, for instance, Excalibur, which is one of those magnificent live-reconstructions where PegaseProd members got involved with Frederic, Jaime, Pablo and Taïra, all from Sanabra family.

They are the driving force behind its success, without forgetting the funny Franky who is also an essential contributor.

In the summer period, from 4th of April to September, PegaseProd team organizes a colourful show at ‘Domaine de Chambord’ with a glimpse of high Falconry that fits well into the place and the great History of the Kings of France; things that everybody should see once in a lifetime.

The purebred Arabian horse has been a constant presence at both Fairs and Beauty Exhibitions for a long time, particularly, at national and international morphology events or competitions; however, he is also known or used by fans of horseback riding, both in their free time and in sports events of all kinds.

Since the 19th century, the purebred Arabian horse has managed to captivate famous professional animators for his extraordinary versatility in private and in public presentations, most of the times, they are genuine horsemen with a solid equestrian knowledge who are

able to show like few others the beauty of this horse, his extraordinary versatility and surprising aptitude for what it is called the ‘Art of the Circus’: the latter being, in its way, a conservatory of the basics of Dressage and classical Haute-Ecole.

In the 18th century, famous British horseman Philippe Atsley invented a 13-meter circular track where the horse could gallop far better than before and equestrian stunts or free presentations could be performed at their best, also the first female riders could present horses to the public.

It was in the same period, in 1803, that Cirque National Knie was created by Friederich Knie

and his brothers in Rapperswill, Switzerland. They came from a famous family-run business that laid the groundwork for special activities, which continue to exist nowadays through many descendants of these illustrious show creators. As early as 1927, an Arabian horse was wowed and applauded on the occasion of an Haute-School presentation.

Invited by the Responsible of Animations and Competitions of the Salon du Cheval of Paris, Fredy Knie Jr., a true friend of horses, participated in the show; in the late seventies, this would take place at Porte de Versailles with beautiful horses, the Arabians, who surprised the audience, they would organize the International Arabian Horse Days in the same place, however, showing a different use of this fascinating and versatile horse.

With a lot of patience and perseverance, this great horseman put up an “Equestrian Symphony� in 1996 with gray Arabian horses in a free presentation without reinfor-

cement.

This was during the World Festival Circus in Monte Carlo, an equestrian ‘painting’ that showed the immense complicity between man and animal.

At the 2006 edition of this Festival, Fredy Knie Jr. made his appearance again, this time with a collection of the best numbers from previous editions, he once again showed

his great talent as a horse trainer getting his with greys purebred Arabians to fly up and down like in a carousel that stays etched in memory.

A great family cannot disappear, Fredy Knie Jr. passed his love for the horse onto his nephew Ivan Frederic Knie who, at age 20, embodies the eighth generation, he already has the qualities of a great show-professional performer in the arenas.

For them, he enjoys showing his white Arabian horses, in turn loose, in groups or individually, his performances at the 44th Monte Carlo Circus Festival in January 2020 got

him a Gold Clown awarded by Her Highness Princess Stephanie of Monaco, President of the prestigious event.

Created in 1974 by Prince Rainier III of Monaco, and held every year under “Espace

Fontvieille” big tent, the International Circus Festival of Monte Carlo is seen by professionals as the most prestigious global event, as important as “The Oscars” in the Cinema industry, the Gold Clown is the most coveted prize within this Circus Art. Its main theme can be said mankind’s greatest accomplishment and it was put at the heart of the 44th edition, there, the purebred Arabian horse occupied a place of honor.

afał Walendowski is a talented artist from Poland and he works at Forest Museum in Forest Culture Center in Gołuchów, a picturesque village in Pleszew County, Greater Poland. For years, he has been, and still is, a great lover of Arabian horses whose astonishing beauty he manages to depict and immortalize in drawings and paintings. Watercolor is his favorite painting technique. Taking photos is his second great passion. So, let’s go find out more about him.

Hello Rafal. Just to set the scene for our readers, will you please share with us some background to you, your family, and current work at ‘Forest Museum in Forest Culture Center’?

I have been living in the picturesque town of Gołuchów, Greater Poland, for 43 years. The place is beautiful, full of greenery and historical monuments. I have been working as an artist at Forest Culture Center in the Museum department for 21 years. Organizing exhibitions and designing publications for the Forestry Museum is my main task. I am very happy with my job; it brings me a lot of satisfactions.

I have my own family with my wife Monika and our two daughters: Zosia and Marysia.

Can you talk a little about your formative years as an artist? Have you been trained, and if so from what Institution? Or are you self-taught For 5 years I have been studying at University with a major in Fine Arts. I attended the Faculty of Plastic Education in Kalisz, which is a branch of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan. I gained skills in painting, graphics, sculpture and graphic design. In addition, I also got teaching qualifications, but I have never really worked at school. I work more at home, drawing and painting a lot.

How did you first get into painting? How would you describe your painting style?

I started painting since an early age, I have been very passionate about horse drawing and painting. This is my greatest source of inspiration. I have also been interested in History of Art for years, especially in Realistic painting. My favorite masters are: Juliusz Kossak, Józef Chełmoński, Ludwik Maciąg, Andrzej Patter, Andrzej Novak-Zempliński plus many other horse and landscape painters. I would describe my style as realistic and my favorite techniques are watercolor and pastel.

Tell us more about this passion for the Arabian horse. When and where did you first meet an Arabian horse? Why is it your favorite subject to paint?

I first saw Arabian horses in the Magazine “Polish Horse”. It used to publish beautiful photos by Zofia Raczkowska, Marian Gadzalski and Urszula Sawicka. First time I could see Arabians by close it was in 1997 at Janów Podlaski Stud. Later, I visited more state studs such as those in Michałów and Białka and,

to this day, I have very good contacts with private breeders of Arabian horses such as: Marcin Witek from Krotoszyn and the Polia Arabians Stud. I was thrilled by their unique beauty and grace, and watching them in motion made me feel “dizzy”. So it could not be otherwise, Arabians had to become the leitmotif of my artistry for life.

Is there someone special who has encouraged your work as an artist? If yes, tell us about this person and how they have influenced your path as an artist?

This person is Józef Witkowski for sure. He was former visual artist at Forest Culture Center in Gołuchów and an amateur painter who ran an Art Club for children where I could learn new interesting art techniques.

In the past few years, I have mainly been influenced by artists - educators from my university such as: Prof.

Andrzej Niekrasz, Prof. Andrzej Nawrot and Jan Krzysztof Hrycek. Very important to me was the person of Prof. Ludwik Maciąg, an excellent horse painter with whom I had the pleasure to work outdoors at the Arabian horse stud in Korfowe.

Which painters do you most often use for reference? Why? I really like the artworks by Prof. Ludwik Maciąg, Andrzej Patter, Andrzej Novak - Zempliński, Zbigniew Kotowski and Bogusław Luśtyk. I am fascinated by their workshops and the end result in the form of excellent artworks.

What is your favorite genre of music to listen to while painting?

When I paint, I really like listening to Marillion, but also Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Eric Clapton and Neil Young.

If you could meet any artist who is no longer living, who would it be and why?

Unfortunately, my master and Professor Ludwik Maciąg passed away 13 years ago. I went to Korfowe Arabians with him my very first time, and we would go to Arabian horse championships together.

Do you have any upcoming exhibitions or collaborations?

I have had many solo and group exhibitions in my artistic career. My last exhibition featured my own horse photography collection that took place in March 2019 at Forestry Museum in Gołuchów.

What are your hopes and dreams or future goals, where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?

My biggest dream is to have my own Arabian horse. As an Artist, I would love to create a coherent and valuable collection of Arabian horse paintings.

In ten years, I hope I will be an accomplished artist, and a happy man inside a happy family!

arine Oussedik is an extraordinary woman artist who graduates from the College of Graphic Arts in Paris. She has a meteoric rise since her talent in Design and Sculpture is out-of-ordinary. A true horsewoman herself from a very young age, she is very keen on dressage that she practices on a daily basis with her two horses in her domain in Picardie. Depending on the desirable natural light, she is able to accommodate a precious balance between horse riding, drawing and sculpture. Marine is particularly concerned with representing the distinctive features of the hawks, without forgetting the Arabian horse that in her art-works is portrayed in striking scenes of intense reality.

In the nineties, Marine organises a first exhibition of ink drawings in the famous ‘Galerie La Cymaise’ in Paris that houses the greatest contemporary animal artists. It follows a very beautiful exhibition in one of the most beautiful rooms of the ‘Musée Vivant du Cheval’ installed at the Castle of Chantilly. Her artistic presence gets stronger following her first Art Book in 1993 titled ‘Les Chevaux d’Encres’ (The Ink Horses) accompanied by ad hoc oriental texts and proverbs that allude to her Kabyles origins. This Book remains today out of print, unfortunately, and it has not been yet re-issued despite high demand.

Her delicate artistry makes her very famous, she is asked to exhibit her art-works worldwide: Antwerp-Belgium, Brussels-Belgium, Lausanne-Switzerland, London-England, Shanghai-China, Seoul-South Korea; while in the United Arab Emirates her work is considered as a property to be preserved for the future.

Following urgent requests, Marine engages in the re-edition of ‘Les Chevaux du Sahara’ (Horses of the Sahara) in the little time she has left to produce new creations. This outstanding piece of art-work is carefully placed on the shelves of the ‘Institut du Monde Arabe’ in Paris. In the same period, she publishes her book ‘Horses of the Wind, Birds with no Wings’ followed by many works on Horses and the Living Art in the Middle East, while ‘Les Chevaux de Rois’ has an unprecedented success.

Nowadays, Marine Oussedik receives many requests to show her un-

deniable artistic talent at prestigious events and fairs around the world. Her constant research for producing new designs and paintings forces her to stay focussed on her work for all the necessary time she needs to put down her creativity. No doubt, her new works will delight all big lovers of the art of painting, especially when it refers to Orientalism and its millennial traditions.
