COMMENTS from the publisher

ONE FOR ALL IN 2023

The new year is always a good time for making resolutions, for giving ourselves permission to start anew in pursuing the goals that matter to us. Hopefully when we do that, we’ll take the opportunity to discard habits that haven’t worked well for us in the past and focus on the ones that have. For as long as I can remember, the Arabian horse and its community have been family to me, and their welfare is among the things most important in my life. This year my resolutions include how I want to act in working toward our breed’s future. If that’s been on your mind too—as I know it has been for many of us—then I invite you to join me. Here are my thoughts.

Like many others, longtime breed participants and those who have come in more recently, I routinely see things that need to be improved in our industry and often speak out. I believe that there are many ways we can do our part to brighten the future for our horses, not just through our governing body. Together, however, we can be a force for change. We can’t help coming from our own perspectives; we’re human. But can we learn to think more in terms of what benefits everyone? I’m going to make a bigger effort than ever and I’m hoping that many of us will.

So, to improve things industry-wide, the most obvious path is to work with the Arabian Horse Association, and I am encouraged by their recent efforts in providing a Marketing Toolkit. An A-Z guide with helpful templates, brochures, ideas and more for clubs and individuals who want to attract new people to the Arabian horse, it serves our community as a whole.

Building on that, since we want to be heard by our governing body, let’s use the official channels. Let’s ask ourselves if we’ve attempted to be involved in making things better. Each of us should get to know who our regional director and delegates are, volunteer in any capacity we are able, and when we have suggestions, supportive or critical, share our thoughts and opinions with them and do the work for change.

“Working for change,” of course, also includes doing our part in other avenues. One that I recommend is the Keystone Charity Arabian Horse Experience (if you aren’t familiar with it, check it out online at arabianhorsepromotionalfund.com/keystone-experience, which features an excellent video detailing how comprehensive it was at the AHAF Ocala Thanksgiving Show). It has unlimited potential to promote the Arabian horse to newcomers, and you’ll see it next at Scottsdale. Just consider what we can achieve, with the mega-crowds in attendance there! It takes a lot of volunteers to put on, and there are roles for everyone from big barns to small, professional horseman to utility volunteer.

There are so many ways that we can all help, either officially through AHA, regional or local clubs, or start-up efforts with other enthusiasts. What is important is that we step up and do our part. One thing is sure: we all love the Arabian horse, so when we improve the breed’s future for everyone, “everyone” includes all of us.

Tranquility™ is formulated to help horses that exhibit extreme signs of nervousness, anxiety, apprehension, lack of focus, and aggression in stressful situations. The active ingredients encourage the brain to boost levels of serotonin in order to promote a feeling of wellbeing and calm in some horses.

Tranquility™ supports mental focus during training and competition. This may help the horse to concentrate on the task at hand rather than be distracted by outside factors.

Tranquility™ is also suggested for horses in rehabilitation, injured horses on stall rest or horses that stall walk, weave or crib. This supplement encourages a relaxed mental attitude, which may reduce the mental stress of confinement.

The Preventative Care Kit was designed by Dr. DePaolo to provide the most effective nutraceutical supplements that will allow your horse to continue performing at its best. Horses are exposed to significant stress during training, trailoring, competing and medical procedures. This Kit will help supplement your horse’s digestive system, joints, and immune system.

Excel™, with its combination of natural ingredients, encourages overall digestive health and allows for increased absorption of needed nutrients. It is a great tool at shows to keep the digestive tract from becoming overly acidic.

HyalONE® provides a proper equine dose of Hyaluronic Acid to promote overall joint health. This 250mg per dose formula may significantly help in the lubrication and maintenance of healthy cartilage and connective tissue. It is able to bring extra water to any part of the body, supporting hydration and lubrication of those areas.

L-Lysine is an essential amino acid that is a critical building block for all protein in the body. It also supports the production of hormones, enzymes and antibodies helping to boost your horse’s immune response.

Excel™ helps to soothe the entire digestive system (esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines and the colon), which aides in lessening the discomforts of digestive issues.

Veterinarians who study ulcers say that nearly 90% of our horses have and suffer from gastrointestinal ulceration. Some symptoms associated with gastrointestinal distress are: ulcers, weight loss, diarrhea, body soreness (especially over the low back/lumbar area), cribbing, sensitivity over the sides (especially over the last rib), and the most common symptom is cinchy or girthy horses. Anxiousness, anger, defensiveness, dead sided, weaving, stall walking, and teeth grinding are also symptoms of ulcers that reoccur.

Excel™ is an all-natural digestive health supplement that is fed daily. It may be used long term without the possible build up of aluminum, found in daily antacids, which may create a metal toxicity. It is mixed with alfalfa and brewer’s yeast to make it more palatable to the horse.

xcel is beneficial for the entire digestive system. t aides in lessening the discomfort from gastric upset and promotes the healing of ulcerated tissues. The combination of natural ingredients encourages overall digestive health and allows for increased absorption of needed nutrients.

2022 AEPA Spotlights

AMERICA’S MOST THRILLING

Arabian and Half-Arabian English Pleasure Horses

There’s no denying the amazing staying power of the top Arabian sires of English Arabian horses in America today. At 20 years of age, the leading AEPA sire is Afires Heir, son of Afire Bey V, bred by Marty Shea and now owned (since last August) by Joseph Kinnarney. Joe won the inaugural 2007 AEPA Championship with Sin City (by Baske Afire) and was 2022 Leading AEPA Owner by payout ($111,000). Afires Heir has been the Leading AEPA Sire seven times, more than any other Arabian stallion.

Ritida with Tim & Marty Shea

All-time Leading Breeders of AEPA winners to date is Maroon Fire Arabians, Inc. Their partners, Marty and Tim Shea are second and tied in numbers at 20 winners each, respectively. By payout and by points they are also first and second.

Seven years after his passing, Maroon Fire Arabians’ legendary sire, Afire Bey V continues to exert an extraordinary influence at the National shows in America. Many of his immediate sons and daughters still compete regularly in National competition and bring home impressive numbers of national championships and reserves. Afire Bey V grandget and great grandget currently almost completely dominate the Arabian English show ring. Of the 2022 AEPA Leading Sires, after the number one Afire Bey V son Afires Heir, those remaining on the list, Black Daniels (a son of IXL Noble Express+ [also a Maroon Fire Arabians stallion]), and the balance of the top listings including SF Aftershoc, HA Toskcan Sun, VJ Royal Heir and Prosuasion . . . all are Afire Bey V grandsons.

Dave and Gail Liniger of Maroon Fire Arabians and Marty and Tim Shea of Shea Stables were also represented by many winning horses owned or bred by them at the 2022 Youth, Mid Summer and U.S. National Championship shows. These national winners accumulated 14 National Championships, 13 Reserve National Championships and 129 Top Ten awards. Of the farm’s many great broodmares, 29 were represented at the 2022 National Championship shows, 11 with two or more national winning offspring to their credit. Stellar examples

included broodmares LBC Nobelinda with five winning get shown this year, Rimone GW with three, and the amazing Dutch Harness mare, Ritida with eight sons and daughters among the winners, half of them claiming one or more national championships.

Of this year’s 20 AEPA English Pleasure Arabian and Half-Arabian winners, all the purebreds and well over half of the Half-Arabians had Afire Bey V and/or IXL Noble Express+ represented in their pedigrees. Now, the Maroon Fire Arabians’ junior sire, Inception (IXL Noble Express+ x Bonita Afire, by Afire Bey V) has joined his illustrious sire and grandsire as both a four-time National Champion (unanimously) and as a sire. His first (2018), second (2019) and third (2020) foal crops are making their initial, successful forays in the national arenas. In 2022 Inception had four get win seven national awards. RGT Rubberband Man (x RGT Glory Days), bred by Rick and Laura Gault and owned by Stephanie Roberts, won three top tens at two national shows and was a National Champion at the 2022 Youth and Mid Summer National Championships. And Bourbon Street SHF (x Merry Magnifire, by VCP Magnifire), owned and bred by Tom and Elizabeth Moore, was 2022 U.S. Reserve National Champion in the English Pleasure Futurity. Other top ten national winners included KT Square One (x Completely By Surprize), bred by Joel and Ashton Kiesner and owned by Texie Lowery, and In Quest (x Quintara Afire, by Afire Bey V), bred by Maroon Fire Arabians and owned by Shan and Molly Wilson and Chris Courtney. n

Mamage x KW Sapphire, by Baske Afire Proudly owned by Franklin Farm, LLC 2022 Colt (KW Micah x DD My Dance) Owned by Joel & Ashton Kiesner
Arabian Horse Times | 9 | A.E.P.A Futurity

Take A res Heir, for example.

He already owns a perfec show record. Not just accomplished, but perfect: four straight U.S. National Championships in English Pleasure (one in junior competition, three in open), all unanimous. Two championships at Scottsdale, unanimous. He never entered the ring that he didn’t win, and if there was more than one judge, they all agreed on his excellence.

Add in his career as a sire, which has inspired English enthusiasts to predict that he might replicate *Bask’s in uence in the discipline. It has not been unusual to see his sons and daughters make up as much as half of a championship line-up, and in AEPA competition alone, he has sired 58 titlists to date. In the last 10 years, his youngsters have won the AHT $100,000 Saddle Seat Futurity six times, and in both 2016 and 2021, one was champion and another reserve. Perhaps more importantly, most of his get have continued to build their resumes, accounting for U.S.

National Championships in nearly all of the English divisions, several topping the prestigious open competition.

And as if all that weren’t enough, he’s happy in the environment he has known since 2004 at Kiesner Training Center, where everyone knows him.

So what do you get for a horse like that? When his longtime owners, Bill and Shirley Reilich, made him available, only a new owner. And from the stallion’s point of view, it would be nice if it were one already “in the family,” so that he might not be ru ed by a change in his routine. He didn’t have to look far. One of his biggest fans was already a barn client and a friend, someone he’s known since he arrived. From the beginning, breeder and exhibitor Dr. Joe Kinnarney responded not only to the formidable reputation the stallion developed, but also to him personally, to the critical mix of talent and willing personality that made him who he was. Kinnarney has had several A res Heir’s o spring in his program, elding such national champions as Sin City, Futurama, Enchanted Heir, Movin On Heir WA, and most recently, KT Heir Lord. Generally, they start with Joel Kiesner, and when they are ready, Joe rides or drives them. And there are more growing up out in the pasture, as well as three of the stallion’s daughters in his broodmare band.

Arabian Horse Times | 11 | A.E.P.A Futurity
Fast forward 17 years, from a 3-year-old A res Heir (le ), and countless achievements, to a re ective moment (above) with new owner and lifetime fan, Dr. Joe Kinnarney.

So it seemed appropriate that given the chance to own A res Heir himself, Kinnarney was front and center. It was, he says, a natural result of his own history in the breed. “I’ve been in Arabians since as far back as the 1970s,” he re ects. “I remember when *Bask was the most in uential horse in the breed, and so now, to own a stallion with that stature is very special.”

One of the keys to success for “Captain,” as A res Heir is known around the barn, is his user-friendly personality. Despite all the awards, Joel observes that the stallion’s greatest legacy may be how happy he has made people, and as a signature achievement, that is as valuable as his electric, exciting show ring persona. “He has sired so many show horses that people have exhibited successfully and enjoyably,” Kiesner observes. “ at is a contribution in itself.”

Perhaps the stallion’s biggest challenge is reproducing a son as good as he is, but with several national champion sons on the ground, his team enjoys looking forward to the future. Already he has a daughter writing history. Heirs Noble Love’s show record, with ten national championships (four in open English Pleasure) is even more stellar than her sire’s, and her breeding career looks like a capsule version of his, with a growing list of nationally decorated

progeny, which reveals an intriguing fact: A res Heir daughters are being seen o en now as the dams of some of the English division’s top competitors, a rare and valuable attribute for a stallion. Astute horsemen o en point out that as incandescent as a top sire is, o en supplying the brilliance in his get, it is the dam line that anchors a pedigree. Characteristically thorough, Captain has both sides covered.

Now there is a special appreciation in the air when he is in the barn. “I’ve always had a relationship with him,” Joe says. “I don’t think he knows the change, but I certainly do. To have this great horse who made so many of my dreams come true, and to be able to do that for others, was one of the thoughts [when I bought him].” It won’t change his breeding strategy, he adds; he’s already been using the stallion for years. But it is de nitely a new chapter in his life. “We’ll move on together, and I think it will be fun for all of us.” u

Check out the photo of Prosuaded By Love’s victory pass in the 2022 AEPA $100,000 Saddle Seat Futurity, and the rst thing you notice may not be his elevated trot or rhythmic high hocks—although both are pretty close to a 10 on the scale of English performance. Instead, what you see rst is the kind, con dent expression in his eyes. He’s enjoying his triumphal procession out of the ring. It’s not arrogance; he just knows he’s good, and even the demanding class has not dented his delight at showing o .

For those who observed him as a foal, the image just reconrms what he told them then. Owner/breeder Karlton Jackson remembers that moment as if it were yesterday. “Most of the foals, when I see them at a week or a month old, are so timid that they don’t want to get more than a few feet from their surrogate mother,” he says, adding that in his small breeding program, they breed via embryo transfer. “ e rst time we all saw him, instead of staying close to the mare, he got 10 or 15 feet away and looked around as if to say, ‘there is a big, wide, wonderful world out there.’ He started trotting around the mare, and then stopped, with a perfect pose sideways, and looked around as if to say, ‘Hey, look at me! I’m something special.’ He just had that attitude of ‘I’m special and I know it and everyone else should too.’”

Jackson (About Prosuaded by Love)

Already the colt’s pedigree told the story: by Prosuasion (winner of six national championships in the English division) and out of Heirs Noble Love (who accounted for 10), he comes with gilt-edged English bloodlines. And he exhibits the willing demeanor o en seen when a horse nds that doing his job comes easily. “He’s an all-around good guy,” trainer Joel Kiesner reports. “We bred him only once the rst year because we didn’t want to interfere with his showing, but he handled it so well that we have a few more due for next year.”

Even Joel, who rarely watches videos of his classes because he over-analyzes the slightest mistake, was impressed when he saw the one of the futurity. All along, he’s seen Prosuaded By Love—“Karlton,” as he’s known in the barn—consistently improving, but this time he had to be impressed with how well the young stallion was putting himself together.

He’s quite simply extraordinary. He has the best timing and cadence of any purebred Arabian I’ve ridden. e balance of his motion, front to back, is extremely rare—in a good way.

“He’s quite simply extraordinary,” Kiesner says. “He has the best timing and cadence of any purebred Arabian I’ve ridden. e balance of his motion, front to back, is extremely rare—in a good way. So, his legs work beautifully, and his neck does too. On top of that, he has a beauty and an intense look from his eyes and ears that is charismatic like only a handful of horses I’ve ever seen.”

It’s easy to trace the champion’s athletic ability in his pedigree; his attitude, however, is also part of the package. Karlton Jackson, who bred Heirs Noble Love, prioritizes a good temperament in his horses; he got into Arabians when his daughters showed them as junior riders, and began breeding when they aged out. “One reason we wanted to show Heirs Noble Love in amateur was to demonstrate that it doesn’t take a Joel Kiesner to ride that bloodline,” he says.

“And we were thrilled when our co-owner, Emily Shippee, teamed up with her [in 2020 and 2022]—the world could see that her star shone as brightly as ever.

~ Joel Kiesner (About Prosuaded by Love)

I think Prosuaded By Love is going to be a good example of that, and he could pass it along as a sire.”

at in uence, both he and Joel say, relates not only to A res Heir, but also to EA Aphroditie, who became the foundation mare for the Jackson program and has since been designated an Arabian Horse Times Dam of Excellence. She too was kind; her barn name at Kiesner Training Center, where she lived until she passed away recently, was “Abuela,” Spanish for “Grandma.”

Abuela’s great-grandson, Prosuaded By Love, represents the fourth generation in his owner’s contribution to the Arabian breed. Having won the 2021 U.S. National Championship in the English Pleasure Futurity, and the 2022 AEPA futurity, he now will face his biggest challenge yet, as he graduates into the open ranks.

“He was everything we hoped he would be this year,” Jackson re ects. “He still has things to learn and more growth to come as a show horse, but he’s what we’re working for with the whole breeding program.”

Joel Kiesner agrees. “He’s an all-around great horse, and he’s just coming into his own. I can’t wait to see his babies—if he passes himself on, we are in for a treat!” u

THE ARABIAN ENGLISH

PERFORMANCE ASSOCIATION

with Peter Conway

This year’s AEPA classes at U.S. Nationals were without question, the deepest ever. All of us can be proud of what the AEPA has accomplished. I believe the unique educational opportunity that the pattern class offers, to watch horses individually, and see how their pedigrees have come together, has made better breeders of us all.

The passion that we all share for the Arabian horse fulfills us. The joys, and sometimes the heartaches, enrich us. They provide the common bond that forms our community. Each of us must do what we can to preserve and hopefully expand the opportunity for others to join.

The AEPA was founded to promote the Arabian English horse, to ensure the continuation and appreciation of these magnificent animals. Bring your passion forward again this year and purchase a breeding in the AEPA auction.

Special thanks to Arabian Horse Times and Equine Athlete Veterinary Services, for supporting our Nationals classes, and to Strawberry Banks Farm and Conway Arabians, for their support of the Keystone ProAM and Scottsdale Maturity.

Most of all, THANK YOU, to every stallion owner that donates a breeding, and every breeder that buys one in the auction. It is your love of the Arabian English horse that makes this all possible.

Remember that …

A donated breeding makes every foal sired this year by your stallion eligible for every AEPA class. No nomination fess, no forms to fill out. Every foal is automatically enrolled. (Auction foals must be enrolled in utero to receive the extra prize money) Foals that are enrolled as Auction breedings receive an extra 25% on all winnings in the U.S. Nationals AEPA purebred or Half-Arabian Futurity.

Created to serve breeders and to promote the Arabian English performance horse, get involved, breed wonderful horses, enjoy the competition, and have these horses in your life!

LEADING A PARADE OF CHAMPIONS

Cal Poly Pomona has a legendary, decades-old Arabian horse breeding program that has produced scores of national winners. Ivan Osorio gives Chris Wilson the credit for letting him know that Cal Poly was auctioning off a nice Vegaz daughter, CP Viva Vegaz, in foal to CSP Grand Caymon, a son of nine-time National Champion English and Park Horse, Mamage. Ivan and his wife Sheryl were excited about the potential of the unborn foal. The pedigree promised performance ability, and, if the resulting foal was stallion quality, could provide the next level for the Aspire Arabians breeding program.

When Viva Vegaz foaled, Grand Marshall AA was everything they had hoped for. Ivan considers him to be “an impressive stallion, with very good size and type, who bridles up beautifully.” Sheryl recalls that it took a special touch to help the horse blossom. “As a young colt, he was afraid of the world!” she relates. “We knew he had a lot of potential, and that he needed to grow with gentle hands.” They selected Jon Ramsay, who operates the training barn at Stachowski California.

Arabian Horse Times | 126 | Volume 53, No. 1

“I fell in love with Grand Marshall at first sight,” admits Jon. “He has all the right parts and is a naturally gifted mover. He has a great mind and is a pleasure to be around. And he is a unique horse and has a pedigree that will contribute to improving the gene pool.” Grand Marshall is fifth-generation Cal Poly breeding and boasts six crosses to the immortal Bask, with a parade of 15 U.S. National Champion or Reserve winners in his first five generations.

Jon had Grand Marshall in his care for a little over a year before the pair roared to victory as the 2022 United States National Champions in the English Pleasure Futurity. It was a sensational debut on the national stage and a resounding endorsement of the Aspire program. “It was a pleasure to see him perform,” Ivan enthuses. “They are a great pair. Jon really understands horses, and he and Grand Marshall have a good relationship. That is very important to us.”

When Ivan and Sheryl first became involved with Arabian horses in 2015, they chose beautiful foundation stock blessed with outstanding performance ability. When they bought their Afire Bey V daughter Flirtacious Fire PF, she already had a United States Reserve National Champion English Pleasure Futurity title among her numerous honors. Two years later, she earned a unanimous 2017 U.S. National championship in Ladies Side Saddle English for Aspire.

In 2016, the Osorios added another Afire Bey V daughter, Becca Afire, who has earned three top tens of her own in Country English Pleasure and Side Saddle. Both mares will produce foals by Grand Marshall AA. “We see Grand Marshall as somewhat of an outcross for the Afire Bey V mares,” Ivan continues. “That is why we are breeding two of our best to him. We think he can help expand the genetic pool for performance that has become highly concentrated.”

After his stunning win in Tulsa, Grand Marshall is spending the winter with Jon Ramsay in California. “We will work on getting him broke to drive,” says Jon. “Then, we’ll come back with him next year in Junior Horse.” Meanwhile, Ivan and Sheryl Osorio will look forward to welcoming the Grand Marshall babies, the next generation in their parade of champions.■

Farewell To One Of The Great Ones

When describing Rose as wild, we really mean feral, as we were never able to physically touch her. When Rosanna was born, her talent was apparent but as she matured, the questions and statements regarding her future were not promising from the outside world. “What are you going to do with that?” “She’s too small.” “She will never amount to anything under saddle.” Those were just a few of the criticisms that we heard over and over. However, we knew there was something special within her that would defy all the odds.

Thankfully, esteemed trainer Tish Kondas was more than willing to give Rosanna the shot we all felt she deserved, and it was not long before Tish called us to eagerly cement a plan to campaign her for the Half-Arabian English Pleasure Junior Horse division in 2006. She won her cut at Louisville that year, and she made an unforgettable performance in the final to win Reserve National Champion in a tremendously deep class. To this day, people still remember and recount her flawless performance that night in Freedom Hall. For the Bandy family, it was the thrill of a lifetime for an owner/breeder.

Her success continued, with a Reserve National Championship in driving at U.S. Nationals the following year, and a top three finish in H/A Park Horse at U.S. Nationals in 2008. Colleen Boylan then took the reins and guided Rosanna to a U.S. National Championship in H/A Park Horse AAOTR in 2009. It was then that we knew Rosanna deserved an early retirement. She had already accomplished so much, and she earned her time to have foals and become a super boss mare.

WP Rosanna Orana proved two major things about Wiloma’s breeding program:

1) Crabbet breeding is still relevant and can greatly contribute to excellence in the English/Park show ring.

2) Hackney Pony crosses can be exceptionally competitive in the HalfArabian division, especially through a stronger, more consistent hind end.

To Rosanna, our farm and our lives will never be the same without you. You were tremendously loved, regardless of all your amazing accomplishments. Not only were you an English/Park legend, you were a loving mother and a beloved friend. Your daughter, WP Little Black Dress, is almost an identical version of you, and we are so excited to see what she will be able to accomplish. Watching her go 4th at the 2022 U.S. Nationals in H/A Park brought back amazing memories of you. Your legacy will live on. To quote the song on your beautiful victory pass in 2006, “you were SIMPLY THE BEST.”

Sired by the *Oran Van Crabbet son Oran Van Bandy, Rosanna was the combination of rare Crabbet breeding combined with a wild grade Hackney Pony that the Bandy’s acquired and simply called Rose.

“My heart is filled with so many emotions as I write about the loss of WP Rosanna Orana … my eyes well up with tears filled with sadness, pride, gratitude, and elation! Words cannot truly convey what Rosanna meant to me as a trainer or what the Bandys meant as the owners/breeders who believed in me the way they did.

The butterflies that mare gave me and the excitement she brought to the crowd was off the charts! She was small but showed like she was 16h with no quit in her… EVER! Being named Reserve National Champion in the H/A English Pleasure Jr. Horse to Adams Fire was incredible. BUT the way the crowd went to their feet over those two horses was a night I will never forget! Coming back the next year to be Reserve National Champion in the H/A Pleasure Driving and then to train her for Colleen Cooper to become U.S. National Champion Park AOTR was just icing on the cake! There will never be another like Rosanna!

Thank you, Vicki Humphrey, for your support with her over the years… and suggesting we bring back the four-wheel show buggy that year… she was a sight that night! To Rachel, David, and Cindy, thank you for believing in me and trusting me with this special mare! I can replay every step of these wins with her in my mind… not forgetting all the hours it took me to teach her to canter, LOL! She will be missed but NEVER forgotten! RIP Boss Mare!

Rosanna had the guts of a warrior and the pretty of a princess!”

—Tish Kondas, Showtime Training Center

THE ROLE OF IN ARABIAN HORSE MARKETING Auctions

Call John Lambert at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) about a horse that’s for sale in an upcoming Cal Poly auction and be prepared to spend an hour on the phone. “I’m going to ask questions about what you want to use the horse for. I’m going to ask questions about your trainer. Based on what you tell me, I might even recommend a horse that you aren’t even asking about. Not every horse ts every rider. Not every horse ts every trainer. I want to take the time to be sure it’s a good match.”

John’s commitment to not just making a sale, but making a match is part of what has fueled the success of the Cal Poly auctions since he started as head trainer (he’s now executive director) of the Cal Poly Arabian program in 2015. “When I rst came here, the horses were sold through private treaty. But the decision was made to move to an auction system and that made sense due to the horses being state property.”

Since then, Cal Poly has had six auctions with 98 horses having been sold. e most recent was in November, following U.S. Nationals in which nine horses were sold for prices ranging from $3,500 to $100,000. “One of the things I’ve learned through the years is that to make the auctions successful, it’s helpful to time them near shows,” he says. “I go to the big shows, talk to the trainers, tell them about the horses in the auction and nd out what people might be looking for,” he says.

While the Cal Poly auctions are ourishing, John thinks the industry as a whole can do a better job of making all auctions just as successful. “ e public is very smart and you aren’t going to hide anything from them,” he says. “If there’s something wrong with a horse, disclose it. e buyer is going to nd out within 24 hours that you didn’t represent the horse properly. We need to have more auctions and they need to be viewed as a means to buy high quality horses that t a multitude of buyers. Auctions shouldn’t be viewed as a way to nd deals, but a way to nd matches that may be all the way across the country. If we represent these horses well enough and provide enough information, there isn’t a need for the potential buyer to come see the horse in person. I’m seeing the horse in person for them. And if I’m being transparent, honest and I’m disclosing everything I know about that horse, then I’m doing the horse and the buyer a service.”

Arabian Horse Times | 138 | Volume 53, No. 1

John would like to see auctions take on a more important role in the Arabian industry. “I think we have failed as an industry to utilize auctions as a way to truly market our horses,” he says. “Too many times horses haven’t been represented appropriately or buyers have wanted a deal or been disappointed because the horse wasn’t what the seller said it was. We need to change that and be honest, transparent and disclose the horse’s complete history. As an industry we’re missing out on a great marketing tool.”

John’s approach to auctions has paid o huge dividends for the Cal Poly program. Having sold nearly 100 horses through auctions, John sees auctions as his best marketing tool. “If I’m honest about the horses I’m o ering for sale, then it will pay o in the long run,” he says. “It can work that way for everyone else in the industry.”

Besides carefully timing the auctions to ensure success, John focuses on building trust, being transparent and providing full disclosure. “When that horse steps o the trailer, I want the new owner to say, ‘ at horse is exactly what John said it was.’”

John’s commitment to wanting the above outcome has provided the foundation of how he prepares for the Cal Poly auctions. He also credits longtime auctioneer Bill Addis with teaching him many auction standards.

“Bill taught me a lot of things,” John says. “One of which was to make sure the videos represented the horses and to get rid of any distractions in the videos.” John is meticulous with his videos. “ ey don’t have to be long videos under saddle,” he says. “Just 45 to 60 seconds of the horse moving.” Horses are shown wearing discipline-appropriate tack. “If it’s a hunter horse, we show it in a hunt saddle, not a western saddle,” he adds. “If it’s a western horse, we’re using western equipment. It’s important to show that horse doing what the horse is intended to do.”

Besides videos showing the horse moving, he also takes video of the horse walking away and walking toward the camera. Additionally, he videos the horse standing still, taking care to move around the entire horse. If the horse has any blemishes or conformation issues, he takes special care to show those in detail versus hiding or downplaying them.

John also measures the sale horses. “If you buy a house and you’re told the house is 2,000 square feet, you don’t want to nd out a er the fact that’s it’s really only 1,800 feet. So, we measure every horse. We don’t guess.”

By following the principles of trust, transparency and disclosure, Cal Poly has found auctions to be very successful and have attracted well-respected and repeat buyers in the industry.

IF I’M HONEST ABOUT THE HORSES I’M OFFERING FOR SALE, THEN IT WILL PAY OFF IN THE LONG RUN. IT CAN WORK THAT WAY FOR EVERYONE ELSE IN THE INDUSTRY.”

WELCOME TO THE ARABIAN WESTERN PLEASURE ASSOCIATION

The AWPA is thrilled to be involved in promoting this incredible group of stallions, breeders, trainers, owners and young horses. There are 98 stallions enrolled this year … the sixth year in a row to have over 90 stallions nominated! We are so appreciative of each stallion owner who has supported the AWPA. This program is successful thanks to you and the committed mare owners who continue to breed and produce tremendous Western Pleasure prospects.

The 2023 AWPA Stallion Service Auction will be online through the Arabian Horse Times website March 3rd – 7th. Foals resulting from breedings purchased in the Auction will be eligible for an additional $49,000 in prize money in the 2028 Futurities.

As we look back on 2022, we are proud to report that the four AWPA classes had a record number of entries. In particular, the AWPA Maturity classes had some of the largest entries for Western classes at Mid-Summer. The purebred class had a cut for the first time! Congratulations to all the amateur owners who handled the heat well and took home prize money in those tough classes.

The U.S. National AWPA Futurities were once again must-see classes at the show! The quality of the entries is outstanding every year. Both Champions were dominant, winning by over 30 points, which is very difficult to do with a 5-judge panel. Congratulations to all competitors.

The program paid out over $273,000 in 2022 and will award even more money this year! Of particular note was the increase to the owners of stallions who sired entries who showed—over $20,000 was awarded to them.

The Auction Foal Bonus Payout was also significant. The Futurity entries in the Top 14 who were the result of breedings purchased in the 2017 Stallion Service Auction were given a split of the $43,000 reserved monies -- $3,562.86 to each of the five Purebred Auction foals and $2,257.50 to each of the eight Half-Arabian Auction foals.

We could not offer the Futurities & Maturities without the partnership of Arabian Horse Times and Equine Athlete Veterinary Services. A big THANK YOU to them and to all our sponsors who make these classes so special:

ASSOCIATION SPONORS:

We look forward to another incredible year!

Kid V French Kisses, by Sir Fames HBV

PA FRONTIER KID:

A couple years ago, longtime Arabian horse owners Paige and Brian Whittecar were on the hunt to locate that next great young western pleasure prospect. Joined up with tip-top western pleasure trainer Joe Reser, all were con dent their search would reap results.

Brian recollects, “We heard about a coming 2-yearold Sundance Kid V colt Frank Chisholm had bred out of his mare French Kisses, purchased by his mother’s side by Elizabeth O’Briant, herself an accomplished breeder. Joe and I were intrigued.”

Brian and Joe boarded a plane bound for North Carolina and Elizabeth’s farm, primed to meet for themselves, the impeccably bred, long legged, smooth gaited bay colt.

Upon their arrival, Joe and Brian’s introduction to the 2017 bay stallion PA Frontier Kid was at his stall … a stall boarded up with a nailed-in 2 x 4!

“Elizabeth calmly told us PA Frontier Kid was a true magician,” Joe chuckles, “and that nailing a 2 x 4 across his stall door was the best way to keep him inside. She then picked up a nearby hammer and expertly removed the board. PA Frontier Kid strutted out of his stall practically telling us, ‘I’m the man!’”

Arabian Horse Times | 22 | AWPA Futurity
“We were confident that 2022, his last year as a Junior horse, would be a good one”

e young stallion and the 2 x 4, a unique situation at best, put Joe in a short-lived quandary. Would this alluring, athletically blessed young stallion have the mindset necessary for western pleasure?

Two actions quickly doused his concern. “Straightaway, Brian was 1,000% sold on PA Frontier Kid, telling me, ‘Let’s do this!’” Joe laughs. “Next, my ‘gut’ kicked in, telling me that as sure as we didn’t buy this horse, someone else would. Someone who would send PA Frontier Kid to a competing top trainer. I could picture it … PA Frontier Kid and his trainer beating me in the show pen. We just couldn’t let that happen.”

e sale was made, and with the new barn name of “Pancho”, was delivered to Paige, Brian and Joe at the 2019 U.S. Nationals. Pancho’s new home was Shamrock Farms LLC, just outside Fort Worth. He settled in, taking to Joe’s training with intelligent enthusiasm, enjoying his frequent turn outs in spacious pastures.

Primed and ready for the 2020 U.S. Nationals Western Pleasure Futurity, Pancho won 4th Place overall in a eld of 32 three-year-olds. Next beaconed 2021 and the coveted U.S. Nationals $100,000 AWPA Western Pleasure Futurity Championship. Pancho and Joe showed only one time prior to October’s U.S. Nationals, “He was dialed in, ready to show o his stu ,” says Joe. Winning the Reserve Champion AWPA Western Pleasure title was a thrill for all.

Still growing into his tall, long-legged frame, Pancho was lling out even more, and his ever increasing work ethic was now an equal match for his incredible self-con dence. “We were con dent that 2022, his last year as a Junior horse, would be a good one,” Joe says. And triumph prevailed with both reaping the 2022 U.S. National Champion Western Pleasure Junior Horse red roses.

Brian and Paige couldn’t be more ecstatic about Pancho, both in the show pen and as a breeding stallion, who will create his own legacy as a game changing producer of top quality progeny.

“Pancho is Paige and my rst venture owning, marketing and breeding a top stallion,” Brian shares. “He is among the younger generation of Sundance Kid V sons on the ground. We hope to see his iconic sire and his dam’s beauty and athletic talent combined in him to further elevate Arabian Western Pleasure horse quality, type and talent.”

He adds, “Pancho has two babies scheduled for 2023 delivery, plus huge interest in bookings this year for 2024 foals. We’re just as committed to his show career as we are to his in uencing the Arabian horse as a game changing breeding stallion.”

Joe agrees, “For 2023, I’ll be showing Pancho at Scottsdale, U.S. Nationals and maybe one other show. He’s ready to show his stu in the bridle; his attitude tells us ‘Yep, I’m here, ready to walk that red carpet.’”

“Every day with Pancho is a new adventure,” Joe concludes. “He’ll tell you when he needs a play day, then the next day he gets right down to business.” And in the show pen? “He lives for those bright lights shining down on him!”

“We hope to see his iconic sire and his dam’s beauty and athletic talent combined in him to further elevate Arabian Western Pleasure horse quality, type and talent.”

The AWPA has 98 enrolled stallions for 2023, with many offering both Purebred and Half-Arabian breedings in the March Auction. See who is the best match for your mare at arabianwesternpleasure.com!

WHY BUY AN AUCTION BREEDING?

•50% of the Stallion Nomination payments are reserved for that breeding year’s Auction foal crop to have as bonus prize money in the Futurity Finals!

•Each year, the percentage of the Auction bonus prize money divided between the Purebred and Half-Arabian Futurities will be determined by the number of breedings offered.

•Foals resulting from breedings purchased in the Auction are eligible for additional class prize money:

•The added money will be split evenly among the Top 14 AWPA Auction foals in the Finals -- no matter the placing in the class.

•For example, in the 2025 Purebred Finals, if all entries are AWPA Auction foals, the Top 14 will each receive an additional $2,092.14 in prize money [$29,290 split 14 ways].

•Likewise, if 3 of the 14 finalists in the 2024 Half-Arabian Finals are AWPA Auction foals, they will each receive an additional $6,930.00 in prize money [$20,790 split 3 ways]!

AWPA RULES & REGULATIONS

ENROLLING YOUR STALLION

Stallions may be enrolled annually for the fee of $1,000 by the deadline of December 1st of the year preceding the stallion auction. For example, to have a stallion enrolled for the 2023 year, the paperwork and payment must be submitted by December 1, 2022. Nomination forms can be found at arabianwesternpleasure.com.

One (1) breeding must be donated to the AWPA Stallion Service Auction. A stallion owner may choose to donate two (2) breedings, one Purebred and one Half-Arabian, for their $1,000 nomination fee.

•Whether the owner donates one or two breedings, the nomination fee remains at $1,000.00.

•In order for both purebred and Half-Arabian foals of the nominated stallion to be eligible to compete in the corresponding classes, the stallion must be entered in BOTH auctions.

•The stallion owner agrees to be the purchaser of the auction donated breeding if it does not sell at auction, for the minimum bid of $1,000.

MARE NOMINATION

In order for foals sired by an AWPA nominated stallion to be eligible to participate in the Futurity and Maturity classes, they must be nominated in-utero by submitting a Mare Nomination Form.

Mares must be nominated before the end of the breeding/auction year for a $100 fee. December 31, 2023, for this year. Nomination forms can be found at arabianwesternpleasure.com.

ENTRIES

The ONLY four-year-olds allowed to compete in the U.S. National AWPA Futurities will strictly be those who were nominated in-utero by December 31st of their breeding year. •Each year’s Mare Nomination list is posted on arabianwesternpleasure.com, and shows which breedings may result in eligible offspring.

The ONLY four and five-year-olds allowed to compete in the AWPA Maturities will strictly be those who were nominated in-utero by December 31st of their breeding year.

CLASS GUIDELINES

The U.S. National AWPA Futurity classes are open to four-year-olds who were nominated in-utero by December 31st of their breeding year.

The AWPA Maturity classes are open to four and five-year-olds shown by an Adult Amateur Owner rider.

•They must have been nominated via an in-utero Mare Nomination by December 31st of their breeding year.

A five judge total points system will be used. Each Judges placing will be ranked and points applied according to the following table:

•Foals resulting from breedings purchased in the Auction are eligible for additional class prize money that will be split evenly among the Top 14 AWPA Auction foals in the Finals – no matter the placing in the class.

•The amount of prize money offered each year will be published in the annual stallion brochure.

Stallion owners receive one ‘Auction’ breeding with their nomination. This breeding can be used on a mare of the stallion owner’s choice or can be sold by the Stallion owner to anyone the stallion owner chooses and for any fee the stallion owner chooses. An in-utero Mare Nomination must be submitted by December 31st with payment of $100.

For every three (3) stallions one stallion owner nominates, they will receive a fourth stallion nomination at no charge.

Stallions who sire the Champions in the 2023 AWPA Purebred and Half-Arabian Futurity classes will receive a 2024 stallion enrollment at no charge.

Any mare that has been bred to an AWPA enrolled stallion can be nominated. However, the stallion must have been enrolled in the type of class the foal would compete in. For instance, if a stallion only offers a Purebred breeding in the program, then Half-Arabian foals would not be eligible, and Mare Nominations would not be accepted.

The breeding does not have to be purchased in the AWPA Stallion Service Auction.

An AWPA Class Entry Form must be submitted to the AWPA by the show entry deadline. The form can be found at arabianwesternpleasure.com.

The AWPA class entry fee is $700.

All other entry and office fees charged by National shows must be paid directly to the show.

Quality is the number one criterion for judging, followed by performance, suitability, and manners.

•A stallion or gelding showing with their penis substantially exposed (flaccid or erect) in any portion of the class, will be considered to have a major manner’s violation. Judges will be advised to score the horse so as not to receive a placing in the class.

The Final will be run as a standard Western Pleasure Junior Horse class. Upon completion of the rail portion, horses will be called to line up head to tail.

FROM SHOW RING SUPERSTAR TO DAM OF EXCELLENCE

When a horse can carry multiple amateur, junior and open riders to national titles, well, that horse is something pretty special. When that same horse is also named a Dam of Excellence with just six o spring, she’s even more special. And so it is with Kheanne (Khadraj NA x TN Katiki, by Versace), bred by Julia Neufeld.

Brett Becker, who has had the mare since the end of her 3-year-old year (Gordon Potts started Kheanne and showed her to a U.S. National Top Ten in the Arabian Western Pleasure Futurity in 2011), says the fact that multiple people have been able to win national titles on Kheanne speaks to her talent and personality. “Everyone I’ve ever had ride her has won on her. She’s a horse that can win no matter who is sitting on her. at says a lot.”

Retiring a er the 2022 U.S. Nationals, the beautiful bay mare went out on top, taking owner Nancy Maximuck to the Reserve Champion title in the Arabian Western Pleasure AAOTR 60 & Over class in a highly competitive eld of 31 horses. It was a thrilling end to the pair’s 2022 show season, having also claimed two top ten awards at the Youth & Mid Summer National Championship Show and a Champion at Region 2. But it was their national ride in Tulsa that Nancy is particularly proud of.

Arabian Horse Times | 58 | AWPA Futurity

“I still get choked up and have goosebumps when I think about it,” she says. “I don’t think that is something that will ever go away. It was just about a perfect class. I understood her. She understood what I wanted, and we just clicked.”

Nancy attributes much of her success in the ring to Brett. “He really looks at the way you ride and tailors what he is saying to every individual. Not every rider is the same, and he understands that. He also knows his horses really well. As long as you follow his directions, you’re going to do well.”

And do well they did, ever since 2017 when Nancy bought Kheanne. With a successful show career and the mare approaching 15, Nancy and Brett had discussed retiring her following the 2022 show season. Although Kheanne was still at the top of her game, they decided to stick with their original decision and focus on breeding.

“She’s already had some really beautiful babies,” says Nancy. “We’re expecting one this year by Sundance Kid V that we’re pretty excited about.”

ose beautiful babies have since led to Kheanne’s next achievement, this one outside of the show ring. Recently named an Arabian Horse Times 2022 Dam of Excellence by meeting four requirements: one, that she herself is a national champion, and the remaining three, producing one or more national champions (three), as well as two or more reserve national champions (three) among just six babies, proves herself to be an incredible dam.

Kheanne’s rst o spring were the result of twin embryos that Brett ushed the same day. Both are by Sundance Kid V.

Kheanne’s rst lly, Jasmine and Magnolia was born in 2016 and quickly followed in her dam’s show ring hoofprints, capturing three national championship titles in 2021. At U.S. Nationals, she was champion in both the purebred performance halter class and in the Western Pleasure Maturity out of a eld of 38. At the Mid Summer National Championships, she earned champion in the AWPA $15,000 Maturity class. She followed that up at the 2022 U.S. Nationals with a reserve championship in performance halter and a top ten in the Arabian Western Pleasure AAOTR 19-39 class.

e second embryo, Bentayga, a stallion, arrived ve days later, and has also had a successful show career. In 2021 he was named U.S. National Champion Western Pleasure Junior Horse out of 40, a er earning reserve champion in the same class at Mid Summer Nationals. Prior to that, he proved his abilities with two national top ten titles as a Futurity horse.

e stallion On Demand (by Onyx A), born in 2018, took home the 2022 U.S. National top ten title in the Arabian Western Pleasure Maturity a er winning the championship at Mid Summer Nationals in the Arabian Western Pleasure Junior Horse class.

“How many mares can you say have produced three national champions out of just six babies—not very many,” says Brett.

Kheanne’s other o spring include the mare Trulianna (by Trussardi), a regional winner in the Western Pleasure Junior Horse division; the stallion Just Mac (by Justin Mac V); and Khameroon (by Rodan LTD), a 2021 colt.

All but Just Mac, who is with Greg Harris, reside at Becker Stables, something Brett is excited about. “ ey are owned by di erent people but having them here and being able to watch them mature has been very rewarding.”

What’s next for Kheanne? Nancy says that besides continuing to use frozen embryos with recipient mares, they also hope the mare can carry a foal during her next cycle.

“We’re just thrilled she had such a tremendous go for her nal show ring appearance and we are so excited about her future. She is truly one of a kind,” Nancy says.

Brett concurs, and not just because of her successful show career and highly-performing o spring. “Kheanne has a great personality and is really a wonderful horse to be around.”

Friends & Clients Weekend

Aware that it is the people who you surround yourself with that is a measure of your success, Royal Arabians set out to thank those who support them. Inviting over 200 to their Friends/Clients weekend held at their Scottsdale farm January 6th-8th, it was a celebration of an incredible 2022 show season and an amazing educational weekend for all.

Included in the festivities was a presentation of Scottsdale show and sale horses for the upcoming 2023 season, as well as the stallions that will stand at Royal Arabians for the 2023 breeding season.

The “education” portion of the weekend culminated in a great group of experts sharing their years of experience in the industry. McKay Stirland, a lawyer, informed about equine contracts, and the dos and don’ts when you buy a horse; Paul Kostial was on hand to explain what the goals are and objective is of his non-profit program “We Love Arabian Horses”; Murilo Kammer, one of the world’s top breeders and judges, gave a great presentation on the different styles of Arabians between countries; and Greg Knowles gave a presentation on what a halter judge looks for when judging, and talked some on genetics and how to use them in individual breeding programs.

It was an incredibly fun weekend, and Royal Arabians’ generosity did not go unnoticed. Not only were they incredibly giving with their time, facility, and knowledge, host Cindy McGown, provided all the meals and beverages for the entire group for the whole weekend. It was a weekend that earned the goal of becoming an annual event for all who want to learn more about the wonderful world of the Arabian Horse. n

Shirley Shepherd Watts, 84, of Halsdon Arabians, died peacefully on December 16, following a short illness.

Born in London, she met her husband Charlie in 1961 when they were both studying at the Royal College of Art.

Sharing a passion for horses, they founded Halsdon Arabians in Halsdon, north Devon in the early 2000s, the 600-acre stud home to around 200 horses.

Shirley’s interest in Arabians began more than 50 years ago when her husband showed her a photograph of an Arab stallion and she fell in love. After their first Arab purchase, a part-bred, it spiraled from there.

Their breeding program focused on Polish Arabians and had a number of prolific Polish-bred mares with bloodlines going back to the three-quarter Egyptian stallion Palas. Shirley was a regular visitor to the Polish Arab horse sales and the Pride of Poland Arab horse auction, and she enjoyed much success in the show ring. The stud’s HS prefix became renowned in the Arabian horse world, with many horses carrying it, particularly in endurance.

Shirley was also known for her love of greyhounds and was a long-term supporter and patron of the Forever Hounds Trust.

Shirley is preceded in death by husband of 57 years, Charlie (2021), and is survived by daughter Seraphina, her son-in-law Barry, granddaughter Charlotte, sisters Jackie and Jill, and brother Stephen.

Born to Bill Nolan and Anna Kenny, and raised schooling many breeds, Ann’s first horse was a palomino Half-Arabian from the Ringling Bros. Circus. By 1961, she had a stable of her own, where she taught riding. She married mechanical engineer Harold Stover, who lovingly supported Ann’s and their only daughter Beth’s dreams.

Ann was an advocate for the wellbeing of animals and humans alike in all aspects of the industry under the many hats of rescuer, teacher, trainer, competitor, judge, and friend. The words “knowledge, kindness, integrity and dedication” were used many times to describe the person Ann was.

In addition to training, competing in and earning National titles, Ann served the industry in many roles as a president, judge, and member of many commissions and committees.

“Ann was an icon in this industry and did so much for our youth,” says Nancy Harvey, “both as part of organizing and running events, as well as providing a safe haven for those youth and adults that needed it.”

Martha Rattner agrees. “If the Arabian world had a Queen Elizabeth, it would be Ann Stover. Southern to the soul, Ann was part of the rise of many young, dedicated trainers, and was part of building some major breeding programs She was never afraid to call it like she saw it and she was always right. She was a mentor and a hero; the iron spoke in the wheel.”

Sharon Hassel Behringer of Terrell, Texas was a member of the Arabian horse community for 30 years, serving as show committee chairman and announcer, as well as a board member, Vice President, and President at various times over the years in her local Lone Star Arabian Horse Club. She and her husband, Ernest, bred 18 Arabians, local Champion and Regional Top Five Azim Ibn Kaset among them, who in turn sired 29 progeny himself.

Sharon is remembered by those around her as a good friend to many, a loving wife, an artist, an animal lover, an incredible horse show manager and announcer, and so much more. With strong faith and a smile always on her face, Sharon could often be seen rushing behind the scenes in her quiet, helpful way… holding a horse for a child or encouraging others.

Jack Thomas (1955-2022)

Jack Harding Thomas, Jr. was born in San Diego, CA on January 18, 1955, to Jack Harding Thomas, Sr. and Rosa Nell Stacks Thomas.

His love of animals grew as a young boy being around his father’s farm in Alabama where horses were trained. Once Jack graduated from Brewer High School in 1973, it was a natural progression from riding and showing horses, to working fulltime with his father in the horse training business.

It was a true love affair when the first Arabian horse arrived at the barn. Jack found them so splendid, the farm became an Arabian training facility. Over the following 40 years, Jack received National, Reserved National, and numerous Top Ten awards for horses he had trained.

Jack became a judge for the Arabian Horse Association and was honored to have judged the U.S. and Youth National Championships, Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, The Buckeye, National Show Horse Finals, and the Houston Livestock Show, as well as internationally at the Canadian National Championship and in Sydney Australia’s East Coast Championship.

Jack’s faith was very important to him, as was his husband, Tony, whose career often took them to new places. Jack took on new roles in the retail and hospitality industries after retiring from the horse business in 2015, and everywhere he went, he made lifelong friends.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Jacquelyn Nell Thomas Bowman. He leaves behind his husband, Tony Shubert, his niece Katie Rose Bowen, his mother-in-law Carol Shubert and various friends and family.

IN MEMORIAM

With a career spanning two decades, and blessed with a tremendous amount of natural movement, Aequus became an icon in the Arabian horse world. A 10-time National Champion or Reserve in Park competition, Aequus, the winningest park horse in the history of the Arabian breed in the United States, is the only horse to have won the open and amateur park horse championship in the same year, and he accomplished this at the age of 19.

Bred by Shiko Arabians, and owned by Hazelbank Investments since 2006, he is the most recognized son of Sheikh Ibn Shiko and the only product of his dam, C Me Maroussa, securing his place as a legend.

Trainer, William (Bill) Rodgers, who has had the privilege of working with Aequus for over a decade, was noted as saying, “Aequus was a-once-in-a-lifetime horse, for both his amazing ability to trot, and his personality.

“Aequus stands 14.2 hands tall, but he’s a giant at heart. He’s never failed to give us 100%. I wish that everyone who’s owned a show horse could experience one like this. The crowd loved him as much as we do!”

Justafire DGL (1992-2022)

In his first year in English competition, Justafire DGL (Afire Bey V x MC Justa Kate, by The Chief Justice), only needed to prove himself once, earning U.S. National Reserve Champion English Pleasure Jr. Horse in 1997. What followed was 20 years of himself breeding one National Champion after another, creating a legacy of further highlysought bloodstock that is well-respected to this day in the halter and performance arena.

Bred by Dave and Gail Liniger, and owned by Debroah Holden for the majority of his life, notable offspring include: S Justadream, 10-time National champion and dam of stallion supreme Justify; the Half-Arabian gelding and 23-time National winner Rohara Americanlegend; and National Reserve Champion Stallion Shaddofax, often putting Justafire DGL on Leading Sire lists throughout his life.
