This is the easiest paste to use by far! I don’t have to

lunge my horses as much, and it helps keep them focused. We also don’t have to keep wiping their mouths...the horses like the taste. ~Rick Gault

On Point is very effective, and I don’t have to use as much as other pastes.

This makes it cost effective for my owners. My horses like it and I don’t have to worry about working them down so much to show. ~Sally Randle

The horses swallow this paste, so there isn’t any waste.

On Point doesn’t make the horses feel soggy, they just go out and do their job. This not only helps our rides, it also allows our amateurs to concentrate on what they need to do in the show ring rather than fighting a hot horse. ~Joe & Michele Reser

Stay On-Point Equine Paste™ • Allows your horse to stay calm and focused during competition. • Palatable and easy to dose. • Contains no USEF prohibited substances.

A SELLER’S MARKET Those who pay attention to the market for Arabian horses will have noticed that we’re in a seller’s market. For various reasons, we have not enjoyed this sort of thing in quite a while, except for the top horses in competition (or the ones with the best potential), and that is a very select segment of the industry. They sell privately and only rumors tell us what someone paid. But, what about a seller’s market that might affect everyone? How can we, as a community, take advantage of that to realize the most benefits? I suggest that we use the demand to develop a stronger middle market, long one of the biggest challenges we have faced in selling our horses and promoting our breed. One of the reasons selling horses in the middle market—not the grand championship level, but not personal trail horses either—is validating prices. Buyers need to understand the market and what these horses cost. To do that, why not take another look at auctions, but in a different way than we have in the past? In recent years, many of us have come to think of auctions as where you’d go to unload a mediocre horse. Today, I think we’re in a completely different place. It never hurts to point out that in the golden age of the industry, the auction stage was where some of the greatest horses in the breed sold for impressive prices. The fact that multiple people wanted those horses and bid on them also gave more validity to what the top ones were worth. Until you have a public auction, you never know how many people want those standouts or what the buyers are willing to pay. All of that factors in to setting the values for Arabians in general. The middle market then could comfortably establish its place beneath the highest level, as buyers could more easily rate the talent and ability of the horses. Frequently, mid- to upper-level horses sold at those auctions too, further confirming their value. So, that’s what’s been on my mind today, and I’d love to hear your thoughts. Most importantly, let’s make the most of the opportunity a seller’s market offers to expand our community.

Photos & story by Jenn Trickey To dozens of horse crazy individuals and their families, the Annual RBC Open House of National champions who line the aisles of the Smithfield, North Carolina training facility is a welcoming sight. But, more importantly, and more creatively, it is much more than that. It is a weekend of old and new … an appreciation of the past with the prospect of the future, and an event of first-time experiences that will never be forgotten.

Rob, Caralyn, Janie and company began the weekend on a Friday evening with a dinner and stallion presentation for the 50+ attendees who traveled for the event. Ten stallions rocked the crowd in the indoor arena—they never disappoint. Those in the audience who owned or had known them well, continued to be awed, while those new to RBC and horses in general, got a huge dose of their sprit; both thundering across the stage, and standing quietly for their more intimate connections.

Ar abian Horse Times | 19 | Volume 52, No. 8

O

f course, they come to see the horses. They are the heart of the event, however, RBC took a pause in the presentation to honor their clients who have been with them for so many years. Sharing stories of Jordan Williamson, of Dolorosa Arabians when she entered the ring for the first time as a youth rider began a walk down memory lane to include George and Debbie Attwood, Debra Hines, Frank and Sara Chisholm, and Nan Harley. Appreciation was given to those friends and clients who have been with Rob and Caralyn for decades. Following Friday night’s reflection of the past was a day to welcome the future! With local advertising, the farm encouraged area families to have an up close and personal interaction with Arabians horses. For some, it was an interaction to feed an already horse-hungry palate; for others it was a brand new taste! Attendees were assembled in groups of 5-10 who were guided through six educational stations.

Station 1, The Veterinarian Dr. Kently Dean, a long-time Arabian rider and breeder, gave an overview of her typical services and did not leave out the sometimes, not so glamorous details! Through observation, touch and feel, Dr. Dean broke down how she helps to keep horses happy and healthy.

Station 2, Grooming Down the aisle, the groups rotated. The next stop was at the cross ties. From the importance for health and hygiene, to tricks of the show ring preparation, the group picked up brushes and curried right in!

Station 3, Finger Paint Station This year’s horse volunteer to be the canvas was Caduceus TDF. This sweet, 5-year-old gelding displayed just how kind and kid friendly Arabian horses are, while they took turns painting on the love! All safe and water soluble, of course, this station was one of the favorites. Caduceus was certainly the big hit of the weekend.

Station 4, The Farriers One of the industry’s oldest professions was demonstrated by farriers Johnny Canady and Lafras Beukes. Explanations of the trimming and shoeing process were topped with hands-on help from the groups. The importance of hoof health was a fascinating topic of the day, and everyone was welcome to roll up their sleeves and dig in!

Station 5, Lead-Line How many lead-line stations do you know of that can brag about its use of a multi-national champion and sire of multi-national champions in the pony ride? This year’s all-around champ was none other than the living legend Possesion PGA+//.

Station 6, Training/Conformation and Suitability This one was back to basics and in the bull pen. Rob Bick explained and demonstrated concepts including moving away from pressure. He described the display of several behaviors in horses when training them. He demonstrated the ease of which a horse can carry a rider when asked correctly. This station was full of questions and answers—no two alike.

Following the stations, lunch, and a few horse presentations, the day once again shifted to a new discussion. Welcomed to a panel to discuss breeding, were experts John Lambert of Cal Poly University at Pomona, California, Tim and Marty Shea of Shea Stables in St. Clair, Michigan, and RBC client, Frank Chisholm of Palmetto Arabians in South Carolina. The team shared their experiences of trials and tribulations. They noted the levels of ups and downs to ultimately reach their

successes. Questions and answers were exchanged. The underlying common message was the importance of respectful breeding, and much advice was given from the pros.

As the day wound down, the horses continued to be admired by everyone, but undoubtedly, each person walked away with something a little different. For one, it could have been a smile of a memory that took place 15 years ago; for another it could have been the first time feeling of a hoof pick in their hand; or maybe it was the excitement of having just chosen a stallion for their first mare to breed.

Looking back … looking forward … this was not your average Open House; but maybe it should be!

Carrying On The Sherman Family Legacy by COLLEEN SCOTT When Peyton Bergstad, Marty Sherman’s granddaughter and Jill Sherman’s niece, started riding Quarter Horses at the age of eight, no one predicted that at just 17 years old, she would be starting the young, homebred horses at the family’s Sherman Ranch in Pleasanton, Calif. before sending them on to trainer Gabe DeSoto. But that’s exactly what she’s doing. While she learned some basics on the Quarter Horses, she quickly aligned herself with the Sherman Ranch Arabians. “I love everything about them,” she says. “They are so athletic, pretty and beautiful to watch. And they are also very sweet.” Peyton’s show ring accomplishments are many, including championships and reserve championships at Youth Nationals, Regional Championships and Class A shows. Most recently, she added high achievements at the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show to the list. Riding the homebred SR Charming Charlie (Baskghazi x Turn My Way) in the Signature Stallion Country English Pleasure Maturity, she claimed the reserve championship title along with a nice check. On Fire It Up CRF (Baske Afire x On Tulsa Time), she was unanimous champion in both the HalfArabian English Pleasure JOTR and JTR classes. She also piloted SR Lava (Afires Heir x Pineapple Express) to a unanimous reserve champion title in the Arabian English Pleasure JOTR class. But even more impressive, especially to Gabe, is the two top ten country English awards she earned with SR Spread the Love (HA Toskcan Sun x It’s All Aboutt Me), a 5-year-old mare with just 30 days of training and at her very first show. “She just put that horse in there and rose to the occasion, getting her around the arena and where she needed to be. She made it look easy, but I know how hard it was because I showed her too,” he says. “But that’s the kind of rider Peyton is. Very confident, very aware of her surroundings and very good at putting her horses in good spots.” It’s a long way from the Sherman ranch in California to Gabe’s facility in Kentucky, so Peyton doesn’t make it there for lessons on a regular basis. But when she is there, she makes it a point to gather a lot of knowledge to take and apply to the horses she rides at home. “She asks a lot of questions, not just about the instructions I’m giving, but also about the training methods. She knows that training isn’t the same for every horse and there is a lot of trial and error and she’s able to adapt.” Back in California, Peyton not only starts the young horses, but she is also involved in every aspect of the farm, including

daily chores, foaling out the babies, cleaning, feeding – every chore that goes with the commitment of living on a ranch. “She rides at home every day,” says Jill. “But with being able to ride every day comes a lot of other things to get done.” It’s that riding and hands-on experience interacting with the horses daily that has most likely led to Peyton’s show ring successes. And as excited as she is about those, she’s just as excited about being able to do the initial work with the Sherman Ranch babies. “At first it was just for fun and when it came time to put them in the bridle, it was a little stressful, so I would call Gabe for advice,” she says. Fast forward and now she puts first rides on all the horses before they go to Gabe’s. How’s that working? According to Gabe, “Peyton puts a great foundation on them. A lot of them are better than horses I’ve gotten from some actual horse trainers.” Besides continuing to start horses, manage the farm and help with the breeding decisions, Peyton plans to combine her love of horses with a career as an equine veterinarian. Her youth career will conclude in 2023.■

hirty years ago, the gates swung open in Oklahoma City for the first time for an Arabian Youth Nationals. This was the first of its kind for the Arabian industry, showcasing the talents of riders below the age of 18. In many ways, this event revolutionized the way shows would operate well into the future. For example, this was the first national show that announced top ten recipients in the ring with a victory pass. It was also the birthplace of the championship group photo, where parents and grandparents were granted permission to join their rider in the championship photographs. The largest class of the show was the Western Pleasure 17 & Under JTR with 97 entries, and the Saddle Seat Equitation Semi-Finals had an impressive showing of 23 entries all of which were girls. The Half-Arabian Ladies Side Saddle 17 & Under JTR boasted 22 entries with Western & English combined. An even more impressive number was the $55,000 in scholarships that were awarded that year. Thirty years ago, the following opening sentiment still stands true today: Whether showing on a National level, participating in 4-H and local clubs, or simply tooling around the trails, these youngsters are learning valuable lessons about horses, about themselves, and about life. From their ranks are sure to come the Arabian industry’s future leaders. Remember the faces you see on these pages, because you’re certain to meet them again.

ECTIVE HOW IMPORTANT IS THE SUITABILITY OF HORSE TO RIDER IN AGE GROUPS, SELECT, ETC.? TED CARSON: In Walk/Trot, 13 & Under and 60 & Over, I believe it should be the first spec in the rules. It should absolutely trump quality. Although it’s about the 3rd or 4th spec in line in the rulebook, I will follow the specs as written per class.

WHAT ARE YOUR JUDGING PET PEEVES? TED CARSON: Good question. When you’re responsible for finding your best 10 horses in these large classes, it’s hard for me to find things that become a pet peeve. If I had one, it would be mainly in open classes when the horses are giving over 100% of themselves and the professional continues to school the horse, asking for more.

JANET HENDERSON: It is important; ensuring a positive experience for all is the goal.

DAVID MIKOSZ: When exhibitors are slow about coming through the in-gate. I feel it is unfair to those that come right in and have to go around and around.

DAVID MIKOSZ: Well matched horse and rider combinations are always a pleasure to watch.

PEGGY BEACHY: A rider that is disrespectful to their horse, trainer, or parent.

PEGGY BEACHY: The overall presentation and performance is key.

RON BEACHY: The horse, tack, and rider not properly turned out.

RON BEACHY: The communication between the horse and rider is very important.

MEG SKAFGAARD: Not having the horse and rider turned out appropriately. The horse and rider should always be clean and tidy to make a good first impression.

MEG SKAFGAARD: It is very important in all age groups of equitation. A younger, smaller, and less experienced rider should have a horse that is size and temperament appropriate. Also, an older rider, depending on experience, should have the same. A very tall rider on a small horse will not make a very good first impression. BRIAN SCOGGINS: The importance of suitability is very important. I feel that at times we often overmount some of our riders, at any age. I like to see the rider enjoying his or her ride, not looking as if they may not have any more strength, and their arms come out of their sockets. KATHY CALLAHAN-SMITH: Horse/rider combinations need to complement each other and meet the specifications of their class. Just because it’s the coolest horse in the class, is not enough. DEB WITTY: I am a big believer in suitability. I do not like to see kids over mounted on horses that are over their skill level.

BRIAN SCOGGINS: A few pet peeves are when someone misses a lead and you hear all kinds of things: someone’s name, a whistle. That is a flat give away there is someone out there on the wrong lead. In reining, when someone whistles on the 4 spins. The rider should be able to count on their own. KATHY CALLAHAN-SMITH: Riding close to the center of the arena and too close to officials and ring staff. DEB WITTY: Sportsmanship. I have issue with kids that do not support their peers or act disappointed if they don’t win. ANNE MOSS: Riders that look left and right as they halt at ‘X’, corner cutting, and poor accuracy of the pattern that lowers the score of an otherwise good ride. WAYNE QUARLES: I don’t have any major pet peeves other than rough hands.

ANNE MOSS: Suitability is super important for the training and rideability of the horse to the rider, while height, age, conformation and movement are less important. The ultimate goal is to see a harmonious partnership between horse and rider. In dressage and western dressage, we are looking for the training and balance correct for each level, as well as accuracy of the test pattern. WAYNE QUARLES: I feel that suitability has mostly to do with the visible partnership the horse and rider have established and the results of that partnership.

PERSPE WHAT’S ONE THING YOU THINK ALL EXHIBITORS SHOULD KNOW?

WHAT WILL GET YOU NOTICED IN A GOOD WAY? AND IN A BAD WAY?

TED CARSON: I think it’s important to know the rules as an exhibitor.

TED CARSON: The main arena is a quality-based arena, so bring quality. Bad manners is a really good way to get noticed as well.

JANET HENDERSON: Judges are on your side! We want to see you succeed.

DAVID MIKOSZ: All judges are working diligently to give proper consideration to every entry. PEGGY BEACHY: Exhibitors should know the class specifications for the class they are showing in and prepare accordingly.

RON BEACHY: The judges want each exhibitor to do well. MEG SKAFGAARD: Judges are always trying to do the best job that they can. BRIAN SCOGGINS: We as judges can’t see everything. Never stop showing your horse. If you have made a mistake, who knows what we saw. KATHY CALLAHAN-SMITH: The rules governing their classes! Know what you and your horse are being judged on. I always recommend exhibitors go to the AHA Judge’s School, to see showing from a different perspective and become a more knowledgeable rider. DEB WITTY: Don’t give up. If you have a bad transition or maneuver, keep showing. You never know what has happened in the rest of the class and you should not act defeated. ANNE MOSS: They should know their dressage test pattern. I see riders go off course even when they have a test reader and it is a costly error. Also, riders should leave the arena after the final salute on a loose rein at the walk. And … if you do go off course during a dressage test and the judge blows the whistle, ride towards the judge and they will tell you where you went off course and remind you of the correct pattern. Take your time regrouping and remember that the error will not affect the score of any of the following movements. WAYNE QUARLES: A smile and positive, but not cocky attitude, will get you noticed quickly. If it appears you are happy with the way you look and your performance, then the judge will feel positive about it also. KAREN WINN: The rules! Also, judges love to give high scores, but you must earn them.

JANET HENDERSON: I love to see the partnership between rider and horse.

DAVID MIKOSZ: An excellent entrance will get you noticed in a good way. You only have one chance to make a good first impression. In a bad way, is overriding and going too fast, does not improve your presentation.

PEGGY BEACHY: Exhibitors can be noticed in a good way if they look around and do their best to stay spread out in the ring, so they can position themselves to be noticed by the judges. And in a bad way? Exhibitors not having a well-groomed horse, clean tack, or polished boots. RON BEACHY: An exhibitor not getting along with their horse. MEG SKAFGAARD: Once again, make sure you and your horse are appropriately turned out. Another important detail in flat classes is to always be aware of your space and the other exhibitors. BRIAN SCOGGINS: A horse and rider well turned out and looking very positive in their approach towards the task at hand, gets you noticed in a good way. Not good is someone who is insecure and has no confidence in what they are doing, or a rider and/or horse is not well turned out. KATHY CALLAHAN-SMITH: Good is riding in the show ring like you ride at home. Bad is not having quiet hands with bright colored gloves on or a quiet leg with blingy chaps. DEB WITTY: Smile and act like you are having fun no matter what. I will notice if you are not fair to your horse or get upset on course. ANNE MOSS: Good is riding good corners and straight centerlines; a balanced position, independent seat and steady hands with an elastic contact and “feel”; and a smile and a big pat for the horse after the final halt. Bad is rough hands; horse or rider out of balance; cutting corners; wrong bend on corners and circles; horse above the bit or tossing the head; and poor horsemanship or sportsmanship. WAYNE QUARLES: A confident presentation and smooth performance will get you noticed in a good way. Losing your temper or rough handling of the horse will instantly get you noticed in a negative way. KAREN WINN: Excellent basics are always appreciated by judges. Busy, harsh hands are not appreciated.

Ar abian Horse Times | 270 | Volume 52, No. 8

ECTIVE IN PRESENTING A HALTER HORSE, HOW IMPORTANT IS THE ENTRANCE AND WALK ON LOOSE LINE? IS THE CENTER RING STANDUP IMPORTANT?

WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN PERFORMANCE HALTER AND HOW WOULD YOU LIKE THAT HORSE PRESENTED TO YOU?

TED CARSON: A lot of decision making is made up for me in the trot and walk; the standup is nice, but not the most important.

TED CARSON: These horses are really nice that are being shown in this class. It’s fun to see the quality riding horse and beauty come together.

JANET HENDERSON: The scorecard speaks to this with a score dedicated to quality, balance, substance at the walk. Standup is important to allow the judges a fair look.

JANET HENDERSON: I look for an athlete. Our rules are clear as to the expectation for the presentation.

DAVID MIKOSZ: Watching the entrance is fun, but not that important to me. I get my best initial impression of the horses at the walk. The standup portion (not the pose) is a significant part of the class. This is where I can evaluate the horse in detail. PEGGY BEACHY: The horse is being judged during all aspects of their time in the arena. Whether standing, walking or trotting, all phases are important. RON BEACHY: The horse is being judged from the moment it enters the ring, until the horse exits the ring. KATHY CALLAHAN-SMITH: The entrance should show the horse’s soundness, movement, presence and enthusiasm. The walk on a loose line shows the horse’s true and natural conformation. The center ring stan up enables the judge the opportunity to evaluate parts more closely. DEB WITTY: All of it is important to give us the best overall view of the horse, but the center ring stand up should not be overdone.

DAVID MIKOSZ: I look for a horse that has correct conformation and suitable attributes for its class. I don’t mind an attentive horse as long as it isn’t posed in a way that contorts its natural structure. PEGGY BEACHY: In performance halter, a well-mannered horse that is presented in a way that the handler does not block the view of the horse while being judged. RON BEACHY: I’m looking for an athletic horse that represents the breed well and meets the specs of the class. KATHY CALLAHAN-SMITH: I thoroughly enjoy seeing our beautiful horses shown in a relaxed and natural state. Each horse possessing the conformation and type or quality for their respective performance class. DEB WITTY: I like a horse presented confidently and relaxed. I look for the best overall conformed animal that can do its job with ease. ANNE MOSS: In Sport Horse In-Hand classes, the stance should be open (not quite square with front or back legs, so the judge can see all four legs from each side), and body balanced over the legs - not stretched out which will hollow the back and raise the head un-naturally. The neck should be arched and come forward out of the shoulder to show off a round crest. The gaits are judged for quality and athleticism, the horse will have to be relaxed enough to show a big walk with clear overtrack with the hind feet reaching beyond the footprint of the front hoof, and in the trot, cover as much ground as possible with suspension and suppleness. Do not run your horse on the triangle in boots, put on your running shoes so you can show your horse’s biggest trot on the back side of the triangle. WAYNE QUARLES: In all halter classes it is important for the handler to pay attention to where the judge is so that they don’t block the judge’s view. A well-groomed, well-mannered, and an athletic, balanced and quality presented horse is what we will be looking for.

Ar abian Horse Times | 271 | Volume 52, No. 8

PERSPE WHAT’S A COMMON MISTAKE EXHIBITORS MAKE THAT YOU WISH YOU COULD CORRECT?

TED CARSON: It’s an emotional business so it’s hard not to become emotional. But try and remember that although you and your horse have worked hard to overcome many things, the judges only have a 15-minute window to choose the class.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF JUDGING YOUTH NATIONALS?

TED CARSON: The youth exhibitors are incredible! It’s a joy to see them give what they do in competition; they always amaze me every time I judge. JANET HENDERSON: I am very excited to see whole families competing - proving once again the Arabian/ Half-Arabian/Anglo-Arabian is the ultimate breed.

DAVID MIKOSZ: When riders I’m considering cut the corner so quickly after they pass me, that I don’t get a chance see their number. This happens most often in Hunter Pleasure classes.

DAVID MIKOSZ: After bringing kids to Youth Nationals almost every year since the show began, I am excited to have my first opportunity to judge it.

PEGGY BEACHY: An exhibitor that doesn’t utilize the entire ring when showing.

PEGGY BEACHY: Having the opportunity to judge the very best youth in the country.

RON BEACHY: An exhibitor not making themselves visible to the judge in the Under Saddle class.

RON BEACHY: Seeing the exhibitors having a great time.

BRIAN SCOGGINS: In reining, the one thing is finding the center of the circles. Circles are hard to plus, but easy to deduct from your score. Get the middle of your circle. It will go a long way to a better score. Make your stop marker. That two points is very hard to make up. KATHY CALLAHAN-SMITH: Trust your horse! Remember, you worked hard to get to the show, enjoy it. And know that the judge is on your side. We want you to have your best ride ever in f ront of us. DEB WITTY: Putting numbers on crooked. ANNE MOSS: Riders lose a lot of points by not riding accurate figures, and for not being able to fulfill the requirements of the movements. Many times, the horses do not stretch the topline and swing through the back in the free walk or stretch circle at the trot. It would help if the riders would read the ‘directive’ column on the test sheet to review the criteria for each movement or figure (also reading the ‘purpose of the test’ at the top of the test sheet too!). Most riders do not ride an energetic enough Medium Walk - it should be bigger than a Working Walk with a small over-track and marching tempo, with elastic contact in a round frame. It helps to read all of the judges’ comments on your test sheet. The judge is rooting for you and will try to give you many comments as suggestions on how to improve the ride next time, so study these comments.

MEG SKAFGAARD: This will be the second time judging the Youth Nationals. One of the nicest things as a judge is the very welcoming staff and how organized they are. It also fun to watch the exhibitors and trainers, and how much fun they are having. BRIAN SCOGGINS: Watching the kids showing their horse to their best ability. KATHY CALLAHAN-SMITH: Youth Nationals has always had a wonderful feel to it. It is amazing to see the depth of our riders and their special horses. DEB WITTY: The kids and the camaraderie that is visible even from inside the ring. ANNE MOSS: This will be my first-time judging Youth Nationals and I am very excited to see the best Youth riders in the country. Best of Luck to all of You! WAYNE QUARLES: Seeing the next generation of equestrians working with and enjoying their time with their horse(s).

WAYNE QUARLES: The most common mistake riders make is not using the full arena to their advantage to prepare. In a Dressage test, use the corners to balance and prepare, in a group class, stay visible but don’t keep cutting in and circling the judge. KAREN WINN: Pay attention to the geometry of the figures in a dressage test. A circle should be round, not square or oval; a serpentine the width of the arena should look like three adjoining half circles; and riders should view every corner as an opportunity to balance their horse and prepare for the next movement. Horse Shows From what I’ve seen, 2022 has started strong and has great potential for our breed. So, this is a good time to be making some changes that will create growth in our future. One issue that needs to be addressed seriously is our horse shows. For years now, exhibitors have been saying that the shows last too long, and with the attendant time and costs, that limits how many events they can participate in. Additionally, as more classes have been added, the days have become so long that the fun has been diminishing. That isn’t good for our community or for our ability to attract newcomers. Here are my thoughts on the matter. In the heyday of horse shows, nothing but the national-level shows ran on for days and days and offered classes morning, afternoon and evening. It was recognized that horse shows were social occasions where people not only enjoyed the competition, but also the company of their friends (many of whom, met in the horse business, and were from other areas of the country). So, first, let’s reduce the number of classes. At the larger shows these days, there are so many different classes that you might suspect the object is that everyone can win a trophy. Let’s have fewer, but inevitably larger, classes. Yes, some folks won’t win as often, but when they do, it will mean more. Have we forgotten that competition is the object? Imagine how satisfying it is to see proof that you are upgrading your skills when you do achieve a blue ribbon in a more difficult class.

Actually, I think we’re doing a disservice to our exhibitors to assume that winning is their only goal. I think most of us will step up to the challenge of improving our skills. We can navigate a ring with many horses (or learn to). Think about how much more qualified those going to U.S. Nationals will be! We’ll see even more depth in our championship events. Let’s also make sure that evening classes don’t run beyond 10 p.m., to give exhibitors more time to spend with their friends. Let’s create a situation where success won’t necessarily depend on just winning. And finally, if we are going to attract new people, we need to remember that we are in the entertainment business. Fewer but larger and more exciting classes serve that need—not only for spectators, but for the riders in the classes who respond to the electricity in the air. I was thinking about all of this when I returned from Region 12, which is easily one of the most popular shows in the country. It’s amazing. But even so, I noticed that, like most other large shows, the days and the number of classes offered were super long. That clues me in to one last suggestion: how about we have our Regionals end on Saturday night? Give exhibitors time to regroup before heading home. Before signing off, let me add what is perhaps the most important benefit of all. For those of us who will have to step up our skills to compete in larger classes, that will mean more time riding at home—more time spent with our horses. And what ensures more love and more commitment to the breed than spending time with your Arabian?

Hiding in Plain Sight — New Discoveries of Original Documents on the Horses of Abbas Pasha by Edouard Al-Dahdah The Arabian horse collection of Abbas Pasha I, Viceroy of Egypt and the Sudan (r. 1848–1854), heralded by its European and Oriental contemporaries alike as the choicest and largest of its time, continues to fascinate to this day. It has been the subject of countless books and articles over the past century and a half. In general, these tend to recycle bits and pieces of information from first or second-hand accounts by European visitors of the studs of Abbas Pasha, like the German stud master von Hugel or the French veterinary Hamont. Even Lady Anne Blunt, to whom we owe the survival of a majority of the Abbas Pasha bloodlines available today, only managed to obtain scattered and partial information about the horses she and her husband acquired from Ali Pasha Sherif (themselves from Abbas Pasha lines), despite a twenty-year long quest for original documentation.

Painting of Abbas Pasha I, Viceroy of Egypt

Indeed, only a minority of the books and articles ever written about the horses of Abbas Pasha are based on original sources – i.e., Arabic language sources produced by the main people concerned about these horses: their breeders, buyers, owners, and sellers. For the longest time, The Abbas Pasha Manuscript was the main exception. Translated into English by Gülsün Sherif and Judith Forbis and published in 1993 by Ansata Publications, it is based on an Arabic language manuscript copy owned by Gülsün’s father, Ahmed Bey Sherif, a great-grandson of Ali Pasha Sherif. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia later acquired this manuscript and published limited numbers of fac-similes. The Abbas Pasha Manuscript is essentially a compilation of the histories of horses acquired (or about to be acquired) by the envoys of Abbas Pasha to the Bedouin tribes of Arabia. The original was produced in 1852–53, and remains to this day the most comprehensive record of the histories of dozens of strains

of Arabian horses acquired by Abbas Pasha. Amazingly, another original document is now available: The Abbas Pasha Sale List When Abbas Pasha was assassinated in 1854, his son Ibrahim Ilhami Pasha inherited his father’s stud. Ilhami Pasha died in September 1860 at the young age of twenty four, when his boat capsized over the Bosphorus. At the time of his death, he was heavily indebted to the Bank of Egypt and private bankers, who organized the sale of his estate in an attempt to collect debt. Part of Ilhami Pasha’s estate was constituted of the remainder of his father’s stud of Arabian horses. Advertisements about the sale of some two hundred and eighty stallions, mares and foals appeared in German, French and British newspapers, and attracted wide attention across Europe and within Egypt’s elite. A sale list was drawn, and a public auction was held in over eleven days between December 10 and December 30, 1860. This sale list is the centerpiece of my new book, with Kate McLachlan and Moira Walker, The Arabian Horses of Abbas Pasha — New Discoveries: The 1860 Abbas Pasha Sale List and other Original Documents, with a Foreword by Judith Forbis, a design by Joe Ferriss, and the generous sponsorship of Sheikha Sarah Al Fahad Al Sabah of Kuwait. To be fair, the Abbas Pasha Sale List is not exactly a new discovery. When I stumbled upon it in the summer of 2016, it had been hiding in plain sight for some sixty years in the form of thirteen photocopies of an Arabic document tucked in every edition of Carl Raswan’s The Raswan Index and Handbook for Arabian Breeders. This precious

Ibrahim Ilhami Pasha, son of Abbas Pasha, and heir to the horses of Abbas Pasha, died unexpectedly in 1860 resulting in the famous dispersal Sale of priceless Abbas Pasha stock.

document was just lying in the middle of one of the breed’s most widely known publications, with hardly anyone paying attention to what it contained. Its original title is “Account of the horses sold from the bequest of the late Ilhami”. The dense Arabic text consists of two hundred and seventy eight entries for every horse sold at the sale, including its price, gender, coat color, markings, strain, the name of its original Bedouin owner if the horse was imported from Arabia, its dam’s and sire’s name, color, and the name of their original owners, and the name, title, and occupation of the buyer of the horse at the auction.

Bookends: left is The Abbas Pasha Manuscript (1993), right is The Arabian Horses of Abbas Pasha (2022)

In many ways, my book The Arabian Horses of Abbas Pasha – New Discoveries: The 1860 Abbas Pasha Sale List and other Original Documents, and Gülsün Sherif’s and Judith Forbis’s The Abbas Pasha Manuscript and Horses and Horsemen of Arabia and Egypt During the Time of Abbas Pasha, 1800–1860 are like two bookends! Just like The Abbas Pasha Manuscript documented the horses Abbas Pasha bought from Arabia at the onset of his reign, the Abbas Pasha Sale List sheds an unprecedented light on this collection a decade later. Classifying the Abbas Pasha Horses The book’s first chapter classifies the horses in the Abbas Pasha Sale List in three different ways: by mare line, by stallion line, and by buyer. The mare section confirms Abbas Pasha’s predilection for the Dahman and Saqlawi strains of Arabian horses, while recording the dozens of other strains he owned, most of which have vanished. The stallion section of this chapter highlights

the preeminence of his senior stallion Ghadir, a Saqlawi which at the time of his acquisition by von Hugel, had seventy nine descendants in the Sale List, far more than any of the other twenty reference stallions. The buyer section shows the outsized role Egypt’s Viceroy Ismail Pasha, and one of its noblemen, ‘Ali Bek Fahmy (the future Ali Pasha Sherif) played at the Sale, amidst many smaller Egyptian and European buyers. The second chapter goes through the European purchases as they appear in the studbooks of France, Germany, and the Austro Hungarian empire among others. The book’s third chapter showcases six other smaller original Arabic documents, including a scrapbook of the future Ali Pasha Sherif from a period that preceded the 1860 Sale, two surviving entries from Ali Pasha Sherif’s studbook now lost, and three documents from Lady Anne Blunt’s archives.

Painting of the Abbas Pasha stallion Ghadir by Otto Stotz (German, 1805 – 1873), Collection of Gudrun Waiditschka. He was the senior stallion of Abbas Pasha in the 1860 sale.

The fourth chapter analyzes breeding patterns at the stud of Abbas Pasha drawing on the information in the Sale List, including his use of desert-bred versus home-bred stallions and mares, and the choice of certain strains over others for breeding. It shows that Ilhami Pasha had been actively breeding up until his untimely death, with at least one in four horses in the Sale List being attributed to him. All these original sources come together in the fifth chapter, which features revised pedigrees for a number of foundation horses of modern Arabian horse breeding from Abbas Pasha bloodlines. The original documents yield a number of surprising revisions to long-accepted genealogies. In a nutshell, this fifth chapter fills a critical forty year gap that has long eluded researchers and students of the Arabian breed at large, by directly connecting the horses Lady Anne Blunt acquired from Ali Pasha Sherif in the 1890s with the original desert-bred Abbas Pasha horses imported from Arabia in the early 1850s.

Finally, the last chapter features a verbatim translation of the Sale List, the way it was originally drawn, by day of sale, allowing future researchers to draw their own conclusions. The Other Abbas Pasha Manuscript — Still Missing! Rarely since Rosemary Archer and James Fleming published excerpts of Lady Anne Blunt’s Journals and Correspondence in 1985, and Judith Forbis and Gülsün Sherif published The Abbas Pasha Manuscript in 1993, has a book brought to light so much new information on the horses of Abbas Pasha. Hopefully the discovery of other missing pieces of the puzzle, like the elusive studbook of Ali Pasha Sherif and another different original copy of The Abbas Pasha Manuscript, (once known to be in the possession of a Saudi Arabian diplomat) will bring forth more knowledge about this legendary collection. So the never-ending search for the other original Manuscript continues!
