It was a magical show...

We extend our gratitude to everyone for supporting our dream!

A Round of Gratitude.

I know Sam Peacemaker and the PCF team were thankful for everyone who visited the farm during the Scottsdale show to enjoy their beautiful horses. It seems very much to be their mission statement to breed and own the highest quality Arabians, but to also share them with responsible fellow breeders and enthusiasts alike. PCF I know is thrilled with the accolades and congratulatory comments from some of our industry’s finest and most knowledgeable folks. As I have observed, they are quite proud of their horses and love to share them with everyone.

The young and marvelous sire Martino PCF had an amazing show. In the SSS Yearling Colts, a son of his was named unanimous Champion, and his daughters, one belonging to Sam, was named Silver Champion Yearling Filly in the International class and another PCF-bred yearling now owned by Orrion Farms, won the Yearling Filly class in the open unanimously and was also Unanimous Reserve Junior Champion Filly in the finals on Sunday. On top of that, PCF owned or bred fillies swept the Junior Championships, including Bella Z, unanimous Champion in both her qualifying class and the Junior Fillies Championship!

In all, at Scottsdale 2024, Sam Peacemaker and his team won seven unanimous champion titles! A big round of congratulations goes out to Sam and his team for their many accomplishments.

All winners were exquisite and a testament to the current day PCF breeding program. Below, is a list of these phenomenal entries:

There will be more top wins under the capable hands of Carlinhos Souza, PCF’s Head Trainer and Handler. His talent is leading the stars of PCF Arabians to one championship after another.

PCF has installed a well-oiled team thus far! The dreams of Sam are being realized, it certainly appears to me.

Testimonials describe what has been, and are a promise of what is to come.

It is a great pleasure to work for PCF Arabians! My childhood dream was to become a successful, professional horseman and I feel like it has finally become a reality. It is an honor to give a championship to an incredible person like Sam Peacemaker.

I know Sam Peacemaker professionally, and as a friend for over 20 years, Sam has always been a breeder with a vision. It’s no accident the success that he is enjoying now, on being one of the top breeders in North America. The recent addition of the talented Carlinhos Souza to the PCF team is the icing on the cake to make this a perfect winning combination. We all got to witness the results at this year’s Scottsdale show and I applaud you and wish you many years of success.

It’s so much fun to watch Sam’s breeding plan come to fruition. It’s clear he is passionate about it and we love that he’s having so much success in the show ring. Breeding championship quality horses is hard and Sam makes it look easy!

I’ve had the good fortune of being in all kinds of different situations with Sam Peacemaker and I am consistently impressed by his character, horsemanship, and passion and I couldn’t be more honored to have him as my friend. Sam selects and breeds his horses according to what makes him happy and I love that. It’s wonderful that Sam and his staff were so successful at this year’s Scottsdale show, it truly could not have happened to a better guy.

Yearling Signature Fillies at Scottsdale has always been special for me and my family. We’ve been fortunate to have bred four fillies that won this class with me before, but this year showing a Dominic M filly to an unanimous win sent it over the top for me. Special thanks to Sam Peacemaker for letting me show his amazing filly.

Sam is a breeder that understands and studies pedigrees. Rae-Dawn Arabians has been so privileged to have integrated some of PCF’s special mares and fillies into our breeding program. We will always be indebted to the Peacemakers. Breeders helping Breeders!

It was a ROYAL Scottsdale Show

The Last Dance - Perfinka

When you ask the Royal Arabians team to name a highlight from the Scottsdale show, it isn’t the multiple championships, unforgettable ring performances or the fact that they were the number one halter breeder of the show (by points, a system which assigns a number of points to each championship). While that distinction is important, (more on that later in the story), it’s their role in bringing Arabian enthusiasts from all over the world together that resonated.

“We had people from Brazil, Romania, Belgium, Saudi Arabia and of course the U.S.,” says Rodolfo Guzzo, longtime cornerstone of the Royal training and breeding program team.

This global support for the breed, and the Royal program in particular, was especially apparent when Rodolfo led P erfinka (Esparto x Perfirka) to her First Place Arabian Mare 8 Years & Over win and ultimately, the Scottsdale Senior Mare Championship title. In what was her last appearance in the U.S., the stunning grey mare did not disappoint.

Perfinka came to the U.S. in 2019 and since that time, now with owner by Abdulaziz Bin Saleh Bin Abdulaziz

Al-Rajhi, has captured the hearts and imaginations of Arabian horse enthusiasts. Of her farewell dance with Rodolfo, he says, “It was such an honor to present this mare at her last show in the U.S. She was happy and it showed. It was a very emotional class for everyone and the support we had from the international and U.S. communities was very touching.”

The power of an amazing mare like Perfinka to bring a diverse, global community of supporters together, as a family, cannot be underestimated.

And that family dynamic aligns with the Royal way of thinking. Whether it’s a U.S. family or a global family, the Royal Arabians program is about one family’s adoration for a horse and the journey that brings them together. “ It is our wish that all families can experience an anchor that unites them, regardless of what is happening in their lives, as the Arabian horse has done for this family.”

Perfinka was the embodiment of that global anchor at the Scottsdale show.

Leading Breeder Of Halter Horses

While Perfinka’s victory was certainly a highlight that everyone celebrated, there were 28 others for a total of 36 title wins.

Amongst the five title winners in the international arena, the Royal-owned Royal Asad was sire of two:

Royal Atticus (x Sweet Satisfaction), who claimed the International Arabian Breeders Senior Stallion Gold title for owner Calibur LLC, achieving the highest score of the entire show, and Royal Black Moon (x Seduction HBV), Champion in the International Arabian Breeder 3-Year-Old Mare class.

Other notable wins by Royal-bred or owned horses in the halter arena included Royal Pandoraa (AJ Radman x Pretoria AS NA), Breeders Club Champion Yearling Filly ATH and Royal Reign (AJ Radman x Rhadashah Arabco), Breeders Club Champion Yearling/Colt Gelding ATH; both handled by Amanda Pagan, who also presented She Be Glorious (PA Kid Khan x She Be Royal) in the Half-Arabian Mare Championship AATH to a Reserve title. She Be Glorious was led to a Reserve title in the Half-Arabian Junior Filly Championship as well, with Austin Boggs.

The Royal Arabians program was also fully represented in the Scottsdale Signature Stallion halter classes, earning top ten wins with: Royal Aries (Royal Asad x HK Sweet Festiva) and the aforementioned Royal Reign in the SSS Championship Yearling Colts/Geldings ATH, Royal Luka (HDF Lugano x Royal Hadara) in the SSS Auction Championship Yearling Colts/Geldings AOTH, and Royal Sofia RSB (Royal Asad x RFI Sophie Almaktub) in the SSS Championship Two Year Old Fillies ATH.

Rodolfo is quick to point out that while the wins and the leading halter breeder designation are meaningful, the horses are what is really important. “Every win is exciting, and of course, we like to set out to show each horse to its best, but even if we don’t win, as long as the horse is beautiful and happy, then we’ve accomplished a lot already. Every single horse is important to us at Royal Arabians.”

The success of the Royal-bred horses is no accident, but the result of a carefully thought-out breeding program that has been in development since its inception. Now standing approximately 25 stallions, Royal Arabians’ mission is to breed the best examples of the Arabian horse, and to provide a home for them to flourish and grow to their maximum potential. Their program focuses on beauty and athleticism, producing not only outstanding halter horses, but also performance horses.

At this year’s show, Royal Arabians’ Royal Asad was a top five sire in number of halter winners, and AJ Radman (AJ Mardan x AJ Rahifa)—who in collaboration with Ajman Stud, Frank Sponle and Elisa Grassi, produced four champions for Royal Arabians—was the leading sire of halter winners by both points and number of winners.

“What we were able to do at this year’s Scottsdale show really proved why Royal Arabians is always striving for the top,” says Greg Knowles who heads up sales and marketing efforts at the farm. “We are absolutely humbled by the success we were able to accomplish with the great leadership of Rodolfo and Natalie, and the work of the team,” he says.

“I think we are inspired to continue to be the best we can possibly be and there isn’t a limit to the level we are going to be able to rise to,” he added.

The Royal Team

While the team’s leadership around the grounds is apparent, including owners Cindy McGown and Mark Davis, breeding manager Amanda Fraser, Rodolfo, Natalia and Greg, as well as highly successful performance trainer Justin Cowden, it’s everyone working together, some on the forefront and some behind the scenes, that makes Royal Arabians so successful.

Greg shares, “Cindy and Mark constantly try to better their breeding program and are always concerned about how to make the Arabian horse world a better place. Guzzo is always 100% active in the care and well-being of every single horse we have under our care, and Natalia, well if you know her, I really don’t need to say more. She runs the office, and Guzzo and me as well. She is amazing and not only loves every horse here at Royal, but sincerely cares about every client we have.

“We are all so grateful for the countless hours the entire crew puts in behind the scenes, all day, and sometimes all night between getting the horses ready, showing horses to customers, and helping clients with their horses. It takes a big team to support an effort like the Scottsdale show, and we appreciate every single person and how hard they work almost around the clock for two weeks.”

One of those people is Ariel Marie Gordon, who manages the care of the broodmares and foals at the Royal breeding operation in Mesa. She helped prepare some of the babies presented at the show.

Everyone’s hard work has paid off, not only in showing and breeding successes, but also in recognition outside the ring. This year, Royal Arabians was nominated for 11 Readers’ Choice Awards, and won in the following categories: Halter Amateur of the Year (Amanda Pagan), Arabian Halter Horse of the Year (Aria Rakeem) and Marketer of the Year.

“Our team is very talented and committed to Royal Arabians’ success,” continues Greg. “Our successes at Scottsdale, the camaraderie of our global community, the AHT nominations, … these are all affirmations to how hard this team works for its Royal family to be the best they can be every single day.”

3X NATIONAL CHAMPION | ARABIAN BREEDERS WORLD CUP GOLD CHAMPION

Rancho Las Potrancas: Vision Breeds Success

When I last spoke with Felix Cantu, he was eagerly anticipating the 2022 United States National Arabian Horse Championships, where three horses representing his Rancho Las Potrancas were scheduled to compete. No stranger to the national winner’s circle, Felix had confidence that, under Andy Sellman’s expert guidance, his horses stood a good chance of making it into the champions’ spotlight. And, boy, was he ever right about that! In a spectacular showing that most exhibitors can only dream of, Felix achieved an elusive trifecta when all three horses were crowned U.S. National Champions.

In a class loaded with quality, Tasheem PMA (Taj Raheem x Chiara Luna, by KM Bugatti) rose to the top and was named the 2022 U.S. National Champion ABS Yearling Colt. Marajja EK (Marajj x Kindle VF, by TF Psymreekhe), destined to be an instrumental broodmare for the farm, won the 2022 U.S. National Champion Futurity Filly title. And Aria Valiant (TS Khidam El Shawan x BH Beijings Velvet, by Beijing BHF), who earned the U.S. National Champion 2-Year-Old Colt honors the previous year, was selected the 2022 U.S. National Champion Futurity Colt. Positive outcomes don’t get any better than that.

In 2023, Rancho Las Potrancas diversified their presence at the U.S. Nationals when they entered horses in both halter and performance classes. Aria Valiant completed a Triple Crown when he won his third national title in as many years, being named the 2023 U.S. National Champion Junior Stallion, and OFW Dior (Dominic M x Duchess of Marwan, by Marwan Al Shaqab) added to the farm’s roster of winners as the 2023 U.S. National Reserve Champion

ABS Yearling Filly. On the performance side, ROL Ascension (Black Daniels x HA Ghrace Under Fire), the Scottsdale Champion English Pleasure Open horse earlier in the year, was a Top Ten in the Open English Pleasure Championship.

Chronicling those achievements bring us to the present. Felix Cantu and the Rancho Las Potrancas horses racked up another enviable record of accomplishments at this year’s Scottsdale show. In the halter competition, Andy Sellman showed the lovely Lan Exotika (Justimagine Joy x Lan Chavela) to the Scottsdale Reserve Champion 5-Year-Old Mare title and led OFW Reign (Dominic M x OFW Sovereign Diva) to the Scottsdale Reserve Champion Yearling Colt- (Jan. 1-April 15) honors. Felix is effusive in his praise of the charismatic colt. “We are crazy about him!” he enthuses. “We are very fortunate and excited that we were able to purchase him very young, thanks to Andy Sellman, Johnny Downing, and Orrion Farms. He is our favorite halter horse that we’ve had in a long time, and we are really enjoying him. We believe this horse will be one of the top stallions of the breed, and we will be enthusiastically promoting him. We have a lot of faith in Reign to go all the way, not just at this year’s Nationals, but until he becomes a Junior Champion stallion.”

In addition, Felix celebrated the first offspring of his 2022 National Champion Futurity Filly Marajja EK to reach the show ring, OFW Maajida. A daughter of Dominic M, bred by Felix Cantu and owned by Orrion Farms, she won first place in the Yearling Fillies April 16Dec.31 class. “We are so happy Marajja’s daughter won her class at Scottsdale, and we have another beautiful, incredible 2-month-old filly from her in Mexico,” says Felix. “We are going to send Marajja back to the U.S. to retrieve some embryos and will likely show her again.”

But the biggest thrill for Felix was having ROL Ascension defend his title, winning the 2024 Scottsdale English Pleasure Open Championship with Joel Kiesner aboard. “Halter is one of our

favorite parts of the shows,” he states. “It proves the conformation through the bloodline. But performance for us, with our history of breeding Lusitanos, proves the functionality of the horse, which is for riding. We are really enjoying Ascension at this point. He is a top-class performance horse and a beautiful horse, and we had a lot of fun with him in Scottsdale. We will take him to two or three Regionals, and if everything goes as we hope, we will take him to the U.S. Nationals.”

Perhaps even more importantly, Ascension will bridge the two divisions of Rancho Las Potrancas breeding, Arabians and Lusitanos, the classic bullfighting horses that are part of the Cantu heritage. “We are going to use some semen from Ascension and introduce him to the Lusitanos,” Felix explains. “We think Ascension is a horse that will change a lot of things for the Half-Arabians and the Lusitanos in Mexico. We have a lot of faith in him.”

Arabian Horse Times | 37 | Halter 2024

Felix has bred Lusitanos even longer than he has bred Arabians. He is a huge promoter of the dynamic breed, vowing to one day see a Mexican-bred Lusitano awarded the breed’s highest honor. “The title of World Champion Bullfighting Horse is always given to a Portugueseborn horse,” Felix states. “So, our Mexican-born horses are not in their market. But, for two consecutive years, we’ve had the runner up to the top bullfighting horse in the world. We have another one in the running this year. We aren’t going too crazy with this because we think a horse born in Portugal will probably win it, but it is exciting!”

This year, Felix Cantu was elected the President of the Lusitano association. “We are happy to be doing a lot of promotion for the Lusitano breed,” he acknowledges. “As President, I can work with all the people, all the breeders, to promote the Lusitano to a greater degree. We have a great Board for the two years I will be President; we are excited to do the work.” With innovative ideas such as bringing Ascension’s potent Arabian performance bloodline into the gene pool, the Lusitano breed will flourish in the capable hands of Felix Cantu.■

Dear Arabian Breeders World Cup & Emirates Global Cup Exhibitor,

Showcasing the best of the Arabian breed, supreme championships are offered for breeding horses of all ages, for our talented Amateur to Handle (ATH) exhibitors, and for Junior and Senior Geldings, as well as for AHBA Legacy Auction and Futurity nominated entries. The three-day schedule is packed with multiple opportunities for reward and achievement, with the best awards in the industry – trophies, garlands, ribbons and the exclusive Arabic saddles, daggers and golden stirrups courtesy of the His Majesty Mohammed VI of Morocco – ready to be awarded to dozens of deserving winners!

Always on the innovative vanguard, the World Cup is once again proud to lead the way by partnering with the Emirates Arabian Horse Society (EAHS) to host for the very first time the Emirates Arabian Horse Global Cup North American Championship. Held concurrently with the Arabian Breeders World Cup, the Emirates Global Cup will offer cash rewards – 5000 AED prize money - for breeding horses of all ages placing 1st through 5th in all qualifying classes for yearling fillies and colts, two-year-old fillies and colts, three-year-old fillies and colts, and in two age splits for senior mares and stallions.

The Emirates Global Cup has been purposefully created to reward small and medium-sized breeders around the world and to encourage not only the breeding of more Arabian horses by this essential demographic, but to incentivize them to showcase their horses at the premier breeding shows on each continent. According to the rules outlined by the EAHS, a small/medium-sized breeder is defined as any OWNER who has bred fifteen (15) or less foals in the 2020, 2021 & 2022 breeding seasons (January 1st – December 31st). Both the OWNER and the BREEDER of the entered horse must also be a citizen/legal resident of North America – the USA, Canada or Mexico, in order to be eligible to participate in the Global Cup.

We anticipate that a very large number of owners and breeders will qualify as small/medium-sized breeders and will be eligible for significant Global Cup prize money. A total of fifty (50) horses are eligible to receive nearly US$70,000 worth of prize money, which makes the Global Cup the most lucrative prize money programme ever offered in North America to breeding horses of all ages!

Several PDF documents have been attached to this email to assist you with entry for both the World Cup and the Emirates Global Cup. For complete information on both events, please visit the ABWC website at the links below.

ABWC Entry, Schedule & Prize List | https://arabianbreedersworldcup.com/worldcup-schedule/

Emirates Global Cup | https://arabianbreedersworldcup com/emirates-global-cup/

Please be reminded that only a SINGLE PAID ENTRY for the World Cup is required to enter both events – the World Cup AND the Global Cup – for all qualified entries. If you are qualified as a small/medium-sized breeder and the horses you are entering are both owned and have been bred by North Americans, please complete and submit the EAHGC-NAC Declaration Form with your entries. Banking details may be filled in at the event once it has been determined that you are eligible for prize money paid directly to your bank account from the EAHS.

Our intention is to reward and recognise as many deserving owners and breeders as possible and to show our immense appreciation for the international support from the EAHS for the grass-roots breeding efforts in our region of the world.

On behalf of the Arabian Horse Breeders Alliance, we thank you for your invaluable support over the years and your essential contribution to making the World Cup the trailblazing success it has been for nearly two decades. We look forward to joining you at this one final show in Scottsdale, on the beautiful Polo Fields of WestWorld before the World Cup returns to our original home in Las Vegas in 2025!

Please do not hesitate to contact us regarding any questions, clarifications or assistance with World Cup entries, sponsorship and participation at info@arabianbreedersworldcup.com. We look forward to celebrating with you, alongside our friends and colleagues from the global equine community, as we showcase the best of the Arabian breed and create more memories to last a lifetime!

Exploring The Timeless Arabian Horse Through Art

Horse Polo Art Gallery represents almost 50 equestrian artists from all around the world. Their expert contemporary painters work with a wide range of equestrian themes, including wild horses and scenes inspired by polo, show jumping, dressage, and other equestrian sports. The collection is comprised of fine art photography, drawings, paintings, bohemian glass, and mosaics. To celebrate their third anniversary this year, PR Manager, Barbara Rubitel, shares with us, a unique selection of artworks honoring the beauty of the Arabian horse.

“The Arabian horse has a fascinating history spanning thousands of years,” shares Barbara. “This timeless story crosses boundaries and cultures, linking the lives of influential characters ranging from prophets and pashas to monarchs, queens, and presidents from five continents. From times of brave desert warriors to the current era

of information, the Arabian horse’s outstanding qualities have secured its existence as the world’s oldest equine breed. Its vibrant temperament and extraordinarily smooth stride, lends itself to unquestionably be one of the most elegant living creatures, whom poets, painters and other artists proudly feature.

“While the precise origins of the Arabian horse remain shrouded in mystery, its distinctive silhouette can be traced back over 3,500 years to ancient Egypt’s artistic depictions. However, it was the nomadic Bedouin people of the Arabian desert who truly shaped and refined the pure breed we know today.

“We are delighted to present the perspective from contemporary equestrian artists who are still intrigued by the beauty and elegance of the Arabians.”

Rafael Lago

Rafael Lago was raised in Colombia but currently lives in Spain, a predominantly agricultural country known for its picturesque landscapes, vibrant natural colors, and abundance of wildlife. Rafael’s first encounter with horses occurred when he was a child, and he was astounded by the elegance, power, and free spirit of this noble creature.

These paintings captures a breathtaking scene of white horses gracefully galloping along the sandy beach. Arabian horses, strong and fast as a wind, with their long and graceful legs move in perfect synergy with nature. It also has a symbolic meaning. Since antiquity, white horses have often defeated evil and demonstrated their triumphant character.

Ignacio Videla

Ignacio Videla is a passionate show jumper from Argentina, who brought his passion for horses to another level, that of sculptor.

As a skilled rider, Ignacio knows perfectly the equine anatomy and mechanics of movements. But the most creative and challenging part of the process is to bring life into his models by elaborating craftily the eyes, mouth, and ears. Most of his artwork is dedicated to the gracefulness of the Arabian.

Numerous pieces created by Ignacio Videla are now displayed at Polo Clubs and are part of private collections in Argentina and across the world.

Edward Waites

Edward Waites is a British sculptor, who has already reached international recognition and acclaim. Throughout his brilliant career, he has received commissions from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, Dubai’s ruling family, and Lord and Lady Bamford.

Animals are the major focus in his amazing full-scale artworks. He carefully captures all the anatomy in detail, revealing the vitality, energy and grace of his subjects. Surprisingly, Edward claims to be a completely self-taught artist. Despite this fact, he is able to follow a very complicated ancient lost-wax method. He works first in clay, and then casts in bronze and silver in limited editions.

Artur Baboev

Artur is an animal photographer, a genuine artisan with 15 years of expertise whose works are exhibited in private collections in Paris, New York, Beijing, Brussels, Berlin, Hamburg, Rome, Beirut, Warsaw, Cairo, Tokyo, and, sure enough, in Russia.

Artur began his artistic adventure in 2007, when he began to photograph the beauty of his ancestral homeland, Karachay-Cherkessia, as well as its indigenous horses, which became the core topic of his creative work.

Artur’s works were exhibited at such venues as the Central House of Artists, the Lumiere Brothers Gallery, the gallery on Tverskoy Boulevard in Moscow, Château de MaisonsLaffitte in Paris, as well as in New York, Verona, Vilnius, St. Petersburg, Yerevan, etc. ■

BREEDING/IN-HAND

“Arabians are the foundation of all the light breeds of horses in the world; they are the most beautiful of all breeds; and the Arabian horse industry opens doors and makes connections all over the world.”
~Doug Leadley
Arabian Horse Times | 50 | Halter 2024

What Arabian mare or stallion, past or present, most represents your taste in halter horses, and why?

TJs Georgie Girl (Al Marah Canadius x Heritage Fleur). I first saw her as a yearling and we tried to buy her a few times. She was in fact bred to be a park horse and not a halter horse. I don’t know if she was ever broke to saddle but was a very gifted mover. For me, great conformation is a horse who is beautiful to look at in their stall because at the end of the day, the goal should be for the best ones to be used as breeding horses. Another mare that comes to mind is *Pesenka, whom I owned for a while. She was spectacular in her stall. Both mares were beautifully made and had amazing type, movement and eyes!

Do you compete at the shows with the halter horses you breed/own or both? If yes, which ones?

We breed all of our show horses. I enjoy breeding horses that have great predictability. As a breeder you can only improve your outcome if you know what to expect with certain combinations. You need to be realistic and understand your horses’ strengths and weaknesses, both phenotypic and genetic.

Do you like and/or participate in the prize money related halter programs and have you personally benefited from them? We do not show in the prize money programs as I really never showed as an amateur. We have entered some of the programs, but in most cases, wins do not even cover show expenses.

I am excited about Breeding Pays, however, as there is enough incentive to take the risk with competitive horses and it has been great to see amateurs doing well in these classes.

What process do you use for selecting stallions for your mares? What would you say about your selection process is working for you?

I breed both for the market and for future breeding stock. Sometimes a stallion fulfills both categories.

I try to pick stallions with pedigrees that contain close up individuals that I admire. For breeding stock, you must pay attention to tail female lines.

I always try to pick stallions that complement our mares genetically. For example, if I want more type, I will select an individual that improves mares that he is bred to. I try to look at the foals but also like to see the mares that produced those foals and look at the mare’s pedigree. If I see that a stallion did well with a mare that has a similar pedigree to the mare I am considering, that is encouraging!

Do you consider yourself an Arabian breeder? If yes, what is your main focus as a breeder?

We started off with a wonderful foundation stallion, U.S. and Brazilian National Champion *El Nabila B, who has consistently brought great carriage, eyes and athleticism to the table. Both of his parents had great genetics and were some of the biggest winners in European show history. All of our females with the exception of two, are descendants of this world treasure.

We strive to breed a contemporary horse without losing these great strengths that Nabila descendants often have. When it all comes together, it is a thing of beauty. A good example is the 2023 Scottsdale Champion Mare, Alesia ENB. She has great beauty and refinement, and she is a great beauty in her stall. She is also one of the most gifted movers in the breed and one that many English trainers would love to put under saddle.

KOY MOODY

Do you compete at the shows with the halter horses you breed/ own or both? If yes, which ones?

Yes, both. I currently own a 3-year-old mare that I bred, Carolinna (Aria Impresario x Marina AI), and a 2-year-old gelding, Jaiden ENB (AJ Radman x Justina ENB).

Do you like and/or participate in the prize money related halter programs and have you personally benefited from them?

Yes, and I consider them a highlight of the shows! As an amateur handler, there is no greater accomplishment than to be in the ribbons in these very competitive classes, especially when it’s with one you’ve bred.

What is your favorite show destination right now? And do you pay attention to shows around the world?

The Scottsdale horse show is my favorite; it’s the first time in the season to see new, upcoming horses and it sets the stage for the rest of the year. The amateur classes with prize money are equally as exciting!

Name the three aspects of an Arabian that are the most important to you.

Charisma, attitude, and neck/shoulder.

What two or three breeders do you admire and why?

PCF Arabians and Rae-Dawn Arabians, both consistently breed quality, complete and beautiful horses in both the halter and performance divisions.

SANDRO PINHA | Arabians international

What Arabian mare or stallion, past or present, most represents your taste in halter horses, and why?

There are several names that come to mind, but if I have to name one, it’s Pitonisa AS. She’s one the most powerful show mares of my lifetime.

Do you like and/or participate in the prize money related halter programs and have you personally benefited from them? Absolutely. These great classes incentivize breeders and owners and I have personally benefited from them.

What process do you use for selecting stallions for your mares? What would you say about your selection process is working for you?

Always start with conformation and then study the pedigree of the mare and stallion.

What is your favorite show destination right now? And do you pay attention to shows around the world?

Scottsdale is always a favorite, if you are involved in the breeding classes, you absolutely must pay attention to what’s happening around the world.

What do you feel a trainer’s role should be in the Arabian business?

First and foremost, make sure that the horses are treated with respect.

Name the three aspects of an Arabian that are the most important to you.

Arabian type, movement and presence.

What two or three breeders do you admire and why?

Among many, Sam Peacemaker has always stayed true to his vision of a great horse, and Michael Weinstein has a passion for the breed like no other person I have ever met.

GREG KNOWLES | Royal Arabians LLC

Do you compete at the shows with the halter horses you breed/own or both? If yes, which ones?

Royal Arabians competes at the highest level. They own and breed many champions, including the Royalbred 2024 Scottsdale International Champion Stallion Royal Atticus. Royal Arabians is proud to have achieved breeding and/or owning the most winners in the halter arena at this year’s show.

I personally manage Aria Rakeem who was just named 2023 AHT Readers’ Choice Halter Horse Of The Year.

Do you like and/or participate in the prize money related halter programs and have you personally benefited from them?

I really do believe that prize money is very important; it helps exhibitors defer some of the cost of showing. Also, because prize money is meaningful, it gives credence to a class; it becomes an important class instead of just another class. Also, other breeds are giving a lot of prize money in their shows, and we need to think about the fact that in this era of the horse business, we are competing with other breeds for our share of the exhibitor’s discretionary income.

What do you feel a trainer’s role should be in the Arabian business?

In the Arabian show world, a trainer is very important for the success of your show horses. Having your horse with a good trainer is like owning a good sports team. If your horse is top notch, you are going to win most of the time. A good trainer is your partner, your advisor, and a vital part of your success or failure in the industry. It is imperative that he is honest with you, and you are honest with them, so that you develop a relationship of trust. If you build that relationship, you and your trainer will achieve the goals and objectives that you are looking for.

Do you consider yourself an Arabian breeder? If yes, what is your main focus as a breeder?

Royal Arabians is definitely a breeder first. We have a passion for breeding Arabian horses. Cindy McGown and Mark Davis love pretty and Arabian type, but these horses must be athletic also.

Royal has a complete separate performance division at a different facility here in Scottsdale, and all our horses after or before their halter careers, go to performance training. Afterall, all horses need a job after their halter career.

Name the three aspects of an Arabian that are the most important to you. They must have a good, kind attitude with people, and are willing to work hard to achieve the lofty goals we hold for them; they must be athletic (they have four legs, they better know how to use them); and whether near or far away, they must look like Arabian horses.

What are your feelings towards current day judging? Name two judges you admire today, if you will. I like judges who live, eat, and sleep horses every day. I think that current judging is fine. I believe if they know a good horse, they will use a good horse. If they are not good judges or political, I think the free hand of the market will eliminate using judges like that. There are a lot of judges we respect and admire.

What two or three breeders do you admire and why?

One hundred percent, I am committed to Royal Arabians, so I might be a little biased. I am a huge believer in Cindy and Mark as breeders. Even more than that, Cindy and Mark’s commitment to the Arabian horse and its continued success is beyond compare. Their financial commitment, the time committed and energy that they give is unparalleled. Not only are they great breeders, but everything they do in this industry is defined by their commitment to breeding great Arabian horses.

There are many other breeders we admire, small and large. Desert Sky Arabians is a very small breeding program, that has been very successful in a very short time.

Name three horses from the past that you feel could still win today.

Ali Jamaal, Bask, and El Hilal.

Arabian Horse Times | 53 | Halter 2024

DOUG LEADLEY

What Arabian mare or stallion, past or present, most represents your taste in halter horses, and why?

Lulu Marajj. While I’ve been fortunate enough to have managed some of the breed’s top stallions (Bey Shah, DA Valentino and Dominic M), Lulu Marajj is my number one, and it’s not just because she is beautiful and 3-time United States National Champion, but because she is the mother of three United States National Champions.

Do you like and/or participate in the prize money related halter programs and have you personally benefited from them?

Yes, I’m a board member of the Breeding Pays Futurity, designed to support the breeders of Arabian horses.

What process do you use for selecting stallions for your mares? What would you say about your selection process is working for you?

The most important aspect of breeding is predictability. I study the stallions and mares based on what each will most likely deliver. Additionally, I know that only a hand full of stallions can stand the test of time. I call them “Generational” sires.

What do you feel a trainer’s role should be in the Arabian business?

Honest guidance and evaluation. Trainers should stop blaming judges for not winning. As long as the class winner is one of the best in the competition, the judge did a good job.

Do you consider yourself an Arabian breeder? If yes, what is your main focus as a breeder?

Yes. I have managed large breeding operations throughout my career. I have always believed you build a program with mares first; then match them with the generational stallion that will work best for that mare.

What two or three breeders do you admire and why?

Orrion Farms, PCF Arabians and Royal Arabians. These farms put a lot of thought into their programs.

Do we need more breed leadership? If yes, in what way or ways?

Yes, but the answer would take a week. Cutting our Regionals down to six or eight would be a good start.

Name three horses from the past that you feel could still win today.

Aramus, Fame VF and Magnum Psyche.

Arabian Horse Times | 54 | Halter 2024

THERESA LUNGWITZ | Royal T Arabians

What Arabian mare or stallion, past or present, most represents your taste in halter horses, and why?

Our current show horses, Tasheem PMA, Lady Nica SRA, OFW Luxxury, and LAN Chavela, all represent the qualities of show horses that we admire, and their success within the show rings speaks to their style appealing to many.

Do you like and/or participate in the prize money related halter programs and have you personally benefited from them?

We have participated in the Breeding Pays Futurity Program, and have had much success with Tasheem PMA, Lady Nica SRA and OFW Luxxury winning significant prize money in the program.

Do you consider yourself an Arabian breeder? If yes, what is your main focus as a breeder?

We have been breeding now for just shy of a decade, with an average of 3-5 foals per year, so we most definitely consider ourselves breeders, but on a smaller, more “boutique” scale. Our focus is indeed breeding beautiful young horses with type and correct conformation that can compete in the show ring, as well as move on to be riding horses for the future.

Name the three aspects of an Arabian that are the most important to you.

Type and charisma, as well as trainability and the general kindness/personality of the horse.

BREEDING Q&A

CARLINHOS SOUZA | PCF Arabians

What Arabian mare or stallion, past or present, most represents your taste in halter horses, and why?

FA El Shawan is the most beautiful horse I have ever seen.

What is your favorite show destination right now? And do you pay attention to shows around the world?

Scottsdale is the best. It was my childhood dream to show here. In my opinion, it is the best of the best horses that show here.

Name the three aspects of an Arabian that are the most important to you. Attitude, neck/shoulder, and big eyes.

What two or three breeders do you admire and why?

First and foremost, Sam Peacemaker of PCF Arabians. He knows what he’s doing, and I’m constantly impressed with his love for his horses. I also admire Orrion Farms with the number of quality horses they are breeding.

Name three horses from the past that you feel could still win today.

Triana, Hariry Al Shaqab, and RFI Sophie Al Maktub.

Arabian Horse Times | 55 | Halter 2024

What Arabian mare or stallion, past or present, most represents your taste in halter horses, and why?

We have some amazing stallions: KM Bugatti, PA Phoenix Kid, Elle Mustique, Allgood Avicii and others. I’d tell you my reasons, but it would take too long to write!

Do you compete at the shows with the halter horses you breed/ own or both? If yes, which ones?

Both. When you show only what you breed, it can be painful, but the victories make it worthwhile.

Do you like and/or participate in the prize money related halter programs and have you personally benefited from them? Yes, they are so important to our breeders.

What process do you use for selecting stallions for your mares? What would you say about your selection process is working for you?

I believe you have to breed with three decisions in mind: 1). Breed for Scottsdale; 2). Breed for the pure beauty; and 3). Breed for a young halter horse that rides later.

What is your favorite show destination right now? And do you pay attention to shows around the world?

Great horses make great shows.

What do you feel a trainer’s role should be in the Arabian business?

Responsibility. Trainers have much to do about the future of our breed.

What two or three breeders do you admire and why?

Go Sam Peacmaker! You’re killing it! But in house, Joel Desmarteau and Dr. Collins are amazing breeders.

Do we need more breed leadership? If yes, in what way or ways?

Responsible leadership is always necessary. But breeding needs to be a combination of great knowledge, passion of a vision, and luck.

JIM HAGALE

What Arabian mare or stallion, past or present, most represents your taste in halter horses, and why?

Our taste in halter horses is most well represented by those that we own and show. Some of those individuals include accomplished show horses Farouk Palazzotto, Esperranzza, and Queen Ayda FWM.

Do you compete at the shows with the halter horses you breed/ own or both? If yes, which ones?

The horses we’ve competed with thus far are mostly those that we have purchased, as our first foal crop of halter-bred horses just arrived last year. We are eager for those foals to hit the show ring later this year!

Do you like and/or participate in the prize money related halter programs and have you personally benefited from them? We do participate in prize money programs and are founding members of the Breeding Pays Futurity as well. Last year was our first year to compete in the Breeding Pays program within the show ring with our gelding OFW Alikai, who finished in the prize money.

Do you consider yourself an Arabian breeder? If yes, what is your main focus as a breeder?

Our first priority within the community is as breeders. That’s on the forefront for us; breeding an average of 20-25 horses per year for both performance and halter.

Name the three aspects of an Arabian that are the most important to you.

Type and athletic ability are big priorities for us in breeding, but also making sure that all of the purebred horses we breed are undeniably Arabian, regardless of the discipline they are competing in.

ANDREW

What Arabian mare or stallion, past or present, most represents your taste in halter horses, and why?

Exxaltress. She’s a 3-time National Champion and while she is one of the most beautiful Arabian horses I know, her intelligence, kindness, and good energy are a constant reminder of why I love Arabians.

Do you like and/or participate in the prize money related halter programs and have you personally benefited from them?

Yes! I participate in the Scottsdale Signature program and the Breeding Pays Futurity. I’m honored to have won the first ever Breeding Pays Futurity Colt and Filly classes for the owners of OFW Luxxury and Aria La Croixx.

What is your favorite show destination right now? And do you pay attention to shows around the world?

Scottsdale is my favorite, and yes, I travel all over the world to shows and really enjoy that!

What do you feel a trainer’s role should be in the Arabian business?

Trainers have a big responsibility in this business. It is our duty to operate with honesty and a good business acumen, so that horse owners have a rewarding experience showing horses. It takes all trainers at all different levels. The important thing is that we are good people that give good guidance. If that doesn’t happen, people will leave the business, but if it does, the business will grow. n

Karl Hart (1937-2024)

Karl V. Hart, American lawyer, specializing in the field of Commercial Litigation, Agricultural and Equine Law, Construction Litigation, and a partner in Simmons, Hart & Sheehe, has passed.

Born and raised on a crop and Quarter Horse farm in Mayo, Fla., Karl dropped out of high school at 17, enlisted in the Air Force, and spent three years in Europe before pursuing an education at Florida State University where he was awarded a B.S. degree in 1960, then attended graduate school at the University of North Carolina on a Falk Teaching Fellowship. He received his law degree from Harvard School of Law among other accomplishments and was the founding editor of the Harvard Journal of Legislation. Upon graduation, he clerked for a United States District Court Judge for one year and then joined the oldest law firm in South Florida, located in Miami.

Karl and Roxann were married in 1968 and founded Rohara Arabians that same year. Karl practiced as a civil litigation attorney representing some of the largest companies in the world while contributing general advice on the management of the farm, especially regarding financial, breeding and purchasing decisions.

In addition to his law practice, Karl was active in the governing bodies of both the Arabian horse industry and the general horse show world. In 1974 and 1985, he served as president of the Arabian Horse Association of Florida and served six terms as the Arabian Horse Association’s Region 12 Director (1976-1980, 1988-1993 and 1998-2001). He served six three-year terms as a director of the United States Equestrian Federation (formerly the American Horse Shows Association and USA Equestrian), the governing body of equestrian sports (1983-1990, 1993-2000 and 2001-2006); and beginning in 2003, was president of the USA Equestrian Trust, which is the successor of AHSA and USAE in all aspects other than the rule-making body of equine sports. He also worked on many of the standing and special committees of both the International Arabian Horse Association (the forerunner to AHA) and USEF or its predecessors.

IN MEMORIAM

Larry Jerome (1949-2024)

Marilyn Hoffman, a dynamic force and a beacon of light in the world of real estate and philanthropy, passed away on February 19, 2024 at the age of 76.

Born on July 23, 1947, in Dallas, Texas, to George and Sue Mobley, Marilyn used her extraordinary talent and tenacity to graduate from Justin F. Kimball High School in 1964 and pursue her dreams of establishing a successful real estate brokerage, Hoffman International Properties, which she ran with passion and dedication for over 53 years.

She was not just a businesswoman, but a trailblazer, innovator, and philanthropist. Her business acumen was unmatched. Her unique approach to marketing her listings at high-profile events helped her sell some of the most prestigious estates and ranches to renowned personalities in the sports and entertainment world. Marilyn also firmly believed in Albert Einstein’s point that, “Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile,” and she lived this ethos to the fullest, working tirelessly with organizations to fundraise for worthy causes.

Marilyn’s love for life extended to her passion for equestrianism. She enjoyed showing and breeding Arabian horses, many of which earned regional and national championships under her guidance. Her Hoffman International polo team won the Polo America tournament in Las Vegas. Marilyn’s life was a testament to the beauty and resilience of the human spirit. Her legacy continues to inspire, and her memory will forever be cherished.

Hoffman is survived by daughters, Alicia Hipps and Gina Miller; son Lance Hipps; granddaughter, Jordan Neale; stepchildren Susan, John and Edward Hipps, and step-grandchild Kristen Morgan. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husbands Irving Hoffman, Gene Miller, Ed Hipps and Larry Trach.

Lawrence “Larry” Frederick Jerome, 74, of Barron, WI, passed away on January 30, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on May 3, 1949, the second oldest son of 5 children, to Wallace and Marion (Estenson) Jerome in Minneapolis, MN. A naturally gifted agriculturalist, at 19, Larry purchased the family’s current farm where he lived until his death, after graduating from high school in 1967. He married Shelley Miller on July 18, 1970, and raised seven children.

Larry was a farmer and breeder by trade. In addition to raising crops and dairy cows, he developed a world leading 10th Generation Excellent Holstein Herd. His eye for genetics made him a successful visionary, passionate breeder and exhibitor of German Shepherds, Arabian horses, and Holstein cattle. He won multiple awards and his legacy of animals all carry a “J” or Jerland in their name.

Larry’s other talents included a profession in music, playing in local supper clubs and creating the band Intrigue; and using his skills as an ultimate showman to organize, coordinate, and motivate at any event where called upon. He was a respected and hardworking member of the Barron community, and he loved the Barron County Fair, Junior Livestock Program, 4-H, and FFA.

Larry was a lifelong and active member of the First United Methodist Church and believed in making time for fun and travel with his family.

Larry is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shelley (Miller); children Daria (Reid) Stransky, Moriah (Matt) Fischer, Jeremy (Sara), Alicia (Barry) Wirth, Lyndon (Sarah), Sacia Jerome (Theodore Koth), and Indira (Mike) Van Handel; brother Jerry (Billie Jean); sisters Mary Ella, Candace (David) Arp and Julie (Bill) Brown; 24 grandchildren, and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents and in-laws, Eugene and June Miller.

EXPERIENCE BARN

Cedar Ridge Arabians opened their stalls to a jam-packed crowd of newcomers and enthusiasts eager to meet Arabian horses in person and learn about the ins and outs of grooming, bathing, show disciplines and general horse care by hosting an “Experience Barn.” Inspired and supported by the Keystone Experience board, the Ames Family Foundation took the opportunity to create their own experience and share the Arabian horse with the droves of interested spectators at this year’s Scottsdale show.

The barn was led by Kerri Buksa, who spent a few hours per day sharing the horse with hundreds of people. Visitors received coloring books, information packets and resources for finding Arabian farms near them, while also having their questions answered and meeting ambassador horses up close and personal. Scott Benjamin also led educational sessions, while Richard Tirado made many childrens’ and adults’ wishes come true by allowing them personal time to meet, hold and feed treats to the horses. It was a magical experience for many!

Midwest Arabians

VESPASCIAN

Next up ... Midwest Arabians, known for producing many family fun and educational events to inspire future growth within the Arabian horse community. Their open house at the Midwest Training Centre in Scottsdale served up multiple opportunities to view and connect with some of the most beautiful Arabian horses in today’s breed.

Open House & Horse Presentation

RAE-DAWN ARABIANS

Last but not least of Tuesday’s glorious sunny events and holding true to Murray and Shirley Popplewell’s Canadian hospitality, Rae-Dawn Arabians’ open house and horse presentation included a boutique-style cocktail truck, handmade pastries and hired musical talent, making this year’s gathering just what we’ve grown accustomed to at their beautiful farm year after year - intimate, uplifting and leaving us always yearning to see more. The presentation ring was three rows thick to witness Rae-Dawn’s spectacular resident stallions, show string and up-andcomers. All were beautifully handled by Rae-Dawn’s expert team to allow everyone in attendance to take home many images to remember and share with others.

Also during the presentation, Canada’s National Arabian Championship Show was celebrated and recognition given to those who have worked tirelessly over the last two years with Rae-Dawn Arabians and the show commission to put on another successful show.

Ending the evening with an open barn allowed visitors to snuggle the sociable horses before returning home to rest up for another exciting show day.

Horses, Friendship and Fun ...

ROYAL ARABIANS

Horses, Friendship and Fun ... that is what Royal Arabians always promises and comes through with when they open their doors to all. And their Open House on Thursday evening before the final weekend of the Scottsdale show did not disappoint.

The evening was perfect weather-wise to enjoy past and present champions, including Jamaica NA, recently imported from Australia, Halyr Meia Lua, Royal Asad, Aria Rakeem, Royal Atticus, Fuerte, and Haz Al BRSB.

It is Cindy McGown and Mark Davis’ goal to leave you wanting more, so if you didn’t get there early enough to get one of the precious spots on the rail for touching and experiencing the finest the Arabian horse breed has to offer, the barns were open for close-up and personal time with many others just waiting to convince you to join the family.
