How have the AWPA, Breeders Sweepstakes, Scottsdale Signature, MN Breeders and Region 12 Spotlight Western Pleasure Futurities impacted you personally?

It’s another class for the clients to show in—that’s not the biggest thing—and money programs are awesome. People love to show in those classes. People also love to buy a horse that is in those programs because they have a possibility to make some money.

With the western pleasure division having evolved a great deal in the past 20 years, what do you believe has been the most significant change in the western division?

I think that we are breeding better moving horses and better athletes. I believe that overall, the quality has improved.

In the last few years we’ve seen some young horses with more halter-based pedigrees in the western division and having great success. Are you encouraged by having some outside breeding that isn’t quite as specialized?

The halter horses that are doing the best to help us have good performance lines in their pedigree.

We feel it is important from a business standpoint, to have our stallions nominated into these programs and to nominate our in-utero foals every year.

By supporting these programs, it does several things: 1.) Increases exposure for the stallions and adds incentive for mare owners to breed to stallions whose foals can participate and earn in the future prize money programs.

2.) Adds marketability and earnings potential for the nominated horse.

3.) Makes good business sense to be involved in as many futurities as possible.

What type of western pleasure horse are you in the market for (young Jr./Futurity or older Derby/Maturity)? Over the past several years, we have amassed some amazing young show mares with the pedigree, quality, talent and mind-set that we wanted in our breeding program. We then added a couple young stallions to raise up (Cool River Kid & Belvedere J) to add into our program, as well as breeding to several outside stallions, in an effort to get what we want and bring back into the program. The result of this plan is coming to fruition and they are amazing! We are excited about what we are producing for the western division and can’t wait for our youngsters to hit the show ring in the future.

What is the biggest improvement in the training and presentation of national level Arabian western pleasure horses? Training horses is an art and it takes someone with infinite patience and perfect timing to compete at the highest levels in the western division. Peter and I are grateful that our trainer, Jenn Schmitt, is a master at training our horses and making it look easy, as we all know it is not! The most significant improvement is in the horses themselves. Their conformation, ability and athleticism for the task at hand, as well as their beauty, is becoming the common denominator instead of the exception in the western division. The ring is full of great horses, not just a few of them.

With the western pleasure division having evolved a great deal in the past 20 years, what do you believe has been the most significant change in the western division? The emphasis is on the quality of motion and consistency of stride showing in a balanced and pleasant manner vs. the drape of the rein with the horse way behind the vertical and totally intimidated in their carriage and way of going.

Showmanship and horsemanship are important in all divisions, but the western seems to have evolved into a spectator sport because of some of the class calls (maybe not in a good way?).

This has certainly motivated many to accentuate the hand-gallop and their ability to maneuver their horse easily while maintaining light contact and quality of movement at all gaits.

LORI & PETER CONWAY CONWAY ARABIANS CHATFIELD, MN In the last few years we’ve seen some young horses with more halter-based pedigrees in the western division and having great success. Are you encouraged by having some outside breeding that isn’t quite as specialized? What is a “halter-based pedigree”?

A well conformed, good minded, beautiful Arabian that is successful in any division has value and worth in all breeding programs and the ability to produce well a wide variety for halter and performance. Some of the old stallions that crossed over consistently from the halter to performance ring, such as Fame, *Khadraj NA, Versace, Khemosabi, Bay-El Bey, *Bask, *Aladdinn, *Padron, Marwan Al Shaqab and several “Varian” stallions”, are now in the newer “halter-based” pedigrees that are being used today. You still need a good attitude and trainability!

In your opinion, what one horse (sire, broodmare or individual) most exemplifies the contemporary western pleasure horse?

I’m pretty sure that every owner and trainer hopes they have that “one horse.” I know we do with Cool River Kid. By accumulating some “J” ( Jerland Farms) and some “PA” (Palmetto Arabians) with a touch of “PGA/DB” (Petroglyph/Devon Benbrook) and “V” (Varian), with an influx of some Polish lines, we can create a “CA” (Conway Arabians) that will exemplify our ideal contemporary western pleasure horse. Right now, we are excited about our 2019 babies and all of us competing in the show ring with our beautiful western horses.

Dennis & Linda: These programs are an added incentive for people who are considering our stallions when making breeding decisions. We have had horses in all of the programs win prize money which is an incentive when looking to buy or breed. With the rising cost of showing, it is nice to have payback programs like these in place.

Steven: Promoting and nominating our stallions in these programs get more breedings.

What type of western pleasure horse are you in the market for (young Jr./Futurity or older Derby/Maturity)?

Dennis & Linda: Though we are not in the market at this time to purchase additional horses, if a great one comes along, we always look to see if they may fit our program.

How do you find the right horse for your amateurs?

Steven: It takes time; it is a lot of trial and error. I am lucky enough to have amateurs who have a lot of horses to ride, so I can watch and learn their strengths and weakness from each horse.

What is the biggest improvement in the training and presentation of national level Arabian western pleasure horses?

Dennis & Linda: I think the overall training has evolved over the past several years. We have less horses that look intimidated in the ring, and more emphasis on training horses to fit the amateur rider.

Steven: Quality, movement and overall picture.

With the western pleasure division having evolved a great deal in the past 20 years, what do you believe has been the most significant change in the western division?

Steven: The leveling system and age groups has helped, giving everyone a level playing field.

In the last few years we’ve seen some young horses with more halter-based pedigrees in the western division and having great success. Are you encouraged by having some outside breeding that isn’t quite as specialized?

STEVEN SCOGGINS LONG MEADOW ARABIANS ARGYLE, TX

Dennis & Linda: I think as breeders we should always be looking for the best breeding combination, stallion and mare. Going outside of the typical western breeding gives a bigger pool to breed to, but should still be done selectively, keeping mind what the ultimate job is for the horse. We have had great success with our Ever After son, Ever More NA, who is halter bred.

In your opinion, what one horse (sire, broodmare or individual) most exemplifies the contemporary western pleasure horse?

Steven: I am always encouraged to see more horses in the division, and I am glad to see more people breeding for both performance and beauty.

Steven: Monaco Jullyen V. He is great mover, has quality through the roof, is beautiful, and he shows he has the mind to handle both amateur and open classes at a high level.

Dennis & Linda: There are so many different looks in the western division today that it is difficult to pick out one specific individual, but Versace and Sundance Kid V continue to be a big influence in the western division today.

JOE RESER SHAMROCK FARMS MANSFIELD, TX How have the AWPA, Breeders Sweepstakes, Scottsdale Signature, MN Breeders and Region 12 Spotlight Western Pleasure Futurities impacted you personally?

Any time that owners have a chance to go for prize money in any of these programs is a good thing, because it makes them want to participate. My wife is the president of the AWPA. The prize money brings forth a lot of enthusiasm around these classes at horse shows. It has also increased breedings.

I know on the AWPA side, there have been over 400 mares registered each year over the past two years. It has given us a larger pool to choose from.

What is the biggest improvement in the training and presentation of national level Arabian western pleasure horses?

Presentations of the horses have gotten so much better and the trainers have perfected their skills and gotten so much better as well. The horses are being allowed to move out more than they were allowed to previously, and they are being rewarded for it.

In the last few years we’ve seen some young horses with more halter-based pedigrees in the western division and having great success. Are you encouraged by having some outside breeding that isn’t quite as specialized?

I would say yes. I think anytime that you can have a larger pool of breeding to choose from for western, or English horses for that matter, is a good thing. Having a halter community involved and creating some really beautiful western horses is a bonus.

In your opinion, what one horse (sire, broodmare or individual) most exemplifies the contemporary western pleasure horse?

Monaco Jullyen V. I look at Monaco as a beautiful western horse, but I also use him when I look at younger horses. They have some traits of Monaco that I enjoy. Monaco is different, but different is okay. What has made the western division so much fun is how they have changed and portrayed elegance.

With the western pleasure division having evolved a great deal in the past 20 years, what do you believe has been the most significant change in the western division?

Futurity and maturity classes being added to the western division. I feel like this has put a lot more horses in the show ring earlier than they would have been in previous years. It also has made these horses become amateur or youth horses sooner.

Leslie Doran Sommer of Shamrock Farms looks back with a smile, “This journey into the world of western pleasure has been a truly unconventional family adventure. Our stallion, Monaco Jullyen V, personifies this best.” Trusting their trainer, Joe Reser’s advice, they acquired the then 3-year-old Monaco after seeing him for the first time on a Varian video.

“He was a gorgeous, young, bay stallion,” Leslie elaborates, “being put through his paces as a country English or hunter prospect! Despite this, however, Joe realized an incredibly athletic, charismatic and fluid moving future western pleasure super star.” And the rest is history.

“One of our favorite photos of Monaco is from the rear, depicting a horse with astonishing, uplifted movement, an English horse to some!”

Leslie laughs. “But Monaco loves his life as a western horse.” His partner, Joe, developed and encouraged Monaco’s confidence and talents, revolutionizing the western pleasure show pen.

Shamrock Farms’ trainers, Joe and Michele Reser, enthuse, “Our move to Texas last year has taken us to a wonderful place, exciting and new, yet kindred and steadfast. Leslie and Carrie have always held the Ames’ family conviction in high regard. It could be said that Shamrock Farm’s mission is a caboose attached to the Cedar Ridge train.”

Now about a year into a move to Texas, Shamrock Farms continues to flourish, thanks to a bedrock philosophy of family first. Family at Shamrock is rather defined as a hamlet, one need not be blood to be welcomed in!

Shamrock Farm’s clientele share similar convictions. Though many compete in other disciplines, all admire the detailed effort needed to paint that effortless picture of a talented, striking western pleasure mount.

Client Jacqui DePaolo, co-owner of DePaolo Equine Concepts, possesses a broad-based viewpoint, “With our business, I am exposed to many different breeds/disciplines. The western pleasure classes at Arabian shows are some of the most beautiful performances a spectator can witness. The fact that it looks so easy and elegant, yet it takes so much time and effort to get to that point, makes it extremely intriguing. The addition of the AWPA Futurity classes made me want a horse to show, and Joe has worked extremely hard to help me reach that goal! The best part of having horses at Shamrock Farms is that they and the Resers run a first-class program that is focused on the care of the horses first and foremost.”

Lesley Blain Mazur views Arabian western pleasure through a different lens of experience, “I’ve been showing in the saddle seat divisions ever since I began as a walk-trot rider. As I grew up, I came to appreciate nice horses in all disciplines. Until last year, western was one of the few disciplines I had not tried with professional guidance. Now, I’m hooked! I initially wanted to ride with Joe partly because of my friendships in the barn and its proximity. Still, the main reason was because he’s really honed his craft in the discipline, which is why I chose to continue my journey with Joe from afar. He is great at what he does and has really helped me grow as a rider. I’ll never get rid of my jodhpur pants, but I am very happy I’ve added the chaps and bling to my show wardrobe!”

to the winner’s circle. It was an incredible learning experience and a fun start to my marriage with Mike, but the decision to move back to western was an easy one. Western seems to be a better personality fit for me. I would trade the intensity of an English class any day to jog in on a soft, beautifully collected western horse. I love the technical and mental demands of this discipline, feeling like you truly have to separate your mind from your body to create the appearance of everything coming together so effortlessly.” Kimberly continues with a laugh, “And while Mike still likes to give me a hard time about getting back into the show ring on an English horse, he can’t hide the excitement he has over our success with Mmonsignor in the last year, and our new 4-year-old western horse who will soon hit the show ring.”

Then there’s Kimberly Blackburn Beethe, the western pleasure ‘convert’ who sourced from a longtime English riding ‘tribe.’ Kimberly tells her story, “I started in Arabians about 10 years ago and knew immediately I wanted to show western. There is just something about the beauty of an Arabian in western tack that I have always been drawn to. Circumstances in my life changed, however, which took me away from Arabians and showing for a brief period until I met my now husband, Mike Beethe. Being married to a Beethe did not bode well for my western career for obvious reasons, so I embraced the opportunity to learn to ride English from two of the best in the breed, Mike and Shannon. I had an amazing opportunity to show one of Shannon’s all-time favorite horses, Elegant Expression, in H/A Country Pleasure Select Rider with many trips

western again; so, in 2010, I bought my first Arabian western pleasure horse. Each discipline is challenging in its own way (and the versatility of the Arabian breed is one of the things I love most), but I am drawn to the precision and focus that it takes to ride western. If anyone thinks western pleasure is easy, they probably aren’t doing it right. It takes great skill (and practice, and timing, and years of blood, sweat and tears) to do it well. I am always in awe of the perfectly finished Open horses who can go around on a drape, collected, and perform each gait and transition with seemingly invisible cues from the rider. When done correctly, it looks like the rider isn’t doing anything, but he (she) is actually doing a million little things all at once.

“I have been under the guidance of Joe Reser at Setting Sun Stables, now Shamrock Farms, for nine years. I loved showing are what make the successes even more rewarding in the English divisions, but had a desire to show when it finally works out!”

Andrea Martoglio looks back on her years of showing Arabian horses and how she returned to the show pen after a decades long absence, “I showed Arabians in the 70s and then took a lengthy break from the Arabian show pen. I had always had horses and rode, but it was not until 2015 that I purchased a mare intending to show again. I had shown in English, both hunt and saddle seat, pleasure driving, halter, reining and western pleasure. Western pleasure has always been my favorite, so when I decided to show again, this is the discipline I decided to focus on. I was introduced to Joe and Michele Reser by Carrie Fritz and Leslie Doran Sommer at Scottsdale in 2015, and have been with them since. In my eye, a beautiful, great moving young western pleasure horse in the bosal, or a confident, seasoned bridle horse, is my ideal Arabian. I love the fact that western pleasure is very technical and that it is a process to accomplish that great ride. To me, the best western pleasure horses perform seemingly effortlessly and look elegant while doing it.”

Joe; it has been a privilege to ride and learn from him.

We welcomed a filly into the family by Sheer Audacity V six weeks ago. We are very excited for her future with Joe!” The three-leaf clover symbol sits front and center in the world of Shamrock Farms. Co-owner Leslie Sommer explains, “We are blessed with a village of indispensable folks who make Shamrock Farms the happy, fun environment for human and horse.

But, the three balancing leaves of the Shamrock are my mother, Carrie and myself. We all maintain and implement a simple philosophy: The more you give, the more you’ll get, be it friendship, family, horses for humanity … any collaboration created and executed for the greater good.”

Gratitude is a dominant thread sewn through the world of Shamrock Farms. Celebrating the arrival of the first Monaco colt, Leslie pays tribute: “Without my parents, Joe, Michele and our village of friends and clients, there wouldn’t be a Shamrock Farms. Without Shelia Varian’s genius there would be no Monaco Jullyen V. We all wish she could be here to revel in what she created for the western pleasure world of the Arabian horse.” ■

Youth rider Claire Robertson shows, and is even beginning to breed her own western pleasure prospects. She reflects back to her beginnings. “I had my first private riding lesson in January of 2015 with Kathy Braden. It was not only my first lesson, but my first experience with an Arabian.

Several months later, at the age of 12, my parents purchased my first horse, TWC Boom Boom Pow. He was a wonderful teacher, so falling in love with western was easy! Though I now show in several disciplines, I still really enjoy western pleasure because it is always a challenge, and very rewarding when done correctly.

It is the only discipline where having minimum contact and making it look seamless at the same time is expected of you. I am excited to have our stallion Sheer Audacity V (‘Austin’) in training at Shamrock Farms with Assistant Trainer Cody Gillespie with Enzperation XX.

How have the AWPA, Breeders Sweepstakes, Scottsdale Signature, MN Breeders and Region 12 Spotlight Western Pleasure Futurities impacted you personally?

We have won several of the classes and believe they add great value to our breed. I find when shopping for new horses, having them in these programs bumps them up on the list.

What type of western pleasure horse are you in the market for (young Jr./Futurity or older Derby/Maturity)?

We typically look at younger ones, 3 to 5 years of age, but a good horse is a good horse.

What is the biggest improvement in the training and presentation of national level Arabian western pleasure horses?

The quality of the western horse has really improved in my opinion. Improved movers and carrying themselves better. The western horse has really evolved into a true athlete. We now have beauty and athleticism.

With the western pleasure division having evolved a great deal in the past 20 years, what do you believe has been the most significant change in the western division?

They are moving so much finer. The true jog is back and very few are walking up front.

In the last few years we’ve seen some young horses with more halter-based pedigrees in the western division and having great success. Are you encouraged by having some outside breeding that isn’t quite as specialized?

We personally like to breed beauty and movement, and some halter horses are really contributing in a big way.

Well, I’m biased, but Monaco Jullyen V. He is a true mover, beautiful, athletic and long necked.

How have the AWPA, Breeders Sweepstakes, Scottsdale Signature, MN Breeders and Region 12 Spotlight Western Pleasure Futurities impacted you personally?

I am very fortunate to have done very well in the AWPA, Region 12 Spotlight and Scottsdale Signature Futurities, and fully support all the futurity programs. My mare, PA Tantara Always, won the first AWPA Futurity in 2016. Obviously, that had a huge impact on me—definitely one of the most exciting moments of my life! Being focused on western pleasure, I would not even consider breeding to a stallion that was not enrolled in these programs. My goal is to produce beautiful, good movers with trainable attitudes. If they are good enough to make it to these futurities I will be thrilled.

What type of western pleasure horse are you in the market for (young Jr./Futurity or older Derby/Maturity)?

Right now, I have an AWPA contender, Hendrixx WB, who will be shown at U.S. Nationals and I will show him in the AWPA Maturity in Canada. At home I have two beautiful fillies, a yearling and weanling, who I hope will make it to the futurities and maturities when their time comes. I may also be in the market for a Half-Arabian I can show.

What is the biggest improvement in the training and presentation of national level Arabian western pleasure horses?

The horses presented at the national level are incredible now; so well trained and happy doing their job. They are so fine-tuned, and the best horses look effortless.

In the last few years we’ve seen some young horses with more halter-based pedigrees in the western division and having great success. Are you encouraged by having some outside breeding that isn’t quite as specialized?

I think it’s wonderful that halter-based pedigrees are being incorporated by breeders focusing on producing western pleasure horses. Palmetto Arabians is a great example of a breeder that produces horses that win in the halter ring and futurities, then go on to win in the main ring in performance. I like the fact that the AWPA futurity has a higher percentage judged on quality and conformation. I hope that more halter-based stallions will enroll in the program.

That would have to be Monaco Jullyen V for me. The way he carries himself, his transitions, his beauty and manners. The ideal contemporary western pleasure horse should look elegant and perform f lawlessly. I can’t wait to see what Monaco can produce as a sire.

How have the AWPA, Breeders Sweepstakes, Scottsdale Signature, MN Breeders and Region 12 Spotlight Western Pleasure Futurities impacted you personally?

We love all the money programs and try to support them as much as we can. In the past when we would purchase prospects, their eligibility for these programs was a plus. Now when we breed, the foal being eligible for the AWPA is mandatory. For years people were saying we needed the opportunity to win money; now we have that, it’s paramount that we all support these programs.

What type of western pleasure horse are you in the market for (young Jr./Futurity or older Derby/Maturity)?

We have transitioned to breeding most of our western prospects vs. buying them. We don’t push our babies to be ready for the futurities, but if they’re ready, they’re ready. Having them ready for the AWPA is very important to us. The 2-year-old pasture at Shamrock Farms has some pretty impressive talent in it; definitely worth a visit.

What is the biggest improvement in the training and presentation of national level Arabian western pleasure horses?

The western division is loaded with some impressive talent right now. I am always in awe of how these horses can carry themselves at various gaits on such loose contact. I know that some think drape has become excessive, but it is truly taking the performance of these horses to another level. It is just plain hard to pull that kind of carriage off.

The athleticism of these horses is amazing. Nowadays, they go on such loose contact with elevated shoulders and tight cores. It is definitely a well-crafted science.

In the last few years we’ve seen some young horses with more halter-based pedigrees in the western division and having great success. Are you encouraged by having some outside breeding that isn’t quite as specialized?

I think it’s necessary. Western horses can’t just be slow footed. To win, they also have to be beautiful and athletic.

I definitely look at more young prospects with this in mind.

It is always fun to win money, but these classes are becoming highlight moments at National shows, and it is a thrill to be able to have a horse participate. It also gives owners more opportunities for show ring success when it can be hard to break into the top of the class in the regular amateur and open divisions.

What type of western pleasure horse are you in the market for (young Jr./Futurity or older Derby/Maturity)?

I am always looking for great, young prospects. This past year I purchased a young purebred stallion that would give me the opportunity to participate in the AWPA class and later in the Scottsdale Signature and National Maturity classes.

What is the biggest improvement in the training and presentation of national level Arabian western pleasure horses?

Quality of movement.

With the western pleasure division having evolved a great deal in the past 20 years, what do you believe has been the most significant change in the western division?

While my insight is only over the last 10 years, I have seen our western horses become highly specialized for this division, which has been a trend across all divisions.

In the last few years we’ve seen some young horses with more halter-based pedigrees in the western division and having great success. Are you encouraged by having some outside breeding that isn’t quite as specialized?

I am drawn to a beautiful western horse, so I like the idea of bringing the beauty and curves that many halter-bred horses exemplify to the show ring. It is also beneficial to our breed that these halter-bred horses possess the athletic ability and temperament to be successful under saddle as well. It opens up a pool of horses for us to consider and makes our Jr. western classes more competitive and exciting to watch.

Nan: As a stallion owner, these futurities have been integral in highlighting the value of breeding a true western horse. Until I became a stallion owner, I did not really appreciate what owners did to create value for the offspring of their stallions through these futurities and through the marketing of these futurities. Having offspring of my stallion win in these futurities has been a great way to spotlight his babies.

Rob: The money programs have given breeders incentive to show in more shows. The Region 12 Spotlight and AWPA have had a positive impact on creating more value in our young sale horses.

What type of western pleasure horse are you in the market for (young Jr./Futurity or older Derby/Maturity)?

Nan: I just purchased a yearling prospect. I tend to buy young horses that fit my program for breeding as well as performance.

Of course, that means you don’t always get what you want performance-wise, but the quality of animal is still there, and they will excel in their chosen discipline. The money in the futurities is great for the 4- and 5-year-olds.

Nan: I have shown western horses for over 30 years, and I can tell you that the horses that were winning back then would probably not win now. There is a much higher level of training in the horse and in the skill level of the rider. The increase in the quality of the horse is evident in that it has the conformation and strength to do the job it has to do.

Rob: Rounder necks, bigger bodied horses and a quiet disposition.

In the last few years we’ve seen some young horses with more halter-based pedigrees in the western division and having great success. Are you encouraged by having some outside breeding that isn’t quite as specialized?

Nan: If the halter sire were consistently producing a trainable western type and it was something that I needed for my mare, I would consider it.

Rob: The gene pool for western horses is fairly broad.

What is the biggest improvement in the training and presentation of national level Arabian western pleasure horses?

In your opinion, what one horse (sire, broodmare or individual) most exemplifies the contemporary western pleasure horse?

Nan: The trend is toward a more natural mover. The whole picture is just nicer.

Nan: Well, of course I’m going to pick my stallion, Possesion PGA! But to round that out, his sire, Khadraj NA, has produced a consistent western type that has been proven in the ring and in the breeding shed.

Rob: Breeding! Because of the high level of competition and the finish needed to compete even in the futurity and Jr. Horse classes, it is now necessary to have horses that are physically and mentally capable of wearing soft balanced frames, and walk, jog, and lope

Rob: Two horses I feel have dominated the western division lately have been Sundance Kid V and Khadraj NA.

I’m able to take two or more junior western horses to Nationals, and owners have more incentive to show at Scottsdale.

What type of western pleasure horse are you in the market for (young Jr./Futurity or older Derby/Maturity) and how do you find the right horse for your amateurs?

We are in the market for both the futurity and maturity, but it’s getting more difficult every year because of supply and demand. We are forced to buy younger horses and bank on their bloodlines for disposition and willingness.

What is the biggest improvement in the training and presentation of national level Arabian western pleasure horses?

The biggest improvement has been allowing the horses to move forward and cover ground.

With the western pleasure division having evolved a great deal in the past 20 years, what do you believe has been the most significant change in the western division?

Our horses in the western division look more sound and truer gaited.

In the last few years we’ve seen some young horses with more halter-based pedigrees in the western division and having great success. Are you encouraged by having some outside breeding that isn’t quite as specialized?

Not really. I like riding horses bred for their division: short cannon bones, good minds and quiet dispositions. What I miss are the local gene pools we used to draw on as outcrosses.

There is not one horse that does this. I’d say Khadijah and Sundance Kid V have most recently inf luenced the western division, and broodmares as everyone knows, are hugely important in the success of stallions. I’m missing Sheila Varian’s mares.

Neither. We are not buyers, we are sellers.

The competition in the classes is getting deeper, making winning those classes even more special.

The horses are so much more specialized now. You’re not seeing crossover in divisions like you used to. As a result, you’re seeing farms really specialized in the type of horses they like and the horses are getting better.

In the last few years we’ve seen some young horses with more halter-based pedigrees in the western division and having great success. Are you encouraged by having some outside breeding that isn’t quite as specialized?

Yes. It gives us more lines to cross into. It gets us away from the more dominant lines in the western division, i.e. Sundance, Khadraj and Fame. And it gives us more options so we aren’t crossing back into the same lines over and over.

I think having these classes creates a better market for showcasing the young horses, which I enjoy training, and it gives the industry another outlet to encourage clients to invest in breeding and/or purchasing young horses, getting them out there early to show and potentially win some money with them. It also gives trainers the opportunity to have multiple successful young horses in a variety of classes as opposed to just the futurity and junior horse classes.

How do you find the right horse for your amateurs? In the market today it has gotten difficult. There are not as many horses to choose from and you need a horse with a personality to match your client based on their confidence and experience. Some amateurs can ride on a drape and think nothing of it, while others are timid and uncomfortable with the feeling of a drape. New clients that come in, and often loyal clients that have been competing for years, question why the winning horses are always the ones with a drape even at detriment of the true movement or happiness of the horse. They can get discouraged with feeling unsuccessful in the show arena due ...

What is the biggest improvement in the training and presentation of national level Arabian western pleasure horses? … to a lack of drape even if they have had a beautiful, pleasurable ride with no mistakes. We have done a disservice to our industry by creating an ideal that only horses that can drape are valuable. People do not have as much expendable money and we have a lot of horses out there that could be athletic and competitive enough if they weren’t so dependent upon a large drape. Our amateurs would be more widely successful as well, instead of just a small group. We need to make improvements to draw people in, not drive them away. There is more focused breeding for the western horse and this ...

With the western pleasure division having evolved a great deal in the past 20 years, what do you believe has been the most significant change in the western division? …in turn, has made the quality of training and the presentation of those horses improve.

The junior horse division has gotten bigger and stronger as well, as more of the classes and shows being catered to the amateur become successful. As the amateur divisions evolve, we need to make sure more amateurs can be successful overall, not just a small group of them. The more success we can bring to amateurs overall, the more growth we will see within the industry.

In the last few years we’ve seen some young horses with more halter-based pedigrees in the western division and having great success. Are you encouraged by having some outside breeding that isn’t quite as specialized?

Yes, I am encouraged by outside breeding. In my career I have had a lot of halter bred horses that are high quality through looks and movement. I have had a lot of success with these horses over the

As an industry, we could work together for the betterment of the breed overall; we can give horses a chance to be successful where they are most talented, and with amateurs suited to those talents that can be invited in to purchase those horses.

In your opinion, what one horse (sire, broodmare or individual) most exemplifies the contemporary western pleasure horse?

I think it is difficult to say one stud or dam really made a huge difference in the western pleasure horses of today. The Varian bred horses and what Sheila has done for the western type through her breeding program over the years has influenced generations of high quality, true moving western style horses. There are a lot of great horses out there, sires and dams a like, but I think it’s more about the breeder and how they have shaped the modern western horse.

We need to focus on encouraging all breeders to really work together across all styles, halter and performance, to keep improving the breed.

How have the AWPA, Breeders Sweepstakes, Scottsdale Signature, MN Breeders and Region 12 Spotlight Western Pleasure Futurities impacted you personally?

With the western pleasure division having evolved a great deal in the past 20 years, what do you believe has been the most significant change in the western division?

Larry: I have participated in and promoted the Scottsdale Signature, Breeders Sweepstakes and MN Breeders Futurities since 2005, and the AWPA since its inception with Twin XX horses being successful in all of them. These programs have helped me to make good breeding decisions and they have provided me with good positive feedback.

Larry: I think the expansion and addition of programs such as the AWPA, Performance Sweepstakes, Performance Signature and others have increased participation and created great excitement for the western discipline.

Dan & Judy: They have opened up a whole new world for not only breeding for western performance horses but marketing to amateur riders. I think they have really helped the trainers in our industry develop that portion of their clientele.

What type of western pleasure horse are you in the market for (young Jr./ Futurity or older Derby/Maturity)?

Larry: I breed and purchase breeding stock such as the purchase I made of my foundation mare, Beautiful Juell V, which I purchased from Sheila Varian as a 3-year-old.

Dan & Judy: We are continually breeding for young western horses that will also go on to the Maturity and stay in the show ring to carry their amateur and junior riders for lots of years.

How do you find the right horse for your amateurs?

Dan & Judy: We look at pedigrees to help determine the temperament of each horse as well as how they have been started in their training. While we are all looking for a young western horse, I think there is great value in finding the more seasoned show horse to help teach a new amateur rider.

What is the biggest improvement in the training and presentation of national level Arabian western pleasure horses?

Larry: I don’t think I can make a good evaluation in this area since I have only been involved with western pleasure for the past 10 years, but the increased participation and increased spectator excitement should be good indications that any changes have been greatly successful.

Dan & Judy: We are so happy to see the horses in the show ring moving more naturally; an honest ground covering walk, a slow soft jog and honest lope. We still need to work on the extreme draped reins, but overall, the western horses have come a long way.

Dan & Judy: We are happy to see the diverse bloodlines in both the purebred and Half-Arab divisions. I am also happy to see the western discipline expanding to the working western discipline. So many of our western horses are such great athletes, that they can go on to the other western disciplines.

In the last few years we’ve seen some young horses with more halterbased pedigrees in the western division and having great success. Are you encouraged by having some outside breeding that isn’t quite as specialized?

Larry: I have always believed that a great Arabian horse should be able to be successful in halter and performance and I have always tried to breed to that end. The dam of Enzperation XX, Canadian National Champion Western Pleasure Open, was Olivia D, U.S. National Champion Halter Mare AAOTH, and Enzperation XX was the 1st Place Scottsdale Yearling Colt.

Crown Juell XX, 2-time U.S. National Champion Western Pleasure in 2018, was a Top Ten Scottsdale Signature Auction Yearling Colt for me in 2014.

Dan & Judy: I don’t like to think of a horse as a halter or performance horse. We have always bred for a complete horse. There should be no reason a Nationally winning halter horse can’t perform. A great example of this is IXL Noble Express. He was a National Champion Halter stallion as well as a National Champion Park Horse. The mare Ericca, a double National Champion. How about Vicario, Top Ten Halter Stallion and National winning western horse. And for sure, Crown Juell XX, who was a Scottsdale winning halter horse and recently double National Champion.

In your opinion, what one horse (sire, broodmare or individual) most exemplifies the contemporary western pleasure horse?

Larry: I could not really choose since I haven’t seen many of the great ones, but if pressed, I would probably choose one of my own.

Dan & Judy: While you can’t deny the success of the Sundance Kid V and Khadraj horses, it would be wrong to not recognize other horses that have continually produced winning western horses, such as the broodmare of the year, Beautiful Juell V.

EQUINE ATHLETE VETERINARY SERVICES JESSICA HILL

MICHIGAN, TEXAS, CALIFORNIA How many shows do you attend a year? How many of those are Arabian shows, and which ones do you look forward to the most?

Equine Athlete Veterinary Services attends approximately 40 horse shows per year, across 18 states and Canada. The Arabian show circuit makes up around 75% of the shows we attend, with the balance consisting of Saddlebreds, Quarter Horse western performance and barrel racing, as well as Hunter/Jumper.

Every show brings its own excitement and challenges; however, we really enjoy Youth Nationals and U.S. Nationals. It’s rewarding to see the horses and exhibitors compete in the classes they have been working so hard towards all season. Scottsdale is also an exciting time of year, with the debut of many new horses and the anticipation of the show season ahead.

Do you offer any products/services that you feel are underutilized or a favorite of yours that you feel strongly about? We are very excited with the results we are seeing using RenoVo (an amnionbased product under the umbrella of regenerative medicine) and the RLT regenerative laser – commonly used together in complex soft tissue injuries. Veterinary-guided rehabilitation with soft tissue injury recoveries is something we feel has been underutilized in the past, however, we have seen a steady increase in this area over the last few years, and the results have not disappointed.

Which products/services do you offer that your Arabian clientele use more frequently than other breeds? Are there any products that all breeds use that Arabian customers use differently?

Though products and services don’t necessarily vary much across the different breeds, we do recognize the commitment and love Arabian owners have for their horses. The proactive approach in the management of their horses provides them the opportunity to safely and happily reach their full potential. As veterinarians, it’s a great feeling to have the opportunity to work with those who understand and appreciate that the horse always comes first.

How does the Arabian industry differ compared to other breeds that you work with? One of the biggest differences with the Arabian breed is the versatility of the horse. From pleasure horses, to working cow horses, all the way to halter horses, it not only keeps things interesting at a show, it also constantly challenges us to be better horsemen and veterinarians.

What do you appreciate most about the Arabian community?

Though the Arabian industry shares many qualities with other breeds, what we appreciate most is the sense of community and charity. Despite the strong spirit of competition, it is always enjoyable to see the camaraderie and true desire to help those in need amongst the competitors, breeders and trainers. Through such avenues as the Arabian Horsemen’s Distress Fund, Warrior Horses, Friends Of Vail, and the Arabian Foundation Youth Scholarship Program, the Arabian community is a step above the rest.

Are there any trends or changes that you’ve seen evolve in what your customers are looking for/purchasing? Over the past few years, we have noticed a trend in buyers approaching a prepurchase evaluation (PPE) more like a home inspection, rather than a “pass/fail” situation. Just as every horse is different, so are the preferences and requirements for every horse owner. Buyers are using the PPE as more of a baseline for the health of the animal they are buying, and depending on how in-depth the evaluation, as an effort to discover any underlying issues that may need to be managed over the career of the horse.

What is your personal involvement in the horse industry? We are involved as breeders and exhibitors of Arabians and Half-Arabians in multiple disciplines; breeders and exhibitors of English sport horses, and exhibitors of AQHA western performance horses.

Total number of booths with four of us working them, is 33; Bobbie and I do 18 ourselves. We currently only do the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show; it is a very nice show, and look forward to it and the Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio.

Do you offer any products/services that you feel are underutilized or a favorite of yours that you feel strongly about?

Our custom hats are by far my favorite, but we also do a very good job on renovation of old hats. That, I think, is sometimes overlooked.

Which products/services do you offer that your Arabian clientele use more frequently than other breeds? Are there any products that all breeds use that Arabian customers use differently?

All breeds buy our custom hats; they are the best in the industry.

How does the Arabian industry differ compared to other breeds that you work with?

Arabian clients used to be more conservative, but they are stepping out of the box and letting us design more fancier custom work for them, thanks to the McNutts, Kathie Hart, and a few others that are helping us in that area.

What do you appreciate most about the Arabian community?

Their shows are very professionally run. We are very impressed with the way they are organized and ran in the vendor area.

Are there any trends or changes that you’ve seen evolve in what your customers are looking for/purchasing?

The number one thing riders want is one-of-a-kind style, more personalization, the perfect fit, cost and customer service.

What is your personal involvement in the horse industry?

I have been in business for going on 30 years. I have seen the industry change from a conservative industry to more personal touches and stepping out of the box, not only in design, but also colors.

PERFECT PRODUCTS, LLC MOLLY MORGENSTERN REYNOLDSBERG, OH How many shows do you attend a year? How many of those are Arabian shows, and which ones do you look forward to the most? The Perfect Products business model depends on attending as many shows as possible.

We strive to meet riders and trainers from all disciplines to learn about what they need from their nutraceuticals and how we can help them maximize their horse’s performance.

Arabian shows are a central focus of our show roster. We especially love Nationals and Scottsdale. The horses are typically at their best at those events!

Do you offer any products/services that you feel are underutilized or a favorite of yours that you feel strongly about? Our Gastroease paste is my personal favorite product and is the most complete gastrointestinal product on the market. It was designed to manage all facets of gut health, including foregut, hindgut, and stomach care. The active ingredients we included in the product are some of the most advanced science available. We took special care to ensure that the ingredients offer stomach comfort for fast relief of symptoms while also making sure to offer long term health benefits where there might be stomach abrasions or unhealthy tissue. Likewise, we have addressed digestion concerns and gut flora health within the product.

Gastroease is offered in a paste and a powder. I love the paste for shows. It works quickly and offers a good deal of comfort to my horses as I continue to increase the pressure on them during pre-performance workouts.

How does the Arabian industry differ compared to other breeds that you work with? Arabians are innately intelligent horses; they forget very little and are often very sensitive. It’s a real opportunity to become part of a management program designed to hone the focus of a high energy, intelligent animal, without compromising their spirit or their enthusiasm for their “job.”

What do you appreciate most about the Arabian community? One of the things we most admire about the Arabian community is how “hands on” everyone is with the preparation of the horses. Trainers, amateurs, and grooms are all a part of their daily care and management.

Trainers in the Arabian community typically can tell you within a single ride, sometimes a single pass, how their horses are feeling, what is troubling them, or if they are ready for the show ring.

In the spirit of “partnership,” Perfect Products seeks that kind of thorough insight to better build products that satisfy the needs of the horsemen involved with the preparation.

Are there any trends or changes that you’ve seen evolve in what your customers are looking for/purchasing? Perfect Products has been in business for nearly 15 years. Over that time, we have improved our technology and are more sophisticated with our offerings. These improvements have been in response to a maturing market. Pain management, soft tissue and back soreness, gastrointestinal care … even horses that have trouble sweating, all of these problems have been identified as real issues faced by the horsemen that care for high end show horses. We have dedicated ourselves to meeting such demands and exceeding expectations with real products that produce real results.

What is your personal involvement in the horse industry? My family and I come from the Quarter Horse side of the horse industry. We have shown pleasure and all-around horses since I was a little kid. Today, I show reining horses and focus primarily on the NRHA shows.

How many shows do you attend a year? How many of those are Arabian shows, and which ones do you look forward to the most? Probably about eight, and all of them are Arabian shows, except for one out in Las Vegas; a reining show called the High Roller. I think my favorite is Scottsdale.

Do you offer any products/services that you feel are underutilized or a favorite of yours that you feel strongly about? No. Which products/services do you offer that your Arabian clientele use more frequently than other breeds? Are there any products that all breeds use that Arabian customers use differently? I sell real estate and horse insurance for Jarvis, both which are definitely utilized by Arabian clients.

How does the Arabian industry differ compared to other breeds that you work with? I work with the Arabian industry more than other breeds, and also with clients who are not in the horse industry. I truly just love the Arabian horse and the Arabian horse industry, but I love to work with all people.

What do you appreciate most about the Arabian community? Recently, it seems as if the Arabian industry is working more in unison, and I’m glad to see that.

What is your personal involvement in the horse industry? I show horses as an amateur in several divisions: Western Pleasure, Reining, Ranch Riding and Western Dressage.

How have the AWPA, Breeders Sweepstakes, Scottsdale Signature, MN Breeders and Region 12 Spotlight Western Pleasure Futurities impacted you personally? On several fronts. They have increased participation in the show ring which has affected me directly through clients and additional horses. They have given people more of an incentive to breed and also given us the opportunity to breed and have our horses be worth more money. Plus, they are just fun classes to show in and they create more excitement, which we definitely need.

What is the biggest improvement in the training and presentation of national level Arabian western pleasure horses? It has been this way for a while, but I think we have the best moving western pleasure horses in the horse industry.

Our horses are more balanced for your moving and are much more pleasing to watch than in other disciplines.

With the western pleasure division having evolved a great deal in the past 20 years, what do you believe has been the most significant change in the western division? I think it’s just gotten more and more competitive and horses are carrying themselves more consistently, so they are moving better. They are going without being held into a position, so they are assuming a position and are able to go on a looser rein because they are so well trained. This was evident 20 years ago but not as widely spread as today. We have some great horse trainers in our breed, and it’s getting better and more competitive all the time.

In the last few years we’ve seen some young horses with more halterbased pedigrees in the western division and having great success. Are you encouraged by having some outside breeding that isn’t quite as specialized?

Yes, it’s always great to have a wider gene pool and the one thing that we try to cling to is that these are Arabian horses and the form to function aspect of breeding continues to ring true. We don’t have a lot of what you see in other western breeds where their disciplines are specialized and there’s no crossover.

For example, today in the Quarter Horse breed, you would never see a halter horse or a horse with halter breeding cross over into western pleasure. That’s how it was in the past but not today for them. But it is for us and I think it speaks well for our horses and breeders that there is crossover.

With the western pleasure division having evolved a great deal in the past 20 years, what do you believe has been the most significant change in the western division?

Priscilla: We see a lot of buyers that are shopping specifically for AWPA futurity prospects. Also, we purchase AWPA Auction breedings at often a very good price. So that program specifically has added a lot of benefit to us at GRK Farms.

Priscilla: I think that our farriers play a huge part in helping our horses be their best. They have stepped up their game as have we trainers.

Gary: We are specially breeding each year with AWPA in mind.

The competition is always extremely tough, but that’s what makes it exciting. And the purse is also appealing!

How do you find the right horse for your amateurs?

Priscilla: We try to breed it here at GRK Farms. That way I can sell horses to my clients that I know very well. I am also always watching horses show and keeping an eye on the ones I really like.

What type of western pleasure horse are you in the market for (young Jr./Futurity or older Derby/Maturity)?

Gary: We concentrate on the young Jr./Futurity western pleasure horses. That’s a good market for us to sell young quality western pleasure horses.

Gary: Training has improved across the spectrum of the programs, and the quality of the trainers is very competitive!

In the last few years we’ve seen some young horses with more halter-based pedigrees in the western division and having great success. Are you encouraged by having some outside breeding that isn’t quite as specialized?

Priscilla: I am. We need some new bloodlines! We currently have some halter bloodlines that are producing some great performance horses; Ever After NA and Kanz Albidayer are two that come to mind.

Gary: That’s true, there has been some beauty added along the way.

But as in every discipline, the horse must be built for their job!

In your opinion, what one horse (sire, broodmare or individual) most exemplifies the contemporary western pleasure horse?

What is the biggest improvement in the training and presentation of national level Arabian western pleasure horses?

Priscilla: For me, it is Monaco Jullyen V. His beauty, athletic ability and trainability are all over the top.

Priscilla: The horses are so strong and beautiful, and the trainers are so talented. The presentations and training just get better and better.

Gary: We have our multi-National Champion Mare Billie The Kid GRK, who has started her breeding career. Her first two foals are on the ground and we can’t wait for them to grow up and make mommy proud!

Gary: We have concentrated our bloodlines and breeding to proven lines, such as Sundance Kid V, Khadraj NA, Jullyen El Jamaal, etc.
