A Youth National

Championships Preview by Christy Egan

In June, the entire Arabian horse younger set gears up and looks forward to the Youth

National Championships, held in Albuquerque, New Mex., for one final year before the

2016 move to Oklahoma City. This 23rd edition of the show will run from Saturday, July

18th through Saturday, July 25th at Expo, New Mexico. Entries for Youth Nationals in recent years have been running around 800 horses, though most of these noble equines

wear diverse gear as mounts for two or more youngsters. Classes run from 8 a.m. well into

darkness daily, with the exception of Wednesday evening, which is the official midweek

night off. Judges for this year’s show include Ted Carson, Greg Gallún, Karen Homer-

Brown, Jan Decker, Connie O’Brien, Brian Scoggins, Dianne Grod, Dale Pederson, Claudia

Roland, Katie Beck, Lori Conway, Joyce Thomas, Peggy Klump, and Louise Koch. The

judges are divided into four, three-judge panels, plus dressage and cutting. There are over 150

classes at the 2015 Youth Nationals, among them 10 brand new classes this year for English

Trail, Sport Horse Show Hack, Sport Horse Under Saddle, and five new classes for reiners.

A Youth National Preview Speaking of judges, one of last year’s Youth show highlights was the Judge’s School Seminar held in Youth Hall. Back by popular demand and slated to be held on Friday, July 17th from 9 to 11 a.m., the seminar is hosted by Stan Morey and answers lots of FAQ’s about what and why judges do what they do. The seminar will be live stream broadcast on Arabian Horse Global. “We had great attendance at last year’s seminar,” says Morey. “It’s a great conversation for anyone who wonders what goes through judges’ minds, what they are looking for from both horse and rider, and what the Judging School is all about. You can’t get a Judge’s card until you are 23, but we have people attend the school beginning at age 18. The seminar includes an informal power point presentation and a Q and A opportunity at the end.” Stan Morey has been the AHA Judges and Stewards Commissioner since 2009. The 2015 Judges and Exhibitors School will be held December 3rd through the 5th at the Hilton Scottsdale Resort in Scottsdale, Ariz.

In addition to the seminar, the APAHA Clinic that kicks off the show on Thursday afternoon, and the AHYA Convention on Friday, Youth Nationals has many delightful event that have as much to do with a good time as they do with horses. There’s the Arabian Horse Hippology contest, the Stick Horse Workshop and contest, the Flying Pig Toss fundraiser, the Dog Costume contest, (closely followed by the Tenth Annual Dog Races), and the Parade of Regions, sort of a Rose Bowl Parade on golf carts, that will ref lect this year’s international theme of “Horsin’ Around The World”. The Parade of Regions is scheduled to be held out on the roads of the fairgrounds this year at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday the 19th, instead of in the arena. The Stall Decorating contest will be judged for the first time by the AHYA Board of Directors on Monday, with awards center ring in Tingley on Wednesday, the 22nd. The annual raff le is offering a Sport Utility Golf Cart this year instead of a horse trailer. Tickets are $50. Contact Brena at: youth@arabianhorses.org, or go to Youth Activities during the show.

A Youth National Preview

This is just the teaser. There are parties, planned and unplanned, there are pink flamingoes that just suddenly appear all over tack rooms; and the water fights … did we mention the water fights? Whatever time you may still have that’s free, get out and enjoy Albuquerque’s Southwest ambiance and restaurants, Old Town and the Sandia Peak Tramway up the mountain. Nearby, 400-year-old Santa Fe is a not-tobe-missed trip an hour’s drive north. Don’t worry, you’ll be able to keep up, our Youth National Championships is a very modern, computer age show, as befits the average age of those in attendance. You can follow the show by watching the daily broadcast on your laptop, I-Pad or I-Phone on www.ArabianHorseGlobal.com, by visiting the AHA #Blueroom across from the AHYA booth, or by following on Instagram @arabianhorseyouth, Twitter @AHYneigh or Facebook #ahaYNL15. Good luck and have fun! ■

A Judges Perspective:

Karen Homer-Brown 2015 YOUTH NATIONALS JUDGE

Number of years judging: I started judging local and 4-H shows when I was 16. At the age of 18, I started learner judging AHSA/USEF shows. At the age of 21, I acquired my first license from the AHSA/USEF. I have held a license with the USEF for 38 years. I currently carry 14 licenses with 4 sanctioned organizations. What disciplines will you be judging at the 2015 Arabian Youth Nationals? I have been invited to judge In-Hand, Showmanship, English and Saddle Seat Equitation. If you were to give advice to a youth exhibitor on dealing with show ring nerves, what would you tell them? I remember when David O’Connor, past president of the USEF, Eventer, coach, trainer and Olympic Gold Medalist, was asked that same question at the Youth Convention at the AHA Youth Nationals several years ago. Actually, the question was, “did he ever get butterflies.” His response was priceless, and one that I will remember forever. He stated to the young equestrian, “Yes, I do get butterflies all the time, but the trick is to train them how to fly in formation.” The thing about nerves is to learn to control them through practice, and listening and learning from your instructors, coaches and trainers. Your support team is very important, but most importantly, get to know and learn from your partner … your horse. Learn to understand and read your horse. Learn to listen and be able to communicate with them; and learn to feel and understand their every move. But most importantly, learn to enjoy the moment, the ride and the journey. What advice could you give an exhibitor on ring space and making sure they are being seen by the judges? I would suggest that the exhibitor understand “Ringmanship” and that they consider finding an open space for their horse and closer to 100

youth

the rail, rather than the center of the ring. Horses show well when they are not crowded and heading towards other horses. Horses will wear their ears better, move more freely and not be preoccupied about being crowded, pushed, bumped into or having their tails stepped on. I personally have a hard time when exhibitors are told to ride in the center and close to the judge. It is actually harder to see an entry. For example, please put your hand way out in front of you. You will see the details of your hand well. Now take your hand and put it close to your face, and it becomes a blur. That is what happens when you get to close to the judges. Find a position close to or on the rail, and stay by yourself and you will definitely be seen and have an opportunity for a good performance. When the line-up is asked for, do you watch the horses that are making passes or do you start organizing your notes from the class? When the class is called to the line-up, I am finalizing my placings. I judge the class while it is on the rail. I don’t mind one trip around, but after that, I want to see the exhibitor come to the line-up. What advice can you give in regards to proper show ring attire? I personally like to see attire a little more conservative and blend with the horse. When attire becomes too gaudy, then the first thing my eye goes to is the attire, and sometimes one can lose the horse. Remember, we are here because of the horse. As a judge, what is your best advice you can give on what not to do in the show ring? Please remember to have fun, be well prepared, know your partner, support your friends and enjoy the journey! Also, I want to wish everyone the very best at this year’s Youth Nationals. I am so excited to be a small part of the show, see wonderful combinations, and work with a great commission, show staff and judge’s panel. ■

2015 Youth Judges

Connie O’Brien

2015 YOUTH NATIONALS JUDGE Number of years as a judge … 30 years. Name some of the major shows that you have judged throughout your career. I’ve judged multiple U.S. Nationals, Scottsdale, Canadian Nationals, the Arabian Breeders World Cup in Las Vegas, and many Regional shows. For a first time Youth National exhibitor, what advice could you give them in dealing with the pressure of the show? Be prepared and organized before you arrive at the show. Focus on your own performance and how you and your horse perform well in the arena; don’t spend time and energy worrying about your competitors. Enjoy the amazing experience of participating in a national show. You will be judging the working western classes at Nationals, which are judged on points. What guidance can you give to a rider in how to maximize getting the most points? It really helps your score to try and avoid penalties. Also, remember judges are trained to give credit when a maneuver is performed correctly and there is a higher degree of difficulty or excellence. For example, if you can do something faster, don’t sacrifice the correctness in the execution of the maneuver. And each maneuver is judged individually, so if you make a mistake, forget it and move on to the next maneuver or task. In performance classes, exhibitors may feel that the only way they can be seen is by riding in the center of the arena, but from someone standing right in the middle of it, what is your view? I dislike exhibitors riding around the gazebo, but I don’t penalize them for where they choose to show; it is not part of the judging specifications. However, if the horse isn’t guiding well and their ring position makes me uncomfortable, it can hurt the exhibitor in their placement. Also, it is not an advantage for exhibitors to show close to the middle, it is more difficult to see them close up. I watch those exhibitors more in the corners from a distance or coming down the other rail in order to evaluate the total picture. Ideally, riders that have great ring mastership command the arena. I always say, show your horse to its best advantage and the judges will find you. When an exhibitor makes a mistake, they can panic and stop riding. What encouragement can you give to one that is in this position? Anyone who has shown a horse

has had this experience. Some great victories have been won after a mistake. Performance classes are judged as a whole, from when the gate closes, until the judge’s card is turned in. The quality of the entire performance is considered. Working western classes are scored on individual maneuvers, so as an exhibitor, you have a chance to make up for mistakes in either case. Stay in the moment, move on past the mistake, and concentrate on doing what you need to be doing, not what you did before. At the very least, you will feel good about finishing a class well. Best case scenario, you find a way to win. On the flip side—sitting in the stands—spectators can see that a horse has had difficulties or made a mistake, yet will receive an award. Can you share with the spectator how this can happen, so they have a better understanding of judging? Great question. As judges, we are required to consider the finer points and make sure the best horses win. Sometimes this means that average does not trump excellence. In other situations, a steady performance by a lesser quality horse can beat a better one. In these cases, judges have to decide how the mistakes of a great horse compare to other performances in the class, using the specifications for the class being judged, and reach a decision. As a judge, what is your biggest pet peeve? I don’t have a pet peeve, but I would say one of the worst things we see is horses exhibited that are sore. Always put the horse’s well-being first. What do you look forward to most as a judge at the 2015 Youth Nationals? Having judged the show previously, I know I will be seeing many great horses and riders. Youth Nationals is a high caliber show with memorable performances, and it is a great honor to judge the show. Everyone knows how perceptive the Arabian horse is. Young people have a nature Arabians can relate to and something very special happens when you see talented kids riding great horses. It is also a pleasure to see kids who are just beginning to present horses at nationals, even if they are not quite ready to win prizes. I hope all riders at Youth Nationals will enjoy the experience and grow from it. That’s what being young is all about … having fun, learning, and growing. Take it all in! ■ Volume 46, No. 1 |

Betsy Carlson In my last year as a youth rider, I want to give a special thank you to all who have been involved in my life throughout the years. To my friends and family, thank you for your unwavering support throughout my youth career and for always being there for me through the good and not-so-good times. I love you all so much. To all of my coaches and trainers along the way, thank you for always preparing me and my horses to be the best we can be; I am forever grateful for the countless hours we have spent together. Finally, thank you to my incredible horses. This year, I have two of the best teammates I have ever had the opportunity to ride and show. Sam and Ghaza, I love you two so much!

GRADUATING SENIORS Gabrielle Aguirre

Farm/Trainer: Kiesner Training, Joel and Ashton Kiesner Age: Graduating Senior Parent(s): Gerry and Kelli Aguirre If I could rwide my horse anywhere in the world, I would choose ... the beach in my backyard in sunny Jupiter, FL. If I could go to any Arabian horse event in the world, I would go to ... Youth Nationals because the quality of horses is equally as good as U.S. Nationals, and the friendly competition forces everyone to perform at their best. The similarities between my horse and I are ... we both love what we do, she loves to work and I love to ride, and we also commit 110% to everything we do. If I could repeat any day in my life, I would choose … the day I won a national championship in the H/A English 14-18 on one of my favorite horses ever, Lady Marmalade. When I grow up, I want to be … an equine veterinarian. My role model is… my mom, because of the extreme passion she has for the things she loves.

Jordan Alvey After I graduate, I plan to … attend the University of Georgia and study animal health. Do you hope to keep horses in your future? How? I plan to keep horses in my future forthe rest of my life. By attending college in the state of Georgia, I will be much closer to my horses in Knoxville, TN, where I can ride them frequently.

Jordan Alvey

Farm/Trainer: Showtime Training Center, Tish Kondas and Carla Schiltz Age: Graduating Senior Parent(s): Judi and Tim Alvey If I could ride my horse anywhere in the world, I would choose ... Italy. It’s somewhere that I’ve always wanted to go, so it would just make it 100 times better if I got to take my horse with me. If I could create a video game, it would be about … future career paths. It would allow the players to choose a career path that they think they would like to pursue. Then the players could see if they really would enjoy doing it for the rest of their lives or not. If I could go to any Arabian horse event in the world, I would go to ... the Arabian Celebration Horse Show. I’ve heard there is absolutely no better feeling than trotting into Freedom Hall.

The similarities between my horse and I are ... that we both like to eat twisters and drink sprite. Also, we both have goofy personalities. If I could repeat any day in my life, I would choose … the day I got my first horse, Sunny, for Christmas. He was the best gift I have ever received. I was beyond shocked to find out that I was getting my very own horse at 9 years old. When I grow up, I want to be … someone that loves unconditionally, cares for everyone, and gives to those in need. I’m not sure of what job I want to pursue in life, but I am sure of who I want to be—happy while making the people I come in contact with happy, also. My role model is … definitely my mom, because she has become a successful business woman by working hard. She has a huge heart and will go out of her way to help people in need. She is constantly putting her family and friends before herself. After I graduate, I plan to … continue going to the University of West Georgia. Do you hope to keep horses in your future? How? I know I will keep horses in my future. I’m privileged to have parents that love all of my horses as much as I do. We are those people who buy horses and become so attached, that we never sell them. Luckily, I picked a college that is only 20 minutes away from STC.
