Re-evaluating Industrialisation of sensitive coastal regions – A case of Hazira in Surat Gujarat.
Hazira is located at the edge of the Tapi river estuary - a tidal estuary defined by its funnel shape, tidal inundations, shoals, Salt marshes, and mangroves. Its proximity to the sedimentary basin and strategic placement along the Gulf of Khambat also makes it ideal for industrialization. Over the last 35 years Hazira has seen steady industrial growth and today it houses some of the county’s largest heavy industrial precincts.
The industries are slowly but steadily choking the natural ecology of the region. Mangrove bio-diversity is lost, forest covers are receding, and people living in the vicinity are suffering from chronic ailments. The river edge has been blocked away and all socio-cultural connections to the river have been permanently lost.
Re-evaluation of the industrial activities is required to restore the riparian health, restore the mangroves, and re-connect people with the river.
