Diving into the glorius legacy of Sikh Culture The History of Sikhs is typically divided into six periods: Guru period ,Post Guru period , Misl period, Maharaja Ranjit Singh period and British period.The museum had to be designed in Amritsar. Keeping in mind the footfall of tourists in the city, the design required to be expansive in nature with crowd relief areas.

Designing for the emotional value of people in Dharavi Key principles of Jugaad such as “do more with less” or “think and act with Flexibility” resonate with key ideas of sustainability. In most slums Jugaad is literally a way of life. From recycling plastic bottles, wasteful electronic parts discarded metal parts, these slum dwellers use their imagination to make something out of these discarded objects. Rightly put by the Guardian; Waste not want not defInes the lifestyle of these slums.

What if the concept of Jugaad could be scaled up to do more; to make a difference?

What if one could employ Jugaad to enhance the cultural or social aspect of a particular space?

What if we as architects could design an object of happiness for the slum dwellers?

Meet C# Slum orchestra. Recycled beat box. Wheel of happiness.

C# is a musical instrument made from those every day “useless” objects found on streets through Jugaad. A melodious solace to the lives of these slum dwellers. A symbol of hope ,a harbinger of happiness, C# would not only change the way lack luster slum spaces would behave but also inspire further works of “JUGAAD” urbanism .C# combines string, percussion and wind instruments harmoniously.

INPUT C# comes to life by the user through two input points (one provides for the rhythm and the other the tune; sounds from both adding to form the melody) 1. The wheel: On rotating the wheel, the string, wind and percussion instruments are individually activated through simple systems. These systems could be initially setup according to the desired rhythm of the song. These systems would be in sync with each other and would depend on the rotation of the primary wheel.

2. Individual keys: Individual keys have been designed to give the user the power to create a melody.Pressing a key, results in creating sound from the pipes at the top.

Each new situation requires a new architecture and C # is an honest creation in this case to enhance the life of the slum dwellers.

Post graduation projects (2017-2019) Katha Kala | Kirigami | Morphoskin | Dust attracting copper

कथा कला Katha Kala Bapugaon, Maharashtra Engage. Teach. Involve. Intrigue Physical experiences tend to leave a mark in children. We attempt to create an element which leaves an impression in a child’s mind with its interactiveness . Inspired from the mechanism of a Kathputli being controlled from the top, a thought of having an element suspended from the ceiling came into picture.

Bapugaon is a village in the Palghar district of Maharashtra, India. A small village of about 270 households has the literacy rate of about 60%.

There’s a single school giving primary and secondary education to the children of Bapugaon and nearby villages. Anganwadi centres have been converted into schools for teaching the toddlers of the villages.

Given this context, the element can be a good fit to these centres to boost the basic montessori type learning to the toddlers of the village, hence equipping them with better skillset for the futurein the age where their grasping power is at the peak

Kirigami inspired geometry

Designing a roofing system for a railway station The key principle of Kirigami is using a single sheet of paper that can then been cut. This technique transforms a simple plane into a 3-dimentional surface, altering the structure and function of the base material. The simple act of cutting alters static behaviours of the materials into performant ones. On applying a sufficient amount of force, the material tends to have a resultant deformation on removal of the force (subjected to the inherent properties of the material being manipulated).

Stage 1 Understanding the underlying principles of the system and the inter-relationships between the system components

Stage 2 Explorations to derive forms and components using the understanding of the system from previous experiments

Stage 3 Application of the Kirigami system into various materials to fit into the narrative of a freestanding structural system

Stage 4 The angular cuts on the surface gave open ends on the pattern hence giving some interesting visual observations.

Stage 5 Running different analysis on the basis of the fitness criteria shortlisted

Possible material for the construction of the Kirigami inspired roofing system should be the one that can attain this shape in certain pressure, also a heavy base on the anchor points would help attain the desired shape. Hence, Bent Metal sheets with concrete base at the anchor points can be looked upon as one of the possible compositions of materials required for this type of construction.

Morpho-skin

Designing a kinetic pop up gallery for a sports brand When a fin moves tracks, the resultant arc varies in height and span depending on the possition of the ends on the tracks. With an intention to develop a structure that deforms on application of a mechanical force, an attempt was made to use this to develop a system that uses tracks to provide a defined motion.

Stage 4 To obtain a homogenous skin, a system was derived with separate structural and skin members.

Stage 5 Adding both the movements together gave us the needed kinetic movement.

Possible material for the construction of the MorphoSkin should be the one that can be light, transportable yet solid and sturdy, also a base floor with the movement mechanism needs to be there. Hence, Plywood with a wooden base can be looked upon as one of the possible compositions of materials required for this type of construction.

Dust attracting copper surfaces

Looking at copper as a material that can attract the dust from our polluted air This thesis will investigate the methods of geometrically manipulating surfaces in the proximity of the buildings, to attract the maximum dust particles from the air to form pure air bubbles with safer breathing environments
