BALANGAY DESIGN CONCEPT Many projects under the transportation sector of the Philippines is currently undergoing construction Some of these is the Metro Manila Subway, extension of existing train systems, and the New Manila Airport in Bulacan. In 50 years, the Philippines is expected to have better mass transportation systems due to these existing projects. Better transportation systems will not only improve community mobility and health, and road decongestiion will also benefit the economy as it improves fuel efficiency and accessibility which can open up tourism and trading in places that were once hard to reach. The Balangay is a boat used by native Filipinos for at least 2,000 years. Since the will showcase the transportation sector of the Philippines and its effect to the economy, the Balangay is used as the concept for this project. The shape of the pavilion is inspired from the sails of the Balangay which includes three sails of different sizes with triangular patterns while the colors of the sail, blue, red and yellow, are incorporated in the interiors of the pavilion.

TANGHALANG BULACAN DESIGN CONCEPT Buntal Hat
Ancient Greek Theaters and Film Reel
Manifesting culture in a building does not only create interesting forms but as well as incorporating a deeper meaning that connects your building to the people. The project is inspired in one of the culture and arts the Bulakenyos are proud of - buntal weaving. One of the famous forms of buntal weaving is the buntal hat which were mostly worn by farmers.
To give honor to the immense influence of the ancient greek theaters to the modern entertainment, and the amazing upgrades and breakthroughs of film reels in the film industry, the base form of this project as well as its motifs were inspired from their circular shapes
WHY BULACAN?
SITE ANALYSIS
Bulacan is rich in culture, arts and history. It is the home of various heroes of the Philippines and known for their amazing craftsmanship like the buntal hat. Bulacan is also one of the emerging cities in the Philippines. It is known to have progressive cities and is expected to continue to rise. PANUELO stage design
The project is inspired from the panuelo or scarf of the Baro’t Saya. In the Philippines, women who are beautiful and modest are called “Maria Clara”. Maria Calara is a fictional character from Jose Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo who wears the baro’t sya and she is depicted as someone who is beautiful and modest. Since the stage is to be used as a stage for beautiful, intelligent and modest women from all over the world, the panuelo was used. architectural design 8 | page 13

BUNTAL BOOTH cinema theatre box office
The Buntal Booth is inspired from the Buntal Hat which is also the inspiration of my cinema-theatre complex. The Buntal Hat is made of fibers extracted from Buri Palm leaves and the mesh wires were used to imitate these buntal hat weaving originated in Bulacan which is the location of my site. The color scheme and other materials used in my complex and sinagtala marquee were also used for visual coherence. The Free standing box office can accomofate 4 ticket sellers and 3 automated ticket machines. architectural design 8 | page 14
To my fellow aspiring architects, I wish that more of us will be able to apply the culture of the Philippines in our architectural designs, showcasing the Filipino identity to the world. I also hope that these projects will be able to inspire you to not lose light and go through this journey. There will be times that this path might seem to be the wrong one but always remember, as I may quote, “if you weren’t capable, the opportunity would have never come your way. You belong.” Goodluck, future architects!

NOTE
Creativity was also essential in translating my intentions to architectural solutions in these projects. With the learnings and experience from Ar. Flancia, I was able to successfully design a Philippine pavilion and cinema-theatre complex that puts a heavy design consideration with regards to culture. I wish that this creativity is something that I can bring along with me and share to others as I go with my future projects.
ARCHITECT'S
These projects highlighted how culture is incorporated in architecture. It shows how the built-environment can sustain and promote the culture of a place and its people. It is of great importance that we apply it to our designs because it does not only connect the people to our buildings but it also gives them a sense of identity, While going through the projects’ conceptual development, I have also realized how culture can shape the form of our buildings. There are a lot of inspirations that can be used not only for aesthetics but also for a deeper symbolism that relates our building to a place.
