For our capstone project we’re focused on documenting the development planning drawings for the “Francesco’s Mixed-Use” urban project by DAAS Architecture and turning them into a complete set of construction documents. Along the way, we’ll be adding elements such as a 3D model, renderings, detail sets, material planning for both the interior and exterior, and much more.
The modeling and construction plans, and details will be done using Revit and we plan on using Lumion for detailed renderings. We plan to explore drawings that we haven’t yet been able to in previous semesters, to name a few, 昀氀oor 昀椀nish plans, slab plans, much more in depth stair plans, window installation plans, and many more. Additionally, we plan to use the mindful materials website for 昀椀nding materials that meet our sustainability goals. This project is particularly exciting for us because it’s not just about the technical work, it’s a chance to explore creative solutions to late stage design problems and learn new skills from a challenging design.

One signi昀椀cant emerging construction typology is mixed-use commercial development. My 3rd semester project is to design a mixed-use commercial development on Bowness 46th Street in Calgary that is classi昀椀ed as MU-2, with FAR -4.5 and height restrictions up to 22 m. My property was a corner plot, which has a total area of 1782 m2 and a total biddable 昀氀oor area of 8000 m2. The parcel is in a busy street that had undergone an area development plan proposed by the city of Calgary. My proposal includes a 2-story commercial complex with ground-昀氀oor units designated for commercial purposes and the top 昀氀oor designed for o昀케ce uses.
The project’s total area is approximately 2100 m2. The design rational for my project was based on the redevelopment plan proposed by the city, where the focus was given to promoting a sense of community and creating spaces for gathering and social interaction. Keeping this in mind, my design was involved around the concept of having good gathering spaces and interaction areas that can help boost footfall into the commercial units and also provide an interactive space for the tenants using the o昀케ce space above. At the moment, the project is in the schematic design stage, where I tried di昀昀erent approaches or layouts to implement my design with the concept.

One signi昀椀cant emerging construction typology is the mixed-use residential building. My project for the second semester is to design a mixed-use residential structure on Kensington 19th street in Calgary that is classi昀椀ed as CN-1.
The property has a 563.659sqm total size with far – 1 and a height restriction of 10m from grade. The residential and commercial markets in Calgary are 昀氀ourishing, which makes a mixed-use building design along 19th street Kensington, which is closer to SAIT and other educational institutes, and downtown calgary, a viable option. This neighborhood could draw students looking to rent studio apartments as well a working-class residents and has a high likelihood of producing successful commercial establishments.
