The Philippine education system has long grappled with the challenge of ensuring that teachers possess the necessary expertise to effectively educate their students This issue was once again brought to light during the consultative meeting on teacher specialization for Key Stage 2 conducted by the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM 2) on September 26, 2024 The event,
held at the Philippine Normal University, gathered educators, school administrators and government officials to discuss a pressing concern: should subject specialization be mandated for teachers at the elementary level?
The Mismatch in Teacher Training and Assignment
A striking revelation emerged from the consultation 62% of
high school teachers are teaching subjects they did not major in during college This alarming statistic underscores a systemic issue in teacher deployment, one that has direct implications for student learning outcomes A 2016 World Bank report further compounds the problem revealing the low content knowledge of high school teachers, which directly impacts student performance If teachers
themselves struggle with the subjects they teach how can they be expected to nurture academic excellence among their students?
The Case for Teacher Specialization
Teacher specialization offers a logical solution By focusing on a specific subject area, teachers can develop a deeper mastery of content, allowing for more
effective lesson delivery and student engagement Many educators support this shift, emphasizing that specialization enables them to dedicate more time to refining their instructional methods rather than scrambling to grasp multiple subjects As one teacher put it, “Kapag mas maalam si teacher, mas nakukuha

Buwan ng Wika 2024: “Filipino: Wikang Mapagpalaya”

by Lorenzo Miguel Canieda
Buwan ng Wika was commemorated with the theme Filipino: Wikang Mapagpalaya, on September 6, 2024 at the Aquinas School Auditorium This theme serves as a reminder to all Filipinos about the power of the Filipino language in helping us to achieve true freedom and equality
During this celebration various activities were conducted in schools and communities, such as discussions, poetry writing contests, and art programs featuring the stories of heroes and leaders who use language as an instrument of change The exercises highlighted the contributions of the language in the struggle for freedom, from the
time of the revolutionaries to the present
One of the highlights of the celebration was hearing from students themselves about the significance of the Filipino language in their lives Jumong Salome, a Grade 12 student, shared his thoughts on the theme “Para sa akin, ang wikang Filipino ay hindi lang paraan ng pakikipag-usap, kundi isang daan para ipahayag ang ating saloobin at ipaglaban ang ating mga karapatan ( For me, the Filipino language is not just a way to communicate but a path to expressing our thoughts and fighting for our rights ”) He further explained, “Mahalaga na gamitin natin ang sarili nating wika dahil

dito nagsisimula ang tunay na kalayaan ang kakayahang ipahayag ang ating sarili nang walang takot at may buong pagkakakilanlan ” (“It is important that we use our own language because true freedom begins here the ability to express ourselves without fear and with full identity ”)
Buwan ng Wika served as a key to rethink the value of our language in our daily lives and in social issues With the recognition of Filipino as a "liberating language," it is expected that more people will be active in promoting their rights and expressing their ideas

2024 Dubbed ‘One of The Worst Years for Children Caught in Conflict’

by John Michael Lagazon
Armed conflicts and wars are still very prevalent in the modern age Numerous armed conflicts are currently raging across the globe These violent struggles often involve complex social, political and economic factors and often result in devastation and suffering for everything and everyone caught in its crosshairs As the world watches ongoing conflicts unfold, there is a group of silent victims whose suffering goes unnoticed Wars spare no one men, women, even children
More and more children are estimated to be either living in conflict zones or forcibly displaced due to conflict and violence in their area Statistical findings by the United Nations concluded that over 473 million children more than one in six globally now live in areas affected by conflict
According to a review by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the impact of armed conflicts on children around the world reached devastating record
IMFforecasts moderateglobal growth

by Christan Hailo Andoy
The global economy is expected to grow at a slower pace in 2024 and 2025, according to a report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Experts predict that the global economy will expand by approximately 3 2% each year, which is slightly lower than previous forecasts This means that while the economy is still growing it is not accelerating as quickly as before
The good news is that inflation is expected to decline The IMF estimates that inflation will be around 5 8% in 2024 and will further decrease to 4 3% in 2025 This suggests that prices will not rise as rapidly, making goods and services more affordable over time According to the IMF’s chief economist, Mr Gourinchas, inflation is decreasing without significantly slowing down the overall economy
Even though global growth remains steady, different regions are experiencing varying economic conditions The United States is performing well with its economy expected to grow by 2 8% in 2024 However,

levels in 2024 This year alone has seen a disheartening escalation in the impact of armed conflict on children worldwide 1
Children, as young as a couple months old are continuously facing the adverse effects of war in different parts of the globe from the Americas to parts of Southeastern Asia The most wellknown ongoing armed conflicts are the Russia-Ukraine War Syrian Civil War Myanmar Civil War, and Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Earlier on June 24, Save the Children reported nearly 21,000 missing children in Gaza amidst the ongoing tension between it and neighboring country, Israel Children aren’t only being captured but also hurt and straight up killed Several human rights violations against children have been achieved by those who fuel these wars Israel has killed more than 14,000 children in Gaza since October 7, UNICEF reported earlier this year
The horrors of war are most

brutally felt by children In Syria, a conflict that has raged for over a decade, children have been heavily affected According to UNICEF, more than 12,000 children have lost their lives since the beginning of the Syrian Civil War and the number seems to be growing higher and higher with each passing day Thousands more were severely hurt by bombs, missiles and gunfire Hospitals and schools which should be safe areas, have been targeted and turned into areas that reek of death and destruction
Armed conflicts leave lasting scars on the children who had become inadvertent victims Children have been the most affected by wars even though they are not the ones who are behind it These atrocities should raise concern and promote action in regards to lessening the effects of wars on people, especially children

The Department of Education (DepEd) requested a budget of at least P793 18 billion for the year 2025 during a conference held in December 2024 This budget was intended to fund a computerization program for schools across the Philippines However, select lawmakers from the bicameral conference committee began deliberating on the proposed budget The final bicam report reduced the budget by exactly P11 57 billion leading to what has been referred to as a P12 billion "budget cut " As a result, the majority of the education community now faces challenges that could have been addressed by the computerization program
Teachers without laptops, students with aging technology and lack of classrooms are only some of the challenges faced The DepEd s program of computerization is a viable solution to all these challenges he budget cut has postponed this program and many students and teachers still face these challenges Sen Sonny Angara, a former senator and former chair of the finance committee, said the

budget cut would bar many teachers and learners from access to online learning and new education technology
Several schools around the Philippines lack the technology to properly teach students while students are also trying to catch up to the digital age “Matagal nang pangarap ito ng mga eskwelahan na maging computerize at digitize na sana pero sa ngayon medyo nahihirapan pa tayo Ang mga teacher wala pang sariling laptop” said by Benjo Basas, chairperson of the Teachers Dignity Coalition This statement proves that the lack of proper technology is a major hindrance for learning
The budget cut has sparked concerns among educators and lawmakers, emphasizing the need for sustained investment in the country’s education system Without adequate funding, the digital divide in schools will continue to widen, leaving both teachers and students at a disadvantage in an increasingly technology-driven world
An urgent announcement has been publicly issued by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to call awareness to the alarming state of the 60 million or women and girls who are stateless or forcibly migrated These individuals are more prone to experience genderbased violence (GBV) The amount of money available for necessary support services is still deeply insufficient despite the dire need This makes those who are already in terrible situations who are fleeing persecution and conflict even more likely to get harmed
The number of recorded cases of sexual violence associated to conflicts has severely increased by 50% in the last year, compared to 2022, according to current UN data Surprisingly, women and girls make up 95% of these documented cases The UNHCR cautions that many cases may go unreported, meaning the true extent of violence is probably bigger than the statistics indicate The underreporting is frequently linked to societal disappointment, fear of revenge, and difficulties seeking legal help
This dilemma is best shown by the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where, especially in displacement camps, the bodies of women and girls have turned into a "battleground" due to persistent violence and instability This year, the number of GBV reports has significantly increased, with rape being the most common violation There are reports of similar massacres in other crisis areas Women in Chad who are escaping the conflict in Sudan have told of being raped on their frantic escapes There is a mental health crisis in Afghanistan as a result of the increasing restrictions placed on women and girls, high rates of domestic abuse, and a failing economy UNHCR partners report that more people are seeking mental health assista-
nce Displacement isn't the only hazard The horrors of sexual assault, exploitation, enslavement, and human trafficking still haunt women haunt women refugees and migrants traveling to the Mediterranean According to humanitarian agencies, a startling 90% of these women are raped Even individuals who are able to go to nearby countries frequently find themselves in vulnerable circumstances, with access to limited services and increased GBV hazards
The UNHCR highlights the high risk of intimate partner violence for forcibly displaced women and girls, with estimates suggesting a 20% higher risk compared to non-displaced women and girls Furthermore, intersecting forms of discrimination, based on disability, poverty, or diverse sexual orientations and gender identities, compound these risks
The UNHCR highlights that early and effective GBV prevention and response measures are life-saving and life-changing for displaced women and girls 10 However funding for these critical services falls drastically short of the immense need For example, six major regional refugee response plans, which cover refugees from the DRC Afghanistan, Sudan, Ukraine, South Sudan, and Syria, have received only 28% of the $236 million required for GBV programming this year
As more days of activism against Gender-Based Violence approaches, the UNHCR is raising awareness Without a significant increase in funding, millions of displaced women and girls will be denied access to vital services and help they need in the coming years, leaving them vulnerable to further violence and suffering Communities must act now to address this silent crisis and protect the most vulnerable

Allies to Adversaries

by Paul Benedict Mari Callorina
Vice President Sara Duterte, known for her fiery rhetoric and bold statements, has once again ignited political tensions in the Philippines. This time, her comments have gone beyond the realm of political posturing, drawing serious attention and concern from the highest levels of government. In a shocking turn, Duterte reportedly made inflammatory threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., including a claim of plotting his assassination. Such declarations, laced with accusations and insinuations, have not only strained the already fragile relationship between the Marcos and Duterte camps but have also raised alarms about national security.
This is not the first instance of Duterte's provocative remarks. Earlier, she claimed to have dreamt of decapitating Marcos and even threatened to exhume the remains of his father, Ferdinand Marcos Sr., from the Heroes Cemetery and discard them into the West Philippine Sea if political attacks against her persisted. These threats, while seemingly outrageous, underscore the deep animosity between two of the most powerful political dynasties in the country.
The alliance between Marcos and Duterte was once celebrated as a unifying force during the 2022 elections. Their "Uniteam" campaign slogan symbolized a rare political synergy between the North's Marcos dynasty and the South's Duterte stronghold. This partnership delivered a landslide victory, securing the presidency for Marcos and the vice presidency for Duterte. However, their unity proved to be short-lived. Diverging policy stances— particularly on relations with China and the United States—exposed cracks in their partnership. While the Duterte administration leaned toward pro-China policies, the Marcos government has shifted to strengthen defense ties with the United States and take a firmer stance on China's territorial claims in the South China Sea.
The political rift widened as Duterte began openly criticizing Marcos, calling him “incompetent” and accusing him of being a “liar.” She lambasted his unfulfilled campaign promise to lower rice prices to 20 pesos per kilo, a pledge that resonated strongly with voters but has yet to materialize due to economic challenges, including soaring fertilizer costs and global supply chain disruptions.
Sara Duterte’s rise to power mirrors her father Rodrigo Duterte’s brash, populist approach. As mayor of Davao City, she cultivated a reputation for strong-willed leadership, earning widespread support among ordinary Filipinos. However, her confrontational style has often clashed with traditional political norms. Earlier this year, tensions escalated after Duterte resigned as Secretary of Education, citing a “toxic” relationship with the Marcos administration. Her resignation coincided with congressional investigations into her office’s budget, including allegations of misusing confidential funds. Duterte’s combative behavior during these inquiries, coupled with accusations against the Marcos family for historical political atrocities, has further eroded the alliance.
For Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the fallout with Sara Duterte is just one of many challenges his administration faces. His presidency has been marked by calls to address the controversial drug war killings under Rodrigo Duterte, an ongoing investigation by the International Criminal Court, and economic pressures exacerbated by global conflicts.
While Marcos has sought to distinguish his leadership with a focus on international diplomacy and economic recovery, his inability to fulfill key campaign promises, like reducing rice prices, has drawn criticism from political opponents, including Sara Duterte herself.
The intensifying feud between the Marcos and Duterte camps comes at a

Co-educational institution over single-sex education: perspective of an all boysschoolstudent

by Janzen Jacinto
“Intelligence plus characterthat is the goal of true education”, Martin Luther King Jr told the world Emphasizing on character , it relies mostly on qualities using education to develop the youth with regards to positive, useful, and necessary qualities a pupil must obtain
considerable that to be in a one sex based system of education will enhance ideas to be more mutualized Considering that there is a mutual understanding” between both genders Open-mindedness assists a person, most especially a student to learn more
Realizing that if a student like me is not welcomed to new and innovative systems of education, how will my capabilities be realized
What makes me a single-sex education institution, students prefer a co-educational manner? I discovered I learned and most importantly making new friends assisted me with a better perspective towards my own social skills
Firstly discovering how other students who specifically are of the opposite gender contributed to how I am to adapt and behave in a formal education setting
When it comes to working towards group based projects, I discovered new perspectives

The intensifying feud between the Marcos and Duterte camps comes at a critical juncture as the Philippines prepares for midterm elections in 2025. These elections will not only determine the balance of power in Congress but also serve as a referendum on the Marcos administration’s performance.
Political analysts warn that the escalating rivalry between these two political dynasties could destabilize governance and erode public trust in democratic institutions. The stakes are high, with the outcome of this power struggle likely to shape the future trajectory of Philippine politics.
When asked whether reconciliation with President Marcos was possible, Duterte dismissed the idea, stating, “We have already reached the point of no return.”
Yet, as the adage goes, in politics, there are no permanent enemies or allies—only permanent interests. Whether this political saga ends in further division or an eventual reconciliation remains to be seen.
The Marcos-Duterte fallout is emblematic of the volatile nature of Philippine politics, where alliances can shift as quickly as they are formed. With the midterm elections on the horizon and national security concerns mounting, the country finds itself at a crossroads. How this rift is managed— or exploited—will test the resilience of the nation’s democratic institutions and its leaders' commitment to governance over personal vendettas.
Standing my ground as a male student of a single-sex education for 11 years, in addition being implemented upon a system that enacted a co-education institution for only a total 3 months opened my mind personally that a single-sex education Isn’t necessary in this society and can be frowned upon
Learning the majority of my life in an “all boys school”, I realized that it is essential to learn collaborate and understand what it is to work with different students that will develop into colleagues towards a student’s future Referring back to the quote of Martin Luther, not only intelligence but also character lays Its context on exposure of a gender to another most especially in an educational manner Because It promotes the better “social skills” a student must be equipped with Mathematics, Science, and English will not be enough to teach a boy how to collaborate with the opposite gender or a girl working with a boy A student that develops the necessary social skills in a gender based context can have a higher chance of proper flexibility toward communicating with anyone For example, during my academic years, many of the grade school students tend to “fear” girls their age If a system in which it allows an environment for a one-gender basis either “masculine” or feminine values are seen, how will students be welcomed toward inclusivity?
An exclusive all boys or girls school” does not welcome open mindedness Coeducational institutions highlight education for all knowing either you are a male, female or a part of the LGBTQIA+ it welcomes “more” rather than “less” It is
My female classmates surprised me well in regards to how they create a Canva presentation, how they would write, or even the way of delivering a report
Those factors in general introduced and carried out a “I did not know that could happen” idea more frequently
Secondly learning well for me how do I compete academically
Adapting to new classmates created the tendency of a new learning environment for me
Because It welcomed new students that had different levels of academic performance One of which is a female classmate friend of mine who labeled me and her as “hakot ng recitation” Alongside with the new learning environment it created a competition for me personally that helped me improve my grades
Thirdly and most essential, social skills will be developed Even with as short as 3 months I consider that time length in collaboratively learning with an open environment with mre different perspectives will aid my college years My point is that a complex, inclusive, and flexible social skills that developed rooting in an educational system that enacts co-education institutions develops the character with intelligence of Martin Luteher’s quote
I’ve talked about my perspective It’s fairly observed that most single-sex institutions of education are mostly common in catholic schools I encourage that the catholic faith in education should not lie borders for a single and limited space of learning
For the better of many educational systems and for the goodness of the students my almost 11 years as a student under an all boys school made me realize that exclusivity is not as satisfactory as inclusivity
Substantive democracy extends far beyond simply knowing the candidates and choosing leaders It requires a transformation of power dynamics an effort to address the structural inequalities that leave many people powerless over basic yet critical aspects of life like fair wages, access to affordable essentials, and the ability to live and work with dignity
What is democracy? Is it something tangible, something we can hold or consume? Why is it so essential to save? Like food, democracy is a fundamental need a mechanism that binds us together as a society This connection sustains us by ensuring our safety, amplifying our voices and addressing our shared concerns At its core, democracy is the sociopolitical expression of our shared humanity, prioritizing the collective good above all However, today, democracy faces unprecedented threats Disinformation, propelled by digital platforms, is severing the connections between individuals, communities, and the environment at an alarming scale and speed The internet which revolutionized how we live, learn, work, and engage, has become a doubleedged sword Originally
envisioned as a space for empowerment and unity echoed in the mission statements of tech giants like Google, which aims to "organize the world’s information," and Facebook, which strives to "bring the world closer together" these platforms have devolved into tools of division and chaos Fueled by profit and power, these digital spaces have become battlegrounds where lies spread faster than truth Disin= formation doesn’t just fracture relationship it fragment societies The fallout is evident: rising mental health crises escalating hate crimes, and worsening climate catastrophes A web of deceit now undermines democracy threatening the freedoms and rights hard-won over generations

Duterte’s legacy of violence and extrajudicial killings

Duterte's war on drugs led to the deaths of over 30,000 people Many of them were poor and defenceless Their families are still looking for justice, but nothing has been done Duterte gave the police too much power, and they used it to kill people without a proper trial This is against the law
Some people says’ Duterte was just trying to stop drugs but his way was wrong Drugs are still a problem, and his violence only hurt innocent people He made things worse by scaring people
Leaders should follow

In the Philippines, the consequences are stark As former Congressman Kit Belmonte highlighted at the recent Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) conference in Iloilo, disinformation has played a
the law If Duterte isn't punished, it shows that powerful people can do anything they want This is bad for our country Putting Duterte in jail will show that everyone is equal under the law It will also give justice to the families of those who died
We need justice Duterte hurt many people and he should pay for it This will help the Philippines move forward and show the world that we value human rights and the rule of law
For the Philippines to truly move forward accountability must become a cornerstone of its governance Without it, the cycle of abuse and corruption will continue eroding trust in public institutions and deepening the divide between the people and their leaders Duterte’s prosecution would be a defining moment in the country’s history, a chance to break free from the shadows of impunity and build a future rooted in justice, equality, and respect for human rights
pivotal role in enabling state violence the suppression of dissent, and the erosion of democratic institutions From the extrajudicial killings of small-time drug pushers to the unwarranted imprisonment of Senator Leila de Lima, the shutdown of media giant ABS-CBN and the ascent of authoritarian leadership, the reach of disinformation has proven both pervasive and destructive The CALD conference, which brought together political leaders journalist, educators, and artists, sought to forge a coalition to combat this menace In her keynote address, Senator Risa Hontiveros emphasized that the fight against disinformation must go hand-in-hand with the broader goal of making democracy tangible in people’s everyday lives not just in political discourse but in economic opportunities cultural practices, and grassroots initiatives Democracy must resonate beyond election day; it must manifest in the day-to-day realities of citizens, particularly those who are often ignored or marginali-

The influential role of mother tongue education to young Filipinos

by Lorenzo Miguel Canieda
The Philippines a country known for its rich diversity, has long dealt with the issue of language education While Filipino and English have been selected as official languages, the importance of mother tongue education cannot be overstated By embracing the use of mother tongue in the classroom, the Philippines can provide numerous opportunities for students

As I have observed, the significant advantages of mother tongue-based education is the ability to enhance logical development When students especially the younger generations, are taught in their native language, they are able to grasp concepts more easily and deeply This strong foundation in their mother tongue can then be used as a
zed Disinformation thrives in environments where inequality persists In countries like the Philippines, where poverty, hunger and insecurity are deeply entrenched, digital manipulation takes root easily Social media becomes both an escape and a weapon a source of entertainment and a vehicle for fantastical lies spun by political operators To reclaim democracy, we must ensure that it is not merely a system of governance but a lived experience It must empower citizens to shape decisions that affect their lives and futures This means addressing the disconnection that allows disinformation to flourish both online and in the real world The task is urgent: democracy is indispensable in confronting the existential crises of our time, from poverty and inequality to pandemics and climate change
Democracy will not save itself It must be lived daily through active resistance to disinformation and a relentless commitment to justice equity and truth Only by making democracy real by transforming it from a lofty ideal into a tangible force for good can we hope to protect it for generations to come
bridge to learn other languages, such as English and Filipino Moreover mother tongue education took care of a sense of cultural identity and pride By valuing and promoting local languages, we can preserve our cultural heritage and strengthen our sense of nationalism
In addition to knowledge and cultural benefits, mother tongue education can also help young students' academic performance Studies have shown that students who are taught in their mother tongue tend to have higher levels of literacy and numerals This is because they are able to analyze, understand, and apply the concepts being taught more in the subject Furthermore, mother tongue education can increase students' enthusiasm and motivation in learning When we students are taught in a language we understand, it is more likely we are interested and enthusiastic about the studies
In summary I firmly believe that mother tongue in Philippine education is essential for the holistic approach for my fellow students By embracing the rich diversity of our languages and cultures, we can create a more inclusive and suitable education system

The fragile strength of athletes

by Tristan Roma
Injuries can vary from mild to severe Athletes are ones who most likely get injuries during their training and games As an athlete myself I have suffered multiple injuries both during training and in games These injuries have benched me, benched in a way where I couldn't play or attend training Even though those injuries were minor injuries I wasn't able to contribute to the team while I was recovering
Some athletes suffer major injuries like ACL tears A teacher in Aquinas School suffered this

said ACL tear and wasn't able to play for months He had to be hospitalized and had to go through a long recovery period and even after, he wasn’t able to play at his best because of the drawbacks gained from the injury Another example is a friend of mine, a former Dominican College volleyball varsity member She suffered the same ACL tear and had to go through months of recovery and rehabilitation And now after their recovery and rehabilitation, they cannot play at their best because of the lasting impact of the injury There are many other athletes who suffer these types of injuries and are never the same after their recovery and rehabilitation However, there are athletes that, even after being severely injured are able to play at their best or even better These athletes take their rehabilitation seriously and eventually become better than they were before the injury
Some injuries make you while others break you, but it is never good to hope to gain one to gamble An injury, no matter how severe can change your future I am part of the Aquinas School volleyball varsity team B, and when I was first starting out, I wasn t really that good It got worse when I

From Classwork to Commerce: Should Students Run Businesses on Campus?

by John Michael Lagazon
In today’s ever-evolving world, entrepreneurship is becoming an increasingly likely career option The rise of start-ups e-commerce, and self-made millionaires have made the idea of running a business more appealing With this in mind, it raises an important question: Should students be allowed to run businesses inside school premises?
As an Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM) student, the question above is very much relevant for me In fact, ever since I was young, I have always been keen on starting my own business The thought of it just felt right to me That desire eventually became a
got my first injury Although it was a minor injury, I was never the same, because that injury would be a reoccurring injury Every time I got injured the severity would get worse and worse
An athlete can go through these injuries and recover easily However, that is only physically There is also mental damage that an injury can do like making the athlete think that they will never be able to play again It is a mental toll that athletes must face and overcome If they don’t overcome this they may spiral into depression I almost fell into that spiral due to my recurring injuries, but my peers were able to pull me out Other athletes who don’t have the peers I have may suffer from depression now because of their injuries

Future of travel unchanged: new transportation system launched

by Raine Luis Cruz
As of late New Clark City (NCC) announced a statement about the implementation of a new and improved version of buses in the Philippines: driverless or automated buses
has also planned routes in specific areas via the utilization of electric vehicles BCDA Vice President Randy Viacrusis suggested that they want to make NCC a hub focusing on sustainability and innovation
“While it promotes efficiency for transport operations it also helps the sustainability ng ating New Clark City Promote po aming vision as the smart and innovative city, a unique feature and one of the kind dito sa ating country,” Viacrusis noted
Later in life all athletes will have a name for themselves, this is what the public would call them or know them by An athlete who’s suffered an injury and never got back could have the public knowing them as having their career ended due to an injury This usually leads to mocking, and adds to their previous depression leading to self-doubt At the start of their career an athlete can come up as strong or resilient, but in the end can be a wimp because they weren’t able to recover from an injury
Homework is Doing More Bad Than Good

Should homework really be necessary when it comes to overall learning, especially since the concept itself already proves it to be a mundane and hectic process?
Homework is not only tedious, it also happens to be detrimental to both the physical and mental health of students, mainly targeting those in the high school department as they are needed to be more “responsible”, supposedly befitting their age
Many of these students have to put up with school every single day, with impractical or useless homework imparted to them for seemingly no reason at all
On top of that, experts say that the duration of homework is unusually long A minimum of two (2) hours or more is needed to complete a single activity, only adding up every time a new lesson is introduced
The same logic applies to lower grade levels, like those in the first grade where it s been found that the average maximum of ten (10) minutes to finish their work Exceeding that threshold forces them to spend more time and energy for the same amount of work
Some studies show that a plethora of students, mainly early elementary schoolers, receive twice the amount of recommended homework than
they can currently handle, which shows just how incredibly merciless modernized education is Those extra assignments contribute to increased family stress, particularly when they see that their child has grades drastically going under
Some schools have thus far implemented no-homework policies to accommodate struggling students, with the increase of school hours in return
Even though it is considered “important’ for educational standards, we have to consider that homework just increases the already heavy burden of some who struggle academically We should influence the educational system as a whole and ease the burdens of students, whether they be toddlers or adolescents It does not change the stand that we must have for their overall health

At present, this proposed mass scale project is a part of an undergoing demonstration program conducted by the Japanese company Zenmo, in collaboration with MC Metro Transportation Inc
The driverless bus aims to connect the various sports facilities within NCC and is right now known to be payless or free of charge It supports mostly athletes and employees within the area s vicinity, but anyone, both foreigners and locals, can visit the city anytime to have first-hand experience in riding these modernized buses The schedule of which these buses will be put into normal usage will soon be announced
The Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) mentioned that in addition to the driverless buses, Zenmov
Officials make passengers feel assured even though the concept of a driverless bus sparks nervousness and uneasiness in them, as they are used to riding public transportation that an actual person operates To ensure overall passenger safety, a safety officer or standby driver is situated in the bus during multi-trial testing The standby driver will manually comandeer the bus with the use of a video game controller if a problem comes up
“The vehicle has several sensors several cameras Those sensors are used to detect if there will be objects kung meron man Nakaprograma na ang mga distances, locations where to stop for the loading and unloading,” Viacrusis added
The Business Development Specialist of Zenmov, Yukai Fuchi speaks briefly of using Japanese technology with a highly intelligent mobility system The bus even slows its pace whenever near pedestrian lanes and also features a ramp for those on wheelchairs
Letter to the Editor
To the dedicated staff of The Bellows Publication,
There’s something remarkable about the way you operate With only a handful of staffers you manage to cover stories, capture moments, and keep the school informed, all while juggling your own responsibilities as students It s not just about publishing news or posting updates it’s about the effort, the late nights, the last-minute edits, and the constant push to make sure everything is done right
I’ve seen how despite the limitations you still manage to produce quality work You don t just report events; you give them life Whether it’s through well-written articles, carefully edited videos, or striking pubmats you make sure every story is told with meaning Even when the deadlines pile up or the workload feels overwhelming, you push through, not for recognition, but because you believe in what you do
That kind of dedication isn’t common It deserves to be acknowledged and appreciated So thank you for everything the hard work, the patience, the passion It doesn t go unnoticed With appreciation and respect

School administrators echoed this sentiment, noting that specialized teachers exhibit greater confidence in their teaching, reducing the need for constant intervention from school heads Moreover teacher specialization could alleviate the burden of excessive lesson preparation, giving educators more time to focus on honing their craft
Generalist Teachers and Career Flexibility
However, the call for specialization is not without its critics Some argue that the current generalist approach, particularly at the elementary level, allows for greater flexibility in teacher assignments and career mobility Many teachers enter the profession with a broadbased education, trained to handle multiple subjects
Forcing premature specialization might limit career opportunities and
create unnecessary barriers for new educators still discovering their strengths
Assistant Schools Division Superintendent Marc Voltaire Padilla of Quezon City warns against making pre-service specialization mandatory suggesting instead that teachers be allowed to explore different subjects before specializing He proposes linking specialization to career progression, encouraging teachers to pursue deeper expertise as they advance in their careers rather than imposing rigid constraints from the outset
Furthermore, mandating specialization too early could exacerbate existing shortages in certain subject areas If strict specialization were enforced, schools in underserved areas might struggle to fill teaching positions, leading to even greater disparities in education quality across regions
Striking a Balance
Given the strong arguments on both sides the best approach may be a balanced one Instead
Discipline vs. Comfort

by Janzen Jacinto
On April 27th 2024, the PAGASA Station in NAIA recorded Metro Manila’s highest temperature at 38 8 °C with a heat index of 48 °C, Metro Manila’s highest at the time of writing and higher numbers might be recorded before the dry season ends The effects of El Niño and the scorching summer heat are truly a force to be reckoned with and the Department of Health warns the public about its health risks and measures that must be undertaken in order to mitigate them One of these measures encourages the wearing of loose or thin clothing in order to aid the body in expelling heat through
increased airflow on the skin which promotes sweat evaporation However, the uniform policy of the school encourages students to wear daily uniform on most days and PE usually only once per week
In the absence of a suspension order from the local government unit, the students are at risk of exposure to the hot weather as they go to school and back home as well as spending time outside classrooms during break periods This is further exacerbated by the frequent wearing of double layered clothing due to the school’s uniform policy Discomfort may be caused by sweat buildup,
of immediately overhauling the system, the Department of Education (DepEd) could implement a phased transition, allowing teachers to develop subject expertise over time rather than enforcing early specialization This could be achieved through: (1) Enhanced In-Service Training (INSET) –Providing continuous professional development programs tailored to specific subjects, ensuring that teachers gradually develop specialization as they gain experience (2) Flexible Specialization Pathways –Allowing teachers to enter the profession as generalists but offering incentives for those who choose to specialize later in their careers (3) Strengthened Pre-Service Training – While early specialization remains a contentious issue, teacher education institutions should enhance content mastery in critical subjects like Math, Science, and English without entirely eliminating generalist training (4) Mentorship and Learning Action Cells (LAC) –Encouraging peer learning and subject-specific mentorship to help teachers refine their
which also traps more heat on the body’s surface
Studies from the Stanford School of Sustainability have shown that higher temperatures can be detrimental to the student’s test taking ability as well as their long term learning The research emphasizes the improvement of learning environments for students especially those living in hot climates Besides a decline in school performance, excessive heat also poses a greater threat to children as they are more vulnerable to contracting heat related illnesses than adults, further highlighting the need for policies that foster more conducive and comfortable spaces for studying
An amendment to the school’s uniform policy during the sum-
factor in why I chose this academic strand
Going back to the question raised, I strongly believe that having the opportunity to run a business on school grounds could be an enriching experience for students This can provide them with realworld exposure to entrepreneurship and business operations Students should not be held back by academic institutions from participating in businessrelated activities
Some simple business ideas perfect for students are selling crafts such as crocheted items, keychains, pins, and accessories They can also branch into non-tangible forms of business such as helping fellow students with their homework and tutoring sessions
expertise in a structured yet flexible manner
Teacher specialization should not be an imposed mandate but rather an opportunity for educators to grow professionally By providing the right support systems and career incentives, the Philippines can move toward a more effective and responsive education system one that prioritizes both teacher development and student success
This approach ensures that educators are given the freedom to explore their strengths before committing to a particular field, reducing burnout and improving job satisfaction It also addresses the current inefficiencies in teacher deployment by gradually aligning subject assignments with teacher expertise A well-planned transition to specialization, supported by policies that empower rather than restrict teachers, will pave the way for a stronger and more resilient education system
mer months would help the students tolerate the heat better while still imprinting values of neatness and discipline The students should be allowed to wear PE uniform any day during the summer months without consequences because this attire dissipates heat better as it is designed with physical activity in mind The material of the shirts should also be changed from cotton to sportswear fabric such as those found on the school’s football and volleyball varsity uniforms This material is thinner and more breathable which allows better airflow and heat loss on the skin
The reality is, the Philippines is a tropical country with a hot and
Allowing students to run businesses inside school premises can undoubtedly provide significant educational benefits It’s a unique opportunity for students to engage in real-world scenarios that can boost their financial literacy With proper guidance and precautions, students like myself can greatly benefit from this experience
One of the key reasons I chose this academic strand is because it aligns with my passion for entrepreneurship and business management I have always been interested in understanding how businesses operate and how innovative ideas can be transformed into profitable ventures This strand offers the perfect balance between theoretical knowledge and practical application, allowing me to develop the skills necessary to succeed in the business world By engaging in activities like running a business on school grounds, I can apply what I learn in class to real-life situations, further solidifying my decision to pursue this path
humid climate and it is no question that anyone, regardless of age, can feel the burden of its effects, especially children who are most at risk That is why the way we are allowed to dress at school should reflect the climate we live in with comfort and decency taken into account Going to school doesn’t have to feel more uncomfortable than it should be and rules designed with student well-being in mind build a more productive learning environme- nt Let us all strive together to help everyone beat the heat

Love her or loathe her, it’s impossible to deny Taylor Swift’s impact. With over a decade in the spotlight, her star power has grown to astronomical proportions, and her latest release proves her reign is far from over. Swift’s new album, The Tortured Poets Department, smashed records with over 300 million streams in its first 12 hours, making it one of the most talked-about releases of the year. To top it off, she surprised fans two hours later with The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology, a deluxe version featuring 15 additional songs. In total, Swift released 31 new tracks, leaving fans exhilarated and critics buzzing.
But is it worth the hype?
As a lifelong Swiftie, my answer is an emphatic yes. From its haunting lyrics to its genre-blending melodies, The Tortured Poets Department feels like Swift’s most raw and intricate work yet. It’s not without flaws, but it’s a masterclass in storytelling and emotion—a musical journey that is as unpredictable as it is unforgettable.
The album feels like the lovechild of reputation, folklore, and evermore. Tracks like “Guilty as Sin” channel the brooding energy of reputation, while songs like “How Did It End?” offer gut-wrenching lyricism reminiscent of her folklore era. Swift dives deep into manic highs and lows, weaving heartbreak and resilience into tracks like “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart.”
The album also seems to serve as a reflection on her life post-breakup with British actor Joe Alwyn, with whom she shared a six-year relationship. Nowhere is this more apparent than in “Florida!!!,” a collaboration with Florence + The Machine. The song metaphorically captures the fallout of a failed romance and an underwhelming rebound: “Little did you know your home’s really only / A town you’re just a guest in / So you work your life away just to pay / For a time-share down in Destin.” The subtle nods to her Eras Tour stops in Tampa and Houston are proof of her knack for embedding real-life events into her art.
Swift also takes aim at her longtime critics. In “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?” she lashes out at media outlets that vilify her, likening herself to a caged animal: “I was tame, I was gentle ’til the circus life made me mean / Don’t you worry folks, we took out all her teeth.” This biting commentary harkens back to her reputation era and echoes tracks like “mad woman” from folklore.

Swift’s lyricism shines most brilliantly in tracks like “How Did It End?” The bridge alone is a masterclass in poetry:
"Say it once again with feeling / How the death rattle breathing / Silenced as the soul was leaving / The deflation of our dreaming / Leaving me bereft and reeling / My beloved ghost and me."
It’s a stunning piece that cements Swift’s status as one of music’s great storytellers.
However, not all lyrics hit the mark. Lines like “And my friends all smell like weed or little babies” in “Florida!!!” feel awkward and out of place. Similarly, “Touch me while your bros play Grand Theft Auto” in “So High School” borders on cringe-worthy. These moments make you wonder if Swift’s team ever questions her choices—or if they’re simply swept up in her stardom.
Then there’s the controversial “I Hate It Here,” where Swift reflects on a party game in which friends choose an era they’d prefer to live in. Her pick, the 1830s, is quickly qualified with “but without all the racists / And getting married off for the highest bid.” While likely unintentional, this lyric comes off as insensitive, trivializing an era fraught with systemic oppression. It’s a stark reminder that even megastars can fumble—and that privilege doesn’t always come with self-awareness.
Ultimately, The Tortured Poets Department is not for the casual listener. It’s a treasure trove for devoted fans who understand Swift’s lyrical callbacks and personal references. For newcomers, it might feel overwhelming or even cryptic. But for those of us who have followed her journey, this album is a gift—a layered, emotional layer that captures the complexities of her relationships, her fame, and her inner world.
Swift’s ability to connect with millions through her music is undeniable. With The Tortured Poets Department, she once again proves why she’s not just a pop star but a generational artist, creating an album that’s bound to leave its mark on history.
So, is it worth the hype? Absolutely. Just be prepared for a few bumps along the way.

In a world where teen dramas often revel in chaos—think hardpartying high schoolers, clandestine schemes, and angst on overdrive—Netflix’s Heartstopper is an anomaly.
Adapted from Alice Oseman’s beloved webcomic and graphic novel series, this sweet and heartwarming show skips the drama of its title and instead delivers something quieter, softer, and infinitely more comforting.
shuffle seats them next to each other, and what begins as a casual friendship grows into something far more meaningful. Their journey—from tentative allies to something closer to love —is the beating heart of the series.

here. Heartstopper thrives in its restraint, offering a tender portrait of what it means to navigate love and identity as a teenager.

its core, Heartstopper is about Charlie Spring, a 14-year-old boy a British grammar school who already endured the trials of coming out. He’s faced bullying,

The world of Heartstopper is almost disarmingly kind. The adults are understanding, siblings are friendly, and bullies —when they appear—are outnumbered by allies. It’s a far cry from the hard-edged realities many LGBTQ+ teens face, but that’s precisely what makes it so special.
In this bubble of kindness, even the series’ tougher moments— Charlie’s painful relationship with a closeted boy, Ben, or Nick’s struggle to understand his own bisexuality—are softened by the
accepting shines in a role that feels like an antidote to years of indifferent or disapproving TV parents.
Yet, Heartstopper doesn’t ignore the complexities of adolescence entirely. It touches on homophobia, self-doubt, and the pressure to conform. Charlie’s decision to join the rugby team, for instance, is as much about pursuing Nick as it is about challenging stereotypes of what a “gay boy” should be.
In many ways, Heartstopper feels like a throwback to simpler times. Its milkshake-fueled double dates and heart-to-hearts are reminis-

sensibility, articulate refreshing approach to sexuality as a spectrum.

For viewers accustomed to the intensity of shows like Euphoria, this might feel almost quaint. There’s no sex, drugs, or swearing here—just earnest conversations, warm embraces, and the occasional animated heart popping into view.
It would be easy to dismiss Heartstopper as too sweet, too soft, too sanitized. But its very lack of cynicism is what makes it so powerful. At a time when many stories about LGBTQ+ tee-
ns focus on trauma, Heartstopper offers an antidote: a celebration of joy, love, and acceptance.
The series also succeeds because of its relatability. From the awkward first crushes to the constant overthinking of text messages, it captures universal teenage experiences with authenticity and charm. Its characters feel real, their struggles resonate, and their triumphs feel earned. This is a world that celebrates individuality while gently challenging stereotypes, all without losing its sense of humor or warmth.
This show is about showing that happiness is possible. For LGBTQ+ viewers, especially younger ones, that’s an invaluab-

Recent highlights include a Phoebe Philo leather drop-waist jacket paired with square-toe pumps and a quirky plaid Vivienne Westwood suit with scalloped closures. These bold choices, styled by Haley Wollens and Austen Turner, showcase her ability to merge high fashion with effortless cool.
Off the carpet, Sevigny continues to wow. At New York Fashion We-
ek, she donned a custom “I Love New York” T-shirt dress by Dauan Jacari with a yellow Telfar bag and Ugg boots. At TIFF, she turned heads in a tulle bubble skirt by Renaissance Renaissance and a white lace Balenciaga gown, proving her versatility and flair for the dramatic.
In a world where stars often adhere to cookie-cutter glam, Chloë Sevigny is a refreshing anomaly. She proves that true st-
yle isn’t about chasing trends but about embracing individuality. Whether through her role choices or her bold sartorial statements, Sevigny has become an enduring become an enduring icon of Hollywood and New York cool —unwavering in her ability to make fashion feel personal, and always staying true to herself.

What sets Heartstopper apart is its simplicity. Unlike many coming-of-age dramas, the series doesn’t hinge on sensational plotlines. Instead, it focuses on the quiet moments: a glance held just a second too long, a hand almost brushing another, the inner turmoil of typing and retyping a text message.
Visually, the show nods to its graphic novel origins with delightful animated flourishes. Sparks of electricity jump between fingers that nearly touch; hearts float around a character’s head as they realize their feelings. It’s a clever touch that heightens the emotions of key moments without ever feeling heavy-handed. There’s no need for over-the-top theatrics
le message By the time the final episode ends, Heartstopper feels less like a TV show and more like an emotional reset It’s warm, hopeful, and unapologetically wholesome the kind of story that reminds us of the magic of first love and the importance of finding people who see us for who we truly are
Whether you’re a teenager navigating those tricky years or an adult who remembers them all too well, Heartstopper is a comforting reminder that kindness, love and connection still matter And sometimes that’s exactly what we need

I’m a Hirono boy
Discussing Popmart’s storm over Its fans (and me)
by Janzen Jacinto
“Labubu” , “Molly”, “Hirono”, and “Cry baby” are some of the mainstream toys that somehow are healing the “inner childs” of many, Popmart has captured the attention of the pop culture of children but mostly children at heart
Imagine a world where people vest their money towards something that does not exist until you open it but it's addicting, collecting a whole collection with a painful financial cost but It s relieving or call a plastic toy your “baby”, this is the current trend of today There is depth and something special behind these toys Especially that Popmart captured my inner child with Hironos
What is a Pop Mart?
Founded in 2010 by Wang ning Popmart, a chinese toy company focusing on a blindbox concept toy format “ A leading brand in the world of collectible art toys” according to blindboxbuzz com And Popmart addresses its own purpose which is “create pop culture based products based on classic characters that appeal to the young”
Either It’s a Labubu, Dimoo, Molly, Kubo or a Hirono you see their top selling products across social media platforms, their customers bringing them as an “essential” item to their day-to-day life or as a collectible prompt to area A point of view of the downside of Popmart s products
With a revenue on 2023 with a total of 6 35 billi-

on Chinese Yuan or 51,672,064,277 25 Philippine peso It s market over mainly for toy enthusiasts wasn’t just enough so people who never knew they would buy toys are seeing themselves taking part of this potentially effective marketing scheme over blind boxes “Healing my inner child" is what is common between the fans of various toys from popmart are telling the public with their collections Interviews from a Singaporean tiktok creator, @lawrenceh conducted an interview with a title of “thoughts on the POPMART craze” The majority who are not fans mostly pointed out two points One, people only feel the excitement of buying and the short amount of period owning it which to them sounds boring Two, paying a “pricey” amount over something that you may or may not be cute, and petite boys are a need Hironos taking part in my personal Identity, being heavily Influenced by Tiktok content creators I have seen that Hironos are being brought about in their everyday life which tends to adapt as their personality which I have followed with Upgrading my social life, posting Hironos have gained attention from many people I myself as part of the active pop-culture in general, purchasing these toys that are a part of that creates the sense of “belonging” to this trend
What do I do with them? I find the joy of seeing them spread across my room Bringing them along with my day-to-day activities to simply add something "aesthetic” to my life
It s (not just) a plastic toy Happiness is not about spending but enjoying it

Alongside these collectible “designer” toys Popmart’s toy choices have a certain selected background behind their products To use Lang’s Hironos for example he is a known artist and his art has now been converted to a physical piece that is now being collected by many With a background that his art is created to “highlight the subtle emotional fluctuations of people in life, the ups and downs of life, and the way others perceive us affects us so much” noted by Artoyz com
Multiple products that come from this company select artists that transfer their works into a physical art Multiple labels of Popmart have collective that offer a diverse stories, brands, and designs compared to other main brands toys
Collectible culture is a cultural phenomenon that involves collecting items or information as a way to express individuality showcase interests, and gain a sense of achievement according to Yirou Wang of Francis Academic Press Lifestyle in the context of Popmart s toy blends now as addiction paves in once bought and mainly witnessing products across social media platforms Filipino celebrities such as Vice Ganda Marian Rivera
and Jinkee Pacquiao are seen to heavily Influence the Filipinos in buying and joining in the hype of Popmart’s market
The sense of gambling is in these blindboxes Purchasing a toy that can or can not be what you want is an example of gambling Gambling but just in the form of “aesthetically pleasing” collectible toys
A point of view of a Popmart consumer (Janzen Jacinto a Hirono boy) in perspective
Several friends of mine commented that I myself look like a Hirono Which for me concludes that this is a now developed pers- onality of mine As per owing (as of now) 4 Hirono collectibles, are given names which are now my children Because for me they do look adorable and cute to own But in the perspective of a Popmart consumer what are the ups of owning them: Developing an occurring lifestyle, an urgency that purchasing this because others create the sense that these little, cute, and petite boys are a need Hironos taking part in my personal Identity, being heavily Influenced by Tiktok content creators I have seen that Hironos are being brought about in their everyday life which tends to
Hello,Love,Again: A BittersweetReunion
The Goodbye captivated audiences with its heartfelt portrayal of OFW struggles and a love story tinged with hope. Its sequel, Hello, Love, Again, reunites Joy (Kathryn Bernardo) and Ethan (Alden Richards) a decade later, now exlovers navigating the harsh realities of life as migrants in Canada. Set against the backdrop of the pandemic, the film explores themes of economic disparity, emotional exhaustion, and the strain of survival, grounding its romance in the

stark truths of blue-collar labor and systemic challenges faced by OFWs.
Director Cathy Garcia-Molina trades the idealism of the original for a rawer, more mature exploration of love and connection. Joy and Ethan’s struggles—intense arguments over cash jobs, unresolved emotional wounds, and incompatible dreams—make for deeply human and relatable storytelling. Bernardo and Richards deliver compelling
performances, with Bernardo’s mix of strength and vulnerability and Richards’ subtle expressiveness anchoring the film’s emotional weight. It may not match the original’s magic, but it resonates deeply with those willing to embrace its honesty.

New species of ‘Lipstick Vine’ discovered in the Philippine rainforest

by John Michael Lagazon
Aeschynanthus pentatrichomatus, a beautiful name for a beautiful newlydiscovered flower species In the depths of the Philippine rainforest scientists have discovered a lipstick vine species that is entirely new to the scientific community
A scientific expedition to a remote rainforest
The team included Jayson Mansibang, Adriane Tobias, and Pastor L Malabrigo from the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) They were accompanied by Dr Chris Thorogood, Deputy Director and Head of Science at the Oxford Botanic Garden and Arboretum
The bold expedition was led by a member of the Banao Indigenous Community in a remote rainforest in Barangay Balbalasang Balbalan Kalinga The first days of their journey were met with harsh conditions and obstacles The rainforest was filled with dense groups of bushes
which had to be chopped down with machetes
The discovery of a new species
The team realized they had stumbled upon a specimen unlike any related type of lipstick vine known to date Among the species found in the forest, one stood out – a specimen of the lipstick vine This plant displayed a clear pattern of delicate purple mottling that matched the arrangement of its flowers to those of a European foxglove
Etymology of Aeschynanthus pentatrichomatus
The team named the plant Aeschynanthus pentatrichomatus from the Latin words ‘penta’ and ‘trichomatus’ which means five and trichomes respectively Trichomes are hairlike outgrowths deep in the throats of the flowers

Heart cockles being ahead of humanity

by Tristan Roma
Scientists have recently discovered that a clam named the heart cockle has developed and used fiber optics in nature This is the first time that we have seen fiber optics in nature In a study done on November 19, 2024 in the US, scientists found out that to get the nutrients, the clam needs, are gained from using fiber optic technology The clam uses fiber optics as a way to filter out light which gives it nutrients from
photosynthesis
An odd characteristic of the clam's tissue is that it resembles fiber optics, which have been discovered through studies on the cardiac anatomy of heart cockles and clams Clams have light-guiding structures in their mantle and foot, which are the parts of their bodies used for locomotion and burrowing These structures are composed of biological fibers that use reflection to focus light The clam's body fibers appear to

control the light that the organism's bioluminescent cells create, indicating when and where the light is visible
The heart cockle demonstrates how even the most primitive animals may inspire cutting-edge technology by controlling and directing light through its biological processes, even if it may not be using fiber optics in the traditional sense Instances of how nature has developed mechanisms that humans are only now starting to comprehend and engineer in the natural world The heart cockle shows us that we can discover and engineer concepts of technology never before perceived by humans This just shows how important nature is and what it can give to us

Leading with AI, Lagging in Skills
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is quickly becoming a common tool used in Philippine-based companies However high officials face the challenges of upskilling their workers to have competitiveness
Eternal Renewable Energy

by Raine Luis Cruz
Whenever plants undergo photosynthesis, or when they absorb water through their roots, which pass through the phloem and xylem, they create an electrical potential that can be used as a form of energy Plants like other living things possess a circadian rhythm; their natural clock This cycle goes on day and night, which captures the sunlight required for photosynthesis
A study by AIP Publishing and by researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur discovered a link to the natural process of plants and the generation of an electrical current With this process,
To further investigate this phenomenon, the authors conducted an experiment
involving the insertion of electrodes into the xylem of Pontederia crassipes (water hyacinths) They then connected the reservoirs with electrodes onto pieces of Dracaena sanderiana (lucky bamboo) to examine how electrical potential shifts depending on the circumstances
Authors discovered that plants are capable of modifying the flow of sap or other fluids alongside the day and night cycles They also found out that with the decreased concentration of ions or increased pH (acidity) the electric streaming potential rises
Therefore the utilization of this newly discovered energy source will be put to experiments
According to PwC's 2025 Global CEO Survey, 75% of the 32 Philippine CEOs surveyed are confident in using AI within their core business processes This is higher than the global average of 67%, illustrating that Philippine companies have a greater trust in AI's potential to improve operations
PwC notes that this signals “a proactive approach to leveraging technology for efficiency and growth ” Mary Jade Roxas-Divinagracia, PwC Philippines deals and corporate finance managing partner, explained that AI could also provide deeper insights into consumer behavior However, Filipino CEOs are also aware of the skills gap related to technological advancement
Keeping up with the rate of rapid digitalization and recruiting workers with critical skills needed for company operations remains a challenge A PwC survey found that 28% of CEOs still see technological disruptions as a big threat to their
businesses
Surveys indicate that upskilling is particularly needed in data analytics, digital transformation, and emerging technologies The increasingly technologydriven business landscape demands immediate action from Philippine companies
Upskilling efforts should prioritize these areas, as they are critical for success in the modern business world Still, AI adoption is seen as a major factor in meeting operational needs and ensuring viability 88% of Filipino chief executives expect AI to be systematically integrated into essential business areas within the next three years
Roderick Danao PwC Philippines chair and senior partner, stated on Tuesday “The rapid advancement of AI and digital technologies is fundamentally reshaping how businesses operate and compete in market ”

A groundbreaking study demonstrates that plants can generate electricity that varies with their circadian rhythms, opening up new possibilities for environmentally sustainable energy production. AniruddhaGuha
The Giant Heart Cockle got it’s name by two halves together are heartshaped. Hence, the name “Cardiidae”, similar to “cardio.”

When ears fail, wings prevail

by Paul Benedict Mari Callorina
Study Finds in a groundbreaking study, researchers from Johns Hopkins University have uncovered an extraordinary ability in bats to compensate for hearing loss Published in Current Biology, the research reveals that bats brains are hard-wired to quickly and effectively adapt when auditory functions are impaired, raising intriguing questions about whether other animals including humans might possess similar capabilities
temporarily disabled a critical auditory region in the bats’ midbrain using a reversible drug-induced method Despite the hearing deficit the bats adapted immediately, altering their flight paths and vocalizations to navigate the obstacle course They flew closer to walls, increased the length and number of their echolocation calls, and broadened the bandwidth of these calls to enhance the power of their echo signals “Echolocation acts like strobes,” explained co-author Clarice A Diebold, so they were essentially taking more snapshots to compensate for the missing information ”
The findings suggest that bats might rely on alternative auditory pathways or previously unknown neural mechanisms to process sound “It highlights how robust the brain is to manipulation and external noise,” said co-author Jennifer Lawlor

The study led by neuroscientist Cynthia F Moss, involved training bats to navigate a corridor and pass through a window to obtain a treat Researchers then
This swift and robust adaptation is innate rather than learned, researchers discovered The bats’ compensation strategies did not improve with repeated trials, indicating that these behaviors are preprogrammed in their neural circuits
The study opens new avenues of research into sensory adaptation and auditory processing, potentially shedding light on how humans and other animals might adapt to sensory deficits in real time Researchers are eager to explore whether similar mechanisms exist in humans, particularly in scenarios of auditory impairment
“Can this work tell us something about auditory processing and adaptive responses in humans?” Moss asked “The possibilities are exciting and open up a whole new direction for research ”
Discovery reveals ancient water on Mars 4.45 billion years ago
Scientists have uncovered the earliest evidence of water on Mars, dating back 4 45 billion years Using nano-scale geochemistry, researchers identified traces of water-rich fluids in a rare zircon grain from the planet's early crust Elemental patterns, including iron aluminium and sodium indicate that the zircon form-

For the first time in 130 years of recorded history, Mount Fuji remains snowless as Japan heads into November The iconic peak, typically dusted with its first snow by early October, has yet to see a single flake this year due to unseasonably warm weather The delay surpasses the previous record of October 26, set in 1955 and matched in 2016, according to Japan’s Kofu Local Meteorological Office
Japan experienced its joint hottest summer on record this year, with average temperatures from June to August soaring 1 76°C (3 1°F) above normal September maintained the heat, with a northerly shift in the subtropical jet stream allowing warm southern air to linger

ed in the presence of water during the Pre-Noachian period, Mars' earliest geological era
Dr Aaron Cavosie from Curtin University explained that these findings suggest hydrothermal systems, crucial for the development of life on Earth, may have existed on

over the archipelago Nearly 1,500 regions recorded "extremely hot" days temperatures exceeding 35°C (95°F) a stark anomaly for the country
Jet streams, fast-moving air currents that circle the globe, are key players in this phenomenon The unusual positioning of the sub-tropical jet brought prolonged warmth, keeping temperatures far above the freezing threshold required for rain to turn to snow October brought slight cooling, but the month has still been warmer than

early Mars Despite massive meteorite impacts that reshaped the Martian crust, water-rich environments were present, raising the possibility of ancient habitability
Led by Dr Jack Gillespie of the University of Lausanne, the study was conducted by an international team supported

average, delaying Mount Fuji’s usual snowy transformation
The absence of snow is a poignant reminder of the broader impacts of a warming climate While individual weather events cannot be directly attributed to climate change, the trend aligns with scientific predictions of increased temperature variability and

delayed seasonal patterns
by Curtin University and other institutions
The findings open new pathways for exploring Mars' ancient habitability and its potential to support life in its distant past

Mount Fuji’s barren peak underscores the urgency of addressing global warming, as its seasonal snowcap is both a natural and cultural symbol for Japan
Standing at 3,776 meters (12,460 feet), Mount Fuji is Japan’s highest mountain and a revered icon visible from Tokyo on clear days Its snowcapped peak has been immortalized in centuries of art, including traditional woodblock prints Last year, more than 220,000 climbers scaled
the volcano between July and September This year, however, the mountain’s prolonged snowless state serves as a stark visual marker of changing climates in a warming world
This unprecedented delay in snowfall could also impact local ecosystems that rely on seasonal patterns, such as vegetation and wildlife in the mountain's high-altitude zones The lack of snow may disrupt water availability in downstream rivers Scientists and policymakers alike are calling for stronger efforts to mitigate climate change to preserve these delicate natural cycles

Although the loss is unquestionably a setback, The team may also learn a lot from it When facing an experienced opponent like Elevate Volleyball Philippines, the Raging Spikers gave them vital insight into the ODL's competitive environment The game emphasized the

difficulties of competing at a higher level and revealed possibilities for development This first loss shouldn't be seen as a setback, but rather as a chance for the team to learn and grow
They've shown a lot of potential in their second game this season and now it's time to evaluate their performance, identify areas for improvement, and refine their strategies As they head into ODL, the experience they've gained from this game will be incredibly valuable The team is sending a strong message about perseverance and determination on their official social media The best advice, as always, is to "soak up all experiences," reminding everyone how crucial it is to learn
from both triumphs and failures

CoachErwin Elumbaring expressed optimism despite the loss, emphasizing the importance of learning from each match "This game showed us exactly where we stand and what we need to work on," the coach stated "It’s not the losses that define a team, but how they bounce back from them " The coaching staff has already begun analyzing the match footage to pinpoint specific areas for improvement, including serving accuracy, defensive formations and offensive transitions The team is now focusing on sharpening these skills in
preparation for their upcoming games in the ODL season
Team captain Ayeman Pumbaya echoed the coach’s sentiments, acknowledging both the disappointment and the valuable lessons gained from the match “It was tough to lose after such a strong start to the season but we’re not letting this defeat bring us down,” the captain shared “We re taking this as motivation to work harder in training and come back stronger Every game is an opportunity to grow, and we’re ready to prove ourselves in the next match ” The team s morale remains high, with players determined to turn this early setback into a catalyst for improvement
Looking ahead, the ASVTB Raging Spikers are set to face [Insert Next Opponent] in their next ODL match With the lessons from their defeat fresh in mind, the team is expected to make strategic adjustments and come out with renewed vigor Fans can expect a more refined and resilient squad eager to showcase their growth on the court The Raging Spikers are not just playing for victories; they’re building a foundation for long-term success Their journey in the ODL is far from over, and with their unwavering determination, the best is yet to come
