Dry Ice Business introduction The Dry Ice Blasting (DIB) cleaning method is specifically aimed at MINIMIZING DOWN TIME COSTS by cleaning production machinery and equipment ON SITE The use of DRY ICE as a cleaning media has resulted in a cleaning procedure that prevents the generating of secondary waste, such as contaminated water, residual grit media, solvents or other toxic substances, that have to be evacuated and retreated after the cleaning operation.

When dry ice particles are projected on a surface by means of air pressure, dirt layers get removed but the dry ice itself evaporates upon impact, without provoking abrasion, damage or pollution. DIB can therefore most often be used for cleaning of machinery on site, without the need of dismantling, thus saving the costs of stopping production for long periods of time.

In continuous industrial processes it is often impossible to avoid the production installations from getting extremely dirty, so that the reliability of machinery, the quality of the final product and the safety of the personnel are negatively affected.

Considerations concerning the regular and preventive cleaning of production equipment and installations enter into many companies’ plans to obtain a high degree of efficiency and competitiveness.

Production and maintenance managers all over the world are therefore constantly on the look-out for cleaning methods that can increase product quality, save costs and that at the same time are respectful of the ecological environment.

In today’s state-of-the-art machinery and often high level of automation, old known cleaning methods are not always adequate as they are either too aggressive for certain parts of the equipment, time consuming, heavy and extenuating for the personnel, and negative for the environment. DIB technology has therefore become an attractive alternative with very interesting and promising perspectives.

Cleaning Effects of dry ice (solid CO2)

1. Kinetic impact: Dry ice pellets (Ø 1,7 to Ø 3 mm) are projected on a surface by means of air pressure. When they make impact they provoke cracks on the layer of the material to be removed

2. Thermal shock (-78,6°C): the sudden cooling effect provokes an unequal contraction of the different materials which weakens the bonding between the layer and the substrate. The layer becomes brittle, it cracks further and starts to fall off.

3. Sublimation: Once in contact with higher temperature, dry ice (CO2 in solid phase) transforms into gas, which implies an explosive expansion of volume (factor 800). This expansion accelerates the cleaning effect of the thermal shock by rapidly distributing it all over the treated surface. Only the removed residue remains for further disposal.

4. End result: The treated surface remains completely:

Compressed Air Dry ice blasting machines require an important flow of compressed air in order to operate at the required level of blasting pressure.

Most industrial plants have their own stationary compressors and the possibility of supplying between 6 to 8 bar ( 90 120 PSI). However it is not always evident whether they can supply the necessary flow in m3/minute or CFM in order to maintain the desired blasting pressure at a c onstant level, during production processes.

In order to carry out successful demonstrations, it is highly recommended to own or rent a portable air compressor The recommended portable compressors should meet the following requisites:

• Air quality: as dry and as clean (free of oil and other impurities) as possible. complying with class 3 according to ISO norm 8573.1

• Air flow: minimum 6,5 m3/minute or 230 CFM

• Nominal pressure: minimum 10 bar (150 psi)

• Necessary accessories: Water and oil filters and an AFTERCOOLER, which cools down the air. condensates humidity and filters out the water, in order to supply sufficiently dry air to the blasting equipment.

Suppliers of Dry Ice Dry ice is carbon dioxide (CO2) in solid state at a temperature of -79°C. It can be manufactured in different formats, such as Pellets (from 1,7 to 6 mm in diameter) Nuggets (from 8 to 16 mm in diameter) Slices Blocks Dry ice is predominantly used for cooling and conservation of food and pharmaceutical products.

When used for industrial cleaning (blasting), dry ice is used mainly in a format of “pellets”, which are small cylinders with a diameter of 3 mm (similar to rice corn).

Distribution of dry ice is made in polystyrene boxes or isothermal containers that assure its durability for several days.

Dry ice is normally produced and provided by major gas companies who have access to large quantities of CO2 from natural wells or as a by-product of other industrial processes. However, due to market demands for agility, flexibility and lower costs, production and distribution of dry ice is becoming less decentralized and are increasingly being taken over by smaller, more flexible and more specialized firms.

Rental of equipment An important number of clients need the equipment on a sporadic basis in order to carry out very specific cleaning tasks with their own staff, and without the possibility of outsourcing the cleaning service. It is possible to establish a solid business with regular incomes through the rental of blasting equipment and sales of dry ice.

Some considerations based upon real experiences: • Clients do usually need equipment to clean during week-ends, holidays and scheduled stops for maintenance (especially during the summer). Just this represents a potential between 100 to 150 days of rental per year.

• Rental prices vary from € 80 to 200,00 per day (excluding freight costs, dry ice, costs of training, etc.)

• The average consumption of dry ice pellets is approx. 50 kg per hour or 300-400 kg per working day.

• The net income of rental per day may vary from € 200 to 350,00 (including profit made on sales of dry ice) • Some companies specialized on rental of blasting equipment achieve annual incomes from €15.000 to 25.000 per machine.

• A test rental is one of the best ways of accelerating the decision making process in order to achieve the sale of the equipment

External supplier or self-sufficiency?

Own production of dry ice leads to complete autonomy, reliability and high quality service.

• Own production should be considered when: Production costs are lower than costs of purchasing from an external supplier The use of dry ice is frequent and in large quantities and there is no local supplier nearby or within a reasonable distance. Long travel distances imply very high freight costs, long delivery time, risks of not receiving the material on time and a deterioration of the dry ice quality (ideally the dry ice pellets should be used within 3 days from its production).

Production of Dry ice pellets requires:

• Installation of a liquid CO2 Tank

• Pelletizing machine

• Dry ice Containers

• Optionally: a CO2 gas recovery unit

The CO2 Tank is normally rented and installed by Gas companies which also take care of its maintenance and the re-filling with the needed frequency. The interested customer should consider such costs, but the main factor to take into account is the price of the liquid CO2 per kg or ton, which is the largest variable production cost.

The normal conversion ratio from liquid CO2 liquid to dry ice pellets is 2,5 (2,5 kg of liquid CO2 are required to produce 1 kg of dry ice pellets). 1/3 of the liquid CO2 supplied to the machine converts into solid material , the last 2/3 transforms back into gas which would be ventilated and lost, UNLESS you use an Aquila Triventek RECOVERY unit that recompresses and re-liquefies the residual gas. Then, the conversion ratio would be approximately 1,2 The result is a drastically REDUCTION of dry ice production COSTS and a significant INCREASE in PROFITS
