Gold vermeil is a legally regulated term that refers to a high-quality type of gold-plated jewelry.
At Aquila Jewellery we use quality Hamilton gold vermeil for our handmade gold pieces. They each have a thickness of 2.5 microns which won’t rub off.
Gold-plated jewellery can be as thin as 0.5 microns and is likely to rub off displaying a different colour jewellery below.
From a technical point, gold vermeil is a much higher quality of gold plating on jewellery. It’s usually between 14k and 22k, and the plating has to be more than 2.5 microns thick. At Aquila
Jewellery, our gold items are made with a 9ct vermeil gold, covering a 925 sterling silver base with a 2 Micron gold thickness. As a reference point, well known contemporary jewellery brand missoma also uses 2 Microns for their vermeil jewellery.
