Before Candy Crush, Tetris, even before Monopoly which dates back to 1903, there is a tile game that originated in China. A game called Mahjong. Some say this game is over 2,500 years old, wow! However, one of the oldest historical records of the game only goes back to the 1880s. MahJong became so popular in China that it overtook the game of Chess as the game of choice in the early 1900s. Ever wondered how to play or just haven’t played since 2001 on your PC and need a refresher?

The objective of the game is to collect tiles to form a Mahjong hand. Players take turns picking one tile from the wall and discarding one tile. When a player picks up a tile that gives a valid Mahjong hand, the player wins. For more information visit our website. Yes! It’s FREE to play every Friday at 2pm and 6pm and yes, there are great prizes for both games. Prizes include: 1st - $150 Cash plus a $50 Workers Gift Card 2nd - $100 Cash plus a $20 Workers Gift Card 3rd - $80 Workers Gift Card 4th - $50 Workers Gift Card 5th - $30 Workers Gift Card 6th - $20 Workers Gift Card You could download it on your smartphone and play on an App. But nothing beats versing your friends face to face. So, make sure to bring them down and see why this game is so popular to play!

The next event on that day is something very close to my heart. “The Old Tin Shed VIP Xmas Lunch” where we honour the members that started our club and members that have given more than 50 years membership. Without these members we would not have the foundation to keep building and improving so on behalf of the Board and management we thank you and appreciate your support.

President's Report Hello members, With 2020 hitting us ever so quickly this is the first magazine the club has put out this year. On behalf of the Board of Directors, management and staff at our three Workers Clubs, I wish all our wonderful members a Happy New Year and hope all your dreams for the year come true. The Clubs and Community Awards were held at the International Conference Centre early November and we were happy to be finalists in two categories, “Arts and Culture” for our annual children’s Christmas party and “Support of Amateur Sport” for our new sporting fields and grandstands. We can be extremely proud to be finalists but even more so in being a joint winner in “Support of Amateur Sport”. This is a wonderful award and I thank Gary Allen, Steve and his crew for the wonderful job they do maintaining the fields to elite level. Our club is the envy of many. If you haven’t had a chance to visit it yet, please try to fit it into your calendar. The Anita Cobby Fundraiser was held in November and this is also something that we are proud to be involved in. The money raised will go towards building Grace’s Place (named after Anita Cobby’s mother). The primary purpose of

Grace’s Place is to provide a unique place of healing and restoration for children traumatised by homicide. I congratulate Martha Jabour and her committee for the tremendous work they have done with the help of our Club, Blacktown City Council, businesses and individuals who have all contributed to realise this dream. The Children’s Christmas Party was once again a great success and the children love spending this day enjoying rides and treats and, of course, the visit from Santa. Thank you to all the volunteers that helped make it a success. Two very special events were held on Friday 7th December. Firstly, the unveiling of the “Les Winters Sculpture”. Les was a Director and Vice President of the Club, dedicating over 43 years. Les was a very popular Director who was extremely passionate about his Club, his family and long-time partner Kerry. I personally found him to be the perfect gentleman and I have never heard a bad word said against him. He will be missed but his legacy will still live on. The sculpture is on display in the Eastern Terrace. Please feel free to sit and have a drink with Les.

Congratulations to all our Sporting Bodies for the great results and friendships they have achieved and good luck for the oncoming year. A big thank you to all the hard-working committee members for the work and time dedicated in keeping them going. It is not an easy task and all volunteers are welcome. For any members who have lost loved ones or friends, please accept our deepest sympathy and know that there is always someone you can talk to if you are finding it hard to cope. To my Board colleagues, management and staff, lets continue to all work together in 2020 to make our club the place of choice for our members as we continue to make their visits special. To our members. Thank you for making “Our Club” - “Your Club”. Keep smiling and be kind to each other.

CEO's Report Happy New Year! I hope you all had a nice Christmas and I welcome you to the February to March 2020 edition of Talk of the Town. In 2020, the Talk of the Town, will now be published every two months which will serve to keep you updated more frequently. 2020 will see some exciting things happening across the Blacktown Workers Club Group. At Workers Blacktown, the club refurbishment will continue, and like any refurbishment it will cause disruptions, but we will be doing our best to keep any disruption to a minimum. Plans and designs are currently being created and as soon as they become available, I will be sure to share them with you all. At a high-level they will include: completing the external façade of the Club which will include two large LED

On the Ground floor a brand new club entry and foyer will be created, changes to the Impressions dining area, the main bar and surrounding lounge areas. The old TAB area will be turned into a multi-function room, and the Jack McNamara lounge will also be refurbished. The upper Gaming area will be turned into a new Sports Bar and lounge (incorporating TAB). The current TAB area, adjacent to the Eastern Terrace will be used to extend our Gaming floor. The bathrooms currently located within our main Gaming floor will also be refurbished. On Level 1, the Bungarribee International Buffet will receive a long-overdue refurbishment, the bathrooms within the Buffet, the Ballroom and on level 1 adjacent to the Wattle and Waratah Rooms will also all be refurbished. There will also be a couple of new surprises on level 1! The refurbishment will, of course, include new furniture throughout and will give Workers Blacktown a more

modern and luxurious feel that I’m certain you will all welcome. Workers Sports will receive new furniture this year and the bathrooms will also be updated, and Workers Hubertus will soon receive a three-metre-wide LED Screen in the lounge area, perfect for watching sport! Our Marketing team have been working hard creating new promotions for you all in 2020 and look out for some fresh entertainment and shows appearing throughout our Clubs. So, as you can see, 2020 will be a year of change. Change is nothing to fear, change is good! The one thing we know is that the world around us is constantly changing, and we must change with it to ensure the longevity of the Blacktown Workers Club Group for many years to come. I look forward to seeing you throughout our venues and thank you as always for your loyal support and patronage. Thank you,

Music not only improves brain health and function, it makes you happier, smarter and more productive at any age. Listening is great but playing is better. Music therapy is used for many different issues, from stress relief to mental, emotional and behavioural problems. It has been shown to help treat depression and anxiety. It is utilised in educating children as demonstrated through Lalor Park Public School’s (LPPS) latest initiative. It is amazing how music changes lives and LPPS is harnessing the power of music to help students in their support unit.

10

WORKERS GROUP

“The disabilities that these students have include autism and intellectual delay.” says Cathy Ryan, the Support Unit Teacher at LPPS. “The social, emotional and cognitive involvement of the students with this Music Therapy program has been so beneficial that we increased our sessions to include our Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students this year.” Previously, with all students in the support unit, the involvement and interaction of the students was so tremendous that their classroom workload increased. In one example, a student would write and colour-in to music or with the classroom teacher singing to him.

Some students can create order from the sound of bells and know when they were played out of order even though they could not verbally communicate to the teachers. Other students can play the piano keyboard to complete tunes after only hearing a portion of the song. LPPS are seeing great improvement in the students within the support unit since introducing music therapy to the school. The program has been possible thanks to the generous support of the Blacktown Workers Club Group over the past three years, with the most recent funding of $6,280 being celebrated at a school assembly.

Over one million dollars is what the Blacktown City Lantern Club has raised over their 47-year journey so far. The Lantern Club is a group of committee volunteers lifting the limits of children with either hearing or vision loss. In 1972 the Lantern Club was formed after a recommendation from the Parramatta Lions Club and handed over their first cheque to the Royal Institute for Deaf & Blind Children (RIDBC) for $1,000 in the same year. From this time, they were quick to form strong links to the community and focus on the local area, celebrating their first anniversary at the Blacktown Workers Club. Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC) is Australia’s largest non-government provider of education, therapy and cochlear implant services for children and adults with vision or hearing loss. The range of specialist services available is unique in Australia and benefits thousands of people. The Lantern Club has raised funds through raffles, morning teas and holding stalls. They have been one of the shining lights for the RIDBC by contributing over one million dollars. The steady income stream from fundraising that the Lantern Club have been able to produce each year has assisted RIDBC to continue its vital work. The Lantern Clubs raise funds and awareness for RIDBC’s Alternative Format Publications (AFP). AFP create tactile and braille resources for children all over Australia – from babies as young as a few weeks old to school students needing textbooks translated into braille to allow them to keep up with their class. This ensures children are not held back by their vision impairment and are able to live a life unlimited. The Blacktown Workers Club Group (BWCG) is proud to be a supporter of the great work of the Lantern Club, with contributions ranging from $10,000 donations to free room hire for their monthly committee meetings. The Lantern Club are ready to welcome more volunteers to help others in a fun and friendly social setting. If you wish to make a difference in people’s lives, then please contact the Secretary, Anne on 0425 286 474.

art1 /a:t/

noun 1. The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. Art is the best way to describe exactly what Sydney Cars & Coffee is. It is truly a collaboration of the best of the best coming together and displaying art for everyone to enjoy. On the second Sunday of each month, enthusiasts and car lovers alike gather at Workers Hubertus Country Club to exhibit the cream of the motoring world crop. As the clock strikes 7am you can you can almost feel the V8’s roll in on the soles of your feet, with the sound of a 20b rotary engine singing, the smell of E85 floating past you as your eyes draw a tear from the beauty of what is Sydney Cars & Coffee. All cars are welcome, from your prized possession, custom-built Hot Rod, wide-bodied Torana, 1969 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray to your topless 1966 Dark Blue Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake. Even if you don’t have a car to display you can still enjoy the art on show. It is a great day out for the family with breakfast available from Hub Café located inside the Club and if you are needing that little pick me up on the Sunday morning whilst you’re admiring the beauty, we have a coffee blend that will just get you as charged as a HSV GTS R W1. So, make sure to mark every second Sunday of each month in your calendar, gates open at 7am, don’t eat at home as we have breaky available and remember all cars are welcome. Look at this not as an article in our journal, look at this as an invitation to an ever-growing car show, with most months attracting more than 700 cars! We look forward to seeing you there.

Hello Members

Gary Callaghan DIRECTOR

George Vella DIRECTOR

To date this year (Jan to Nov 2019), I am pleased to advise that we have already donated more than $1.1M to local community groups and people in need. Our Group profit before tax @ 30-Nov-2019 is $5.4M, which is pleasingly better than budgeted expectations and also better when compared to the same financial period last year (2018). For further financial information please refer to the Clubs’ noticeboard.
