Who is Aquatica?

After being made redundant just over 17 years ago, Malcolm Box, together with his wife Christina, started Aquatica.

Customers have access to a great deal of knowledge

Malcolm was passionate about quality tapware, had a dream about developing New Zealand’s best laundry tub and was looking forward to building a business, using his 13 years' experience in tapware. He was keen to develop products without the constraints imposed by corporate business practices.

What Malcom and Christina both valued was the contribution that people make to a good business and they wanted to prove to themselves that it was possible to run an ethical family business, that cared about its staff, could model integrity in everything and could still be successful.

These beliefs are the core values of Aquatica today, with over 40 hand-picked staff, committed to the business, to delivering quality, to helping customers and caring about one another. It’s still a family business, 100% owned, and one of the country’s major suppliers of tapware and laundry tubs. Most of the staff have been with the business since their job was first created and these staff are the chief assets of the business. This has meant that customers have access to a great deal of knowledge.

The Sales Department alone has a combined experience of over 150 years in the plumbing industry. Their shared passion for what Aquatica is doing with innovation and service has resulted in their customers seeing them as their best supplier and end-consumers frequently raving about the service they receive.

It means that when we say we deliver customer service we don’t just pay lip-service – an entire culture of customer service has developed in the business since the beginning so that everyone knows that helping someone else in the business helps them to help the customer.

We do fulfil unusual customer requests, if at all possible. We don’t use voicemail – we figure our customers ring up because they want to talk to us. We frequently service product even when it’s an installation fault. Within the business we have four staff in Engineering, two in Product Development and another 20 assembling and testing tapware and laundry tubs. It’s all very well buying a beautiful Aquatica product but it’s really comforting to know that, should something go wrong, you’ve got all that knowledge and a willing attitude to help, to fall back on.

It’s also pretty cool to know that you’re supporting a business doing its level best to operate with integrity, be environmentally-conscious and at the forefront of product innovation.

Save water Save power Save money

It isn’t hard to save water and it can save you money in the long run. Check out the following suggestions, all of which are possible without any great changes to your family’s washing habits.

Saving water is not necessarily about running the tap for a shorter amount of time or having a quicker shower. Families generally run a tap for the same length of time not realising it could be running as high as 15 litres of water per minute. So lowering the flow is the quickest and easiest solution to water saving.

In the bathroom, an easy option for saving water in a mains pressure system* is to fit our German-made pressure compensating aerator. This can be quickly and easily placed into the aerator housing of your existing bathroom tap and will change the flow of your tap to a soft spray of 3 litres per minute. So if it takes 30 seconds to wash your hands, you could start saving more than 8 litres of water every hand wash. If there are 10 hand washes in your family per day, that’s a saving of up to 31,000 litres per year (plus of course the savings in electricity as well). *Note: These aerators are for mains pressure only. On a low pressure system, fitting an aerator could cause cold water to back-feed into your hot water line.

Around 80% of a home’s hot water is used in the shower. If you have good mains pressure, your mixed flow could be up to 20 litres per minute, so a 10 minute shower could use around 200 litres of water. By reducing the flow to 10 litres per minute, you could halve your water usage while still getting a good long shower. A family of four, still showering 10 minutes each a day, could save 400 litres of water a day (or around $600 a year) plus the cost of heating the water which could be another $600 a year. So by simply installing an Aquatica 10-litre per minute pressure compensating washer into a handshower hose, substantial savings can be made.

We don’t recommend reducing the water flow in the kitchen or over the bath as this doesn’t usually save water. You’ll want to fill the jug or the bath until almost full - and the quicker, the better!

So lowering the flow of water is the quickest solution for saving water and, as we’ve already said, your family won’t need to change their washing habits to do it. If you can adopt other practices, such as turning off the tap while brushing your teeth, you’ll save even more!

What water pressure system have you got?

The two most common systems are:

Unequal Pressure: This is the most common system in New Zealand. A header tank or pressure reducing valve is usually used to supply low pressure water to the hot water cylinder.

How to recognise this system • The cold water flow is much greater than the hot.

• There’s a header tank in the loft or a pressure reducing valve just before cold water enters the hot water cylinder.

• Hot water cylinders are marked 3.7m head or 7.6m head.

• Vent pipe through the roof.

Selecting tapware to suit your pressure system is important for trouble-free operation and optimum performance.

Equal Mains Pressure: This system uses a special hot water cylinder which is fitted with a pressure limiting valve for safety.

How to recognise this system

Fortunately, most Aquatica tapware is engineered to work on all pressure systems. However, water pressures vary considerably and it’s important to recognise what sort of system you have to help you make an intelligent choice.

• The hot and cold water flow is strong and equal.

• The hot water cylinder is described as a mains pressure cylinder.

• Almost all gas hot water systems are mains pressure.

Innovative ideas from Aquatica Isolator Filter Stops Installing isolator filter stops to your taps is a great way of protecting ceramic mechanisms from small particles of dirt. These particles can scratch the ceramic cartridge which can then cause the tap to leak. (This applies to all tapware products, regardless of their origin). Isolator filter stops are an ideal solution to this problem because they: • • • • •

Are easy to install Provide good filtering on the line and excellent hot and cold flow Are easy to access when the filter needs cleaning Allow water to be turned off at the sink (rather than at the mains) Come with a stainless steel backing flange for a really smart finish

After all plumbing has been installed, and any tiles fitted, these bath spouts can then be secured in place with an allen key.

Rotary Ceramic Cartridge The rotary ceramic cartridge in the Novecento and Mini Kris shower mixers provide for easy mixing of hot and cold water. As the mixer is turned, the cold water gradually becomes warm, through to hot.

The amount of water flow can also be adjusted during installation using flow control valves on the mixer.

Single Lever Mixers Single lever sink mixers not only provide quick and easy adjustment of water flow, they are also much more hygienic than conventional kitchen taps. Imagine your hands have been contaminated with bacteria during the handling of, for instance, raw chicken. With a conventional tap, you would need to touch both taps to wash your hands, transferring bacteria onto them. You would then reinfect your hands once again when you turned the taps off. A single lever mixer can be controlled with the back of the hand, preventing the transfer of such bacteria.

Kerox cartridges have an innovative disc design which provides more water flow and a smoother shower mix, by giving greater control when moving the lever from hot to warm.

Built into the shower mixer body are these handy control valves.

These valves allow adjustment of the mixer to either limit the flow of water on mains pressure or balance the flow on unequal pressure. This ensures that mixers can be altered to suit all types of installation.

Xera and Oblio Water Filter Mixers The Xera and Oblio water filter mixers include a long life water filter cartridge, sourced from America. The KDF/GAC is a “two-media” cartridge consisting of KDF (high-purity copper-zinc alloy) and GAC (granular activated carbon), providing superior filtration qualities.

Through the electrolytic and oxidation reactions of the KDF and the absorption and entrapment capabilities of the GAC, the KDF/GAC can remove or greatly reduce a wide range of contaminants through to 30,000 litres.

The KDF media also provides a bacteriostatic effect which is hostile to algae, fungi and bacteria. The OKDF30/1 is also Cyst safe.

The Ezimix Shower Mixer with Divertor has a 45mm cartridge manufactured in Europe and is assembled and tested in New Normal shower mixer Ezimix Shower Zealand. It is suitable for equal low, unequal and mains pressure cartridge (left) and Mixer/Bath Filler systems (35-600kPa). Haven’t we come a long way in the last 50 years?

In that time we have seen a huge transformation in our bathrooms. Originally a purely functional cold space where we would spend a minimum of time, the bathroom is now much more than a place to become clean.

Increasingly, bathrooms are designed to be a sanctuary, a place to retreat from the pressures of our busy lives.

While no one, surely, would ever want to return to those “good ole days”, we do appear to be going back to a few of our earlier traditions, but bringing them into the future.

Once upon a time the stand-alone bath was parked in front of the family fire for the weekly wash. 100 years later, the stand alone bath is back, but this time a functional sculpture in a room that is a relaxing haven after a hard day at work.

You might even find a gas fire there to help create warmth and a relaxing ambience.

So we’ve come a long way, with consumers now expecting, and getting, a higher standard of bathroom experience.

And now, to provide a sense of separation but maintaining the convenience, you will often find the toilet, still part of the bathroom, but perhaps tucked behind the shower, or behind a frosted glass screen to provide a greater sense of privacy.

Known more attractively now as the laundry, the old “wash house” continues to maintain its place in the home though what a transformation it has undergone!

The laundry tub is no longer a massive concrete bowl with rubber hoses tied onto conjoined hot and cold taps, but in its place is a work of art! Now with doors or drawers, slim or wide cabinets, stainless or composite tops, simple or stunning sink mixers, Aquatica has a range of tubs to bring the good old Kiwi laundry back to the future.

The lone kitchen tap has also come full circle.

While today’s single lever mixer supplies both hot and cold water, it still means we are living, once again, with the lone tap in the kitchen, bathroom and laundry. Thankfully design is now everything and there is so much choice that it’s hard to know where to start.

Of course nowadays, with the stress and strain of everyday living, the essentials for a comfortable leisure-time existence are seen as being more important than ever. While the added features of cushions and candles have traditionally only been seen in the lounge or bedroom, you will increasingly see these in bathrooms to soften the hard lines and help add to the ambience of an attractive, innovative retreat So whether you live in an older house or a new, modern one, the past and the future look like they will always be inextricably intertwined as we mould the old to suit our modern demands.

Where space is available new builds and renovations alike, are frequently seeing the inclusion of the stand alone bath, with a striking floor-standing bath filler adding an elegance not seen with the traditional built-in bath and spout and with the advantages of a handshower to rinse off the bubbles before stepping out, to wash the kids hair, or to rinse down the bath afterwards with ease. (And add a TV to the bathroom and you know you’ve arrived!)

Mist Mode

Sadly we don’t always have time to soak in a long hot bath and with this in mind, Aquatica have sought to bring a little bit of luxury to the shower area as well. With the release of the Multiport Shower System, consumers now have the ability to personalise their own shower fixtures. This new multiport system offers the option of having up to five outlets. Starting with the 2 or 3 function overhead shower unit with inbuilt LED coloured lights, more options can then be added in the form of body jets and a separate slide shower or even a bath spout. Suddenly the shower takes on an attractiveness of its own, and becomes a place to relax and spend time! Add a Blue tooth handshower and you can even listen to your favourite tunes while you shower.

Bath Spouts Aquatica offers an extensive range of bath spouts, from beautiful waterfall spa spouts to elegant designer standard bath spouts. There’s even a spout that can divert between the bath spout and a handshower great for bathing the children.

Bath spouts are generally suitable for all pressures. Only spouts with internal restrictions are rated mains pressure only. An aerator could restrict flow on low pressure systems but this can be replaced with a flow guide. Adding a divertor will restrict flow slightly.

Aquatica Warranty Aquatica NZ Limited offer the following warranty periods on its range of tapware from the date of purchase.

Residential Use • Tapware - 5 year warranty • Laundry Tub Cabinet – 5 year warranty • Handshowers, Shower Roses – 2 year warranty • Pull-out Sprays and spray heads on Sink Mixer Coils – 2 year warranty • Kmercial tapware – 2 year warranty Commercial Use • Tapware - 1 year warranty • Laundry Tub Cabinet – 2 year warranty • Handshowers, Shower Roses – 1 year warranty • Pull-out Sprays and spray heads on Sink Mixer Coils – 1 year warranty Only high quality workmanship and materials have been used in the manufacture of Aquatica’s tapware. If any workmanship or material is proven faulty during the warranty period, Aquatica NZ Limited will, at its own cost or option, repair or replace the faulty product.

The warranty is transferable but the original proof of purchase from an authorised Aquatica distributor is required for all claims.

Aquatica’s liability will not extend to damage caused by reasonably foreseeable loss such as inappropriate materials in a wet area ie. floating wooden floors.

Waterlines to tapware incorporating a ceramic cartridge or ceramic disc mechanism should have an inline strainer or filter fitted. Absence of these may void the warranty.

Any suspected defect must be notified to Aquatica as soon as possible after discovery.

All repair work must be performed by a plumber who has received authorisation from Aquatica prior to proceeding with the work. Aquatica may immediately authorise repair work to be undertaken, however, this is not necessarily acceptance of liability.

Aquatica guarantee that the tapware will be able to handle temperatures up to a maximum of 70°C. Water pressure up to 1000 kPa is the maximum limit for the tapware. Above this the warranty will become void.

Serial numbers or tags should not be removed from the products as they are essential in establishing warranty.
