Many laptop PC’s for example, deliberately reduce power to the RS-232 port to save the battery. Why Automatic Send Data control makes serial conversion easier As operating systems become more complex, it is increasingly difficult to control an RS-485 driver with standard software and the RTS line. This is especially true in Windows and multi-tasking operating systems. With B&B’s Automatic Send Data Control circuit, driver control is in the converter hardware, so you don’t have to work with software at all. The circuit monitors data flow and enables the driver during transmission and automatically disables it when no data is being sent. There is no need to rework software or install new drivers. Technical Support Note Isolation zones explained Isolated serial card design requires attention to three things: #1. Special optocouplers isolate the serial signals from the PCI bus. #2. Isolated DC-to-DC power supply provides power to each of the ports and port-to-port isolation. #3. The circuit board uses strict spacing rules – we call these isolation zones. Surges follow the path of least resistance, and a tiny gap between circuit board traces is an easy path for surges to reach the delicate computer bus, bypassing expensive isolation components entirely. You’ll find wide isolation zones on B&B Electronics’ 3PCI series of isolated universal PCI cards. If you’re buying boards from someone else, hold them up to the light and check the isolation zones, you might not be getting the protection that you’re paying for - and need.

The Challenge:

Resource Services integrates programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and touch screens with machines to control machine operations in industrial plants for automation and motion control, and in water and wastewater systems for data collection and automation/control. In order to install software and firmware updates, one of Premier’s Field Service Technicians connected a USB adaptor to interface the laptop and the machine. Things were going well until his laptop battery needed charging and he plugged it in. The industrial machine’s controls were hooked up to the customer’s 120 Volt, single-phase power supply in the shop. Unfortunately, the neutral and hot leads to the controls on the machine had been reversed to stop the 120 Volt GFI breaker from tripping. The resulting power surge led to a failed hard drive and USB port on the laptop, as well as a fried USB adapter. (It was an “expensive installation.”)

The Solution:

Premier contacted B&B Electronics for help to prevent this from happening again. For field technicians, laptops are used in a variety of settings and power quality can be inconsistent. A simple power line filter didn’t catch the problem. However, using a USB Isolator from B&B Electronics, will protect the laptop with up to 4 Volts isolation. The Challenge

The SOLUTION

A wastewater treatment plant had a big problem. Rogue currents and ground loops were wreaking havoc with the RS-485 network used to control and monitor the plant. Intermittent data errors interfered with communications between the control system and the remote sensors. It was dangerous, it was messy, and – thanks to troubleshooting, overtime and EPA fines – it was quite expensive.

B&B Electronics solved the problem by installing triple-isolated Ilinx™ Repeaters wherever there was a risk for stray currents. The repeaters ensured that the control network’s communication ports were isolated from one another as well as the power input. This prevented ground loops from developing and stopped current transients at the isolation zones. Data could pass through, but the unwanted electrical events could not. The end results included improved productivity, reduced downtime, reduced maintenance and overtime, and the elimination or reduction of the EPA fines.

B&B Electronics sent a team to investigate the situation. B&B’s experts quickly discovered that the control network wasn’t electrically isolated from the rest of the system. Long cable runs that connect devices with different ground potentials were a virtual breeding ground for ground loops, and the system didn’t include adequate protection against electrical transients and surges. The resulting data errors were inevitable.

Smartphones & M2M Connecting made easy, finally. by Bill Conley You could argue that wireless data communications began in 1782, when Claude Chappe used semaphore towers to send messages between Paris, France, and the city of Lille, 137 miles away. Called the ‘Telegraph,” Chappe’s system was the origin of the word used for electrical messaging systems developed in the following century. It didn’t work in bad weather, it didn’t work at night, there was no network security and the data rate between Paris and Lille was roughly one symbol per minute. But it was the cutting edge of technology in its day, and an instant success. New telegraph lines soon sprang up all over Europe. When Morse code and electrical signaling came along they were faster and more efficient than the Chappe Telegraph, but the name stuck. Data communications have continued to improve ever since. And just as happened with Chappe’s telegraph, it would seem that new technologies must automatically supplant their predecessors. But sometimes that’s impractical. For example, in spite of the improvements things like USB and Wi-Fi, there are still millions of perfectly serviceable serial devices in the world. And new serial devices are still coming on line. Serial technology is reliable, it’s still very useful and so many people have so much invested in existing serial devices that the standard won’t be disappearing any time soon. But as tablets and smart phones become more ubiquitous in the corporate and M2M business world, connecting to serial ports has become a bit more complicated. Tablets and smart phones don’t have serial ports. In fact they tend to have limited wired connectivity of

any kind, largely relying upon wireless communications for their interaction with the rest of the world. They’re wonderful devices, but they’re not natively designed to interact with serial equipment. Manufacturers, suppliers and integrators of M2M equipment – as well as their customers - have a continuing need for serial communications. So what can they do about the communications gap?

How it works Serial device servers can be wired or wireless. The most popular types are network or TCP/IP device servers. In either case — wired or wireless — the serial server translates the serial data into an Internet Protocol (IP) format that can be transmitted across a network. Wired serial device servers use Ethernet cable to connect to the local area network (LAN). Wireless device servers contain a Wi-Fi client similar to the one in your laptop and connect via Wi-Fi, or 802.11. (The most common standards are 802.11b/g and 802.11b/g/n.) Wireless servers can connect to either an infrastructure network or to an AdHoc network. When the Serial Device Server (SDS) network interface is connected to a LAN it provides an IP address that all other network devices can use for sending and receiving information. This address is unique to the SDS. Since this address is the location for all interactions, a secondary reference is used to locate the information or resource required for the specific interaction. This is called a port number. Using the combination of IP address and port number it is possible to uniquely locate any serial port on the

network. It works like this: A serial device server has a physical serial port connected to port 8023 on the network interface. The network interface connects to the network and gets an IP address of 192.168.2.100. After combining the two pieces of information the full address of the serial port would be 192.168.2.100:8023. Any networkconnected device capable of accessing that address can receive data from — or send data to — the serial port. So what’s the problem? Current network SDS devices are designed to be used with an existing network infrastructure. If you have a manufacturing facility, warehouse or office, odds are that you already have a network installed — wired, wireless or both. Connecting to these networks has become much easier with the latest versions of SDS technology. But what happens when you want to talk to a device that isn’t covered by an existing wireless network? A large portion of the desired serial data may come from remote locations that are out of the coverage range of the corporate Wi-Fi network, or in an area where access to the available network is restricted because of IT policy and security rules. How can users access the data from these devices?

Embedded Hotspots There is emerging technology that supports embedded Access Point functionality without changing the SDS functionality. As an example, B&B Electronics’ SDS technology features an embedded AP device that creates a small, self-sustaining Wi-Fi network around the remote equipment that isn’t all that different from the hotspot in a coffee shop. As your technician comes into range of the network, his Wi-Fi tablet or smart phone sees the network, connects to it and receives an IP address from the embedded AP. His device can then access the serial port on the AP using the appropriate IP address and port number. It doesn’t change the way the SDS devices are used, it just makes them easily accessible to tablets and phones. Benefits of embedded AP: • •

Tablets and smart phones will be able to access serial data in addition to existing network devices like laptops. Network devices won’t need reconfiguring to use static IP addresses.

A self-maintaining network won’t lose devices or compromise their access. Users can simultaneously add and access wireless and wired devices on the embedded hotspot. There is no change to the existing use paradigm of networked serial device servers.

The example B&B device can support up to two serial devices, an Ethernet 10/100 network and multiple wireless clients simultaneously. It provides WPA/WPA2 security and an embedded DHCP server. Both external box and embedded module versions are available. Serial ports have been around for a long time, and they represent an earlier generation in communications engineering. But that doesn’t mean that tablets and smart phones shouldn’t talk to them. They still have a lot of information to share.

We’re trying to save a bunch of money on cabling for a plant expansion. We have Ethernet devices – what’s the best way to make them wireless?

You need a wireless bridge. A wireless bridge can be connected directly to your Ethernet device with a short Cat-5 patch cable. Set-up and configuration is pretty easy with the Airborne Management software. The bridge transparently conveys data between a device with a 10/100 Ethernet interface and a wireless LAN without drivers or complicated addressing schemes. This reduces the complexity of wireless system deployment.

Is there a better reason to use cellular instead of RF for wireless? What does it cost?

There isn’t a single best answer – it depends on your application. If your application links well. Cellular doesn’t have those geographic limitations. Cellular connectivity has become very popular and keeps growing, mostly due to the large demand of machine-to-machine devices. It gives the user the ability to access remote devices, connect devices to each other or capture data almost anywhere in the world.

We re-deployed some equipment on our plant floor and since then, we’ve had trouble with signal strength. It’s older equipment and uses RS-232 connections. What can I do?

Standard max range for RS-232 is only 50 feet. Sometimes that distance can be stretched a little, but a better method would be to use a repeater. RS-232 repeaters installed at intervals in the data line refresh the data signals back to RS-232 levels. Each repeater will allow another 50 – 100 feet. A second, more commonly used option is to use RS-422/RS-485 converters which extend distances up to 4,000 feet without the use of additional repeaters. As you look at the distance your equipment was moved, you can choose which option works for your installation.

Anytime a remote device is not wireless, but has Ethernet capabilities, a cellular router would be an excellent choice. Cellular is also often used for redundancy to a cabled network on mission critical applications. If you lose the primary network, the cellular network is an excellent back-up. The average cellular bill varies greatly from carrier-to-carrier and among the data bundlers known as MVNO’s. Plans can vary from a flat data plan to data and time based plans. A typical plan is $12 per mg per month.

How can I connect a USB device at the lab to the computer in my office?

The distance between the devices is always your limitation. The best answer is to use a USB to Ethernet IP device. Basically, it takes a USB device and connects it to the network allowing your office PC to communicate with the USB device.
