BACK TO THE FUTURE BY TYLER KROCHMAL

AquaSox New Look is Based on Mariners Throwbacks

T

ake a closer look at the players’ jerseys, helmets and even your new fan gear. Notice something different about your 2010 AquaSox? That’s right, the AquaSox are excited to display new logos and uniforms, part of an extensive creative overhaul of the whole AquaSox franchise! The new look largely maintains the loveable frog character and the primary color scheme, but in addition adds two new logos to the mix. The “Trident-E” logo is a play on the Seattle Mariners “Trident-M” logo of the 70’s and 80’s. Fans will also enjoy the new “Socks” logo, incorporating every part of the ‘AquaSox’ name into the look! The new team lettering, also in the 70’s and 80’s style, further celebrates the AquaSox 16-year partnership with the Mariners. The new look is actually a first of its kind. With the new logos and lettering, the AquaSox become the first Minor League Baseball team to build their identity based on their affiliate’s throwback logos!

The franchise makeover began last July. Plan B Branding, a San-Diego-grown branding and creative storytelling company, took over the task of renovating the AquaSox look. Plan B Branding has worked to rebrand more than 60 professional sports franchises, including numerous minor league teams, some big league teams and even the World Series. Partners Casey White and Jason Klein sat down with AquaSox personnel, fans and members of the Everett community to learn about the history and personality of the franchise. “Everett loves their beloved AquaSox, their Mariners and Mariners throwback apparel,” said White. “The AquaSox new look marks the next era in AquaSox baseball and celebrates 16 fantastic years with the Mariners.” Fans can purchase the new gear at the renovated merchandise stand at Everett Memorial Stadium, the team store or by visiting www.aquasox.com.

The AquaSox will sport three uniforms this season, each using the new lettering and logos.

And if you think “Hotdog” Jones’ Mariner love-fest stops there, well, as they say, you ain’t heard nothin’ yet. Jones has also had two giant foam rubber fingers that say “#1 AquaSox fan” surgically sewn to his arms. “They’re a bit problematic during dinner time, or when, well, you know, but it sure gets me noticed a lot as I walk around Memorial Stadium on a sunny afternoon” said the superfan. An aspiring baseball player himself, Robert’s son Bobby “Little Smokey” Jones couldn’t be happier about the indoor mini-Stadium. “I love it.

We even get to take batting practice inside the house when it’s raining. And if you hit a ball completely through the wall, it counts as a triple!” The Jones family has even gone as far as to hire an organ player when entertaining guests. “It’s kind of weird,” says one friend who wished to remain anonymous. “Every 10 minutes we all had to yell “Charge!” and do The Wave. I mean, have you ever tried doing the wave with just four people?” Needless to say, Robert “Hotdog” Jones has taken fandom to fanatical new heights.

WHY RIDE THE SOUNDER TRAIN? Save money See the first pitch Hate parking

The biggest reasons for taking the Sounder Train to Safeco Field for a Mariners game are really stacking up. You’ll not only save a bundle on gas, car maintenance and parking, you can kick back and relax as you glide past all the bumper-to-bumper traffic traveling to and from the game. AquaSox Welcome (Back) New Coaches BY TYLER KROCHMAL

The 2010 Everett AquaSox welcome two familiar faces back to the coaching staff this season. New Manager Jose Moreno takes over the reigns of the team, and will be assisted by new Hitting Coach Scott Steinmann. Pitching Coach Rich Dorman and AquaSox long-time Head Trainer Spyder Webb will return from the 2009 staff. Jose Moreno managed the 2008 AquaSox and returns to Everett in his tenth season in the Mariners organization. He managed the Pulaski Mariners of the Rookie Appalachian League in 2009, and has also spent the last five Jose Moreno seasons as the third base coach with Cardelanes de lara in the Venezuelan Winter League (2005-09). In 2007, Moreno managed the Peoria Mariners to an Arizona League Championship with a 37-19 record. He led the Mariners Venezuelan Summer League team from 2001 to 2006.

Along with his Minor League Baseball coaching career, Moreno is also a former player, breaking into the major leagues in 1980 with the New York Mets. He played three seasons in the big leagues with the Mets, Padres and Angels. Scott Steinmann became the first AquaSox player to return as a coach when he was named hitting coach in 1999. He has spent six seasons as a manager in the minors, with five of those teams finishing with winning records. Steinmann also played three Scott Steinmann seasons in the Mariners minor league system, and was a catcher for the AquaSox in 1996. Steinmann enters his fifteenth season in the Mariners organization. Both the new and returning coaches, as well as the new AquaSox players, are excited to make the 2010 season one to remember! Be sure to catch all of the action at Everett Memorial Stadium this season and book your tickets now!

New Northwest League Playoff Format BY TYLER KROCHMAL

T

he Northwest League has implemented a new system for the 2010 playoffs, which will begin Sept. 6. For the first time since the adoption of the short-season format in 1966, the league will operate with a split-season schedule, allowing four teams to advance to the NWL postseason.

choose the playoff schedule for the divisional round. The team may choose to host Game 1, or host Games 2 and 3. The Northwest League Championship Series will operate on a rotating basis, with the team from the West Division hosting Game 1 and the East champion hosting Games 2 and 3 in 2010.

Each team’s season will now be split into two 38game halves, giving teams two opportunities to capture the division pennant. The leaders of the East and West Divisions at the end of 38 games will be awarded the first half pennant, and will receive a spot in the 2010 NWL playoffs. The records will then reset for the second 38-game stretch, allowing all teams an equal shot at the second-half title.

If a team in one division wins both halves, it will meet the team with the second best overall record for both halves in the division series. With the change, only the Pacific Coast League (Triple-A), Appalachian League (Rookie) and Gulf Coast League (Rookie) do not have a split-season schedule.

Everett’s first-half season will run until July 26. The AquaSox then receive a fresh start on July 28 for the second half of the season, giving the team two chances at the division pennant. Stay with the AquaSox all season long for competitive action and The first-half division winners receive the right to great family fun! The winners of the first and second halves within each division will compete in a best-of-three series. The two victors in this round will advance to a bestof-three championship series.

Remembering “The Kid” BY TYLER KROCHMAL

Ken Griffey Jr. retired from the Seattle Mariners June 2 after 22 years in the major leagues and 630 career home runs, which places him fifth on the all-time list. Nearly 23 years earlier, Griffey recorded his first hit, a home run, in his second game as a professional right here at Everett Memorial Stadium! A plaque on the sidewalk at the corner of 38th and Lombard marks the spot where the ball landed after traveling 387 feet and clearing the left field fence. The plaque reads: Ken Griffey Jr.’s first professional hit, a home run, landed near this spot on June 17, 1987. During the fourth inning of his second pro game, Griffey, age 17, playing for Bellingham against Everett in Northwest League action, muscled a 1-0 pitch from Everett’s starter Gil Heredia for an opposite field, three-run home run to left. The ball traveled approximately 387 feet. A crowd of 3,122 was on hand. Everett won the game 7-6. The game was played between the Bellingham Mariners (then the Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the Mariners) and the Everett Giants. The Everett Giants were affiliated with the San Francisco Giants

until 1995, when they joined the Mariners organization and became the Everett AquaSox. The Mariners drafted Griffey first overall in the 1987 amateur draft. He spent the 1987 season with the Bellingham club, then played for the San Bernardino Spirit (Single-A) of the California League and the Vermont Mariners (Double-A) of the Eastern League in 1988. In 1989 Griffey made the Seattle Mariners major league roster, and spent a total of 13 years with the club (as well as nine years with Cincinnati and part of one year with the Chicago White Sox). Where Griffey Ranks All Time Home Runs: 5th (630) Runs Scored: 31st (1,662) Multi-Homer Games: T7th (55) Doubles: 36th (524) Extra Base Hits: T6th (1,192) Intentional Walks: 4th (246) Total Bases: 12th (5,271) Hits: 46th (2,781)
