FINAL YEAR PROJECT

SITE: PASIR PENAMBANG, KUALA SELANGOR, MALAYSIA

SELANGORRIVER

PASIR PENAMBANG, KUALA SELANGOR

PASIR PENAMBANG COASTAL AREAS WERE OCCUPIED BY HEALTHY NATURAL MANGROVE FOREST, WHICH WERE INHABITED BY ABUNDANCE OF PLANT AND MARINE SPECIES.

DUE TO RICHNESS OF NATURAL RESOURCES, PASIR PENAMBANG DEVELOPED RAPIDLY. FISHERMEN BUILT THEIR SETTLEMENTS ALONG THE RIVERSIDE OF SELANGOR RIVER, LEADING TO MANGROVES DEFORESTATION.

THIS RAPID DEVELOPMENT AFFECTED THE LAND AND RIVER ECOSYSTEMS THAT DEPENDED ON MANGROVES TO SURVIVE. THUS, NATURAL RESOURCES DEPLETED AND BECAME EXTINCT. IN THE LONG RUN, FISHERMEN WILL LOSE THEIR SOURCES OF INCOME.

THIS CENTRE SERVES AS MANGROVES PROTECTION CENTRE AND A PLACE WHERE HUMAN AND NATURE COULD CONNECT WITHOUT THE INTERFERENCE OF FISHERMEN’S LIFESTYLE, WHILE PROTECTING NATURAL SPECIES ON THE LAND AND RIVER AROUND THE MANGROVES ECOSYSTEM.

THROUGH THE SYSTEM’S POROSITY AND FORM, THE FORCE OF THE WATER IS MITIGATED. ANCHORED AT THE TOP OF THE CONCRETE PIECES, THE MANGROVE’S ROOTS WILL EVENTUALLY BE ABLE TO SPREAD AND EVEN GROW ONTO THE SHORE.

THIS TIME, MANGROVE FOREST WILL BE REBIRTHED, NOT TO BE URBANISED AGAIN, BUT TO STAY ALONGSIDE THE FISHERMEN COMMUNITY, LOKATOPIA, THE ECOLOGICAL FISHERMEN CENTRE.

THE DESIGN IS CONSTRUCTED FROM TWO SEPARATE PIECES: A HEAD AND A FIN MADE FROM BAMBOO. BECAUSE THE HEAD’S BAMBOO IS LIGHTER THAN WATER, THE TWO ELEMENTS CAN FLOAT IN ADDITION TO ALLOWING MANGROVE ROOTS TO GROW THROUGH THE HEAD.

IN CONTRAST, THE FIN’S BAMBOO IS FILLED WITH UHPC: ULTRA HIGH-PERFORMANCE CONCRETE AND IS DENSER, STRENGTHENS THE FOUNDATION, PROMOTING THE HABITATION OF MARINE LIFE AND BARNACLE GROWTH.

MANGROVE POD MAKING AND DEPLOYMENT

SITE IS LOCATED AT THE WESTERN SIDE OF PASIR PENAMBANG COASTAL AREA. THE SITE IS OCCUPIED BY COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS, MAINLY BUSINESSES RELATED TO FISHERY. THE SITE IS VERY IMPORTANT AS IT SERVE AS THE HARBOR FOR FISHERMENS TO MANAGE THEIR CATCH. THIS SITE ALSO SERVE AS THE CENTRE FOR DISTRIBUTING SEAFOODS AND EXPORTING THEM TO OTHER PLACES. IN OTHER WORDS, THIS SITE SERVES AS THE PLATFORM FOR FISHERMEN TO RUN THEIR ECONOMICAL AND SOCIAL LIFE.

MANGROVES ACTS AS THE IN-BETWEEN OF LAND AND RIVER. WHEN THE IN-BETWEEN WAS TAKEN DOWN, EVERY ELEMENTS OF LAND AND RIVER SURROUNDING IT WOULD FALL APART. AS HUMAN ACTIVITY BECAME THE MAIN FACTOR OF MANGROVES DEFORESTATION, THE ROLE OF MANGROVES IS INTERPRETED BEYOND THE TYPICAL; THAT IS BEING THE IN-BETWEEN OF LAND, RIVER AND HUMAN.

THIS IS AN EXPLORATION ON HOW MANGROVES CAN AID IN FISHERMEN’S ACTIVITIES, THUS BENEFITING BOTH HUMAN AND ALL MANGROVES ECOSYSTEMS.

LOKATOPIA SERVES AS MANGROVES PROTECTION CENTRE AND A PLACE WHERE HUMAN AND NATURE COULD CONNECT WITHOUT THE INTERFERENCE OF FISHERMEN’S LIFESTYLE, WHILE PROTECTING NATURAL SPECIES ON THE LAND AND RIVER AROUND THE MANGROVES ECOSYSTEM.

THE BUILDING SPACES AT THE GROUND FLOOR SPREAD OUTWARDS; TO PROVIDE EFFICIENCY FOR PEOPLE CIRCULATING AND DOING ACTIVITIES THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING. OPEN PLAZA CAN BE ACCESSED DIRECTLY FROM THE LOBBY. FISHERMEN WERE PROVIDED WITH A NEW ORGANIZED WAY OF WORKING. THE SPACE FOR FISHERMEN IS DESIGNED TO EASE THEIR DAILY TASKS WHILE NOT INTERFERING THE NATURE SURROUNDING.

THE EXPRESSION OF TIMBER STRUCTURE, TRANSPARENCY BETWEEN INDOOR AND OUTDOOR WAS INTEDED TO APPRECIATE SURROUNDING ELEMENTS. THE OPENINGS ALONG THE CORRIDOR ALLOWS PANORAMIC VIEWS OF SELANGOR RIVER.

THROUGH THE MAIN PROGRAMME “MANGROVE POD MAKING”, BABY MANGROVES WILL BE DEPLOYED ALONG THE RIVERFRONT THROUGH THE PROTECTIVE FLOATING POD, AND EVENTUALLY GROW TO THEIR MATURE PHASE TO LIVE INDEPENDENTLY WITHOUT THE PODS.

EXPERIMENTATION ON MATERIAL TRANSITION AND JOINTING

A PIXELATED VERSION OF A SCARF JOINT IS USED TO TEST THE POTENTIAL OF TIMBER JOINERY. THE JOINT DETAIL STRATEGY IS DRIVEN BY THE MAXIMISATION OF SURFACE AREA BETWEEN ELEMENTS WHICH INCREASES THE TRANSFER OF FORCES IN THE OVERALL SYSTEM.

HOPES TO TURN THE OLD CONSTRUCTION SITE INTO A COMMERCIAL-COMMUNITY PROJECT CALLED “INDUS-TREE”, AN URBAN FARMING AND MIX-INCOME RESIDENTIAL IN SHAH ALAM.

THE LOCATION OF THE DEVELOPMENT IS UNIQUE – SITUATED AMIDST AN INNER INDUSTRIAL AND RESIDENTIAL AREA, IT WAS CRITICAL TO CREATE A WELCOMING, INCLUSIVE, AND ENERGETIC GATHERING PLACE, ALLOWING LOCALS TO ENJOY THE SAME EXPERIENCE OF “THE ENTERPRISE” VENUE OF SHAH ALAM SECTION 23.

THE TARGET USERS FOCUSED FOR THIS HOUSING PROJECT WERE LOW TO MEDIUM INCOME GROUP OF PEOPLE. MIIXING LOW INCOME GROUP (MINORITY) AND MEDIUM-INCOME GROUP (MAJORITY) WILL KEEP THE MINORITY FROM BEING THE VICTIM OF SOCIAL INEQUALITY, THUS PRODUCING A HEALTHY COMMUNITY.

THEREFORE, THE DESIGN DOESN’T AIM TO BE A “GENRE BUILDING”, LIKE THEY DO IN MOST SITUATION. INSTEAD, IT STARTS WITH THE CONSISTENCY OF THE PUBLIC CIRCULATION, PEDESTRIAN EXPERIENCE, LANDSCAPE INTERFACE, AND FINALLY LEADED TO A RESULT OF AMBIGUITY.

THE EXISTING CONDITIONS AND RELATING STRUCTURE OF THE CURRENT BUILDING HAD TO BE CAREFULLY INVESTIGATED AND INCORPORATED INTO THE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN. THE LARGE SITE MEANT THAT ZONING HAD TO BE EXCEPTIONALLY CONSIDERED TO ENSURE SECTIONS FELT INTIMATE BUT ALSO RETAIN THE OPEN-PLAN BEER HALL EXPERIENCE. MINIMAL FINISHES CREATE A CONTEMPORARY INDUSTRIAL FEEL WHILST THE FOUND ITEMS TAKE INSPIRATION FROM THE DESIGN OF A FACTORY.

THIS BUILDING CONSISTS OF FOUR TYPES OF UNITS. EACH UNIT TARGETED DIFFERENT KINDS OF USERS, SUITABLE TO THE MAIN GROUPS OF RESIDENTS AROUND THE AREA. WHILE THE ORIGINAL LAYOUTS WERE PROVIDED, FLEXIBILITY FEATURES WERE ADDED TO SUIT THE USERS NEEDS. THEREFORE, USERS WILL HAVE MORE OPTIONS IN PLANNING THEIR HOUSE AND CAN APPLY SOME CHANGES ACCORDING TO THEIR PERSONAL PREFERENCES.

TYPE 3 AND TYPE 4 COMES WITH ROTARY HYDROPONICS AS AFFORDABLE AND ADAPTIVE URBAN FARMING METHOD. THEY ALSO COMES WITH SOCIALIZING AREAS IN BETWEEN TWO UNITS TO ENCOURAGE SOCIAL INTERACTION.

TYPE 1 AND TYPE 2; EXPANDABLE SPACES CAN BE UTILISED AS LANDSCAPING WHEN NOT IN USE. THEY CAN BE USED TO ADD ANOTHER ROOM FOR EXPANDING FAMILY. EXPANDABLE BALCONY MODULE DESIGNED TO BE EASILY REMOVED AND BE REPLACED FOLLOWING SEASONAL CHANGE.

IMAGINE A CITY THAT SURPASSES ALL OTHERS IN TERMS OF CONNECTIVITY—THE MOST CONNECTED CITY IN THE WORLD. THE PATTERN WAS ACCENTUATED INTO THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SOUND WHILE REPRESENTING THE TWO DESCRIPTIVE WORDS OF “JUXTAPOSE” AND “INTERTWINE”ABSRACT TRAITS OF WOLVES’ HOWLS. THE FORM MUST INCLUDE A SPACE THAT CAN BE USABLE FOR HUMAN TO REACT TOWARDS THE SPACE THUS, EFFECTING THE EMOTION OF A PERSON.

DEEP FEELING OF ONE’S FEAR, FROM THE PREY THEY SEEK BUT YOU TO TREMBLE, THEIR BLOODLUST, THE FEAR BUBBLE BURSTING, THEIR TERROR RADIATING, AND HELPLESSNES STARTS HISSING FROM INVISIBLE TO VISIBLE. THE TRUE COLOURS ARE OUT, THE COLOURS OF A HOWLING WOLF.

SERIES OF MOCKUP MODULE WAS MODELLED, EXPERIMENTED AND DEVELOPED SO THAT IT FITS THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A WOLVES’ HOWL. WHILE THE FORM OF A MODULE RESEMBLES THE TANGIBLE ELEMENTS, THE SCULPTURE PRODUCED FROM THE CONNECTIONS OF ONE MODULE TO ANOTHER REFLECTS THE INTANGIBLE FORM A HOWL AS A WHOLE.

A WHOLE SERIES OF TRY AND ERROR LEAD TO VARIOUS TYPES OF JOINTINGS AND CONNECTIONS WHICH THEN BECAME AN IMPERFECTLY INTERTWINED, A LOOP-LIKE FORM OF A SCULPTURE THAT MIMICS THE OVERLAPPING SOUNDS PRODUCED. THE COMBINATION OF DIFFERENT FREQUENCY OF DIFFERENT HOWLS WAS INTERPRETED AS A LOOP HOLE WITHOUT AN ENDING, JUST LIKE WHEN A PACK OF WOLVES WAS CALLING OUT FOR EACH OTHER, WETHER FOR MOURNING, MATING, NOR FOR HOSTILE INTENTIONS.

TORROR WAS INSPIRED FROM THE WORD “TERROR”. THE IRONY IS THE TERROR DID NOT COME BY THE FIERCENESS OF THE WOLVES, BUT FROM WITHIN THEMSELVES. THE SCULPTURE INTENDS TO REPRESENTS THEIR LOUD BUT VOICELESS SOUND OF HELPLESSNESS AS THEY WERE TREATED BADLY BY MAN. TO BRING IT INTO QUESTION, ARE THESE SO-CALLED MERCILESS AND DANGEROUS CREATURE THE GUILTY ONE? ARE WE REALLY THE INNOCENT ONE?
