1. URBAN HOUSING The Studio focused on understanding and studying the concept of mass housing at urban area of Ahmedabad at Pragatinagar. After case studies of different kind of house typologies, bylaws, needs and other affecting factors, a mass urban housing was designed at given site at Pragatinagar, Ahmedabad, within set parameters, realistic regulations and bylaws following from GDCR.

Site contains Gujarat Housing Board society’s housing units. Total site area is about 1,51,180 sqm. There are approx 856 units of houses studied built with consumed FSI of 0.66(with extension) . Provided built up area is about 63730 sqm and extended built area is about 16800 sqm.

Concept And design Staggering and Stacking of entire building block contains four or five floor plates on each other to get maximum northen and southern light to each housing unit. At earlier stage staircase and lift shaft were considered in single building block module, but after when they were considered as outside unit for easy outside access, it creates chain form that holds all building blocks together

Site is located at dense area of pragatinagar, Ahmedabad. Site is surrounded by 18m, 24m and 24m respectively by main roads, and other side is connected with other housing sites.

After distributing plot into 4 equal housing plots and 40% land for government recreational purpose, each one plot gets approx 5800 sqm area.

Distribution of plots were done on basis of rule that each one plots should have at least one side main road direct access so government land of 40% area is situated at central part of site.

Development After 10% space to common open plot and front and back margin accordingly to GDCR bylaws, and fulfilling 4 FSI, building blocks creates a rigid module on site, so there are green terraces punctures are designed to break the monotonous form of building block. Common plot marked green in concept models is designed at southern corner of site to get maximum direct daylight to each block.

2. AIR-FORCE SCHOOL Proposed project by Military Engineered services (MES), to design AirForce School at Vayushaktinagar Indian AirForce campus, Gandhinagar, was taken as Design Thesis project. AirForce school in vayushaktinagar, gandhinagar is mainly set up to provide education to children of AirForce officers, Army officers, and very few amount of civilians on selected criteria. AirForce schools are known for its discipline, punctuality and strict behaviour. It is same as common private schools or government kendriya vidyalaya but main difference in this is that, it teaches lessons about patriotism towards our country and to serve more and more for our country, and so that there are so many activities to do the same are performed in AirForce schools.

Proposed Site

Site is located beside Vayushaktinagar Indian Airforce campus, on National Highway 147,at Lekawada village, Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

Total proposed site area is 35,817 sqm.

Site has gradual slope of about 0 to 2 metre. Site is little far away from main road so there is less noise pollution. Other buildings at vayushaktinagar are little far away from site so context can be neglected for designing school.

Sunpath, Wind Direction and Climate analysis

Gandhinagar lies on 79m above sea level. Gandhinagar's climate is a local steppe climate. During the year there is little rainfall. The temperature here averages 27.2 °C. The average annual rainfall is 746 mm.

Site Context and Topography Site is covered with full of trees. Site has negligible slope of 0 to 2 mtrs, middle part of site lies in 0 mtrs level which parts’ area is about more than 12000 sqm, it can be use for designing a school building.

Access: 3 out of 5 sides are connected to internal roads. That internal road is connected directly to national highway 147.That main road which leads one side to Gandhinagar city and another one side at Chiloda village. Opposite side of site is CRPF campus besides with lekawada village.

Concept Development

common amenities like library, labs, pet room, NCC room administration and other offices academics block

Site is full of trees, which can be useful to designing a school building and sports complex, and site can be entered from roads by 3 sides.

Without removing any tree from site and with response to nature, one major part of site which has comparatively no trees as per shown in upper diagram, its area is about 11200 sq.mt. can be mainly use for school block design.

After defining entry, form of building is designed accordingly site’s shape. Which has 4 different type of blocks. These blocks are divided in 3 major functions of school. These 3 major blocks are: academics block, administration block and common activities.

Major drawback of that concept was that build form creates separate building blocks which are not connected with each other which is major concern so when one block is added it creates a build form and it makes entire building in single module Main design concept is derived from the behaviour of Indian Airforce’s regulations, strictness and discipline, It can be achieved from repeatedly staggering of build forms ground as activity or play area

3. URBAN INSERT The Studio focused on understanding and studying the dense context of World Heritage City-Ahmedabad old city area.

Old city’s two prominent spaces ‘Sankdi sheri’ nr. manek chawk and ‘Jethabhai ni pol’ were taken as case study and site.

Both were totally different from eachother. One is full of crowded place, which contains mainly commercial shops like jewellery, clothes, utensils store, eatery etc., Residence and some kind of mix used spaces. So it is over crowded place during full day time. While another one contains mainly Residence area. So the challenge was to introduce design program according to surveying and detailed analysis of different affecting factors to respected site.

URBAN INSERT AT OLD CITY, AHMEDABAD Prominent part of Old city area of Ahmedabad- Sankdi sheri, Nr. Manekchowk was analysed, studied and later taken as site for urban insert studio. This site contains mix use spaces like commercial shops, residences, institutes, important landmarks(Havelis), institutes and religious buildings like temple, derasar, mosque etc..

About Program...

Choosing this site for learning centre for women is beneficial because this buildings’ main purpose is to give employment to needy ones, so women will be got some employment by doing some activities there, like- sewing classes, cooking classes, gruh udhyog for making eateries like khakhra, papad, nakeen, pickle etc.. For selling goods produces by this gruh udhyog, some shops are located at ground floor. Gym is proposed at first floor which is existed at ground floor. Computer class and workshop for learning are truly beneficial for women empowerment centre.

About site...

Site is located at Sankdi sheri at very dense context of mixed use spaces like commmercial and residences. Existing building- Rojgar kendra is been closed for many years. Some activities to give employment to needy ones were performed there. Existing building has Gym located at ground floor, which is also kept closed over the years.
