Sometimes a vertical element forms a flooring and further when changes its volume forms a display unit, creating seamlessness in the space.

Brief Outline: The intention of this studio is to develop a multitude of notions, approaches, positions and arguments with reference to interior techniques and its implications on the interior design practice. Here interior technique is defined as “A method, tool and medium that modifies, alters, conceals, exposes an interior element, thus transforming the transformable quality of the space.” The studio offers an opportunity to develop a design position in different contexts by questioning preconceived notions of interior design. It emphasizes the relationship between Interior techniques and its expression, identity and design outcome. The first four weeks are part of the common foundation program, where students from all streams work together to develop common skills and abilities. The later part of the studio is largely divided into two modules: the first module builds an argument on interior techniques through existing projects and the second module intends to develop a systematic approach to the application of the argument in three different contexts. It is an opportunity to develop an individual design position for disparate sites keeping the program constant.
Learning Outcomes: After completing this studio unit, the student will be able to: • Ability to develop a systematic argument/position/ approach on the interdependence between interior techniques and practice. • Ability to translate/represent the design argument/ position/approach through 3- dimensional and material based outcomes. • Ability to organize and evaluate the programmatic and pragmatic potential of derived design position. • Ability to build a design vocabulary and test it through the selected context (site/program).

Week 01-02 | FD PG Common Exercises
Objectory Process: A traditional handcrafted device used in the kitchen of almost every household in India called the Chakli Sacha. It is originally known for the purpose of making Chakli, a savoury snack from India. It is a spiral shaped snack with a spiked surface. There is so much one can do with this machine. It has a unique brushed brass finish and convenient design that allows one to prepare your favorite Indian snacks like steamed idiyappam (noolputtu), fried snacks like Sevaiya, Farsan Sev, Gathia, Chakli, etc. It gives you many options for shape and size, some comes with 5 to 6 different types of jaali moulds. Traditional Chakli Sacha is made up of brass.

Week 03-04 | FD PG Common Exercises
Factory Process: The exercise is an attempt to design an object which can hold the magazine. The object should consider the usability such that the person can stand in front of it and see and browse through the magazine. The legs of the magazine stand are made in wood and the magazine rests on perforated metal sheet.

Week 05 | FD PG Module 01
Developing the Argument Brief: The fusion of interior elements creates seamlessness in the entire space. Fusion can happen at floor level, ceiling level, and with the vertical element or can form a display unit. Fusion of elements can be achieved through modularity with the play of solids and voids which is derived from different permutations and combinations of modules. Fusion when exaggerated at the volumetric level can form organic interior spaces. It can create density and porosity within the space. Smaller volumes are created within a large volume by using modularity to reflect and amplify structure.

Ideating Roles of an Interior Designer
Week 06-07 | FD PG Module 02
Ideating Role 1 of Interior Designer Brief: The present office building of ATMA, Ahmedabad is a modern monument and a landmark in architectural history and respecting the history associated with it & the work of Ar. Le, Corbusier, design process crucially begun with keeping in mind not causing any hindrance or damage to the surfaces and structure of the site. But also, intervening with the structural elements of the site to make interiors look like a part of it, i.e. building around the existing columns, vertical façade fins, and the open staircases at the mezzanine. Using the site to it’s potential and introducing volumes that can create multiple exhibition spaces in the same space, and sometimes the same element that is a display, when changes its volume could also form a seating or a ceiling element. To balance the rough stone and concrete that runs throughout the site, wood is introduced which adds a contrast and also retains the rawness of the site.

Week 08-10 | FD PG Module 02
Ideating Role 2 of Interior Designer Brief: In creating a series of voids and carved out spaces in the exhibition, visitors fully experience the structure as it moves through space and envelops the different programs. When one passes by the corridor alongside the site, gets a glimpse of the exhibition space inside as the modules expose the interiors through pockets of openings. Volumes are inserted into the double-height space to break the larger volume and to reflect and amplify the seemingly endless structure. The structure rests upon grey terrazzo flooring and occasionally rises to form wooden displays, on top of which Da Vinci’s machines are displayed. To create a contrast to the grey flooring that complements the existing façade designed by the architect, wood and brass finish metal bars are introduced to create contrast in the space. The modules intervene towards the peripheral glass façade, where the modules form smaller corners for visitors to sit and appreciate the exterior view from the floor.
