Industry Advancement Committee Update

Simone Gallo APSAA Board Member & IAC member, National Manager Student Accommodation, Australian Catholic University

The Industry Advancement Committee (IAC) has remained in place this year to contribute to the broader conversation about the current and future issues faced by the student accommodation industry as we move into this recovery phase. Susan Helyar showed excellent leadership ability as the Chair of this committee by creating a workplan for the committee which outlined several goals, along with a strategy to achieve each one. Susan sadly left the industry and APSAA earlier this year, but the committee will continue this work.

APSAA through the IAC will remain focussed on strengthening advocacy on the operational and strategic issues facing students’ accommodation services, with a significant focus on the quality agenda, and factors influencing student access and satisfaction. This can be achieved by updating APSAA Industry Guidelines, and through targeted professional development. We will also seek out opportunities to participate in government submissions and roundtable discussions on issues such as changes to Residential Tenancies legislation, housing affordability, student incomes and other regulatory issues. There is also a push to create stronger dialogue and partnerships with affiliated associations on issues critical to our industry. In this way we may strengthen our voice, build relationships, and create opportunities for collaboration. As a member of APSAA, you can be supported by bringing an issue to the committee. We can scan our committee and Board members to assist you. Also, if you have created a relationship in your state which might be of benefit to more members and assist to move any of these initiatives forward, please reach out to manager@ apsaa.com.au to send a message to the committee or to join.
