EU newsflash On Wednesday 13 September 2017, European Commission President JeanClaude Juncker delivered his annual speech on the State of the European Union, in which he discussed his priorities for the year ahead and outlined his vision for how the European Union should evolve. President Juncker's speech in the European Parliament was accompanied by the adoption of concrete initiatives by the European Commission on trade, investment screening, cybersecurity, industry, data and democracy, putting words immediately into action.

Spotlight on the digital single market This week the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, in cooperation with the President of the European Council and with the European Commission, is organising the Tallinn Digital Summit.

The summit will be a platform to launch high-level discussions on further plans for digital innovation with the aim of keeping Europe ahead of the technological curve while becoming a global digital leader in the years to come. Summit discussions will consider a longer timeframe (up to 2025) and be focused on the essential topics of building a digital future for Europe: trust, security, e-government, industry, society and the economy.

To provide more background information on this important discussion, the Publications Office presents a selection of recent titles on the digital single market and a digital future for Europe.

The digital transformation of government will benefit citizens and businesses, save administrations money and create a new marketplace for public service applications.

This edition of the research*eu results pack magazine contains an overview of EU-funded projects that have helped to overcome obstacles and provide the building blocks (such as eDelivery, eID, eInvoicing, eSignature, eTranslation) for administrations to deliver new digital services across departments and across borders.

A digital single market in Europe Bringing down barriers to unlock online opportunities The EU single market offers European citizens and businesses significant freedoms and rights to travel, trade or operate across the EU. These freedoms in turn mean that innovations reach the widest possible audience and citizens have the widest possible range of choices and opportunities. But today, an increasing number of products and services are going digital or online. This is why we need to create a digital single market in Europe; it is one of the 10 priorities of the European Commission. A digital single market means fewer barriers and more opportunities. It means a seamless area where people and businesses can trade, innovate and interact legally, safely, securely and at an affordable cost, making their lives easier. This publication provides a brief and accessible introduction to this policy.

ICT for work: Digital skills in the workplace Final report The digitisation of the economy is one of the most important drivers behind the profound transformation of the labour market and the way people work, which is likely to become even more significant in the years to come.

This new paradigm represents a major set of challenges for employers, workers and public authorities, and these challenges need to be fully understood in order to identify the most appropriate policy options to transform them into opportunities for all. This study examines the transformation of jobs in the digital economy in the European Union, investigating the penetration of digital technologies into workplaces, the digital skills required by employers and the digital skills currently available in workplaces. Larger than elephants Inputs for an EU strategic approach to wildlife conservation in Africa This booklet contains an overview of the principal threats to wildlife (including animals and plants) in sub-Saharan Africa. It also outlines the most appropriate responses.

This includes interventions to tackle both broad wildlife conservation needs and specifically the growing problem of illegal wildlife trade (including ivory, rhino horn, endemic species, bush meat and rare timbers). Special attention is also given to improving the livelihood of rural populations in the vicinity of wildlife areas.

Interpreting and translating for Europe Languages in the European institutions The European institutions started with four languages in 1958 and now work in 24 official and working languages plus, in some cases, a number of regional languages from different Member States and other languages (Russian, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, etc.). As a democratic organisation, the EU has to communicate with its citizens in their own language. The same goes for national governments and civil services, businesses and other organisations. That is why the EU employs many linguists.

This publication presents the linguistic departments of all EU institutions and explains how to become an EU translator or interpreter.
