A key barrier to early years apprenticeships is that many of them require time off-site for training and lessons; some settings are unable to support this as it can clash with room schedules and interfere with staff ratios.

Our Early Years Educator Level 3 apprenticeship is taught online with all lessons conducted over Zoom. As part of our recent curriculum changes, we have shortened the lesson and course duration to allow your apprentice more time on the job, make our teaching more efficient and ensure your apprentice maximises time on-the-job.

WHY IS IT SO HARD TO MEET LEVEL 3 STAFF RATIOS?

Page 02 | Early Years Newsletter: September 2022

Level 3 ratio shortages are a problem plaguing early years settings across the country.

Low staff retention rates in settings and an industry wide lack of level 3 qualified staff are the main contributing reasons why many settings are struggling to meet the required staff to child ratios. Apprenticeships are a great way to tackle this with government funding to train level 3 qualified staff

We want to give our thanks to the employers who supported our tutor team to enhance and improve our early years curriculums

The quality of skills learnt is just as important as gaining the qualification, as it can mean the difference between someone lasting for 6 months or staying long term.

We have used insight from specialists in various setting types to optimise our Early Years Educator Level 3 curriculum; it has been updated to equip your staff with relevant skills and knowledge in line with the latest industry trends. This insight has crafted a curriculum that will prepare level 3 practitioners to last in the long term.

We could not have developed such a comprehensive curriculum for our early years courses without your support, so thank you!

NCFE IS REVIEWING THE EARLY YEARS EDUCATOR LEVEL 3 QUALIFICATION!

Page 06 | Early Years Newsletter: September 2022

NCFE, the Northern Council for Further Education, has been tasked with reviewing the qualification using research and feedback from parents, practitioners and training providers They are reviewing the qualification to flag where childcare professionals can be trained to a higher level to deliver better care to children.

Last October the Department for Education announced they will be reviewing the Level 3 Early Years Educator qualification to optimise it following the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on early years children.

The suggestions and findings from the review will be published in Autumn 2022, so keep an eye out for updates.

The level 3 qualification was last reviewed in 2014 so this review will update the curriculum in line with the latest developments in early years education. Once the changes to the qualification have been confirmed, we will review our Early Years Educator Level 3 course curriculum and update it according to the changes to the qualification.
