e privilège que Franck Prazan m’a accordé, en me confiant la rédaction de la préface du catalogue accompagnant cette exposition consacrée à Gérard Schneider, m’honore

d’autant plus que ce projet revêt un aspect émotionnel fort au regard des liens qui unissent cet artiste, figure majeure de l’abstraction d’aprèsguerre, à l’histoire d’Applicat-Prazan.

Cette histoire vient de loin. Bernard Prazan, collectionneur et amateur d’art moderne, fondateur de la galerie, consacra d’intenses années à la promotion des peintres de la Seconde École de Paris. Par un travail assidu, sélectif et de conviction, il a montré des artistes qui, par la qualité et l’importance historique de leur travail, méritaient d’être mis sur le devant de la scène.

Bernard Prazan tenait en très haute estime l’œuvre de Gérard Schneider. Il le rencontrera à plusieurs reprises – aux côtés de son épouse, Loïs, et de leur fille, Laurence – et entretiendra avec lui un dialogue fécond. Franck Prazan, son fils aîné, qui racheta la galerie en 2004, hérita de son admiration pour ce peintre romantique, dont l’œuvre, magistrale, appartient désormais à l’histoire de l’art du xxe siècle.

Ce lien avéré et solide avec Gérard Schneider fut marqué par trois expositions monographiques : en 1990 d’abord, à l’ancienne adresse de la galerie, rue Guénégaud ; en 1993, à la galerie de la rue de Seine ; et, enfin, lors de la FIAC de 2006, au Grand Palais, pour célébrer le cent dixième anniversaire de la naissance du peintre.

Aujourd’hui, cette quatrième exposition personnelle, voulue et pensée par Franck Prazan pendant des années, veut remettre pleinement en lumière la

production de Gérard Schneider. Elle est le fruit du désir de la galerie de réitérer l’expression de sa plus grande estime et de son affection envers cet artiste éminent, qui a offert au monde ce qui était au plus profond de son âme.

L’œuvre de Gérard Schneider a été montrée et diffusée à travers le monde avec force, par le biais de grandes expositions, et il est surprenant que la France ne lui ait pas encore rendu l’hommage qu’il aurait sans doute mérité.

Vous ne trouverez pas ici d’explication à cet état de fait, mais il serait par ailleurs indélicat de ne pas le souligner.

Sur les cimaises de notre stand à Art Basel Paris, au Grand Palais, et dans nos galeries, se déploiera une sélection de dix-neuf peintures : elles nous guideront de l’avant-guerre, moment riche en expérimentations et qui marque l’abandon définitif de toute figure, aux années 1950 et au début de la décennie suivante, période de la maturité où s’affirme une abstraction « lyrique », pour culminer enfin au cœur des années 1960, quand le geste s’impose sur la forme et que la couleur devient un élément plastique à part entière.

Une fois encore, il s’agit d’un témoignage de la fidélité et de la passion avec lesquelles, de père en fils, Applicat-Prazan a toujours cru, avec détermination, en l’œuvre de cet artiste qui bouleversa l’abstraction dans la peinture européenne.

feel especially honoured to have been granted the privilege of writing the catalogue preface for this exhibition of Gérard Schneider’s work by Franck Prazan because of the strong emotional aspect of

this project, given the connection between the artist, a major figure of post-war abstraction, and the history of Applicat-Prazan.

That connection goes back a long way. The modern art-lover and collector Bernard Prazan, who founded the gallery, spent years intensively promoting painters of the Second School of Paris. Labouring assiduously, selectively and with conviction, he showed artists who deserved, in terms of the calibre and historical importance of their work, to be placed centre stage.

Bernard Prazan held Gérard Schneider’s work in very high esteem. He met him, his wife Loïs and their daughter Laurence several times and maintained a fruitful dialogue with the painter. Franck Prazan, Bernard Prazan’s eldest son, who bought the gallery in 2004, inherited his father’s admiration for this romantic painter, whose masterly oeuvre is henceforward part of the history of twentieth-century art.

This strong relationship with Gérard Schneider was demonstrated by three monographic exhibitions: the first in 1990, at the gallery’s former address in the rue Guénégaud; the second in 1993, at the gallery in the rue de Seine; and the last, celebrating the 110th anniversary of the painter’s birth, at the 2006 edition of FIAC, in the Grand Palais.

This fourth solo exhibition, which Franck Prazan has been thinking about and planning for years, is intended to put Gérard Schneider’s oeuvre fully back in the spotlight. It springs from the gallery’s desire to reiterate its highest

esteem and affection for this eminent artist, who gave the contents of his inner soul to the world.

Gérard Schneider’s work has been widely shown and disseminated worldwide via major exhibitions, and it is surprising that France has not yet paid him the tribute that was probably his due. You will find no explanation of this state of affairs in these pages, but not to draw attention to it would be to add insult to injury.

A selection of nineteen paintings will be displayed on our stand at Art Basel Paris, in the Grand Palais, and in our galleries. They take us from the pre-war period – a richly experimental period during which Schneider was to abandon figuration once and for all – to the 1950s and the beginning of the ensuing decade – his mature phase, in which a “lyrical” form of abstraction asserted itself – and end in the mid-1960s, when gesture came to take precedence over form and colour became a fully-fledged plastic element in his work.

Once again, this is testimony to the loyalty and fervour with which, under both father and son, Applicat-Prazan has always determinedly believed in the work of this artist, who revolutionized abstraction in European painting.

Heureux qui comme Gérard Schneider a toujours su rester fidèle à lui-même. Son histoire est une aventure élégamment authentique, intense, vécue sur la pointe des pieds et à cœur ouvert. Imperturbable et avisé, à l’écoute du monde, en suivant sa route, seul parmi les autres, Schneider affirma sa singularité. Souverain son amour pour la peinture, tumultueuse sa fougue de créer ; il en fit sa raison de vivre.

sur la toile. Dans son univers pictural, alors, la magnificence et l’humilité, la splendeur et l’obscurité cohabitent et se combattent.

Pourvu d’une immense vitalité, habillé avec goût, fier mais courtois, il pouvait parfois se montrer d’un caractère sanguin et tempétueux. Réticent à parler de sa vie privée – tous les écrits qui lui sont consacrés sont relativement pauvres en éléments biographiques –, il se tenait loin des mondanités, et, quand le succès frappa à sa porte, il resta à l’écart des projecteurs. Il laissa parler son œuvre. Dans le bruissement du monde, rien ne lui convenait mieux que le silence de son atelier.

Sa vie fut longue et féconde. Il traversa tous les mouvements artistiques, de l’impressionnisme jusqu’au pop art, et il en tira sans cesse des enseignements, pour alimenter sa réflexion. Car Gérard Schneider, né à Sainte-Croix, en Suisse, en 1896, et décédé à Paris en 1986, a embrassé le xxe siècle. Il s’est aussi d’ailleurs confronté à ses drames. Son parcours sera marqué par les deux guerres mondiales, et, comment ne pas deviner, derrière les amples coups de brosse noirs qui se manifestent sur les toiles des années 1950, les échos des deux plus grands conflits de tous les temps ? Le tragique, par conséquent, sera toujours présent dans son œuvre, mais restera bien contenu par la forme. Schneider ne montre pas l’affliction, il recourt à la force créatrice. Son lyrisme recèle de la gaieté.

Les débuts de Gérard Schneider s’enracinent dans une figuration qui s’inscrit directement dans la filiation de Cézanne. Mais, dès le mitan des années 1930, ses « Figures imaginaires », des silhouettes sinueuses en mouvement, portent déjà l’impulsion qui animera sa peinture : les aplats chromatiques tendent à devenir des éléments plastiques autonomes.

Il fait ses études à Paris, à l’École nationale des arts décoratifs d’abord, puis à l’École nationale des beaux-arts, dans l’atelier de Fernand Cormon. Il se nourrit des maîtres classiques, de la Renaissance et du romantisme. Il regarde le Tintoret, le Greco, il admire Courbet ou Delacroix. Schneider étudie, observe et garde en mémoire. Cet immense héritage

dirigera sa main et l’accompagnera tout au long de son évolution. Les pionniers de son siècle, fauvistes, cubistes, suprématistes, et de grandes figures telles que Kandinsky, Klee, Mondrian, Malevitch, Picasso ou Matisse, formeront aussi son regard.

De toutes les avant-gardes historiques, c’est le surréalisme, qu’il rencontre en 1937, qui le séduira le plus. Schneider est charmé par les notions de rêve, d’inconscient, par l’idée d’une vision tournée vers l’intérieur. Le processus de l’écriture

automatique l’enthousiasme également. De fait, l’approche et les valeurs du surréalisme – lequel fut contemporain du développement de la psychanalyse et de la découverte de l’inconscient – attirent et influencent maints peintres, notamment ceux qui feront partie de l’expressionnisme abstrait en Amérique du Nord. Des artistes issus de cultures et de contextes différents, confrontés aux mêmes influences, vont

finalement donner naissance à des œuvres très proches, quoi qu’en ait dit la critique, qui chercha le plus souvent à les opposer.

Gérard Schneider fréquente donc le milieu surréaliste, tout en restant indépendant, avant de commencer, dès la fin des années 1930, à « abstractiser » les formes. Ses toiles, graduellement, s’affranchissent du sujet, et, malgré quelques appréhensions – de celles qui assaillent l’homme qui franchit un stade supérieur –, il se dirige résolument vers la nonfiguration. Il se concentre sur la forme, et le noir assume alors une fonction structurante.

Les titres de ses œuvres acteront ce refus de la représentation du réel. À partir du milieu des années 1940, elles seront intitulées « Composition » ou « Opus » – en référence à la musique, qui, pour Schneider, constituait l’essence même de l’abstraction.

Au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, tout est à recommencer, et rien ne redeviendra comme avant. Paris – où Gérard Schneider s’est installé dès les années 1920 – veut retrouver sa place de capitale mondiale de l’art, et la scène artistique est en effervescence. Les artistes se rencontrent, des revues et des salons sont fondés, les expérimentations se multiplient, chacun ressent un besoin pressant de tout bouleverser. Sur les ruines de la guerre va naître l’abstraction lyrique – et gestuelle ; Schneider en sera l’un des pionniers.

Loin des abstractions géométriques, loin des peintres dits « de tradition française » qui ont encore le regard tourné vers la représentation de la nature, des artistes rentrés d’exil, avec leur lot de souffrances, viennent frapper les esprits. Jean Fautrier, avec ses « Otages », et Wols, avec ses toiles torturées faites de griffures et de taches, foudroient le public. Le mouvement Cobra, qui prône une peinture violente, est une autre réponse aux traumatismes de la guerre. Atlan, Mathieu, Hartung, Soulages expérimentent eux aussi. Chacun affirme sa singularité, tous concourent à redessiner les frontières de l’art non figuratif et creusent le sillon d’une abstraction nouvelle.

Gérard Schneider pousse quant à lui l’expérimentation plus loin. Une fois abandonnée toute référence au réel, la porte est grande ouverte pour l’imaginaire et les émotions. Le geste, porteur de sens, leur donnera une voix. Il faut chercher à l’intérieur de soi, « fuir l’idée, fuir le contrôle, fuir le raisonnement », dit le peintre. Rapide et vigoureux, le geste, dans un mouvement intense, s’impose et crée la forme. Au plus profond de l’intériorité,

dans l’univers de l’invisible, les combinaisons sont infinies. Schneider, face à la toile, dégagé de toute emprise extérieure, se libère réellement. La matière semble glisser sur la toile, le geste s’éloigne de tout impressionnisme et devient parfaitement signifiant. À Paris, dans le tumulte de cet immédiat après-guerre, de jeunes galeristes femmes audacieuses ouvrent une brèche dans le milieu artistique. Elles s’appellent Denise René, Colette Allendy, Lydia Conti. C’est cette dernière qui, en 1947, offre à Gérard Schneider sa première exposition personnelle. Il rencontre le succès sur la scène parisienne, et y tisse un dense réseau. Il obtient la nationalité française en 1948, et décroche un contrat chez Lydia Conti qui lui permet de se consacrer pleinement à la peinture.

Le succès dépasse vite les frontières de la France. En 1948 et 1949, Gérard Schneider participe, avec, entre autres, Pierre Soulages et Hans Hartung, à une grande exposition itinérante organisée à travers sept villes allemandes. C’est l’une des premières fois, après des années de dictature et de censure, que l’art moderne est montré outre-Rhin, et il en est le fer de lance. De la Biennale de Venise (en 1948 et 1954) à celle de São Paulo (en 1951 et 1953), en passant par la Documenta de Cassel (en 1955 et 1959), sa réception sera sans conteste internationale. À la charnière des années 1940 et 1950, sa production voyage aux États-Unis, grâce à des personnalités comme Betty Parsons, en 1949, ou Louis Carré ; ce dernier, en 1950, inclut le peintre dans l’exposition Advancing French Art, qui fera le tour de prestigieux musées américains. Les œuvres présentées annoncent celles des futures artistes phares de l’École de New York.

Mais le grand promoteur de Gérard Schneider outre-Atlantique reste le collectionneur et marchand Samuel M. Kootz, fervent soutien des avant-gardes d’après-guerre, rencontré en 1955. Il accompagnera l’artiste, alors au sommet de son succès, jusqu’au début de la décennie suivante. C’est dans la galerie de Kootz, à New York, que ses premières toiles « lyriques » seront montrées.

Les années 1950 seront également marquées par la rencontre du peintre avec le Japon, où son travail résonne avec l’art de la calligraphie : deux expositions monographiques lui seront consacrées, en 1959, à Tokyo, où il reçoit le prix du Gouverneur, et en 1960 à Osaka.

Dans le climat de transformation des années 1960, entre nouveau réalisme en France et pop art en Amérique, et au moment où la scène new-yorkaise monte en puissance, ­Schneider garde fermement le cap. Son abstraction lyrique s’empare d’une nouvelle vitalité. Il s’agit d’années heureuses, où son œuvre est « lumineuse » – Michel Ragon

L’œuvre de Gérard Schneider continue à voyager à travers le monde. On le retrouve à la Biennale de São Paulo en 1961 ; le palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles et le Kunstverein de Düsseldorf lui consacrent une rétrospective en 1962. Il participe encore à la Biennale de

Venise en 1966, et à la Biennale de Tokyo, en 1965 et 1967 ; toujours en 1967, il prend part au Salon de mai, à Cuba. Il figure dans l’exposition Painting in France 1900-1967, qui fera, en 1968, le tour des musées d’Amérique du Nord. L’Italie sera aussi l’une de ses terres d’élection, notamment grâce à sa rencontre avec le galeriste Bruno Lorenzelli, qui le représentera à la suite de Samuel M. Kootz, ouvrant un autre beau chapitre dans la vie du peintre. Homme érudit et collectionneur passionné, Lorenzelli lui offre un contrat exclusif, et s’occupera de sa carrière pendant dix ans. Il montrera son travail à travers la Péninsule. Point culminant de cette réception italienne, en 1970, la Galleria civica d’Arte moderna e contemporanea, à Turin, organise une grande rétrospective de ses œuvres. Le dramaturge et écrivain Eugène Ionesco, devenu ami du peintre, signe le texte du catalogue.

Toute son œuvre peut être lue comme un journal intime dans lequel il raconte, dans un langage universel, les émotions du monde intérieur.

Dès la fin des années 1960 et jusqu’aux années 1970, Gérard Schneider alterne la véhémence et la modération, la fougue et le calme. L’acrylique devient son médium de prédilection, et il retrouve dans le papier, déjà fréquenté par le passé, un

nouvel allié. Ce support lui permet une certaine vitesse d’exécution, tout en ménageant la possibilité d’une retenue et d’une mesure. Il est le lieu d’un épanouissement, celui d’une grammaire formelle inédite, tout en équilibre et en grâce, mais qui ne récuse en rien la force, la vigueur et l’intensité du geste.

Gérard Schneider a soixante-dix-neuf ans en 1975 lorsqu’il reçoit le Grand Prix national des arts. Récompense tardive, et somme toute bien en deçà de son apport réel à l’art en France au cours de la seconde moitié du xxe siècle ! Et ce n’est qu’en 1983 que son pays natal le célèbre avec une rétrospective, au musée d’Art et d’Histoire de Neuchâtel. La France, sa patrie de cœur, lui réserve pour sa part un peu moins d’honneurs. Pourtant, dans les dernières années de sa vie, alors que l’art abstrait est quelque peu délaissé par les institutions, son amour de peindre est toujours aussi vif et profond. Il poursuit fidèlement sa quête sur l’abstraction. « L’art abstrait remplit toutes les conditions qu’exige l’œuvre d’art lorsque celui qui la pratique est un artiste véritable », dit-il. Oui, Schneider était dans la vérité.

Toute son œuvre peut être lue comme un journal intime dans lequel il raconte, dans un langage universel, les émotions du monde intérieur, cet infini trésor de la vie de l’âme, que chacun porte en soi. Voilà pourquoi sa peinture est avant tout une peinture d’espoir.

Gérard Schneider s’éteint en 1986, à l’âge de quatre-vingt-dix ans. Sa belle aventure se termine, l’abstraction lyrique est pleinement entrée dans l’histoire de l’art du xxe siècle, et il en est l’incarnation. À ce long et riche cheminement, Applicat-Prazan est heureuse de pouvoir contribuer.

depths, tenaciously pursuing an infinity, he developed an intensely human body of work in a tragic emotional register. He was a literary man who wrote poetry, and

his acute sensitivity came through both in his poems and when he committed himself to canvas. In his pictorial world, magnificence and humility, splendour and darkness co-exist and battle with each other.

Possessed of immense vitality, elegantly dressed, proud but courteous, he could sometimes be hot-tempered and tempestuous. He was reluctant to speak about his private life – all the writings about him contain few biographical details – he shunned society. When success came knocking on his door, he avoided the limelight, allowing his work to speak for itself. Amid the hum of the world, nothing suited him better than the silence of his studio.

He had a long, prolific career, living through all the artistic movements from Impressionism to Pop Art and constantly nurturing his thinking with the lessons he drew from them. Gérard Schneider, who was born in Sainte-Croix, in Switzerland, in 1896, and died in Paris in 1986, spanned the twentieth century and was confronted by its tragedies.

The two world wars left their mark on his career. One cannot help but glimpse echoes of the two greatest conflicts of all time in the broad black brush-strokes that appear in his paintings from the 1950s. Tragedy was a constant presence in his work, but it was always reined in by form. Schneider did not express suffering: he turned to the creative force. There is gaiety in his lyricism.

Gérard Schneider’s beginnings were rooted in a figurative art that traced a direct line of descent from Cézanne, but in the mid-1930s, his “imaginary figures” – sinuous moving silhouettes – already display the momentum that enlivened his painting: flat blocks of colour tend to become artistic components in their own right.

Schneider studied in Paris, first at the École nationale des arts décoratifs, then at the École nationale des beaux-arts, in Fernand Cormon’s studio. He learned from the Classical, Renaissance and Romantic masters. He looked at Tintoretto and El Greco and admired Courbet and Delacroix, studying and observing them and committing

them to memory. This vast inheritance was to guide his hand and accompany him throughout his development. The pioneers of his century – Fauvists, Cubists and Suprematists – and great figures such as Kandinsky, Klee, Mondrian, Malevitch, Picasso and Matisse also shaped the way he saw.

Of all the historical avant-gardes, it was Surrealism, which he encountered in 1937, that most attracted him. He was charmed by the notions of dreams and the subconscious – by the idea of looking inside oneself. He was also enthused by the process of automatic writing. De facto, the approach and values of Surrealism – which developed simultaneously with psychoanalysis and the discovery of the subconscious – attracted and influenced many painters, in particular those who were to take part in Abstract Expressionism in North America. Whatever the critics may have said – and they were chiefly interested in finding differences – confronted with the same influences, artists from differing cultures and contexts ultimately produced very similar bodies of work.

independence, before moving towards more abstract forms as of the late 1930s. Step by step, his pictures freed themselves from the subject, and despite a few apprehensions of the kind that assail someone who is moving onto a higher stage, he turned resolutely towards non-figurative art. His work now concentrated on form, and black began to play a structuring role. The titles of his artworks reflected this refusal to depict reality. From the mid-1940s, they were entitled “Composition” or “Opus” – in reference to music, which Schneider saw as the very essence of abstraction.

At the end of the Second World War, everything had to be begun again, and nothing was to be the same as before. Paris, where Gérard Schneider had settled in the 1920s, was endeavouring to reassert itself as the world capital of art, and its art scene was in a ferment, with artists meeting, new journals and salons being set up, experiments galore, and an overwhelming, universally shared desire to shake things up comprehensively.

Lyrical – and gestural – abstraction emerged from the ruins of war, and Schneider was to be one of its pioneers.

Artists returning from exile with their burden of sufferings grabbed people’s attention.

Their work was a far cry from geometrical forms of abstraction or painters in the so-called “French tradition” who continued to focus on depicting nature. Jean Fautrier, with his “Hostages”, and Wols, with his tortured pictures composed of blotches and scratches, had a devastating impact on the public. The Cobra movement, which argued for violence in painting, was another response to the traumas of war. Atlan, Mathieu, Hartung and Soulages were also experimenting. Each artist asserted their uniqueness, but all of them were redrawing the boundaries of non-figurative art and exploring a new kind of abstraction.

Gérard Schneider took experimentation still further. Abandoning all reference to reality throws open the door to feelings and the imagination, given voice by meaningful gesture. You have to search inside yourself, to “flee the idea, flee control, flee reasoning”,

as Schneider put it. Swift, vigorous gesture asserts itself in a frenetic movement and creates form. In the innermost self, in the unseen world, the combinations are endless.

As he contemplates the canvas, freed from all external constraints, Schneider is truly liberated. The paint seems to glide over the canvas; the gesture distances itself from any kind of Impressionism, attaining perfect meaning.

In Paris, in the tumult of the immediate post-war years, daring young female galleryowners such as Denise René, Colette Allendy and Lydia Conti broke their way into the art world. It was Conti who offered Gérard Schneider his first solo exhibition, in 1947. He was fêted by the Paris art scene and developed a close-knit network of connections. In 1948, he was granted French nationality and obtained a contract with Lydia Conti that allowed him to devote himelf entirely to painting.

He was soon being successful outside France. In 1948 and 1949, along with other artists including Pierre Soulages and Hans Hartung, he took part in a big travelling exhibition that was shown in seven German cities. This was one of the first occasions on which modern art had been on public view in Germany since the years of Nazi censorship, and Schneider was at the forefront. The Venice Biennale (in 1948 and 1954), the São Paulo Biennale (in 1951 and 1953) and Documenta, in Kassel (in 1955 and 1959), indisputably confirmed that there was an international audience for his work. As the 1940s ended and the 1950s began, his work travelled to the USA thanks to the efforts of figures such as Betty Parsons, in 1949, and Louis Carré, who included him in the 1950 exhibition “Advancing French Art”, which toured prestigious American museums. The artworks in it heralded those of the artists who were to become the leading figures of the New York School.

But Gérard Schneider’s great transatlantic promoter remains the collector and dealer Samuel M. Kootz, an ardent supporter of the post-war avant-gardes, whom Schneider met in 1955. Kootz was to accompany the artist, whose success was then at its height, until the beginning of the next decade, and it was in Kootz’s New York gallery that Schneider’s first “lyrical” pictures were shown.

Another significant aspect of the 1950s was the artist’s encounter with Japan, where people found echoes of the art of calligraphy in his paintings. Two monographic exhibitions of his work were held there, one in Tokyo, where he received the

In the prevailing ambience of change of the 1960s, between New Realism in France and Pop Art in America, and at a time when the New York art scene was gaining in importance, Schneider held to his course. His lyrical abstraction took on a new vitality. These were happy years, when his work was “luminous” – Michel Ragon was to refer to the painter’s “light years” in several of his writings. Schneider’s painting used lighter colours, becoming stronger as a result. Colour, form and gesture combined in a perfect symbiosis – an essential feature of his work that produced artworks of great power.

Gérard Schneider’s oeuvre continued to travel the world. He featured in the São Paulo Bien­nale in 1961; and the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and the Kunstverein of Düsseldorf

mounted a retrospective of his work in 1962. He also had work in the Venice Biennale in 1966, in the Tokyo Biennale in 1965 and 1967, and the Salón de Mayo in Cuba in 1967. He featured in the exhibition “Painting in France 1900–1967”, which toured North American museums in 1968. Italy was also to be one of his chosen stamping-grounds, especially from the time of his meeting with the gallery-owner Bruno Lorenzelli, who succeeded Samuel M. Kootz as his representative, opening another fine chapter of the painter’s life. Lorenzelli, an erudite, passionate collector, offered Schneider an exclusive contract and watched over his career for ten years, showing his work all over the Italian peninsula. The high point of Schneider’s reception in Italy was in 1970, when the Galleria civica d’Arte moderna e contemporanea in Turin held a big retrospective of his paintings. The catalogue text was written by the playwright Eugène Ionesco, who had become friends with Schneider.

From the late 1960s to the 1970s, Gérard Schneider alternated between vehemence and moderation, passion and calm. Acrylic paint became his preferred medium, and paper, which he had used in the past, became a new ally, allowing him to produce artworks relatively quickly while reconciling HIS OEUVRE AS A WHOLE speed with the possibility of restraint and measuredness. It was the locus of a fulfilment, a brand-new formal grammar CAN BE READ AS A DIARY that was all poise and grace but in no way rejected forceful, IN WHICH HE RECOUNTS vigorous, intense gesture.

THE EMOTIONS OF THE INNER WORLD.

Gérard Schneider was seventy-nine when he received the Grand Prix national des arts in 1975 – a belated distinction that, when all is summed up, scarcely reflected his real contribution to art in France in the second half of the twentieth century.

It was only in 1983 that his native country held a retrospective celebrating his career, at the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire de Neuchâtel. France, his emotional homeland, conferred somewhat fewer honours on him. Yet in the last years of his life, when abstract art was somewhat neglected by the art establishment, his love of painting was as strong and deep as ever. He steadfastly pursued his exploration of abstraction, saying that “Abstract art fulfils all the conditions required of an artwork when the exponent is a true artist.”

Yes, Schneider was a man of truth.

His oeuvre as a whole can be read as a diary in which he recounts the emotions of the inner world – the infinite treasury of the life of the soul that each of us carries within us – in a universal language. That is why his painting is primarily one of hope.

Gérard Schneider died in 1986 at the age of ninety. His great adventure was over: lyrical abstraction, of which he was the embodiment, had become an integral part of the history of twentieth-century art.

omment parler de Gérard Schneider ?

Son œuvre est peint en premier lieu, mais il est aussi constitué de mots, d’idées, de concepts, de musique et de poésie. Un œuvre-univers que l’on peut aborder de mille manières, que l’on peut ressentir de mille façons, tant il est ouvert et accueille en lui les infinies possibilités du monde qui nous entoure. Le violent et le sublime, de même que l’invisible et le visible se côtoient dans une harmonie mystérieusement atteinte.

Comment parler de Gérard Schneider ? L’analyse, le commentaire, l’explication demeurent nécessairement partiels et subjectifs. Son œuvre nous place devant des infinis et des inaccessibles, car il porte en lui cette capacité à incarner ce qui ne peut être totalement explicité. Son œuvre dépasse les mots, et il ne reste qu’à suggérer des « possibles ».

et qui veut absolument éclater. Delacroix nous fait alors mieux comprendre le sens de toute création. Pour le peintre, il y a un moment de grande inquiétude, quand il n’ose pas commencer, quand il a peur d’être en dessous de ce qu’il veut. Mais dès qu’il a surmonté son appréhension, et qu’il peint, il ne peut plus rien prévoir, il sent simplement qu’un accord s’établit entre lui et le monde – s’il le calculait, il fausserait tout.

C’est un acheminement. Une note de couleur en appelle une autre, qui n’est pas un complément technique, mais expressif, une couleur qui n’est pas raisonnée, ni consciente, ni pourtant hasardeuse. Et l’œuvre ainsi progressivement s’élabore, monte, force pour mieux traduire l’impulsion qu’elle reçoit.

Quelque chose va naître, l’expression cherche à se définir : on est pris, captivé par ce qui va se passer sur la toile. En fait, la toile nous possède mieux que nous la possédons. […] C’est un corps-à-corps, comme quelqu’un qui vous résiste et qu’il faut dominer, et cela n’est possible que dans un mouvement passionné. Voilà le romantisme : je réalise ce que je suis au moyen de ce qui s’accomplit sur la toile. Peindre est une manifestation totale.

Pour ne pas dénaturer sa pensée et sa façon d’être, nous laisserons Schneider prendre la parole à travers quelques extraits1. À la fois humble et enflammé, exigeant et bienveillant, il nous apparaît ainsi avec ses contradictions apparentes, qui sont en fait l’expression simultanée de différents points de vue antinomiques – à l’image de la réalité du monde qui nous entoure.

À propos de Delacroix Ce qu’il nous reste du romantisme, c’est ce besoin d’éprouver à l’extrême une forme d’expression, d’être possédé par le rayonnement, la présence de sa propre création. Tout m’émerveille. Delacroix, c’est comme un paysage déjà rencontré : on aime retrouver chez un peintre du passé une parenté d’esprit, une saveur de matière qui nous est familière, une franchise à s’émouvoir soi-même pour mieux émouvoir les autres.

Je ne raisonne pas, pas plus qu’avec Tintoret ou Rubens, je suis touché. Les rapports sonores, le bleu froid, la fulgurance des jaunes et des rouges, la spontanéité dans la réalisation, le psychisme dont l’œuvre est chargée, manifestent l’humanité du peintre dans sa tentative de dépassement constant pour crier assez fort ce qu’il porte en lui.

Mais l’homme Delacroix apparaît plus encore dans les esquisses lorsqu’un frémissement, un saisissement de la main montre que l’accord est trouvé. Toute la nature est là, tumultueuse

Si l’histoire de l’art est un enchaînement de filiations, d’influences, de remises en cause, de ruptures et de révolutions, alors le parcours de Gérard Schneider est exemplaire. Schneider participe pleinement de cette histoire et s’intègre volontairement et consciemment dans ce vaste ensemble que constitue l’Histoire. Au contact des maîtres du passé, il trouve sa place, se positionne avec conviction et détermination – cette vision très précise de ses héritages, ses affirmations tranchées lui confèrent une lucidité peu commune, une lucidité et un franc-parler que peu d’artistes ont finalement pu assumer avec autant de force.

C’est par un long et méticuleux apprentissage que Gérard Schneider entre en peinture. De l’École nationale des arts décoratifs aux Beaux-Arts de Paris, il engrange un savoir-faire classique. Comme il est coutume à cette époque pour les étudiants en art, c’est par la copie des maîtres que se forge la connaissance de la technique, de la couleur, de la composition. Il découvre avec émerveillement Titien, le Tintoret, Rubens ou Watteau, et, bien sûr, Delacroix,

pour ne citer que les plus importants. Des années plus tard, il écrira à de nombreuses reprises sur ces figures fondatrices, et il reviendra – sous forme de notes ou d’articles – sur le rôle déterminant qu’elles ont joué dans l’élaboration de sa propre conception de la peinture. Mais, très tôt, son intérêt va aussi se porter sur des artistes plus modernes, dont le rôle novateur – voire révolutionnaire – s’impose à lui : Paul Cézanne, Wassily Kandinsky2, Kazimir Malevitch. La peinture de Cézanne est pour Schneider un aboutissement de la couleur et annonce avec vigueur les premières abstractions. L’Aixois pose la question de la forme comme personne avant lui. Schneider mettra souvent en évidence la révolution lancée par son prédécesseur : avec lui, forme et couleur peuvent désormais incarner autre chose que la « simple » retranscription d’une réalité. Quant à la découverte de Kandinsky, elle marque peut-être pour Schneider l’un des moments les plus décisifs de son parcours artistique : il existe un autre chemin, une autre manière de représenter le monde et ses émotions, au-delà de la reproduction prétendument objective du réel. L’abstraction devient une sorte de voie royale, qu’il conviendra à tout prix de rejoindre – une voie aux possibilités infinies.

concret et visible, mais, surtout, les liens invisibles, notre inconscient et les jeux complexes qui constituent en définitive la totalité du monde tel qu’il est.

Dans la seconde moitié des années 1930, il sera logiquement séduit par le mouvement surréaliste. Ce qui attire Gérard Schneider vers le surréalisme est cet esprit de rupture, de remise en question permanente, plus que son esthétique même. Au contact des surréalistes, il va trouver les clés qui lui permettront de rapidement désapprendre la peinture classique. C’est aussi dans le surréalisme qu’il va saisir deux concepts fondateurs, le premier étant celui de « geste libre », un geste libéré des apprentissages et des carcans de la convenance et de la norme. Tout au long de sa vie, Schneider va prôner une libération totale du geste.

L’autre idée qui le séduira est celle de l’inconscient, très importante pour les surréalistes. C’est un concept fort, qui retiendra son attention : il va lui permettre d’adosser le geste de peindre à une manifestation inconsciente, et non à un acte de pleine pensée et maîtrisé. C’est également à cette période qu’il commence à écrire des poèmes ; sur les conseils d’Eugène Ionesco, il en publiera un recueil en 1974.

Toujours à cette époque, il rencontre, entre autres, Luis Fernández, Victor Brauner, Óscar Domínguez, Paul Éluard et Georges Hugnet ; or, malgré le vif intérêt qu’il porte au mouvement surréaliste, il n’en fera pas partie. En effet, son chemin lui semble « autre ».

Les peintures de Schneider de la seconde moitié des années 1930 sont bien d’influence surréaliste, mais l’artiste se sent encore dans un processus d’apprentissage et de recherche, et cette direction ne peut être considérée comme un aboutissement – tout au mieux, une piste prometteuse…

L’abstraction devient une sorte de voie royale, qu’il conviendra à tout prix de rejoindre – une voie aux possibilités infinies.

Au cours des années 1920 et 1930, Gérard Schneider ne se consacre pas encore pleinement à la peinture.

Son temps est partagé entre, d’une part, une activité de peintre-décorateur et de restaurateur de tableaux, et, d’autre part, sa pratique personnelle. À cette époque, il noue également des relations dans les cercles intellectuels parisiens ; il croise régulièrement peintres, écrivains, essayistes, poètes et musiciens. Il faut noter ici que la fréquentation du milieu musical est déterminante pour Schneider. C’est à ce moment-là que se fait jour chez lui la proximité entre musique et abstraction. En effet, dans cette perpétuelle soif de connaissance, il va découvrir le rapport direct qui existe entre ces deux domaines. À l’écoute des œuvres, entre autres, de Claude Debussy, Francis Poulenc ou Erik Satie, il va concevoir et commencer à formuler la nécessité de se détacher de la représentation du monde tangible pour mieux retranscrire la complexité de notre réalité – à la fois son aspect

À la fin des années 1930 et au début des années 1940, Gérard Schneider va se plonger dans l’étude de plusieurs théories mystiques et philosophiques – aux frontières de la science, de la religion et de l’esthétique.

Il passera plusieurs années à lire, écrire et suivre divers enseignements, pour finalement mettre un terme à ce cheminement spirituel de façon abrupte. Ce qui l’avait fait hésiter à se rapprocher pleinement du surréalisme est aussi ce qui sonne la fin de cette période de recherches théoriques : le dogme, l’appartenance à une école, à une pensée, ou, plus simplement, à un groupe partageant une idée commune, sont vécus par Schneider comme une sorte d’enfermement – ou, du moins, comme une limitation entravant sa liberté d’agir, de penser et de créer.

Il poursuivra sa voie, seul, avec la peinture pour unique objectif. Non pas qu’il formule ainsi cette prise de

conscience, mais il se retrouve devant une évidence.

Face à la richesse des enseignements suivis, des rencontres passées, des possibilités entraperçues, il n’est qu’une seule chose à faire désormais : peindre, et, en quelque sorte, « mettre en pratique » tout ce qui est resté jusqu’à présent latent.

mes travaux, déjà si variés, étaient reconnus comme absolument personnels. Dans mon évolution, sortant d’une peinture d’inspiration naturaliste, j’avais eu le besoin d’explorer rapidement toutes les formes et les expressions qui se présentaient à mon imagination, car je sentais ce vaste champ libre et nouveau.

Et c’est ainsi qu’après de courtes périodes de transpositions, j’abordais, vers 1937, par mes premières créations imaginatives directes dont je garde quelques exemplaires, « l’abstrait ». C’est au Salon des surindépendants de 1936, 1937 et 1938, que l’on a vu mon évolution, et, dès la fin de la guerre, au Salon de 1945, mes envois, dont une toile romantique et semi-gestuelle de 1 m 46 × 1 m 20, furent très remarqués.

La revue Vrille avait édité une petite plaquette, me citant à cette occasion : « Les nouvelles possibilités de la peinture abstraite s’orientent vers un contenu expressif et dramatique dans la création des formes. » Un critique du journal

– Les débuts

Je m’étais peu manifesté avant la guerre, ce retard relatif était dû à des obligations de responsabilités matérielles ; la fin de cette période a coïncidé avec l’engagement proposé, début 1947, par Mme Lydia Conti qui ouvrait une galerie destinée à l’art abstrait. C’est alors qu’il me fut permis de me consacrer entièrement à l’élaboration de mes travaux dans cet art.

Ce moment marquait une maturité et une mise au point de mes théories que confirmaient mes œuvres, et que consacraient la critique et les connaisseurs. Les différents caractères de

Arts, à l’occasion d’une exposition intitulée Peintures abstraites, à la galerie Denise René, en février 1946, a repris cette phrase en annonçant : « C’est le renoncement à l’aventure de Mondrian. » Ma première exposition à la galerie Lydia Conti en avril 1947 montrait deux recherches parallèles, l’une lyrique et gestuelle (Opus 316, reproduit sur la couverture du catalogue de l’exposition), l’autre, d’une conception alors inédite, destinée aux réalisations murales par la suppression complète de la dualité formefond, que j’avais baptisée « les formes juxtaposées », caractérisée par la suppression de l’espace entre les formes. Un de ces tableaux fut reproduit dans un compte rendu de mon exposition par le critique Léon Degand, qui, séduit par cette conception, en a beaucoup parlé avec des peintres de son entourage. J’ai rapidement abandonné cette voie, dans laquelle d’autres sont venus s’engager, pour me consacrer uniquement au développement de mes recherches gestuelles, que je n’avais à aucun moment laissées, et qui correspondaient à mon besoin de totale liberté.

Georges Mathieu, Jean Piaubert, Serge Poliakoff, Marie Raymond, Day Schnabel, Pierre Soulages, Wols, sont autant de noms, d’univers singuliers et de personnalités fortes qui vont alors croiser régulièrement la route de Gérard Schneider. Tous ces artistes se côtoient, exposent ensemble ou non, sont défendus par certains critiques, et mis au ban par d’autres…

Qu’importe ! C’est le foisonnement, cette constellation complexe et vibrante qui fait émerger le sens.

GÉRARD SCHNEIDER

Au sortir de la guerre, en 1945, tout est à reconstruire.

Une reconstruction matérielle, économique, sociétale, mais aussi morale, s’impose. Le désastre humain, spirituel, est immense, et les artistes vont jouer un rôle crucial dans ce renouveau. La subite éclosion des galeries présentant de « nouveaux » artistes, proposant de nouvelles perspectives esthétiques, est motivée par cette nécessité impérieuse de rebâtir, de sortir de l’abîme d’horreurs, et d’insuffler du sens là où il semblait avoir disparu.

Gérard Schneider se consacre désormais pleinement à la peinture, et ses œuvres sont exposées régulièrement dans les galeries parisiennes de Lydia Conti3, Denise René4, Colette Allendy5, et à la galerie de Beaune6. Il participe aussi aux grandes expositions collectives organisées à l’étranger par le gouvernement français. Il faut noter trois expositions importantes à cette époque. La première est celle orchestrée par Betty Parsons dans sa galerie de New York7 – c’est la première fois que les œuvres de Schneider sont visibles aux États-Unis.

C’est ensuite – entre 1948 et 1949 – que l’exposition Wanderausstellung französischer abstrakter Malerei est présentée dans sept grandes villes d’Allemagne de l’Ouest8. Cet événement majeur, mis en œuvre par Ottomar Domnick, constitue le premier acte du rapprochement franco-allemand – bien avant sa

Une écriture réinventée se fait jour, et, des compositions de Schneider se dégage une énergie neuve, une liberté absolue. À l’image des confluences – ces jonctions de cours d’eau –, les artistes, mouvements et critiques vont se croiser, se rencontrer et constituer le Paris d’aprèsguerre. Hans Arp, Jean-Michel Atlan, Victor Brauner, Jean Dewasne, Jean Deyrolle, César Domela, Hans Hartung, André Lanskoy, Marcelle Loubchansky,

formalisation politique. Outre-Rhin, il rencontre un vif succès auprès des artistes et des intellectuels, tout juste sortis de l’obscurité de la dictature et du chaos de la guerre. Une œuvre de Pierre Soulages est choisie pour illustrer l’affiche de l’exposition, et c’est une œuvre de Gérard Schneider, Opus 374, qui illustre la couverture du catalogue. Enfin, en 1950, Advancing French Art est présentée à la galerie Louis Carré, à New York9. Elle circulera par la suite en 19511952 dans cinq grands musées aux États-Unis10. C’est à cette occasion que le public américain découvre véritablement la peinture de Schneider.

En avril 1956 a lieu la première exposition personnelle de Gérard Schneider à la Kootz Gallery, à New York 12. C’est un tournant pour l’artiste, et, plus largement, pour l’art abstrait français. Samuel M. Kootz expose également Georges Mathieu, Jean Dubuffet et Pierre Soulages. Dans une lettre adressée à Schneider, datée du 25 mars 1957, le galeriste américain écrivait : « Je pense qu’avec vous et Pierre [Soulages] j’ai les deux hommes de ce temps en lesquels je suis le plus confiant13. » Samuel M. Kootz organise cinq expositions personnelles de Schneider entre 1956 et 1961, ainsi que des expositions de groupe dans lesquelles les peintres

Tout au long des années 1940, Gérard Schneider s’attache à explorer les interactions possibles entre la forme, la couleur et le geste. Peu à peu, les formes se font moins rigides et semblent se confondre au sein de la composition elle-même. Le trait quant à lui se libère, et les travaux sur papier de cette époque montrent combien cette nouvelle liberté pousse l’artiste vers l’abandon de la forme architecturée au profit d’un geste toujours plus audacieux. L’année 1950 marque un tournant dans sa peinture ; son langage pictural change, un geste calligraphique, noir, vif, fait son apparition sur les toiles. La composition finit par structurer un ensemble de signes et d’éléments d’un vocabulaire inédit. Une écriture réinventée se fait jour, et, des compositions de Schneider se dégagent une énergie neuve, une liberté absolue – empreintes de cette fougue qui caractérise à merveille ce que l’on nomme à présent l’« abstraction lyrique ». Même si sous ce vocable les critiques d’art ont regroupé de nombreux artistes aux parcours différents, et aux approches esthétiques parfois très éloignées, il convient de dire que, finalement, peu de ces artistes ont répondu aux « critères » de cette abstraction lyrique. C’est aussi pourquoi, en 1998, Michel Ragon déclarait : « L’abstraction lyrique s’est surtout incarnée dans Gérard Schneider, comme le cubisme dans Picasso11. »

– Le gestuel

J’ai éprouvé que, dans une improvisation pure de toute préoccupation, le geste réalisait une plus grande richesse en diversité d’invention que toute conception cérébrale.

français sont présentés aux côtés d’artistes américains. Le public new-yorkais, tout comme les artistes et les critiques d’art, découvrent des œuvres lyriques, gestuelles, puissantes. C’est un choc esthétique pour beaucoup, et les expositions sont couronnées de succès : de nombreuses œuvres intègrent de prestigieuses collections, privées et muséales. Pour

faire de nombreux tableaux de grand format, j’avais l’impression non seulement d’avoir pu me réaliser, mais aussi d’avoir apporté une contribution à l’art abstrait, qui a compté dans la pleine réalisation des possibilités de cette voie en tant que peinture à la fois expressive et monumentale. La peinture de plusieurs des grands artistes américains s’étant orientée dans un sens stylistique plus proche à partir de 1955, confirme la valeur et l’intérêt de cette expression14. »

Les calligraphes contemporains japonais voient dans l’œuvre de Schneider un pont tangible entre Orient et Occident.

Même si l’on a voulu chercher – et prouver – l’influence de tel artiste sur l’abstraction gestuelle américaine – l’Abstract Expressionism –, il faut, avec le recul, se rendre à l’évidence : on ne peut raisonnablement mettre en avant un artiste en particulier.

Tous ont été influencés par leurs rencontres, leurs amitiés, les découvertes rendues possibles par ces galeristes novateurs qui ont « donné à voir » et permis ces échanges. Il ne faut pas non plus oublier que nombre d’artistes américains ont séjourné à Paris, et, pour remonter quelques années plus tôt, que la présence des surréalistes à New York joua un rôle de premier plan dans l’évolution de l’art abstrait américain – citons en particulier l’influence qu’ils exercèrent sur Roberto Matta, puis Arshile Gorky, et, bien sûr, Willem De Kooning. Ces quelques noms s’intègrent dans un vaste et complexe réseau de vies, de parcours, d’œuvres, qui constitue l’histoire de l’art et de ses acteurs. Or il serait vain de vouloir en délimiter parfaitement les contours, car cela résiste, par définition, à une description exhaustive, analytique et définitive.

Gérard Schneider, il s’agit d’un moment extrêmement stimulant, et la fin des années 1950 lui offre des années très productives. Voici ce qu’il déclare à Gérard Xuriguera, en 1984, lorsqu’il revient sur cette période : « Une participation (trois grandes toiles) à la Biennale de Venise en 1954, et surtout un contrat avec la Kootz Gallery de New York en 1955, ont confirmé cet intérêt. Avec le recul, la rencontre avec Sam Kootz me semble un des faits les plus importants de la décennie 1950-1960, car, avec une exposition annuelle à New York, et surtout, la nécessité de

Au début des années 1960, le monde change radicalement – politiquement, socialement, intellectuellement –, et le milieu de l’art à son tour subit de profonds bouleversements. Paris voit peu à peu son rôle central lui échapper au profit de New York. En 1964, après des décennies de domination de l’École de Paris, Robert Rauschenberg remporte le Grand Prix de peinture à la Biennale de Venise. C’est un coup de tonnerre dans le ciel de l’art français, en particulier pour les institutions, qui ne sauront pas réagir, et perdront ainsi beaucoup de crédibilité et d’influence sur la scène internationale.

Pour sa part, Gérard Schneider ne veut pas participer à ce débat et continue sa patiente et méticuleuse recherche. Il explore plus que jamais la dimension de la couleur– conçue dès à présent comme une dimension à part entière –, et toutes les combinaisons possibles entre le geste et la couleur. Tout au long des années 1960 et jusqu’au début des années 1970, il sera soutenu par le galeriste

de nos états psychiques, qui inspirent la réalisation technique et expressive de l’œuvre.

Dans ce processus, c’est le geste qui crée la forme. Le geste contient tout de notre nature, il en est une partie inhérente, psychique, physique, mentale, affective. Il s’exprime ici comme la main qui écrit, ou comme celle qui touche le piano, avec la différence que, dans ces derniers cas, l’expression se fait à travers des données (mots, partition). Déjà, dans un livre de sagesse tibétaine, ces paroles admirables : « Et au-dessus de la Pensée, il y a le Seigneur du Geste, car le geste réunit le corps et l’esprit. » GÉRARD SCHNEIDER

La réception de Gérard Schneider au Japon permet de comprendre combien les notions de « geste » et de « peinture gestuelle » sont fondamentales dans la compréhension de son œuvre. Par le biais du Salon de mai, Schneider va avoir la possibilité d’y montrer ses œuvres dès 195116. Grâce à ces expositions du Salon (une sélection d’œuvres exposées à Paris est ensuite envoyée au Japon l’année suivante), à sa participation aux Biennales de Tokyo, aux expositions organisées par le gouvernement français et à plusieurs expositions personnelles, ce ne sont pas moins d’une cinquantaine d’événements qui permettent au public japonais de découvrir sa peinture. L’impact de Schneider dans l’Archipel comporte plusieurs aspects. Au contact de son travail, les critiques d’art ne manquent pas de relever un étonnant effet de miroir entre les calligraphies orientales et l’abstraction occidentale. Quantité d’articles parus au Japon mettent en lumière ces correspondances surprenantes. Au même titre que les critiques d’art, les calligraphes contemporains japonais voient dans l’œuvre de Schneider un pont tangible entre Orient et Occident. Ils sont quelques-uns à correspondre avec le peintre, par l’intermédiaire de journalistes et de critiques installés à Paris. Ces échanges se concrétisent de façon très pragmatique : Schneider reçoit régulièrement papier, pinceaux et encres pour la calligraphie – matériel à cette époque assez difficile à trouver en France. C’est ainsi que, tout au long des années 1950, l’artiste va produire de nombreuses œuvres sur papier parfaitement assimilables, au premier abord, à de la calligraphie, mais qui se révé­leront de formidables recherches – au-delà de l’abstraction – sur la signification du geste et sur sa capacité à incarner à lui seul le sens. Et, bien sûr, ce

milanais Bruno Lorenzelli. Ce dernier lui fera bénéficier de plusieurs expositions personnelles à ­Bergame puis à Milan, et lui permettra de produire – à nouveau – énormément de grandes et puissantes toiles. Le point culminant de la relation entre les deux hommes sera la rétrospective organisée à la Galleria civica d’Arte moderna e contemporanea, à Turin, en 197015.

– L’abstrait

L’abstrait, « sujet intérieur », est par ses apports dans l’art moderne une prise de conscience nouvelle quant à sa conception et sa plastique.

travail sur le papier trouvera rapidement son pendant sur la toile. Surtout vers la fin des années 1950, ce geste vif, noir, emporté et puissant nous apparaît comme particulièrement présent – il n’est pourtant « que » le résultat d’un long travail visant à donner corps au geste. À partir de ce moment – et jusqu’à la fin de sa vie –, son geste, plaqué sur la toile ou sur le papier, gardera cette force et cette aura.

Ma main prend la brosse qu’elle trempe dans une couleur, ce premier geste appelle un complément, un thème apparaît, et l’œuvre s’élabore ainsi dans une création absolument libre de tout contrôle conceptuel, jusqu’à son terme expressif et formel. Tout cela dans un travail rapide, sous la pression de l’exaltation de l’inspiration. […] Qu’il s’agisse d’une grande toile ou d’une petite gouache, le processus de création est identique. J’improvise en réalisant, dégagé de toute indication du caractère à donner à l’œuvre.

Cette permanence du geste chez Gérard Schneider se vérifie également dans ses propres archives.

Comme beaucoup d’artistes, il conservait de nombreuses images d’œuvres d’art. Dans des pochettes, parmi des reproductions d’œuvres de primitifs italiens, de Watteau, de Rubens, de Delacroix, de Kandinsky, de Cézanne et de Klee, on retrouve une quantité importante de reproductions de travaux de calligraphes japonais contemporains, découpées dans des revues comme Bokubi ou Bokuzin.

De ce détachement apparent à une totale improvisation, c’est ici que se joue l’acte de peindre chez Gérard Schneider. C’est à ce moment précis – entre volonté et renoncement – que l’œuvre se crée. Il est difficile de faire la part exacte des choses. On ne peut savoir si le geste est pleinement libre, autonome, ou si, malgré tout, un contrôle s’exerce sur le pinceau.

Il ne nous appartient pas de donner une réponse, mais nous constatons simplement que c’est dans ce fragile équilibre que réside toute la force créatrice de Schneider. Au regard de son long apprentissage, on peut être tenté de penser que tout est parfaitement maîtrisé, anticipé – que tous les éléments de la composition sont à une place prédéterminée, que tout est architecturé et mis en scène avec rigueur. Apparemment, il n’en est rien ; Schneider semble vouloir s’effacer derrière le geste de peindre lui-même, comme s’il renonçait à garder la main sur le processus de création, comme si une force extérieure à lui-même agissait à sa place. Ce point de bascule insaisissable est peut-être le résultat de cette longue pratique tellement empreinte de maîtrise – cette extraordinaire faculté à désapprendre pour ne laisser s’exprimer que l’acte de peindre lui-même, seulement le geste –, comme un accord parfait qui ne souffre en définitive

– La calligraphie

La critique et les calligraphes japonais ont très bien ressenti que ma peinture cherche à atteindre cet au-delà qui est la résonance intérieure, et qu’elle contient cette convergence de deux complémentaires, « le cosmos » et l’expression personnelle, tout comme la calligraphie traditionnelle.

Mais ils ont remarqué aussi que ma peinture est plus complexe que la calligraphie orientale, d’une conception enrichie par la diversité de mes formes et des couleurs.

En 1954, Yoshikawa, dans un interview avec S. Morita, fondateur de la revue japonaise Bokubi, dédiée à la calligraphie, a dit : « […] En Extrême-Orient, la notion “espacenéant” est très forte. Le néant, en vérité, c’est “l’être”. Tout en étant de la peinture abstraite, la peinture à l’huile (de Schneider) comme matériau donne une impression de puissance et de vie. Une espèce de réalité concrète. Ce n’est pas comme la flamme

aucune approximation, aucune hésitation. Au fil du temps et des créations, cette harmonie parfaite se fait de plus en plus présente, de plus en plus perceptible pour le spectateur. Il y a, dans les œuvres tardives de Schneider, la maîtrise de la forme, de la couleur et du geste – réunis dans des compositions desquelles émane une sorte d’évidence, de compréhension immédiate.

apports, dont les critères de jugement sont souvent idéologiques – or, une idée, une idéologie, ne suffit pas pour faire une œuvre d’art, celle-ci existe par ce mystère de la qualité, quel que soit le sujet, le style, ou l’époque. Elle est valable par cela dans tous les temps et le connaisseur la retrouve toujours. Les connaisseurs, devant une œuvre, jugent, et diront : c’est bon, ou c’est très bon, c’est mauvais, ou très mauvais – c’est tout ; il n’y a rien à ajouter, qu’une analyse technique, dans ce cadre. Or, ce n’est pas l’idée nouvelle qui compte pour que l’œuvre passe valablement les siècles (bien que les grands artistes apportent aussi des idées nouvelles) mais seulement et toujours la qualité. Que restera-t-il des cent idées actuelles ? Ce ne sera pas l’idée qui restera, mais le véritable artiste par sa grande qualité seule ; quel que soit le genre. La qualité est indépendante du genre, du style, et elle est comprise, ressentie dans l’ensemble-temps, lorsque l’idée, l’idéologie, a cessé d’intéresser. La qualité reste et « tient » dans tous les temps.

À la fin de sa vie, dans les années 1980, Gérard Schnei­ der réalise de nombreuses œuvres sur papier de grand format (150 × 150 cm et 100 × 150 cm). Dans ces ultimes compositions colorées et gestuelles, cette synthèse s’opère avec force et clarté. Une émotion pure, directement accessible au regard et détachée de tout cadre interprétatif, surgit : une abstraction autonome, à mesure d’homme, qui puisse enfin toucher l’âme, bienveillante.

De la forme au « signe » calligraphié, de la figuration à une peinture gestuelle libérée des enseignements classiques, la sélection présentée par Applicat-Prazan propose une merveilleuse mise en lumière du parcours de Gérard Schneider, de la fin des années 1920 au milieu des années 1960.

Il est tout à fait exceptionnel de voir ainsi réunies des pièces majeures, marquantes et historiques. Si une démonstration doit être faite, elle est ici donnée à voir au spectateur ; au fil des œuvres, l’évolution de Schneider est évidente – ce réel devenant progressivement forme, cette forme lentement emmenée vers un geste plus libre, pour finalement devenir liberté pure, puissante et éruptive. Le travail de l’artiste nous apparaît dans toute son intensité et sa fougue, mais aussi dans son immense et constante rigueur. Il est ici question de vérité et de sincérité. La vérité de l’acte de peindre comme fondement premier de toute création ; l’infinie sincérité du geste qui vient coucher sur la toile le sentiment profond d’atteindre une communion directe avec l’être intérieur. Gérard Schneider décrit, peint, suggère – parfois avec douceur, parfois avec violence – toutes les hésitations, les contradictions et les aspirations de la condition humaine. C’est en cela qu’il a tant touché son public – d’amateurs éclairés ou non – et qu’il continuera à émouvoir.

ow should Gérard Schneider be spoken of? His oeuvre is primarily painted, but it is also made up of words, ideas, concepts, music and poetry. At once oeuvre and universe, it can be approached in a thousand ways and experienced in a thousand ways – so open is it and to such an extent does it harbour within it the infinite possibilities of the world around us. The violent and the sublime, the seen and the unseen mingle in a mysteriously achieved harmony. How should Gérard Schneider be spoken of? Analysis, comment and explanation remain necessarily incomplete and subjective. His oeuvre places us in front of things that are infinite and unattainable, for he bears within him the ability to embody what cannot be made entirely explicit. His oeuvre is beyond words: there is nothing for it but to suggest possibles.

forth. In that moment, Delacroix gives us an insight into the meaning of any creation.

For the painter, there is a moment of great anxiety, when he does not dare begin, when he is afraid of not being up to achieving what he wants. But as soon as he has overcome his apprehension and is painting, he can no longer plan anything: he simply senses that a harmony between him and the world sets in. If he were to calculate it, he would throw everything off kilter.

It is a carrying-along. One note of colour calls forth another, which is not a technical complement but an expressive one, a colour that is not reasoned or conscious, and yet is not random. And so the work of art gradually develops, rises, forces its way through so as to translate the impulse it receives. Something is about to be born; the expression seeks to define itself: we are caught, captivated by what is going to happen on the canvas. In fact, the canvas possesses us more than we possess it. … It is a hand-to-hand struggle, like someone who resists you, whom you have to dominate, and it can only be done in a passionate movement. That is Romanticism: I become what I am through what is accomplished on the canvas. Painting is a total manifestation.

So as not to misrepresent his thought and personal style, I will let Schneider speak for himself via several extracts.1 That way, he is visible to us, at once humble and impassioned, exacting and benevolent, with his apparent contradictions, which are in reality the simultaneous expression of differing, contradictory viewpoints – like the reality of the world around us.

What is left to us of Romanticism is the need to experience a form of expression in the extreme, to be possessed by the radiance, the presence of one’s own creation.

Everything fills me with wonder. Delacroix is like a landscape one has encountered before: in a painter of the past, we like to find a spiritual kinship, an appreciation of materiality that we recognize, a receptiveness to emotion that helps us move others. I do not reason, any more than I do with Tintoretto or Rubens: I am touched. The tonal relationships, the cold blue, the brilliance of the yellows and reds, the spontaneous execution, the psyche in which the artwork is steeped, communicate the painter’s humanity in his endeavour constantly to outdo himself in order to shout loudly enough what he has inside him.

But Delacroix appears still more clearly as a man in the sketches when a quiver, a slight jolt of the hand shows that harmony has been achieved. All nature is there, tumultuous and utterly intent on bursting

If the history of art is a succession of filiations, influences, questionings, breaks and revolutions, then Gérard Schneider’s career exemplifies it. Schneider is fully part of that history and voluntarily and consciously fits into the vast ensemble that makes up history as a whole. Through contact with the old masters, he found his place and positioned himself with conviction and determination: that very accurate perception of his debts to the past and his unequivocal assertions gave him an uncommon lucidity – a lucidity and an outspokenness that few artists have ultimately succeeded in maintaining so staunchly.

Gérard Schneider entered painting via a long, painstaking apprenticeship. He learned traditional skills at the École nationale des arts décoratifs and the Beaux-Arts de Paris. As was customary for art students at the time, knowledge of technique, colour and composition was acquired by copying

the old masters. Schneider’s discovery of Titian, Tintoret to, Rubens, Wat teau and of course Delacroix – to mention only the most important – filled him with awe. Years later, he was often to write about these seminal figures, revisiting the crucial part they played in the development of his own conception of painting in notes and articles. But from very early on, he was also interested in more modern artists – Paul Cézanne, Wassily Kandinsky 2 and Kazimir Malevitch – whose innovative, even revolutionary role was obvious to him. For Schneider, Cézanne’s painting was the ultimate outcome of colour and vigorously heralded the earliest abstractions. Cézanne posed the question of form in a way

oneself from depiction of the material world, the more fully to render the complexity of the reality we live in – not only its concrete, visible aspect, but above all invisible connections, our subconscious and the complex interplay that ultimately makes up the whole of the world as it is.

It followed that, in the second half of the 1930s, he should be attracted by the Surrealist movement. It was the breakaway spirit and constant questioning of Surrealism that appealed to him, rather than its actual aesthetic. Through contact with the Sur­ realists, he was to find the keys that allowed him to unlearn traditional painting in a short space of time. He also took over two of Surrealism’s funda­ mental concepts. The first of these was “free gesture” – a gesture freed from everything one had been taught and the straitjackets of standards and conventions. Throughout his life, Schneider was to advocate total liberation of the gesture. The other idea that appealed to him was the unconscious, which was very important to the Surrealists. His attention was gripped by this powerful concept, which he was able to use as a basis for the notion of the gesture of painting as an unconscious manifestation, not a fully thought-out, controlled act. It was also at this time that he began writing poems: on the advice of Eugène Ionesco, he published a poetry collection in 1974.

Still in this period, he met Luis Fernández, Victor Brauner, Óscar Domínguez, Paul Éluard and Georges Hugnet, among others, but despite his keen interest in the Surrealist movement, he did not join it. It seemed to him that his path lay elsewhere. His paintings from the second half of the 1930s are indeed influenced by Surrealism, but the artist felt that he was still in the midst of a process of learning and exploration, and that that direction could not be viewed as a conclusion – at best, it was a promising lead.

ABSTRACTION BECAME A SORT OF HIGHWAY THAT BECKONED IRRESISTIBLY – A HIGHWAY THAT OFFERED INFINITE POSSIBILITIES. no one before him had done. Schneider was often to remark that his predecessor had started a revolution: from Cézanne onwards, form and colour could embody something other than “mere” retranscription of a reality. As for Schneider’s discovery of Kandinsky, he saw it as marking what was perhaps one of the most decisive moments in his artistic career: there was another path, another way of depicting the world and one’s emotions, beyond supposedly objective reproduction of reality. Abstraction became a sort of highway that beckoned irresistibly – a highway that offered infinite possibilities.

In the 1920s and 1930s, Gérard Schneider was not yet a full-time painter. He divided his time between working as a decorator and picture restorer and producing his own art. At this time, he also formed ties with Parisian intellectual circles, regularly encountering painters, novelists, essayists, poets and musicians. Here, it should be mentioned that his contacts with the world of music had a decisive impact on Schneider. It was now that the relationship between music and abstraction dawned on him. With his perpetual thirst for knowledge, he explored the direct connection between the two fields. Through listening to musical works by composers such as Claude Debussy, Francis Poulenc and Erik Satie, he conceived and began to formulate the necessity of detaching

In the late 1930s and early 1940s, Schneider immersed himself in the study of several mystical and philosophical theories on the borderline of science, religion and aesthetics. He spent several years reading, writing and following various teachings, but in the end abruptly terminated this spiritual journey.

The same thing that had made him hesitate to embrace Surrealism completely impelled him to put an end to this period of theoretical exploration: Schneider felt that dogma, belonging to a school or a mode of thought, or even simply being part of a group with a shared idea was a kind of imprison-

responsabilities. The end of that period coincided with the engagement offered in early 1947 by Madame Lydia Conti, who was opening a gallery for abstract art. I was now able to devote myself entirely to producing works of art in this field. This moment marked a maturity and a development of my theories that were borne out by my paintings and consecrated by critics and connoisseurs. The differing characters of my artworks, which were already very varied, were recognized as being absolutely personal. In my development, emerging from a type of painting inspired by naturalism, I had needed to conduct a rapid exploration of all the forms and expressions that offered themselves to my imagination, sensing that this was a vast, wide-open new field. So after short periods of transpositions, in about 1937, I began to approach “the abstract” via my first directly imaginative creations, of which I have kept a few examples. My development was observed at the 1936, 1937 and 1938 editions of the Salon des Surindépendants, and immediately after the war, at the Salon of 1945, the artworks I sent in, including a romantic, semi-gestural painting measuring 146 cm × 120 cm, attracted much notice. The journal Vrille had published a little brochure quoting what I said on that occasion: “The new possibilities of abstract painting look towards an expressive, dramatic content in the creation of forms.” During an exhibition in Denise René’s gallery in February 1946 entitled “Peintures abstraites”, a critic from the magazine Arts quoted the sentence, announcing: “This is the renunciation of Mondrian’s adventure.” My first exhibition in Lydia Conti’s gallery in April 1947 showed two parallel explorations: one lyrical and gestural (Opus 316, reproduced on the cover of the exhibition catalogue); the other, of a conception that was then entirely new, suited to murals in that it completely did away with the duality between form and content, which I had called “juxtaposed shapes”, in which there was no space between shapes. One of these pictures was reproduced in an account of my exhibition by the critic Léon Degand, who liked this concept and discussed it widely with painters of his acquaintance. I soon

ment or at least a limitation that restricted his freedom of action, thought and creation.

He was to pursue this course, alone, with painting as his sole objective. Not that he worded the realization like that, but he found himself faced with the obvious. Contemplating the riches of what he had learned from teachings, the people he had met, the possibilities he had glimpsed, there was henceforth only one thing to do: paint, and, as it were, put into practice everything that had hitherto remained l­atent.

abandoned this path (although others followed it) to devote myself solely to the development of my explorations of gesture, which I had never left off and which matched my need for total freedom.

exhibition “Wanderausstellung französischer abstrakter Malerei”, which was shown in seven West German cities.8 This major event, organized by Ottomar Domnick, constituted the first gesture of rapprochement between France and Germany – well before formal political rapprochement. In Germany, the exhibition was a great success with artists and intellectuals, who had only just emerged from the dark days of the Nazi dictatorship and the chaos of war. One of Pierre Soulages’ artworks was chosen to illustrate the exhibition poster, and one of Gérard Schneider’s artworks, Opus 374, featured on the front cover of the catalogue. The last was “Advancing French Art”, held at the Louis Carré Gallery in New York in 19509, which was to tour five major American museums in 1951–1952.10 This was the exhibition that really introduced the American public to Schneider’s painting.

GÉRARD SCHNEIDER

After the war, in 1945, everything had to be rebuilt.

France was in need of material, economic, social and moral reconstruction. There was a huge crisis of the human spirit, and artists were to play a crucial role in this renewal. The sudden emergence of galleries showing “new” artists and offering new aesthetic perspectives was motivated by this pressing need to rebuild, to emerge from the abyss of horrors, and to create meaning where it seemed to have disappeared.

Like watercourses at a confluence, artists, movements and critics were to cross paths, meet and come together to form post-war Paris. Hans Arp, JeanMichel Atlan, Victor Brauner, Jean Dewasne, Jean Deyrolle, César Domela, Hans Hartung, André Lanskoy, Marcelle Loubchansky, Georges Mathieu, Jean Piaubert, Serge Poliakoff, Marie Raymond, Day

Throughout the 1940s, Gérard Schneider endeavoured to explore the possible interactions between form, colour and gesture. Gradually, his shapes became less rigid and seemed to blend into the composition itself. Meanwhile, his line became freer, and his artworks on paper from this period show the extent to which this new freedom encouraged the artist to abandon architectural form in favour of ever-bolder gesture. The year 1950 marked a turning-­point in his painting: his pictorial language changed, and a strong black calligraphic gesture made its appearance in his paintings. Eventually, the composition was to structure a set of signs and elements from a new vocabulary. A reinvented style and a brand-new vigour, an absolute freedom – imbued with the energy that wonderfully typified what was now known as “lyrical abstraction” – emanated from Schneider’s compositions. Although art critics have grouped numerous artists with differing trajectories and sometimes widely differing aesthetic approaches under that name, it has to be admitted that ultimately, few of these artists have met the criteria of that lyrical abstraction – hence Michel Ragon’s statement in 1998, that lyrical abstraction was chiefly embodied by Schneider, as Cubism was by Picasso.11

CONTEMPORARY JAPANESE CALLIGRAPHERS SAW A TANGIBLE BRIDGE BETWEEN EAST AND WEST IN SCHNEIDER’S WORK. Schnabel, Pierre Soulages and Wols were among the names, distinctive worlds and strong personalities Gérard Schneider regularly encountered. All these artists mixed with each other, exhibited together or separately, were defended by some critics and banned by others. Never mind! It was from that profusion – that complex, vibrant constellation – that meaning emerged.

Henceforward, Gérard Schneider devoted himself entirely to painting, and his artworks were regularly shown in the Paris galleries of Lydia Conti3, Denise René4, Colette Allendy5, and in the Galerie de Beaune6. He also took part in large group exhibitions mounted by the French government in other countries. Three major exhibitions from this period are worth noting. The first was the one mounted by Betty Parsons in her New York gallery7: this was the first opportunity to see Schneider’s artworks in the USA. Then, in 1948–1949, there was the travelling

execution, I became aware of how intention’s awkward blunderings destroy the instinctive fecundity of inspiration at its source. Free, no longer hampered by any external reference, the creator produces, in abstraction, a field of exploration open to all possibilities, but which has to fulfil the visual, expressive conditions necessary for it to be a work of art.

as group exhibitions in which French painters were shown alongside American artists. The public, artists and art critics of New York encountered powerful lyrical and gestural artworks. For many, it was an aesthetic shock, and the exhibitions were a success: many artworks entered prestigious private and museum collections. For Gérard Schneider, this was an extremely stimulating moment, and the late 1950s offered him highly productive years. Here is what he said to Gérard Xuriguera, in 1984, recalling this period: “Taking part in the Venice Biennale (with three large paintings) in 1954, and above all a contract with the Kootz Gallery in New York in 1955, confirmed this interest. With hindsight, the meeting with Sam Kootz seems to me one of the most important things that happened in the decade of the 1950s because with an annual exhibition on New York, and especially the need to produce numerous large paintings, I had the impression that I had not only been able to fulfil myself but had made a contribution to abstract art that counted in the full realization of the possibilities of that

Gérard Schneider’s first solo exhibition took place in the Kootz Gallery in New York in April 1956 .12 It was a turning-point for the artist and in broader terms for French abstract art. Samuel M. Kootz also showed work by Georges Mathieu, Jean Dubuffet and Pierre Soulages. In a letter to Schneider of 25 March 1957, the American gallery-owner opined that with him and Pierre [Soulages], he had the two men of the time in whom he had the most confidence.13 Samuel M. Kootz held five solo exhibitions of Schneider’s work between 1956 and 1961, as well

avenue as a form of painting that is both expressive and monumental. The fact that the painting of several great American artists took this stylistic direction from 1955 onwards confirms the value and interest of that form of expression.”14

own right – and all the possible combinations of gesture and colour. Throughout the 1960s and into the early 1970s, he was supported by the Milanese gallery-owner Bruno Lorenzelli, who generously held several solo exhibitions of his work, first in Bergamo and then in Milan, and enabled him once again to produce a huge number of large, powerful paintings.

The high point of their relationship was the retrospective held in the Galleria civica d’Arte moderna e contemporanea in Turin in 1970.15

Although there have been attempts to look for – and prove – the influence of such-and-such an artist on American gestural abstraction (known as Abstract Expressionism), with hindsight it has to be recognized that no one artist in particular can reasonably be highlighted. All of them were influenced by the people they met, their friendships, the discoveries made possible by the innovative gallery-owners who showcased and enabled these interactions.

Nor should it be forgotten that many American artists spent time in Paris, and – going back a few years – that the presence of the Surrealists in New York played a leading role in the development of American abstract art – their influence on Roberto

– The abstract

In terms of its contributions to modern art, abstraction or the “inner subject” has resulted in a new awareness of its conception and plasticity. Abstraction is characteristically a completely autonomous creation formulated according to our psychological states, which inspire the technical and expressive production of the work of art. In this process, it is gesture that creates form. Gesture contains the whole of our nature: psychologically, physically, mentally and emotionally, it is an integral part of it. Here, it expresses itself like the hand that writes or strokes the piano, with the difference that, in the latter cases, expression is conveyed via information (words or a score). Already, a book of Tibetan wisdom contained the admirable words: “And above Thought, there is the Lord of Gesture, for gesture reunites the body and the spirit.”

CONTEMPORARY JAPANESE CALLIGRAPHERS SAW A TANGIBLE BRIDGE BETWEEN EAST AND WEST IN SCHNEIDER’S WORK. Matta, then Arshile Gorky and of course Willem De Kooning should be cited in particular. These few names are part of a vast, complex network of lives, careers and works of art that makes up the ­history of art and those who play a part in it. To attempt to delineate its exact contours would be futile because, by definition, it eludes exhaustive, analytical, definitive description.

Gérard Schneider’s reception in Japan enables us to grasp how fundamental the notions of “gesture” and “gestural painting” are to comprehend his oeuvre.

Through the Salon de mai, Schneider was able to show his paintings there from as early as 1951.16 As a result of his exhibiting in the Salon (a selection of the artworks shown in Paris was sent to Japan the following year) and taking part in several editions of the Tokyo Biennale and in the exhibitions held by the French government, and via several solo exhibitions, the Japanese public were able to encounter his painting at no fewer than fifty or so events. There were several aspects to Schneider’s impact in the archipelago of Japan. Art critics who encountered his work invariably commented on the astonishing way that Western abstraction seemed to mirror Oriental calligraphy. Numerous articles published

In the early 1960s, the world changed radically – poli­ tically, socially and intellectually – and the milieu of art in turn underwent profound upheavals. Paris gradually lost its central role to New York. In 1964, after decades of domination by the École de Paris, Robert Rauschenberg won the Grand Prix for painting at the Venice Biennale. It was a clap of thunder in the sky of French art, especially for the art establishment, which did not know how to react and consequently lost much of its credibility and influence on the international scene.

Gérard Schneider, for his part, had no desire to join in the debate and continued his patient, meticulous explorations, going still further into the aspect of colour – which he now saw as a dimension in its

that powerful, strong, forceful, black, angry gesture seems especially present to us – and yet it is “only” the result of a long endeavour to embody gesture.

From that moment on and until the end of his life, his gesture, flattened onto on canvas or on paper, was to hold onto that force and that aura.

The permanency of gesture in Gérard Schneider is borne out by his own archives. Like many artists, he kept a lot of pictures of artworks. There are numerous folders of reproductions of works by contemporary Japanese calligraphers cut out of journals such as Bokubi or Bokuzin, among reproductions of artworks by Italian Primitives and by Watteau, Rubens, Delacroix, Kandinsky, Cézanne and Klee.

NOTE 4

– Calligraphy

Japanese critics and calligraphers have quite rightly sensed that my painting seeks to attain the beyond that is inner resonance, and that it contains the convergence of two complementary things, “the cosmos” and individual expression, just like traditional calligraphy. But they have also noticed that my painting is more complex than Oriental calligraphy and that its conception is enhanced by the variety of my shapes and colours. In 1954, in an interview with S. Morita, the founder of the Japanese calligraphy journal Bokubi, Yoshikawa said: “In the Far East, the notion of ‘nothingness as space’ is very powerful. In truth, nothingness is ‘being’. Although it is abstract, as a material, (Schneider’s) painting in oils gives an impression of power and life. A kind of concrete reality. It is not like the dead flame of Indian ink. It seems to reveal something like the entrails of humankind to us.” S. Morita: “For us, who wish to create lyrical works either through characters (writing) or through abstraction, this is a discovery. But when Schneider does the same work, it is a genuine work of invention.”

in Japan highlight these startling ­correspondences.

And like art critics, contemporary Japanese calligraphers saw a tangible bridge between East and West in Schneider’s work. Some of them corresponded with the painter through journalists and critics based in Paris. These exchanges a took highly pragmatic material form: Schneider regularly received paper, ink brushes and inks for calligraphy, which were quite hard to find in France at that time.

In this way, throughout the 1950s, the artist was to produce numerous artworks on paper which at first glance can be perfectly assimilated with calligraphy, but which subsequently reveal themselves to be astonishing explorations – going beyond abstraction – of the significance of gesture and its capacity to embody meaning on its own. And of course, that work on paper soon found its counterpart on canvas. In particular towards the end of the 1950s,

My hand picks up the brush and dips it in a colour. That first gesture calls for a complementary gesture: a theme appears, and so the artwork develops in a process of creation that is utterly free of all conceptual control, until it reaches its formal, expressive

conclusion. All this, working fast, driven by the elation of inspiration. … Be it a large painting or a little gouache, the process of creation is identical. I improvise as I work, with no indication of what the artwork should be like.

­ nticipated – that all the elements of the composition a are in a predetermined place, that everything is rigorously constructed and staged. Apparently, that is not the case: Schneider seems to want to disappear behind the gesture of painting itself, as if he was giving up control over the process of creation, as if a force outside of him was acting in his stead. This elusive tipping point is perhaps the result of the mastery born of long practice – his extraordinary ability to unlearn so as to allow only the very act of painting, only the gesture, to express itself – like a perfect harmony that ultimately brooks no approximation, no hesitation. In the course of time and creations, this perfect harmony is increasingly present and perceptible for the viewer.

In Schneider’s late works, mastery of form, colour and gesture are united in compositions that radiate a sort of self-evidence, of immediate comprehension.

At the end of his life, in the 1980s, Gérard Schneider produced many large works on paper (150 × 150 cm and 100 × 150 cm). In these last colourful, gestural compositions, this synthesis operates clearly and forcefully.

A pure emotion arises that is directly accessible to the

In Gérard Schneider’s work, it is here, in this detachment akin to total improvisation, that the act of painting is played out. It is at this precise moment – between will and renunciation – that the artwork is created. It is hard to know quite what is going on. We cannot know whether the gesture is completely free and independent or whether control is nonetheless exerted over the paintbrush. It is not our place to give an answer: we simply observe that Schneider’s entire creative force lies in this fragile balance. In the light of his long apprenticeship, we may be tempted to think that everything is perfectly controlled and

gaze and detached from any interpretive framework – an autonomous abstraction on a human scale that can at last touch the soul, benevolently.

and style, and it is understood and felt in timeas-an-ensemble when the idea, the ideology, has ceased to be of interest. Quality remains and “lasts” in all ages.

NOTE 5

– Quality

Quality-as-resonance, the complementary relationship between poetic expression and material technique (content and plasticity).

There is currently a relentless determination to validate abstract art so as to graft new elements onto it, often on the basis of ideological criteria – but an idea, an ideology, is not enough to make something a work of art: a work of art exists by virtue of the mystery of quality, whatever its subject, style or period. That is what makes it valid in every age and the connoisseur always recognizes it. In front of an artwork, connoisseurs make a judgement. They will say, “It’s good”, or “It’s very good”, “It’s bad”, or “very bad”.

That is all: there is nothing to be added but technical analysis. But for the work of art legitimately to survive through the centuries, what counts is not the new idea, only and always quality (although great artists also contribute new ideas). What will remain of the current hundred ideas?

Not the idea, but the true artist, solely on account of their high quality, whatever the genre. Quality is independent of genre

From form to the calligraphic “sign”, from figuration to a gestural painting freed from traditional teachings, the selection presented by the ApplicatPrazan wonderfully illuminates Gérard Schneider’s career from the late 1920s to the mid-1960s. It is quite exceptional to see major, remarkable, historic pieces assembled like this. If a demonstration were needed, here it is, presented to the viewer. From painting to painting, Schneider’s development is self-evident – reality gradually becoming form, then that form slowly moving towards a freer gesture and finally becoming pure, powerful, eruptive freedom. The artist’s work is visible to in all its passionate intensity, but also in its immense, constant rigorousness. It is a matter of truth and sincerity: the truth of the act of painting as the primary foundation of all pictorial creation; the infinite sincerity of the gesture that commits to canvas the profound emotion of direct communion with the inner being. Gérard Schneider describes, paints, suggests – sometimes mildly, sometimes violently – all the hesitations, contradictions and aspirations of the human condition. This is why he touches his public so deeply – whether they are knowledgeable art-lovers or not – and why he will continue to move us.

OPUS 374, 1948 L’année 1948 marque une évolution dans le parcours de Gérard Schneider : à compter de cette période, le geste trouve une place dans ses œuvres sur toile. Jusque-là réservé aux travaux sur papier, il devient l’élément structurant de la composition. Sombre, volontaire, ample, il introduit une vibration dans la juxtaposition des espaces colorés.

Opus 374 est une pièce majeure qui frappe les esprits : elle servira à illustrer la couverture du catalogue de l’exposition collective Wanderausstellung französischer abstrakter Malerei, qui circule dans sept grandes villes allemandes entre 1948 et 1949 (c’est une œuvre de Pierre Soulages qui figure sur l’affiche de l’exposition). À partir de l’été 1949, elle est montrée à Paris, au cinquième Salon de mai, puis à la galerie Colette Allendy ; enfin, en octobre 1949, la Betty Parsons Gallery la présente à New York, en l’incluant dans l’exposition de groupe Painted in 1949: European and American Painters. C’est par le biais de cette œuvre que le public américain découvre Gérard Schneider.

The year 1948 marked a new phase in Gérard Schneider’s development: from then on, gesture featured in his works on canvas. Previously used only in his works on paper, it now structured the composition. Dark, determined and broad, it introduced a vibration into the juxtaposition of coloured spaces. Opus 374 is a striking, major piece: it was used to illustrate the cover of the catalogue of the group exhibition “Wanderausstellung französischer abstrakter Malerei” that toured seven German cities in 1948 and 1949 (an artwork by Pierre Soulages featured on the exhibition poster). As of the summer of 1949, it was shown in Paris, first at the fifth Salon de mai, then in Colette Allendy’s gallery. Lastly, in October 1949, the Betty Parsons Gallery showed it in New York, including it in the group exhibition “Painted in 1949: European and American Painters”. It was through this artwork that the American public discovered Gérard Schneider.

OPUS 95 B, 1955 Réalisé en 1955, Opus 95 B est présenté l’année suivante à New York, dans le cadre de la première exposition personnelle de Gérard Schneider aux États-Unis, à la Kootz Gallery, du 9 avril au 5 mai 1956. Le Museum of Modern Art de New York en fait l’acquisition la même année.

Les puissants coups de brosse esquissent à peine les formes, et la composition, néanmoins manifeste, ne s’architecture plus que par contrastes ; une éblouissante lumière blanche semble structurer les ténèbres. La matière accroche les reflets pour donner vie aux espaces colorés, le tout ponctué par des contrepoints de teintes vives, lesquels créent une impression de véritable profondeur. Œuvre maintes fois reproduite et citée en exemple, elle constitue l’illustration même de la manière dont le geste en peinture va conduire Gérard Schneider vers une abstraction libre – une abstraction libre, mais construite, le geste étant en lui-même, par définition, une construction.

Opus 95 B was painted in 1955 and exhibited in New York the following year, in Gérard Schneider’s first solo exhibition in the USA, at the Kootz Gallery, from 9 April to 5 May 1956. The Museum of Modern Art in New York acquired it in the same year.

The powerful brush-strokes barely sketch in the shapes, and although the composition is clear, its architecture is now defined solely through contrasts: a dazzling white light seems to structure the darkness. Reflections in the paint bring to life the coloured spaces – the whole punctuated by counterpoints in bright hues, creating an impression of genuine depth.

Much reproduced and cited as an example, this artwork is the very illustration of the way gesture in painting was to lead Gérard Schneider towards free abstraction – an abstraction that was free but constructed, gesture being in itself, by definition, a construction.

OPUS 41 D, 1959 Les contrastes de matières, de brillances et de couleurs construisent Opus 41 D avec une fougue renouvelée ; il n’y a plus de formes identifiables, plus aucun signe ni construction, il ne demeure que le geste. Toutefois, Gérard Schneider ne tourne pas le dos à son savoir et à sa maîtrise de la technique picturale. C’est grâce à l’enseignement des maîtres anciens qu’il parvient à cet équilibre fragile entre matière et fluidité, entre densité des noirs – brillants ou mats – et luminosité de ces éclairs jaunes et blancs. Manifestations d’une force supérieure, et comparables au foudre de Zeus, ceux-ci s’imposent à l’œil avec fermeté et tumulte – mais ils indiquent aussi combien ce qui nous est donné à voir dans cette peinture en appelle à des questionnements essentiels. À travers cette œuvre – et d’autres « Opus » de cette période –, le mot « lyrique » prend tout son sens, et le public a compris combien ces pièces d’une étonnante liberté avaient à la fois quelque chose de dramatique et de profondément humain. C’est pour cette raison qu’elles nous touchent avec tant de force et de véhémence.

Opus 41 D is structured with renewed ardour by contrasts of rough and smooth, matt and shiny, and light and dark.

There are no longer any identifiable shapes, signs or constructions: all that is left is gesture. Nevertheless, Gérard Schneider does not turn his back on his knowledge or his mastery of pictorial technique. It is the lessons he has absorbed from the old masters that enable him to achieve this fragile balance between matter and fluidity, between the density of blacks – some shiny, some matt – and the brightness of those yellow and white streaks of lightning.

They are manifestations of a higher force comparable to Zeus’ thunderbolts, which impose themselves on the eye with firmness and clangour – but they also point to how what is set forth in this painting raises issues that are essential.

Through this painting and other works entitled "Opus" from this period, the word “lyrical” took on its full meaning, and the public understood the extent to which these astonishingly free artworks had something simultaneously tragic and profoundly human about them. That is why they affect us with such force and vehemence.

À la fin des années 1950, Gérard Schneider pousse aussi loin que possible l’exploration du geste ; la composition fondée sur la forme tend à disparaître. Néanmoins, une impression d’harmonie et d’équilibre demeure.

Des puissances contraires s’opposent, ce qui semble être chaos n’est en fait que vibration sensible. Dans cette orchestration presque « bruyante », deux notes, l’une jaune, l’autre verte, raccrochent le spectateur à la réalité.

In the late 1950s, Gérard Schneider took exploration of gesture as far as possible, and form-based composition tended to disappear from his work. Nonetheless, an impression of harmony and balance remains.

Conflicting powers oppose each other: what seems to be chaos is in fact only a sensitive vibration. In this almost “noisy” orchestration, two notes, one yellow, the other green, give the viewer a purchase on reality.
