Appleton’s West Coast style owes a debt to role models such as George Washington Smith, Gordon Kaufman, Wallace Neff and Paul It Williams. “These are all architects who were very rich in their reference to architectural history in ways that became, I think, typically California,” he says. Appleton’s current projects include a Santa Barbara equestrian estate and two houses in Carmel Valley.
