HORSE RANCH

san diego county, california

The inspiration for this ranch came not from the usual Spanish or Mediterranean Revival influences common to Southern California, but from the colonial architecture of South America and, more specifically, Argentina’s Estancias. The intention was to create a uniquely rural landscape separate from the surrounding suburban context which in time would capture the experience of an agricultural homestead in the wilderness.

MEADOW FARM

santa barbara, california

Meadow Farm is a 14-acre horse farm, inspired by 18th century English rural farmhouses. We designed the farm within its modern day California setting on a sloping site overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

The farm is a compound of buildings that surround a central entry courtyard. The stables were built first, then the main house, and finally, the other buildings followed. The buildings are oriented towards the gardens, a vineyard, horse paddocks and the Pacific beyond, appreciating the full beauty of the property’s striking grounds and ocean views.

Equestrian Program Notes:

• Designed 8 Stall Stable including Trophy Room

• Designed Equipment & Storage Barn

• Restored Historic Hay Barn

• Restored Original Flat Track

EL RANCHO ESCONDIDO catalina

island, california

El Rancho Escondido is the historic ranch on Catalina Island established by the Wrigley family in the early 1930’s. We are undertaking the complete renovation of the original stables, historic ranch house, and manager’s house, as well as designing new buildings for a winery, visitor’s center, tasting room, and chapel as well as hay and maintenance barns.

The new buildings, including the barns, are designed in weathered salvaged barn wood so as to not compete with the Spanish Colonial Revival architecture of the original buildings.
