Welcome to...

The Big Feast 2019 Can you believe this will be the sixth serving of Stoke-on-Trent’s freshest outdoor arts festival?... Wow! This August Bank Holiday, Stoke-on-Trent becomes the capital of Europe as shows from Spain, Portugal, all over the UK and our own city pop-up on the streets of the City Centre.

And there is truly something for everyone: from the wild Ramshacklicious and the jaw-dropping SMASHED, to the dreamy Cloudscapes and heart-warming Bicycle Boy. We’re excited to be trying new things too with events like The Piccadilly Stage bringing you live music and drop-in dance workshops from daytime into night. Make sure you stay around in the evening too for a line-up of poetry events, cabaret and film screenings.

At Big Feast ‘19 we’re putting more in place to help make the festival accessible to everyone and on the following page you’ll find details of what we’ve done. We would love to hear your feedback after the event so we can keep improving.

Appetite’s aim is to keep getting more people in Stoke-on-Trent to experience and be inspired by the arts. To do this we work in collaboration with the fantastic Appetite Supper Club, a group of local residents who help us shape this very programme.

A big thank you goes to our brilliant Volunteer Team who help make the festival happen and to our supporters: Arts Council England, Stoke-on-Trent City Council, Stoke-on-Trent Business Improvement District (BID) and the Without Walls Touring Network Partnership.

at The Big Feast ‘19 Appetite’s aim is to make The Big Feast accessible to everyone. Here are some of the things we’ve put in place so far to help do this: • There are icons on each event page for guidance to the show • Large print versions of this brochure are available: pick one up from New Vic Theatre; email askus@appetitestoke.co.uk and we’ll post one out or get one on the day from the HQ 3 or a Steward.

• A digital version of this brochure is available at www.issuu.com/appetitestoke • All performances are wheelchair accessible and viewing areas will be reserved for wheelchair users when we’re expecting large numbers • A number of benches and backed seats will be available in performance areas.

• We’ve included a handy map in this brochure which also indicates an accessible route through the town and car parks which are all accessible • On the day Big Feast zone signs and directional signage will help you find your way • There’ll be Stewards throughout the festival including designated Access Stewards available for assistance

This activity is supported by the Without Walls Touring Network Partnership.

• In the back of the brochure we’ve put suggested itineraries including a ‘Chilled Out Big Feast’ to help plan your visit • We have additional access support on individual shows including relaxed / autism-friendly, audio described and BSL interpreted performances. by Joss Arnott Dance Joss Arnott Dance present PULSE!, a brand-new dance and live music experience created for the streets.

Performed entirely around a huge wheel of percussion engineered by Rolls-Royce and designed by Eleanor Bull, this adrenaline-fuelled show is a combination of rhythmical flare and heart-in-mouth choreography suitable for all the family.

Supported by Without Walls and Arts Council England through Project Grants. Commissioned by SIRF, Stockton International Riverside Festival, Greenwich+Docklands International Festival (with funding from the Leche Trust), Salisbury International Arts Festival (part of Wiltshire Creative), Pavilion Dance South West, DanceEast & Déda. Seeing Me

by FRONTLINEdance Stoke-on-Trent’s FRONTLINEdance invite you on a journey of adventure, discovery and emotion.

A brand new, inclusive performance co-created by the local deaf and disabled community, Seeing Me will travel through Tunstall, Burslem, Stoke, Fenton and Longton using public transport whilst being streamed live at The Big Feast at Pilgrims Pit and conclude in a grand finale in the City Centre. Telling the stories and experiences of the local community, Seeing Me’s integrated cast of contemporary dancers will leave you uplifted and enlightened.

Haiku Slam Hosted by Stoke-on-Trent poet Gabriella Gay, eight of the region’s best and bravest poets go headto-head armed only with Haiku.

It’s poetry, talent show and an appreciation of the ancient Japanese Haiku rolled into one fun-filled night!

The Rajasthan Heritage Brass Band Hailing from the iconic city of Jaipur, experience the hypnotic music and dance of the The Rajasthan Heritage Brass Band.

by Gobbledegook Theatre Place on a pair of headphones and lie back in our outdoor auditorium in Bethesda Gardens to experience a soothing duet between performer and sky. Cloudscapes invites you to look up and contemplate the clouds as a storyteller spins tales about the changing sky and life itself. Afterwards make sure to visit the Cloud Museum housed in Gobbledegook’s horse trailer.

Equipped with a wooden board and a cardboard tube, two castaways, stranded on the beach of their imagination meet each other, grow to know each other and maybe get to trust each other.

Using simple, seemingly worthless objects, together they go on a playful, entertaining quest to find balance.

The Band at the End of the World!

by Ramshacklicious Roaming, brass heavy, anarchic, musical mayhem… five musicians arrive dressed in punk marching-band attire, with the intensity of the inevitable end of the world burning through their eyes. From the gentle to the manic, their simple existence, struggle and joy plays out as they roam through the City Centre in a series of beautiful, striking moments and audience interactions. All accompanied by a partly improvised cinematic score played live by the musical ensemble. A humorous and emotional re-mixing of the traditional street band.

Artist Jenny Cashmore has developed a unique colour range of nail polishes just for Stoke-on-Trent through meeting local residents and asking them, “What places are important here and what colour are they?�

Select from the colour range, finishings and accents all inspired by the city.

Come along and get a free Stokie manicure and take away a bit of The Potteries imprinted on your fingernails!

by Entrepreneurs Network Stoke-on-Trent’s Entrepreneurs are teaming up with a collective of street artists to present the first Big Feast Graff Jam! Using the Colours of Stoke colour palette, watch as twelve graffiti artists create Big Feast murals live on the streets outside the bus station and have a go yourself in our drop-in painting sessions.

The Ship’s Buoy

by David Bethell with Sneyd Academy and Forest Worlds Youth Group A pirate ship tried to dock in the City Centre – and it didn’t go well! Climb aboard at The Big Feast and explore the wreckage. The Ship’s Buoy was created for the hilltop in Central Forest Park, Stoke-on-Trent for Urban Wilderness’ Forest Worlds Festival (2019) in collaboration with young people from Sneyd Academy and Forest Worlds Youth Group.

Get ready to belt your heart out as Stoke Sings! takes over The Big Feast ’19 in a mass choir performance celebrating the joy of singing together.

Join in their open workshop on Saturday afternoon and then perform on The Piccadilly Stage.

Brightening up the unexplored nooks and crannies of the city, Our Front Door injects colour and vibrancy into the area and onto disused front doors, through brand new works of street art created by a host of talented local artists.
