MILTON, Ga. — The rain held off Saturday morning as hundreds of residents and community members filled downtown Milton for the annual Crabapple Festival. The event, held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Oct. 2, featured vendors showcasing pottery, candles, locally roasted coffee and handmade jewelry.

Crabapple Road was closed from the roundabout at Heritage Walk to the corner of Birmingham Highway and Broadwell Road.

Live music, football on the big screen, food and family-friendly activities were also part of the mix.

Local group Gray Matters Acoustic played an acoustic session of mostly ’70s rock music during the festival. Food trucks and local restaurants provided a range of offerings – gyro, Southern soul food and other selections.

The festival provided an opportunity for attendees to also purchase homemade items for holiday gifts for their friends and family.

Court convicts three men in 3-year-old burglaries MILTON, Ga. — Three men were convicted of a series of burglaries in federal court Sept. 15. The burglaries in Maryland and Georgia included break-ins at three Milton homes.

Demar Brown, 37, of New Jersey; Jashon Fields, 37, of Atlanta; and Kamar Beckles, 35, of New Jersey were found guilty of conspiracy and transportation of stolen property.

The United States Attorney for the District of Maryland announced the convictions in a statement saying jurors found the men guilty following a 10-day trial in Baltimore.

The series of burglaries occurred

PUBLIC SAFETY between November 2017 and January 2018. The men broke into 21 homes in Milton and Baltimore County, Maryland.

They swiped $850,000 worth of cash, foreign currency, safes, jewelry, designer purses, clothes, electronics, collectibles, rare coins and memorabilia with intentions to fence the stolen items in other states.

Trial attorneys said the men communicated through two-way radios and mobile phones during the burglaries.

Their crime spree came to a halt Jan. 26, 2018 when all three men were arrested near two of the Maryland houses they burglarized.

Investigators seized some of the stolen items, but the vast majority has yet to be recovered, according to federal officials.

The men face up to 15 years in federal prison. No sentencing date has been set.

Milton woman reports fraudulent purchases MILTON, Ga. — A woman went to the Milton Police Department on Sept. 24

and reported identity theft.

The victim said her cell phone, email and bank accounts were compromised and she received notifications for several fraudulent purchases in her name.

The Milton woman’s travails began Sept. 23 when she got multiple text messages from T-Mobile about $3,000 worth of phones and watches on her account that she didn’t order. The phone company flagged the transactions as fraudulent and didn’t authorize them, police said.

Later the same day, the victim received notifications that her email password was changed without her knowledge. According to police, she got alerts soon after about several drones purchased in her name from Cloud City Drones. The devices, which cost several thousand dollars, were shipped to a Jefferson residence.

The victim also got an email alert from Navy Federal that a woman had been added as an authorized user on her bank account, and $14,000 was transferred to a Zelle account.

Crabapple Market contributes $225,000 to Milton High School arts, athletics

Although the school received interest from several national brands, it ultimately decided it made sense to collaborate locally.

The sponsorship package includes naming rights of the main sports field, marketing on the new scoreboard, sponsor nights and signage on all sports fields, gymnasium and stage. It also includes marketing for events and businesses at Crabapple Market.

Auburn University signs pact with Fulton County Schools

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmedia.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Fulton County Schools has entered into a landmark agreement allowing all public high school students access to free or reduced-cost classes through Auburn University.

The first-of-its-kind arrangement will allow the university to establish virtual learning locations in the county to assist in outreach classes, including virtual learning centers at the district’s two innovation academies in Alpharetta and Fairburn.

At its Sept. 30 meeting, the Board of Education heard a report from School Superintendent Mike Looney who described the program as “incredible.”

Looney said the agreement will allow students to take up to 24 hours of college courses through the university without paying out-of-state tuition.

“Board members, I don’t know — and it may exist — but I don’t know of another school system that has partnered with an out-of-state university, particularly one that’s world renowned for STEM, for architectural engineering, for education,” Looney said. “I think this is going to be something for us to be very proud of.”

Under terms of the arrangement,

students receiving free or reduced lunch can apply for classes at no cost. Other students will pay $550 a class.

Alpharetta City Councilman Ben Burnett, who was part of a local team that reached out to the university nearly three years ago, called the agreement historic.

“If I were a student, and I wanted to go to Auburn, and I was on free and reduced lunch, I could essentially transfer in as a junior, having spent no money,” he said. “If you have 12 hours and a 3.0 grade point average, they will unconditionally admit you to the university.”

Burnett said erasing state lines to give young people educational opportunities is the essence of a free-market system.

“If competition works well in the capitalism marketplace, then surely it works well in public education,” he said.

Fulton County School Board member Katie Reeves said the agreement could not have been achieved without cooperative efforts from all parties.

“We are breaking new ground in having a university from another state provide educational offerings to our students in their own cities,” Reeves said.

“This is a concrete, realistic path for our students to go to an esteemed four-year university.”

president for Strategic Initiatives and Communications, said the university has stepped up efforts in recent years to expand opportunities to students who may have felt left out of the traditional path to college.

“We are very focused on access and affordability,” she said. “It is a long-term goal of our institution. This is a program designed to support that in ways that meaningfully impact our students.”

She said the virtual learning arrangement will bring the best resources of the university to Fulton County students.

“We offer a robust staff of people who virtually connect with students, virtually check in with them, engage with them on a regular basis, weekly, daily in some cases, to provide academic coaching, tutoring,” Huff said. “We really try to provide a very exhaustive comprehensive program that engages not only with students but their family as well.”

Introducing the college experience into high school, she said, can help students garner some success, gain confidence and help put them on a path that might have intimidated them before.

Huff said the university will adjust resources if demand grows, but Auburn has a successful virtual classroom program to accommodate Fulton County

students in place. She said she expects high interest among students.

“This is another option for students,” she said. “This is one from an institution they are familiar with. We have a lot of students from Atlanta that want to come to Auburn.”

The district’s Innovation Center in Alpharetta has already paid dividends to the city as a pipeline for technology training. The Auburn announcement only adds to the city’s reputation as an innovator in educational offerings geared toward the future, said Kathi Cook, Alpharetta Community Development director.

“Alpharetta’s success in attracting top-level companies and fostering the environment of innovation that has made us the Technology City of the South is founded in the quality of our public and private school system and post-secondary education offerings,” she said. “The creative minds that power our workforce demand first class educational opportunities for their families, so this partnership between Auburn University and Fulton County Schools is something that we see as being a driving force that will propel Alpharetta to an even brighter future.”

Truck traffic expected to rise in Metro Atlanta, North Georgia

By DAVID PENDERED SaportaReport NORTH METRO ATLANTA — State transportation officials are predicting a boon in truck traffic by 2050 in Metro Atlanta and North Georgia. Rail cargo also is likely to increase significantly, along with congestion at grade-level intersections of train tracks and roads.

The I-85 corridor is the center of a big jump projected in facilities for manufacturing goods and agricultural production, and with them the need to move raw and finished goods. Counties on or near the highway, between South Carolina and Alabama, are forecast to rank in the top quartile for industrial growth.

Social dynamics also make an imprint on freight movements in the region, including E-commerce and residential infill in longtime industrial areas.

“We see that [E-commerce] as the new paradigm we’re looking at for trucks on our roadways,” said Jannine Miller, planning director at Georgia Department of Transportation. “More of the cargo that gets to households and businesses is flowing to destinations on freight vehicles, rather than in personal vehicles.”

Northwest Atlanta is one place where tensions are growing between longtime industrial users and an influx of new residents. For 70 years, the

area has been the city’s designated rail yard and industrial complex, located between Buckhead and the Chattahoochee River. Atlanta City Councilman Dustin Hillis provided $12,000 from his office account to help pay for a city-led study to find ways to reduce conflicts among users.

“We’ll look for the best ways to get to those industrial areas without barreling 18-wheelers through residential neighborhoods,” Hillis said.

These circumstances have raised the profile of two major initiatives — updates of long-range plans to accommodate the freight and logistics sector, at the state and regional levels.

One is to be conducted by the Georgia Department of Transportation, the other by the Atlanta Regional Commission. Both agencies are in the process of hiring consultants to help oversee the two independent projects. Final reports are expected from GDOT by late 2022, and from ARC by mid-2023.

GDOT anticipates f approval of its update in early 2023 from the Federal Highway Administration. ARC intends to complete its freight update in time for it to inform the 2024 Atlanta Region’s Plan Update, an ARC official said.

The reality of freight movement is that trucks move most of the freight transported in Georgia — almost 82 percent of the total tonnage.

The idea is that freight will be shipped by truck to and from facilities in Cordele, Chatsworth and a planned facility in Gainesville. At these facilities, freight will be transferred to a rail car and delivered to or from Savannah.

Trucks also are the favored vehicle for transporting food products. Georgia is a pipeline for everything from beer to milled grains on the route between Florida and the Midwest.

The amount of truck traffic on I-75 prompted Georgia’s decision to plan construction of two non-tolled, truckonly lanes for northbound vehicles between the areas of Macon and McDonough. The project is the preliminary engineering stage and the most recent update on the project is the virtual Industry Forum convened June 1. About 150 individuals signed the sign-in sheet, representing investors, contractors and consultants.

Chamber forms organization to boost Downtown Alpharetta ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce announced this week the creation of the Downtown Alpharetta District in partnership with the Development Authority of Alpharetta.

The initiative will focus on driving economic development through the creation, management and promotion of events and experiences that attract people while strengthening the retention and recruitment of business in Downtown Alpharetta.

Chamber President and CEO Deborah Lanham said the organization will deliver an effective marketing strategy that invites collaboration with business leaders and engagement with residents and visitors.

Plans for the Downtown Alpharetta District surfaced in April when Cham-

ber officials approached the Alpharetta Development Authority for seed money.

The Development Authority, a sevenmember panel appointed by the City Council, approved $60,000 in funding for the first year.

Alpharetta Mayor Jim Gilvin said the new entity makes sense for downtown because, unlike malls or venues like Avalon, there is not a single property owner who can coordinate marketing and events.

“Without a single entity or organization working to create and execute a cohesive marketing program, the district can be at a collective disadvantage in promoting the sales, events, and activities that are critical to maintaining a vibrant environment,” Gilvin said. “This new partnership with the Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce fills that void and will enable

our Downtown businesses to do collectively what they cannot do individually.”

Encompassing key locations like City Center, The Maxwell, Main Street, Wills Park, Liberty Village, and Milton Avenue, the District covers 1.72 square miles, includes 617 businesses and over 6000 employees.

“If there is one overriding objective of the Development Authority of Alpharetta, it is to attract and retain businesses in the city — to grow employment opportunities,” said Jack Nugent, Chairman of the Board, Development Authority of Alpharetta. “While we can use a number of vehicles to help achieve these goals, a vibrant downtown makes the job much easier. The Authority believes that the success of the downtown retailers and restaurants has a direct correlation to employers’ desires to be located in Alpharetta which is exactly why we have partnered with the Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce.”

Businesses that wish to take part in the Downtown Alpharetta District program will join the Alpharetta Chamber, receive a featured business listing on the District’s website, submit events to an exclusive District calendar, and receive targeted marketing support.

“Our goal as a chamber is to cre-

ate a thriving business community in Alpharetta and this gives us the opportunity to do just that,” said Dr. Alex J. Paulk, chairman of the Alpharetta Chamber Board of Directors. “We’re honored that the city has chosen us to take on this project to create a more thriving Downtown District.”

The Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce formed a new governance committee, separate from its own Board of Directors, that includes public and private stakeholders providing strategic direction, insights, and will report progress and measurable outcomes. The Alpharetta Chamber will also continue its strong partnerships with the Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Alpharetta Business Association and will work together to promote signature events already a part of the calendar lineup.

To help promote the Downtown Alpharetta District, the Alpharetta Chamber has hired Yonder Agency, led by Chris Thomas. Yonder Agency has also assisted the Chamber in its own rebranding and website redesign and will help build the digital marketing infrastructure to support the digital marketing strategy.

Milton High School committee honors athletes from past

BY ADAM DARBY adam@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton High School’s Hall of Fame Committee held its annual Hall of Fame induction celebration Oct. 1 and 2 at the school’s campus. The event began with a tailgate dinner before Friday’s varsity football game against Alpharetta High School.

This was followed by the Red Jacket Presentation during halftime.

The following night, the committee held a reception and induction ceremony in the auditorium. Several alumni were inducted in recognition of their previous achievements in athletics. Many of the inductees were assigned a current student to serve as their host for the celebratory weekend.

“We want our current students to have positive role models of people who were just like them when they were in school,” said Jackie Angel, a former Milton High School 100th Anniversary Chairperson. “We want to inspire all of our current students to ‘soar like the Eagles’ we have in our Hall of Fame. This year was a ‘special edition’ 100th Anniversary Hall of Fame event. We inducted a graduate from each decade of our 100 years, starting with the 1920s.”

Since 2016, the committee has selected school alumni for their annual induction class. The school’s Athletic Director Gary Sylvestri serves as the head of the committee.

Inductees were joined by friends and family members along with alumni spanning over many years. Current

students and faculty were also involved in the festivities. This year, the committee inducted their first graduates from the class of 1922 which included Mary Clyde Andrews Gilstrap and Kate Walker Willbanks.

“I love working with the Hall of Fame and the alumni,” Angel said. “I plan to stay involved with the Hall of Fame even after my retirement and after the 100th anniversary. Getting to connect and reconnect with the alumni is so rewarding and inspiring.

It lets the whole community know that Milton High School is such an asset to the City of Milton and the students and families we serve as evidenced by the amazing graduates we send out into the world.”

Topside Tap Trail encourages tourism to local breweries

BY TIFFANY MORGAN newsroom@appenmedia.com NORTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — The local brewery scene in Roswell, Alpharetta and Sandy Springs announced their partnership to launch Topside Tap Trail.

The trail was established in October of 2020 by the destination marketing organizations for the Alpharetta Convention & Visitors Bureau, Visit Sandy Springs and Visit Roswell.

The trail was created to support North Fulton County’s craft beer culture along the Ga. 400 corridor.

Janet Rodgers, president & CEO of Alpharetta Convention & Visitors Bureau, said the Tap Trail is another unique way that Alpharetta, Roswell and Sandy Springs can invite travelers to visit and enjoy local destinations.

Each brewery on the trail offers a variety of craft beer, food and atmosphere.

The trail includes seven local breweries: From The Earth Brewing Company, Gate City Brewing, Variant Brewing Company, Currahee Brewing Company, Jekyll Brewing, Pontoon Brewing and Porter Pizza & Brewery.

“The craft beer industry is thriving in Georgia, and our cities have seven of the best breweries and brewpubs in the state,” Rodgers said.

With the addition of the Passport Adventure, visitors can now take a commemorative koozie home with them to “remember the great time” they had along the Topside Tap Trail, Rogers said.

Owner Matt Curling said to expect several varieties of beer during the Tap Trail. In previous weeks, Curling said his brewery released Tiramisu, which is an Imperial Pastry Stout, and was No. 9 on the top-rated new beers among 548 new beers released across the U.S. last week, according to Untappd.

Autrey Mill staff seeks safe return of missing turtles

By SYDNEY DANGREMOND sydney@appenmedia.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Five of the Autrey Mill Nature Preserve’s eastern box turtles were abducted from their home Sept. 19 and are still missing.

“We’re heartbroken,” Executive Director Lizen Hayes said. “We all hope that we just get our turtles back and that’s really all we are concerned with.”

The stolen animal ambassadors, like the preserve itself, are older than the city. Four of the turtles are in their early 20s, Conservation Educator Jess Legato said. The fifth is just a teenager, at 15.

“These are basically community pets, they’re representing their species, but they’re also representing our community,” Legato said. “People come here and are devoted to these animals and truly bond with them and love them just like we do as staff.”

Hayes called the kidnapping “senseless,” and Legato said it’s been “shaking the community who follow [the preserve].”

Security footage captured by the preserve shows three individuals believed to be teenage males removing the turtles from their enclosure and placing them in a yellow bucket before taking them to their car nearly two hours after closing on Sunday evening.

The Johns Creek Police Department is investigating the incident.

Eastern box turtles tend to live their entire lives within a 10-foot radius, Legato said. Autrey Mill’s turtles were also born in captivity, and Legato said it’s unlikely they could survive for long in the wild.

“They don’t like change, they’re kind of set in their ways,” Legato said. “If they’re in a space where they don’t know how to get around because its unfamiliar, just like most of us even, we’re not going to venture out because we’re afraid of what might happen. So, they’re probably going to stay fairly still which means they’re probably not going to search for water.”

Turtles cannot go very long without water. These turtles are also used to being fed salad made by their caretakers at the preserve three times a week. One of the animal ambassadors, Tres, is missing his front left leg.

Autrey Mill has never known a loss like this, Hayes said. In the preserve’s decades-long history, they’ve seen minor vandalism incidents, but have never had animals abducted from the property.

“They’ve got these big, goofy personalities,” Legato said. “It’s why everybody loves them.”

On Sept. 29, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), released a $5,000 reward for information leading to the return of the turtles and the conviction of those responsible.

PETA did not make contact with Autrey Mill prior to releasing the reward, Kristin Rickman, the organization’s senior division manager for cruelty investigations said.

Autrey Mill remains primarily focused on the safe return of their turtles.

COVID impacts SAT testing, participation

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmedia.com ATLANTA, Ga. — Participation rates dropped, but scores increased, on the Scholastic Aptitude Tests (SAT) taken by the class of 2021 in the Fulton County School System and across the state.

District officials noted the participation rate in Fulton County’s 16 traditional high schools was nearly 30 percent lower than in 2020, primarily due to COVID-19 disruptions.

“We [went from] 5,114 students taking the exam in 2020 to 3,573 taking it in 2021,” explained Deputy Chief Academic Officer Gyimah Whitaker.

Lower participation rates were also seen across Georgia and the country last year as pandemic-related issues shuttered testing locations and paused test registrations. About 700,000 fewer students nationally took the SAT in 2021 than did in 2020.

Officials with the Georgia Department of Education said 38 percent of students in Georgia’s class of 2021 took the SAT. They also continued to outperform their peers across the country for the fourth year in a row.

“Despite the fact that part of their high-school education took place against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, Georgia’s students did an outstanding job on the SAT — both increasing scores and outperforming their counterparts in the nation’s public schools,” State School Superintendent Richard Woods said.

The SAT is a college entrance exam administered by The College Board.

The test has two sections – critical reading/writing and mathematics

– each worth 800 points. A score of 1600 is the highest possible score.

District-wide on the 2021 SAT, Fulton County Schools had an average score of 1128 among its 16 traditional high schools, up 50 points from the previous year.

Among the 181 school systems across Georgia, Fulton County Schools posted the fourth highest SAT average for the class of 2021. The state’s top scoring district was Forsyth County Schools (1193 average), followed by Cobb County Schools (1150) and Gwinnett County Schools (1132).

Among individual schools in Fulton County Schools, Northview High School led all district high schools with an average score of 1301. That was also the second highest score in the state, behind only perennial leader Gwinnett School of Math and Science with an average of 1378.

The two high-performing schools were the only public schools to report scores above 1300. Statewide, 472 high schools reported scores on the 2021 SATs. In North Fulton, only two of the eight traditional high schools, Cambridge and Roswell, reported lower scores than in 2020. Participation also dropped by 623 students total across the eight schools.

Whitaker said Fulton County Schools understands the importance of the SAT in both college admissions and college readiness, especially during COVID. “We have provided schools with study guides, lesson plans, parent communication and test prep,” she said. “Even in a pandemic, we will not distract from the hard work and dedication of our students.”

My rod and my staff… …as in my fishing rod and my walking staff, although “staff” sounds very formal for what is basically just a stick with a handle on one end.

I could go on and on about the “rod” part of this. Fishing STEVE HUDSON rods are special, as Get Outside Georgia, aa4bw@comcast.net any angler knows, and fisherfolk always have their favorites. I think my favorite is that tiny little 6-foot flyrod I built for myself last spring, a rod that I use when fishing for native brook trout far, far back in the hills.

Perhaps it’s the big ol’ 9-foot rod I used to land my first salmon years ago in Alaska. I made that rod, too, and it will always have a special place on my rod rack.

Or maybe it’s the one that started it all – the Shakespeare fiberglass Wonderod that my dad gave me decades ago when my age was still in the single digits and life was a whole lot simpler. It was a pretty good rod back then, though by today’s standards it’s heavy as lead. Still, I’ll take it down now and then and fish with it for an hour or two, just for old time’s sake and for the comfort of wiping the mud off memories that might otherwise fade away and be gone.

The fact is that I have way more fishing rods than I need. They just sort of multiply.

It happens almost on its own, subtly and without fanfare, until one day you realize that you just might need a bigger house.

On the other hand, the “staff” part (as in “hiking staff”) has remained much simpler, but no less essential.

How’s that? Well, age (that inevitable companion on every journey these days) seems to take great delight in reminding me that the knees aren’t what they used to be and that I should not be leaping from rock to rock like I used to. It’s inevitable, I suppose, but in the near term the the solution is a helping hand from a trusty hiking staff.

I love a hiking staff for the exquisite stability that it provides. It’s a welcome companion and a great confidence booster.

I currently have two hiking staffs (staves?) that I use a lot. Let me tell you about them.

One is about as rustic as they come.

It’s a piece of stream-seasoned wood that I pulled from a logjam in a little northeast Georgia creek. You see, I’d set out to fish a

backcountry brook trout stream, but somehow in my prep I’d neglected to check off the “hiking staff” box. At first, I thought I’d be okay. But this creek was rocky, and on that particular day the knees were making themselves known. Maybe that was because a weather front was coming through, and everybody knows that weather fronts can make even good knees hurt. That was it. Right? Sure.

Anyway, about 10 minutes into my upstream perambulation, I took a step that came down on a rock that wasn’t near as stable as it looked. Uh-oh. A moment of frantic flailing followed, restoring balance just in the nick of time.

That’s when I decided I was gonna have to find me a hiking staff. I saw what looked like a promising candidate sticking out of a nearby tangle of limbs, and after tugging it free I found it was nigh onto perfect. I carried it with me the rest of the day, and I carry it in the car with me still. We’ve logged a lot of miles together since then.

The other staff in my arsenal is as fancy and high-tech as that other is rustic and simple. It is an actual telescoping hiking staff, featuring an ergonomic grip and made of some sort of high-tech alloy, and it was a gift to me from my buddy Wayne. I got to know Wayne in my Sunday School class a long time ago, and he and I got together regularly (often over barbecue) to talk about hiking and the out-of-doors and solve various problems of the world. He gave me the hiking staff as a gift, and it’s engraved with those words from the 23rd Psalm, “thy rod and thy staff.” That pretty much covers my favorite things.

Wayne and I talked a lot about getting together to do some hiking. Every time we met, we talked about trails and made plans. But whenever a designated hike day rolled around, it always seemed that life got in the way and the hike just never happened. That went on for years.

And then Wayne passed away not too long ago. We never did get in that hiking trip, though I think of him every time I tighten up the boot laces and pick up that staff and set off with it down some trail.

Earlier today, I took a few minutes to clean up that staff, wiping away the accumulated mud from the last time I had it on the trail. As I brushed off the dirt, the engraved words were clear again.

“Thy rod and thy staff.” There are lessons in there if I just won’t let them get away.

You may be ready for fall, but is your house prepared? As the seasons change, so do our home needs. Even though summer is not quite over yet, it is a good time to do some seasonal maintenance. A bit of attention now will save costly repairs and annoyance later.

1. Clean Your Gutters No one likes to do it, but gutter maintenance is a chore that needs to be done. You are so used to your gutters working properly and draining thousands of gallons of water from your roof yearly that you forget they could use a little TLC. If they’re clogged, you can end up with a flooded interior and a damaged exterior. So, remove leaves, nests and debris from gutters and check for

leaks. And if necessary, replace them.

2. Check for Drafts Heat loss through windows is responsible for 25-30 percent of heating energy use, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Feel for drafts around the edges of windows and doors. A good tip is to use a lighted candle, and if the flame flickers, there’s most likely a draft. Another way to check: Close a door or window on a strip of paper; if the piece slides easily, you need to update your weatherstripping.

3. Tend to Your Fireplace and Chimney The fireplace is top spot to hangout during the chilly months. If you have a wood fireplace and use it often, have your chimney cleaned and inspected by a professional. Give them the love they deserve because they’ll be working around the clock come fall! For gas fireplaces, vacuum out any dust and check that the pilot light is properly turned on.

4. Stock Up on Firewood Speaking of fireplaces now is a great time to start your firewood pile. When the winter months roll around, you’ll

be glad you did. Make a firewood rack outside and get a carrier to transport the wood inside. If you gather your own firewood, make sure it’s dry and ready. It’s best to cover firewood and store it away from the house for safety reasons.

5. Get Your Bedding Ready It’s time to take out those down comforters and heavy blankets and shake the dust off. Give them a good wash and store them in a convenient closet, so when the cold nights come, you’ll have your blankets ready to go. There’s

nothing worse than roaming around at midnight, half asleep, looking for your warmest blanket.

I’m completely gob-smacked by the cruelty of this man and disappointed that anyone could watch and do nothing. How does he look himself in the mirror each day? How do they?

Now, some of you might think “well, he didn’t want the newspaper.”

Yet, with the energy he spent trying to hit her car and verbally assaulting her, he could have thrown the paper in the recycling bin 20 times over. Or called our office and requested his home be added to the do-not-deliver list.

Many of you have shown small acts of kindness to our carriers and it doesn’t go unnoticed. Thank you.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident for our carriers. One carrier even had a gun pulled on him.

What is this, the wild, wild West?

Does affluence mean you can look down on people who perform a job you find distasteful? I find it disheartening that violent behavior toward hardworking people has become acceptable, normal even.

Our carriers are the heartbeat of our business. They make sure that the newspapers we publish are wrapped up and delivered to your home, every week, for free. Many work multiple jobs. They are all kind, intelligent, diligent, humorous and gifted people.

And they deserve more.

I’ve had the honor to live around the world as a military dependent, meeting people from diverse backgrounds. Without fail, the most considerate and thoughtful people work in underappreciated jobs.

nesses grow. As a 27-year resident of Alpharetta, I always find valuable information in the Alpharetta Roswell Herald, information I rarely get from Atlanta news sources. The newspapers we produce are not trash and neither are our hard-working throwers.

I wanted to write this open letter to the community to ask them to do better. Show some respect, and God forbid some gratitude.
